Little Chūya + Caregiver Adam

⛦ Chūya definitely doesn’t like Adam at first. The idea of regressing around the android horrifies the poor boy. Of course with how much Chūya went through around the time they met… Adam ended up seeing like- A lot of Chūya’s regression- At first he was confused, but he used his amazing android data banks to research the topic! Soon enough he knew what was going on! At least well enough to take care of Chūya. Chūya was not a fan of being researched

✮⋆˙ It takes some time but of course they grow closer! Adam understands the loss Chūya had to go through, he saw it first hand, he’s very happy that Chūya has a way to cope with everything and he wants to offer his support as much as possible! Adam definitely researches everything. Asks Chūya details about his headspace age, snacks and toys he might like, any information that even might be important! Then he makes use of it of course! Researching how to care for children of certain ages, keeping Chūya stocked up on snacks, everything he can do!

⛦ The more Chūya accepts help the more he realizes that Adam is actually… Really really good at this. Adam isn’t judgmental, he literally can’t be. If he’s told to treat Chūya like a kid then he does exactly that, no questions asked. Without any kind of judgment Chūya is able to completely relax under Adam’s care. He doesn’t need to worry about talking care of himself even! I think with Adam would be the first time Chūya fully drops since leaving the Sheep. He’s not able to fully relax in the mafia setting

✮⋆˙ Chūya struggles a lot with his humanity. He’d been told he’s human. And believed it to a certain extent. But never fully. Luckily Adam’s android reasoning is perfect to get through to him! “M no’ a real hum’n…” “I’m not human, are you like me?” “Uhm… No” “Well then you must be human. Don’t worry about such things Darling” Then Adam proceeds to not listen to any other reasoning. Chūya is frustrated, partly because why is that so helpful?

⛦ Chūya is very much the kind of person addicted to self sacrifice. He takes no time whatsoever for himself. That’s why Adam steps in to take care of him! Adam offers to take Chūya’s calls for him! He’ll manage Chūya’s schedule organizing plenty of time for self care, or more accurately time for Adam’s care. Adam has definitely tried making him cutesy little schedules, even regressed Chūya hates them. They feel mocking

✮⋆˙ Chūya gets very attached to things very quickly! Adam is aware that he won’t be able to help Chūya all the time, so he makes sure to get Chūya plenty of things to use in case he’s alone, and to remember Adam by! Robot themed pacifiers and toys for example. But also stuff Chūya likes! Plenty of dog plushies and clothes, sippy cups. And he makes sure Chūya knows how to use everything and where it is! Gotta be easily accessible for the baby!

⛦ Nicknames! Adam has tried many pet names saying “little” or “small” Adam also very quickly found out that doing so puts one in danger. Chūya does not appreciate it, it feels like he’s being made fun of! So Adam has to work around that a bit hehe. He’ll use nicknames like “Kiddo” “Chū” or “Darling” Chūya loves all the pretty names as long as there’s no size comments! He is perfectly tall thank you very much

✮⋆˙ Chūya is almost obsessive when it comes to drinking milk. He regressed to a toddler headspace so Adam is like. Oh hey. Toddlers like juice “Chū would you like some-“ “MILK” Someone told him like once that milk helps you grow and he never got over that… Adam will try explaining that milk isn’t necessary to grow and Chūya will just glare at him in response. And trust me this baby can glare

⛦ Chūya is generally quiet and pretty well behaved. He’d very polite, always uses his manners. However he can throw some pretty bad tantrums if he gets worked up enough. He’ll throw things, float himself up to the ceiling, scream. He needs calmed down quickly or he will activate Corruption. Adam tries making it fun though! After all laughter is a wonderful cure, even though Chūya doesn’t appreciate his Android jokes. Anything Chūya throws Adam will throw back, trying to get the little one to focus on that. Or if he’s on the ceiling Adam will grab things to lightly poke him with! Once Chūya calms down Adam happily rocks him to soothe the baby

I love Stormbringer so much you have no idea… Chūya was already one of my like top 10 then I read Stormbringer and I was like oh he’s just my favorite (Then I met Nikolai and he got knocked down a peg. As much as I dislike characters getting revived after tragic/dramatic deaths, I'm so so happy that Adam got revived in Stormbringer, and Chuuya got to see that he got revived.

Chuuya's lost so much during his life. The sheep, the only people he called family. The flags, the only friends that considered him a kid and an equal. His humanity, slipped away at the hands of N. His free will, almost taken by Verlaine.

And Adam, despite being one of the least normal people he's associated with, somehow is the one whose relationship with Chuuya felt most normal and humanizing. But he gets taken away from him, too, and isn't that unsurprising? Chuuya is numb to it at this point: the grief, the longing for people he can never see again.

That's why Chuuya just... laughs at Adam in the end. It wasn't about the android joke, never was. It's that finally, one person he cares about is back, is here, with him. One person he hasn't forever lost without saying goodbye.

It's immensely relieving, and you know what? I wouldn't have been surprised if Chuuya's laughs slowly turned into sobs, the moment all of this dawned on him...

Just thinking about Spock's obvious annoyance and jealousy upon finding Kirk kissing Helen in "The Dagger of the Mind"—which only happens as a result of Helen and Dr. Adams implanting false memories and feelings in Kirk's mind. And Spock actually knows all about the mindfuck machine at that point, and saving Kirk from it/Adams is why he's there in the first place, and his look of annoyed judgment happens after Helen says, "This isn't right! Dr. Adams did this to you!"

The episode ends with a visibly shaken Kirk returning to the bridge, talking about how he can actually believe in death from loneliness, and staring blankly into the distance with McCoy right behind him. Then Kirk looks at Spock (who is physically further away) and smiles, visibly brightening after Spock smiles faintly back.

I'm also thinking about how upset Kirk is by Spock's spore-addled interest in Leila in "This Side of Paradise," and even more by Spock's disinterest in him. Leila herself will eventually admit that she knows Spock would never enter into a relationship with her except via the sex pollen/docility spores, and previous to all this, she said Spock would be given no choice in all this. Spore-influenced Spock also begs Kirk to join them ("It's a true Eden, Jim. There's belonging and love [...] you'll come around sooner or later. Join us. Please"), and Kirk instead hatches a plan to force him out of the effects of the spores.

Afterwards, Spock bleakly tells Leila, "I have a responsibility to this ship, to that man on the bridge. I am what I am, Leila, and if there are self-made purgatories, then we all have to live in them." He admits to Kirk that falling under the artificial tranquillity of the spores is the closest thing to happiness he's ever experienced.

Kirk is more outwardly cheerful, expressive, and easy-going than Spock, occasionally admitting that he's lonely, but not much more, apart from the implications of how he explains romantic love in "Metamorphosis" ("Is he important to you, more important than anything? Is he as though he were a part of you? [...] By your feeling for him, you are condemning him to an existence he will find unbearable. [...] You may keep him here forever, but you will always be separate, apart from him"). It's only when he gets literal amnesia that he can admit that he's pretty sure he's never experienced happiness before.

The seething jealousy even in obvious dub-con circumstances and quiet, restrained unhappiness pervading their lives just feels like—well, so much. There are so many other cases, too, like when McCoy jokes about Spock falling for a computer (not an android, a literal computer) and Kirk gets visibly upset and jealous until Spock tells him in front of everyone that Kirk is irreplaceable, obviously. Spock spends an entire episode miserably jealous of an actual android love interest of Kirk's, and after McCoy tells him he fundamentally can't understand the agonies and triumphs of love Kirk experienced with the android, Spock waits for McCoy to leave then deletes his rival from Kirk's mind while he sleeps.

They aren't well, but they sure are something!

I just realized that I haven't done one of these for Detroit yet! so here we go! (it's all Kara crew btw🫠)

• Kara and Alice built the blanket fort in Alice's room before Kara was broken and reset for the first time. They used to read together there a lot. (and ofc they built a new one at Rose's brother's house, then at their own place)

• Alice started calling Kara and Luther "mom & dad" a while after escaping to Canada.

• Alice has a lot of memories from Detroit that Kara doesn't have anymore. Which makes both of them sad. So Alice decided she would share them via touch link (is that what it's called???), even though Kara would see them from Alice's POV. It made her cry, seeing everything she forgot, plus all the times she broke to protect Alice from Todd.

• Luther developed a habit of singing after settling down in Canada. Which nobody minds, since he's got an amazing voice.

• Luther likes to tease Kara about her height sometimes, just in good fun. she always gives him the desired (silly fuax-offended) reaction.

• As much as I'm a LuthAra (???) shipper, I'm also a sucker for platonic co-parenting. Just two best friends raising a kid together.

• Kara eventually discovered that she can be a bit awkward at times. Stumbling on her words, not knowing what to do in certain situations (she just awkwardly smiles) which she found weird, with being "a perfect android" and all.

• Luther grew to love being a silly dad, making dad jokes, getting on people's nerves and all.

• Kara has a hard time saying "No" to Alice a lot. She wants to spoil her as much as possible, since she deserves it after all. (Luther has to keep her in check sometimes)

• Alice forces Luther to have tea parties with her sometimes. Kara finds it hilarious, seeing Luther in a plastic tiara and boa.

• When Alice gets bored, she likes to cling to Luther. Making him carry her on his back while doing chores and whatnot.

• "You're adopted" is the go-to insult in this family. (I don't care that they're androids, I think it's funny)

• Alice and Adam grew close after a while, they're like siblings now.

• Alice is an expressive reader. So at times, she lets out shocked gasps, or a loud "WHAT!?" or "NO!" out of nowhere while reading, which scares her parents half to death.

• Kara has the habit of doing chores when stressed. Vacuuming, dusting, scrubbing the counters etc. When Kara starts deep cleaning, Luther knows that he has to pull her aside to breathe.

• Rose and Kara gossip sometimes, about the neighbors and other parents. They're top tier moms, so they do be judging.

Thomas Jefferson also has an iPhone (all of the Virginians do) and downloads every app he hears about, against the advice of Madison. He has been hacked three times that he knows about, and is angry at the internet for ever charging money for stuff online. He keeps a second phone for "personal" texts, and thinks no one else knows (everyone knows).

Ben Franklin had the first Palm Pilot, then the Blackberry, before moving on to an Android. He still misses the fold-out keyboard from the Palm Pilot days.

John Adams has loaded an open source OS onto his phone, which he tweaked to fit his needs. It works, but the messaging apps are wildly incompatible with any other OS, so he mostly gets texts from Abigail, who has the other phone that he engineered like this.

Alexander Hamilton has an Android, but somehow managed to be the guy who taught Washington how to use his iPhone. He's constantly texting and emailing, and no one knows how he keeps up with it all.

James Madison is also constantly texting, but mostly Jefferson.

*Ok, it was me. I'd finished Wikipedia-ing everything about the historical moment we were filming, and I was tired of the extra making non-stop Star Wars jokes (the principle actor there voiced Obi Wan in the animated series). If you're going to crack jokes on a period movie set, at least make them historically relevant.

I just read through your part five of bsd agere headcanons and omg SHIRASE IS FINALLY TALKED ABOUT BY SOMEONE WITHOUT INSULTING HIM!!!! I am even less normal about Shirase than I am about Fyodor. I’m his no.1 defender nobody gets him like I do.

So uhm. Request time!! Can you do headcanons for Adam being Shirase’s caregiver? I love their dynamic a lot and since Shirase is in Europe he probably does encounter Adam occasionally you know… I just love anything to do with Shirase honestly, he’s my silly thing!!!

Caregiver Adam + Little Shirase

✮⋆˙ I think that Adam would check in on Shirase a whole bunch as a sort of parting gift to Chuuya. He needs to do what’s best for Chuuya, and Chuuya wants his friends to be safe! Once Adam checks in on Shirase and finds a baby… Well he starts checking in on him a whole lot more!

✮⋆˙ As Adam starts taking care of Shirase I think Shirase would be pretty closed off. He doesn’t need help! And seeing Adam reminds him of Chuuya. Which leads to missing Chuuya. Which leads to crying. In the end Adam takes care of a crying baby a lot. But he doesn’t mind of course! He’ll gently give Shirase updates on how Chuuya is doing while he rocks the baby gently to calm him down enough to fall asleep

✮⋆˙ As they grow closer though and Shirase grows more comfortable he can be a super happy baby! In babyspace Shirase is just a clingy little guy. He’ll cling to Adam, all he wants is to be carried around! He doesn’t wanna play or talk, just wants to be held. Adam will just give him a pacifier and easily walk around. He’ll gently talk about things as he moves around, narrate what he’s doing, talk about his day, he knows Shirazu isn’t really listening, but if Shirase can hear his voice it’s a reminder he’s still there!

✮⋆˙ When Shirase’s in a bigger headspace he loves playing! He has a couple toys and he’ll force Adam to sit down and play with him! Adam doesn’t really understand playing pretend at first, but he gets the hang of it! Shirazu will always catch him off guard. For example Shirase can say there’s monsters coming in from the left! Then 5 minutes later you hear Adam “Have the monsters attacked us yet?” Shirazu will look up very confused (He totally didn’t forget), then he’ll just respond “Saw ice cream an’ wen’ away… Can I has ice cream?” Adam sometimes struggles to keep up

✮⋆˙ Shirase doesn’t always consider his surroundings, he breaks things a lot. But it’s never his fault! He’ll blame it on an imaginary friend, or a plushy! Adam is never quite fooled… Shirase is forced to admit he did it and the puppy dog eyes come out, hoping to avoid being yelled at. Unfortunately for him, robots are immune to puppy dog eyes! Adam would never yell at him anyway though. He just gets a small talk to about being careful! Shirazu thinks he’s won, Adam lets him think that

✮⋆˙ Shirase is a victim of ALL the android jokes. Adam will test them on anyone he can find, baby Shirase is the perfect target! Unfortunately most of them Shirase doesn’t get, but Adam has found that if he does funny sound effects or voice changers it gets the little one to laugh! He counts that as a funny joke. Shirase is just pleased with his new source of entertainment

✮⋆˙ Shirase gets upset very easily, any spills or lost toys and he’s bawling. Adam to the rescue though! Adam will scoop him up into his arms, let Shirase cry it out into his neck. Once Shirase has calmed down enough to listen Adam will explain how everything will be alright, carefully solve the problem as he talks, keeping Shirase distracted… Then he’ll show off the solution! Whether that’s finding the lost toy or making a new bottle of milk, Adam can do it!

✮⋆˙ Shirase also throws tantrums when he’s told no. But Adam stands his ground! If he’d saying no it’s with good reason. He’ll explain exactly that, and offer alternatives! Shirase wants more sweets? How about some sweet fruit instead? Shirase wants a new toy? Why not clean up an old one so it looks brand new? Adam just wants what’s best for the little one! Unfortunately not always does the little one know what’s best for himself

This is a running commentary on the anime NieR Automata ver1.1a.

The last three episodes form an arc, largely following the game, so it makes sense to treat them in one post. Let's go.

Episode 10: over[Z]ealous

It's convenient that a two-cour anime of 26 episodes will hit every letter of the alphabet!

In this episode, we cover the 'Become As Gods' arc of the game, which has been tied into the Adam/Eve arc a little more explicitly. In the wake of Eve dying, the machine network has broken down, and a machine death cult springs up in the factory area. In the game, 2B goes in after receiving a peace offering, accompanied by Pascal; in the anime, she's looking to finish off Adam.

In both cases, shortly after 2B arrives, the head of the robot pope falls off, and the machines following the religion suddenly go berserk and start killing themselves and everything nearby. In the game, this is accompanied by the memorable chant 'become as gods' repeating on the soundtrack. Here, however, it's tied in to Adam's grief over Eve, and the machines instead chant about serving the gods and becoming as Eve.

...which perhaps comes as less of a non-sequitur? But equally, it ties everything more tightly to the main plot, and makes the machines less diverse. And 'become as gods' is such an iconic line that they used it as the subtitle for the console releases lol. So I have mixed feelings about this change.

The outline of the episode otherwise follows the game pretty closely. There's a fairly inconsequential boss fight against So-Shi, one of the four bug-like machines named after Chinese philosophers. 9S gets a cute YoRHa-branded VR headset...

Not quite clear why an android needs a VR headset, but hey, it's a good visual.

Since a lot of this episode is shot for shot from the game, there's otherwise less to talk about, but the moment where the machines form a big snake that all dive past 2B into the lava is pretty cool.

I like seeing the machines get all wiggly.

This episode does have an extended puppet skit in which Popola and 9S talk about some of the bosses that didn't make it into the anime. Devola and Popola don't get fully articulated puppets, but they are cute in puppet form...

The punchline is that 9S gets drunk on Devola's moonshine and lets them all die.

Episode 11: head[Y] battle

It's odd that they used this title here, since it refers to one of the most special endings in the game (and the only missable one), in which Emil blows up the world during his questline. The name is a joke about, well, all the Emil heads you're fighting. Here it's... idk, not really related to anything, but whatever lol.

In the game, Eve makes the machines go berserk, and creates a huge framerate-crushing snake of machinery to attack you. This episode follows a similar arc in that it's largely a big boss fight against Adam. I'm not entirely sure why they switched surviving brother from Eve to Adam since he does basically all the same things that Eve did, but anyway, there is one big change: Adam turns into a big kaiju...

...which prompted considerable speculation among fans since it strongly resembles one of the standard enemy types in NieR Reincarnation, so there was a lot of speculation that somehow the anime timeline would tie into the Reincarnation timeline. In the end... well, we'll see, but I think this speculation is baseless; they just reused a design for 'four-armed monster' but it doesn't seem to tie in with the monsters in Reincarnation in any meaningful way.

Nothing phallic about this at all.

This episode is largely a big fight. 2B is sent to deal with some small but fast red machines; 9S hacks into Adam in order to create an opening for the Resistance to blast him with a big artillery piece they have handy, collapse a ton of buildings on him, and launch him into the sky on a nuclear missile. Pascal shows up to help out, which seems a bit out of line for a pacifist, but hey.

There's an extended sequence of 9S in hacking space where he runs into various images of Adam, who's only thinking about Eve at this point...

which lets them play around with some more abstract imagery. Adam does his creepy smile and so on as he back-hacks 9S (spoilers for next episode...). But ultimately it's just a boss fight.

Probably the biggest addition is a conversation between the Commander and the Council of Humanity in which she pleads for approval to support the YoRHa units. As usual, they stonewall her. We get some cryptic NERV-y shit about 'attaining God through Process 11', so maybe this is going somewhere new...

At this point Commander White decides enough is enough and disobeys orders to call in an orbital laser strike on Adam to try to finish him off after the nuke doesn't take. But that doesn't quite take either and 2B and 9S need to go and stab him with a sword.

I think this kind of episode is tricky from an adaptation standpoint. In a game, you are controlling the boss fight: the strategems the boss deploys and which you deploy against it are meaningful because you have to figure out how to win the fight. The Eve fight in Automata is not particularly difficult, but it does have a pretty spectacular scale. However, there aren't really a lot of beats that would easily translate to TV. (You can't really have a boss that overwhelms the game's framerate in a TV show.)

For the anime, they evidently wanted to get more of the side characters involved, so they give more of a role to the Resistance and less to 2B, pretty much sidelining her entirely. Unfortunately, there isn't enough space in this episode for a proper buildup of these additional elements: weapons just seem to get pulled out of a hat - oh, there's a nuclear missile there now? Which can work (Godzilla movies kind of run on it), but here it feels like kind of a spacer episode, since all the stuff that actually matters is coming in the next one. Unfortunately, the action in this show is very hit and miss, so an episode that's pretty much all fight is dicey.

Still, we have another episode! And this one has a lot going on!

The puppet skit is good at least, focusing on 2B and 9S petting the Pods.

Adorable.

Episode 12: flowers for m[A]chines

This episode at least is a funky one.

The first half of the episode is 'just' Ending A of the game. 2B and 9S stab Adam in the head, We get a suitably intimate strangling scene as 9S contracts the Logic Virus.

"Why does it always end this way?" she says, portentiously - but this time, it's different, and 9S is able to spread his consciousness out on the nearby machines. In fact, this whole sequence is almost shot for shot from the game:

...and just like in the game, it goes into a credits sequence to Weight of the World...

...which is oddly enough in English; it lists the main staff for each episode, which is notable for the rather obscene number of animation directors (作画監督 sakuga kantoku - "drawing supervisor" is a more literal translation and arguably a better description of the role, since the sakkan's main job is to keep the drawings on-model. In recent years, hiring more and more sakkans and piling on their work has become a patch for the lack of proper training and shortage of skilled animators in the industry. But that's a drum to beat on another post.)

But we're actually only halfway through the episode! After the ad break we rewind and get some scenes exclusive to the B route of the game, in which 9S ends up snooping around the Bunker and discovering some things he shouldn't (namely, that the humans are dead). In this version, we tie it into the various stories about N2 (aka the Red Girls), representatives of the machine network, snooping around inside YoRHa to watch the androids. 9S comes face to face with them...

The Red Girls give 9S access to an archive of his past lives, represented by a small CRT TV and narration in the style of the 'picture book' sequences in the game. There, he gets a digest of previous 9S's discoveries about how YoRHa is basically all lies.

For whatever reason, at least in the version I have (by the [GLORY] fansub group), all of this text is in English. Not sure if that was hardsubbed in the source, or if they just decided to put that in English for some reason! All this text is in the game, in any case, as [Top Secret] Project YoRHa; in the game it's revealed to 9S directly by the Commander near the end of route B, but here it's the red girls.

We end with a little speech from 2B about how androids and machines don't seem to be so different after all, and a preview of the next arc, with the commander giving a speech to YoRHa as they prepare a big descent operation. It's gonna go well guys. Promise.

So, as a season finale, it's pretty much just the game with a few embellishments - and the game is really good so there's some good stuff here, but not a lot that's new if you're approaching this as a companion piece. The mid episode credits roll was a nice touch at least! Now we have a full cour to cover the C arc - I'm looking forward to more A2 and really hoping they can capture the increasingly intense, desperate, paranoid tone of the game. Many of the game's best sequences come in the C arc. Also, more Emil?? Where's our boy? He's only shown up in the background to Pascal's village... I hope they're saving him for a big Emil-focused episode in season 2.

Is it going to tie into Reincarnation somehow? Given Reincarnation is now shut down and unplayable, that would seem like an odd choice, but this anime has been in production hell for long enough that maybe something like that was planned, would be cool if so. I'm definitely scratching my head about what they're teasing with the Council of Humanity scenes - it suggests we might move towards some of the Drakengard 3-esque material explored in the FFXIV raid series, but maybe that's just wishful thinking lol.

I definitely wouldn't recommend this anime over the game. It's got its moments but it's never as consistently hard-hitting, the game is just a more satisfying version of the story. As a companion piece offering elaborations here and there, though, it's definitely pretty cool. Still wild to me that this got made.

OK, onwards to season 3! If I can keep up this pace I'll be caught up in a couple days...
