A conjoint analysis was used  to better understand consumers’ relative preferences for different delivery options, including their willingness to pay. It was discovered that nearly 25% of consumers are willing to pay premium prices for the privilege of same-day or instant delivery. This share is likely to increase, given that younger consumers are more inclined (about 30 %) to choose same-day and instant delivery over regular delivery.

However, despite the large number of consumers willing to pay extra for same-day delivery, only 2 %  would pay sufficiently more to make instant delivery viable (assuming the consumer bears  the additional cost of this extremely fast service). In any event, same-day and instant delivery will likely reach a combined share of 20 - 25 % of the market by 2025, and they are likely to grow significantly, especially if the service is extended to cover rural areas.

Three consumer delivery models (X2C) likely to dominate last-mile delivery in the future:

Autonomous ground vehicles with parcel lockers

 Drones

Bike couriers

Two of these will be characterized by a high degree of automation and asset intensity. Autonomous vehicles and drones, will deliver close to 100% of X2C items and 80 % of all items. Bike couriers will deliver only about 2% in the relatively small instant-delivery segment. Traditional delivery will account for the remaining items, approximately 20%. Big B2B customers with high drop factors(the number of parcels dropped per stop or recipient and special delivery requirements, such as hanging goods) will favor mostly human delivery as we know it today. The same is true for e-grocery delivery, as people will still want crates to be carried up to their apartments and returns to be handled directly.

Organizations that operate in  countries with high labor costs must start thinking about the future of the last mile now, as they need to lay foundations in HR, IT, and the investment strategy. Okay I gotta document this and explain to you guys what exactly happened here. Throwing this under a cut too, this got wordy.

When I have the weekend off of work like I did this past Saturday and Sunday, I typically don't charge my phone much. It rarely leaves my person but I don't worry about charging it for the most part. Keep this in mind.

I went to bed slightly later than normal last night and finally plugged the charger into my phone while I slept, knowing I'd get up at 6:25 A.M. as usual to head into work. I woke up this morning to the alarm set on my phone, go to turn it off and see that my phone battery is charged to 77%, not 100%.

Initially I'm puzzled. That shouldn't be the case. But I have an android phone, and it likes to prompt me every other week (maybe every 10 days or so,) to clear the cache for my apps + restart it in order to keep it healthy. When I forget to do either one of those things or both, it starts getting sluggish and fucky, often with the battery acting up and not holding a charge like normal. Lately my phone has delayed one of those prompts and I'm usually told to restart, then I get the message about cleaning the app cache like a day later. It's early in the morning, I'm still tired + not functioning on all cylinders, so I assume that's what's going on. I restart my phone and plug it back into the charger while rushing to get ready so I can head out the door and come to work.

I come back, pull it off the charger, it's still only at 77%. Annoying but I'm not worried yet. I need to rush out the door and get to work. I keep one of my spare chargers in my locker at work, I'll just charge the phone when I get there.

And I do, I put my phone in the break room on my spare charger as I get together everything I need for the day. Once that's done, it's been ~20 minutes, I go back to the break room and check the phone battery.

Still 77%. Genuinely annoyed now. Shouldn't be happening. I message a few Discord servers I'm in to let friends know I'm having battery issues and might be scarce today. Then I decide "it's probably being this way because I need to clear the cache. I'll do that, then on my 15-minute break I'll restart the phone again and plug it back in, and it should be fine."

So I work on clearing the cache, then stash my phone with my equipment, away from my body, just in case the battery is too warm. I get started on my tasks for the day, pretty sure I'll still have this in hand.

Around 8:15, an opportunity arises. I typically take my 15-min break at 9A.M. each day, but one of the areas I'm supposed to check on is still locked because someone overslept and nobody with the keys to that area will be there until 10:30. Suddenly a portion of my time is open.

Naturally, I go back to my department's hallway and put my phone on the charger. It has drained to 72% by now, so this should be the time of truth. I busy myself around the place doing unnecessary tasks, just in case I need to look productive should anyone unexpectedly show up.

But at 9A.M., my phone still hasn't charged past 77%.

Now I'm actually getting worried. What is going on? Desperate, I opened my phone's settings to check on the battery.

At this point, you see, I had recalled android phones have a charge cut-off. If the battery is overheating or in danger of doing so, the phone stops taking a charge to protect the battery. It's possible to turn this function off, but it isn't recommended. Me, I just want to know if that's what is happening.

What I learn is, if the battery protection feature were active, a shield symbol should have appeared over the battery icon, and it should have stopped charging at 80% (or 85%, depending on the model,) in response to having been left on a charger too long. But right there is already an issue. Recall what I said at the start? The phone wasn't left to charge for three days or more, there's no shield on the icon, and it hasn't charged past 77%. So that can't be what's going on either.

As I'm navigating, I see something interesting. The phone has registered that there's a cord connected but that it isn't taking a charge. Okay, weird. I unplug and look over the charge cord, just to be sure nothing's wrong with it and sure enough, it seems good.

I plug it back into the phone, keeping that battery status menu up. This time, it registers the cord connection and says it's rapidly charging. I turn the screen off, set the phone aside for a couple of minutes, then pick it back up to check the status.

Now it has charged to 78% finally, but again the status bar is giving the same error. ["Connected, not charging."] Okay, weirder. Unplug, plug back in, and this time I hold the cord in place. Takes a bit, but it finally creeps up to 79% briefly.

In the settings submenu for the battery, there is a HELP option that redirects to a specific site or preloaded information FAQ. I am now desperate enough to click on this, then click on the FAQ about Batteries>Charging Problems and I start scrolling. One of the early things it suggests is removing a phone case in the event the case itself has become damaged or warped in a way that interferes with the cord and charge port connection.

Okay, I can do that. This is a flimsy little phone and I'm a clumsy autistic who likes their device to have some solid heft to it, so it does have a big, weighted case protecting it. At a glance, the part of the case near the charge port doesn't look damaged but it can't hurt to give this a shot.

I unplug the phone. Remove the case. Gently plug the charger into the port and let go. The end of the charger slides slightly out on one side. Well, that kind of explains why it registered a connection but wasn't charging. I gently push the charger back to where it should be. It stays there for a second, then that tiny slide again. Okay...okay. Maybe something is really wrong with the charge port on my phone, and we're going to have to take it in to have it looked at or replaced. The thought makes me sick to my stomach but if that's what has to happen, it's what has to happen, right?

I sigh, set the phone back down. I'm halfway through my 15-minute break and barely nibbling my breakfast. I try to remedy that, and as I'm eating my food, I glance at my phone case. It's dusty, so I decide to take a clean paper towel and alcohol wipe and clean the inside of it for a change. Midway through, I stop.

There's the barest thought in my mind. Not even a thought per se, more a faded memory with an incredible familiar impulse attached. I look at my phone, still on the charger. It has dropped back down to 78% battery. That memory and impulse are still barely there but the root of them already has me moving.

I pull the phone off the charger.

In my mind, I'm already thinking "oh now you're just being ridiculous, this won't work," even as my mouth opens up and I utter "what the hell, can't hurt to try."

I turn the phone upside-down so I'm looking at the charge port.

Many many years have passed since I was a kid playing with my uncle's game systems, but I remember very well what I was told to do in the event dust had built up on the interior of a game cartridge and caused it to act irregularly or not slot properly into the game system.

So with a weird feeling of nostalgia and a sense of irony, I exhale and blow air into the charge port of my phone. About two or three times, for good measure.

I then plug it back in. I wait. The cord doesn't slip or slide. I wait out the short remainder of my break. Once it's over, I unplug the phone and see the battery is at 81%.

And I'm low-key about to fume. REALLY? THIS? THIS WAS WHAT WORKED?

But no, wait, it's too early. I'll wait, come back on my lunch break, plug it in for the duration of that, and see if it charges any better. If it does, and this silly throwback method has worked, I'm going to lose it. I'm going to actually squawk.

At 11:35 I settle down for my lunch break. I put my phone on the charger. And when my break is over and I unplug my phone?

98% charged.

Yes I did in fact, squawk and howl out loud. Startled some of the poor volunteers in the process.

The technology may be new, but the Ancient Ways remain as wise and powerful as ever. Hot damn.

My phone has been having battery issues since I woke up, and I think I did something that fixed it, but if it turns out that it actually worked, I am going to lose my mind.
