has anyone thought about the diegesis of music in bollywood/south asian masala movies? there's no doubt that it functions differently than in western musicals... but HOW exactly? in most western musical theatre the music seems to non-diegetic (as in, the characters and those around them are unaware that they are singing) unless it is a performance, then it is diegetic/source music (they are singing in the story- everyone knows they're singing).

perhaps the difference comes from the fact that masala movies are movies first and (to my knowledge) are often not adapted from musical stage productions (though the movies CAN be adapted into musicals in the case of mughal-e-azam, hum aapke hain koun, and dilwale dulhania le jayenge). but in masala movies the line between "this is a performance in the story" and "i am singing to express my feelings" seems somewhat blurred. Señorita from ZNMD is a performance, they are singing, everyone knows it. Bum Bum Bole from Taare Zameen Par, they're singing, Aamir Khan is a funny little dude singing a funky clown song. But then what about Kashmiri Main Tu Kanyakumari from Chennai Express? Singing in a car... okay, that's a performance! But the choreographed dance number? Is that happening or is it symbolizing their journey across India? Mere Khwabon Mein from DDLJ is definitely (probably?) Simran expressing her dreams and such, and she's not singing in universe. But then what about Mehndi Laga Ke Rakhna? Raj singing at Simran would make sense as a performance at a mehndi, but what about Simran singing back?

OH and since the popularity of film/musical songs works differently in South Asia than it does in the States... how does continuity work in that? Such as the medley from Mujhse Dosti Karoge, in which Hrithik's character sings Kuch Kuch Hota Hai to Rani's character... does this mean that KKHH exists in this universe?? Does Rani Mukherjee the actress then exist in this universe and her character in this movie have a doppleganger?? What about all of Shahrukh Khan's movies... especially with the antakshari scenes in Chennai Express? Does Om Shanti Om exist in that universe? Does SRK the actor exist? If not then how did these songs come about? Is it similar to the NSU (Nickelodeon Sitcom Universe) in which there are gray parts of one's mind when it comes to crossover events? This FASCINATES me to no end you don't understand.

side note. i want to see someone that has directed a masala movie tackle one of these american musical to movie adaptations. no more tom hooper. i want farah khan or karan johar or ss rajamouli to direct cats and see how THAT looks. if tom hooper had directed k3g it would not have been as fantastical (such as the "my son is here" super sense) as it was.

let american movie musicals have as much fun as south asian masala films do.

there seem to be some (paywalled) academic papers on the matter but it'd be interesting to hear anyone's thoughts on it!

• we were playing housey too and both of us were sitting together and he was like it's too hot so i told him to take off his sweater since he was wearing smth inside and he was like 'its sleeveless' i told him ok still if u feel hot take off rhe sweater i swear nobody gonna look at you and he was just sitting there, smirking.

• girl he almost choked a guy for accidentally throwing water on me uh yeah this one doesn't need an explanation

Well, I haven't been out of my state until my school decided to take us out on an excursion to Vizag, Andhra Pradesh. I was literally excited when it was announced for the first time.

I was in the ninth standard when I went out so far for the first time in my life. I wanted to pack a lot of things for the first time as I had no idea back then and still, I do the same sometimes. Well, luckily, my husband is more perfect at organizing luggage than me. Ooh! Lucky me. Anyway, my parents helped me in packing my stuff. I got a new pair of glasses as well as my old one was half-broken at that time.

Finally, the wait was over and I alongwith my friends, teachers, Sisters and the School Principal boarded the Express Train from our nearby railway station. It was also my longest train journey for the first time in my life.

I was super-excited. As I boarded the train, I was, as usual, teased by some 'friends' of mine. One among them in particular asked me if I bought the new pair of glasses with the silver medal which I won that year at my school for remarkable improvement from the first term exam into the second term exam. I was dumb struck at the moment as I was not outspoken at that time in comparison to now. Timidly, I just stared back at her blankly and took some moment to answer that it was bought by my father as the old one was not in a proper shape. Well, she barely pretended to hear my answer as before that only she started laughing and mocking at me along with the others. I felt very low at the moment. But then my usual habit of forgetting all the bad stuff came in to play and I started looking out of the window at the greenery passing by as the train moved on and on.

I gladly watched the green pastures on huge areas along with some people working by in the fields or some children playing around or the huge trees moving backwards as the train moved forward. I enjoyed the whole scene, ignoring some of the classmates who were busy playing a fool or playing antakshari (singing songs which start with some letter that the prior competitor's song ended in). Meanwhile, teachers and Sisters came over to check in on us and serve meals.

We reached Vizag the next morning and reached the hotel by afternoon. On the way to the hotel, I was amazed to find the streets all slanted and steep, surrounded by high mountains. I wondered back then that if I would walk on those streets, I may fall and roll over down into the endless street or pit. It was so weird because I kept thinking the same thing over and over as I passed the streets of Vizag.

After we reach the hotel the freshened up, had lunch and boarded the bus arranged by our school for a short trip to the Rishikonda Beach nearby. We clicked photos and roamed around for a while, guided by our teachers, who were telling us about the geographical importance of the area. Then we visited the Ramakrishna Beach. It was a great one indeed with its violent waves ushering upon the huge mossy rocks. A huge wall was there boundarying the Submarine Museum by the beach itself. We went inside the huge submarine and I literally felt congested in there with so many things around. It was quite a different experience all over. We came back to the hotel and relaxed. After dinner, we tried to sleep but as usual some of our friends decided to have fun by knocking at each other's doors and trying to haunt sometimes with the torches in the dark. But our teachers were strict. So, it couldn't continue any longer and all went back to sleep.

Next morning, many of us got late and had our breakfast in a rush. Then we went on our journey to the famous Borra Caves. It basically smelled like bat shit as bats dwelled there. It was all dark in there. We carried flashlights to find our way. The huge rocks caught our eyes the whole time. Then we went to Kailasagiri on the high mountains. We were in awe seeing the beautiful, magnificent sculptures of the Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvathi. It was really interesting a place over the mountains. A huge park is set up there to enjoy a great deal by all, especially the kids. In the evening, we were taken to the CMR Shopping Mall to buy any kind of souvenirs we desired. We were back to the hotel by late evening, had our dinner, said our prayers and went off to sleep. Next morning, we started for our home, boarded the train with heavy hearts and bid our goodbyes.

We enjoyed the short trip thoroughly and wished for more like this.

#txt #desi #im gonna go off in the tags so just bear with me #i think cousins work the hardest during weddings #on both sides hdjbgh #but the bride side compared to the groom's side is so different tho jfhdbghd #there is always a time set to meet at the parlour to get our hair and make-up done for each day #every cousin comes to the parlour in a different way #most share a two-wheeler #the more stable ones come in car #and both of them feel special in their own way #every car ride includes antakshari no matter how short the ride is #and every ride on a scooter or mototbike is screams as the wind messes up your hair #and the lady at the parlour will complain about it and tell you to drive the two-wheeler slowly when you return home #there will be music playing in the parlour some wedding tune that we listen to every wedding #one of the cousins will be asked to get some street food from the uncle selling it outisde #if he's selling roasted mumfali in a paper cone it's always a bonus #and we sing along with the songs #talk about the event happening that night or that afternoon #how excited we are to celebrate #maybe gossip about someone a little bit as a treat #about bhaiya's bhabhi who wore a hideous dress #or the aunty who doesn't stop pinching your cheerks #i think my favourite event is baraat #esp when you're on the girls side #the groom arrives at the venue on a horse and it's just so perfectly dramatic for a desi wedding #ok apparently in some places its a car #but listen where i come from #it's a horse ok it's a fucking horse because desis are dramatic like that

Antakshari is a parlor game played in India, where one player/team must come up with a song whose first verse begins with the last consonant of the previous song selected. Love at first sight (sound)

It was during a game of Antakshari(Google it, it's a fun music battle game that we play in India) with my fellow 7th graders that I first heard 'Love story'. I had no clue who TS was back then but that was a song that made my 12yr old self all mushy and princessey. I spared myself of the embarrassment of asking who the singer was, as obviously everyone around (except me) seemed to know n love her, I went home to Google n update myself. There's been no looking back ever since, 8 years now. From dreaming of sneaking out of home with an imaginary prince from 'our song', crying along with 'white Horse' Taylor, to singing 'fifteen' each time I changed a school until I graduated n got into college. Believe me Taylor has been there with me all along. I still sing 'mean' to myself each time someone tries to pull me down but I guess now I've got to teach myself to be the badass LWYMMD person.

Btw try singing 'fifteen' to yourself when your really nervous or about to do something new. It feels especially surreal when the setting of the song I.e the early morning breeze, new people and weird exciting yet nervous energy surrounds you.

You may have noticed I no longer do ask box things!

Or you mightn’t have, it’s cool :)

I love the idea of askbox things but recently I’ve noticed that people don’t do them in the spirit that I’d intended.

What I mean is, over the past few months, it’s felt like I’m always being tested.

I noted that when I asked people to send in playlists, for example, I didn’t get generic requests like Holi and Yellow. Instead I got convoluted and specific requests where a lot of people admitted (in private or in public) that they were trying to see if I picked a particular song. Which seems relatively harmless, I know, because it’s not like that person was going to get their underwear in a knot if I didn’t pick a certain song ... but it feels pretty crap to be on the receiving end of that.

It sucks the fun and joy out of doing those things if people always look at it from the lens of seeing if they can trip me up.

Another example would be the antakshari asks, where again, people deliberately sent in difficult ones and it got to the point where I stopped engaging with them because I could see what was happening and I didn’t want to ruin my weekend stressing about it.

And now you might wonder why the hell I open up my askbox if I’m so bloody sensitive to these things. That’s basically why I’ve stopped them. I don’t want to have to dread weekends because of it!

I’ve also noticed an uptick of people going around and correcting every little thing I do or post. These days it seems that I cannot make anything without someone wanting to prove their knowledge by replying or sending an ask. I stopped looking at the tags on reblogs earlier this year because of what people said or did in their tags -- but those are their own blogs and I’m not about to start policing what people do on their own platforms.

Undeniably, however, there is a group of people who seem to think it’s some kind of a victory if they can find some way to correct me, to show me up, to show how they’re better than me.

I get it. Some people build me up as an encyclopedia, as a God/Goddess, as whatever else I might have been jokingly called over the years. But here’s a secret: I’m a normal person just like everyone else, and it’s sometimes horrible to wake up and realise that people, instead of enjoying a post in the spirit in which it was intended to be enjoyed, have focussed on correcting me or showing me up.

It makes me feel like I cannot create original content (which I realise is totally the goal some of these people are going for). It makes me feel like I cannot post things unless they are complete, 100% correct, and have a dozen caveats on them about me knowing xyz and preferring to ignore it because the post is just funnier or more meaningful that way.

It means that my anxiety about posting becomes so horrible that I cannot post things without running them by six different people first.

So I wanna ask these people -- what on earth do you gain by doing this? Why can’t you just enjoy what’s being posted?

Or better yet, unfollow me if you hate me or this blog so much?

Gaana’s mantra for the future, says CEO Prashan Agarwal, is great content plus a seamless UI for the Indian user who doesn't want to put in too much effort to discover the songs, and a strong focus on regional content An IIT graduate and a Dean’s Merit lister from ISB Hyderabad, Prashan Agarwal, CEO – Gaana, brings enormous experience to his current role. From a Senior Associate Technology at Sapient to IM Leader at GE, from a VP at Naukri to Founding Director at AllCheckDeals.com, Co Founder at PropTiger and 19miles.com to his current role of CEO at Gaana, Prashan Agarwal has been leading Gaana with the acumen of an accomplished business leader, Entrepreneur and Angel Investor for more than three years now. Karthik P K caught up with Agarwal on the sidelines of the launch of VYRL Cover Star by VYRL Originals and Gaana.com in Mumbai, to speak about the opportunities and priorities of music streaming platforms and how they are moving ahead to widen the spread of their content genres. And of the phenomenal growth of Gaana over the past year from 60 million to 100 million users, plus its ongoing mission to create a platform which is personalized to the user and creates room for regional music to get its due. Read on Does Gaana have a library of content from private bands and performers? If so, what is that number? How do they help Gaana’s offerings? Well, We only work with labels, so we do have a lot of songs from private bands that come to us through a platform called ‘Okay Listen’ and other smaller platforms that are there in the country, and that is distributed through Orchard. These kinds of songs have a very niche audience they appeal to, and so we see a decent amount of traction on these songs. The usage is very high, but the number of customers who listen to these songs is limited as of today. How popular is this genre of music on Gaana? The popularity of private bands would be in low single-digit percent as of today. Because if you look at the country, there's a lot of evolution that has happened in regional music, English music. And then, of course, Bollywood music continues to grow. But what we've seen is the emergence of regional music and English music. Now, the band phenomenon continues to be a niche Indie music scene, if I may call it that. What is working out today, if you look at from a mainstream perspective, is hip hop to a certain extent. Gaana will help these promising private artistes by making their content available to its millions of users. Any other way you plan to help them? Will you actively promote this private content on the home page push notifications of Gaana on mobile and the web? When you talk about private bands, you talk about non-film music, which is pretty much the same genre. What is happening with non-film music is that with VYRL coming into play and us also doing bits and pieces in terms of promoting non-film music, we absolutely want to give the same kind of distribution to non-film music as a mainstream artist. So if you look at a band, the guys behind that band have now completely started showing up on the homepage as well. Secondly, we are also working on creating absolutely new offering for Indie music, which will focus on private offerings from smaller artists and bands and basically open up the entire funnel -- much like what SoundCloud has done in terms of creating a platform where people can come and through some basic curation can upload their songs; and if that song appeals to my customers, than definitely they'll make it to the showcase on the Indie music page. After the fan following grows to a certain threshold, we will be looking at the homepage offering for them. But essentially, if you are a local band and you are able to get a label to back you like VYRL, then definitely there are a lot more chances for you to make it to the homepage. We are the market leaders in the music streaming space, we have now 100 million monthly users. The entire country today has about 150 million customers who stream music online. Broadly, if I look at the market, the entire Indian population -- which is 1.4 billion customers -- listens to music. All of us love antakshari, all of us know about 200 songs each. So from that perspective, there is still a huge amount of potential in the market. Over the next few years the market will grow phenomenally from this 150 million; it will grow to about 400 million customers, and we will continue to be the market leaders given the kind of focus that we have on regional music, the kind of brand salience and brand recall that we have amongst the Indian customers. We are definitely the first port of call when it comes to music streaming for the Indian customer. FM Radio is trying to maximize its existing content by taking conversations online, as with Red FM Digital Radio, which has done this very smartly. And Saavn has been putting up interesting podcasts like Bhai Ke Raapchik Reviews by Kirthi Shetty, who is an exceptional talent – he was the voice and producer of Mawaali Bhai on RED FM -- for example. Both pipes of music delivery are expanding their content framework. Would you comment on this? What is Gaana doing in this space? Radio Mirchi is exclusive to Gaana, so we have all the Radio Mirchi stations and programs on Gaana for the last 5 years. We have been promoting radio content much like other platforms. Radio Mirchi continues to be a big draw for a lot of our customers, Meethi Mirchi is one of the strongest programs that we have on the platform today. I do not differentiate between radio programs and podcasts. When I look at the Indian customer, he doesn't even understand what a podcast is. So for me, radio is podcast and that is the basic premise on which we are building our entire radio offering on the app. So, the radio pages today don’t just have Radio Mirchi, now we have programs like Comedy Nights with Kapil. We have a lot of programs that we are doing in terms of storytelling, with Ashish Vidyarthi. Our focus has been to bring more and more Indian radio audio content on the radio tab of Gaana and we have seen a decent amount of success. We don't call it a podcast; that's the only difference. For me, radio is podcast and that is the basic premise on which we are building our entire radio offering on the app. So, the radio pages today don’t just have Radio Mirchi; now we have programs like Comedy Nights with Kapil. We have a lot of programs that we are doing in terms of storytelling, with Ashish Vidyarthi What would help music streaming platforms like Gaana and Saavn perform better? These have created the category for the Amazon Primes and the YouTube Musics to move in, and soon other streaming platforms too will enter India. How do you see the streaming and FM Radio players evolving their offerings? The biggest thing is content. When we look at the way live streaming is kind of shaping up, most of the people are now coming online to listen to music. Given Gaana’s brand presence, we have been fortunate that people come to us as the first port of call. It is our job and duty to make sure the kind of content that we offering to the customer is absolutely top-notch, and that's why we have invested not just in Hindi music but in regional music, English music, and now non-film music, podcasts, radio programs… we are doing a lot of meditation and devotional programs too… all that will be part of our Radio Podcast offering. So the idea is to create more and more diverse content for the Indian consumer as he comes online, and to make the entire process of consumption easy through voice search, through a lot of interventions on the app where you can see the entire app translated into 12 languages, a voice-led recommendation approach where you mention just one song and you can lean back and listen to 15 songs on the platform. So the idea is to have the best content and then create a seamless experience for the Indian user who doesn't want to do much effort to discover the songs. The idea is to create more and more diverse content for the Indian consumer as he comes online, and to make the entire process of consumption easy through voice search and interventions on the app in 12 languages, a voice-led recommendation approach where you mention just one song and you can listen to 15 songs on the platform. Have the best content and then create a seamless experience for the Indian user who doesn't want to put in too much effort to discover the songs Gaana already has close to half its user base in the 15-25 age group, and you’re reportedly targeting a 600 million user base by end-2022. But looking back, what have been the best accomplishments of Gaana in the last 12 months? The 100 million is a big, big milestone for us as we've grown almost from 60 million last year to 100 million as we close the year, and that is a big milestone because I think the way music streaming is catching up in the country, pretty much the entire population will be online in the next five years. That is the biggest achievement because we are not just growing, but are building a new category altogether in the music space. What future plans are you most excited about? The biggest thing that we are excited about is kind of creating more and more content for the customer, and that essentially is through backing the regional music. I think India is a diverse country, there's a lot of music to be explored. We are doing a lot of work, which will come to the fore this year. Because of what we did with Punjabi music in the last few years, today, Punjabi music is almost as big as English music on my platform, and it used to be half of English music; perhaps lower than that. So the idea is that I bring the same level of competence on Tamil, Telugu, Hariyanvi, Bhojpuri… because that's what the customer wants to listen to, because nothing is as close to your heart as the song in the language of the place where you were born, you're brought up, you have so many memories that are attached to those kinds of songs.
