Screwtape Letters Wins Over Helluva Boss
Premise: A business based in hell that involves sinners.
Helluva Boss:
* Tries to turn hell into a wussy safe place where people get on you for saying the r word and the b word.
* Heaven is being revealed to be boring and structured full of rules.
* Hell is portrayed to be a bit more chaotic, but yet not so different from how the living word is shown.
* The citizens actually have a compass to know right from wrong as a result it’s confusing how this is hell when people have standards not so different from earth.
* Hell’s worldbuilding is a mess not understanding why there would be jails and rehabilitation clinics since the thing is hell is about you not getting better but worse.
* It really doesn’t understand demonology or theology as they the creator thinks.
* The targets are made to be as bad as possible to make them feel it’s karmic they are being killed.
* It has increasingly juvenile humor that was funny but later gets very old.
______________________________________________________________
Screwtape Letters:
* Hell is portrayed as a horrible place and it’s authoritarian to the point they despise music.
* The demons to their core are evil and despise all things good. They truly can’t comprehend it and believe it to be vile. They don’t have a wrong way of doing sin but what gives better results.
* The patient is someone who we see is a moral and hope the protagonists don’t win.
* Hell is full of propaganda demonizing heaven and trying to treat it as if it’s a horrible place when it isn’t.
* There is so much humor to be found in a humorless sad shack like Screwtape.
* The worldbuilding you see is around how something like hell could function in their world and not based on just what human society is.
* It is by CS Lewis who being a Christian knows how sin works better than Vivziepop does and not a pop culture understanding of it trying to downplay how sin can work.

APOLOGY TOUR SPOILERS / HELLUVA BOSS CRITICAL POST
(please just dont read if youre a fan/are gonna be annoying in my tags/replies)
i LOVE verosika. i was super excited to see an episode all about her. she has EVERY right to be mad at blitz, and i do enjoy seeing things from the perspective of his victims. BUT.....i was really disappointed in her portrayal in apology tour. MOSTLY just because i was dissapointed in stolas portrayal in apology tour, and think this ep wouldve been better if it was more about BLITZ instead. rant under the cut
im not gonna give the whole rant about how annoying it is that stolas is constantly woobified, because 100 critical blogs have done it much more gracefully than i ever could. but it is just SO dissapointing to watch a man that couldve been SUCH a compelling villain be the ONLY one who is EVER sympathized with in the show. we are supposed to feel bad for him and believe that both sides are wrong in the stolitz situation, when stolas' crimes are SO MUCH WORSE than all of blitzs bad deeds combined. he co-erced blitz into a sex contract as the only means of doing his job, and then made HIM feel guilty for not falling n love with him during it. the 'both sides are in the wrong' comment gets particularly frustrating when the show has, tme and time again, only let stolas be the one with support. blitz is made to look unreasonable, no matter how right he is. and, in this instance, stolas is the one getting invited to this party to celebrate being ""wronged"" by blitz.
back to verosika. especially now that the episode is out, i am even more firmly on her side. the fact that blitz broke up with HER because things were getting too serious is interesting (albiet not as interesting as i think it couldve been but thats a rant for another post). im not saying she should forgive blitz, but i do struggle to fully agree with her because of how she treated stolas in the episode. she is the first to comfort him, the first to try and encourage him to shit-talk blitz, etc etc and i just dont understand.....why?
ive already had problems with her character since the sexual assault ""joke"" from spring broken, but this also really left a bad taste in my mouth. i totally understand her desire to party and sympathize with other people who were harmed by blitz, but its frustrating that stolas was invited to be among them. stolas, the man who is very much NOT THE VICTIM in his relationship with blitz. this is more the fault of the writers than verosika herself, but it is SO FRUSTRATING that she gave him the spotlight and is trying to help him heal from a situation that is ENTIRELY HIS FAULT. stolas didnt just hurt blitzs feelings, he sexually coerced and abused him. of all people, shouldnt verosika understand how terrible that can be? the kind of hurt that can do to a person? im not saying that this terrible relationship FORGIVES blitz's wrongdoings, but you shouldnt be giving his fucking abuser a stage and a microphone to talk shit about his victim. this becomes so much more insidious to me with the conversation she has with blitz on the balcony, later. this was actually a pretty good scene imo but it could certainly be better.
this is much more opinionated and i wouldnt be surprised if even the critical community isnt with me on this one, but i long for an alternate verson of this episode thats focused on verosika being on blitz's side, instead. its been over 5 years since they dated, and even though she is still allowed to be mad, it would be nice to see that shes moved on. maybe give her a new partner like barbie wire and let her throw these parties just so she can look back and laugh and help blitz's other victims heal in the same way that she has. not to bring up an also not-great show, but in rick and morty, we see a relationship between rick and one of his ex-partners named unity. they were really terrible for each other, enabling bad/unhealthy behaviors, generally being awful. their break-up was messy, but in recent seasons, we see unity coming back, upon hearing that rick was doing something self-destructive. they worried about him, because a part of them still cared, as much as they were hurt by his actions. i would have LOVED to see a similar thing with blitz and verosika, where verosika finds out about the relationship blitz is trapped in/just got out of. i think it would be SO MUCH MORE naratively interesting, for her to be supportive of his little apology tour, and maybe even inviting HIM to the "blitzo sucks" party. not everyone (or anyone) needs to forgive him; in fact, i think coming to this party would give him perspective. his relationship with stolas has hurt him so badly, he can finally step back and understand the harm that he did to all these people. the apologies that he gave, as he admits in the episode, were shallow. but i think framing stolas as the toxic one would be better in helping him realize that he has done wrong more than what the show is currently doing. and maybe some people at the party WILL forgive him. maybe he can apologize on the stage, and some people will empathize with his situation and believe that the apology is genuine, because hes finally had to be on the other end of his own hurt. and maybe THAT would be the first step in helping blitz realize that maybe he isnt completely unlovable, because there are people who cared about him enough to be THIS DEVASTATED upon getting their heart broken by him. a conversation with verosika about what he did to her would hit so much harder after this, imo
anyway. im sorry if this is completely incoherent/a bad point. i was just thinking about it and i am so sick of everyone being a stolas apologist </3

Miss Heed And Stolas Have Some Unsuspected Similarities
Even though Miss Heed reminds appearance wise of Verosika, I realized she and Stolas are basically the same type of character but the difference is how they are treated by the narrative. Stolas and Miss Heed are presented as old childhood/teenhood friends who come from privileged backgrounds and in the past used the characters for their selfish means. In the present time both still use their supposed love interests for their own means and lack any self-awareness of how harmful their actions are.
However, the biggest difference between Stolas and Miss Heed is the fact that the former isn't treated as toxic and is even pitied because of his bad marriage and having a neglectful father. On the other hand, Miss Heed has shown she too has sympathetic qualities like having low self-esteem and replacing it with her social media obsession, but one thing it doesn't do is the fact it holds her accountable for her actions and doesn't try to make it seem everything is okay. The biggest problem with Stolas is that it whitewashes his actions and tries to shift the blame onto other people including Blitzo himself. However, that doesn't erase the fact he acted manipulative towards him and leveraged the book so he can have sex with him. The narrative tries to make him a sympathetic woobie when it really just makes him more disgusting and unpleasant. This again in contrast with Miss Heed who the narrative reminds us is a pos and doesn't try to coat what shitty stuff she does.
I also noticed how the relationships progress from that episode. The episode from "Heedous Heart" knows Miss Heed still has feelings for Flug, but it's the fact that she uses and abuses people to feel better about herself makes it clear that their can't be a relationship because it would end up with her just using him over and over again. And frankly Flug is wise to see it and leave her where she is instead of enabling her like he did in the past. This is in contrast with the end of "Ozzie's" where instead of validating Blitzo's right to put his foot down with Stolas we are meant to see it as him being too closed to open himself up. And the biggest focus is just on how sad it is that Stolas wants him but Blitzo won't let him in (despite the fact that Stolas used him to satisfy himself). And that is another similarity, both of them (Stolas and Miss Heed) use people to satisfy themselves regardless of how they feel and will whine when they don't get their way. Again with Miss Heed is a sign of her immaturity, while with Stolas it's a pathetic attempt at making him sympathetic.

Ivankov And Bon Clay Are Better LGBT Representation Than Stolitz

Vivziepoop might say she's the premier gay show, but Oda has been in the queer business for more than two decades than when she first had those ideas of her characters in middle school. I don't know how you can top okama kempo users like Bon Clay and Ivankov who managed to go through hell to bring the main character to is brother. Vivziepoop stans might say Stolitz is the embodiment of representation- if you want a toxic relationship that is excused over and over again until they retcon the toxic power dynamics. On the other hand, if you want someone like Ivankov who at a young age help organize an event that changed his world's course of history and is a member of the resistance against a dystopian government then check out One Piece- which some might be put off at the size but it's worth it.
Sure Stolas is a demon prince and Blitzo is an assassin, but that is when the series remembers that fact and just have them focus on wangsting about how strained their relationship is. While Oda never makes us forget that Ivankov and Bon Clay like everything else in the series is a badass to respect all while being camp as possible. Heck with it, Ivankov is better at crossdressing than Blitzo does and it's with the help of his devil fruit which can convince a certified lady's man like Sanji to be turned on by his female form. Best of the series actually handles the idea of them going up against an unfair system better than Helluva Boss because they don't gut that storyline to make away for romantic slop that downplays the rich partner's flaws. These two have got nothing on One Piece's best.

Here's some good Hazbin/Helluva critical videos I've seen (since it's so hard to find good ones on YT)
(Both are by GalXE!)
(Left one is by HezuReviews, right is by Autistic Swag!)
(Both are by Madeline Maye!)
(Both are by Cassidy Whiskey!)
Please go check these people out, all of them are extremely talented. Some of them even shared some insight and clever criticism into this series that I hadn't even thought of! (I especially like the Madeline Mayne ones as they poke into how both HB and HH fail at their queer representation.)

This is plot manipulation if I've ever seen it.
Let me be clear, making Stella abusive is not the issue. The issue is the pandering the narrative does to Stolas here. Stolas is shown to us as a bright-eyed, sensitive kid. Stella, as a child as young as Stolas and in the same position as him, is shown to us as a violent and malicious heathen. It goes out of its way to establish, before they've even met, that Stella is the abuser and Stolas is the poor victim.
Viv says she was inspired by Bojack Horseman. As a HUGE fan of BH, I think her and the other writers really missed the mark. For reference, let's look at Bojack and his abusive mother Beatrice, both as children.

Do you see the difference? Do you see the way it's emphasized that they both started out as just children in shitty situations?
And they still maintain that Beatrice was a monster. They humanize her without excusing her behavior. They humanize Bojack without excusing his behavior. No one starts off as a bad person, but the fact that the HB writers try to hammer in that Stella from the start was an irredeemable monster while Stolas is the sole victim throughout his entire life doesn't sit well with me

Virgin Vivziepop/Chad Scott Cawthon
I am going to be straight up despite how people Scott Cawthon for his donations to conservative politicians he’s the better person than a lot of progressives have tried to hold up Vivziepop in the past. He actually takes criticism to heart and even tries to make fun of himself and not try to throw a tantrum when people hound him unlike Vivziepop. I am not an active part of the FNAF fandom, but I treat the flaws of the franchise as passable because the fan stuff is fun and Scott now lets other do their stuff after that campaign where SJWs harassed and gave death threats to him.
And funny enough Vivziepop got on the bandwagon and even tried to subtly justified he was getting what was coming to him for donating to wrong people in her mind. And the two faced heifer worked with him in the past, but turned on him when it was popular. And again it really shows what kind of a friend she truly is and it should have been my first sign she was a pos.
And again while Cawthon has issues with his franchise, but think about this he actually took that advice to heart rather than wallow despair when his Bible based stuff didn’t work. This girl on the other hand when people have criticized her since Zoophobia she just ignores and treats them as haters and as a result she ends up having her projects fall apart and people are noticing the major flaws. Unlike Scott, Vivziepop isn’t a humble person she really wants to be right and can’t stand the fact. As a result she will be in for a rude awakening when she realizes people no longer can be kept under her spell with her usual tricks.

Why does Viv try to subvert these moments that would've made Moxxie, Alastor, and Charlie a lot more badass than before? It would've showcased their development/growth, but they ended up getting the short end of the stick.
Moxxie ends up being saved by Millie, Alastor got his ass kicked by Adam and then just vanishes, and Charlie got her ass kicked, and Lucifer has to come in and kicks Adam's ass effortlessly.
Don't these characters deserve a moment of awesomeness on their own without anybody’s help? I'm not saying that it's not okay to ask for help, but these characters should've been able to handle them well on their own.

"As a child of divorce, I just feel like no one has pointed out how messed up and scary it is for stolas to effectively lose custody of Octavia, and then show up to the place she's staying and assault one of the adults protecting her. Yeah, narrativly Stella and andraelphus are villians, but those are her caretakers currently. I just don't see anyone talking about this angle"

I have to be honest I prefer wr1teanons jjba x hazbin hotel/helluva boss series over the canon stuff ( I do not like what they did with lucifer or lilith etc) or them going away from the initial premise to be a war with heaven. or how the sins arent so evil ( not t omention pretending there are positive sides to sins when the whole reasons they are sins is because there are no positive sides. The sin of pride is when your pride gets excessive ( and your pride can lead you to commit other sins or keep you from redeeming yourself like say belief that you are better etc) you can still have some pride in yourself and it wont be a sin. In fact the sins can mix with each other like envy and wrath
envy and lust are poison to your souls with envy you hate someone for having something you dont have and that hate can hurt youor lust it can damage your relationships ( remember what asmodeus brought it up ) or ability to form an emotional bond in the future ( pair bodning stuff) etc. also lust can also lead to well the r word ( is that allowed )envy can lead you to kill someone or wish harm like envy for someone being wealthier or more successful then you like being born into wealthsome sloth mixed with say entitlement can lead to you trying to steal or demand money from people without working for it ( it would be one thing if they were just born into wealth and using the money they were born with to laze around)like imagine someones pride getting in the away from admitting they have a problem
pride leading them to feel they deserve something more than someone elseetcsee the tax the rich people or communism or people for ubi saying they shouldnt need to work to live its greed mixed with envy plus sloth for its demanding other people to work and give you money ( and its an idiotic idea for there are always jobs people dont want to work

I keep seeing all of the Vivdrama reblogs and let me say as an observer, Viv is the worst with criticism. She seems to believe that all criticism is bad, from what I’ve noticed on Twitter/X seems to pick and choose what to respond to like she had a whole rant about someone making fun of her show’s constant swearing (because that’s more important), blocks people with actual criticism (especially people who bring up Alastor and his voodoo background) and it kinda hurts to see. I used to look up to Viv, her old art looked cool but seeing what she does now in terms of designs and criticism, it’s looking really bad. Like some of these criticisms are important, like her designs of some characters (especially her black characters), and recently in regards to SA, and even her YouTube show. I have seen Helluva Boss and it’s really something. Not good but it’s something, it feels like a speed run and hearing how Hazbin Hotel has 8 episodes (I genuinely hope that’s not the whole season), it feels like Viv doesn’t wanna expand or build and just wants to get to “the good parts” which some aren’t that good. It just sucks, people who have critics on how Viv writes, designs characters or have actual points to make have a good point and I genuinely don’t like when Viv stans argue otherwise. Sorry this was long, just wanted to say my piece
Wow, that's really bad! And I hate creators and public figures who block people who constructively criticize them. That's just a low, immature, and rotten thing to do. 👎🏾

Vivziepop fans claiming adding black features to her black characters would’ve made it “too difficult” to animate them is a hilarious excuse considering this is the same woman who had characters like these animated:

Another excuse fans have been using is that Vivziepop’s art style is “unsuitable” for black characters, despite her crew members proving otherwise:

No art style is "unsuitable" for black characters because it's the artist's responsibility to learn how to draw them in their style. There's no excuse for black characters not looking black in your style.
Vivziepop could draw black features in her style but CHOSE not to, hence why none of the black characters look black outside their skin color, which sometimes they don't even have.
