Witchy, Volume 1.
In the witch kingdom Hyalin, the strength of your magic is determined by the length of your hair. Those that are strong enough are conscripted by the Witch Guard, who enforce the law in peacetime and protect the land during war. However, those with hair judged too long are pronounced enemies of the kingdom, and annihilated. This is called a witch burning.
Witchy is a young adult graphic novel about the young witch Nyneve, who is haunted by the death of her father and the threat the Witch Guard poses to her own life. When conscription rolls around, Nyneve has a choice to make; join the institution complicit in her father's death, or stand up for her ideals?

🔺 THE SECOND SAFEST MOUNTAIN by Otava Heikkilä is now live on Kickstarter!
THE SECOND SAFEST MOUNTAIN is mature, hardback graphic novella about leaving the mountain dedicated to sacred women, and the repercussions of entering the world below. When Aru ventures into the land beneath the mountain, they are soon confronted with what it means to leave the safety of being holy and beloved. A queer, surrealist horror from the creator of Letters for Lucardo.
"Haunting, allegorical horror at its finest. Heikkilä's comics are a masterclass in pacing and suspense." - Mel Gillman, As the Crow Flies
"Through its powerfully unsettling atmosphere and deeply human characters, The Second Safest Mountain illuminates why Heikkilä is one of the most exciting working cartoonists of the moment." - Ariel Slamet Ries, Witchy
"The Second Safest Mountain is visceral, stunning and dreamlike. It grips me by the heart. Otava can say so much with one look, one glance, one cast shadow." - Jess Fink, Chester 5000

what is apparent from a lot of comics disk horse is that aside from the characters a lot of people hold some degree of disdain for comics as a medium and practise for telling stories. they think it’s beneath them and refuse to engage on any level,
anyway i encourage everyone to read indie and autobio comics from artists who aren’t a part of the big two. read ariel slamet ries and petra nordlund and linnea sterte and emily carroll and marjane satrapi and maybe you’ll feel better

Call me Sea! (they/them) I'm a Non-Binary Aromantic Asexual Filipino American and Full-Time Library Worker (currently in my late 20s)! In my spare time, I bounce from interest to interest while doodling and writing and exploring different aspects of storytelling. I tend to view things under a queer lens or have fun thinking about what if scenarios. You'll mostly see me posting fanworks, but every once in a blue moon I'll let my original work see the light of day.
I do not take commissions, but I will sometimes ask for doodle requests. DO NOT ask me to create anything that promotes incest, pedophilia, or acts of bigotry (racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, etc) in any form (Don't Interact with me if you support that stuff either). I also don't create anything NSFW, but I'm usually fine seeing that kinda content (except fetish and heavy gore). I'm Very Fond of hurt/comfort scenarios, familial bonds, and sapphic romance, so absolutely talk to me about that stuff if you wanna!

1, 3, 12, 25 📚❤️
1. How many books did you read this year?
61 at current count i think, much less than usual with some pretty heavy slump periods. but i think i'm back in my reading groove now so 😊
3. What were your top five books of the year?
in no particular order
a ghost in the throat by doireann ní ghríofa
witchy by ariel slamet ries
bridge of clay by markus zusak
don't call us dead by danez smith
tipping the velvet by sarah waters
and sneaky bonus
foster by claire keegan [a reread, but one of my all time favourite books]
12. Any books that disappointed you?
station eleven by hilary st john mandel and exit west by mohsin hamid. they were both perfectly decent, and with flashes of brilliance, but i'd long heard them talked about like truly breathtaking fiction and they just didn't live up to what i expected of them tbh
25. What reading goals do you have for next year?
I don't tend to set reading goals, bc I don't want to approach it too task oriented. post college i really had to train myself back into reading without purpose but "to read", and I just love a list and plan too much to have that work for me really. I'd like to get through the tbr pile significantly and read more poetry generally I think, but that's about it 😊

Witchy is a comic about the young witch Nyneve, who is haunted by the death of her father and the threat the Witch Guard poses to her own life. When conscription rolls around, Nyneve has a choice to make; join the institution complicit in her father's death, or stand up for her ideals? [Image and summary via Goodreads]
Review: I've had Witchy on my to-read list for a while, back when it was available solely as a webcomic. The art is just stunning, which was the main draw for me. When I found out what it was about, I knew I had to read it -- and happily, you can now get it in print form! Creator Ariel Ries tweeted out in October of 2019, "Read Witchy, my good and fun comic about queer Asian witches, strange birds, and cool mums." I'm not sure what else there is to say about such an incredible comic, but I'll do my best to muddle through it.
Witchy follows one Nyneve, who has grown up beneath the shadow her father's death at the hands of the Witch Guard -- one that she might be conscripted to join. In the kingdom of Hyalin, your magic ability is measured by the length of your hair. The longer your hair, the stronger you are. But if you're too powerful, the Witch Guard considers you a threat. Nyneve must grapple with her past and how to survive in Hyalin.
It's an incredibly compelling story, one that grips you from the first page. The worldbuilding is layered and fascinating. On top of that, it's super queer and has breathtaking art. Oh, and there's a talking bird. What more could you want? This is a comic featuring queer Asian witches, which is awesome and would get my support based on that fact alone. But in addition to that, the worldbuilding, story, and art are just out of this world.
I'm looking forward to the sequel, if there is one, and if there isn't, I'll be following the comic closely online! Witchy is a must-read and a must-buy -- the queer Asian witches, talking bird, and kickass mom are reason enough.
Recommendation: Buy it now!
