I have discovered yet another layer to the swimming ick that is King Triton.
You know how in the third movie he banishes music cause his wife died... because of pirates... that weren't playing music by the way so it makes no fucking sense, but I digress.
Yes, I know it's because he associates his wife with music, but it's still stupid.
I just read that apparently Ariel is 15 in the third movie, right. And in the first movie she's 16. So all that happens in TLM 3 happens just ONE YEAR before the events on the first movie.
That means that not only did Triton BANISH MUSIC and throw multiple of his people in jail, including Sebastian... but less than a year later, when he finally "un-banishes" music, he ACTUALLY starts making Sebastian create a concert to honor TRITON as if he wasn't the tyrant who banished music in the first place??? And threw Sebastian in jail for participating in music??? Excuse me???
The level of narcissism in this man shows no boundaries.

Happy 16th Anniversary, the Little Mermaid 3: Ariel's Beginning
Today marks the 16th Anniversary for
Tumblr media
The Little Mermaid III: Ariel's Beginning, the final film of The Little Mermaid cartoon franchise.
Tumblr media
Already it had been 16 years where we got to see how Ariel's Beginning started before the first film.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Queen Athena, King Triton's wife and Ariel's mother was dead when the human pirates took some of the merfolk's musical instruments, and because of that Triton banned music from the kingdom. After that, he had a hatred of humans ever since.
Tumblr media
We also got to see Ariel's sisters; Attina (the eldest), Alana (the glamorous one), Adella (the boy-crazy), Aquata (the middle child who's also obsessive-complusive and a terrible dancer), Arista (the fun-loving and music-playing one who always borrows Aquata's stuff), and Andrina (the sassy wisecracker) get some screen time, and the first film we don't see Ursula the Sea Witch with Marina taking that role trying to be Triton's attache.
We all see how Ariel first met with Flounder and she and her sisters learn that Sebastian was making a secret club playing music. Thanks to Ariel, music was welcomed back to the kingdom.
It is also the last time we got to hear Samuel E. Wright's voice as Sebastian before he died. May he rest in peace. He will always be our best Sebastian since the first movie, and he made a good Mufasa in The Lion King Broadway Musical.

"Is Marina Del Rey Urs-"
No, Marina Del Rey is not Ursula. They are too different characters.
Good bye.

What's with Adella's hairdo and color scheme?
Tumblr media
Adella herself is lovely. But I really don't care for the color scheme and hairstyle that the animators decided to stick her with.
Besides pearl scrunchies getting repetitive, that long front-bun is just...odd. To boot, the shades of gold and green they picked remind me of baby food.
There were probably reasons for all of this in the first movie, possibly related to the complexities of the film's animation. But when the TV series came and they tweaked many of the sisters' designs, the only changes made to Adella's was simplifying her hair and making her the token "fat" sister.
Tumblr media
In fairness, Adella's odd hairstyle in the movies does highlight how different hairstyling can be in a society that lives in zero-gravity.
Tumblr media
But look at that mermaid behind her! That kind of hairdo would suit Adella, while making her stand apart from the other sisters. "Ariel's Beginning" was another opportunity to give Adella a better design. Instead, they used all of their best new ideas on the background extras.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
That pale pastel yellow would be much easier on the eyes than Adella's 1970s-living-room color scheme. The clamshell hair clip, or any of those flower getups, would have been lovely on her.
Tumblr media
This funny seashell hairpiece seen a couple times in the TV show would also have worked well.

I'm not a fan of Queen Athena's Original Design in the Prequel to Disney's The Little Mermaid. I love Triton's Younger version but I just don't get the design for Ariel's Mother of why she looked so much like a Boring Ariel clone when she could've had looked like either one of the Other Daughters (who, mind you, that Ariel's Sisters who have different sets of their own Colors of their Mertails and Hairs do exist besides the Main One). I mean, if the Sisters were to look a lot like both of their Parents, it would've resulted into Ariel Clones and not Original Designs.
Why is it that some of the Video-Direct Sequels always give New Characters (in case if they're relatives to the Main Character) some Bad Genetics? (*Ahem* Hunchback of Notre Dame 2...).
So I wanted to do my very own personal take on a Redesign on Ariel's Mother and even King Triton's Wife, Athena if she looked like either any one of the other Daughters instead of looking too much like the Main One. I also did want to change the Necklace just in case as well as giving her some extra jewelry.聽
I know for a fact that most of the Disney Sequels to the Main Focus of the Animated Films didn't aged well like Milk but needless to say that they're still a Guilty Pleasure but also a bunch of Nostalgia Classic to my Childhood Memories. Ngl, I felt really bad for Poor King Triton for losing a Beloved Wife who he loved but you can at least tell why he's the Most Protective King towards both his Daughters and People of the Sea.
But it's also sad to say the least that Athena is the only Mother in out of Every Media Adaptation of The Little Mermaid out there who tragically dies in a Prequel story to a Single Adaptation.

Do you like the Little Mermaid direct to video sequels?
I think they're pretty good, I enjoy them. I remember watching Return to the Sea a lot when it first came out when I was 6. I had it on VHS I probably wore it out I don't actually know what happened to it. and then I was in High School when Ariel's Beginning came out, I remember enjoying it and still do now but I am still so mad they never released a proper official soundtrack for it because I need the full studio versions of 'I Remember' and 'I Will Sing' (the song that plays right at the end) like now they're such good songs!
