1. Which of your fics would you keep the basic plot of but rewrite completely?

Definitely one of my DC fics. I have quite a few that I started as a weekly writing exercise, but I wish I had more of a structure. I feel like the chapters don't hit as well when I'm writing off ✨vibes✨.

If I had to pick one, it would be my crackship the sun & the sea -- it's based off my roleplay with my partner. I wanted to add the scenes in between that we didn't get to write and bind it for her, but it doesn't make sense without the roleplay parts. I would like to re-write it as a proper fic.

9. Thoughts on cliffhangers.

As a reader, REEEEEEEEE!

As a writer, EHEHHEHEHEHE. I love cliffhangers. I think I do too many cliffhangers? I don't know if they're actual cliff hangers, but if the scene needs to end there, then it will end there.

I view cliff hangers as a writing tool as punctuation and stylistic writing. You're telling your readers to pause here, and you're making them process and take in what they've read. Especially in a world where binging is more and more common, cliffhangers allow specific plot points to sink in. Not that they don't normally, but readers are forced to sit with it now hehhehehe.

24. Thoughts on flashbacks/flashforwards.

I don't like flashfowards because I'm too dumb to understand the time jump and I feel like they're... spoilery? I only really use flash forwards for opening scenes and then we take it all the way back.

As for flashbacks, I prefer to segment them with italics, some kind of formatting break or their own chapters because it's so easy to lose your reader if you haven't executed the flashback well enough. Visual media can rely on cues like younger actors, and setting, but as a writer you need to be detail-oriented enough to write all that out. I am notoriously lazy as fuck so... I don't do them. I don't mind reading them tho.

26. What would you describe as OOC?

I like this question a lot because as someone who lives outside of canon more often than not, I usually write crackships or take characters out of their canon worlds into new ones. For example, my greatest master piece with my writing partner is set in a The Boys x Supernatural universe (so their rules), featuring Geralt (the Witcher), Lambert (the Witcher), Lilith (Diablo 4), Erwin (Attack on Titan), Clark Kent (Superman), Gojo Satoru (JJK), Arisma Kishou (Tokyo Ghoul) and Obi-Wan Kenobi (Star Wars). It was the single most EPIC story I have ever read and written lmao. THAT SAID, I firmly believe that there are base values that every character has that defines them, whether mental, physical or anything else. These are what 'anchor' the character. If it's a original story, then there are events that inform the character. Think big details, not small details.

From a fandom perspective, usually, the fandom will agree on the aforementioned base values. For example, Superman is kind, just and generally wholesome. People can put him in different situations, but you can still recognize the character. This is what differentiates good writing from bad writing; if you can change the character's name, upbringing and current occupation and you still can recognize the character from their inherent values and the way they act, that's totally in character for me.

If you're writing a character and you break the 'base value' rules without justifying it in the narrative, then that's OOC. For example, there are versions of Superman who kills or becomes a world ruler, but there are events that lead up to it so it makes sense.

So to me, pretty much everything is fair game if you can justify it in the writing (and not by telling me, it's gotta be earned).

Dynamic Omniversal Roleplaying Kit, The Dork Lord, 1991

D.O.R.K. is a GURPS heartbreaker.

For those not familiar with the term, a "Dungeons and Dragons Heartbreaker" is a game where someone looked at D&D, the only game they had ever played, and said "You know what, I can write a game that's D&D but better!" Then, because they have no exposure to the wider field of game development, they proceed to make something that's... basically still D&D. It has one or two small improvements, but no one cares, because it's still basically D&D, and at that point, why not just play the world's most heavily supported RPG? It breaks your heart to see someone pour so, so much time and energy into a game that has some genuinely good points that no one is ever going to play. DORK is a D&D heartbreaker, but for GURPS 2nd Edition.

The most obvious change is that there are now five stats: ST, DX, IQ, HT, and the new CH(arisma), breaking the social rolls and skills explicitly away from Intelligence. They make a big deal of this, and it sort of is, because it has knock-on effects for everything IQ-oriented.

Minor changes abound. Some of those are intentional, some may just be because everything had to be rewritten by hand (since actually copying another book word-for-word is illegal). Some of the Advantage and Disadvantage costs have been adjusted. Some of them have small but key differences. Some of the Skills are now Advantages and vice versa - for instance, languages are now Advantages, and Detect Invisible is a skill (IQ, Very Hard). Combat has no core changes, but HP totals are twice HT instead of just HT. There are also a bunch of options added. Some of those work and some are broken - especially any that might feel like "Rule of Cool" or "badass special ops" tactics. The book is about 1/3 longer than the GURPS 2nd corebook just because of those. None are marked as optional. In fact, unlike GURPS, DORK has no particular directions about what's considered core and what's considered optional. It really feels like people are supposed to use absolutely every rule.

Art is pretty sparse. I'm not sure where it came from, since there are no credited artists. I suspect the writer was also the artist. It's... ok. They at least have a basic grasp of anatomy, if not how to make it look like anything's in movement.

The game is credited to "The Dork Lord" rather than a games company. It was printed in softcover by a printing company that I sure hope has gone out of business, because the only copies of this I've ever seen were in three-ring binders after the softcover's binding failed. By the time this book had been published, GURPS 3rd had been out for over two years, and DORK disappeared with barely a ripple.

I WILL ALWAYS REMEMBER A SAYING I HEARD YEARS AGO: Musicians must eat crow, smile, and ask for more. After playing in many short-lived bands early in my career, I realized that my quest for the big time was not going to be an easy one—and that perhaps there was some truth to this quote!

The early stages of building a musical career can be a very trying time, and they may teach you more about your breaking point than you care to know. It's quite a juggling act to write, rehearse, and record your music while trying to learn the business aspect of music and stay sane. (Sanity is, of course, an option in the music industry.)

When talking with aspiring players, I'm often asked how they can get started in the music business. Well, I've got to be honest with you—when I started out, the whole thing seemed like a big mystery to me, too. So the first thing I say is: "You don't wake up one day and realize you've made it." It doesn't just happen; you must work diligently and hope your talent and persistence (plus a little luck) will eventually lead to the breaks that are needed to have a professional music career.

If you're searching for the secret to success, I suggest you stop right now and realize there's no such thing. In fact, all I can really do in this book is share my experiences—as well as those of some of my fellow professionals—in the hope that you will learn enough to be able to createyour own niche in the world of music. So if anyone tells you he has it all figured out, 1 suggest you walk away and save yourself from an earful of B.S.

While being in the right place at the right time can be helpful, I feel that individuality, ty, ch arisma, and integrity are the real keys to any artist's survival. Hey, I'd love to spell out a magical plan for overnight success, but there just doesn't seem to he one. The good news is that most of us use a similar approach in piecing together the essentials of a music career, and those essentials are what I've tried to put in this book.

For starters, put things in perspective and figure out what it is you want from playing music. Do you want to make music a full-time career, or is it just a leisure pastime reserved for special occasions? Then ask yourself how much you're willing to sacrifice in order to achieve your goal. The answers to these questions may seem obvious, but you'd be surprised to know how many musicians have become distracted by their lifestyles and completely lost sight of their original goals. By establishing a game plan, you can focus your energies and not squander valuable time and money.

In the early stages of your career, a few simple steps will get you off to a good start. First things first: write your own music. Second, seek out all performance opportunities; consider playing parties, dances, and nightclubs to be basic training. These gigs are great jumping-off points for tightening up your act and learning to read an audience's response.

If you're already in a band and making live performances, it's crucial to be on the scene and regularly networking through word of mouth. Believe it or not, this can be just as important asyour actual talent. If you think someone will knock onyour door one day and invite you to become rich and famous, you'd better think again. In Minnesota, where grew up, my earliest bands spent a great deal of time hanging up flyers in our hometown and the neighboring cities. We played all the usual high school dances and keg parties, and we took slots opening for established acts, hoping that some-one would "discover" us. We didn't become instantly success-ful, but I learned that the more you make your presence known through your own efforts, the more you improve your chances of succeeding.

This leads us to the next step: putting together a team of people who will help to further your career. A reliable team of professional managers and agents can take your musical vision to new heights. My experience has been that without the guidance of these key people, it's virtually impossible to be a real contender in the music business.

Young musicians are especially vulnerable to the "sharks" who feed on naïveté. I suggest meeting with as many managers, agents, and record-label executives as possible—find out what they're about and what they have to offer, where's nothing wrong with absorbing as much information — as possible, but before you sign any long-ietrn agreements with anyone, you must be very clear on how the vision of these people is going to fit in with yours.

One good way to investigate managers, booking agents, record companies is to talk with artists who have already worked with them. It may be worthwhile to set up a showcase and invite as many of these people to the performance as possible. This can be done either publicly in a nightclub or privately at a sound stage. A showcase is a great way to create a "buzz" about your act—but if you live in a remote part of the world, it may mean considerable travel and expense. It might be better to send a representative of your group to a major music metropolis to generate interest within the industry. That way,you can develop local contacts—and it's a whole lot cheaper than moving the whole band!
