OK OK I FINISHED BINGING THE ENTIRETY OF NATLA AND I GOTTA SAY IT WAS A GREAT ADAPTATION!!!

Here are my thoughts so far:

The parts where I still had my reservations for the first half were definitely addressed in the second. There were more Kataang beats, especially in the last three episodes.

Please that whole part before the zutara showdown where Aang goes like "go easy, enough ppl have suffered" and zuko is more or less like "lol it's cute u think i'd hold back" and then aang has this proud little smirk like "oh i wasn’t talking to you"😏 Also his proud little smirk when Katara is fighting Pakku PLEASE HE IS GOING TO BE THE PROUDEST BF

They covered the most important points and had a decent few scenes of fan service, loved that.

However, the adaptation is not perfect and there are definitely parts that were lacking, at least to me. Primarily, I think they did our girl Katara a little dirty not emphasizing as much on her arc as opposed to Sokka's, for example, and also the way her ascension to master was pretty telly instead of showy

There was definitely something to love in every episode, but I think the weakest ones have to be Omashu and Spirited Away.

My ABSOULUTE FAVORITE episodes were Into the Dark and Masks. Dallas, Paul, and Gordon did SUCH a great job in them. I cannot WAIT for the proper leaves from the vine scene and also to have more of zuko interacting with aang.

My favorite was Zuko by far, yes. I think the performance and the was he was written struck the best balance of that goofiness and tragedy atla is originally known for. That’s not to say the other kids didn't do a good job, but Dallas' Zuko was by far the best imo

I understand now what the showrunners meant by making the show more mature and serious. I cannot say I didn't like it, but I can see it being an acquired taste especially for the part of the fandom that is more purist/demanding. I like that the focus emphasized more on the consequences of war and that it reflected on the cycles of violence and hurt, what they do to a person and how the wounds pass down generationally. I think this emphasis on war, compassion, kindness, all those things are definitely an important message in this time and day. However, it is a little too serious for my taste, PRECISELY because of the times we are living in. Back when the OG came about the world was in a time of relative peace. But now we get pictures of carnage and genocide mixed in with videos of cute puppies, so it's definitely a different place. It was much easier to understand the gravity of the genocidal/bombing scenes imo, almost to a point that they seemed watered down/kid friendly compared to the real thing that we see on our phones everyday. Because of that, I think erring more on the comedy, the balance between what it ACTUALLY means to be hopeful and not just talking about it, is the one thing the show could improve upon for next seasons.

All in all I am VERY pleased with the adaptation. There were moments where I definitely bawled my eyes out, shouted, and laughed the same way I did the first time I watched the show. All I can say is, for those still on the fence about watching it, so long as you go in with an open mind and with the explicit objective of enjoying yourself, it will be a fun watch.

Sparkling Spring is... confused? He isn't opposed to Heart having a crush on Dark Heart, but he just doesn't see the appeal personally. Whatever makes him happy, Spring supposes. Say, I wonder what Y/N's doing about now...

Sparkling Flower doesnt like this! Doesnt like this at all! What if Heart leaves them?! No no no no, this can't be happening! They're a group, they're best friends! Forever! All Dale experienced in season 3 was trauma, with no silver lining. Then one week later he is magically still a reporter. The whole Kay relationship dragged throughout the season while he couldn't kiss ONE man, did the rent boy even have a name? Do we just have to hope for the best and that he worked it out? Did ABC not allow it? Because that's the only logical explanation I can find, being the "80s" doesn't work when this show proved this only matters when it's convenient .

I think it was way too gratuitous. Also, no Gerry and only two episodes with Tim should have told me how this season was going to go. He never even talked about his feelings with Helen

I loved what they did to Helen and liked Noelene's arc. Just wish more thought and care was put into Dale's.

Mm, I mean, his arc was a straight line down in many respects, yes, but I don't think I'd say all he experienced was trauma at all? I think the show was pretty clear that he had a lot of love and compassion around him that he refused to allow himself access to due to his own self-loathing and internalised biphobia. Helen never wavered in her support of him, but Rob sided with him against Lindsey and tried to help him oust him, Tim was gentle with him when he really didn't have to be, and their connection to me felt maintained as a missed one as opposed to a lost one (the scene where Dale pulls Kay onto the dancefloor when everyone else leaves as Tim and Lee dance really moved me, and felt like this reminder of who he is really), Cheryl genuinely tried to help him, however briefly, and Nick, the sex worker (he did have a name!) offered him tenderness and refused to participate in his abuse of himself. Even Kay tried to help him at the end, and while I do think their relationship was underdeveloped, I also think it made sense for both of them.

The tragedy of his arc this season to me was that so much of what he was going through was self-inflicted. He's so desperate to wash out these parts of himself and be something he's not that he tries to empty himself of everything that he is, and falls apart when it doesn't work. People still think he's gay, they still think he's effeminate, fey, the one thing he's been desperately trying to hide, even more so after he was already clocked by Tim in s1, and Gerry in s2, and the fact that it's not just people with the same 'proclivities' that see it, but everyone, even when he's performing, it just breaks him.

In that sense, I think it made total sense he wasn't kissing Nick. He was trying to deny himself intimacy on every level - like you said, he wouldn't talk to Helen about any of it, couldn't really talk to his mum until that devastating scene in Helen's kitchen, could only talk to Kay about it when he was drunk, could barely talk to Tim about it either. He was paying for sex with men (a man) to make it a physical act instead of a romantic one, something to wrong that he just had to regularly get out of his system, and I think they made that really clear when Dale tried to get Nick to hit him.

I didn't think he was fine in Berlin at all either. I think Helen was giving him the chance to figure himself out on the road in the same way she got the opportunity to, and he took it. I agree that there should've been a beat between the scene with his mother and that scene of him reporting, but I get what they were aiming for. Dale wanted to be a newsreader his entire life, but briefly he was a pretty good journalist in s1 when he was on the road with Tim and the sound guy. If there's a space there for him to work and travel and live for himself in a place where people don't know him, maybe he'll figure himself out. Do we just have to hope for the best? Yeah! It's an open ending, and I think that makes sense for his character.

My 9-1-1 Thoughts

This is long winded, but I wanted to share my journey with watching this show. I need to share and release all the thoughts bouncing around my head after last nights episode before I go insane.

I'm posting my thoughts here on my main blog and then will repost it on my 9-1-1 side blog (@911andforyou). It is mostly for the show and bucktommy, if you don't want to see it please stay away and be nice.

All will be under the keep reading and I'm going to try and tag careful because I'm a nobody and don't feel comfortable posting in the tags.

P.S. this is not a goodbye to the show, I will continue to watch, I'm just sad about last nights episode and want to reflect on how I ended up watching in the first place.

I began watching 9-1-1 when it moved over to ABC. I live in a small town with not great antenna signal so I only get ABC, which means I didn't know about the show until last year.

My first episode was of course S7E1, I believe (if my memory serves me right) I think I caught the last 15 minutes of it (I have a weird work schedule so bear that in mind). Then the rest of the cruise ship arc happened and same thing caught last 15- 30 minutes of those episodes too. Then i believe ABC aired all 3 episodes back to back one night and I was able to catch them all, and was hooked and also very confused.

What confused me was well everything I guess. I didn't know who these characters were, didn't know their names, even when they said them I couldn't remember them, but I was hooked all thanks to that damn cruise ship and Angela Bassett and Peter Krause. The other characters hooked me in too, their wit and humor and care for one another was a real draw.

The rest of the season went on, continued to catch episodes here and there, missed some entirely but was still hooked, trying to figure out everything with just Season 7.

Then comes the decision to binge watch, after the season had finished I knew I had to watch the other seasons to fully understand everything that went on. That, that decision has led here.

During my binge watch, I knew immediately that all these characters were important and something about them just felt comfortable to me, not sure how else to describe it.

What drew me to the show in the first place was Athena and Bobby but as I watched from the beginning each character became my favorite, in some way, shape or form. I truly do not hate any of the characters (shocker, right!). The stories were also interesting which felt like I needed to know more, no matter what the story was, whether it was backstory or an emergency, I couldn't stop watching.

Now I don't really want to get into the whole "ship wars" and everything (but I will), but imagine my surprise when I began searching online in the middle of my binge watch, for anything about the show, and came across B*ddie. Now that was truly confusing to me, I had no idea that was something people were watching for or were "seeing". I'll be honest I wasn't opposed to it at first when first reading about it, but when I re-entered the world of Tumblr (I left many moons ago, after my other dearly loved show (OUAT) and "trauma" of being in fandom sent me away) and began to read things, I was immediately turned off by it because of how mean and nasty some people were (this was before I even got to watch S7E4). Plus I just didn't see what all the B*ddies were seeing, Buck and Eddie reminded me of me and my friend where we just care about each other deeply, but have our own separate lives.

Eventually, through my binge watch I got back to season 7, understood all the cruise ship arc better then when I first watched, and continued on, which leads to being quite surprised when Buck and Tommy kissed. Now this goes back to my previous statement about the whole "ship war" I did not want to hop on to any ships, I was trying to stay very much General Audience (LOL), but I was very intrigued by BuckTommy, I don't know why but for me, there was excitement there. I continued watching and lurked around here and after some time, decided to hop aboard the BuckTommy ship. There was just something about them and all the post that I was seeing involving them seemed much more welcoming and happy compared to the other ship.

As I continued to lurk around, I felt more and more passion for the show, especially now hopping aboard a ship that I liked, there was something exciting, it felt like being in the OUAT fandom again, without the "trauma". I learned to just laugh at a stupid take, block and move on. However, I was still hesitant on actually posting about the show or BuckTommy, but lo and behold here I am, started posting after the breakup (how stupid is that LOL).

Now to last nights episode, what a gut punch. Bobby being one of the reasons that I started to watch this show, where no one dies, suddenly dying of a fucking virus. What The Hell!!! I don't really have much to say other than I'm sad and mad and clearly the creator of the show is insane, for wanting to change up the aspect of the show for "creative reasons" *cough BULLSHIT cough*. And the cast all trying to sway him to not do it, is so shitty as well.

Like I said at the beginning of my post I will continue to watch the show because as much as Bobby and Athena where the initial draw into watching the show I have developed much care and a lot of feelings for the others too, Buck, Chimney, Hen, Eddie, and Maddie. They all make me feel warm and fuzzy, and I am interested in seeing how they manage without Bobby.

Anyway.... thanks for letting me rant and reminisce.

In 1933, it took 53 days for Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party to destroy the Weimar Republic.

In 2025, on Day 53 of the attempted dictatorship of Donald J. Trump, the American Republic stands on the edge of falling after a life of 248 years.

Today, the leadership of the Democratic Party in the United States Senate gave in to the appeasement of a would-be dictator and his henchman that ranks with the failure of the Western Allies to confront Adolf Hitler when he took back the Rhineland in 1936, when he incorporated Austria into his Third Reich in 1938, when he forced the leaders of Great Britain and France to acknowledge his superiority at Munich87 years ago.

This was done despite the fact that 53% of Americans would have blamed the would-be dictator Trump for the shutdown. It was the action of nine senior Democrats and one Independent who determined that opposing him was worse than appeasing him. It was the action of Senators who are each cowards in the face of this bald-faced attempt to destroy the republic they took an oath to support and defend against ALL enemies, foreign AND domestic.

While that happened...

The would-be dictator did something today that no other American president has done since 1872, the year that the United States Department of Justice was founded as an independent agency to defend justice, an agency created to oppose the terrorism of the Ku Klux Klan. He went to Main Justice, where the Attorney General publicly named him the most important president ever, the man who would always “fight for our interests,” the president who those assembled must follow.

The would-be dictator then named all the leading media in the country - the New York Times, the Washington Post, CBS, NBC, ABC, MSNBC and CNN - his personal enemies and stated these organizations were committing “illegal acts” for opposing him. He then went on to personally name leading journalists and political leaders who have opposed him as “enemies” whose “illegal actions” should be investigated and formally charged as crimes. His words were cheered by the DOJ employees who were carefully chosen to be his audience. They now have their “marching orders,” and the orders are to destroy the democracy and rule of law on which the United States of America was founded.

While that happened...

Today, the Department of Defense announced that all information at Arlington National Cemetery related to the Civil War and to Civil War Medals of Honor, have been deleted from the Arlington records used to educate the public. In addition, the names and records of prominent minorities who served this country and are buried at Arlington in recognition of that service - Colin Powell and Thurgood Marshall most prominently - have been removed. There is now only brief mention of the connection of Arlington Cemetery - once the plantation of the great Confederate traitor Robert E. Lee - to the Civil War, the war that was fought to end the institution of human slavery.

The spokesman for Arlington said: “We remain committed to sharing the stories of military service and sacrifice to the nation with transparency and professionalism, while continuing to engage with our community in a manner that reflects our core values.” How they will do that with any connection to actual truth is beyond me.

Some of the removed content is still accessible through active links to pages on “Prominent Military Figures” and “U.S. Supreme Court,” but the categories “African American History,” “Hispanic American History,” and “Women’s History” no longer appear prominently on the site. What is no longer available is information about influential individuals like Captain Joy Bright Hancock, one of the military’s first woman officers, and Major General Marcelite Jordan Harris, the Air Force’s first female, African-American general officer.

This is only the most recent act taken to destroy the history of the United States as the country founded on the belief that “all men are created equal.” The history of oppressed Americans to gain their place in the country, the history of opposition to rule by the rich minority, is being wiped from American education as the last act of a Department of Education that is in process of being destroyed by the would-be dictator and his minions.

All of this comes on top of 53 days of a dedicated attack on the Federal Government, wiping out the departments and other units that have provided the services and help that the majority of Americans depend on from their government. There is no longer a National Weather Service to report the weather!

It can get overwhelming to consider all of this. And it can get to the point where one can conclude there is nothing they can do against these forces that appear so much more powerful than any single individual.

After Trump named him a “radical subversive” in his insane speech today at the Department of Justice, attorney Mark Elias said “We have to become our own heroes” when he was asked if he was concerned about being so named in such a situation. “I’m going to continue to do what I do,” he responded.

That’s all any of us can do.

In the end, even Hitler’s Third Reich required the consent of the governed to succeed at its evil intention. Whether that consent was freely given by “Hitler’s willing executioners,” or whether it came from a coerced silence, everyone there made a choice.

Everyone here can make a choice.

For me, the choice is easy. This IS My Country. My ancestors were among those who founded it. I can look at buildings that have existed for centuries here, and know what my ancestors did as members of the communities that existed within and around those structures. When I want to think about facing difficult choices, I can think about the three Cleaver Brothers - Isaac, James and Ezekiel - and Ezekiel’s oldest son, Ezekiel Jr. - who didn’t run away after the defeats on Long Island, who didn’t slip off into the forest as others did, who stayed to cross the Delaware River and save the Revolution, who didn’t run away during the Winter at Valley Forge, who didn’t give up after all the other defeats they endured until 1782 when they won, who were friends and fellow believers with Icon of the Revolution Betsy Ross, and I know I don’t want to piss on their graves.

Making the choice that needs to be made doesn’t need something so In Your Face as my family history - though there are days when I definitely have to think about that in order to take another step - but each of us has something to hold onto, something that’s us that gives guidance. And in the days we now live in, we need to hold onto whatever those things are more strongly than ever.

Between now and Restoration Day, whenever that comes, we are each going to be faced with a choice as important as the choice that was presented to ten Senators today, and we will need to not whiff on that, as they did.

Right now, movie person that I am, I think of the words a great writer - Paddy Chayevsky - gave to his character Howard Beale in “Network.” “I want you to get out of your chairs now, and I want you to go over to the window and open it and stick your head out and yell as loud as you can,”I”m as mad as hell, and I’m not going to take it anymore!’ Go on, get out of your chairs, go over to the window and throw it open and yell, ‘I’m as mad as hell, and I’m not going to take it anymore!” We have to do that because then they have to listen to us, much as they don’t want to.

We are living in the days when - after Restoration Day - we’ll be asked, “What did you do in those important times?” I don’t think “I ran up the white flag without even resisting” is what we want to be remembered for, as the Ten Cowards will be remembered now, forever.

Even just doing what Senator Mark Kelly did today, when he announced that he was getting rid of his Tesla because “I don’t want to be in a car designed and built by an asshole” is an important act of resistance.

We have to be like Liz Oyer, who agonized through a sleepless night about an order she was given to restore the gun rights of a man convicted of “domestic abuse” who she knew should not be given back that right, who knew she was likely going to be fired when she told her superiors her decision, who knew she would be removed from “having any say about this issue,” and went in and did it anyway because she knew she couldn’t do otherwise and live with herself.

Hollywood Ten “red” screenwriter Ring Lardner Jr. was asked to name others he knew were or had been members of the Communist Party. He looked at the congressman who asked that of him and said “I could do as you say, congressman, but then I wouldn’t like myself very much the next morning.” It took 20 years of him continuing to resist The Blacklist after saying that, before he was able to write and see made the movie “M.A.S.H.”

We won’t all get a prize like that for Doing The Right Thing (Lardner always pointed out that “I wasn’t such a smart guy - I’m the one who then turned down the opportunity to create the TV series.”)

But we do get to like ourselves in the morning.

And one thing we all absolutely have to do is not give in to despair and weakness in front of our family and friends and people we know, and give them a reason to think there’s no good to come from fighting back by telling them there won’t be elections in 2026 and 2028, no matter what we might privately believe. There’s plenty of other cowards to say that to them. Don’t be that one. This is a time to Act As If - act as if there really is a reason to resist. Act as if you believe in this country.

Believe in ourselves. And then believe in each other. These are hard difficult days, and the really hard ones have yet to arrive. One foot in front of the other, to Restoration Day.

Trump commutes federal life sentence for Gangster Disciples founder Larry Hoover - ABC News

Donald Trump has done something unique here, and I'm about to give credit where credit is deserved. Donald Trump, in his first term, reduced sentencing guidelines for crack cocaine at the federal level, which allowed unfair sentencing for African American defendants as opposed to white defendants nearly identical crimes. Donald Trump also opened up low interest loans in targeted black communities around the country. These were a good start, especially since 1968, when the Republican party decided to ignore black voters and pretend they didn't exist.

When Donald Trump first ran for president, he told black voters, " What do you have to lose?" Many took this as an insult. What he was really trying to say in an awkward way is that both parties have failed you. Give me a try. That's more than I can say for most Republican candidates who seemed to have a willingness to speak to Latino voters but shunned black voters. This apathy toward black voters was on full display in 2008 when CNN hosted a forum that specifically targeted issues affecting the black community. Neither McCain nor Romney, the two Republican front runners, bothered to even show up. Mike Huckabee, who won the IA, cacucues stared " he was ashamed" and apologized. He also stated something that's been obvious to me for a long time now, he talked about how he a Republican in Arkansas won half of the black vote, by simply showing up and talking to the voters. Many African American people are church attending folks. Many are conservative in nature.

What's this have to do with Comuting the sentence of Hoover? First off, it takes taxpayers off the hook and takes the federal Govt out of these types of cases. Hoover will never get out of prison based on state convictions alone, why spend thousands of man hours and an untold amount of money holding onto to these cases this is the right thing to do, it also highlights how black men in particular are routinely over charged and over prosecuted. Now, I'm no fan of Donald Trump. However, he does deserve credit, also in the little things like a postumus pardon to boxing great Jack Johnson a victim of racism. I still take great issues with President Trump on a wide range of issues, such as immigration, stop and frisk, show me your papers laws, but he deserves the credit for this one.

Today’s snippet is from the Rival Firefighters 🚒 fic and I’ve been having so much fun writing the chapter it’s in. I couldn’t resist making a moodboard for it either cos you know I love a good moodboard.

It’s been a long and hectic week and Eddie is extremely grateful it’s Shannon’s weekend with Chris. He loves his son and loves spending time with him, but Eddie is feeling so wound tight and needs to let off some stream in a not suitable for children kind of way. Halfway through the week he’d caved and opened up Grindr (he doesn’t usually use the app, preferring to make connections in person) and had matched with someone called Firehose. The name was a bit odd, but the guy was flirty and seemed fun and Eddie needed some fun. So they’d agreed to meet up Saturday night for drinks at a local club.

Eddie’s been to this particular club before so finding it isn’t a problem. It’s still early according to club going times, a little past 9:30 pm, so getting a car park is stress free which Eddie is grateful for. He hates not knowing a parking situation beforehand. He parks alongside a dark green jeep (or is it grey? He can’t tell in the crappy car park lighting and why is he focusing on the car’s colour anyway?) and does a quick check of his reflection in the rear view mirror before hoping out and making his way inside.

Firehose said he’d be at the bar and that he’d be wearing a dark grey short sleeved button down and that he was tall. Eddie hopes the guy isn’t one of those guys that says they’re 6 foot two but in reality are only 5 foot seven or something. Not that he’s opposed to short men, it’s just he prefers them tall and with enough muscle that he knows they could man handle him if he asked.

Eddie scans the bar and sees a guy that matches the description Firehose gave him. He can only see him from behind as the guy is turned in his seat watching a boisterous game of pool, but he’s very tall and his shirt is grey and stretching over a well muscled back. The guy’s hair is a dirty blond and looks to have been styled with something that has tamed his curls but has left his hair still looking soft. He has a sudden urge to run his hands through it. Maybe later. Eddie begins to move towards him and just as he’s about 3 feet away, the guy turns back to the bar and Eddie gets a side on view of his face.

“You’ve got to be fucking kidding me.”

Firehose, no, Buckley, turns in his seat at Eddie’s remark, a wicked grin lighting up his stupid smug face as realisation of the situation dawns on him. Firehose. The name suddenly makes so much more sense. Of course the guy Eddie was supposed to be meeting up with tonight was Buckley.

Hello !!! 💖 I'm a young satanist trying to figure out how to properly worship and live the lifestyle, but with all the Nazism and such that satanism is infected with, I'm a bit lost as to where to turn for good information that's not gonna accidentally get me on board with ideas that have nasty shit hidden in the shadows of them. Are there any good books/organizations I can look into or just some general tips? <3

We have a certain perspective on this, so bear that in mind.

What is attractive about Satanism as a concept is not really the "might is right" ideology of Anton LaVey and its worship of social stratification, and it's not The Satanic Temple's pyramid-shaped classical liberalism / Gen X trolling.

Rather, it's taking the idea that even if the story of Christian mythology were true, Satan is still the hero for looking at an omnipotent tyrant and that tyrant's proposed immutable hierarchy for the universe but choosing to rebel and grant people agency over their own lives.

And it's the idea that if the Christians say we are demonic or of the devil's party for being queer or seeking the common good of all people, well, then we're with the devil and down to party.

For that reason, anarchism is more central to Satanism than wearing black or lighting candles, even though the aesthetics are what distinguish it from other strains.

From that, Errico Malatesta is a good place to start because he wrote for a long time and focused on pamphlet-style works that could make sense to a typical person, rather than academics.

Malatesta is easy to read, and still relevant in lots of ways because he lived through so much and lived his ideals (famously, for example, refusing to talk to the cops after he was shot by a fellow anarchist over an ideological dispute).

"The ABCs of Anarchism" by Alexander Berkman is also a good introductory work for establishing fundamental values and why.

You also can listen to that one as an audio book over at Audible Anarchist.

Note that both of those are straight white men, and the "mainstream" of anarchism has often had a problem of failing to recognize or live by principles of opposing all hierarchies, including white supremacy and cishetero-patriarchy. The fact that anarchist Becky Edelsohn "dated" Berkman when she was 16 and he 36 (and that this was supported by Berkman's previous partner Emma Goldman) is one example of this. Mikhail Bakunin gave us one of the best quotes of all time regarding anarcho-satanism ("But here steps in Satan, the eternal rebel, the first freethinker and the emancipator of worlds"); Bakunin was also a racist.

Other people can give better advice and examples, but Indigenous Anarchism, Black Anarchism, Anarkata, Queer Anarchism, and Anarcha-Feminism are all areas that a person needs to put work into in order to undo the kyriarchy — the whole structure of interconnected systems of oppression we're indoctrinated into and subjected to.

"But what does that have to do with Satanism?" Mainly it's to help you spot when something you come across is engaging in the sort of hierarchical, fascistic, or even neo-Nazi ideas that LaVeyan Satanism and its offshoots have always had connected with them. They're not always obvious, and having good principles established is the best immunization and antidote to being exposed to new ideas with euphemisms and shibboleths you can't be expected to be prepared for.

You also can come up with your own rituals and ideas. For example, the Satanic Flame Ritual we have is not due to access to some secret knowledge but it helps externalize and objectivize an internal, subjective, emotional process. Things like candles and flames or altars are best seen in that light.

Anyway, hopefully that helps. It's not that you should never read something like The Satanic Bible or other esoteric works to get ideas. It is that Satanism is the exact opposite of place to look for good ideology or consistency, so you want to start somewhere else for that (we say anarchism) and then look to Satanism and other Satanists for aesthetics and inspiration for rituals that you can modify and integrate into your life in ways that best serve you.

WordPress Shifts in industry news I am not a part of but enjoy gossiping about

I used to do a a lot of work using WordPress as a system. It's easy, cheap to build and maintain with, etc.

I do not anymore. This has nothing to do with WordPress. It was exclusively a "a few years ago I received the opportunity to bow out of the industry as a graphic designer in order to pursue a cocktail of art, fantasy, economy, and business"

I used to be a customer of Advanced Custom Fields. I am no longer, for the same reason as above, I am no longer a web developer. Their service was good to me and I enjoyed it tremendously while I had it.

I have therefore no stake in this game and thus no public opinion.

And yet I enjoy the drama of it all so here we are.

WordPress is forking.

Or maybe it isn't a fork.

The core, mesmerizing, (and I do not say this lightly) potentially civilization changing beauty of open source software is the ability to meet different, often diametrically opposing, priorities.

A significant portion of the internet as we know it today is powered by WordPress. It has and will continue to shape the entire scope and scale of internet development for longer than anyone reading this will be alive -- for good and for ill.

WordPress was primarily a blogging system that could build websites as well. With the introduction of externally-based Advanced Custom Fields, it became a powerhouse web builder as well.

The short version: You could easily say "put this image / text / whatever here in the template."

It was a game changer to many smaller scale developers (hi) with a tiny staff. It allowed us (me + team) to grow much more powerful very quickly and very affordably.

Digging into the news further, there is / was chatter about pulling in the core functionality of ACF into WP's main system.

It brings an interesting point to the open source space.

And goes to my original points above.

If you make something open, how much control do you have over it? If you profit from it, how long can this last before it gets pulled into the core?

That is a risk as a developer -- you could potentially lose your business because it gets folded into the larger entity, but on the other hand, until that point, your reward was immediate accessibility to a market / system a million times larger than you, that you had previously no hand in building.

It is a tragedy of the commons.

I had long forgotten this phrase.

I'm familiar with the concept -- a public finite resource is at risk of overuse from all because it is available to all -- it largely joins with the core issue of economics itself -- how do you find balance with finite resources and infinite desires.

It is the nature of art on the internet.

Artists want to make art and it to be seen, they put it online. Audiences do not by nature owe them anything, the art is available to view for free, but without audience support, the art will stop or degrade in posting frequency.

More directly, to the WordPress sphere, what is the responsibility to the core system (thus other users)? What is the responsibility of the users to the core system?

Objectively speaking, building and maintaining a system like WordPress requires a lot of resources.

The open source nature allows for competing priorities to be served provided enough resources, because you can always say "I don't want to follow your path of ABC, I want to do BCD" and then do that.

The open source nature also allows you to say "I made a widget, it costs $100/year"

But the core can say "Hm. That would make our system stronger. Yoink. Now it's ours and is free."

Then you have a market race to push to build the better whatever.

I...

...do not have answers.

To any of this.

I am left realizing.

It feels like macroeconomics and personal economics grinding against each other in a way that is traditionally seen across countries (if not the world) and decades (if not centuries) -- but in this instance, it's a much smaller scale (kinda? WP powers a lot of the internet and influences a significant portion of what it doesn't power).

And weeks and months.

Instead of decades and centuries.

This is a fun piece of bone to chew on.

I love Stefania but I have no interest in watching/listening that podcast. Any chance you’ll do a recap of the highlights?

Sure...I just finished watching so this is what I took from it:

Says that it’s starting to sink in that it’s the series finale but also feels like they’re on hiatus and that when they’re supposed to go back in July that’s when it will probably really sink in.

They were supposed to film this podcast episode while they were still filming the finale but it was too hectic with them filming overnights and such. 

After long days of interacting with people all day long she needs time to just be alone and recharge/watches Friends to wind down. 

Stefania eats a lot of sweets on set (chocolate donuts) and then they started talking about broccoli for like 5 minutes because Stefania said she loves to eat broccoli and kale and healthier things when she travels because she’s eating all the sweet stuff on set lol

She said she’s not a good cook and didn’t inherit a cooking gene and only does it out of necessity.

Talks about transitioning from dance to acting and says that one day she just felt she was done and she loved dance, it was a great relationship but she’s ready to move on. 

She started dancing when she was six because there was this drawing competition in school and the winner got free dancing lessons for a year and she drew a ballerina and won. Did ballet first but was bored and picked it up years later and did more modern jazz type dance. 

A good portion is then spent of Gaby and Stefania speaking in italian because Gaby lived there for a while. They start to talk about an Italian tv show. 

Jaina and Gaby pointed out that Stefania looks so comfortable speaking in Italian and so herself but Stefania said when she’s acting in Italian, she’s not comfortable and prefers to act speaking English because she has an accent with every language she speaks and she has a different inflection now when speaking Italian while acting. 

North Africa is somewhere she wants to check off on her bucket list.

She prefers the grainy look to film/tv/photo and doesn’t like HD. Film makes it more poetic, dreamy, special. 

Her digital camera she carries around is from the 90’s so the quality isn’t as sharp as pictures are today. 

She talked about her episode that she directed and a lot of her ideas went hand in hand with the script like the scene where everybody was angry and so they then slammed the doors and create the rhythm to create more drama. 

She talked about Zita Sempri and the meaning of ‘always a girlfriend, never a wife’ and how her mom taught her to always keep the freshness of when you’re first dating someone and to never give up your dreams/prioritize others before your own like women tend to do especially once getting into a marriage and that's something especially known for women to do in Sicily.

She says Jeff is super sweet with humans but loves to be the alpha with other dogs and gets aggressive and shows dominance when it comes to her stuff: food, treats, etc. 

Biggest fears: losing loved ones, losing her health/getting injured. Then talks about how she booked Grey’s two days after she was in acting class crying about her accent thinking it was too limited and she wouldn’t get a juicy role. And the minute they got told Station 19 was cancelled, all the fears she had about her accent came back that she will never book a role again.  (ABC count your days for this)

They talk about the difference in fashion/style in Italy compared to the US and Stefania says she has a different closet for clothes she wears in Italy and it’s much more structured/fancy as opposed to when she’s in LA wearing t-shirt/jeans.

They talked about how social media makes everything feel more aware and rigid and like there’s a filter and you have to be careful what you post not to upset anyone and constantly have to edit and you’re less free, authentic, less yourself. 

Stuck on an island and you could have three things: pizza, Jeff, something to drink (she mentioned bringing a water fountain lol)

Something people don’t know about her: she’s shy/reserved. It takes a while for her to open up to someone but once she does she’s more outgoing. She feels like a burden when opening up to someone so she has to make sure it will be well received/feels comfortable doing so.

What she’ll miss the most from Station 19: the people - cast, crew, human connection

What are you excited for in this next chapter? Not to talk about IVF and excited to talk about more stuff that’s more authentically in line with more of what her taste is and has become throughout the years. It has been incredible to play Carina and talk about the baby storyline and the struggles of it but she’s excited to tackle other things that are more true to her. She doesn’t want to have kids and for the past 3 years she has played a character who is desperate to have kids and she said it was beautiful because it was fun to connect with this different version of her and great to act out but she’s excited to act out some things that she does care about. 

She’s working on some kind of story as a director but didn’t want to say to much about it and jinx it. 

She took a pair of Carina’s pants from set but said she should have taken Carina’s lab coat. 

Most difficult scene to shoot - Andrew’s death. Emotionally tolling, a lot of crying, exhausting. 

If she could be in any tv show airing right now what would it be? My Brilliant Friend (Italian show) and she would have loved to be in the movie 7 pounds

She tends to lean more towards drama but would love to do comedy things as well. They talk about how she can pretty much cry on cue and can just think about all the shitty things that have happened to her and it comes instantly. She does a lot of emotional scenes/has to cry a lot.

A — activites, how do they spend time with their loved one?

to be honest, i think spider-noir isn't opposed to late night diner dates. i feel like that's something he'd really be into. if he got an egg cream or milkshake he would put two straws in for the both of you

AND MATINEES OMG!! he would do the really cheesy yawn and lay his arm around your shoulder and everythingggg, im meltinggg

B — beauty, what do they admire about their dearly beloved?

i feel like with noir he would really enjoy someone with beauty and brawn. someone who definitely isn't afraid to speak their mind. he admires the way you carry yourself when you speak.

C — comfort, how would they comfort their loved one when they're upset or having a panic attack

if you're upset about something, he'll definitely take you on a walk outside. i have a feeling he might sit you down with him to throw rocks in ponds (?) idk but that feels like him. he'll maybe think that having you let off steam would help in some way with whatever it is.

if it's a panic attack, im mostly certain that he would stick with you through the good, the bad, and the ugly (heh) if you didn't want him to see you cry, he would let you use his hat while he just pets your thigh and help you steady your breathing. the way he would press little kisses all over you once you've relaxed more im sobbing

D — dreams, how do they picture their future together?

he'll definitely want to settle down with you at some point in life. if you're up for it completely, i see maybe one or two kids and a dog, definitely.

he'd wanna live ideally anywhere you dreamt of, he'll follow you into the depths of the underworld im sure of it

if you're a painter or artist, he would definitely ask for tons of colorful paintings.

also would decorate the house with flowers he bought you, of course

he would definitely slow dance with you in the living room of your new house just because he loves you so much and wants to admire your beauty up-close :((

E — equal, are they someone dominant or more passive in the relationship?

noir is most definitely a more dominant lover in a relationship. i feel like thats a bad way of putting it though ���� all i think is that he would definitely want to be the one spoiling you rotten and just looking after you

his protectiveness for those he loves is insanely strong, he would do absolutely anything for you if you asked

F — fighting, would they forgive their loved one easily?

i have a belief that noir doesn't get in dumb fights. i don't think he would get into stupid arguments with you. he knows when to shut up and let you speak as well. he'll definitely be one of those guys who cares and respects you too much to be mad at you for so long anyways.

if it's something you did that upset him, im sure he'll take a minute to think about how he wants to word it then ask you to talk for a sec
