SO glad you asked. sadly, many of the materials made for the arg have been taken down since the game ended 😔 (ex., the official OIAR, magnus institute, and bonzoland websites. (edit ii: I found partial wayback machine captures! see below) though @strangehauntsuk is still up!), so we're a bit low on primary sources, but in terms of learning about what happened:

for a starting point, I would really recommend this video by @pinkelotjeart

it's super accessible, it was made in real time as the game progressed and follows the solving and revelation of clues as they happened, it hits all the major points of the mystery and moments of community insanity while eliding some of the nitty gritty puzzle grinding, 10/10 would recommend.

here's the official summary put out by RQ, and I'd recommend reading through this once you've already gotten a basic handle on the flow of the story and the basic connections between major clues and events. it's got some fun behind-the-scenes info and lays out the thought process behind the puzzles in simple terms

here's the full masterdoc of all puzzles and resolutions put together in the statement remains discord server. masterdoc my absolute BELOVED, masterdoc my bethrothed, masterdoc my soul mate. I'd recommend this as a second port of call after the above video as it either contains all details about the puzzles or links to other expanded docs that do.

here's the narrative summary doc that lays out all the plot and lore discovered in three pages of plain prose. if you just want to get to the good bits as fast as you can and get blasted directly in the face by contextless lore bombs, this is the doc for you. if you don't want to start with the video, I'd say this is another good entry point.

once you've got the lay of the land, some of the game materials that I found particularly interesting include:

the in-universe east germany expat usenet forum, with all content translated into english. most of it is irrelevant space filler with occasional extremely sus lore, but I still found it fun to read through. love to soak in some fictional forum drama.

chdb.xlsx, the spreadsheet of the names of all the children the protocol 'verse magnus institute was studying/experimenting on. EDIT: here is a version of the sheet without any annotations and with all of the names in their original order, kudos to @theboombutton for catching that the commonly shared copy had the order swapped around.

klaus.xls, a (very corrupted) spreadsheet with what looks like the classifications of a bunch of old OIAR cases.

Free or Cheap Spanish Learning Resources So You Can Run at Windmills in Fluent Spanish

I will update this list as I learn of any more useful ones. If you want general language learning resources check out this other post. This list is Spanish specific. Find lists for other specific languages here.

For the purposes of this list "free" means something that is either totally free or has a useful free tier. "Cheap" is a subscription under $10USD a month, a software license or lifetime membership purchase under $100USD, or a book under $30USD. If you want to suggest a resource for this list please suggest ones in that price range that are of decent quality and not AI generated.

WEBSITES

Dreaming Spanish - A website that is also a YouTube Channel. This is a comprehensible input site with videos about a variety of subjects with multiple hosts from multiple countries. It has content for learners from absolute beginner to lower advanced. It lets you sort videos by dialect, subject, length, etc. The free version has a lot of content. The paid version is $9 a month and has many more videos and allows you to track your listening hours. The website is in English but all videos are entirely in Spanish.

Lawless Spanish - A free website with resources to learn Spanish relating to grammar, pronunciation, and vocabulary. The website also has worksheets, charts, an AI chatbot, and reviews of different learning resources. The website is in English.

Spanish Boom - A free website with beginner lessons and free readings with audio and visual aids. They're also associated with a service called Esidioma that provides paid courses with tutor help for around $23 and also sells books. Prices are in Euros but they also sell to people outside of Europe. The website is available in multiple languages.

studyspanish.com - A website with free verb drills and grammar lessons. It's commonly used by high school Spanish students. They also have a blog that hasn't updated in a while but there is an archive to read through. They have a paid tier with access to their podcasts, vocab lessons, and their Spanish learning app which is $10 a month or $120 for a lifetime membership. The website is in English.

Speaking Latino - A website marketed at Spanish teachers but it's in English and has guides to colloquial Spanish and slang in a lot of different countries and a free blog with tips on sounding like a local in different countries. It has a paid tier but that's mostly useful for Spanish teachers. They also sell slang dictionaries for various countries that are usually less than $10.

UT Austin Spanish Proficiency Exercises - A bunch of free grammar, vocab, and pronunciation guides for various tasks you should be able to do in Spanish at various levels from one of my alma maters, the University of Texas at Austin. It's got videos of people from different countries pronouncing things. The podcast links often don't work for some reason but the grammar, vocab, and video links should work fine. The website is in English.

SpanishDict - A free dictionary website and app with a search feature that also has curated vocabulary lists on various topics and articles. They have a paid tier at $13 a month with a writing coach and subscriber only curated lists and articles. Personally I don't think their paid tier is all that special but it's up to you. The website is in English.

BBC Bitesize Spanish - Bitesize is a free study resource for kids and is sorted by level. It has articles aimed at little kids as well as secondary school aged teens studying for their exams or planning to study abroad. The website is in English and available worldwide, not just in the UK.

YOUTUBE CHANNELS

Hola Spanish - A channel by a woman named Brenda from Argentina who makes videos about grammar, pronunciation, culture, media, and general Spanish tips for upper beginner to advanced learners. The channel is almost entirely in Spanish with occasional vocabulary words translated into English onscreen. There are subtitles in Spanish onscreen but sometimes they randomly disappear.

Butterfly Spanish - A channel with free lessons from beginner to lower intermediate. The host also makes videos about useful phrases and listening practice videos. The channel is mostly in English.

Spanish After Hours - A comprehensible input channel for beginner to intermediate learners with vlogs, history, Spanish tips, and news. The descriptions and video titles are in English but the videos are all in Spanish. The channel host is from Spain.

Easy Spanish - A channel part of the easy languages network that makes a combination of videos with useful phrases and terms for beginners and interviews on the street with locals. They have teams in both Barcelona and Mexico City and there are dual language subtitles in Spanish and English onscreen. The hosts also have a podcast for intermediate to advanced learners.

My Daily Spanish - A catchall channel that has lessons, discussions of grammar, culture topics, vlogs, vocabulary, and other various things. The host is from Spain and also makes a lot of YouTube shorts. She mostly speaks in Spanish but occasionally uses English or has English translations onscreen.

Spansh Boost with Martin and Spanish Boost with Mila - These channels are run by a couple from Argentina who also work as tutors on italki. They often appear on each other's channels and both have their own podcasts and vlogs and general content videos that they make discussing their lives, giving tips, and discussing culture. Mila also makes a lot of videos playing the sims.

Spanish Boost Gaming - Run by Martin from Spanish Boost, this is a lets play channel in clear and easy to understand Spanish. Subtitles are available in English and Spanish and a few other languages as well and it's an actual let's play channel. He plays a variety of video games, makes jokes, and says cuss words and everything.

Mextalki - A channel run by a couple of guys from Mexico city that has listening practice, podcasts, street interviews, and Mexican Spanish specific lessons. Some videos have dual language subtitles onscreen while others do not. The channel is majority in Spanish but in a few lesson videos or portions of videos they will speak in English a bit.

Espanol Con Juan - A channel that teaches Spanish in Spanish from upper beginner to upper intermediate. Juan has grammar lessons, vocabulary lessons, and videos about culture. He is from Spain and the channel is entirely in Spanish. He also has a podcast for more advanced learners.

READING PRACTICE

Vikidia - A wikipedia type website specifically made for kids. The articles are short and written in more simple easy to understand Spanish. The website is in Spanish and made for native speaker kids.

Spanish graded readers by Olly Richards - Spanish has short stories and dialogues for beginner and intermediate, books in easy Spanish on world war 1, world war 2, western philosophy, and climate change. There's also dialogue books specific to Mexican Spanish and Spanish used on social media. The books usually go from $5-$20 new depending on how old they are and whether or not you bought a digital copy. These are really easy to find at used bookstores for cheap though, especially in the US.

Conatilteg Digital - This is a mobile app that provides digital versions of the free textbooks for children provided by the Mexican Ministry of Education both historic and current. The link I provided is for iOS but the app is also available on android and the app is available in multiple countries and not just Mexico. The app is entirely in Spanish and categorized by grade from preschool to secondary school so it's a resource appropriate for all levels and may be enjoyable for any kids you know that are learning Spanish. You can also view their browser website here. (also entirely in Spanish)

Hola Que Pasa - A free website with news articles for learners from beginner to intermediate difficulty. They also provide audio and have the news articles available in podcast form. Every article has certain phrases highlighted that you can hover over and get and English translation of. The website is in a mix of English and Spanish.

Spanish in Levels - A world news website in Spanish for learners. The articles are separated into three different levels and the website is in a mix of English and Spanish. Each article also has audio.

PODCASTS

Spanish for False Beginners - An unscripted podcast about various topics hosted by a guy from the UK and a guy from Spain. The podcast is aimed at people who find beginner content to be boring but still find intermediate content to be too difficult. English is very rarely used.

Uforia/Univision - Uforia is a free app aimed at native speakers in the US and has Spanish language radio, music, and podcasts. Univision in general is also useful if you like American and international news and programming in Spanish.

Radio National de Espana - Another site for native speakers, this is Spanish National Radio. They have a variety of free podcasts and radio programs.

Spanish Obsessed - This is a series of lessons in podcast form for learners from absolute beginner to advanced.

Storylearning Spanish Podcast - This podcast tells different short stories in Spanish and is aimed at upper beginner to lower intermediate learners.

Radio Ambulante - A Spanish language podcast from NPR that's similar to something like This American Life that tells stories from around Latin America. Although it's aimed at native speakers, the language used is clear and understandable and transcripts are available. They're also aware that a lot of intermediate and advanced learners use them for listening practice and they have developed a free app that helps with comprehension and vocabulary when listening to their podcast.

SELF STUDY TEXTBOOKS

Madrigal's Magic Key to Spanish - A self study textbook written in the late 80s that still mostly holds up for beginner to upper beginner Spanish. A paperback edition of the textbook is about $25 and used copies and ebooks are also usually available wherever you like to buy books. It's also half off on Amazon pretty often.

Complete Spanish step-by-step by Mcgraw Hill - This is a complete version of the McGraw Hill budget option, the spanish step by step series that focuses on the most frequently used words and grammar. It's $25 new but the individual books in the series usually cost less than $10 and used versions and ebooks are available.

Complete Spanish Grammar from Mcgraw Hill - This is a workbook as well as a textbook that usually costs around $20. The complete Spanish all in one version of the book costs about $40. Used versions of these books can be difficult to find because people tend to write all over them but ebook versions are available. You can also find their beginner workbook for around $18.

Practical Spanish Grammar - This book is usually around $25 but because it's not a workbook it's fairly easy to find used copies. An advanced grammar textbook is also available.

SERIES FOR LEARNERS AND KIDS SHOWS

Destinos - This is a series of over 50 episodes of a telenovela made for Spanish learners. The plot revolves around a group of siblings searching around the world for their long lost half sibling they just learned that they had so the series includes a lot of different Spanish dialects.

Extra Spanish - A 13 episode sitcom made to show in Spanish classrooms that revolves around a group of friends in Spain and a student that just moved there.

Dora la Expladora - Yeah if you remember Dora the Explorer from your preschool days it also unsurprisingly exists in Spanish. You can watch clips and some full episodes on YouTube and buy full seasons for around $8 each on Amazon.

PBS Kids in Spanish - A few PBS Kids shows like Cyberchase and Daniel Tiger have been dubbed into Spanish. The link I've given goes to a place to buy them on Amazon Prime but if you go digging on their YouTube channel or the PBS Kids website you also might be able to find them for free. They don't always make it easy to find though.

Plaza Sésamo - The Spanish language localization of Sesame Street for Mexican audiences with its own unique characters. The YouTube channel has a huge amount of content on it and often has episodes streaming live.

As of February 9, 2024, we are updating our Terms of Service to prohibit the following content:

Images created through the use of generative AI programs such as Stable Diffusion, Midjourney, and Dall-E.

This post explains what that means for you. We know it’s impossible to remove all images created by Generative AI on Pillowfort. The goal of this new policy, however, is to send a clear message that we are against the normalization of commercializing and distributing images created by Generative AI. Pillowfort stands in full support of all creatives who make Pillowfort their home. Disclaimer: The following policy was shaped in collaboration with Pillowfort Staff and international university researchers. We are aware that Artificial Intelligence is a rapidly evolving environment. This policy may require revisions in the future to adapt to the changing landscape of Generative AI.

Why is Generative AI Banned on Pillowfort?

Our Terms of Service already prohibits copyright violations, which includes reposting other people’s artwork to Pillowfort without the artist’s permission; and because of how Generative AI draws on a database of images and text that were taken without consent from artists or writers, all Generative AI content can be considered in violation of this rule. We also had an overwhelming response from our user base urging us to take action on prohibiting Generative AI on our platform.

How does Pillowfort define Generative AI?

As of February 9, 2024 we define Generative AI as online tools for producing material based on large data collection that is often gathered without consent or notification from the original creators.

Generative AI tools do not require skill on behalf of the user and effectively replace them in the creative process (ie - little direction or decision making taken directly from the user). Tools that assist creativity don't replace the user. This means the user can still improve their skills and refine over time. 

For example: If you ask a Generative AI tool to add a lighthouse to an image, the image of a lighthouse appears in a completed state. Whereas if you used an assistive drawing tool to add a lighthouse to an image, the user decides the tools used to contribute to the creation process and how to apply them.

*While Adobe software such as Adobe Photoshop is not considered Generative AI, Adobe Firefly is fully integrated in various Adobe software and falls under our definition of Generative AI. The use of Adobe Photoshop is allowed on Pillowfort. The creation of an image in Adobe Photoshop using Adobe Firefly would be prohibited on Pillowfort.

Can I use ethical generators? 

Due to the evolving nature of Generative AI, ethical generators are not an exception.

Can I still talk about AI? 

Yes! Posts, Comments, and User Communities discussing AI are still allowed on Pillowfort.

Yes. We do ask that you properly tag your post as “AI” and “Artificial Intelligence.”

How can I tell if a software I use contains Generative AI?

A general rule of thumb as a first step is you can try testing the software by turning off internet access and seeing if the tool still works. If the software says it needs to be online there’s a chance it’s using Generative AI and needs to be explored further.

Wait wait wait remember that post about how Team Starkid/the Lang brothers are going to be comparable to Shakespeare 500 years from now and it was mostly played for laughs like yeah lol you’ll need a paragraph of footnotes to explain the zefron poster but like

I don’t think that’s actually far off from how Starkid’s place in theatre history might play out and here’s why. Just hear me out

Why is Shakespeare so popular today when he definitely wasn’t the only playwright from that era? When he’s not even the only playwright from that era from England that we have surviving works from?

Two main reasons:

1) Shakespeare’s work is (relatively) universally relatable. The characters do things that are so fundamentally human. They make jokes at their friends’ expense. They complain about being awkward in front of their crush. They have daddy issues. The plot lines of the plays aren’t too complicated. The dick jokes land whether you’re watching in 1611 or 2024, and they probably still will in 2637. Shakespeare’s works are timeless because he didn’t try to outsmart his audience. He wrote about things everyone could relate to rather than trying too hard to peacock his intellect in front of the nobility. This is not true of every playwright.

2) Shakespeare was really popular right around the time England started colonizing everything in sight. Copies of his work got shipped all around the world, translated into dozens of languages, performed probably thousands of times. Setting aside the moral implications of this, the important thing to note is that Shakespeare was about the most easily accessible English playwright during a time of rapid, intense globalization.

Meanwhile, Starkid:

1) Invests hard in meaningful, relatable character arcs instead of spectacle and expensive sets or costumes. Also, lowbrow, immature humor and dick jokes that make A Very Potter Sequel funny and enjoyable regardless of if you’ve ever seen any other Harry Potter media in your life.

2) Posts professional recordings of their musicals to YouTube FOR FREE, making their shows about the easiest, best quality musical theatre you can get pretty much anywhere in the world, regardless of if your area has an active theatre scene. Proshots from other companies are rare and usually not free. Bootlegs are all well and good, but even if the video quality is alright (and that’s a big if) the audio is usually garbage. Starkid has been posting the best quality free recordings they can afford since 2009, shortly after the birth of social media, another time of rapid, intense globalization.

In short, I’m not saying that theatre historians in 500 years won’t remember any our current Broadway faves, but I am saying that in my opinion, Team Starkid is probably going to be more accessible for the general public. If you’re a 26th century English teacher trying to teach your class about narrative structure in 21st century theatre, what are you going to show your students? A bootleg of Hadestown with blurry video and garbage audio? Or the professional recording of Twisted, parts of which they will probably even enjoy, because even long after no one remembers Disney’s Aladdin anymore, your class of 26th century 16-year-olds are still going to laugh at “No One Remembers Achmed.”

Okay now we're REALLY getting into Incredibly Niche Hyperfixation Detail Headcanons.

I'm gonna talk about Aku's name now ok. You're gonna learn more than you ever wanted to know about how the word "aku" is pronounced and spelled in Japanese. Come with me on this journey through an essay with the most unbalanced word-count-to-actual-importance ratio of any essay you'll read this year.

First: syllable stress! In English language, you give one syllable more emphasis by pronouncing it a little harder, louder, longer, and/or higher. Ex: "emphasis" is pronounced EM-pha-sis.

Japanese also has syllable stress, but stress is conveyed only through high/low pitch, which is called a pitch accent. So emphasis would be pronounced ᵉ���-pha-sis.

I figure most of the fandom already knows Aku's name is just the Japanese word for "evil", right? 悪 = あく = Aku.

In the show, the emphasis on Aku's name is clearly placed on the second syllable, ah-KOO. Aku says it that way in the intro, on the phone (obligatory EXTRA THICC) and talking to the gangsters; Jack, the high priestess, the scientist, the gangsters, and Scaramouche pronounce it that way... Interestingly, the emperor is a rare exception who pronounces it two ways ("a-KU" but then "A-ku has returned")—but pronunciation is usually pretty consistent.

However, that's not the way 悪 is pronounced. In Japanese the pitch accent's emphasis is on the first syllable, ᵃ-ku.

You could just chalk it up to "well, it's an American cartoon, obviously they just changed the pronunciation to something they thought sounds more natural in English"

except, the Japanese dub pronounces Aku's name the same way—and in a single sentence you can contrast that against "aku" pronounced the right way.

Long ago in a faraway land, I, Aku, the shape-shifting embodiment of evil, was resurrected as a terrifying demon king.

So what gives?

Now, "Aku" not spelled 悪 is actually used as a Japanese name. And I was only able to find audio recordings pronouncing the name of one person with the name Aku, Aku Yuu 阿久悠, but it was indeed pronounced a-ᵏᵘ.

(I don't wanna link videos for a Japanese lyricist with only a few hundred views on my nerdy fandom post that has nothing to do with the lyricist himself, so if you really wanna hear how his name is pronounced search 阿久悠 on youtube and click a few shorts and squint your ears to pick his name out from the rest of the speech.)

Spelling variations I've found on more than one site that looks halfway reputable include 阿久 (that one's legit, that's the lyricist's family name), 安久, 渥, 亜久, 吾久 and spellings I've only seen on one site so they're more dubious are 圧, 顎, 安駆, 愛玖, 愛紅—so like, there's a handful of actively used spellings. Doesn't seem to be a super popular name but there are indeed people somewhere out there in Japan who have been named Aku, as a first or last name, with some of the spellings seen above.

So obviously Mr. Shogun-Of-Sorrow Master-Of-Darkness named himself "Evil"; but like, evil-pronounced-like-a-name. Like how Cruella's last name is pronounced de-VIL instead of DE-vil but we know what it is.

Was this the show's artistic intent? I don't know. Am I having fun overanalyzing it anyway? Yes.

Since I'm assuming that in-universe most of the characters are speaking Japanese and we're just magically hearing an English translation, presumably by changing the pronunciation Aku can make it clear when he's talking about himself (like if he says "Aku will reign over this world!" there's a subtle distinction between "I will reign over this world" vs "evil (in general) will reign over this world").

And also, by pronouncing his name Like A Name he's emphasizing that He's A Person, and not just, like, the abstract concept of evil given anthropomorphic form. Like yes sure fine ok he is literally the embodiment of evil, but he's not some kind of walking symbolic metaphor for evilness, he's also a whole-ass guy. Who happens to be made out of evil. Considering that he names himself Aku moments after being born and thanking the emperor for "freeing" him, I imagine that emphasizing the thing that's new and different about him—his personhood—is a high priority.

(It also gives an in-universe explanation for why the emperor pronounces it both ways: he's straddling the line between referring to "this dude named Aku" and "the concept of evil itself." I kinda feel like the emperor isn't fully convinced that Aku's a person, given that he was first acquainted with Aku as a puddle of hungry goo and he has no qualms about telling him he wanted to kill him when Aku's a mere—I counted—one minute and thirty seconds old.

Was this the artistic intent behind that voice acting decision? Probably not. But I like it.)

"Hey why did you go through all this insanely nerdy effort to figure out why Aku's name is pronounced the way it is?" Because I have an even deeper insanely nerdy goal: I want a headcanon for how he spells his name.

In Japanese sources on Samurai Jack, Aku's name is spelled アク. That's "Aku" in katakana, the character set used for things like transcribing foreign loan words and onomatopoeia—so it's suggesting that within the framework of the Japanese dub Aku's name is being treated like a foreign word/name.

However: this sometimes just kind of happens in anime/manga to make characters seem Slightly Not-From-Here And Therefore More Interesting. It sometimes happens if a series has characters with fully & obviously Japanese names but the story's not set in Japan (like, it's an alien planet or something). And in the dub, "Samurai Jack" is spelled サムライジャック (also katakana) even though "samurai" is literally just the word samurai being used with the same definition it has in Japan.

So I'm making the executive decision to discard the katakana spelling アク as simply a stylistic decision for the dub and not an actual literal indication of, like, how Aku would sign his name on an official document.

From here we're drifting from "rigorously-researched reasonable conclusions" and into "rigorously-researched subjective personal taste" so this is like, what I vibe with, you don't have to embrace my kanji choices.

Okay so the first thing to know about Japanese name spellings is that they're sort of vibes-based. There are common spellings for common names, but there are also the "his name is 'rainbow' spelled Reign-Beaux" parents who just pick out a couple kanji they like with the right pronunciation and stick them together. One name pronunciation might have several common spellings, one name spelling might have several common pronunciations, there are some kanji that have a common pronunciation used only in names and the kanji is never pronounced that way when it's not used as a name. Sometimes the kanji used in a name will have a specific meaning, and the pronunciation of that name will have a completely different meaning, because the concepts in the two meanings are tangentially related to each other.

Bottom line is, as long as there's some sort of logic to it—in how the kanji sounds, or a pun on the meaning, or something—you can do just about whatever with the spelling.

Okay so let's look at the word aku. Look at it:

悪

The kanji is made of two other kanji stacked on top of each other:

亜 心

亜 means "second-rate, inferior" and 心 means "mind, heart, spirit." (In the original Chinese character, the 亜 helped indicate how the word is pronounced and the 心 helped indicate the word's subject matter, so don't read too deep into the definition of 亜.) but anyway

it turns out, both 亜 and 心 are used in Japanese names!

When used in names, the character 亜 is usually pronounced "a". Promising!

The character 心 is not pronounced "ku".

However! The combination 亜心 has been used as a name a couple of times—pronounced "Tsugumi" and "Ako." So like, it's a rare but known name spelling. (and "Ako" is so close.)

And, just, straight up inventing pronunciations to go with the kanji you chose is legal with names. Especially if it's punny. I think "stretching one kanji out into its two base kanji to turn it into a name" ought to count as punny, I've seen Japanese puns constructed by squishing separate kanji into one kanji.

And at any rate, I think the guy whose name is literally evil-but-pronounced-wrong is probably enough of a dick to write his name as evil-but-spelled-wrong—literally just, take the character 悪 and stretch it out so it's twice as tall—and go "okay you all just have to remember how to spell my name. Deal with it."

So there's my headcanon. In the hypothetical not-magically-translated version of Samurai Jack that exists in my head, Aku spells his name—lemme see if I can trick tumblr into letting me stack the characters on top of each other without making them separate paragraphs:

亜 心

Close enough!

The overlap between "people who might conceivably someday run into Aku" and "people who don't learn how to spell their dictator's name at like age 5" is probably very very small.

But Jack's probably one of them. He was sent away from his home before Aku would have even had an opportunity to decide how to spell his own name and there weren't exactly a lot of reading materials laying around when he got back 17 years later.

So at some point Jack catches sight of Aku's name written down somewhere and squints at it and goes wait hold on all this time have I been hearing his name wrong. Is it actually A-ko. Isn't Ako a girl's name.

Or else for some reason Aku has to, like, send him a letter or something with no context (extremely important death threats maybe?) and there's no other indication of who it's from except the signature so Jack's staring at it like who the fuck is Tsugumi and why does she hate me.

"Okay now that you've come up with this big elaborate incredibly detailed headcanon for why Aku pronounces his name the way he does and how he spells it, what are you planning to use it for?" Nothing, actually. I just wanted to have a headcanon.

"So why did you spend your whole evening researching and writing this?" i d. i don't know.

Unfortunately Ladd Ehlinger is a virulently racist and misogynistic conservative who thinks feeding school kids is the same thing as slavery. His film is filled with almost constant flashing lights and spinning cameras that cause headaches, motion sickness, migraines, and seizures.

Here is a link to timestamps for these if you still choose to watch it.

The film ignores all of the politics from the original novel because the creator of the film agrees with the bigotry the novel condemned. You are much better off watching another visual adaption or reading the original or translated book.

In a better world, Princess tutu would’ve been a perfect show for an extended universe with spin off media. I like the throughline of the arts being integral to the plot, but ballet might be hard to translate into other mediums, so I propose princess tutu spin-off media each choose a medium specific theme to tie together each work.

I’m talking an audio drama/radio play where instead of deranged bisexual ballerinas we have bonkers lesbian band kids with the plot centering around music.

Or my personal favorite idea, a manga spin-off series where when Story events occur the art style shifts to resemble illustrations in old fairytale books

My relief turned to panic and fear once I realized what was happening. Chewing on my lip, I watched the bots move around, closing any escape route. High tech guns pointed at me. Oh I was so fucked.

One of them barked, it's finger toying with the trigger ready to blast at a moments notice. A few of the other bots were still locked on, they was no escape. Im surrounded. I hoped they be friendly like it had been a bit since I saw people.

I moved the controls to raise the hands of my suit. I don't know how they were able to project their voices outside the inner cockpit. Maybe just a newer model? Lifting the hands in a show of no weapons, and hopefully, they would take it as an action of peace.

None of my scanners were able to discern what make or model these ones are. That should have been my first sign to something wrong but no i just had to get overly excited and jump headfirst into danger.

They shifted clearly unsure of what to do.

Finally, the one in the front, likely the leader, is the lower its gun slowly.

The sounds- i assumed it was talking- warbled again trying to threaten or learn something about me. Who knows at some point, slowly I lower my arms again shifting to see all the various robots around me.

Im going to guess it wasn't all that human. Good news nasa there are aliens. And they are probably more advanced than we are.

When they decided that I wasn't hostile, they shuffled me around, keeping myself in between various mechs to avoid me escaping, which honestly sounds great too bad. I'm a hostage how fun.

When we reach a med bay like unit im motioned in the room as the leader bots warbles to the medical bots? Red and white usually means hospitals maybe it was a universal thing.

Look about I find it's pretty standard space station like medical wing with various beds and a handful of doctors.

It's warbling at me. Then a pop up for a file appears. I probably shouldn't click it but no risk no reward.

Clicking the file i received, a pop up for language check. It'd be helpful if I could read any of it.

A new pop up appeared as the medic bot asked some questions.

I guess im getting a check up?

"Can you hear me? I believe his audio processors are broken as well as his voice box."

The bot turned to grab what looks to be a mixture of a stud finder and a thermometer gun thing. It scans me tensing up i worry what they do if they find out im not one of them.

"The spanner isn't working on them. It's glitching. Piece of scrap."

"He looks like he's been thrashed about quite a bit."

"The voice box is normal for decepticons to rip out but audial processors? Something fishy is going on."

"Still no em field reading."

"Is it a walking corpse?"

"Why or how would it be walking?"

"Nothing about this bot makes sense"

"I say shoot it. It's a dangerous unknown."

"But think of the miracle this bot is! I want to see what its insides look like!"

"And that's why your not touching him."

The back and forth between the various robots was hard to follow but it was nice to know my translation files still worked!

Honestly I have no idea where I was going with that. Lol

Whole concept is the bots (I imagine autobots just cause they're supposed to be good guys so I don't think they'd murder reader right away), come across a human in a mech suit but don't know!

Reason for the voice box being broken is cause I can't remember if traditionally mecha suit have a speaker i know of the inner comm system but not a speaker. I imagine thay they would probably try to install one and it fail cause their suit and Cybertronians have completely different anatomy. So I imagine reading using gestures and sign language later.

Also the scanners not working is purely cause I think humans would but in a electronic disruptor to protect the pilot from being forcibly locked in the suit or so no one can hijack it.

putting it into an ask because I don't want to derail your post sorry

As someone who's culture lost their last L1 Speaker around the time they were born. This!! So much this!!

It is EXTREMELY difficult to learn endangered languages, and from experience the people who do know how to speak some of it are extremely protective of it even to others from that same culture! (something that makes me even more attached to the dalish as a peoples sigh)

I would die for the chance to speak my tribes original language but even if I could jump through the hoops to do it, a decade is decisively not. enough. time. to do so. Yet alone to adopt the native cadence of the language. Again even if I wanted too! Which I desperately desperately do!

Lavellan would have to jump through so many hoops that by the time she might be ready to start speaking it regularly (in the context of ancient elvhen) that Veilguard would probably be on the horizon already. That's also given the idea that there are even universities willing to put aside discriminatory behavior twords the elves to provide classes on such specific subjects. AND putting aside the whole 'wow that's straight up the herald of andraste in my Sociolinguistics class' with the problems that would cause.

I mean, I know its a fantasy universe and I'm really projecting on it here but like hear me out- I have a dictionary and a book of stories translated by scholars I will never meet, and a series of audio-files that I myself had to copy convert to a format I could have on my phone and listen to. I'm untrained and uneducated on how to go about it sure but even with my available tools it feels like an uphill battle with every new word I pick out to practice. I sing songs from that book fully knowing Im butchering it the whole time, and try my best to feel connected to something i know I cannot fully understand. And that's beautiful! That;s fantastic! There's something to truly love there! And veilguard doesn't even let us try to explore that idea!

The fact that we don't get to choose whether or not we drank from the well makes this so extremely frustrating. The game gives both the Inquisitor and Moriggan the benefits of the well without ever allowing our input. Because to me the only way that Lavellan could become even partially fluent in ancient elvhen would be if she drank from the well. But then Moriggan is also allowed all types of unlocked knowledge from her deus-ex-inner-mythal shes suddenly alright with having been provided from her mother despite her horror in DAI.

It takes away a huge part of what I think Solas really liked about a romanced Inky, as she was always so curious and open to learning new things about the past- Even when they would clash on certain subjects. It takes away this really lovely concept that even if they are going into the torment nexus together that he could at least be teaching her the language in there on top of it all. He would love her broken annunciations and he awkward cadence, and respond in kind ;w;

I'm super biased about the torment nexus ending because I love the mythological tragedy of it but there should have been so many more choices ugghh. While I would still choose this ending regardless I think the idea that the inquisitor should have been able to have at least an on screen spat between her and Solas, There is absolutely good reason for it all considering.

She should have had moments where she slips in and out of what she had learned from the ancient dialect, Where she goes from in canter to out because of how passionate she might be in that moment. Going from trade to elvhen and back. It would be glaringly obvious that she practiced what she did want to say to him in the final battle and he would be able to tell. It would mean so much more to him than her just magically understanding it all at once.

At least give me some kind of 'a romanced inquisitor convened with spirits to learn' kind of explanation if you're going to magic it into her knowledge I mean please!

Anyway sorry for the ramble, I wouldn't have the confidence to share this if it wasn't for your posts so thanks for all of your lore-dives and analysis posts I do genuinely enjoy all of them.

yeah!! i very much agree. i'm very mildly bilingual (not good at it ahaha) and like... that language is not endangered in the least, half my family still speaks it, and it's still just hard to re-learn on a basic level! and to me there's always that degree of self consciousness and feeling a bit bad about not knowing, when it's a language i feel like i "should" know, as opposed to a fully second language that i'm just learning from scratch. and personally i get stressed and actively worse at it when people expect me to be fluent and get disappointed when i'm not. the social pressure alone removes some linguistic ability, haha.

so i found it sad that lavellan - regardless of the well - gets pushed into suddenly being 100% fluent. she can still be dalish and not good at it! or just not the type of person who'd think to speak in it in front of random people (everyone else standing there fdhjdgd). i thought of my inquisitor as a city elf who was adopted into the clan as a child, and tried REALLY hard to learn elvhen afterwards bc she wanted to fit in. but it's not "natural" to her to slip into it for longer or more complex ideas. and arguably if a lavellan got "woe, fluency be upon ye" from the well, they might actually be LESS likely to use it in speaking, bc it is also a bit of a mind control symptom at that point...

and imo it's actually really sweet that solas falls in love with someone who - at least in dai - is really different from him! on top of being a cringe fail mortal from the world he initially hated, and from a culture that doesn't like him, lavellan does not have to be very in tune with the language or culture as he knows it. he goes for their ~rare and marvelous spirit~ rather than anything else, and is happy to share with them, but it's never like a mandatory thing.

and this is exactly it!! i think that experience of slowly picking up things and figuring out how much you can learn is really important, and they just skipped over that entirely to "lavellan is now suddenly fluent in elvhen. yay!" which kind of elides how much work that is, how or why they would've done that, whether they would've wanted to...

like that's a whole character arc that seemingly just gets skipped offscreen and made mandatory! and it's not bc the writers are saying anything really deep and meaningful about cultural reconnection, but bc i think they were likely not ever in the position of having to think about those types of decisions themselves, and uncharitably, were like "ok. solas is super elfy, right. so to make it more romantic, make lavellan super elfy as well! yay! Problem Solved :)" when that was never a problem. ;-;
