sorry #posting again but it's been on my mind cuz i once again saw a post and i just. really really hate the way this bit is so often taken out of context to make her out to be dismissing and belittling him just cuz she felt like it, because a lot of the story does hinge on the fact that this was in fact a reasonable worry

heathcliff of course has reasons to take it personally, but the context of the entire canto tells you why this was a problem to begin with. we also see it during the rest of the game, cuz he mellows out as the cantos go, but we can't forget at the start he was out there killing his coworkers. then in canto vi we get more about it. nelly starts here jokingly:

but by the end she's very serious about it:

the cycles of abuse is ofc one of the main themes in the canto, like in the book where heathcliff assumes for the second generation the role of their own hindley; in game he's growing both in the shadows of hindley and of his other mirror selves. but it can't really be ignored that the problem WAS there and he was shaping up to be just like them (a person used to violence to the point even someone as close to him as the woman who raised him had reason to believe he might hurt her!) and that catherine is discussing it in the hopes of figuring out a way to give him a place to heal and grow out of that absolute hell that was growing up in the heights. it just feels really weird to always discuss that part as if catherine was being cruel for no reason, when heathcliff himself admits that he left because he feared he'd murder her

instead by the time of the canto, while hindley, linton and nelly all comment on him not having changed, he continously chooses to be the better man, avoiding unnecessary fighting, lending a hand to people in danger, and ofc standing strong against the erlking's provocations and attempt to turn our heathcliff into another just like him, to continue the same cycle.

BUT it's important that back then he was a person who wouldn't have done that, a person who would have hurt his loved ones, and that what he had in mind was taking revenge on them- because he grew past that in the course of the story, then that character development is much more meaningful. and that's also why it's so important to all the people around him, who had seen him start to go down that same path as hindley, to become the worst version of himself--

because in the end he didn't become like that! he did change and become that better person, and they noticed!

some of my fave pieces of Great Dog Advice I’ve seen people give include:

-You do not need to impose exercise restrictions on an injured or post-surgical dog, because dogs will never over-exert themselves.

-only deworm your dog on a full moon.

-dogs will only eat food that is good for them; they naturally know to avoid toxins

-dogs should be allowed to breed freely because they will only mate with the most fit partners.

-some dogs simply should never have their hair groomed or cut because it will make them feel bad about how they look.

God forbid you ever criticize the lack of consequences Bakugou experiences in MHA, or suddenly you’ll find dozens of Bakugou stans pouring into your mentions to make a speech about how cruel you are for forcing him to eat cement. They’ll act as though “consequences” inherently involves throwing him into the dungeon or putting him in detention for 100 years and then moan about how him facing consequences would only perpetuate a cycle of abuse/discrimination.

Listen, it’s not really that much of a consequence if the “consequence” in question isn’t directly connected to his current or past bad behaviour. “Oh but his scars!” “When he died that one time!” “His guilt for getting kidnapped” None of those are related to his bullying, and in my opinion, that makes them insufficient as consequences in an arc about changing for the better.

The consequences I would actually like to see could be as simple as: Izuku feels sad/mad because of what he went through, or certain characters reflect on how Bakugou’s past impacts their perception of him. More introspection on the victim’s end is needed, Bakugou doesn’t necessarily need to be pilloried for the arc to be satisfying.

It's interesting that KCD1 had such an American alt-right following because on the face of it I can see how if you bought into a narrative of your own singular historical importance KCD1 would support that thinking. You're in 1400s Bohemia, a lot of "strong" Christian white men duking it out. A lot of traditional gender roles, nationalism, and authoritarianism. The presence of the Holy Roman Church in basically everything. The antisemitism of Europe setting the stage for what would happen in the 20th Century (even though that particular story is absent so far).

But I've also seen enough to know how it all fell apart for them because the writing is more concerned with telling a Czech historical story their way and the alt-right intellectual framework is fundamentally ahistorical and radicalized. They're loud in saying that KCD2 is 'woke nonsense' but in reality I don't get the feeling the developers care one way or another. They are just telling a more diverse story because history is more diverse than these people believe and the characters in 2 left the bubble they were in.

Me: I wonder what Hook calls Sampo in the Japanese dub? Probably oji-san, since it's shushu in the original Chinese?

Hook: Sampo-ojichan!!

Oji is "uncle," which is hilarious because Hook calls Natasha by "older sister" when she wants something. So Hook either just really wants to get on Natasha's good side, or she takes Sampo at face value when he refers to himself as an old man. She trusts him a lot and takes him at his word and she calls him as such!

And Sampo calls Hook either ojou-san or oujo-san (I can't find the Japanese sub to see the spelling, and I can't tell them apart by ear)!

One spelling, oujo, means "princess," it's how you would refer to royalty. The other, ojou, (which I assume is what he's actually saying) is something you call the young lady of a high-class family with a high social standing. In Genshin Impact, the intro scene for a popular ship, chilumi, shows Childe calling Lumine ojou-chan, which the English dub translated as "girlie." Since Sampo uses -san instead of -chan, his is more formal and respectful, it's more like "young lady."

...It's also how you would refer to the daughter of a yakuza leader, which I love, since Hook leads her own little gang (the Moles) skzhkskdkd

But it really gets me in the heart, because! Hook is generally looked at as a delinquent by most adults. Which I mean. Not without good reason, she

calls Natasha an old witch

frequently sneaks out into the Fragmentum

has left graffiti all over the side of the orphanage

was constantly picking fights with other kids

beat a man unconscious for stealing from her dad

and has already picked up on how business gets done in the Underworld, and uses/actively participates in it to get what she wants- she basically acts an information broker

like Hook earns her reputation haha. The Underground is lucky that what Hook wants is just like. Candy and toys and to play hide-and-seek. I'm sure she'll have the capability to raise all kinds of hell and be more like an actual gang leader when she's older, even if she chooses not to act on it.

So Sampo calling her so politely and respectfully is really sweet and cute! Yes, he's polite and respectful with everyone, but that's just it- he treats Hook much like he does everyone else. He doesn't tell her to buzz off because she's a kid. He doesn't lie or try to cheat her or assume she's naive because of her age. He never talks down to her. He really does just treat her like a respected business partner and he takes her seriously, which Hook really seems to appreciate. And even when Sampo does treat her like a kid, it's not in a negative way; he guides her on little adventures and chats with her and takes her for joy rides on his moped. All of which Hook also really appreciates, since everyone else is too busy trying to get by to make time to play with her. She absolutely adores him.

I hope they officially join forces someday and terrorize all of Belobog with their shenanigans JSKJZNDKSJ

So Hook calls Sampo "Uncle Sampo" in a particularly affectionate/endeared tone, and Sampo calls Hook "Young Miss Hook" in a very respectful tone! And to reiterate:

2024 art summary!

Thanks to everyone who's supported my art over the past year! It's been a year full of a lot (a lot) of personal development/discovery and art has been a huge outlet in expressing that for me, so I'm glad that people have been receptive to it :)

2025 will have more art. there will be more. more. more

So I just finished reading all of The Warm Embrace of a Shadow (well caught up) and uh yeah I’m totally obsessed!

Adrien is so deeply messed up in a very compelling way (which makes sense considering the general set up for his character), and his and Claudia’s relationship is SO fun to read I’m so obsessed. The brain worms are setting in as we speak-

But I also wanted to ask, because of how the narrative is used in the story (as a deliberate thing the characters have to escape if they choose to) feels…so Revolutionary Girl Utena coded I need to know if that’s on purpose it’s been circling my mind since I finished it. If not, I’d love to hear your thoughts/insights on how you use the narrative for the story! Also sorry if the ask is too long-

Don't worry, I've gotten much longer asks and will probably continue to get longer ones, haha!

Unfortunately, I have only experienced Utena second-hand so far, so I can't say that any of the parallels have been fully intentional. Both are postmodernist (if, uh, I'm allowed to call a fanfic that), both heavily rely on deconstruction (with Utena, it's fairy tales, and with TWEoS it is the lovesquare, miraculous canon, and fandom tendencies), and both deal with meta-commentary and meta-narrative!

As I've said in previous asks, The Narrative is Canon is God is Tikki is Thomas Astruc. It's a technique I think is inherently unique to fanfic and especially canon-divergent fics to be able to write out a story that is in conversation to and constantly reliant on the larger "correct" story of canon. Claudia is treated the way she is so often by other canon characters not just because of her class and race, but because she is also an ascended extra within the 'meta' of canon (but, like, it is also very much the former two, don't get me wrong). Adrien and Marinette are soulmates because in the 'meta' of canon, they are endgame, and isn't that basically the same thing? So on and so forth. TWEoS is a very deliberate and self-acknowledged "Timeline Where It All Goes Wrong", and part of that is constantly reminding us that it wasn't supposed to end up like that.

Of course, due to the above, the fact that The Narrative of ML canon is everyone's intended destiny, and that it's a destiny Adrien is unhappy with, the only option is to acknowledge (through fanfic) there are other choices. That you could have everything laid out for you perfectly, and that you can refuse, and that might be how you find yourself. And, of course, the process of finding yourself and asserting your own personhood and agency is going to be rough, and if you've been in survival mode for your entire life, finally exiting it is going to make you a whole lot worse before you get a whole lot better, but it's worth it. You do not have to treat your acceptance as a given.
