I tend to see Admiral Spire's humility and lack of interest in politicking or furthering his own name as a sign that he was not a high noble on his homeworld

A fun story.... Even if the ending is not canon.
Actually... I am not sure how much of this games story would fit in canon, but I like the voice acting.

All the video games Jack played in 2023, reviewed.
Since it's a tradition of mine and I like seeing how far I've come vis-a-vis video games, here's another quick-fire round of every game I played this year.
Deathloop
Arkane's actionized spin off to Dishonored is a fine game in its own right, but after years of experimentation and refinement in their field many ImSim heads such as myself expected something more grander and complex, when Deathloop was in many ways the opposite of that.
Hitman 3
Agent 47's swan song goes to the series greatest heights possible, but the formula starts to bristle at the edges a little. About the right time to conclude the series I think. Freelance mode can go fuck itself.
Bioshock 2 and Minerva's Den
Definitely a strange beast. An attempt to simultaneously capture what made the original so iconic while also trying to put a completely different spin on it. I'm not sure it really works, but it's interesting to compare the two. The DLC on the other hand, manages to use it's limited scale to much better effect.
Alien Isolation
Finally finished this masterpiece of the franchise. The plot sort of goes nowhere in it's back second half and the DLC is for completists only. Still, the vibes and visuals look as good today as they did ten years ago.
Battlefleet Gothic Armada 2
A well designed and fun space strategy game that really gets the 40k vibe, but even so the campaign feels just a little too long to warrant multiple playthroughs. After finishing the Imperial campaign I'm in no hurry to go through the whole thing again with the other factions.
Aliens Dark Descent
After Isolation it was such a surprise to see another Alien game that just 'gets it.' While there are certain creative decisions I didn't jive with, the overall experience is a tense and genuine horror romp.
System Shock
That Nightdive managed to preserve the overall experience of the original, and also update it to modern sensibilities is nothing short of a miracle. I have some minor criticisms about the music and the ending, but otherwise an uncompromised update of a trendsetting classic.
Return of the Obra Dinn
One of those games that really tries to tell a story that only video games can. Glad I went into it blind, and I'd love to see it inspire more experimental mystery solving games.
Divinity Original Sin 2
I don't see the masterpiece in this that some do, but an impressive effort nonetheless. Too long and too sprawling, but expertly designed and deftly told.
Zeno Clash and Zeno Clash 2
I love these stupid weird games even if I still can't tell if I was playing it properly or just flailing about. They deserve far more recognition than they got.
The Walking Dead: Michonne, A New Frontier, The Final Season
As ever you can understand that Telltale put a lot of heart into their games, but ultimately they still collapse under the weight of the source materials tropes and conventions. A noble effort, but not without an eye-roll or two.
Neverwinter Nights
So far I've played just the base campaign and I can do nothing but call it a slog. Beyond a few interesting ideas here and there it's a distillation of all the worst parts of the Infinity Engine era with no improvements of it's own. No charm, no atmosphere, no character, physically and literally.
Alright then folks. That's about it. Let's see what the video games of 2024 bring.

Bloodborne characters and what types of video games I think they would play:
Gascoigne: Isn't very much into video games, finds them to be a waste of time. His kids love playing them though, so he feigns interest because he doesn't want to disappoint them. That doesn't mean that he isn't confused as to why a franchise with murderous animatronics is so popular with children however.
Eileen: Is very much into action-RPGs, but mainly focuses on PVP. Almost always uses a glass cannon-type build, and is scarily good at what she does. Is generally a good sport however, and doesn't take it too seriously. Has a fondness for teaching new players the ropes.
Gehrman: Occasionally seems to forget that video games that originated from after the 80s exist. Some people claim he has a Steam account with several games in his library (all of which are hidden) but nobody knows for certain.
Plain Doll: Can sometimes be found in the Hunter's Dream playing Bloodborne on an old PS4. Don't think too hard about it. The last guy who did is now in a mental hospital. The Dream's internet had to be cut because she kept uploading recordings of Bloodborne speedruns to YouTube, which caused massive outbreaks of nihilistic insanity.
Alfred: Is a huge 40k nerd in general, and has a particular preference for the Dawn of War and Battlefleet Gothic: Armada series. He refuses to play any factions not aligned with the Imperium however, so he's missing out on a lot.
Valtr: Likes boomer shooters such as Doom, Wolfenstein and Duke Nukem, as well as other games like Mortal Kombat and Hotline Miami. Basically, if it involves a ridiculous amount of violence, he's probably already 100% completed it.
Micolash: Plays Psychonauts. That's it. He'll lock himself in his study and just play Psychonauts repeatedly for days on end until he passes out from exhaustion. He never plays anything else. Everyone around him has collectively agreed not to tell him there's a sequel. They're too afraid of the potential consequences.
Simon: Is a bit of a casual JRPG nerd, for reasons nobody can exactly explain. Final Fantasy X, Final Fantasy Tactics, and the earlier Shin Megami Tensei games are some of his favorites and he will eagerly explain their plotlines and themes to anyone in his general vicinity.
Ludwig: Mainly plays competitive FPS games such as Call of Duty and Battlefield. He's absolutely terrible at them and has an abysmal K/D ratio, but he's having fun and that's what matters. Also has a decently-sized Twitch channel, but is often the subject of jokes comparing him to another, more popular Ludwig.
Maria: Is a big fan of Fallout: New Vegas and is constantly discussing it on various Discord servers and internet forums. Tends to gloss over the more unfortunate aspects of the NCR. She has been trying to get into Animal Crossing as well but her progress has been limited by her reluctance to make use of the fishing mechanic.
Laurence: Especially fond of Paradox Interactive games, and has the formula and strategies down to a science. Usually ends up creating viciously militaristic theocracies. Is also rather partial to Spore, and will spend hours creating and customizing the most horrific, bizarre creatures you will ever see in your life.

Dougal and Admiral Spire are fundamentally similar people with extremely similar personalities. they are pale men with short dark hair, a triangular hairline, and narrow eyes, as well as fairly defined, angular faces. they are extremely level-headed and even-keeled, concerned with practicality rather than mysticism or politics, humble but confident and self-assured commanders who care about their underlings [though not in a distant, unsentimental way] and treat them respectfully. they take pride in their profession but do not harbor lofty ambitions or seek out fame, and have gained their reputation in large part from fighting in a well-known war [War of the Gray Alliance/Fifth Eclipse, and 12th Black Crusade respectively]. both have also allied with, or helped out, elves, and later parted ways amiably.

Warhammer 40K BattleFleet Gothic: Armada 2 - Space Battles - SPACE WAR! ... You can't really see it, but you can see the aftermath, and you can see. a little bit of sparks. It's an invisible beam, and it comes from the bow of the stone ship. And you're experiencing some technical difficulties. in the ocean. And our son was saying that it's in the middle areas, and that's not true. It is in the ocean where you would experience these problems. in the ocean is probably 20 miles deep It's very deep. Some places it's 80 to 100 miles. No, it's it's a lot deeper than that. It goes. down to a few thousand miles. No, it is about seven or 800 miles. Really. It is very deep And you're fooling around with crabs. You don't know where any of them are, mostly they don't go that deep, but they are in about four or 500 foot of water And there's ten times as many 60s. And we're gonna have them destroy your ships. until you shut your mouth. But yeah, those emitters are functional.
Thor Freya
---you can see the front.  and are ornate nd the ghwb design.  and if you find out what is below in huge holes in the pacific and ohter you will be astounded.  some scan and look and i hear may find things shapes but not realy clear at ll they look like roots.  where they are is very deep the shallowest poiont is about four hundred miles well ok ten miles.  and you have not seen themnor looked.  we blame clones and macs.  the emitters are active the oceans ours we fry seafood if need be.  but reallly shall attack and have kaiju eat them as we do. yes htey sy we do that.  the engines, one is hte gulf the other is south of the islands and a bit west.  the second circle.  the nozzle.  below a cavern,

so what is in it. you saw it think it is ur and it is  mined out though yup ok not yet tons of it remains.  and john r knows seeks it and tries to rig it and several others like it.  we need the ur out of course.  but  it is not presnet in the ocean. as it is an emitter. he is fascinated no wnts to use it and to blow it.  and is at it all the time and fills tons of peoples cup with other stuff.

What game are Amarkun and Zaa from :3?
They are from Battlefleet Gothic: Armada II, which is currently on sale on steam at 3.99! It is a very fun game, but I am terrible at anything war related, and so I am still stuck at the Trazyn's early mission on easy.
Those two have so much sass together. You will suddenly find yourself laughing so hard it might hurt.
I don't want to spoil anything, but it is such a great game ! The Inertialess drivers on the necron ships will make you think you are a commander, (although just ramming someone with the Imperial ships is ( ੭ ˘ ³˘)੭‎°。⋆♡‧₊˚ the BEST). All you need to do on necrons is to ILD your ships into the middle of the enemies, and release all your scarabs, all while your small ships just go *phew phew* from the other side of the map, but maybe you might not want to listen to me, I somehow lost with Settra on easy mode in TWWH III
