As for the jealousy question:

Kieran: pre-feelings, they won't really be very jealous and would probably only intervene bc they feel that someone flirting with their betrothed is going to be a bad look for them, you, and the noble. Post-feelings, they would start getting jealous but would have a hard time recognizing it as jealousy bc it is not a feeling they are familiar with. They'd probs spend a while just watching you from across the room with a troubled look and then find some excuse--if only to convince themselves they are doing this for a good reason--to cut in and dance with MC instead. They'd be in denial over feeling jealous.

Aurynn: pre-feelings, not going to care much so long as MC doesn't look uncomfortable. If MC does look uncomfortable or like they are so incredibly bored out of their skull, he'd step in but otherwise he is fine with letting MC handle it or if mc is flirting with others if they want to. He's a slut. He gets it. And he knows if MC really wants out of it they can just signal him with a look and he’ll come to the rescue but not without badgering the hell out of the noble first, if only just for the fun of it. Post-feelings, he's going to be struggling with why the hell he cares so much about seeing someone else rizzing mc up and might start getting petty about it. He wouldn't even care about rudely cutting in if it means he gets to monopolize your time and would probs overcompensate by being overly casual and talking too much so you can’t get a word in edgewise or question him bc he doesn’t quite know why he did that either.

Samira: Pre-feelings, so long as MC doesn't look uncomfortable, she would feel it would be rude to intrude even if she thinks it is a bad look for someone to be flirting with an engaged person so openly bc she is not nobility and feels a bit out of place cutting in between nobles but she would offer sympathetic looks if she can tell mc is just enduring it. Post-feelings, she might start to choose to interpret the noble's actions as overly brazen and mc as uncomfortable just to give herself an excuse to cut in. Would be staring daggers at the other noble even after they left despite herself.

Nihm: pre-feelings, would feel it would be bad for someone to be flirting with an engaged mc so openly and might leave it for Kieran to handle out of respect but if Kieran doesn’t notice then they might try to politely cut in so as not to cause a scene. post-feelings, they are going to have some internal suffering and maybe staring at mc longingly from across the ballroom as they try to figure out what they should do. Might cut in to avoid a bad situation and then feel really awkward afterwards bc they've cut in for selfish reasons and now don't know what to do about it. Might just leave out of embarrassment.

Lilith/Lucien: Petty about it either way. They might debate about stepping in at first and then very quickly lose that self-debate—if one even occurred at all—and scare away the noble, which wouldn't be hard considering L's reputation in Celestyl. They’d be pretty smug about having your undivided attention. They tend to pout if you choose someone else over them, depending on the situation.

Hello! I saw your response to the "5 things you could talk about for an hour" tag game, and I just wanted to say that I am in fact very interested in your perspective on how fandom/fanfic has impacted media literacy and the publishing industry, if you'd ever like to yap on Tumblr about it!

hmmm... other people have said it better than me in various different tumblr posts but I'm a yapper why not?

fandom/fanfic impacts on media literacy:

media is viewed through shipping goggles first and a critical lens second (both of them are allowed! i love my shipping goggles! but i also like having multiple tools of analysis in my arsenal!)

this also sometimes means that media devolves into relationships and 'fan service' moments, above plot or delivery of a good and satisfactory story (I'm not saying OFMD but I kind of am. I'm not saying BG3 additional content that has focused on popular characters and ships above incomplete and underwritten narratives... but I kind of am)

because fandom now also has a big purity culture kick back, and fandom has become mainstream, that means mainstream media also has a purity culture kick back (for instance, everyone performing scandalised and 'disgusted' reactions to Saltburn, when actually all that is is a... psychological thriller)

fandom/fanfic impacts on the publishing industry:

the Locked Tomb's popularisation of fic-ish writing, alongside the reylo fanfic boom (Ali Hazelwood serial numbers filed off -> romance pipeline) kind of coincided perfectly with the pandemic. as did the success of Travis Baldree's coffeeshop AU, Legends and Lattes. people wanted comfort media, but at the other end, publishing industry professionals were working from home and likely spread thin. I think this created a perfect storm for 'fast fiction' (like 'fast fashion') where basically a fanfic can be quickly changed into a book with minimal editing that doesn't matter anyway bc it provides a dopamine hit. None of this is inherently bad. I don't dislike fanfic-to-published-novel on principle. What I *hate*, is bad editing. Extremely high quality editing is what trad publishing has, in a way fic doesn't. Bc fic can be as long as you want it to be, and can linger, and can have fun - it's not designed for efficiency or quality control bc that's not the point. that being said... quality control can, in fact, improve a work's quality. but trad publishing doesn't have good editing anymore, bc the pandemic proved it didn't necessarily need it, and publishing companies love to not spend money on things, especially if it will make them a profit without that care or attention.

what i will also say, is there is a reason it's easy to file the serial numbers off. reylo fics are very far from canon, for a number of reasons. Legends and Lattes is a coffeeshop AU, without any character work. This doesn't mean they are bad. It just means they feed into a general trend of 'fic as tropes' - rather than 'fic as character study', for instance - which in turn means that romance in particular has also become 'romance as tropes' (or even 'romance as smut' which is another thing I have feelings about, bc bad editing + fiction as smut = really, really bad smut actually lads)

in general 'fiction as tropes' has then obviously been aided by tiktok as the primary marketing platform. rather than provide an explanation of your story, providing an explanation of its tropes encourages your book being read this way

another thing that has happened as a result of fic is 'queer rep' as being 'there is queer people in it' or 'there is queer romance in it'. again, not inherently a bad thing. i love a gay book. but gay and queer experiences exist on a spectrum. a book with queer MCs for the sake of having queer MCs may end up feeling tokenistic, if the writer has included queer rep for the sake of queer rep, or (and we need to admit this happens!) to be trendy!! to hit on the 'queer rep' zeitgeist!!! similarly, a queer book without any romance in it can still be queer, but gods forbid we have *that* conversation.

As I said, all of these things have been discussed in tumblr posts far better than mine. In terms of my personal experience - teaching undergraduate literature classes, this is what I've noticed:

because of fandom or social media with fandom lite edges, a lot of my students are very up-to-date on things such as intersectional feminism, gender performativity, compulsory heterosexuality, queer coding, etc. I don't need to define these terms, whereas they were defined when I was an undergrad.

however, the flipside of this is they often approach the texts I teach only with a contemporary mindset. The biggest example I have of this is Jane Eyre. Jane Eyre actually benefits from a contemporary mindset - after being heralded as feminist in the 1960s, intersectional criticisms in the 1980s/90s by postcolonial critics called out its racist treatment of Bertha Mason. BUT if I have to read another essay about Jane Eyre's relationship with Rochester being 'problematic', I will scream. Not bc I don't agree, but because criticisms of this novel need to also acknowledge that in the victorian era, such a blatant discussion of female sexual desire was radical for its time. That class and sexism was a big enough issue in the 19th century that for Jane to get to marry a man from the landed gentry on equal footing was a big deal at the time. It's fine if you decide Jane Eyre isn't feminist! but you need to prove that through multiple critical lenses and not just a jezebel-article style treatise. (for instance, one essay critiqued the male gaze in Jane Eyre... Jane Eyre was written by a woman looking very disrespectfully actually, and also... film hadn't been invented yet. while the male gaze existed in art, the normalising of female objectification, sexually, required film. also... the male gaze is a term that requires a man with eyes to be making that piece of art.)

the other biggest problem I have when teaching, is the 'queer character as queer representation' thing, and ESPECIALLY "good queer representation means morally good queer characters'. I teach Giovanni's Room. Anyone who has read Giovanni's Room, knows that the main character is both gay... and a bad person. That book isn't just talking about being gay, but about being closeted, trapped in compulsory heteronormativity, and also... 1950s racism. One of the biggest challenges for me as a teacher is to ask students "don't just tell me there's gay people in it, look at what those gay people are doing. is queerness portrayed positively or negatively? what aspects of the experience are being represented? do these aspects have value, especially when it is a queer artist making the art?"

(people also feel like they can't call a gay character mean or bad, because of the whole 'gay is inherently virtuous' part of fandom's mindset. spoilers: gay people can suck too. and are allowed to be portrayed as such in fiction, once you have a tool in your toolkit known as nuance).

anyway, aside from the fact it means i occasionally struggle to find good romance books bc I want not just well written sex but character development - which fanfic has! I'm not saying fanfic doesn't have it! but the fanfic that gets published sometimes doesn't, and certainly very rarely has both! - my teaching is absolutely where I see fandom's impact most clearly.

[translation: who is this, hmmm?]

and when you finally do it and ask sae to find it (you didn't say his name was in ur mehendi, but just told him that there's a surprise thing he should try and find) he'll be so confused— but at the same time he finds this very interesting so he'll just take your hands and let his eyes wander over your palms with a blank expression. it takes him a few minutes because the way it's written is so small, but when he does find it, he's gonna give you the most incredulous look ever followed by a light shrug to play off the fact that his heart is beating really fast !!! ♡

"cute. i don't get why you did that, though."

"because i love you, sae." you huffed, rolling your eyes. "maybe i should replace it with somebody else's name if you don't get why i—"

"don't be stupid," he cuts you off with his low voice, before kissing the exact same spot on your palm where his name is as you caress his cheek right after. "only my name."

same goes for rin, except he's so much more flustered than his brother is !!!! the poor boy will take quite a lot of time to find the "surprise" you were talking about, because obviously he knows nothing about mehendi and you really just told him to go in blind— you'd have to show him yourself. when you do, he'll kinda go stiff at first as he reads the three letters of his name, and then look up at you with this adorable expression that makes your heart race.

"....that's my name." he says, a confused yet surprised tone to his voice as he looks at you with slightly wide eyes.

"yup," you giggle, continuing to point at the tiny writing on your palm as you stare at him with loving eyes. he bites his lower lip gently, running his fingertip over the skin. "people usually hide their lover's name in their mehendi and i wanted to do it with yours." you explain softly.

his reaction is too cute. the way he can't find anything to say in response to this is enough to satisfy you and make you feel happy. "i like that. does it, like, stay forever?"

"no, baby." you laugh. "mehendi goes away in days. it depends."

"oh, okay," he nods. "makes sense, but i kinda want it to stay there forever. can you get it done again or something?" his eyes shine with admiration as he asks with a slightly smug expression. he likes the idea of his name on your skin a little too much, it seems.

(kinda gives me easily annoyed gf and chill bf vibes) has the guy give you a sukhi puri before you can even ask !!!!!!! ⁠♡ and if you want to go eat golas right after, he's all for it !!!! you have to guide him w the flavours though, telling him like "ok we hate this flavor but this other flavor is our bestie." and he's gonna nod and try whichever one you like the most. COMMON MISCONCEPTION(S).  uhhh hmmm lots and lots and lots about dark. he's not actually chaotic evil despite his edgy appearance and anime villain colorscheme; he's chaotic good. he's just as equally silly and approachable as he is sensual, serious, and a diehard romantic. he's subtle and manipulative but he's not trying to manipulate daisuke anymore in any selfish way. dark likes to flirt and is the 'cool' and 'hot' one but he's also so Doomed, you guys, and canonically, actually actively avoids 'true' love bc he knows how doomed he is, leaving him with what i call a 'good host(club host) mentality.'(aka, he wants people to feel good around him with his charisma but he'll pretty much never actually commit.) power of love despite it all is very real to dark even if he personally can't feel anything without daisuke. speaking of daisuke, the simplest misconception is that he's weak or a wimpy coward. he's not and almost always pushes bravely through fear (real courage shines in the dark of terror my friends) and always gives it his all for anything he puts his mind to. also, he's awkward, but once he comfortably warms up to someone, he can be incredibly romantic and loving. dai being clumsy is true in its own way (he's a little scatterbrained most of the time) but that's at odds with the fact he is still quite literally a trained phantom thief, which is easy to forget sometimes. dai's also not a perfect woobie, dark's literally meant to represent his flaws and the sins of his family: daisuke and dark is, in the end, a fallen angel, someone who's supposed to be 'guilty' of sin and likewise a sinner. i can't think of anything else huge off the top of my head but i'm sure there's more.

AN IMPORTANT HEADCANON.  dark is daisuke's dream and daisuke is dark's heart. it's plastered all over my blog and only visually represented within canon, so i regard it as somewhat more of a headcanon than canon might have it. dark embodies daisuke's aspirations, he encourages and inspires daisuke to have something to reach out for and step forwards towards, the sort of 'self' he wants to become, if not absorb traits of self-confidence and 'style' from. dark, as a nonhuman entity, requires daisuke as his human host and heart both to literally live, exist, and to feel anything; he also has a line that canonically states [he] as an artwork, "cannot exist outside of a human's dream." dark and dai should not necessarily ever be physically separated or pit against each other in a contest of favoritism. if you want to fully love dark, you also have to acknowledge daisuke. if you want to fully love daisuke, then you have to acknowledge dark. the way i portray them in their canon verse, they're always at the point where they're basically in positive harmony with each other. i don't really even consider myself a multi just because dark and daisuke are supposed to be that intertwined and reflective of each other; when you cut down to their absolute character cores, how they feel about themselves and their own thematic functions, they truly are the same despite their superficial personality differences.

A USELESS HEADCANON.  daisuke considers a lot of his skills as a phantom thief useless, but his absurd dexterity can come in handy in some other ways. aside from all the fun little magic tricks he knows how to perform, if you show him how things work and then turn around so he doesn't feel pressured and get embarrassed, he can basically perfect full combo any rhythm game for you or hit the jackpot every single time at an arcade in games of skill. dark also has a plethora of talents that he either doesn't care to use, or rarely gets the opportunity to use- for example, in canon he's shown to know how to ballroom dance (very capably, at that,) and so i've let him inherit from his inspiration as the phantom of the opera: he's also capable of playing just about any instrument, has memorized an impressive repertoire of pieces, and has an exquisite singing voice that he sometimes lulls daisuke to sleep with, especially since daisuke is the only one who can actually hear his voice most of the time.

POTENTIAL TRIGGERS.  uhhhhh thematics of loss, death, and grief? crime? theft? the suffocating feeling of being trapped in an inherited cycle or religious trauma in the form of unwilling martyrs and manmade devils? the occasional delve into light-ish psychological horror? lots of stuff happens to dark and daisuke that could be considered triggering, for example getting shot and outright physically injured by magic and literal swords, but dnangel isn't rlly out to hurt anybody rather than teach people how to move on and cope with various forms of loss, loneliness, and separation.

SOMETHING YOU ENJOY ABOUT (WRITING) THEM.  god the contradictions. always. daisuke has one foot in the criminal sphere that's very popular in the tumblr rpc but his magical-girl alignment simultaneously makes him a complete and total fish out of the water. the monster has a heart, the boy is a monster, it's very meta for a chara who's trying to keep a secret and quite literally bears a curse that inevitably isolates him away from any true intimacy. that chaotic good rather than outright chaotic evil throws soooo many people off, it's so funny. dai's somehow a bastard rogue and the most kind-hearted middle schooler ever, and this is something that once the muns have grappled over, their muses have to grapple with too. i think the moral dilemma that dai n dark both present to others (are you going to hurt dark? are you willing to, even knowing he's daisuke? what about not knowing, and only learning after you've hurt him?) alongside the dilemmas that dai n dark have to face themselves (are you going to tell? do you know what you want? do you belong here? can you trust this person) is always entertaining.

SOMETHING YOU WANT OTHERS TO KNOW BEFORE WRITING WITH THEM. nothing in particular comes to mind rn? you can go through my reference tag if you want to see me ramble about hc stuff for miles, otherwise, the only thing i can think of is that dark and daisuke literally share a single body, and their transformations into one another can be extremely fluid, hence me not separating their interactions or IC tags. it's okay to question and ask yourself who the hell you're actually interacting with because again, dark and daisuke have such a weird relationship of host/possessor + alter ego/alter ego (yet actually are one and the same) going on. for the most part tho, dont worry about it. just act naturally. also yeah dark's wings are real and he actually does have freaky demon teeth and weird eyes. daisuke's just a lil guy but chances are he WILL try to befriend and support you, so like, know what you're getting into with that and all.

i've always been overleveled bc i'm not really interested in having to overcome challenges. i just want to have fun, and difficult content isn't fun for me. i'd rather do something else if i can't do something i feel like doing right away... if i don't want to work up to it then i don't really care to try again.

but if i don't want to get good at the game, being a part of a community will be way out of reach. and if i'm not in one, it feels like a waste of time, just like a singleplayer would.

❄️ Snow - Who is your coldest / most stoic character and how do they express themselves (if at all)?

hmmm... that's a tough one, actually?? i never realized how emotional my casts were until i had to pick the cold/stoic one LMAO maybe bonnie? dillon's friend bonnie, not the robot bunny bonnie. she's the earth element to dillon's fire, moira's water, and the twins' air (there you go, have some secret friend group dynamic lore). i think she comes off to most people outside their little clique as really aloof and putting the brakes on "fun," but when that fun involves making teenage bullies choke on magic flowers and fucking with forces unknown... yeah, somebody has to be the voice of reason. she's not a particularly loud person -- in fact, i don't think she's raised her voice at all, or if she will later in the book. she tends to be on the blunt side and prefers honesty with a light dusting of sugar (because she's not an asshole) to candy-coating everything to soften the blow.

🌫 Fog - What was the hardest part of your WIP to write?

hhhhhh all of it no but like. straight up -- and i know my friends and readers will loudly disagree with me -- i kind of hate chapters 19-21 of between a rock and a hard place; it's not gonna be permanent, obviously, but "filler episodes" while fun are an actual nightmare for me to write because i worry that it's all just unnecessary fluff. it's not, especially in the angstfest that is brhp, because there does need to be a little rest stop between bludgeoning atria to death with the shovel of emotions™️ so readers can breathe, and so the angst doesn't get exhausting. but they're such slow chapters, nothing really happens, and it's all... idk family worldbuilding, which i've been super self-conscious about recently? a bunch of stuff got cut from the final versions of all three chapters bc i was like, "hm. this is cringe actually." and deleted uhhh some pretty big sections.

this is a hard question HMM i feel like usually creative, intelligent people on the positive side. i enjoy a variety of kinds of art and i think bc of that i attract similar-minded people. i also don't rlly tend to take a lot of bullshit (from people i'm close to - i'm much less confrontational with strangers/acquaintances) so i keep a good circle of straightforward communicative friends. of course, on the flip side, that also attracts less pleasant people, but it's usually pretty easy to cut those types out of my life. idk i've also had a very bad record of accidentally attracting drama-starters/enjoyers which is never any fun. probably bc i am accidentally too nice and usually try to maintain any friendship even when i shouldn't... I'm curious, what would your ideal FE be?

And do you have any particular FE concepts in mind?

Hmmm, I've been thinking this over since you sent it to me, and it's hard to say because there's a lot of things I like that I dunno if they'd actually work together, if that makes sense? Mostly I just have a lot of thoughts about things I'd like to see in a FE game, which I can write out. Under the cut bc, length (it is Very Long, I'm so sorry). Also fair warning that I'm kind of rambling with some direction and organization, but this was all very train-of-thought while I wrote.

Like, ideally, my first thing would to be to get rid of all gender-locked classes. They're absurd. Fates got the idea right by getting rid of them, honestly (although I think women should be allowed to be butlers and men maids, as a treat, even though I know those two classes were literally the same class w/ different aesthetics). I don't have any specific wants for which classes should appear, be added, or be dropped really, just so long as the classes make sense for the overall story (Fates once more takes the prize for having the most narratively-appropriate and creative classes). I would like to see some really weird classes though, like the wolf riders in Engage are Very Cool bc wolves, and I want more weird stuff like that. Give me people riding skeleton animals, or giant bugs, as well as bears and moose and all manner of creatures that actually exist. I mean heck, historically camels and elephants were used as mounts, and we've yet to see either in FE. I also want more diversity and creativity in the infantry classes. Again, whatever fits the aesthetic and themes of the story, but I feel like we only get a handful of really weird infantry classes every now and then if we're lucky. Mounting/dismounting should be a permanent mechanic as well, there's nothing more satisfying that sticking a flier in archer range and then having them get off their flying beast.

Also weapon durability should stay gone, I hate weapon durability so much. Although I do like how combat arts and spells worked in Echoes and Three Houses, but like, the mechanics need to be tweaked. The easiest solution would be to simply have like, an attack power meter or something similar that characters could draw on to use combat arts and spells. Also, rather than locking combat arts to specific weapons a la Echoes, have is so that each character either has unique combat arts (and spells), or that they can learn combat arts and spells from specific weapons that they've "mastered" by using a certain number of times in combat, which they can then carry-over to a different weapon.

I also liked how 3H allowed any class to use any weapon, but I think this also needs to extend to magic, so that magic can be used with any class as well. This would open up a lot of opportunity for the player to really experiment mixing and matching classes, weapons, and magic with different units, which I think would be a lot of fun to play (based on how much fun I had with similar mechanics in 3H), and offer a lot of replayability for the sheer madness of trying new things with new characters. This will also do away with a lot of "I love this character, but their stats suck and they're nigh unusable" that sometimes occurs, since the player could theoretically just try out different combinations until they got something that worked (RIP to all the people who said Ignatz wasn't a good unit, I ran him through the thief/assassin line and gave him some magic, and he was a crit machine by the time I landed him in mortal savant, I want more madness like that honestly).

Obviously, having an AP pool would also require mechanics that replenish the pool during battle, which could be any variation or combination of skills, specific actions taken on the map (resting on a specific tile, attacking normally, etc.), or even adding in a special staff. Speaking of, staff durability has to go too, I'm so tired of needing to buy staffs. Also, I know a lot of magic in FE is either "a single spell stored in a tome" (most games) or "spell that character can personally gain access to" (i.e. Echoes, 3H), and like, cool beans, but I think, ideally, I'd want like, actual grimoires or other sorts of magical foci (crystal balls, wands, scepters, magic cards, the possibilities are literally endless). Either the magic weapon allows units more powerful magic attacks (if units had magic specific to them), or "taught" the unit specific types of magic (i.e. a Fire Grimoire might teach a unit fire, elfire, and bolganone, or something along those lines). Also, I want there to be a magic triangle the same way weapons get a triangle, although how that should be arranged (for both) would vary based on what types of weapons and magic the game actually contained.

Aside from what I'd like to see out of classes and battle mechanics, I don't have too many other things to wish for. I really am one of those rare "actually I really do play the game for the mechanics" FE fans. I'd want an interesting, and consistently written, story, mostly. Engage actually hit the story notes perfectly in my opinion, all the characters were about equal in their characterization--even the women were as diverse and interesting as the men--unlike the rampant sexism in Echoes or the uneven characterization depth of 3H, or the unrealized potential due to :too many characters" in Fates; Awakening was fine too, but Engage really polishes the support-based characterization to a shine. So I'd want more of that, like, even if a character is a side character, they should have interesting supports that build their characterization, and I want every character to be about equal in their writing (I know protags obviously get more attention, and that's fine).

Generally I feel like the model for supports is fine, although I think it'd be interesting to have group supports of 3+ characters to contrast the one-on-one of the current support model, just to really add more depth to the characters outside of what they get from the story. Also, while I liked that there was a lot more platonic supports in Engage, I really do miss seeing different paired endings, so I'd honestly bring back S-ranks between non-protag characters, but like, maybe not too many, if that makes sense? Awakening and Fates' supports suffered a bit from the "every man and woman can S-rank every other unit of the opposite gender bc of the child units", whereas I feel that limiting character supports per character really helps to focus the writing in a stronger way (Echoes and Engage did this the best, although I will give kudos to 3H for its unique take on supports, although the roulette of paired endings was...not well-implemented at all). But I also want there to still be a lot of platonic supports, I dunno. Mostly I just want well-written and interesting supports.

Supports aside, the only thing I'd want from the main story--aside from "well-written, consistently written", would be to Not Do whatever the writers were trying to do in 3H. It's my unpopular opinion, but (for as much as I love the characters and gameplay) the story writing just isn't that good or consistent in 3H. Fates, even with it's shitty localization, is more consistently written, and more strongly written, than 3H. FE has never actually been about war a critique of war (go to MGS or like, Triangle Strategy for that). FE flourishes narratively when it's a little goofy, and completely earnest, and focused on a few key narrative themes. I dunno what I'd want to see specifically for those themes, because I enjoy all sorts of stories, but yeah...(although to be fair, FE would probably fail as a cosmic horror story--or as any type of true horror--so I wouldn't want that I suppose, despite loving cosmic horror). Also, no split-timelines, multiple routes, etc. Just one storyline. I don't hate how Fates and 3H use multiple storylines, but...I prefer a singular story arc.

The music has been really good for basically every game, so I'd be fine with the current composers being allowed to do whatever they please. Now the art direction...I have a lot of conflicting thoughts because, on one hand, I know why a lot of the things I have personal beef with exist from a production standpoint (almost everyone has one of like, four body model types in Engage and it drives me insane bc there is NO body type diversity, but also for the modelers, it was probably more cost-effective to just have a handful of models for each class to swap out character heads and palettes for class changes, but I still hate the lack of body diversity, but I also understand why it would be easier, but...and so on).

That said, if we are talking what my absolute ideal would be, I just, really, really want diverse character designs. I want many different body shapes and sizes, I want lots of different skin tones (and please enough with the nigh grey-skinned characters), I want people to have actual noses and more than one or two nose shapes, I want crooked teeth and wrinkles and other "allegedly unflattering" physical appearances for characters who aren't evil, and just, I want the character design to really push beyond the whole "aesthetically pleasing based on the current sense of what is considered aesthetically pleasing" that I've seen in...too many media. Also enough with making all villains "ugly" (or the weird "big tiddy evil lady" trope, we've moved beyond demonizing women by making them sexy femme fatales), like, as much as I love the cartoonishly evil villains, sometimes the caricatures are just, tiring and uninspired. Honestly, Heroes is pulling more weight in the "interesting villain designs" department (as well as Kozaki just pulling all the weight in trying to have more diverse designs for women for Heroes), and just, we need more of that in the mainline games.

Also, for as far as like, animations and cutscenes and stuff, I feel like Engage made a lot of progress with it's pre-rendered cutscenes (they're back to being on par with the animations for Awakening and Fates, which had the best pre-rendered animated cutscenes of the games I've been using as examples, in my opinion), but the in-game cutscenes reverted back to the characters standing around in a circle talking a la 3H. We'd never get something like Sumia punching Chrom on the screen in either 3H or Engage, and that's a real shame bc the 3D models do look a lot more complex and pretty than the little polygon people of Awakening, Fates, or Echoes, and yet the in-game cutscenes don't do anything with them. Again, I get that from a production standpoint, having a handful of stock animations for body language and then setting the characters in a circle in a skybox to talk is easier and less-intensive cost-wise, but damn does it really suck the life out of the story at that moment. If it wasn't for the stellar voice acting, then scenes would really fall flat I think. So yeah, more character design diversity all around, better utilization of 3D assets.

And that's...where I think I'm gonna call this a post. I don't have any particular concepts for a hypothetical FE game, partly bc any time I think, "I wish this narrative device or type of story existed" I just end up taking it and turning it into one of my many personal original project ideas instead. Which is...probably why I don't have a lot of AU ideas ever, bc part of me figures if I'm gonna change that much from canon, I might as well just make up my own thing entirely and be bound by no rules except my own. But since I can't see myself getting into game coding and trying to make my own game anytime soon, I can at least think about the types of things I'd like to see in a FE game, though they may never come to be.

Then, Domo and Deki(who is a Domo's physiotherapist) talk about how they know each other for a very long time.

Domo: Yeah Deki is a very good friend and colleague. Along with massaging me, he also cooks very well

Deki: oh Vida cooks even better. He puts us all in the car and takes us to the nearest restaurant

 Host: How does your wife handles the fact that you are in mostly men's company?

Domo: oh, she handles it well. We can also always leave them to handle David for a few hours and we go out alone

 Host: What memories do you associate with your time in Russia in 2018?(directed at Deki)

Deki, trying not laugh: Well, I definetly remember the atmosphere

 Host: What about you Domagoj?

Domo: Well, for me, I mostly remember what we did in our free time. How we had fun, and most fond memories come from massage room where the whole team often spent a lot of time

 Host: During doček you were hanging from the bus few times right? Who kept you up again?

Domo: oh yeah, I hanged like a ceiling lamp. Suba and coach held me up. But generally, that whole day is one of my most fond memories. Whenever I am at hard point in my life, I turn on doček on youtube and I instantly feel better

Domo: It's weird you know? People still tell me „Thank you" even today as they did on doček

 Host: How was it with all the mixed feelings after the final? Were you all proud immediately after or was there some bitterness at first?

Domo: well, it all depends on people individually. For me, it hit ne hard. We were so close to winning and I was crushed. Everyone kept telling me "keep your head high, we should be proud". It was only after we came back to hotel and started celebrating that the good feelings started to come back

Domo: ooof. ćevapi. I am sick of burek from Istambul, I eat it every third day.

 Deki: which teammate would you choose for a partner in show potjera(hunt)?

(So in the show, there are 4 people who signed up to be there and they form a team. They need to go through three challenges to leave with money, and "the hunter", has to try and catch them by answering more questions than them. It's a bit more complicated than that but that's the gist of it)

Domo: Badelj

Deki: which teammate would you let cook you dinner?

Domo: ufff. I don't think anyone here know how to. Hmmm *thinking for thirty seconds *

Deki: Kale, maybe?(Kalinic in case someone doesn't understand our dumb nicknames)

Domo: no, he has good prosciutto, but that isn't cooking

Domo: Sluga! Yes, he is good!

Domo: that-that's. Well. I guess you don't have many of them

 Host: one of the players you worked with privately, even outside of national team is Mario Mandzukic. He is very popular but he has this sort of untouchable image. How is he in his private life?

Deki: he is only like that in public. He is like the rest of the team. For me, they are firstly good people, and only then good players

Deki: we all know what Mario is like. He seems like he is no good but he is actually a very good man(direct translation is he is a soul of a man which is a term used in croatian)

Domo, in a bit silly voice: soul

Domo: a good man but...no I am kidding. He is a good man and we miss him here in nt. I think he retired too early but it was his choice and we respect it. The two of us(he and Deki he means) used to spend time with him more than the others and he is truly a great man. And he is always ready to help, not just those he is on good terms with but everyone

 Host: you said yourself massage room is very important in national team. Is it the same in your club as well?

Domo: well no, not as far as I noticed. People from foreign countries have different rituals, but I noticed this is very important to people from balkan. It's very important for atmosphere. After training and all the activities for the day are done, 10 or so of us guys will gather there for massage and since you go in one by one as you wait there will be fun and joking around and stuff like that. So that's very important for atmosphere, which we saw in Russia how important that can be

Host, jokingly: it isn't the breaks?

Domo: ufff. So, I like the most when a day before the actual game, older play against younger and it's the very end of the game. With centre shots between two people

 Deki: favorite club when you were a child?

Domo: Barcelona

Domo: I suppose-

Host: so, what music do you play before and after games and what in the bus?

Domo: well, mostly narodni radio. But I mostly gave up that role to others now. To Šime Vrsaljko, and there was Jedvaj before, too

Domo: and I think during this time we'll get Livaković to do it too. He is young and he will have a long career in nt, so we should teach him how it's done

Host: you already answered this for UEFA, but I was wondering if you could repeat it. Who is the best dancer, singer etc of the team?

Domo: I am not sure I remember what I said

Host: I can remind you. You said Livakovic is the best dancer

Domo: oh, yes, true! He is the best dance he has these moves *moves side to side with hands and body * and does everything with his hips

Domo: there is no best singer. We sing the best all together

Deki: well I used to love watching Milan during Boban's time. Today, I love watching Real Madrid. And for players Luka of course. Benzema-

 Host: so how is now with Corluka being a coach when he was your teammate only a short while ago?

Domo: well, it's only the first day so we didn't have much time to talk. It's a bit weird with Carli being a joker and a gentlmen both in one. We are used to joking around but during training now that isn't the case because he is the coach and he should be treated as such. After it though, we can relax a bit more and talk

Do you have any experience writing large groups of people? I'm writing a crossover fanfiction where the crew from one of the Star Treks is playing DND but there's 8 people in their party and that feels like a lot to me. I don't know how to write 8 people going around doing shit and how to make all the character sound like themselves and idk it just feels a little crowded.

hmmm let me pull out my “I swear I’m a competent writer” glasses because writing is much easier than writing about writing for me but let me try (and put under a cut bc it got a bit long)

I have….some experience, actually, I guess it might be considered more than some people since it is very rare for me to write anything with just one main/POV character. My space novels have a main cast of five, and I think the biggest group scene I’ve done was actually in my fallout fic with the whole Railroad crew that clocked in at around seven speaking parts.

and tbh that was A Lot.

In terms of advice…..first of all I think if you’re feeling like it’s Excessive, I’d ask if it’s really necessary to have all eight of them in this story. I know with ensemble casts like that it can be tough to decide to sequester someone for whatever reason, but excuses can always be found as to why a few people couldn’t make it. (”Yeah, they’re currently puking for the night, maybe next time”) Don’t overstretch yourself if it would just make the whole thing more stressful trying to include Everyone.

Whether you end up with eight people or like, five, a kinda similar strategy is the only way I manage big group things: never be afraid to split the party, even if it’s just in terms of conversations.

My space kids, for example, split up a lot. There are plenty of scenes with all of them together, because they are a team and they gotta do stuff together, and the team dynamic is really fun to work with, but there are also a lot of opportunities for them to go off in pairs or a group of 3, and that makes things infinitely easier. Plus it gives real good chances to focus on specific relationships that might not come out as much in a full group setting.

A little harder, I realize, if they’re all sitting around a table playing DND (depending on whether this is meant to be a fic like….with a view of the table, or a fic within their DND universe with some 4th wall breaking or something), but I assume since you’re writing about it you’ve played yourself (just, I also assume, not with a party that big). I take some example from Critical Role with this in that there even when the party is technically all together, specific conversations happen among specific people while the rest of the players sit there and (mostly) are quietly listening.

All that to say like…..don’t be afraid to have things come up that not everyone has an opinion on. I don’t know the Star Trek people but you might have a player that’s like Ashley Johnson, who doesn’t speak up a whole lot, but when they do it is Profound. When you’ve got two or three people talking, there might be a short interjection from someone else, but the rest probably don’t need to come into play much unless it’s super relevant.(And there is always the possibility of someone starting to interject with their own comments and a Stronger Personality at the table telling them to shut up because Character X is talking -- someone’s gotta maintain some kinda order with big parties)

Keeping everyone in character is def a challenge when you have that many voices to juggle. One possibility is making a specific page somewhere with a list of everyone and a little list for each of them of very specific in-character lines, like the kind you consistently hear in their voice. Enough that if you feel like you’re losing someone, you can pop over to that and get a quick refresher on them. Even video clips if you get Real ambitious about it.

so in a kinda long tl;dr –

If you don’t feel comfortable with that big of a group, you do not have to have that big of a group. Don’t feel guilty for picking a couple of favorites, it’s fanfic, that is what fanfic is for.

Don’t be afraid to split the party. Have people go off in smaller groups to cut down on the time you have to deal with everyone all at once, and also to make those times even more significant.

No one is going to have an opinion on everything every single time, and some might be just quiet players in general. It’s perfectly okay if everyone is together and not everyone has big things to say. If you want to remember that they are there, just throw in a nod in agreement once in a while or something.

If you get to a classic DND situation where everyone is yelling all at once, it’s fine to just say as much – one or two prominent lines before “the group devolved into increasingly loud attempts to be heard over each other as everyone voiced their opinions at once.”

Keep references of the characters to remind yourself what they sound like. Just getting a couple of lines that are very much them makes it easier to get back into their voice and personality.
