Tips to Succeed as a Pre-Med
Hi Guys! I’m currently finishing up my final semester of pre-med classes and am getting ready to prepare for the MCAT. I learned so much through these past 2 years and thought it would be fun to compile a list of all the lessons, tips, and tricks that allowed me to maintain a high GPA (3.8)!!
Some background information about me:
Major: Psychology
Minor: Chemistry and Biology
Commitments:
Division III student-athlete: 20-30 hours a week
Executive board for my sorority: 5-10 hours a week
Cabinet position for Phi Delta Epsilon: 2-3 hours a week
Tips:
At the beginning of the semester look through every single class syllabus and note all the dates for exams, papers, projects, or assignments. I put all of these dates into my online calendar and made sure to have reminders for all of them. My semesters get extremely busy so keeping track of dates helped me stay on top of my work and manage my time in the best way possible.
Ask upperclassmen and other students for help, especially when it comes to scheduling classes or writing lab reports. The reason I’m able to take my MCAT early is because I spent a month asking various upperclassmen in different majors what their schedules were like, what professors were the best, which professors to avoid, and their study tips so I would not have to retake any classes. Along with this, upperclassmen tend to hold onto class materials from previous years (old exams, lab reports, syllabi, etc.). These resources could help you gain a better understanding of a specific professor’s exams, how to write a cohesive lab report, or better understand the structure of a class.
Fight for EVERY POINT. I know this sounds annoying but in the end, you don’t want to miss a grade by 1 or 2 points that you could’ve gotten back. A lot of the classes I got As in were actually by the thinnest of margins and it was mainly because I was willing to fight for points I thought I deserved. It definitely makes you come off as that classic, annoying pre-med student but at the end of the day your grades are important to some degree.
Figure out a study strategy that works for you! Quality over quantity! You don’t want to be wasting hours studying inefficiently because classes get tougher and more time-consuming. Knowing your preferred study methods is super important because of how much time it will save you! I personally read the textbook, hand-write my notes, and use Quizlet RELIGIOUSLY! Some of my friends only need to attend a lecture and then do practice problems consistently. The faster you figure out how you like to study the more time it will save you in the long run!
Pick a major that you will genuinely enjoy. Pre-med core classes are difficult and can be taxing. It helps to take classes that you actually enjoy along with these classes, or pick a major that you know you will like because that will lessen the burden. I picked psychology because I loved the subject in high school and because the department was extremely friendly at the university I attend. Since I find my psychology classes extremely interesting, it makes studying for a bland class like Physics way easier because I know I have something fun to look forward to.
Schedule time to do things other than just work. The biggest mistake I made freshman year was studying too much and focusing on activities that would boost my resume. My grades actually improved when I cut down on the studying and constant working and decided to schedule a weekly day off. During this day I would spend time with friends, catch up on sleep, or just vegetate. Maintaining your hobbies and passions is super important because then you will have other things to focus on and you won’t get burnt out!!
Remember that a bad grade doesn’t define you. This year was the year I failed my first exam and while it was tough to get over, I tried my best to use it as motivation to do better on the next exam. I try to think of every negative event in my life as a learning lesson and that exam taught me that I needed to change my studying habits for that specific class.
There are multiple paths to medicine. I think people put too much of an emphasis on the traditional route, where you graduate in 4 years and then go straight into medical school. Even though I’ll be taking my MCAT early, I’m also open to taking a gap year to work in research or scribe! I love the surge of youtube videos and stories made by people who have non-traditional paths because it shows you that hard work and perseverance will lead you in the right direction for you, whether that is medicine or not.

[Chapter 1]: NEW GIRL [Chapter 2]: LUNCH BREAK [Chapter 3]: THE WALK HOME
By the time I got back to the school the warning bell had already rung. I was so relieved when I walked into my fifth period to find Peter sitting at the table in the chemistry lab and MJ behind him waving me over to sit next to her. There was another boy I didn’t recognize next to Peter, but I quickly became acquainted with him. “Hey Nova,” Peter said as I sat down next to MJ, “This is Ned, Kal just moved here.” The boy, Ned shined his teeth towards me with a welcoming smile, “Sweet, yo if you ever need help on homework ask me. These two are complete dunces.” he said shaking my hand and adding a friendly wink. “Oh okay Ned, you keep telling yourself that.” MJ remarked from beside me causing me to laugh at their bickering.
The teacher quickly went over the syllabus and handed out papers for science donations. Once he was done he put a list up of silly questions on the board and assigned us to discuss them with our lab partners in order to ‘bond’. Five minutes in Peter and Ned had their seats turned towards MJ and I. The four of us talked about everything from Game of Thrones to what element on the periodic table is the most badass. They even invited me to join something called the Academic Decathlon Team. I had completely forgotten about by fight with Jade until she texted me.

Hey, can we talk? I hate fighting with you...
I can give you a ride home if you want. -j
A sigh escaped my lips, a little louder than I intended. Suddenly the groups attention focused onto me. “Woah, damn are you sick of us already?” MJ joked. I smiled tucking my phone away, “No I just got in a fight with Jade and she wants to talk.” A look of concern washed over Peter’s face, “Wait you guys seemed fine this morning, I thought she was taking you to lunch?” The three of them stared at me expectantly ready to hear the beef. Smiling I answered, “It’s really nothing, she was just trying to push her friends on me and when I told her I didn’t like her friends she told me I was committing social suicide. Then I may have said something about her friends being fake...” MJ scoffed, “Well you’re not wrong there.” Ned leaned over to our desk; resting his elbows on the table, “Yeah her friends can be mean sometimes, but maybe Jade just feels bad that you had to move in with them and wants to make sure you can make a life here ya know?” Strumming my nails against my phone case I said “Yea I know she has good intentions, but I feel like sometimes she forgets how much of a geek I am. I mean sure I get along with her and love her like a sister, but it’s a different dynamic when she isn’t with Mary Jane and Gwen. I’d rather hang out with you guys.”

I looked down at my phone to find another text from Jade.
Jade
If you don’t respond I’m gonna pick u up anyways. -j
“Shit.” I murmured. I did want to talk to her but not yet. “Is she texting you still?” Peter asked. “Yea, she’s asking if I want a ride home from school but I don’t feel like talking quite yet. And if I say no she’ll probably just show up anyways.” I explained. “Just tell her I offered to walk you home...” Hugging my backpack in my lap I said, “Are you sure Peter?” Peter shrugged “Y-yea,” He said with a slight crack in his voice. “We’re neighbors so I’d be going the same way anyways. Plus decathlon practice doesn’t start for another week.”
“That’d be awesome, thank you Peter.”
As the conversation moved back to decathlon practice I glanced back down at my phone to text Jade back.

The period ended with an online assignment of a pre-lab due next week. Just before the teacher could explain the system used at the school the bell rang and the herd of wild junior high school students pushed their way out of class. Once out of the classroom Peter and I said out goodbyes to Ned and Michelle as they made their way towards the bus.
Conversation with Peter was comfortable. He could be awkward at times, but he was good with keeping the conversation flowing. Hey, better awkward than forced right. While talking about his friendship with Ned your stomach decided to rudely interrupt by proudly showing off its whale noise demonstration. The talking immediately screeched to a halt before both of us erupted into a fit of laughter.
“Sorry I might be a little hungry, by the time I had walked back from that pizza place lunch was already over.”
Peter’s laughter died down, “Well do you wanna get some food, I know a good place nearby. Best sandwiches in Queens.” he said with a raised eyebrow. “Well how could refuse that,” I said dramatically placing a hand over my chest “Lead the way good sir.” He grinned and nodded his head to the side insinuating to follow him.
“So what has you so interested in science?” He questioned. I smiled towards the uneven concrete littered with gum. “Well my mom is a chemist. So I kind of grew up with her constantly sharing facts about the world. At first I couldn’t stand it, but after a while I found myself intrigued by what she was telling me. Not to mention how convenient it was to already understand things like the conservation of matter when other students were left dazed and confused by the teachers sucky explanation.” Peter hooked his thumbs under the straps of his backpack and said, “So do ya think you’ll go into that field in college?” I looked up at Peter, “Um...” I paused thinking of how to answer, “Well, I really like learning about all that stuff and it’s not like my grades are horrible or anything its just...Once things start to get complicated I start to fall behind. And seeing these brilliant scientists like my mom and Tony Stark.” Peter held the door to the small deli as I continued my thoughts, “I don’t know if I’m smart enough to get into that field.” Peter opened his mouth as if he were going to respond, but before he had the chance the man behind the counter beat him to the punch.
“Mr. Parker! Welcome back," He yelled as we walked towards the counter, “Ah and lady friend, welcome-” The man extended his hand. “Kal.” I said kindly returning the handshake. “Well Miss Kal that’s quite the shake you got there. I assume the usual for you Mr. Parker?” Peter slapped two bags of sour gummies on the counter and responded, “Yea that’d be great Mr. Delmar. How about you Kal?” Confused by the menu I shrugged, “I’ll get whatever you're having.” Mr. Delmar punched something into the old cash register and the worker behind him asked over his shoulder, “Ya want pickles on that?”
“Yes please!” I answered. Peter looked at me in disgust, “Ew, pickles really? I feel like I don’t know you anymore.” Giggling I nudged his side and said “Oh shut it.”
“Alright that’ll be $10″ Mr. Delmar said. Peter and I quickly exchanged glances before racing for our wallets simultaneously. We were quick to tie in our little race as he held out a crisp $10 bill and I extended my debit card towards the man. Mr. Delmar smirked at me as he took Peter’s cash, “Sorry boss, we only take cash here. No cards.”
“Ha!” Peter said grabbing the wrapped up sandwiches from the counter teasingly jogging away with both sandwiches out of the deli. “Hey!” I yelled running after him, quickly catching up and grabbing the sandwich from him. swinging the bag the sandwich was in I asked, “So where does one go to eat the best sandwich in Queens?” He scratched the back of his neck looking up towards the buildings. “Well, it involves a bit of climbing. But we can go somewhere else if you don’t feel like doing that sort of thing.” He said as his voice raised an octave higher with each word. I scoffed, “Oh Peter you seriously underestimate me and my sense of adventure.” He smiled widely, “Okay.” he said grabbing my hand and leading me down an alleyway between two apartment buildings.
“You want me to what?!”
He ended up leading me up a narrow fire escape at least 6 floors up (it really felt like 20) and was now instructing me how to get on top of the building from the roof.
“Just trust me. Climb up onto the railing and reach for my hands and I’ll pull you up. Promise.”
“No offense Pete, but I don’t know if you’ll be able to pull me up.”
“I’m stronger than it seems, c’mon I thought you had a sense of adventure.”
“Hey I do have a sense of adventure”
“Okay prove it then.”
“Shit” I murmured under my breath placing one foot on the rail before standing up and using the brick wall to steady myself. Looking up at Peter I reached one hand out that ended up being inches away from his. “Jump.” He said calmly. “WHAT?” my eyes widened at his suggestion. He simply smiled at my reaction and said, “Trust me. Just keep looking at me. I’ll catch you, promise.”
“That just makes me trust you less.” I said. He didn’t respond he just held his hands out waiting to catch you. Pressing my tongue between my teeth and against my lips I took one last breath and pressed off the fire escape. For a brief moment it felt as if I were going to plummet to my death. The moment passed quickly when I felt Peter’s hand tightly grabbing mine as he swung me up to the rooftop. Once my feet safely reached the floor i delivered a quick punch to his chest. “Ow, what no ‘Thank you for catching me Peter I’m eternally grateful’“ he said mockingly. Laughing at what just happened I could feel the adrenaline pumping through my system, “Oh my god, you do that every time?” I said sitting on a nearby ledge. Peter sat down next to me, unwrapping his sandwich “No actually I’ve never been on this building before, It’s pretty awesome though right?” he said cheekily taking a bit into his sandwich. Shaking my head I stared at the boy in shock, “Peter Parker... Who knew.” He smiled cheesily with his cheeks full of sandwich. Silence overcame over both of us as I unwrapped the sandwich and chewed on my first bit.
“Hey, about what you said earlier in the deli. About not feeling smart enough...” He said breaking the silence. I hummed in response taking another bite. “I think you should know that just because those harder concepts don’t come as easy to you doesn’t mean you’re not smart. If anything that makes you even smarter cause you have to really work hard to be in all those crazy classes you’re taking this year. I think you should seriously consider a science major for college. And if you ever get stuck on anything we could get MJ and Ned together and have a study session. Or if you have any questions you can always tap on my window or text me.” I couldn’t help the smile from spreading over my lips as I said, “Thank you.” He nodded sheepishly looking down towards his lap.
“Gummy?”
He asked offering the bag of candy towards me. Which I gracefully accepted. We spent the rest of the time eating our food discussing the French Revolution for no reason whatsoever.
By the time I made it home it was close to 4:30. Both Mom and Wes were at work meaning Jade was the only one home. “Jay?” I called out into the empty apartment. “In our room!” she yelled back. Placing my backpack on the kitchen chair I made my way back to the room to find her sitting crossed-legged on her bed typing on her computer. I walked over to my bed and sat on the edge, “Whatcha writing?” I asked. “Lyrics for music class. It’s not due or anything, but if I wanna sing something of my own at the winter concert I have to get it approved by Mr. Bell ASAP.” she explained.

“I’m sorry”
“No, I’m sorry Kal. I shouldn’t have tried to force my friends on you. I just think you’re so great I wanted them to like you and you to like them...”
“No Jay, I shouldn’t have said they’re fake. I just feel intimidated by them and I really like hanging out with MJ, Ned, and Peter.”
She grinned, “I know, I should’ve realized they’d be good for you. And Michelle is sweet... Just don’t get on her bad side ‘kay?” I chuckled a quick okay. She pushed her laptop off to the side and turned to lay on her stomach faced towards me, “So how was your first day, anything exciting?” she asked.
“Oh god, you would not believe it...” I said as I began to explain the adventuring with Peter.

The civil service is one of the prestigious and challenging careers in our country. Approximately between 1–2 lakh students appear for MPPSC Prelims. Regarding the total number of selections, it depends on the total vacancies, for example in 2013, there were 755 vacancies, 591 in 2014, 435 in 2015 and 255 in 2016 in 2018 Madhya Pradesh Public Service Commission (MPPSC) has released a recruitment notification for 202 posts of Deputy Collector (Naib Tehsildar), Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) and More.
So you can see the vacancies are decreasing every year and competition increasing, the candidates are giving very tuff competition to each other in this scenario only the focused and systematic study plan can help you to compete. How should you start as a beginner?
As a beginner starting from point zero one can buy mppsc previous year question paper module and attempt some questions daily, moreover the questions from NCERT too will help. MPPSC Civil Services is a comprehensive exam it need at least 2 years of preparation and 10-12 hours daily study. A few people may be lucky who can make it with just one year of study and single attempt. The MPPSC is not just looking for hard working people but also smart working people. MPPSC Prelims Preparation
The first step to enter in MPPSC is prelims exam so you have to be very careful, serious and focused while preparing for the mppsc pre exam. It consists of two papers Paper 1 for General Studies it is of 200 marks having 100 questions each having 2 marks with no negative marking. This is the scoring paper of prelims exam for mains this is the only paper on it's basis you will got selection in mains. You can divide it in 3 parts First Special: approx 20 question comes out 0f 100, you are giving exam for MP state psc then your knowledge about your state should be very much strong. Second part is Current Affairs: at least 10 questions comes from current affairs, The national issues which are currently running in our country you have to knowledge about that, for this read 2 news papers at least. give at least 2 hours to news paper reading for current affairs news. By this your mains exam preparation will be done. Third part is Acts (SC/ST, HR, CR): These are 3 acts added by MPPSC board in syllabus you should have deep knowledge about SC/ST Act, Human Rights Protection Act, Civil Rights Protection Act. Easily 10 question will be coverd by this acts section. So the 40 marks will be covered by these 3 topics MP, Current and Acts. You can crack prelims easily by preparing this three topics so strongly. Remaining 60% will be covered by other subjects like science, history, geography etc.
Paper 2 for General Aptitude it is of 200 marks having 100 questions each having 2 marks with no negative marking. It is qualifying paper you need to score 40% marks in it to qualify and it can be easily done.
MPPSC Mains: Study Plan -
Generally after Prelims exam result announcement aspirants got 60 days to prepare for the Mains exam. These two months are going to be the most important days of your MPPSC mains preparation. In order to crack this, you need a robust mains study plan along with the relevant study material.
I- MPPSC General Studies Paper I
GS 1 mainly contains Geography and History. These portions are static, lengthy and factual in nature. Therefore, most students, especially first-timers tend to spend almost half of their preparation time on this paper. While the weightage of this paper is around 21 %(300/1400). So, the careful utilization of time is the key.
So, instead of reading it thoroughly, read all the topics mentioned in syllabus once this month and then revise it in next month. For Indian History, you can refer to any book which is comfortable for you. For World History, and other important topics of Geography you can refer to these links. It should not take more than two weeks to complete Paper 1.
II- MPPSC General Studies Paper II
GS 2 mainly covers polity and social issues. Polity has mostly static content for which your prelims preparation will help you. Revise those notes; alternatively, you can prepare polity through M. Laxmikant, one of the best source to read polity. Five days are enough to cover Polity along with Security issues.
Next part is the Social Issues which requires knowledge of current affairs. Static portion like acts, organization etc you can cover from here in very little time. Read the schemes of Central and State government concerning Education, Health, Welfare sector etc. along with other topics mentioned in the syllabus. Prepare your own notes and try to cover this portion in 5-6 days. Notes will help you in revision.
III- MPPSC General Studies Paper III
The first half of MPPSC GS paper 3 covers Indian Economy, whereas other half has these important topics: Science & Technology, Reasoning, and DI, Environment, Energy etc.
For Indian economy, you may refer to Sharma Academy's video lectures or Indian Economy by S.N.Lal. These sources will give you an insight on almost every topic mentioned in the syllabus. Along with this, read the summary of ‘Indian Economic Survey’ and ‘Indian & State Budget 2018’. Also, go through the schemes for rural, urban, and agriculture sector. Try to complete it in 5-6 days.
Fo Environment section, you can refer NCERT Books, you can also read these topics from the internet. As environment portion is limited so complete it in two days.
For Science & Technology, the best strategy is to read out the particular topic from Science NCERT class 7-10. And for emerging technologies refer any notes or read it from various internet feeds. It will take two days to complete this part.
For Reasoning, practice the type of questions asked in previous year papers. Refer the source you used for CSAT preparation during prelims preparation.
IV- MPPSC General Studies Paper IV
GS paper 4 is all about ethics and case studies. Student needs to have a clear perspective and positive mindset to attempt this paper. Some of the topics you can read from any book like Ethics by Lexicon Publication or by Arihant. Try to mug up as many thinkers as you can because in past lot of many questions were asked from this topic.
Around 75 marks out of 200 are from case studies and the easiest way to score in them is to practice as many case studies as you can. Cover the entire ethics paper in 4-5 days.
V- MPPSC Paper V: General Hindi
This paper checks your proficiency in Hindi language. Study Hindi Grammar from any standard book and practice letter, report writing etc to secure good marks and take an edge from other students. Do not devote any particular day for this paper, instead, try to give one our daily to finish one topic from syllabus each day.
VI- MPPSC Paper VI: Essay
This paper has the least weightage but it doesn’t mean it is less important. For essay preparation, read newspaper daily to have good content with you and practice one or two essays every Sunday to get proficiency in writing the essay.
The above preparation will take around 35-40 days to cover the whole syllabus once. Then in the remaining days try to revise whatever you read at least two times. One more thing, like study, practice is also very much important for mains examination. Therefore, you must daily do some answer writing practice, or you can join a test series. Test Series is good idea to evaluate your self try to solve the questions in particular time limit and use a timer to analyse your efficiency to write. Specially in word limit question's answer.
MPPSC: Interview preparation
Interview is the third stage of MPPSC examination in this interviewers evaluate the candidate's potential for civil services and examine their personality it is to assess the personal suitability of the candidate for public services. There is no any book or syllabus for interview here you can get high marks with less hard work. Start Interview preparation for MPPSC after the mains exam don't wait for the result. Generally question arise from your surrounding which you mention in your profile (biodata) the interview team will go through your biodata then will ask the questions about your native place, your education, if you were in job they ask about your work experience.

It started in history class last year.
El’s teacher had been trying (and failing) to set up the overhead projector for 20 minutes. Meanwhile, the class was growing antsier by the minute; hushed whispers quickly escalated into full-on conversations, laughter, and before long, no one seemed to care that they were even in class anymore.
The teacher had not only given up on trying to hold back muttered curses of frustration, but also on fixing the projector himself. As the students chucked spitballs and paper airplanes at each other, he called the office, asking for an A.V. club student to come over and fix the “goddamn thing.”
Minutes later, Mike had walked in wearing one of his dorky wool sweaters and a hall pass lanyard around his neck. “What’s the problem?” He’d asked, glancing between the rowdy class and red-faced teacher in both hesitance and alarm.
“This damn projector won’t turn on!” The teacher huffed in reply, “All these good-for-nothing technologies they make us use now…back in my day, there was nothing wrong with good, old-fashioned books and chalkboards!”
“Right,” Mike had said in a dismissive sort of way that made El snort. He moved over to examine the projector more closely, getting out a handful of tools from his backpack.
El had watched as he worked, and though he didn’t notice her, she found herself noticing everything about him. Like the way he pushed up his sleeves, the way he looked so focused, the way he tucked his pocket screwdriver behind his ear when he wasn’t using it, or the way that smiled excitedly when he’d figured something out.
Her heart had done a weird flip-floppy thing in her chest, and as it beat slightly faster, it matched the rhythm of her train of thought: cute, cute, cute, cute.
For a moment, she’d wondered if she was getting sick. She certainly felt like it. Sick and crazy and ridiculous. She knew nothing about him but wanted to know everything.
“There,” Mike had said once he’d finished, “You just had to adjust the Fresnel lens, nothing serious.”
The teacher furrowed his brow. “The what?”
“The condenser?” Mike offered. When the teacher still looked lost, Mike continued, more slowly, “The big glass thing.”
“Oh. Thanks.”
“No problem.”
Mike left the room, El was left reeling.
He’s still wearing that same sweater today, El notices as she sneakily examines him from across the biology classroom. Even though he’s seated in the front row and she’s all the way in the back, she still has a pretty good angle on him. Since his back is to her, she doesn’t even have to worry about him catching her.
As she watches him take notes, she half-heartedly realizes that she’s kind of acting like a total weirdo. Then again, that isn’t far off from her reputation around school.
El knows what other kids at school think of her. She’s not an idiot — she sees the frightened glances she and Max get in when they enter school with their ripped jeans and dark eyeshadow, or the whispers that are exchanged when they’re busted for something.
And yet, while every other student seems to notice her, and how different she is, to Mike, she’s practically invisible.
Well, at least, she was.
Her mind goes back to last Friday, to that grungy detention room. When El and Max had entered, and El had seen them, him, she hadn’t been able to stop herself from gasping, though it was only loud enough for Max to hear.
“What?” Max had hissed, glancing back at her.
“Nothing,” El had muttered quickly.
“You know these dweebs?” Max moved her gaze towards the boys in their desks.
“I know Mike,” El had admitted, hoping she didn’t sound too nervous, “He’s president of the A.V. Club.”
Mortensen had turned to lecture them after that, shutting down any further questions from Max, which El was immensely grateful for. She’s definitely not ready to let Max know that she has a crush on a ‘dweeb’ like Mike. She’d never hear the end of all the teasing.
But despite Max almost finding out about her crush, last Friday was definitely the best day ever. Mike had sat right next to her. Without her even asking. And he’d talked to her.
Just thinking about it makes El want to explode, but in a good way. It also makes her doodle hearts in the corner of her notebook as she daydreams about Mike and all the various ways he could confess that he can’t stop thinking about her, either.
She’s in the middle of imagining an elaborate scenario that involves a bouquet of waffles and a motorcycle ride when she abruptly realizes that everyone in the class, including the teacher, including Mike, is staring at her.
She freezes, wishing more than anything that she could disappear. Should she say anything? She can’t just keep sitting here, looking like a total mouthbreather…
“Eleanor?” The teacher, Mrs. Hawthorne, asks. She’s looking at El over the rim of her glasses, the way she always does when she’s had it up to here with someone. “Can you answer the question?”
What question? She wasn’t even listening!
El swallows, cheeks feeling hot. “I…uh…I don’t know,” she mumbles quietly.
“I don’t know,” Troy, Hawkins High’s resident asshole, quietly mimics in a squeaky voice, earning a hushed round of snickers from his cronies.
El gives him a death glare, but Troy ignores her.
“That’s ok,” her teacher says gently, “But you need to pay attention.” This only causes more snickers from Troy and his friends, and El can feel her hands start to shake.
Keep it under control. Not here, not here.
She takes a deep breath and relinquishes her grasp just as the teacher asks, “Can anyone else answer the question?”
Mike raises his hand, and El feels her heart skip a beat. “The nictitating membrane is a frog’s third eyelid,” He answers easily, “It helps the frog keep its eye moistened.”
“Frogface,” Troy not-so-subtly coughs.
Mike rolls his eyes, but El notices the red tinge of embarrassment creeping up his cheeks. For the second time in the past minute, she wants to completely destroy Troy, or, at the very least, give him what he deserves (which, to be fair, is complete destruction).
“Thank you, Michael,” Their professor says, throwing Troy a dirty look. “Now that we’ve covered the pre-lab questions, I think we oughta get started with the experiment.”
Experiment? El turns her focus to the board, trying to remember what they’re even studying right now.
“For the frog dissection, I’m going to assign you partners at random,” Mrs. Hawthorne explains.
Oh right. They were dissecting frogs today. Remembering this makes El’s stomach churn, and she starts to feel anxious. This is a class that she’s been dreading ever since their teacher first mentioned it, though she’d completely forgotten that they were doing it today.
Mrs. Hawthorne starts reading out names in pairs, matching students up with their respective lab partners. El crosses her fingers under her desk, hoping, praying, she won’t get Troy. He’s the only thing, at least that she can think of, that’s more disgusting than having to cut open a frog.
“Eleanor...”
Please not Troy, please not Troy, ANYONE but Troy...
“...You’ll be working with Michael.”
El freezes. Michael? As in…
Mike turns to glance back at her with a small smile, and El feels herself melt. Seriously. Her heart feels all mushy and her stomach is all flip-floppy and it takes everything within El to not grin like an idiot. Nevertheless, she’s able to maintain the indifferent, stoic look that she often sports around school — the look that shields her from seeming like the total dope she feels like on the inside.
Mrs. Hawthorne finishes pairing up the rest of the class. When she tells everyone to get started, the whole class gets up in a chaotic flurry of movement. Everyone’s running to either their partner, their lab table, or the supply closet in the back of the room. El is just rising to her feet — legs feeling like Jell-O — when suddenly Mike is standing right in front of her and she’s trying to remember how to blink properly.
“Hey,” he says.
“Hey,” she replies, suddenly feeling self-conscious about everything she’s doing, like how she’s standing. Should she put her hands in his pockets, like he’s doing, or should she cross them? On her hips? WHY was worrying about this, again?
“So, I guess we’re like, partners,” Mike says.
“Yeah,” El says, amazed at just how nonchalant she’s able to sound, considering the circumstances.
Mike glances around the busy classroom. “So, I can go get the supplies, if you want, it looks pretty gnarly back there,” he offers. “And you can get us a table.”
El nods. “Okay.”
Mike gives her another small smile, and despite her desperate attempts to remain as laid-back as possible, she finds herself smiling back.
The two part ways. As El finds them a lab table, she can’t help but feel frustrated. Being closed-off from people is her form of protection. It keeps people like Troy from learning her vulnerabilities, and, she realizes as she glances down at her own hands, her strengths.
But Mike…
Mike undoes everything. Mike makes El want to smile and giggle and blush and act like a total knucklehead. She’s happy with being a loner, happy with being able to trust Max and Max alone. It’s safe, comfortable. Her feelings for Mike, on the other hand?
Completely terrifying.
Mike returns with a tray of goggles, gloves, forceps, pins, and a plastic container that smells an indescribable kind of terrible. The pungent odor makes El crinkle up her nose, and she looks up at Mike skeptically.
“Yeah, this thing totally reeks,” Mike gripes, passing her a pair of safety goggles.
“Totally,” El agrees, taking the goggles. Their fingers brush for the briefest of moments, and El feels her cheeks grow warm.
El tries not to stare as Mike slips on his safety goggles. The strap brushes against his hair and makes it floof up slightly.
Cute, cute, cute, cute.
They slip on some plastic gloves, line the tools up in a row, and remove the frog from the plastic container. El feels her stomach churn again as Mike lays the frog’s stiff, frozen body out on the tray.
Mike gets out their teacher’s Xeroxed lab instructions and reads them over quickly.
“Alright, so,” he begins, pushing up his sleeves and getting their tools out, “It looks like we have to identify the organs and fill out the diagram on this worksheet,” he turns to her, holding out the scalpel, “Do you want to do the cutting?”
El’s eyes widen. She glances at the scalpel, at Mike, and shakes her head quickly. “I’ll do the worksheet,” she offers, pulling the paper closer to her.
“Aww, you’re not scared, are you?” Mike teases. “It’s just a little frog.” He holds up the frog’s arm and makes it wave at her.
“No!” El tries to hold back both a giggle and cry of disgust, but instead gives off a strangled sort of snorting sound that only makes Mike smile even more.
El composes herself and gives him her best-annoyed look, “It’s gross.”
“It’s not THAT gross,” Mike replies, “I mean, it’s a little gross, but it’s also super cool! Like, we’re gonna get to see all his intestines and his liver and stuff!”
He’s definitely not wrong about that.
Once Mike cuts the frog open, they can see every last veiny, slimy, nasty organ inside. El keeps her eyes trained either on Mike or their worksheet, knowing that she won’t be able to last a minute if she has to keep looking at the poor frog.

As their classmates file out of the room, El goes back to her desk to get her things. Mike grabs his backpack and slowly makes his way over to the doorway but doesn’t leave, and it’s only when El notices the glances he keeps giving her that she realizes he’s stalling for her.
El holds back a smile as she makes her way towards the door, hoping Mike can’t tell that every step she takes towards him makes her heart flutter all the more.
“By the way,” Mike says as she approaches him and the two walk into the bustling hallway together, “How’d you solve my Rubik’s cube? I’ve been working on it forever.”
El shrugs, still a little unsure herself. “I just tried.”
“Seriously? I can’t believe you did it so fast! Like, you were amazing!”
Amazing? El glances up at him, eyes wide, and Mike suddenly looks alarmed.
“I mean, how fast you did it was amazing, not that you, personally, are amazing,” he quickly amends, “Not that you’re not amazing, though! You’re pretty cool, I guess. I mean, you seem cool, I know we’ve never really talked before or anything, but maybe — ”
“Mike!” Someone calls out.
El looks over to see Mike’s friends waiting at the end of the hall, huddle by his locker. Mike looks relieved for the interruption and immediately stops babbling.
“Well, I gotta go,” he instead says to El, giving her an apologetic look. “But maybe I’ll see you later?”
“Yeah,” El replies, trying not to sound too hopeful, and just like that, Mike is off.
“Why were you walking with HER?” El hears one of his friends — Dustin, she’s pretty sure — ask before the boys submerge into the rushing crowd of Hawkins High students, out of earshot.
As Mike disappears from view, El is suddenly left wondering if that was the conclusion to their story. Was that the last time they’d ever speak to each other? The last time he’d ever acknowledge that she existed? What did ‘maybe I’ll see you later,’ mean, anyway?
El looks down at her hands. She knows she’s different, powerful, dangerous — and yet, all she feels now is a delirious sort of weakness.
She’s turning into such a knucklehead. A blushing, embarrassingly love-sick knucklehead.
And yet…
She doesn’t completely hate it.
El crosses her fingers and desperately hopes that she won’t become invisible to him again.
