the girlfriends’ music tastes

I did this as a fun little thing / character development for the ladies, and thought I’d share with the class — what would be on the girlfriends’ playlists, if they lived in our world in 2024. featuring things that are in my Spotify library! I’m a woman of broad taste. contains a few very mild spoilers for chapters I haven’t yet posted but oh well 🤷🏻‍♀️ [~400 words]

Angel: calm vibes and girly pop. Lana Del Rey, Taylor, TVGirl, Billie Eilish, Sabrina Carpenter, and so on. also secretly fond of Garrick’s gym playlists (mild phonk and rap). he was shocked to learn that she knew all the words to some of those songs and would hum along to them.

Darling: R&B / sensual pop, because she’s an unbothered baddie and she knows it. Ari, Kali Uchis, Jhene Aiko, SZA, and the classic 90s ladies: Sade, Aaliyah, Lauryn Hill… she loves to turn it up and just groove to relax, and Bodhi loves watching her do her lil dances.

Duchess: 00s hits, because she’s an elder millennial, and they just don’t make music like they used to. a lot of Beyoncé — just not “single ladies”, because Brennan did in fact put a ring on it, and he was deeply offended the first time he heard her play it after they got married. 

Love: DGAF Pop. Icona Pop, Charli XCX, Dua Lipa, Brittney… things you can blast in the car and sing along to. and that entire subgenre of 90s/00s ladies singing about how men ain’t shit. Dain has learned not to take that personally.

Peach: country, but happy, fun country. lots of the famous ladies: Carrie, Miranda, Dolly, Shania, old Taylor… some top 40 pop in there, too. anything that makes her feel good. and slow, romantic songs too, so she can sway around in the kitchen with Sawyer while they’re making dinner. 

Spark: a delicate blend of 2010s emo + classic “dad rock”. this entire post was inspired by Joan Jett’s “bad reputation” coming on shuffle and me going SPARK SPARK SPARK. dipping into metal a little bit — some Metallica in there, AC/DC, Mötley Crue, Black Sabbath… 

Sunny: powerful vocals. ABBA, broadway musicals, and famous jazz ladies. sings along in the shower or doing dishes etc., and she’s actually hitting the right notes and in perfect harmony with the original recording. but she’ll vibe with whatever’s playing and find something nice to say about it — just loves having any music on.

Sweetheart: instrumentals and classical. — good for studying. loves those “Lo-Fi anime beats” videos on YouTube, and reading ambiance playlists for really getting into a fantasy novel. invested a good chunk of change into noise canceling headphones, so it can be just her and her music, no distractions.

I'm still figuring out Bun... I'll add her later, maybe :)

Meeting

(I didn't forget! The next of the Ridoc/Bodhi microfics. The previous one can be found here.)

For the next couple of days, Ridoc just watches him. Bodhi goes about his business, seemingly unaffected. He eats, goes to class, spars, flies…all of those things. Ridoc wants to know more though. 

When does he draw in his notebook? Why did he draw him?

A paper airplane flies gracefully toward their table at lunch. Rhiannon grabs it first and grins, elbowing Violet. 

“Looks like Ridoc has a secret admirer!” she squeals. Luckily the cafeteria is so loud that it doesn’t matter.

Ridoc’s cheeks heat as he grabs it from the women. 

R - Come find me later. 

Ridoc’s eyes flick toward Bodhi’s and they meet for a split second before lunch ends.

After dinner that night, Rhi takes Violet to the sparring gym to train. Ridoc waits outside the door. He watches Bodhi for a moment with his easy smile and his dark hair that looks impossibly soft. When he sees Ridoc, he says something to his friends and they leave.

They smile at each other awkwardly then Bodhi gestures to the door. “Come on.”

Ridoc follows and then they are outside, hidden by the darkening sky.

“Hi,” Ridoc says.

“Hi yourself,” Bodhi replies. Ridoc can see the swirls of his rebellion relic snaking around his arm and disappearing into his uniform top. He wants to touch it. “You keep staring at me. It’s distracting.”

“I would never want to…distract,” Ridoc says, closing the distance between them. 

“Then stop staring at me,” Bodhi replies, his voice low. 

“I can’t.” Ridoc gives in first, reaching out and running his thumb down Bodhi’s jawline. His eyes flutter closed, his lashes impossibly long.

“Gamlyn, I-” he starts but he doesn’t finish because Ridoc presses his lips against Bodhi’s. He startles but then relaxes and opens his lips to kiss him back.

2. What’s your total AO3 word count? 377,473 words

3. What fandoms do you write for? I have works for A Court of Thorns and Roses, Crescent City, and Throne of Glass, but these days, I primarily write for Fourth Wing

4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos? - The Underpants Heist: 332 - Sweet Waters of Spring: 236 - I Don't Feel Safe With You Anymore: 153 - A Tragedy of Fawns and Fate: 134 - Dear Brennan: 116 - Me, You, and My Roommate: 86 (honorable mention since SWOS is no longer available on AO3)

5. Do you respond to comments? Yes! It might not be right away but I will respond to them. Seriously comments make my day and I read them over and over again before I respond. I went through a period after I got sick where I didn't respond to comments and this is one of my only fandom regrets.

6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending? I Don't Feel Safe With You Anymore is my Post-Iron Flame Xaden POV fic. The ending is ambiguous and neither option is happy.

7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending? You, Me, and My Roommate is a threesome based on HOSAB where everyone finishes. I'd say that's a happy ending.

8. Do you get hate on fics? My SJM fics got hate on the r/acotar subreddit and now I don't go there anymore. Never on AO3 or tumblr

9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind? I do write smut! I primarily write M/M smut but I also write M/M/F threesomes and M/F smut. I am open to other combinations too, if the right story strikes. I usually write Porn with Plot rather than just smut for the sake of smut so I need compelling ideas first.

I'm most proud of the smut in Pink Pony Club. It's Fourth Wing fic but @suebswrites requested that I make it like the Court of Nightmares scene from ACOMAF

10. Do you write crossovers? Yes. I have two fics with Crescent City/ACOTAR crossovers and I am planning a crossover for The Empyrean and All For the Game thanks to @hoeelliexx. I just can't start it until I finish TUH.

14. What is your all-time favorite ship? Either Azris or Bodoc...Or Tristan Flynn x Me.

15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will? A Tragedy of Fawns and Fate. I recently revived this fic and published five new chapters so it's not impossible, but I won't make any promises. There's a lot of baggage with this fic because I was very sick while writing it and went through a very difficult time mentally as I struggled to cope with chronic illness. It just brings up a lot of feelings when I work on it

16. What are your writing strengths? I get comments on my dialogue and authenticity and those are both things that I'm really proud of in my writing.

17. What are your writing weaknesses? I get caught up in the dialogue and actions and forget to set the scene. I think this is because I don't need a lot fo details to generate a vivid image in my head so it's not a priority when I write. I think people are seeing what I'm seeing until my betas say "Hold up? Where the fuck are they right now?"

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic? I only read English so it can be difficult for me to follow fics with large amounts of untranslated dialogue. This is 100% a me problem though. I took Spanish for eight years and the best I can do is "Más cerveza por favor" and "¿Dónde está el baño?" I don't even drink so that first one is completely useless to me.

That being said, if you include context clues or translations for me, I'm golden. It can be a really fun way to add characterization to fics.

19. First fandom you wrote for? ACOTAR. I've written fics in my head before but it wasn't until I read ACOTAR that I started writing them down. I think I first published in 2022?

20. Favorite fic you’ve written?

Pink Pony Club. If you only read one of my fics, let it be this one. I put my entire heart into this one and I'm so stinking proud of it. This fic features Drag Queen Bodhi Durran and his journey to self-acceptance.

New audiobook: A Game of Kings, by Dorothy Dunnet

I don't think I'll go through the entire series because it delves a bit heavily into misery porn in the sequels but the first one is g r e a t.

Henry VIII is dead and currently there's a Big Concern in Scotland that their baby heir, Mary, doesn't get kidnapped and raised in London as a puppet of England (and various other issues with similar politics).

Another, possibly not as big but certainly colourful, concern is the return of Lymond, second son of a nobleman, who's famous for going to war at 16 (not that part, the fashion of the time etc. etc.) then blowing up a convent with his sister inside it and selling secrets to the English. Five years later he's back with a band of brigands and his first action is to raid his family castle and his mother's tea party for all the jewels of her guests. Would throw a knife at a woman... This is the hero.

If you like stories with dramatic, acerbic, tricksy, morally grey heroes who feel things possibly a little much and don't ever want you to know it, if you like family dynamics so thick you could cut them with a knife, if you like stories where there's always a hasty young man who really wants to fuck the lead and is perpetually angry that this isn't happening not that he w-wants that, if you like duels and japes at archery contests, if you're okay with the occasional foray into untranslated French or Latin poetry, if you're interested in that period of history told with verve and scene detail*, if you've ever wondered what Percy Whimsey would be like if he was Kinda Evil... I'd say go for it.

Though honestly, if I were this guy's older brother I'd be pissed off with him too.

(* While mostly the history seems pretty solid, people seem a little overly fond of dropping phrases like "under the Bodhi tree" which I suspect is mostly that it was written in the 60s. Eh. The book still slaps.)

Summary:

When Bodhi barged into Ridoc's room, Ridoc's drunk, mostly naked, and in the middle of a hookup and he can't help but wonder if maybe he needs to set some boundaries. Meanwhile, a history essay gives Ridoc some doubts about Navarre's border policies and a missive regarding poromish refugees rocks the quadrant. Ridoc finds himself frustrated - in more ways than one - and just needs to find release, even if it means taking matters into his own hands.

He felt naked and on display and yet he wanted this so badly that he couldn’t push Bodhi away. Self-preservation be damned. He knew it would hurt and he didn’t care. Not tonight. Ridoc breathed in deeply, holding the scent deep in his lungs, as Bodhi’s head drooped to his shoulder.  This feeling right here, he wanted to hold onto it. To commit it to his memory. Everything in him was warm and soft and satisfied. He couldn’t imagine there would ever be anything more, anything better than this. “Ridoc?” “Yeah, Bodhi?” Ridoc brushed the hair back from Bodhi’s forehead. “Thank you for being my friend.”
