Moth of the Week
Domestic Silk Moth
Bombyx mori
Tumblr media
The domestic silk moth is from the family Bombycidae. It is very closely related to the wild silk moth (Bombyx mandarina), which was first described in 1872 by Frederic Moore. The domestic silk moth was created through selective breeding in order to produce more silk and therefore lacks several behaviors of other moths.
Description This species has white hairy bodies, legs, and wings unlike the wild silk moth which is pigmented brown. This loss of color is due to the domesticated moths no longer needing camouflage. Additionally, this species wings form from larval imaginal disks, and although some may be able to hover, due to domestication the B. mori in incapable of prolonged flight as their bodies are too big to carry. This changes their mating behaviors.
Compared to the wild silk moth, the domesticated silk moth has increased cocoon size, body size, growth rate, and quicker digestion.
Wingspan Range: 3 – 5 cm (1.2 – 2.0 in)
Females are about 2 to 3 times the size of males to carry the eggs.
Diet and Habitat Silk moth larva or silkworms prefer to eat white mulberry leaves and other species of mulberries. They are also known to eat the leaves of the osage orange.
As domesticated species, these moths live in man made habitats for silk production.
It’s undomesticated relative the wild silk moth, B. mandarina, ranges from inland China to Korea and Japan.
Mating Since they cannot fly to find mates like the males of other silk moths species, the B. mori is completely dependent on humans for mating.
The eggs laid are put in and hatch in incubators after approximately 14 days.
Predators This species has no predators due to being taken care of by humans. They have also lost their camouflage, seen in the B. mandarina, from domestication.
Fun Fact Many Asian cultures such as Indian, Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese, and Thai eat silkworms. They are roasted, boiled, and/or packaged for snack sale. They have also been proposed as food for astronauts on long missions.

Bug of the Day
Was a weirdly quiet night at the lights the other night - hot all day, pre-storm, barometric pressure physically palpable, but then I found this big boi in a corner of my porch usually reserved for spiders (and things that the spiders have eaten). This is a spotted Apatelodes moth, Apatelodes torrefacta, and I have not seen one in my yard since 2018. Very cool. These moths used to be in the silkworm family (Bombycidae) but have been separated out into their own "American" silkmoth family, Apatelodidae.

hi robin !! realised we havent talked in a hot minute lmao :3
how've you been doing ? what've you been up to ? also special interest question !! what's your favourite thing about star trek and why ? can be anything - not strictly related to in-universe events (like i know that the practical effects are a big thing for you so yeah !!)
oH I ALSO GOT A NEW SPECIAL INTEREST !!!!! i still love hamilton the musical but sadly its just not. tickling my brain anymore; now it's entomology and insects SPECIFICALLY MOTHS AAAA i love moths so much my favourite is bombyx mori aka the domestic silk moth from the family bombycidae order lepidoptera cause. i mean have you SEEN them they're adorable (and interesting)
ELIIIII IVE MISSED YOU AGH THIS MADE ME HAPPY STIM SO HARD YOU HAVE NO IDEA
im ok! ish! things have been kinda up and down recently. having some health problems which is also causing some mental health problems but im doing my best to take care of myself in both cases so dont worry!
to answer your question, my favourite thing about star trek is the characters!! they all have so much depth and we spend a decent amount of time with each of them developing their personalities and backstories and relationships to each other. each individual has their own charm to them, not just the main characters. they all feel like People!! every time someone brings up a character you can't help but say "omg i love [character]!!" no matter who it is lmao
i do also love the special effects and especially the practical effects in star trek. theres something so endearing about watching jim fight a man in a full body rubber lizard suit or a dog wearing a costume to act as an alien lifeform

What's your favourite bug? If you like them
I LOVE (studying) BUGS !!! theyre adorable hehehe :3 my favourites at the moment would probably have to be domestic silk moths, otherwise known as mulberry silk moths or bombyx mori !! theyre flightless and mostly white/colourless unlike the other members of bombycidae (their genus) due to domestication since the ancient chinese empirical ages, and the process used to harvest their silk is called sericulture !! there's also a more ethical process for sericulture which is called ahimsa and allows the silk moth to escape the coccoon before it is boiled unlike traditional sericulture where the entire pupa is boiled to preserve the integrity of the silk strands (after the silk is harvested the moth pupa is typically eaten). also THEYRE SO CUTE AND FLUFFY !!!! theyre often confused with poodle moths, and the females often have a lot of trouble getting out of their cocoons without human intervention as their abdomens are too big due to the eggs they carry, and their spit which is filled with enzymes to break down the silk fibres to let them get out has weakened and decreased in strength so they can't make a big enough hole very often (when this happens they often lose some scales on the tops of their heads from trying to push their way out). a lot of the time as well you can tell if a moth is having trouble getting out of the cocoon if it is stained brown with their poop (they shit a lot) as well. also !! the whole family of bombycidae prefer plants from the family that figs, mulberry and the like, and bombyx mori prefers mulberry !!!!
urgh i could rant forever but i wont thank you so much dor asking ehehehehehehe >:3

Kinktober 2023 Day 25
Prompt: Dancing together (sfw)
Pairing: Astarion x nonbinary tiefling Tav
607 Words
🔞Adults Only Blog🔞
(this entry is safe for work though!)
"A package came for you, during the day." Weft hands him the small box. "Got your name on it and everything."
"Thank you, darling," Astarion says, and kisses them on the temple. The respond only by leaning into the touch, not saying a word. He rubs at their back, and hopes that what he ordered does the trick.
They're at Weft's family's country house. Nothing too grand, just a three-story box with space enough for the extended Bombycidae family to congregate every few years. Weft's parents had convinced the two of them to go, to get away from Baldur's Gate, after everything that happened. Weft had agreed, and while Astarion was glad they had, it had felt an uncharacteristic decision. He was sure they would want to stay in the city and help rebuild, but just as the death of the tadpoles had ended Astarion's time in the sun, something in Weft seemed to have gone out, too.
He opens the package and extracts a small polished wood box. He sets it on the table in front of Weft. "Open it."
"What is it?" they ask warily.
"Open it and find out."
They do, lifting the hinged lid, then looking up at him standing beside them.
"A sending stone?"
"A very special one."
He takes the stone from the box and when he does, music starts to play from it. A soft, lilting elvish song that puts a smile on Weft's face. He sets it on the table and offers them his hand. "May I have this dance?"
"Oh, darling. You may."
He pulls them from their seat and leads them into a dance. He twirls them around the kitchen, making their robe fly around them. They follow his lead perfectly, some old knowledge in their body coming to life. When the song ends, the two of them bow, as is proper. Weft grabs the stone from the table as it begins the next song.
"How does it work?"
"It's a sending stone attuned to another in Neverwinter. It will play the music they broadcast until you put it back in the box. See?" He returns it to the box and shuts the lid, then opens it again and hands it back to Weft.
"How marvelous," they say. They're smiling again.
Another song starts, a slow elvish ballad Astarion recognizes. He takes Weft in his arms again and spins them slowly. He loves this song. Gods, he'd nearly forgotten it. He lays his head on their chest and closes his eyes. He feels their chin land on top of his head and he pulls them closer.
"You know this one?" they ask.
"Hm? Oh yes. It's old." He sings a few lines of the chorus, softly, into their chest. It's slow. It's sad. It makes his chest ache in exactly the right way.
"What's it about?"
"Two lovers, of course." He dips them slightly and they let out a small laugh. "With everything ahead of them. Yet they're afraid of what may come, unless they have each other."
Weft stiffens slightly, and he searches their face. Sorrow. Fear. Guilt. He pulls them both standing and gives them a hard look.
"We will have a life. A beautiful, broken life, but it will be ours." He swallows. "For as long as we both live."
Weft nods, and takes his face in both their hands. "I will find a way to live longer. I swear to you."
He shakes his head, and places a hand over theirs. "However long. I won't let a single second with you go to waste." And he kisses them.

I'm down for character designs. I expect symbolism (possibly pictures if at all possible)
Tell me which moth/moths u chose and why. Please n thank u
Oh I have so much symbolism, but the moths.
So when deciding on a moth species to have Drury spliced with, originally I wanted to pick a moth from the family Bombycidae, also called silkworm moths, but after a lot of consideration I leaned a bit closer to Saturniidae, particularly the subfamily Saturniinae, also called giant silkmoths.
Drury's always been pretty heavily associated with giant silkmoths in my work. My choice for his birthplace and heritage are directly linked to one of the largest moths on Earth: the Atlas Moth.
That said, when deciding the moth species in specific, I wanted to pick a species first documented by one of his namesakes, either Dru Drury or Francis Walker. As a result, I settled on Samia cynthia, also called the ailanthus silkmoth, which was documented by Dru Drury in 1773.
Tumblr media
a lot of his tattoos include moths too, including moon moths, imperial moths, and of course giant silkmoths.
