Ok but which old detective novels were you reading! I'm intrigued
so i actually have become desperately obsessed with old detective novels every january for the last five years or so for reasons that remain opaque to me. as such i have a giant list with much rereading but i can take you through some highlights. nearly all of these are british and most are pre-1960 or so.
2019ish i read every dorothy sayers novel in a frantic rush and got my vocal mannerisms stuck in "depressed effeminate 1920s aristocrat" for like a week. i reread these periodically so imagine them kind of sprinkled in recurring amongst all subsequent years.
2022 i read all four sarah caudwell "lawyers and a medieval law professor solve tax-related murders" novels (highly recommended), then six josephine tey detective novels (recommend brat farrar and miss pym disposes, also recommend the daughter of time but with the caveat that i think it hits way better if you are in fact a british person who had what i believe to be the typical british history education about the kings of england, which i am not; do NOT reocmmend a shilling for candles or the franchise affair). also several ngaio marsh books which slid through my brain leaving not a ripple nor a memory.
january 2024 i read the vast majority of ellis peters' work; the brother cadfael '12th-century monk detective' books fucking rule and i highly recommend them. her mystery novels set in then-contemporary midcentury england have some highlights but are overall mixed in quality.
this past january and i think also in 2023 i read a bunch of dick francis books, which are horse-themed financial thriller mysteries. weirdly good given that 1. that sounds insanely bad when you say it like that 2. he wrote like 40 of them and in the process explored the full range of imaginable horse-related financial thriller mystery plots and also some that cannot be imagined.
all years after 2019 not mentioned i don't have records so i probably just reread a lot of agatha christie novels. unfortunately despite everything they are honestly really well-written. at least if you like that kind of thing. which i, empirically, do.
#agatha christie appears to be popular because she was good at writing. i'm afraid.#i hope this is the kind of information you were looking for.#box opener#bookbox

⋆˙⊹ 𝙻𝚒𝚎𝚜 𝚊𝚗𝚍 𝚆𝚎𝚍𝚍𝚒𝚗𝚐𝚜 𝚋𝚘𝚘𝚔𝚖𝚊𝚒𝚕 𝚞𝚗𝚋𝚘𝚡𝚒𝚗𝚐 ⋆˙⊹

I received a surprise email regarding this bookmail, but I thought it would be in 2 weeks at most, but it arrived a few days after the email was sent. Nevertheless, I was really excited and decided to film a reel.
I'm not really good with reel videos, but I'm just so excited to show and post this unvoxing right away 😆
The box contains a lot of extra gifts, such as fans, cute shades, nameplates, a bookmark, a book card, and of course my favourite, the book itself. I didn't expect the book to be this BIG, but it was so PRETTY ♡
Read the e-arc last month, it was full of drama, rated it 4⭐️. If you're interested in my review, you can find it on my profile, I posted a review last month, so check it out ♡

Threads That Bind ★ ★ ★ ★ ★
Let me preface this review by saying that I've needed a break from Greek mythology and retellings. Yet I couldn't deny the pull of Threads That Bind, and I am SO GLAD I listened. This novel may be a Greek retelling, but it is very much its own tale, too.
Okay, I'll admit that part of my love probably has to do with a lifelong fascination with threads of fate. That primed me to love this story; there's no point in denying that fact. Still, Threads That Bind held up to the promise it made.
Io's story is intriguing and complex. We have her ability to see (and alter) fates. We have her career (which utilizes said ability). But there's more – her family dynamics (complex would be the kindest way to describe that), her fate thread, and (of course) the overall politics of the city. It's a lot to take in. Frankly, I couldn't get enough of it.
The finale of Threads That Bind is a bit of a cliffhanger, so you better believe I'm counting down the days for the next novel to release (no information that I could find on that, sadly).
Highlights: Greek Mythology Young Adult Fantasy Romantic Subplot Fates that Tie and Bind Private Detective Protagonist

read piranesi and honestly feel really cheated that no one warned me it was short
#'short' here being 'a normal length book' but yk. i was unconsciously calibrating on jsmn#and accordingly didn't expect to burn through it in one idle morning + one leg of a red line trip#very fun though.#i was totally right when i gave it to three different people as a gift and effusive recommendation without having read it yet.#box opener#bookbox
