SUBLIME CINEMA #670 - CARRIE

DePalma's Carrie is one of the greatest horror films of all time, less so because of the shocks (although there are some great ones) and more because it's so well crafted and acted. It holds up.

There was maybe an over-eagerness to impress with fancy cinematographic trickery - lots of lens attachments, lots of slow motion, split screen, diffusers, split field diopters.. Even a bloody kaleidoscope filter. This could be a result of wanting to create a stylishness despite serious budget constraints, or the director's penchant for A/V maximalism. Of all of these tricks, it was the split field diopter that dePalma deployed most often during his career.

Watching it again recently, it seems clear that Tarantino's Inglorious Basterds lifted a page from this film's fiery ending.

One of my favourite movies.

A real masterpiece. Just out of a 40th anniversary screening at the cinema and enjoyed it just as much as the first i saw it twenty years ago. Endlessly rewatchable. One of the greatest soundtracks/scores ever. Classic tracks like "Push it to the Limit' and an amazing theme by Giorgio Moroder. Great cast with a brilliant and slightly insane performance by Al Pacino. Iconic sass from Michelle Pfeiffer. A great turn from Steven Bauer as Manny. Also several memorable smaller roles lilke Sosa and Omar. Great dialogue. Flies in despite being nearly three hours. So many good quotes. An excellent rise and fall story that leads to an explosive and electrifying finale. The scene where he first goes to visit his mum always makes me sad. Id love one of those tigers.
