More hot design pedagogy news! 'Taking a Line for a Walk: Assignments in Design Education' is back in stock from @spectorbooks Assignments can give instructions, describe an exercise, present a problem, set out rules, propose a game, stimulate a process, or simply throw out questions. 'Taking a Line for a Walk' brings attention to something that is often neglected: the assignment as a pedagogical element and verbal artefact of design education. This book is a compendium of 224 assignments, edited by @paimnina and coedited by @emiliabergmark A reference book for educators, researchers, and students alike, it includes both contemporary and historical examples and offers a space for different lines of design pedagogy to converge and converse. An accompanying essay by Corinne Gisel takes a closer look at the various forms assignments can take and the educational contexts they exist within. 'Taking a Line for a Walk' derived from an exhibition of the same name at the International Biennial of Graphic Design Brno 2014. Assignments include: Drawing the story of Adam and Eve using only close-ups of hands; Designing and making a boxed printing kit; Type gymnastics; Developing an elevator pitch; Designing stationery for your own graphic design office; Staging and documenting a mock crime scene… and many more! #takingalineforawalk #designpedagogy #designassignments #designthinking #design https://www.instagram.com/p/CTAaI1JF7OE/?utm_medium=tumblr

27th Brno Biennial Catalogue⁣ Available at www.draw-down.com ⁣ ⁣ Designed by #TomasCelizna #AdamMacháček and #RadimPeško / The 344 page catalogue for the 27th Brno Biennial examines the key phenomena of contemporary graphic design and visual communication. Is it possible to describe new things with old words? This edition responds to the metamorphoses and the state of contemporary graphic design: its multitude, variety, vagueness and apparent superficiality. Its ambition is to elucidate—both on the general and subjective levels—the phenomena which define or influence contemporary visual culture. The Brno Biennial was established in 1963, and is considered the oldest exhibition of graphic design in the world. The catalogue presents texts by Åbäke, David Bennewith, Rachel Berger, Emilia Bergmark, Andrew Blauvelt, Sulki & Min Choi, Jean-Marie Courant, Linda Dostálková, #ExperimentalJetset Kurt Finsten, Chris Fitzpatrick, Roland Früh, Paul Gangloff, Tetsuya Goto, Catherine Ince, Emily King, James Langdon, #SheilaLevrantdeBretteville Hélène Meisel & officeabc, #DanMichaelson #JonSueda #MartaSylvestrová Frantisek Štorm, #LindavanDeursen and the curators and authors of the exhibitions spotlighted during the Biennial. Includes an interview with Czech designer Jiří Hadlač, co-founder of the Brno Biennial; photographic documentation and description of the winning entries in the graphic design competition; plus book selections and commentaries by a host of international graphic designers. During the 27th Brno Biennial, the Design Displacement Group re-appropriates the narrative format of the opera. The four grand themes of this opera (and any other tragedy) being love, jealousy, ambition and revenge are the basis of our story exploring the theatrics and performative requirements of a design practice. These narratives unfold through an immersive audio-visual presentation depicting scenes rich with intrigue, gossip and speculation.
