sam seeing iwtv online discourse back in season 1 and stepping away from it after that is the smartest thing he could have done. i don't think people, especially ones who just joined the fandom, realize how bad it was. it wasn't just toxic discourse about the character he's playing and the show, it was people projecting their hate of a character ONTO him and actively saying gross bullshit about his relationships with jacob and bailey. people saying jacob and bailey should leave the show for their own good because it was clear to them that they didn't like him or that he made them uncomfortable. i hope that at the very least he didn't see that part of fandom because i can't imagine seeing people speculate about how your co-stars actually hate you would make you feel.

even now there are people take everything he says in bad faith regarding lestat because him being a fan of the books and the character he's playing somehow means he's an abuse apologist when he's only ever been extremely thoughtful about the themes of abuse on the show.

by all means call out the fans who are racist and ignorant and who don't treat lestat being an abuser seriously. they absolutely deserve calling out. but there are clearly other people in the fandom who just enjoy constantly moralizing and lecturing anyone because another person dares to like a fictional character or ship that they don't like. and since the show has consistently doubled down that the show is, at the end of the day, a love story about louis/lestat, a lot of the same people have decided they're going to move onto doing their moralizing onto the actors instead. which is how you get people digging into sam reid's personal family history because oh him being off social media and chronically offline MUST mean something else is up with him. like, no. he's just smart and realizes engaging with you nerds is a waste of time lol.

Maybe this is a controversial opinion, but its one that I've been reminded of in the few weeks since things have escalated so severely in Israel and Palestine-- I feel like the pressure for random, average individuals online to be vocally political is not only entitled and uncomfortable, but also just an example of misplaced priority.

Like, I have people on twitter right now that are flat out saying if you don't talk extensively about I/P you're truly, irredeemably evil. I've had mutuals say that silence means you're complacent in genocide, that you have blood on your hands (exact words). But it just doesn't make sense? Most of the people who I've seen being flat out harassed for being silent are teenagers who don't have money to donate, working class folks who don't have time to spare, and normal people who just don't have enough of a following online to even spread any word effectively. Of course, the ones doing the harassing are also poor/busy/not-popular, but they don't see the irony. (I've also seen them say that talking about war constantly is taking a toll on their mental health, saying they've cried, had nightmares, panic attacks, etc...but they also say that taking a mental health break from social media is "selfish" and genocidal, so.)

The whole interaction leaves me with so many questions. If stepping away from social media because politics are stressing you out (which they are known to do), are you obligated to use social media? Do you have to use twitter to be a good person? What does that say about people who can't afford a phone, or live in a country where it isn't quite possible? (Are homeless folks inherently genocidal, or is that an "obvious" exception that was never clarified because no one uses nuance anymore?) If you have to talk about world events, lest you side with the oppressor, at what point is something so catastrophic you *must* talk about it? Is there a number of lives lost that is low enough you can get away with being quiet, and a certain amount too high that you're obligated to talk about it? Is it your duty to have the news on 24/7 to make sure you don't miss anything and catch all the global disasters as they happen? How much do you have to talk about something for it to be considered "enough"? Is there a quota??

It just feels like a lot of people are acting as if people who aren't chronically online aren't 1. doing any activism, because the only important activism is social media networking (sarcasm), or 2. are inherently bad people for *not* spending 6 hours a day on their phones. Like, I had someone I thought was a friend say I was a bad person because I was trying to cut down my social media usage, because the timing was "too convenient"... as if that's a normal thing to say to someone, ever. Sorry if I went on a little bit of a rant, it wasn't my intention. I dunno, maybe it's just me; I've seen a lot of people saying this sort of stuff so maybe they are the majority. It just feels really weird to let people that are addicted to social media take charge of who online is "good" or "bad" based off their internet usage. As if we were all catholics or something. If I were to say that current takes on morality were very catholic-seeming, would you know what I mean?

As recently noted, I am myself on an embargo from answering asks related to this topic. I will make one exception because this is important. I have said it before, but it bears saying again: thinking that the only way to Do Activism is to be constantly on social media and immersing yourself in terrible things nonstop and then posting the Most Correct Opinions (and then viciously attacking anyone who is even slightly Not As Correct as you) is absolutely bullshit. If you're engaging with this content so much that it's giving you a mental breakdown or otherwise plunging you into a spiral of anxiety that you take out on other people who are just as far removed from actually doing anything about it as you: why? Do you really think that you and you alone, one random person on the Internet, are the only way anyone else is going to find out about these things? Or do you think you have to perform the Most Correct Opinions nonstop, viciously harass anyone who isn't responding in exactly the same way, and this is the sum total of what your response should be? Especially in a situation as bloody and complicated as this, dealing with reams of religious, social, cultural, and political history where the average commentator on this conflict knows only what's been fed to them by propaganda on TikTok? How the fuck is that useful or constructive for anyone, aside from perpetuating the idea that you have to be angry all the time on social media about things you essentially know nothing about? I can't see that it does.

What's happening to the Gazans right now is no qualification or equivocation, a genocide. It should rightfully be opposed and called what it is. But unfortunately, I have spent too much time around Western Online Leftists to believe they actually care a whit about stopping genocide as a fundamental principle, and only want to be seen to loudly care about what their Ideology has told them to care about. If it means hand-waving aside genocide and atrocities when committed by their preferred polities, so be it. Why haven't these same people been wall-to-wall up in arms about what Russia has been doing in Ukraine, or for God's sake Syria for the past ten years, if they're really concerned about the rights of innocent Muslim civilians attacked by a far-right imperialist power? Why not the Uighurs in China? Why not [insert the blank] of all the terrible things happening in the world as a result of far-right fascist genocidal imperialism? Why only this conflict? Why now? Why does it involve so much excusing of terrorism as long as it's committed for the Right Ideology? Why are some of the most loudly pro-Palestinian accounts on here also the most rabidly pro-Russian? How does that make sense? To put it bluntly, those genocides are being committed by nation-states that Online Leftists like for being "anti-Western," and therefore their activities are actually fine and should even need to be defended.

My point is not to say that what's happening to the Palestinians is not bad. It is. It is awful and inexcusable. However, I seriously doubt the motives and morality of those who are being the loudest about screaming on social media and attacking everyone else for not instantly repeating their views. I seriously doubt that the Online Left actually opposes genocide and accelerationism as fundamental principles, because they proudly demonstrate every day that they don't. Until those vast factors can be dismantled and shown for what they are, and this can be placed into its larger context, I don't buy it and I don't believe this wall-to-wall social media outrage factory is actually aimed at helping the Gazans or anyone else suffering the most as a result of this. It is just to show that they can be counted on to Perform Outrage and harass anyone else who doesn't do the same, and that does nothing for anyone whatsoever.

I really can't say enough how much I appreciate twst revealing Idia's chronically online behavior to actually be the result of Serious Trauma as well as a very real significant obstacle holding him back from just going out into the world and socializing.

Like, yeah, he could technically try harder, and with a combination of enough support patience and brute force (it's nrc after all) he does manage to do more and benefits from it, but it still shows without saying that trauma is genuinely disabling in so many ways, as well as representing how any other disability, physical or mental, which makes going out or interacting with other people in person difficult will leave people dependent on whatever alternatives are available, which is usually internet and fiction.

And yeah, his bullshit can be toxic, but mostly it's just irritating to people who have already stigmatized all of his attempts at experiencing and engaging with the world, which leads to him growing more isolated and unsociable as he's probably spent years in a spiral of shrinking social circles even online. And he's actually shown to be more empathetic and even emotionally intelligent than most of his peers, but actually expressing it appropriately is a challenge that he usually fails, due to lack of social skills, because he's never given the chance to form them.

idk where exactly I'm going with this now. It's just, twst's whole thing is not fixing issues, it's showing that they exist, and people live with them, and it's caused by damage outside of their control, and it's compounded and perpetuated by social stigmas and lack of empathy. And I think Idia's whole storyline is an excellent showcase of the difference between incel culture and people who have just been ousted from society by life circumstances.

Domon ate the spider because Kyoji didnt not have nearly enough chances to teach Domon to be weary of this exact kind of siblingeque horseshit, and we know from how he responds to Master Asia that Domon will just do things that you tell him to. He admits it, begrudgingly, because everybody wants to know why he bailed on them for several hours.

Sai has probably also showed everyone the meme where people would edit a pregnancy test into various pictures.

While the rest of his family worked really hard to earn these titles and support, Max had barely done anything at all. He, anointed and appointed as ‘America’s Sweetheart, by the people themselves, just needed to be himself. A sweetheart. 

It wasn’t the press the gave him the name. Max’s target demographic is Gen Z and the name turned into a thing shortly after someone random person on TikTok made an edit of him to Miss Americana & The Heartbreak Prince. 

He’s fine it. Honestly, it’s much better than being called America’s Future. Yikes. 

Since Max’s key demographic is chronically online and would rather die than go out, much of the work he does is also online. This means he needs to have a consistent social media presence and do the allocated number of livestreams every week and meet the expected number of social media reach every day. 

It’s a little exhausting. But it’s nothing compared to what Rafael does, which is to do real work in the real world.

if we're being entirely honest, I think people in the modern age - especially twitter users - actively seek out reasons to be upset. they crave drama like bees crave honey. especially when it comes to ashton tbh. the man can't breathe right without people claiming he's being problematic so I don't put a lot of stock in general in anyone's opinions of him but my own, especially bc I'm in fandom for my own enjoyment, not for anyone else's !! so it doesn't much matter to me what they think of him. i don't value their opinions!

if you'll notice, fandom is a lot about curating your own special little bubble and here on tumblr, literally no one is talking shit about ashton that i follow. it's literally just on twitter that I've seen any hate because twitter is a cesspool filled with chronically online social justice warrior bullshit :) and there's a reason I'm not on there often.

as for the actual reason ashton's getting hate right now, i don't personally think it's as big a deal as people pretend it is. and this is getting into my own personal perspectives of things and please feel free to disagree with me on this because i know it's a Hot Take, but i can believe and support victims while simultaneously thinking that anonymous twitter allegations are mostly bullshit.

all allegations against All Time Low were entirely anonymous from a twitter user with no evidence/support/timeline (and, yeah, a random user said there were "97 allegations" but when people asked where she got that number from, she literally admitted she made it up and deactivated her account. but that didn't stop people from just fucking running with the number) and when ATL threatened to press charges for defamation, all of a sudden this anon user disappeared with no further comment. but twitter went wild - as it often does - and completely exaggerated all the actual information given.

twitter spreads misinformation like a disease. that's just the truth. and im certainly not saying all allegations that originate on twitter are fake because they aren't but i am saying that people online need to support victims at the same time that they actually start thinking critically about things. twitter acts like it's "guilty until proven innocent" instead of the other way around.

that being said, i don't personally support ATL because i didn't listen to their music before so this doesn't affect me and - if there is the chance they're abusers, i don't really want to listen to them. But that doesn't mean i tell people to turn them off if they like them or something, or tell them to stop being fans. because it doesn't affect me and i, frankly, just don't care. people need to learn that supporting the artist and supporting the art are two totally different things. you can listen to a song you like without knowing every allegation the artist has ever faced. also, if we stopped listening to every song made by a problematic artist, I'm afraid there would be very little music left.

that's where this brings me to the fact that people are throwing around insane accusations like that ashton supports rapists which is a fucking insane thing to say about a) people who arent even confirmed/charged rapists and b) over the fact he literally just played a song by them? he was DJ-ing for an emo/pop punk night? people would have been shocked if he hadn't played All Time Low??

also, I'm sorry but are you going to boycott every single person and establishment that plays one of the biggest pop-punk bands ever?? if you walk into a store and hear it playing All Time Low, will you never shop there again?? where is the line drawn?

and finally, the whole thing pisses me off because people use it as an excuse to say that they stand with victims and that ashton is actively harming victims by playing All Time Low when, I'm sorry, but no the fuck he's not ?? and, in my opinion, this is actually does MORE harm to victims than it does good? it's all just performative crap to make yourself look "woke".

and, excuse me, but what have you actually done to genuinely fucking support victims other than tell some random rich man who you don't fucking know that he should kill himself for DJing at an emo night?? using all this time to "cancel" Ashton Irwin's privileged cishet male ass could have been spent actually raising awareness about rape or helping actual real life fucking people in your community? this level of vitriol doesn't help anyone. it's pathetic.

Dude I used to be soooo into mcyt and dsmp, it was probably my longest and biggest hyperfixation to date. Wilbur Soot was one of my favorites and I also really like LoveJoy. Not anymore though. Fuck William Gold. Fuck abusers. His apology was SUCH bullshit it actually pissed me off. Scrolling through Twitter only annoys me more becuase there are SO MANY chronically online people who think this is just some little drama, or are downplaying what happened to defend Wilbur. Grow up. Hey Siren, sorry for the rant in advance but i have no idea where else to go or what to do. I have a trans identified friend, and i really want to help her see things for what they are. It's really obvious she's just an AAP/AHE fujoshi and experiences pretty severe dissociation from her body, and regardless of all the things we disagree on, i just want to help her because i know she's a nice and sensible person deep down. She has a very enabling friend group where everyone else is tif a too and she's stuck in this shitty echo chamber where everyone gets blindly validated for the most chronically online bullshit and i just really want to help her somehow. If i tell her straight up she's not trans and her fetish is just warping her world view she will most definitely hate me. She is very stereotypically feminine, looks and "acts" very hyper feminine, she has this "shut up and obey" midset and is a people pleaser so i suspect that might play into things as well. Sorry if i'm wasting your time but i'm seeing her deteriorate in real time and i don't know what to do, i don't even know if i can help her somehow but i'm just so concerned. Thanks for reading.

I think in cases like this, the most important thing is perspective. A lot of people do explore being transgender, and if it's just a social transition right now (pronouns and new clothes), I would keep an eye on it, but not panic. After all, a lot of people identify as trans, but don't take steps beyond the basic cosmetic, and then identify back out of it.

My number one suggestion is to try and get her to live in her body, and to resolve the mind/body/soul division (such as that she's really a boy and her body is a mismatch). You can try to arrange for physical, real life activities (hiking, walking, pottery classes, etc). I would also gently challenge her by feigning ignorance, but bringing up articles or posts that might go against the mantras she knows.

For example, you can ask her to explain gender identity to you, and explain that you don't really get it still; ask for more detail, and point out that it sounds like she's just describing personality. Isn't gender supposed to be made of stereotypes anyway? Whats the need for being trans when she could still be a woman who likes x,y,z?

Or even better, don't approach gender just yet. Focus on bringing her attention to misogyny, and how it affects your day to day life. I do have a video on how to bring up gender critical arguments in an effective way that might be useful.

Alright, I said I wasn't going to do this but I am over it and want to share my side of things so I don't have to again. Rant below.

It's come to my attention that a former RP partner of mine has been spreading lies about me and my character. She has told multiple circles that I am abusive, a gaslighter, and a manipulator without providing any proof of this information. I met this partner in March 2023 and we talked until February 2024. During this time, she smothered me and my character so much that I didn't really want to write anymore. I was afraid that if I posted online at all, she would notice and make some comment or see why I wasn't replying to our threads. I did point out to her that I didn't like all the recognition but it took me a long time to realize that I was unhappy on this platform because she tried to take all my time and attention. I dreaded being on here or on discord. I started to distance myself as I didn't enjoy my interactions but I felt like I needed to stick around as a friend because she was often sick and complaining to me about her chronic illness. This made me feel like I couldn't abandon her as she often seemed very lonely and I did feel bad that she was stuck inside because of the illness. I realize now that she used this more as a manipulation to likely keep me around and it worked until I couldn't deal with the constant messages, reblogs, ship posts, videos, whatever it was. I told her I no longer wanted to speak about anything that wasn't writing and that she needed to stop making me her sounding board for everything going on in her life.

She did not like the fact that I said no more to her and blocked me without any explantion. She then went around to multiple people that I do not know and accused me of being an abuser. I was far from that, I was a friend that listened and tried my best to be there for her when she needed it. I could not say the same about her. We knew each other for almost 11 months and she barely asked anything about me. When I told her I think I need to put my 17 year old cat down, all she said was "at least she had a good life" and then continued onto her own narcissistic spiral that was all about herself. Even when I told her I don't want to talk anymore about anything that isn't writing as I felt like we didn't have much of a friendship, she countered with "what do you mean? I just asked you about your job LAST WEEK." Mind you, we had known each other for 11 months and that was all she could come up with that she asked me about. Not how I was doing, how my life was going, not what kind of plans I had for the weekend, it was just one question she asked me a week before while she constantly trauma dumped and talked about herself to me.

Now, I blocked her and she blocked me in February and I wouldn't be bringing this all up if people didn't keep messaging me saying that this person has told them multiple lies about me and even claimed that she interacted with their characters just so I would see it and feel some type of way about it. She even began to write her own Derek, which is fine, I do not gatekeep Derek at all, but she wrote him purposely with someone I write with and tried to rub it in my face that her Derek was interacting with this person's characters. She would be sad to know that I never noticed as I rarely go on the dash and at that point I was dealing with my cat and could care less about Tumblr or what she was doing on it.

With all this information I would also like to say that this person is known for changing blogs often and this is because she gets in drama a lot on this site and needs to go into hiding and change her partners up so that they don't find out about her bullshit. She has taken characters, ideas, partners, and has collected faceclaims. She has also recently blocked a lot of her RP partners without any explanation why. She used to complain to me about people stealing her ideas or her characters but in reflection about all this I realize that it was her that stole most of the faceclaims and plotpoints she wanted to write. Her behavior since February has not changed, she's still a self absorbed, chronically online person who likes to create drama in every relationship she has. She does not care about you unless she can use you and she will manipulate you to think that you are the only person she will ever want to write with. You aren't. Just remember how many people she's lied to, hurt, and blocked and how many new blogs she needed so she could hide and write with people who know nothing about her yet.

That being said, I have had this blog over 10 years. I have not had any drama on this blog and I have not done anything that has made me need to hide myself as I genuinely believe in not having drama on here and keeping this website as fun as it can be. I have not abused anyone in my life and I do believe I'm a nice person that's willing to be a listening ear if you need it. I understand that a lot of you have gone through terrible things with her as well which I am truly sorry that you were put through all that and that I believed her when she said a lot of you were stealing her characters and ideas. I wish I had seen the red flags then so I wouldn't be needing to write this long post explaining everything. I do believe it's best to move on and just forget about said person as they thrive on attention which is why after this post I will not be making anymore about her. If you need to talk, feel free to DM me, other than that this chapter and drama is closed for me.

The day the news breaks is almost as dramatic as the cheating scandal. Kyle’s Twitter mentions are blowing up, and he knows the last few episodes of Fireside Chats have been relatively tame, so he assumes someone dug something up again. Or Cartman did something drastic overnight. At a glance, many of the tweets were accusing Kyle of having horrible friends or being a horrible person by association. Must be Cartman. Any actual listener of Fireside would know that they aren’t really friends, but whatever.

Kyle checks his text messages. Cartman hadn’t sent anything, which nearly ruled him out altogether. He was an attention whore. He would not do something and go silent. Nothing from Stan, either, who was no stranger to controversy. It was all accidental. Just people who were chronically online having bad opinions and too much time.

Instagram is up next. As soon as the app loads, the mystery is solved. The first post on screen, large and attention-grabbing, is Kenny at an Insane Clown Posse concert. His face is painted in black and white clown makeup. His hands are thrown up in some inane sign. He looks fucking ridiculous. He swipes through all ten photos. Thank God no videos. Kyle would lose brain cells listening to ICP. There are two more pictures from the concert, four pictures of him pulling stupid stunts shirtless, and one of him and Butters. The final two are also him and Butters, now with gray smears of face paint on both of their mouths. Gross. The caption includes something about how Kenny declared himself a juggalo.

So the situation wasn't that bad. It was just Twitter doing its thing, this already scandalous celeb just posted something questionable, better go harass anyone who has ever spoken to him. Cartman would make a joke of it all in the next episode. Call Kenny out for poor, stupid, white trash bullshit. The real horror started in the group chat. The Instagram pictures were just the tip of what actually transpired. Nothing was left to the imagination, and the thread of messages started at 7:51 were consistent and vicious. 

People were only mildly upset about the juggalo claim. The reputation wasn't great, but not many Fireside fans were deeply familiar with the subculture. It had everything to do with the fact that Kenny and Butters were back on the street. As if they were ever actually off. Their audience couldn't handle half of what happened behind the scenes.

I'm going to try to say this without sounding condescending. But every time I see someone coming into the critical/anti tag to defend LO, specifically the gross maturity/power difference and it's implications, the blog is almost always run by a child. Like, their bio will say 14 or 15, or you can just tell that whoever wrote it is either an actual child or very immature adult. I think it's a testament to the fact that LO very quickly falls apart with any real scrutiny that someone who is immature/young and inexperienced won't apply. And it's also disheartening, because the comic is obviously appealing to a very young audience (mostly young girls), so while an adult with maturity and worldly experience will be able to discern "hey, even though this story is trying to paint such a gap in age and power as something both healthy and romantic, this isn't okay in reality", a child probably won't. It makes me angry with RS and honestly a little sad when I see a comment from a young girl saying that Hades is "goals" or that "Persephone is an adult so it's a-okay". I just have to hope that they have other influences, so if a predatory person comes around trying to be "their Hades", they won't think it's okay.

Not condescending, but definitely concerning. And I say this as someone who's been chronically online since age 14, sometimes the adults around you do have a point when they say "be careful on the Internet". It's not meant to be condescending, it's not meant to be putting anyone down for their age, it's just the reality - there are a lot of shitty things advertised to younger audiences that really shouldn't be consumed by younger audiences. Especially when it comes to things that are easily internalized (like romance, relationship dynamics, etc.)

It's why I've gone on about how LO is basically morally bankrupt at this point, along with many other comics in the romance genre on Webtoons - so many of them are problematic, promote unhealthy relationship dynamics, put a lot of emphasis on normalizing otherwise shitty people and attitudes, and outright objectify women in a very fetishizing if not often sexist way.

Unfortunately WT has figured out that these sorts of stories sell to their main demographic - because their main demographic are made up of literal children who don't know better, and emotionally immature adults who never LEARNED better. It's not a problem that's exclusive to romance webtoons, nor is it one that's solely on RS' shoulders, but it's definitely one Webtoons and RS themselves have capitalized on in a very manipulative way.

It also doesn't help that when you go back far enough in RS' art history, you can see there's a very obvious pattern of her fetishizing innocence and youthfulness, particularly in girls and "little girl" relationship roles (see: she read Lolita and clearly completely missed the point of what it was trying to say). Not enough for me to outright call her a p*dophile, but still enough to make me raise some eyebrows and wonder why she hasn't been called out for it in a more extreme way. I guarantee you if a man were writing this comic, it would have been crucified for its bullshit years ago. Her being a woman doesn't mean her work is automatically less prone to sexism or misogyny or the male gaze than what it would be if the genders were reversed. And I say that as an AFAB creator.

TL ; DR: no, I'm not surprised in the slightest that most of the people defending all the weird and gross infantilization and fetishization crap in LO are literally children. They don't know better, and it's technically not their job to know better because they're children, it's the responsibility of creators like RS to look at themselves in the mirror and ask themselves what the actual fuck they're doing. Unfortunately if the creator herself has internalized and normalized creepy and gross relationship "goals" like this for herself, she's not gonna see the glaring issues in peddling it to children.
