What Russia can't win on the battlefield it will try to accomplish with disinformation, propaganda, and plain old bribery.
A Russian cabal operated a propaganda site masquerading as a news site called the Voice of Europe. In addition to publishing items designed to undermine confidence in various European governments, it outright made payoffs to various EU politicians.
Investigators claimed it used the popular Voice of Europe website as a vehicle to pay politicians. The Czech Republic and Poland said the network aimed to influence European politics. Voice of Europe did not respond to the BBC's request for comment. Czech media, citing intelligence sources, reported that politicians from Germany, France, Poland, Belgium, the Netherlands and Hungary were paid by Voice of Europe in order to influence upcoming elections for the European Parliament. The German newspaper Der Spiegel said the money was either handed over in cash in covert meetings in Prague or through cryptocurrency exchanges. Pro-Russian Ukrainian oligarch Viktor Medvedchuk is alleged by the Czech Republic to be behind the network. Mr Medvedchuk was arrested in Ukraine soon after the Russian invasion, but later transferred to Russia with about 50 prisoners of war in exchange for 215 Ukrainians. ' Czech authorities also named Artyom Marchevsky, alleging he managed the day-to-day business of the website. Both men were sanctioned by Czech authorities. Poland's intelligence agency said it had conducted searches in the Warsaw and Tychy regions and seized €48,500 (£41,500) and $36,000 (£28,500).
"Money from Moscow has been used to pay some political actors who spread Russian propaganda," BIS said in a statement. It added that the sums amounted to "millions" of Czech crowns (tens of thousands of pounds).
I went looking for the Voice of Europe site but it is now missing (Hmm. We’re having trouble finding that site). So I held my nose and visited their Twitter account and nothing new has been posted since the scandal broke.
We need to be careful when looking at news online. Recently a series of fake sites pretending to be legit US news sources was uncovered.
Russia-Backed ‘Fake News Organizations’ Revealed Across the U.S. in Bombshell New York Times Report
The fake news sites have names that sound like they are legit but aren't. Examples: D.C. Weekly, the New York News Daily, the Chicago Chronicle, and the Miami Chronicle. There is a legit New York Daily News – note the different word order from the fake. There once was a newspaper called the Chicago Chronicle but it folded during the Theodore Roosevelt administration.
Google News searches spew a lot of crap. In a lot of cases the "news" sources on Google are just the proverbial guy in his underwear in his mom's basement posting bullshit. They may not be Russian but they are often dubious.
It's best to create a bookmark folder of known legit news sources. There are still numerous good sources not behind paywalls. And many countries have public broadcasters who post news in English. Just a few: NPR, BBC, DW, CBC, ABC (Australia), RFI, YLE, Radio Sweden | Sveriges Radio, NHK-World, and even EER in Estonia.
When running across a news story which sounds peculiar, check to see if it's being reported in known legit media before posting or sharing it.
There are national elections this year in a number of countries including India, the US, and (probably) the UK. Don't inadvertently assist Putin's effort to spread disinformation and sow chaos.

(Rabbi Louis Milgrom was born in Poland in 1909 and came to the U.S. in 1921. In 1930 he graduated from the Lewis Institute, in Chicago (which merged with the Armour Institute in 1941 to form the Illinois Institute of Technology, where my father taught for nearly three decades). He received his ordination four years later from Hebrew Theological College, which at that time was also located in Chicago and is now in Skokie. This, combined with his wartime membership in the Rabbinical Council of America, tells us that he was Orthodox. Prior to joining up in 1943 he worked for the Joliet Jewish Federation, in Chicago's southwest suburbs. After the war he directed the Hillel chapter serving the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities and later taught at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. He also seems to have undergone a change in his theological outlook: when he died in 2004, the Conservative movement's Rabbinical Assembly took out an obituary for him. Such a shift was fairly unusual then and even more so now.)

Researchers from the University of Illinois-Chicago have discovered that mental health complications as severe as suicidal thoughts, plans or actions were most frequently reported right before or as bleeding began, by a group of 119 participants who filled out daily surveys chronicling their thoughts and feelings.
And, researchers add, premenstrual dysphoric disorder – a more severe form of premenstrual syndrome, or PMS, which causes significant mood swings – was not a factor in about 60% of cases involving suicidal thoughts or acts.

In 1954, Mike Connolly, the gay gossip columnist for the Hollywood Reporter from 1951 to 1966, was described by Newsweek as “probably the most influential columnist inside the movie colony,” the one writer “who gets the pick of trade items, the industry rumors, the policy and casting switches.” He was indeed one of the most talented and influential members of the Hollywood press of his time, and his column, for those who could read between the lines, was a daily chronicle of gay goings-on. Fifty years later, his cumulative output is a virtually untapped lode of gay Hollywood history.
Mike Connolly’s life and work are the focus of this book. It considers his formative years, his pre-World War II life at the University of Illinois and in Chicago, and the ways in which the homosexual community in Hollywood lived lives both secretive and open in the forties, fifties and sixties. It also examines the literary merit, power and newsworthiness of Connolly’s “Rambling Reporter” column in the Hollywood Reporter and its significance as a chronicle of gay Hollywood life; the previously unexplored role of Connolly’s column in the Hollywood blacklist and how his anti-Communist crusade was rooted in his earlier campaign to close down the brothels in his college town; and how his life informed his column and his column shaped his life.

THE IMPERIUM CHRONICLES
So, Korben has his new ward, Princess Seren. Soon they will be going to his manor house that is closer to the Mage Consortium that she will be attending. I am busy picking out pictures of the Consortium and the manor, making up the layout of the house and the feel of it to use. In all this too you will get a better feeling for Korben and Seren, along with his valet, Hendrick. There is also other characters that Seren will meet along the way at the Consortium that will add to and somewhat complicate things. How? Well, that I cannot share. The Consortium is like a college on Earth. There are different buildings, there will be different classes in those buildings for various skills that mages need. There are also some students who will live in dormitories on campus, some who will live in apartments off campus, and then there are aristocrats like Princess Seren who will live in mansions/manors. Social standing does not matter at the Consortium, it is by your talents you received at birth. Seren's were that of a mage. Korben's will be revealed later.
Korben's curse will be revealed, along with how and why he received it. Also, it will explain what happened with Seren's mother and lead into how he has now found himself in this position and what it means for Seren, Hendrick, and himself...and maybe others.
BENDING THE LAW
This story is just starting so there is a lot to build up here as I rewrite it. I'm realizing as I'm going back into it that I had not been as descriptive as I should have in some places, about people or places. Thankfully, it is set in Chicago, so I don't have to describe a totally made up world. I can say Navy Pier, and it is a place that people can know or look up, as opposed to any place in Imperium, Caligo, or Uffern over in The Imperium Chronicles. However, details of Colin's office, Sorena's lab, or the station where Karsten works are going to need to be filled in at some point. I prever in bits and pieces where necessary. Information dumps bore the piss out of me as a reader, so I don't do that if I can avoid it as a writer. I'm also trying to expound some more on the personalities of all of the characters.
This started out as a project for just me from a plot bunny that wouldn't stop hopping in my brain. So now that I am getting it ready to be read by others, I am having to put in the parts that make it make more sense to someone that doesn't live in my head and hasn't been to Chicago and know the landscape and how things can be up there. Also how the characters are in my head needs to be expounded upon.
So their Chicago is being drawn as I go through and edit before posting so that the reader is drawn into their city and how things are being laid out. What it's like to live their daily life, and how everything is happening in their world.
BOMBS, BODYGUARDS, & BROKEN ARTIFACTS
Unlike the other two stories, this one has been read before, just not here. Many of these chapters were read somewhere else where I was also involved in roleplay. I had put them up to a certain part before the atmosphere became too toxic. HOWEVER, I have made some changes in the story since then because I didn't like how one of my plot points went. So I went back and un-killed someone, and no, they are not a zombie. I may have voodoo in my story, but we are NOT going to have zombies. FUCK...plot bunny produced. *facepalm* I hate this.....
ANYWAY...*shoves plot bunny in a box* Because of that change, I have to remove some of the foreshadowing I did in the beginning. While readers who didn't know what was going to happen might not have picked up on it, I catch every one of the little cookie crumbs that I threw in along the way. I'm going to have to do some bigger edits in the future; right now at the beginning, they are small. I'm also adding more in because readers now have not seen any of these characters as roleplay characters so I need to fluff them out more so you can see their personalities. My babies need loooooove.
Also, while the story will be set in real locations, there are fictional place names also thrown in the way authors do and I'm going to have to describe those better than I did in the past so that you can picture them in your mind. I'm working on that, and not info dumping. Again, I hate that, so trying to drop tiny bits of information as I go along.

The Story of Vivian Maier, a Legendary Photographer We Almost Never Knew
If you haven’t heard of Vivian Maier, you're hardly alone. It's something of a miracle that anyone has, even though she stands among the best street photographers of the 20th century.
Maier made tens of thousands of intimate, humorous, and powerful portraits over the course of her life, and shoved them all into boxes that went undiscovered until a serendipitous $300 bid at an auction in 2007. It was only after Maier's death in 2009 that people recognized the genius of her photos, which can hang alongside those of Robert Frank, Dianne Arbus, or Henri Cartier Bresson.
Finding Vivian Maier tells the story of her long life (she died at 83) and exquisite work, and chronicles the immense task of piecing the story together from the clues she left behind. No less fascinating is the story of the film's co-director, John Maloof, who placed that winning bid and worked hard to bring Maier's work the global recognition he’s certain it deserves.
Maloof purchased a box containing 40,000 negatives of photos Maier made in the 1960s. He hoped to use them to illustrate Portage Park, a book he co-authored about life on the city’s northwest side. The photos didn't suit his needs, but Maloof grew so obsessed by them that he left real estate to take up photography. Unsure what else to do with the pictures, he posted a selection of them online and created a Flickr thread asking, "what do I do with this stuff?" The thread blew up, and Maloof realized just what he’d stumbled on: A one-of-a-kind historical document and trove of unseen world-class art.
Maier’s photos, snapped mostly with the boxy Rolleiflex camera perpetually dangling from her neck, are clever, idiosyncratic, and sensitive to the absurd nuances of daily life--qualities of a great street photographer. But her talent, sense of humor, and physical appearance (Maier took her share of selfies) are all we learn about her from the pictures alone. Maloof needed to dig for everything else.
One of the great achievements of this documentary is the DIY detective work Maloof and fellow filmmaker Charlie Siskel did in piecing together the narrative of a deliberately mysterious woman. Using every resource he could think of--including scouring Google images to match the steeples seen in some of Maier's photos with those seen in the French countryside-–the sudden documentarian guides us through the story of Maier’s life. His passion for telling the story is contagious, and it's easy to share his excitement over each new tidbit of information. The picture that emerges is, like her work, sometimes charming, and sometimes all too real.
Maier was born in New York and made her living as a nanny there and in Chicago, probably because the job allowed her time to make pictures. The children, now grown, that she cared for and many of their parents provide the most insight. They describe Maier as intelligent, adventurous, and intensely private. She had also mastered the photographer's balance of being curious and bold while remaining aloof and removed. She also could be irritable and temperamental, prone to strange (even violent) outbursts that sometimes cost her jobs. Through it all, she never quit taking photos, even if meant bringing her young charges to the shopping center, slum or slaughterhouse she felt like shooting that day.
Her compulsive chronicling of the world around her expanded to include color photography and film; reels and reels of audio tape feature guerrilla interviews conducted in supermarket lines. Maier also was a bona fide hoarder, stacking newspapers in her rooms until the floors literally sagged. Early in the film Maloof lays out artifacts, acquired from storage lockers and other buyers at the 2007 auction, and they cover the entire floor. The material includes more than 100,000 negatives; thousands of notes, receipts, newspaper clippings; and countless marginalia. There was a lot to unravel, let alone weave into a coherent story, and the filmmakers do a great job bringing it all together.
Some reviews have panned Finding Vivian Maier for being little more than an advertisement for the publishing business Maloof has built upon her photos. He briefly addresses this in the documentary, arguing that with Maier dead and no estate to represent her, there is no one else to champion her work. In the film, he reads the rejection letter the MoMA sent him early in his project. Whether the project is driven by duty or profit ultimately doesn't matter, because it's a fascinating story told well, and we're lucky Maier's photos fell into the hands of someone with the will and the means to ensure people saw them.
Another relevant question is whether Maier would wanted the attention. The film makes abundantly clear just how obsessed she was with privacy. Maloof acknowledges this conundrum, but finds justification with the discovery (accompanied in the film by a soaring string section soundtrack) of a single note to a small photo printing shop in a tiny village in France. In it, Maier suggests going into business with the printmaker to create postcards from some of her photos. Her humble proposal may not indicate anything akin to interest in the vast publicity campaign that's made her posthumously popular, with her likeness and photos circulating the globe under the Maloof Collection emblem.
Still, without Maloof's work, the odds that Maier's amazing body of work would ever be widely seen are miniscule. It isn't easy getting people to notice, much less celebrate, a new name in the arts. The photographers so often invoked to describe Maier's work had time to define their era and influence later generations of photographers. Her work has the legitimacy to be no less influential, but lacks the cultural currency. That is changing, however, with the reach of the internet. Finding Vivian Maier is therefore not just an account of a gifted photographer's life, but a call for the art establishment to take her work seriously.
In that way, it has a chance of adding a name to the canon of great street photographers. That is an achievement worth celebrating.

The Chicago Defender was founded (1905) by Robert Sengstacke Abbott. He published the first issue, a run of 300 copies, on May 6, 1905. The Defender began as a four-page weekly handbill filled with local news and reproductions of clippings from other newspapers. He sold both subscriptions and advertising for the paper by going door-to-door throughout Chicago.
He used the Defender as a forum to attack racial injustice from the outset, and included a front-page heading on every issue that read, “American Race Justice Must Be Destroyed”. The Defender was a leading advocate in the fight against racial, economic, and social discrimination. It championed equal employment and fair housing for Blacks, and boldly reported on lynchings, rapes, and Black disfranchisement. By 1915 the local newspaper had a weekly circulation of 16,000.
The Defender saw its major growth during the Great Migration and is credited as being a major catalyst for that movement of half a million Blacks from the South to the North (1915-20). He used Black Pullman Porters and entertainers to transport his paper across the Mason-Dixon Line. He printed copies of train schedules and job listings to entice southern Blacks to relocate. The Black population of Chicago increased by 148 percent with plenty of support and encouragement from the Defender.
It became the first African American paper to reach a circulation of 100,000 copies and to achieve national circulation. Its circulation reached 230,000 copies per week. The Defender had many notable columnists, including Walter White and Langston Hughes. It published the early works of poet Gwendolyn Brooks. As a result of the Defender’ssuccess, he became one of the first African American millionaires.
Upon his death, John H. Sengstacke, his nephew, assumed control of the Defender. The Defender became a daily and was renamed the Chicago Daily Defender. It was the largest Black-owned daily newspaper in the world. He purchased a long-time rival newspaper The Pittsburgh Courier and added it to his chain of papers which includes The Michigan Chronicle, and The Tri-State Defender. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence

Week 1 of my work “vacation” is complete. I am not scheduled for this entire holiday season. This may have been one of the only weeks I’ve had off since I had started.
I was almost murdered by the police for ignoring their “greeting” and being identified as someone holding a firearm. It was a visual misunderstanding. Still, he pulled his gun on me and I was not entertained. Will not elaborate any further.

When Dr. Alfred Kinsey embarked on his 1939 expedition to the gay neighborhoods of Chicago, prospecting for data he would include in his landmark Sexual Behavior in the Human Male, he was not prepared for the flourishing homosexual networks, customs, and haunts he would find. That such a world could have existed right under a researcher's nose astonished him. Writing to a colleague, he wondered, "Why has no one cracked this before?" A comparable degree of amazement could apply to the case of Mike Connolly, the brilliant gay gossip columnist of the Hollywood Reporter from 1951 to 1966. Even with a deluge in recent years of gay Hollywood studies, Connolly, the most talented and influential member of the Hollywood press of his time, has received only scant attention from gay historians. His column, for those who knew how to read between the lines, was a remarkable daily chronicle of gay goings-on, and half a century later his cumulative output is a priceless but virtually untapped lode of gay Hollywood history. Why has Mike Connolly not been cracked before? ... Mike Connolly is not easily pigeonholed into today's rigidly defined, black-and-white gay categories. If he was careful not to flaunt or write publicly about his sexual orientation, as proscribed by Hollywood protocol, he was candid in other ways about where his sexual interests lay. He lived openly with his partner, Joseph Russell Zappia, and put Zappia on his payroll as his legman. Everyone in Hollywood knew what his situation was.
