There is something terrifying about splintering apart.

Fracturing into 3 uneven pieces, wondering what you lose in the process. The fade out from being one singular, whole person into a concept, watching as your mind and heart rip from you into their own people. Knowing it means another revolution in a hellish cycle. It's terrifying, not only just the loss of completion, the feeling of being a real person, but also the knowledge that this could be it. It could be the loop something goes to far and they don't come back from that. Where the rope finally sees use, where a shot doesn't miss, where…

It's best not to dwell on it. But that doesn't make the fear leave. Doesn't make it hurt any less. Doesn't mean much of anything when Soul, the intangible concept of what makes someone who they are given human form, treks across the void of the psyche as it forms into something more welcoming, more familiar. Soul watches, exhausted and terrified, as void become grass under his feet, watches trees sprout and grow, watches a familiar house build itself up beam by beam in the distant fog. The running theory they had was that this was some sort of amalgam of memories, a half remembered childhood home, a familiar woods, their explanation for why it stays but shifts. Of course, it hardly matters, they'd split and fight and threaten just as well in the prior void, this is just…. easier. Something nice for them to have in the time they're forced to spend here together.

Heart is easier to find, this time, sitting at the base of a sycamore tree, knees to his chest, curling into himself. There's a 'tire swing' hanging from a branch, this awkward plastic thing that's too small for any of them to really use the intended way. The ground is already littered with the trees seeds, the fuzz of them drifting in the air in a slightly breeze.

Neither of them need to talk, the routine well practiced, Soul reaching out and hauling Heart to his feet. Heart wiping away tears while they go find their Mind. The ground beneath them shifts at some point from grass and leaf litter to a sidewalk. From where, to where, doesn't matter. Mind is sitting on a retaining wall, right on the corner, just under the streetlight. Head in his hands. The sound of footsteps approaching has his straightening up, sliding off the wall to stand. A nod to Soul, and the three of them walk to their home for the loop.

It's dusty when they step through the door.

thinking about the way ghost doesn't hesitate to start killing shadows when graves betrays them but soap only takes one hostage

you can almost hear the voice in his head telling him it doesn't have to be this way; they can still talk it out

his first instinct when confronted with betrayal is to play it by the books: to go up the chain. that goes against everything we've seen him do. he bucks authority at every chance except for the one time he's confronted with the barrels of his allies' guns

he wants a peaceful resolution; for the first time we've ever seen, he doesn't want violence to be the answer. there has to be another fix, a solution that doesn't end with him killing the same men he's been working with; his friends

nothing's happened yet

it doesn't have to go this way

but ghost has been betrayed before. he knows the way this ends; either with him six feet under or his enemy

he doesn't hesitate

it's only when they knock alejandro out that soap shoots; when they spill the first blood and cross a line they can never come back from

only when ghost orders him to run and he has to cover his retreat

and somewhere along the line, between civilians’ screams and taunting voices, between his shaking breath and ghost steady in his ear, that naivety is stripped away; his trust turned to teeth that he uses to sink into throats of men he'd have given his life for

he's learned the price of trust

just like ghost did

but unlike ghost, he has someone to guide him through the aftermath

Hey, Happy Last Day of 2024! We made it! 🎉

My New Year’s gift to myself is casting a malicious spell that makes you all HAVE to watch AMC’s Pantheon. It’s required.

It drives me crazy how few people know about this gem of a show. The characters are endearing and relatable, and the story plays with the boundaries of tech, fantasy, and AI anxiety with a lot of skill. One of the best sci-fi shows of the best decade, and AMC gave it absolutely zero advertising.

You can find it on Netflix, or by sailing the High Seas (if you know what I mean).

Good luck, and make sure you go into it blind! (TW for a few scenes of animated gore in the first couple episodes, and for themes of unreality and depersonalization.)

Man...this might sound hella weird but alongside the incredible writing and art direction this game has, I'm just extremely happy to see so many things I recognize from growing up in the south be portrayed in South of Midnight

Like so many people treat the south like its nothing but a land of bigots and backwards people that are treated as inferior to the northern half of the states, we are treated like a joke most of the time in media or portrayed as the villains

But finally having this piece of media that displays how much beauty there is in the south, shares southern folklore with the rest of the world, as well as some of the beautiful ecosystems like the bayous and marshes? Even the towns and the food, the cozy atmosphere some of those old towns have

It just makes me smile despite the often heavy storytelling

It takes me back to when I was real little and going down into the carolinas, louisiana, and georgia to see family, hearing all the old folktales about things like boo hags and two-toed tom The game has just been super nostalgic for me in a good way and it makes me want to take a trip down to georgia/louisiana again and hopefully meet up with my family again
