Making a Nekomata cosplay for Halloween Part 1: Preliminary sketches (Headband and apron)

I often joke that many of my cosplays are ‘canon events’ when they tend to be popular themes, fandoms or characters to cosplay. I’ve cosplayed from Danganronpa, cosplayed as Mabel Pines and as Marceline/ Marshall Lee. Next year, I hope to make a Hatsune Miku cosplay. (Naturally, these are characters that resonate with many people, and I am no exception.) Thus, me cosplaying a Cat Maid character feels very fitting to start this blog, although she is from a manga with almost no fandom online! 🙊

Sumire is a nekomata (cat monster) from the manga The Splendid work of a Monster Maid. She joins a maid agency in the demon realm that recovers stolen magic. It’s got a Halloweeny/spooky vibe, with some found family themes, and I absolutely adore the books. Here are my first sketches to wrap my head around how I’m going to make this cosplay. I’m planning to start with making the apron and the maid headband, because they are the bare bones for the cosplay. If I do not have time to finish making the dress, I have enough black dresses to make a ‘closet cosplay’ of Sumire. The apron shifts the costume from black cat to cat maid, and the dress and accessories would make the cosplay recognizable as Sumire. I’m planning to use fabric from my stash, which includes many off-white/ beige fabrics. While her apron is white on the cover of the manga, I think my fabric will give the uniform a more aged, spooky look and make the frayed ruffles seem vintage.

Earlier this month, I made the cat ears for this cosplay, but I want the white headdress to be detachable, because, knowing me, I will end up wanting to use the cat ears for another cosplay,,

and, most importantly....

ADDING CAT EARS TO ALL PAST AND FUTURE COSPLAYS!!!!!!!!!!!! (I have too much power now 🫡)

Also, does anyone have thoughts on the XIII on the maid headbands? My brother immediately thought of the Tarot card for Death, and naturally 13 is often used as a ‘scary’ number. (I could have totally missed something on my first read through of the manga, so maybe the author mentions it)

A few things...

1) Reviving this ‘ol Tumblr blog. 2)No longer into drama attached to this blog... whatever it was.   3 I AM NON BINARY!! I needed time away from people and everything to sort myself out IRL.

Hey everyone! I wanted to share that all 3 parts of my blog entries on how I made my red riding hood Miku cosplay are up on my cosplay blog, https://devioustofucosplay.wordpress.com I took lots of pictures during the process of making this costume so I would have lots of pictures to add to the blog. I am a visual learner so having lots of pictures helps me when reading a tutorial. I also made some diagrams for some steps that were harder to explain. These blog entries are a lot more detailed than my old ones so I hope you find them helpful!
