Haunt - Snapetober Day 3
Young Severus visits his usual haunt on his free evening, unexpectedly bumping into an old neighbour.
Prompts by @superfallingstars
Tumblr media
The night has a thousand eyes, plunging Severus into loneliness with every blink. The insignificance of life weighs down on him like the cruel stares from the dark sky. The local Cokeworth pub was Severus’s usual haunt on difficult nights. The sign that once read The Blackened Hearth now hangs battered and beaten, weathered by the northern storms. Letters hanging like fragile lives, Severus watches them swing in the autumn wind.
Friday was his night off from the responsibilities of teaching. This year, Halloween landed on a Saturday, so Severus had the night to himself for some respite before he’d be expected to indulge in the festivities of the feast. It was relentless.
The landlord nods curtly at Severus as he approaches the bar, his “usual” is poured from a pump and Severus exchanges muggle coins for the pleasure of a pint. He sips the head as he shuffles to the end of the bar and finds a small table for a solitary patron. Despite the roaring fire, the vast room remains frigidly cold. Severus pulls his overcoat tighter around his small frame and drinks with a thirst, addressing the cold night with words found at the end of a pint glass. Words, wishes, confessions. Dumbledore had set fire to them, leaving Severus with the ashes of his regrets. He was an instrument in the man’s cruel orchestra and there was no interval to breathe. A necessary evil, he thought to himself. There was no escape.
“Snape?”
Severus cast his eyes from the bottom of his glass to the voice. A stooped man was standing by the juke box, mouth agape. He slowly approached with a limp, his body was as tall as it was wide and there was a distinct smell of stale ale about him. The smile was a giveaway. Cigarette-stained teeth with a shining silver canine. A friend of his father’s. The name slipped from his mind.
“Snape?” he asked again, getting a closer look at Severus’s face. His own name lost too. “Christ, you’re the spits of your mum,” he exclaimed, laughing with a chesty cackle. “Let me get you a drink, lad,” he offered, turning to hobble to the bar before Severus could protest. This man had spent many nights with his father, getting obliterated at the pub. Severus never liked him. Those nights turned Tobias Snape into a monster.
“Cheers,” the man called, clinking his glass to Severus’s pint of bitter.
“Are you livin’ back here then?” he asked before gulping down half of his lager.
“No,” he muttered, “I moved away.”
“Got a fancy job then, eh?”
“I teach,” Severus took a mouthful of his pint. “I teach at a boarding school.”
“Fancy that!” The man slapped a hand to the table, it shook on its flimsy legs. “Y’dad would be proud, lad. He would be proud.” Severus doubted that. “I can’t believe the old sod popped before I did, and your mum? Irene, sweet Irene.” Severus refrained from correcting him, tipping more beer back. “She was a good wife to Toby,” Severus wanted to leave. Immediately.
“Anyway, what are y’doing back here?”
“Visiting.”
“I don’t usually come in ‘ere,” the man confessed but Severus already knew that. The sole reason Severus drinks here is because none of the people from his past do. Until now. “The Bull’s got rats, no good for business apparently. What they gonna do, eh? Sup the ale?” he threw his head back in a harsh laugh, Severus tightened his lips into a slight smile, reluctantly.
“Lad, you can’t be much older than...” his rheumy eyes shifted upwards as if they might catch a number from the air.
“Twenty-one,” said Severus, stonily.
“Still a kid y’self really, you know, to be teaching,” the man muttered, inhaling large gulps. “Bloody hell...”
Severus hummed to himself. Hell was Hogwarts, an endless torment that punished Severus for his choices. The choices that sickened him would plague him forever. He would rot in the castle, under the neglectful eyes of the professors who despised him. Severus was devoid of redemption and disturbed by the idea that he may never hear forgiveness in the voice of his only friend.
“What happened to that red head you always kicked about with?”
Was this bastard a wizard?
Severus downed his glass, watching the foam head settle at the bottom. He needed to find a new Friday haunt. The nameless man irritated him.
“Her name is Lily. And she is well.”
Silently, Severus left the table. He returned his pint glasses to the bar and stepped out into the street. He wondered if Lily remembered the man’s name, he was often stumbling around the streets when they were children. He wondered if Lily would reply if he wrote to her and asked. He wondered if she was planning anything for Halloween tomorrow. Severus wondered a lot about Lily. He wondered if they could ever be friends again. Pacing down the road to a deserted corner, Severus disapparated swiftly, landing smoothly at the gates of the castle. Down the winding path to the entrance, Severus worded the letter in his head; knowing his thoughts would never translate to parchment. They were just words found at the bottom of a pint glass.

Gideon Nxumalo was a key figure during the formative years of South African jazz in the 1950s, helping shape the emerging South African jazz sound as a pianist and composer and contributing to the scene as a radio presenter, music teacher and arranger. His recorded output as bandleader/composer is comprised of three iconic albums from Jazz Fantasia (1962) to Gideon Plays (1968) to Early-Mart (1970). Early-Mart was Gideon Nxumalo's tribute to his friend and musical compatriot, drummer Early Mabuza (Castle Lager Big Band, Mankunku Quartet), who died in 1969. Chapter Seventeen (Part 2)
Tumblr media
We get dressed and head off to the festival grounds after that, and Claire, Shane and I agree that we want to go and see Fight Like Apes who are playing at midday. Jen opts to come with us, and I expect Jude to come too, but he decides to go with Joe and Kasper to see some DJ called Tiga, which throws me even more.  Maybe I’m just overthinking. I tell myself he’s being normal, and that he’s probably just playing it cool.
The festival is so busy that day that I don’t see him around again after that, but I try my best to ignore the heavy feeling in my stomach, and the increasing thoughts that maybe I did something to annoy him, or maybe I’m a bad kisser and he’s disgusted by me. Maybe I’m too young and immature, or that he’s figured out that I’m actually a big loser with nothing interesting to say. Maybe everyone is right about me.
Tumblr media
Claire is having fun though, and she looks so beautiful dressed all in white in the sun. Every time I think it’s impossible for her to look prettier, she somehow does, and I know I’m not the only one who’s thinking it. I catch Shane looking at her more than once with an expression I’ve never seen him wear before: pure unabashed adoration. Like she’s the sun that lights up his sky. I hope he realises how lucky he is. They’re inseparable all day, and stand together through every concert we go to with their arms around each other, him delivering little kisses to the top of her head as he holds her. Watching them like this makes my heart ache. I want more than anything for somebody to look at me like that, or to touch me like that, but instead I feel heavy with the knowledge that the boy I like is off somewhere, lost in the realm of this gigantic festival, probably with a plastic cup of Corona in each hand, listening to some mindless electronica that he doesn’t even enjoy and not thinking much about me at all.
Tumblr media
I don’t do a good job of hiding my listlessness when Jen and I sit down for lunch together in the shade of the marquee we were just crammed into for a Crystal Castles gig a few minutes ago.
“What’s up, chicken?” She unwraps a burrito and lays into it.
“Nothing. I’m tired.”
She nods. “Have you had anything to drink?”
“No.”
She slides the cup of beer she bought for herself across the picnic bench to me and gestures to it like Bon Appetit. “Have one on me, it’ll make you feel better.”
“Won’t drinking just make me feel worse?”
Tumblr media
“No! There’s truly nothing a drink won’t fix, right?” She nudges Shane, who’s just joined us at the table with Claire still stuck to his side. He looks at me disapprovingly and then starts to say something boring about how I’m too young to drink, even though he was miraculously fine with Claire doing it yesterday, but Jen just rolls her eyes and tells him to shut up. “You have to stop with this protective-older-brother craic, let her live her life.”
“Well I know her mam, and I know what she’d say if she knew she was drinking.”
“Are you going to tell on her?”
He knows it’d be heinous to do that, and I know that he never would. I grab the beer and I gulp it down, just to show him that I can. I’ve been drinking since I was fifteen and I know how to handle it as well as he does.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“Better?” Jen asks me, and I nod, even though I find beer to be generally disgusting. The taste transports me to days spent drinking Tesco lager in a field after school until someone throws up. I bring the empty cup over to a nearby bin where a guy with shorn hair is openly urinating. “That’s so foul.” I tell him, letting my horrible feelings seep out of me. I don’t care, he’s a stranger.
“Piss off.” He suggests, and then directs the stream towards me instead. I jump out of the way too late and it splashes on my wellies. I cry out and try to shake them dry while he cackles with delight. Everything around me seems ugly, I’m so aware of the litter all over the ground, overflowing bins, the horrible man who pissed on my boots, and the smell of distant porta-loos. The sweet, cloying taste of beer in my mouth is making me feel ill.
Tumblr media
Claire is so happy that she’s able to buy alcohol now, so throughout the day I keep giving her money to get me cups of white wine. I drink them quickly, and eventually they do make me feel better, in an synchronously awful kind of way. We go from gig to gig, and I have drink after drink until the day blurs together into one long smear of loud drum beats and bitter wine. I don’t ever really get drunk, the time between each break and the queues for the alcohol stands is so long that I just stay in this queasy purgatory state between states of being until I run out of money and nobody wants to buy anything else for me.
Tumblr media
The evening settles down with the smell of bonfires, and eventually we meet up with the three others under the entrance to go and see Foo Fighters, which everyone unanimously decided would be the unmissable gig of the weekend. I feel nervous in anticipation of seeing Jude, now so entirely convinced after a whole day of catastrophizing that he hates my guts, actually, and wouldn’t come to my funeral if I died.
Tumblr media
He’s not that bad, but he’s not being especially friendly either. The only way I can think to describe him is as neutral. Like he’s not experiencing any emotions right now, and when I’m used to him being so lively and expressive it’s very unsettling to be around him. When we start pushing into the crowd I give in to my anxiety and touch Jen’s elbow. “Is Jude okay?”
She nods while rolling her eyes. “Yeah, I think he’s just in one of his moods.”
I didn’t realise he had moods. I can’t think of what to say to that, my thoughts feel fuzzy, so I just utter a dejected: “Oh.”
“Don’t worry about it, he woke up on the wrong side of the bed. I had to see him like this all the time at school. Just ignore him, he’ll be grand tomorrow.”
“Nothing happened to him, did it?”
“I doubt it. He’s just in his head about something, probably.” She leans towards me. “He’s a scorpio.” She explains, as though that’s supposed to mean something to me.
Tumblr media
I’m still trying to remember what scorpios do when we reach the churning centre of the crowd. It makes me anxious, but everybody else is just diving right in, so I do too. I’m wedged between walls of bodies on all sides of me, but there’s a distinct excitement rising all around. I’m still holding on to Jen, the others seem to have been swallowed up by the crowd like they were never there in the first place.
The first thing I can hear is the soft plucking strings of the opening line of The Pretender rings through the air, and then I can’t see Dave Grohl, but I can hear him. The crowd starts to transform from a solid mass of bodies into something fluid, and I realise that I’m being pushed out of the way, my spot being stolen by big men shoving their way to the front, all limbs flailing everywhere, launching themselves through the crowd to try and get closer as the drums start pounding. One of them actually grabs the back of my shirt and yanks me backwards out of Jen’s grip like I have no right to be where I am, no girls allowed in the Foo Fighters mosh pit. Another one crashes suddenly into the side of my ribs and I am so desperate to escape. When a third bangs his body against me he catapults me into the man behind me and tears spring to my eyes. I let myself go totally limp and let the heaving motion of the animal spit me out to the back shoulders shaking, sobbing and alone.
Tumblr media
When I look back at the pulsing crowd I can’t believe I was in there. It’s a rat king of testosterone, men shoving each other around to the music, hands grabbing collars and shoulders, and in the middle of it I see Joe, Kasper and Jude, gleefully participating in the chaos. I can’t help but feel dismayed, remembering how quick he’d been to save me from the crowd yesterday, holding me in front of him and shielding me from pointy elbows and stomping feet, and today when the crowd is bigger and rougher he’s left me to fend for myself. I don’t know what I did. Maybe I’m just too inexperienced, and he wants a woman, not some seventeen year old. I should have let him keep kissing me, I should have let him take me back to his tent and shown him that I’m grown up enough. That’s what a normal girl would have done.
I go and stand at the very back where I can see the band, but barely. They’re just little black smudges on a blazing stage. I know the songs but I don’t sing along, or dance, or even uncross my arms from my chest. I stand there until they finish, crying my makeup off my face. I feel like a husk. Hollowed out, nauseous, tipsy.

DWC Day 2: Suppress
Tumblr media
<<PREV || NEXT>>
Thil paused his mad scribbling on the bar napkin. “Whoa, hang on–” he fixed Bruce with a wild eyed stare. “First of all, he called her a what?” A moment of silence was begged when the next round of Great Sea lagers arrived, a long draught taken before he continued:  “--And second of all, you called her your what?” “Not important.  Jus’ keep your eyes–” “--ears?” “--on the story. So anyway, I’m strippin’ clothes and Zelion had enough–” “Imagine!” Thil snorted a laugh. “Shut up and listen–”
It began with a sharp chill in the air, sapping heat until a thin layer of frost coated each stained glass window. Torches snuffed, plunging combatants in darkness, save where Elune’s red-dressed glow swayed on the ballroom floor.
That was when he saw it: there was no telltale glint of steel in the darkness. The twelve soldiers brandished sheathed blades and wooden bucklers painted with a black and gold castle turret-- the Mournvalor family crest.
A woody, earthy smell filled the air, like oak but sweeter. Rowanwood.
“The worgen’s weakness. It melts through fur and flesh alike.”
The sounds of transformation were indistinguishable from a man being torn limb from limb. Joints cracked and formed anew, sinew and muscles crawling like spiders across a web to claim their length. Corded muscles launched the newly formed monster, not at Zelion, but in a wide arch over his head to vanish among the shadows on the wall.
“Beast,” Zelion spat derisively.
Hairs stood on the back of a soldier’s exposed neck. The shadow descended from the wall and teeth sank between vertebrae, puncturing with airy ease. Armor clattered as the soldier collapsed.
Steam rose from the blood pooled on the pinewood floor; pale, ghastly wisps draining life into the chilled air.
“One wrong move and I was dead.”
“Protect his lordship!” barked the commander; he of the greatest courage. An old soldier, past his prime but keen of mind, took up Zelion’s right flank, golden eyes wild.
The rest fell in line like herded cattle, their terror barely suppressed.
The soldier’s wooden blade howled madly in the dark. It was all he could do to keep snapping teeth and rending claws from his throat as the wolfman’s weight bore down on his shield, smoke rising from a boiling palm.
The wild swing singed fur off the monster's arm, forcing Bruce to retreat back to the cover of the moonless shadows.
“Truth is, I was just stalling. I think Zelion knew that.”
“Disappointing,” Zelion tutted.  “You’re all quivering at a single dog.”
The lord’s small fist clenched the air like he caught the tails of balloons.
The old soldier froze abruptly, his blade dropping to the floor. Necrotic magic coalesced just above his heart. A cry died, strangled in his throat.
Zelion’s fingers squeezed and one by one, a steady series of pops echoed within each golden cuirass.  One by one his men collapsed around his feet.  Blood oozed from the chinks in their armor.  Blood and something worse.
Something black and fetid.
The stench of rotten meat and withered fruit was immediate and overwhelming.
“I had to strike. But what I didn't realize at the time was... each one of them had a Mournstone implanted in them–”
A final lunge from the shadows. A flash of teeth in a silent snarl, slavering for Zelion’s delicate throat.
“--just as I did.”
Bruce’s breath no longer came out in hot puffs; frost coated his lungs as his death sentence in his chest thrummed.
It twisted under his skin in mirror to Zelion's dainty wrist, as though he had a safe dial pinched between thumb and forefinger.
A pustule burst. A wave of nausea drove the worgen to the ground. Astral energy dimmed, leaving his eyes cold, gray and unfocused.
The commander rose to his feet, eyes reignited with lichfire.
Zelion’s fingers sprang open. Bruce sucked in a desperate breath as the necromancer disappeared down the hallway, leaving a simple command in his wake: “Kill him.”
"But the Fury of Goldrinn is fiercest when protecting the ones you love."
Skeletal hands clawed at Bruce, dragging him down among corpses and flesh sloughed from bone in rivers of pitch.

As Sweet As You Are
"Do you not have something more expensive?"
The alpha gives him a weird look, resting his hands on the table.
"Definitely not something the cost of that shade of blue that are your eyes," he responds effortlessly.
"Why is a male omega on his own out in the middle of the woods at this time of night?" Harry speaks, staring intensely at the prince, smirk lingering on his face. "Your kind is rather rare. You should be more careful. There are a lot of rogue alphas around that won't blink until they've knotted and bred you up."
The blue eyed omega swallows, shuffling in his seat awkwardly and looking anywhere but the alpha before him.
"I ran away from home," Louis admits, occupying himself by taking a sip of the lager instead of thinking about the fact that the alpha hasn't yet taken his eyes off him. "My parents want me to marry someone I do not want to marry, so I ran."
Louis is a runaway omega prince unaware of the dangerous alphas outside of the castle walls. Harry is the rogue alpha he meets at the 17Black tavern, but Louis doesn't know that. Not when he appears so sweet.

Strange incident in Berlin during the War of the 4th Coalition reported in Prussian newspapers
“After the unfortunate battle of Jena, Napoleon took up his headquarters in Charlottenburg Palace. He had barely gone to bed when the Prussian cavalry attack blared through the stillness of the night. Napoleon thought he had been ambushed and, startled, left his bed, rushed to the window and sounded the alarm. Everything rushes under the gun. The attack is blown again — and strangely enough — in the castle. An adjutant rushing from the Marble Hall finally solves the riddle. In that hall stands the Belloneon*, which His Majesty our King had had made by the acoustician Kaufmann in Dresden, a short time before that unfortunate battle, and which, on the King’s orders, had been provided with all the trumpet pieces of the Prussian cavalry. Napoleon’s curious companions had rummaged through the castle and had also come to the Belloneon in the Marble Hall. This strange instrument was examined and touched from all sides with genuine French curiosity. One happened to touch a small button that set the work in motion, and so it happened that a cavalry attack from 12 trumpets woke the Emperor from his sleep.”
———
*A Belloneon is a mechanical musical instrument consisting of many trumpets and kettle drums. The German Museum has a Belloneon with 24 trumpets and two drums (Inv.-Nr. 9654), built in 1805/06 by Friedrich and his father Johann Gottfried Kaufmann.
———

Strohs Brewery 991 Gratiot Ave
Stroh Brewing Company started with Johann Peter Stroh in 1775 in Kirn, Germany. Johann and his family lived in a house with an adjoining brew house attached, and ran a local inn that served meals and their family’s recipe for Bohemian-style Pilsner Ale. Johann had three sons and one daughter. His second son, Georg Freidrich Stroh, inherited the brew house. Georg’s youngest son was
Johann Bernhard Stroh (known to the world as Bernhard), who was born in 1821. On February 22, 1848, revolutions erupted across Europe. With all the turbulent violence surrounding Europe in the mid-19th century, and with his father Johann’s death and his elder brother Georg inheriting the family business, a 27 year old Bernhard Stroh, who had learned the brewing trade, immigrated to the United States.
Tumblr media
Bernhard Stroh arrived in the United States in 1850. He immediately started his own business. Stroh opened a brewery at 57 Catherine Street…He developed a market for a new light lager beer among the larger German immigrant population, and names his new company Lion’s Head Brewery, adopting the Lion’s Crest logo from Kyrburg Castle in Kirn, Germany.
The company uses this same crest as their logo to this day. With only an investment of $150 (in 2016 dollars, this would amount to $4,409.53) that he provided himself through working for the family inn back in Germany, Stroh had to be very frugal in his spending. By 1860, Stroh’s customers had a desire for Stroh to start bottling his famous beer so they could enjoy the Bohemian-style Pilsner Ale at their homes.
Tumblr media
Bernhard Stroh would have his sons personally cart small kegs of beer to his customer’s homes and business by wheelbarrow.
Stroh’s would not only become Detroit’s largest brewer, but the third largest in the country.
This massive, million-square-foot factory at Gratiot near I-75 grew as the company did, with buildings dating from the 1860s to 1914. In late 1890, the firm Spier & Rohns was hired to make extensive additions and improvements to the Stroh campus, including building a 25-foot-by-70-foot fireproof stockhouse, a 60-foot-by-100-foot bottling works, and a new ice-machine plant. These additions made the brewery the largest in Michigan and formed some of the most visible parts of the plant.
By 1956, the Detroit brewery was pumping out 2.7 million barrels of beer — 83.7 million gallons.
he 1970s and 1980s were very productive years for the Stroh’s; sales continued to increase with the acquisition of Goebel’s, new leadership came in 1967 with John Stroh becoming CEO and Peter Stroh, Gari Stroh’s son, became President. The duo expanded the company to its greatest height throughout the two decades with new marketing and aggressive advertising strategies. With increased sales, the Stroh brewing company was able to match the big three car companies in terms of salaries and benefits. Early in the 1980’s, Peter Stroh started looking to take Stroh’s to the national stage, and made a bid on the Schaeffer Brewing Company and Schlitz Brewing Company. Schaeffer started to go into debt in the late 1970s and early ’80s, making the buyout from Stroh’s all too easy in 1981. Schlitz accepted a buyout offer of $17 a share. Schlitz became a wholly owned subsidiary of the Stroh Brewing Company, making Stroh the third-largest brewery in the United States. With all this expansion, Peter Stroh, now CEO at this time, realized his company was overextended. By 1985, Peter Stroh recognized his company was operating with excess capacity, On Feb. 8, 1985, Stroh’s announced it was closing its Detroit facility, calling it too costly to run and too inefficient compared with newer facilities it had acquired. The plant was shuttered that May, bringing an end to 135 years of tradition and costing 1,159 Detroiters their jobs.
Tumblr media
The factory was imploded in two phases -- on April 13, 1986, and July 13, 1986 -- with the land soon redeveloped as Brewery Park.
In 1999, the struggling company was imploded, too, split up and sold to Miller Brewing and Pabst.

Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media

Queenslandin Salaiset Kansiot
Queenslandin Salaiset Kansiot
Tumblr media
Oletko koskaan miettinyt, miksi Pohjois-Queenslandista on tullut UFO-havaintojen pesäke?

Trip to Taiwan, April 2024 - Day 2: KAVALAN Whiskey Tasting
Tumblr media
After the distillery tour, whiskey tasting and souvenir purchase.
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Tumblr media Tumblr media
NTD600(約3,000円)ですが、2人で分けるので十分です。
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
