Meta: Hogwarts Ghosts as Anti-House Symbols (feat. the Bloody Baron vs. Severus Snape)
I saw a post which argued, in part, that Ravenclaw's ghost is a poor example of a good Ravenclaw. This made me consider whether other Hogwarts houses have ghosts that make them look better, and I realized it's the opposite — the House ghosts work as warnings for what each House could become. Snape's contrast with the Bloody Baron especially shows that Snape has triumphed above the doomed narrative that the ghosts represent.
(TW: mention of suicide.)
Gryffindor: Sir Nicholas
As we know from the Sorting Hat's song in Book 1, the Gryffindor ideal is to be "brave at heart," full of "daring, nerve, and chivalry." Sir Nicholas, however, is... not that. We see him trying to get Harry, Ron, and Hermione to solve his problems with the Headless Hunt for him in CoS's Deathday Party chapter by vouching that he is "very frightening and impressive," essentially allowing him to hide behind false praise from people who are of less power in the ghostly world (since presumably it is the living who are being frightened by ghosts). This is the very opposite of chivalry. As for bravery, Sir Nicholas admits in OotP, "I was afraid of death," indeed unusually so, because he became a ghost to avoid it and "very few wizards choose that path" (ch. 38). Sir Nick, then, is not a paragon of Gryffindor excellence.
Hufflepuff: The Fat Friar
Hufflepuffs are supposed to be "just and loyal," "patient," and "true and unafraid of toil," according to the Sorting Hat. The first glimpse we see of the Fat Friar (his argument with Sir Nick in Book 1 over whether Peeves can attend the feast) seems to show his patience with Peeves, but it in fact shows his unwillingness to be just. Peeves has proven himself consistently to be disruptive to social gatherings, and the Fat Friar has mistaken forgiving him with allowing him to continue unchecked. It is harder to draw conclusions on the other Hufflepuff traits for the Friar, given his limited presence in the books, but the description of the Fat Friar recalls Friar Tuck from the Robin Hood legends. While Friar Tuck was known for robbing the rich to give to the poor, he was also known for consistently using the money from the rich to indulge himself, thus benefiting from the perceived spiritual authority of a monk's vow of poverty without going through the hard work of keeping that vow. This is hardly being loyal or true to his word, nor being unafraid of toil. The Fat Friar, like Sir Nick, has not shown the best of his House.
Ravenclaw: The Grey Lady/Helena Ravenclaw
The Sorting Hat song says that Ravenclaws are "wise," with "a ready mind" and "wit and learning." While there is not much information on Helena Ravenclaw, we know that she told Tom Riddle where the diadem was because he flattered her (hardly wise behavior) and then concealed that she had done so until the last possible moment (even less wise). She also tells Harry her true identity without initially meaning to do so, which is not generally an indication of a ready mind.
Slytherin: The Bloody Baron
The Slytherin ideal as expressed in the Sorting Hat song, as I've discussed in this meta, hinges on friendship. By stabbing his desired lover, the Baron fails the friendship test. He also fails the more typical tests of Slytherin "cunning" and "achieving [one's] ends," as there is nothing cunning about getting carried away by anger, doing something you don't intend to do (rather than coolly "using any means," or, in other words, doing what you do intend to do), and then failing to achieve anything resembling your goal (in this case, getting the girl).
Case Study: Severus Snape and the Bloody Baron
It's interesting to see what happens when we contrast the Baron with Severus Snape, a Slytherin as he ought to be. (As for why Snape can be used as an example of the Slytherin ideal, indeed the best such example in the series — one reason among many is that Harry, in the epilogue, uses Snape as his single, sufficient example that Slytherins can be truly good.)
At first glance, the Baron and Snape seem incredibly similar. They are both described as being "gaunt" (the Baron in Book 1, Snape in CoS) and silent (Snape says "Silence!" quite frequently). They perform roles of keeping difficult beings in line; the Baron is "the only one who can control" Peeves (PS/SS ch. 7), and Snape "had the gift of keeping a class silent without effort" (PS/SS ch. 8) and has made himself known to Ron Weasley, likely via Fred and George, as someone not to be crossed. In HBP, we learn the Baron haunts the Astronomy Tower, only to see Snape kill Dumbledore on the Astronomy Tower in that very book.
In death, at first it seems the similarities have come to a climax. The Baron's "blank staring eyes" (PS/SS ch. 7) have always sounded like Snape's "cold and empty" ones a chapter later, but at Snape's death his eyes explicitly get the descriptor "blank" as well. Snape's death scene leaves him (surely) covered in blood like the Baron, with "silvery blue" memories coming from him as well, like the Baron's silver blood, and the visual seems complete. Yet the language surrounding Snape's death dwells on the lack of blood: "Snape looked as though there was no blood left in him." Although there is surely blood all over him, the book does not mention this, though it does not shy away from doing so for the Baron. This is our first indicator that all is not as it seems.
When we arrive at the Prince's Tale, we already know the Baron's backstory. (Incidentally, the titles are another connector and differentiator between the characters; it's better to be a Prince than a Baron.) The Baron is the sort of person we might easily assume Snape to be, on a cursory read of the Prince's Tale... but they are actually very different. Let's break down the Grey Lady's narration in DH ch. 31, because the parallels and contrasts are remarkably complex:
The Baron "had long loved" a woman who "spurned his advances." (Snape certainly loved Lily for most of his life, but she rejected his apology — there is no indication of his ever making "advances" that Lily spurned.)
The Baron "would not rest" until he had found Helena to pass along Rowena's pleas for reconciliation. (Snape shows similar determination, but that determination is to find parental figure Dumbledore for Lily's benefit, not the other way around. Finding Dumbledore, he has cause to think, will result in his death, not in any romantic benefit.)
The Baron is hot-tempered (this is true of Snape).
The Baron, however, "became violent" (Snape is remarkably nonviolent, given how often his situation warrants the use of force).
The Baron is "furious at [Helena's] refusal." (No indication at all of this from Snape; he seems to take Lily's refusal without anger towards her.)
The Baron is also "jealous of [Helena's] freedom." (Snape is happy Lily has power as a witch. He does have an instance of saying "I won't let you —" but in context, where they're talking about how Lily's got the wrong idea about James, it seems probable that he would have said "I won't let you be taken in." When Lily gets angry over this phrasing, he rephrases "at once": "I didn't mean — I just don't want to see you made a fool of —" and then he points out that James, who fancies Lily, is not what everyone thinks he is. All this supports Lily's freedom, as people being deceived are not free. Snape is described as having "bitterness" here, but it's towards James, not Lily.)
The Baron then stabs Helena in a rush of anger. (Snape unintentionally and indirectly brought about Lily's death by relaying a prophecy which he did not believe had anything to do with her or her family. The two situations are clearly different.)
"When he saw what he had done, he was overcome with remorse." (True of both of them.)
The Baron then kills himself. (We know Snape was also suicidal — "I wish I were dead" — but he chooses life in the face of this; in that moment, he sees living will let him help right his wrongs, protect Lily's son, and destroy Voldemort. By the time he dies, Snape has regained a sense of purpose, and he is struggling vainly with the enchanted cage because he wants to live.)
Lastly, the final thing we learn of the Bloody Baron specifically is that "he wears his chains as an act of penitence" — but these chains are an obvious bit of virtue-signaling, as they don't pose any real restriction on the Baron's activities. (Snape's constraints as a spy, on the other hand, chain him far more wholly.)
Perhaps it is partly due to these reasons that we do not see Snape in any form of preservation-after-death, whether a portrait or a Resurrection Stone shade. He is entirely distinct from the ghosts; he has succeeded where they have not, gone on where they have failed to tread, and he needs no moderating version of himself to show what might have been. His legacy is a living child's middle name — a memory and inspiration, but not a command to repeat him over again, for there is no need to do so.

Do you have any tip on writing character that smarter than you? Like I need to write about prowl solving case, but I barely passed my math exam.
I do have a few tips!
One, research. The more you know about a subject matter yourself, the more you can BS your way through it. You don't have to go write a thesis or anything like that, but knowing key phrases, terms, and ideas can help you make crap up on the fly. For example, if you want to write a battle scene, do a quick look into a historical figure who you want to model your character after. Look at an interesting battle and analyze key elements. Then take the vague overview of it and go buck wild. Throw it into a blender in order to create a believable plan/tactic for your character to follow.
Two, foreshadow and develop a reputation. This will cover for a lot of things for your character and save you the slog of explaining everything. If your character is established to have a reputation for being intelligent and/or capable, you can have your character glance over things and leave readers confident that something was actually accomplished. Of course, you need to be careful with this. If you establish your character to be a brutal strategist and then have said character go out of their way to care about civilians the next moment, you will run into problems with consistency.
Three, include other characters in the scene. You can draw attention away from your own lack of knowledge by having several things moving at once to add to the overall scene. A character can look far more complex and wise if they are seen interacting with others and using different tools to help accomplish their goals. Not everyone can be Sherlock Holmes. Some characters can express their cunning and intelligence via interacting with others and through dialogue. Be careful not to be too hamfisted with it though, otherwise it feels forced. I personally tend to spend chapters upon chapters foreshadowing and establishing the capabilities and reputation of a character that is meant to be smarter than me.
Four, lean on a character's traits. If you are writing a character with highly noticeable traits, you can lean on those to help rationalize their actions even if they end up being inconsistent later. I am personally a huge fan of this since emotion can make an otherwise very intelligent character brutally ineffective in the right situation.
Regarding your example of Prowl, I would first study whatever it is he is meant to be looking into. If it's a murder, I'd look into a few interesting real life murder cases for example. I personally studied true crime to write Prowl chapters in my fic. Then, apply that basic knowledge and have Prowl be capable of assessing the situation quickly and logically. Next, or perhaps also first, I would establish his reputation and background to give him a base of knowledge that is believable. This can be done through background dialogue, his thoughts, or through setting details.
Then, to really sell it, I would have Prowl contact associates, dig up old data, and otherwise showcase his knowledge base and intelligence through organic means. Pulling up other characters can make him seem far more calculating than you, the author, may be. And lastly, I would pull on his lack of empathy to help guide how he makes his decisions. This way, you can still slip up a bit as an Author in his conclusions so long as they relate back to Prowl's weaknesses somehow.
These are rather vague, but I hope this helps!

Everybody fucking minds and always doing it the no sexy way 😞😔
Do love no war babygirls
If we're very decided we can solve all of this in bed! The sexy way
Or play UNO and whoever wins is the top
Sincerely, after watching the dress... Totally would think they're doing some kinky shit 🤣
Beelzebub: we can hold hands if you want 🥺 totally platonic no second intentions here
Percy: *didn't hear anything, cared no shit for what's happening, wants a hot dog with meat that probably is from a rat* what did you say?
Percy watching Sally being happier without her, her friends being happy with some girl... Queen, totally trauma, I'd cry and beg my mom to hold me even if that makes us miserable
Beelzebub, your yandere tendencies are showing. Giving her traumas and comforting her after. Get a man that can do both (please don't get you a man that can do that)
(Give us moooooore I'm starving)
(Waiting for what you're going to do with that, Percy progress- maybe fall is the correct word- is showing queen. Love it)
Anyway, can someone please draw them on their date? 😭 That's so cute, they're literally so perfect together, like that couple that is the black cat boyfriend with his golden retriever girlfriend and they're precious 💞
(Beelzebub worrying about her suicidal thoughts and he admitting he doesn't want to die so much... *Cheff kiss* we love an emo boy that is self aware)
Now, Loki?
Loki, my boy, your panic is beautiful to watch, horrific to endure.
I'm wondering how they are going to deal with being in the same harem? Fight to be the favorite concubine? Seduce their way to Percy's bed?
Percy: you're just a pathetic simp pretending to be an alpha man and you just go destroy mode whenever you're confronted with your own emotions. You love me so much that is making you look pathetic
Loki:
Tumblr media
Him switching sides in the moment he accepts he loves her is gold.
He may be crazy, sadistic and a psychopath, but by the gods he's not going to fool himself.
He loves the girl, now he needs to kill all the other people that love the same girl.
Assassination! His favorite hobby! She's so much fun and they haven't even had sex yet! Wonderful wife indeed
And starting with Beelzebub is a wise move, you know? From all of them he's the one that she's the most comfortable with, he could play the slow game he's the one she'd fall at the end (you know, once she forgets about the other world, that he could make happen too).
Right now Beelzebub is that best friend that is the one for her (the other, even if I love them, aren't so close to her). He just needs to wait, fool her and she'd be his
(as if the other are going to let that happen, but is the scent, you know?)
Loki is right to be jealous of him, no one (with a dick) is close to her like him, she's herself with him and is the only one that likes him with his depressive tendencies.
He could say: Percy, for medical reasons, undress yourself and let me study your body. It may end in sexy medical porn, depending on my self control
And she wouldn't see no wrong.
Is Beelzebub! Her bestie! She can trust him with her security (poor navy girl, you can't never trust a man that much). Even if he has feelings for her she wouldn't worry about him doing anything to her, just worry about the uncomfortable situation.
Wondering if they're going to guilty trappe her to stay (You made us love you! We are learning to be open and to accept love and you want to leave us? Leave us in a world where we're fated to yearn for you for eternity and be alone again?), Percy would suffer whatever if she thinks she's saving people, such a naive and dumb girl, too good to this world.
This whole situation is pure chaos, they're planning so many things just to crash with each other. Would be funny to see them working together but also don't know how that situation would happen.
Anyway, thanks for the amazing chapter Queen! 👑
im sorry but this part cracked me up 😭
Tumblr media
"for medical reasons we may need to fuck 😔"
"yeah sure ok"
😭😭😭
IM SO GLAD YOU ENJOYED THIS CHAPTER!!
i had a blast writing this chapter lmao, and im currently writing another chapter (not the next one) that's gonna be even better
maybe... idk. all i can say is that beel digs an even deeper grave in this one chapter and i just love watching him lose his shit

A Study of the Heart and Brain (Book 3) Chapter Eleven
Father Figure! Sherlock Holmes x Teen! Reader
Chapter Eleven: Delayed Murder
Summary: Sherlock continues his speech, but (Y/N) realizes something is wrong at the wedding.
Present…
“Married,” said Sherlock as he arrived at the end of what he, John, and (Y/N) had uncovered on the case. “Obvious, really. Our Mayfly Man was trying to escape the suffocating chains of domesticity and instead of endless nights in watching telly or going to barbecues with awful, dreadful, boring people he couldn’t stand, he used his wits, cleverness, and powers of disguise to play the field. He was…” Sherlock trailed off as he noticed he’d lost the audience. He’d gotten a little too lost in his own mind as he went back over the case.
Next to him, John cleared his throat, and Sherlock focused.
(Y/N) just sat there and furrowed their brow. They were back and stuck on the secrets being the only link. Marriage didn’t feel like the answer. There still felt like there was something more.
“On second thought, I should probably have told you about the Elephant in the Room,” continued Sherlock. “However, it does further illustrate how invaluable John is to me. I can read a crime scene the way he can understand a human being. I used to think that’s what made me special, quite frankly. But word to the wise: should any of you require the service of either (Y/N) or myself, we will solve your murder, but it takes John Watson to save your life. Trust me on that—I should know. He’s saved mine and (Y/N)’s so many times in so many ways. This blog is the story of three people and their frankly ridiculous adventures of murder, mystery, and mayhem. But from now on, there’s a new story—a bigger adventure. Friends and family, pray raise your glasses and be upstanding.” Sherlock raised his glass, and the guests stood and did the same.
(Y/N) stood, but they were just following what everyone else did. Unsolved cases were on their mind. First Bainbridge was nearly killed with no rhyme or reason and without a weapon. Then the disappearing date working his way up from someone separate from their employer to someone who would be close. As if someone was trying to get closer to someone to be able to kill them. Of course, then he’d need a way to kill the person, but (Y/N) didn’t need to know that yet, they needed to know who the Mayfly Man was and who he was trying to get close to and then (Y/N) could figure out how he was planning to kill whoever—
“Today begins the adventures of Mary Elizabeth Watson and John Hamish Watson. The two reasons why every single of us is here today,” said Sherlock.
            Crash!
(Y/N)’s glass fell to the ground. Everyone turned towards them in surprise.
            Hamish. Hamish, Hamish, Hamish.
            “Annoying. Called John…Hamish…”
That’s what Sherlock had told (Y/N) Tessa had said. She knew his middle name, which he hated. He never used it except for the wedding invitations. (Y/N) knew the truth in the instant: the Mayfly Man was here. He was going to kill a guest at the wedding.
            “(Y/N)?” said Sherlock.
“Sorry,” said (Y/N) absently, eyes coursing over the guests. “Sorry.”
And since he had to be able to kill someone without bringing in a weapon—anyone who knew John Watson knew that he would notice a weapon—he needed to kill without one.
            Like Bainbridge…
(Y/N) stood and cleared their throat. All eyes were on them. They wanted to freeze up, but they had a job to do. They had to find the victim. (Y/N) had to make sure they didn’t die.
“Sorry, everyone,” they said. They squared their shoulders, and they stepped down from the head table. “I just—I realized I would like a chance to speak.”
Sherlock and John exchanged glances, and Sherlock furrowed his brow. (Y/N) had figured something out. He knew his kid. This was intentional.
“You see, I met John Hamish Watson when I was young teen,” said (Y/N). Their gaze flicked to Sherlock as they said “Hamish,” and his eyes lit up as he made the connection, his mind quickly going to what (Y/N) had realized.
They continued, “And, listen, I have a great dad, but Sherlock isn’t the most responsible adult on the planet.” Several laughs and snorts rippled through the crowd in agreement. “So I’m glad John is in my life. He takes care of me and Sherlock and always saves everyone he can. He makes everyone’s lives better.”
(Y/N) walked around the different tables, eyes coursing over the group. They gazed for a moment at the photographer, but they continued on. He didn’t matter right then. (Besides, there was both Sherlock and (Y/N) to handle that part, and they knew Sherlock had it).
“And, uh, he makes me and Sherlock want to be better,” said (Y/N). “So even if there is a murderer in the room, I want to be like John and help the victim, first.” They looked at Sherlock and John. “Because that’s what we’re meant to do, especially with Vatican Cameos.”
John stiffened, and Sherlock nodded in understanding. Someone might die in the room.
“What did they say?” asked Mary in confusion. “What’s that mean?”
“Battle Stations. Someone’s going to die,” said John. “Who is it, Sherlock?”
“(Y/N)’s getting there,” said Sherlock, watching (Y/N)’s eyes scan the crowd. “I’ll handle the other.” He kept his gaze on (Y/N) in case they were in danger while he typed out a message to Lestrade.
His phone dinged, and Lestrade frowned as he opened it. Then, he raised his eyebrows in surprise and looked up at Sherlock. The detective nodded, and Lestrade rose. “Sorry, sorry, need the loo,” said Lestrade, walking out of the room awkwardly.
The part of (Y/N)’s mind focused on the killer finally switched off, and every part of their brain honed in on the possible victim. They clapped and smiled around at everyone. “Alright, so, John loves a good murder mystery, so let’s play a game. Who would you kill here?”
Everyone looked at them in alarm, and (Y/N) waved a hand. They couldn’t really do speeches, but they could solve cases. They were in their element. “Relax. This is just a game. Now, some of you could be easy. John has already proved pretty easy to test compounds on—” John frowned in confusion “—so it wouldn’t need to be a wedding. Several of you here are a little too easy to kill, so again, it wouldn’t need to be here.”
(Y/N) folded their hands and turned to face the head table with a smirk. “It would have to be the celebration itself. It would have to be the only opportunity for murder, so clearly someone who doesn’t go out much. A recluse.”
Mary and John’s eyes widened, and Sherlock damn-near grinned in pride as he and (Y/N) arrived at the conclusions simultaneously. (Y/N) was growing sharper, more observant.
“A recluse with a small household staff with high turnover. The staff would include at least a few security workers, a gardener, a cook, a maid, and even a private nurse,” continued (Y/N) excitedly as they made all the connections. “And then you have to kill them in public, which is impossible, but Bainbridge was, so there is a way, and that means the two must be similar in some way, and the only significant thing about Bainbridge was his post as a guard.” (Y/N)’s ramble finished, and they took a deep breath as all the adrenaline kicked in. “Uniform. Recluse.” Sholto.
(Y/N) stopped, and everyone stared. They smiled. “Everyone, there will be a brief interlude! Raise your glasses to the bride and groom!”
The guests looked at each other in confusion and hesitantly raised their glasses. (Y/N) darted up to the head table.
“Someone’s going to murder Major Sholto,” said (Y/N).
            John and Sherlock stood.
            “Let’s go,” said Sherlock.
            “I’m coming, too,” said Mary.
“No, no, it could be dangerous,” said John worriedly.
“It’s my wedding, too,” said Mary firmly.
“No time for this,” said (Y/N), scanning the room. “He’s gone.”
“He’s being roomed here,” said Mary.
Sherlock led the charge out of the reception room to find Sholto.
“What room is he in?” asked John as they ran.
            “No idea,” said (Y/N).
“Why should we know?” asked Sherlock.
“You two remember everything!” cried John.
“We have to delete something,” said Sherlock.
            “I just didn’t care,” said (Y/N).
“207,” said Mary, saving the day.
The entire group ran up the stairs down the hall to Room 207.
Sherlock banged on the door. “Major Sholto? Major Sholto!”
            “Major Sholto!” called (Y/N).
“If someone’s about to make an attempt on my life, it won’t be the first time. I’m ready,” declared Sholto. He had heard the explanation (Y/N) gave and realized it was him as soon as they said “recluse.”
“Major, let us in,” said John.
“Kick the door down,” said Mary.
“I really wouldn’t. I have a gun in my hand and a lifetime of unfortunate reflexes,” said Sholto.
“You’re not safe in there. Whoever’s after you, we know that a locked room doesn’t stop him,” said Sherlock.
“The invisible man with the invisible night,” said Sholto.
“Yes, the man who tried to kill Bainbridge was practicing for you because he wears a uniform similar to yours,” said (Y/N).
“But we don’t know how he does it, so we can’t stop him, and that means he’ll do it again,” said Sherlock.
            “Solve it, then,” said Sholto.
            “I’m sorry?” said Sherlock.
“You’re the famous Sherlock and (Y/N) Holmes—” (Y/N) blinked at the last name they were given “—Solve the case. On you go. Tell me how he did it, and I’ll open the door,” said Sholto.
“Please, this is no time for games. Just let us in! You’re in danger!” cried John.
“So are you, as long as you’re here,” said Sholto. “Please, leave me. Despite my reputation, I really don’t approve of collateral damage.”
            “Solve it,” said Mary.
“Sorry?” said Sherlock, and (Y/N) frowned and shifted hesitantly.
“Solve it and he’ll open the door, like he said,” said Mary.
“If we couldn’t solve it before, how can we solve it now?” said Sherlock.
“Because it matters now,” said Mary.
“What are you talking about?” Sherlock looked at John. “What’s she talking about?”
            “She’s right,” said John.
            “John, we’re trying,” said (Y/N).
“We tried before, and we can’t now,” said Sherlock.
John leveled a look on Sherlock. “You are not puzzle solvers—you never have been. You’re drama queens!” Sherlock and (Y/N) looked at him in offended silence, and John barreled on, “Now, there is a man in there about to die. The game is on. Solve it!”
“I’m doing it, but I’m not a drama queen,” muttered (Y/N).
“No, this is an ‘enrichment’ activity, according to Sherlock,” said John, rolling his eyes.
“Bainbridge was chosen because he was a guard. That’s similar to Major Sholto in his uniform,” murmured (Y/N).
“So is the job the link or the uniform,” said Sherlock.
“Uniform,” decided (Y/N), and Sherlock nodded.
“Wound was here,” said Sherlock, placing his hand over his stomach.
“Belt!” said (Y/N) excitedly as Sherlock’s eyes widened. They spoke the realization he had made at the same moment.
Sherlock knocked on the door. “Major Sholto, no one’s coming to kill you. I’m afraid you’ve already been killed several hours ago.”
“What did you say?” came Sholto’s voice from within.
“Don’t take off your belt,” said (Y/N). Upon hearing curious silence, they continued, “Bainbridge was stabbed through his belt while on duty. It’s tight and high on the waist, so he couldn’t feel it. Major Sholto wears his uniform similarly, so he didn’t notice, either.”
“The belt would bind the flesh together when it was tied tight, and when you took it off…” John trailed off.
“You have a locked room killer as you bleed out within five minutes from just taking off your belt,” said (Y/N).
“Delayed action stabbing. All the time in the world to create an alibi,” said Sherlock. Silence. “Major Sholto?”
“So, I was to be killed by my uniform. How appropriate,” said Sholto.
“They solved the case, Major. You’re supposed to open the door now. A deal is a deal,” said Mary.
“I’m not even supposed to have this anymore,” admitted Sholto. “They gave me special dispensation to keep it. I couldn’t imagine life without this uniform. I suppose—given the circumstances—I don’t have to…When so many want you dead, it hardly seems good manners to argue.”
“Whatever you’re doing in there, James, stop it, right now. I will kick this door down,” shouted John.
“Mr. Holmes, you and I are similar, I think,” said Sholto.
“Yes, I think we are,” said Sherlock.
“There’s a proper time to die, isn’t there?” remarked Sholto.
“Of course there is,” said Sherlock.
“And one should embrace it when it comes, like a soldier,” said Sholto.
“Of course, but not at John Watson’s wedding,” said (Y/N) sharply, their voice ringing clear and true. “You wouldn’t harm him like that.”
“We wouldn’t do that to him, would me? You and me—we would never do that to John Watson,” said Sherlock.
            Silence.
John shifted nervously. “I’m gonna break it down.”
The lock clicked, and Mary grabbed John before he hurt himself.
“No, wait, wait, you won’t have to,” she said.
The door opened, and Sholto stepped out, still in his uniform with the belt tight around his waist.
“I believe I am in need of medical attention,” he said formally.
“I believe I am your doctor,” said John, stepping into the room with Sholto. Mary followed him in.
“We did it,” said (Y/N), their shoulders sagging in relief.
Sherlock reached out and patted their shoulder. “You saw it first. You made sure he had a chance.”
“Well, you were right,” said (Y/N). “John makes us want to help people.”
Sherlock smiled. “At least you have one good role model.”
(Y/N) leaned in and let Sherlock hug them from the side. “I have a pretty good dad.”
Sherlock squeezed their shoulder. They were father and child, and they were back as a team.

you guys. you guys you guys. i think i know what i want from the final season of the penumbra podcast. i have spent the past ten minutes pacing around my room. yesterday i read up to chapter 17 of prydon's fic separate but syncopated (https://archiveofourown.org/works/30943430/chapters/76417991) which let's be honest, you've probably read already. it's phenomenal. if you haven't, you should.
so i've been thinking. i just really want to go back to brahma. i want to go back to brahma and take down the guardian angel system.
the thing is, the junoverse is a very character driven storyline, and i love that about it. the second citadel is more event driven i think, and it was more difficult for me to get into that storyline and stick with it (i'm weak i'm sorry). for example, although the first season focuses a lot on juno solving the whole martian artefact doodah, back then the penumbra crew were still finding their feet.
then junoverse season 2 happened, and the entire point of that season was basically "get juno over his trauma" (that's why it was so long oh my god). sure, there was a whole plot with ramses and the theia souls, but i think we can all agree that was secondary to juno's character development.
next, season 3. season 3 is definitely character driven, you literally can't deny it. it focuses on each member of the carte blanche in turn, and it uses the plot, finding the curemother prime, as a secondary tool to further the true point of the season: getting to know the characters.
season 4 i'm a little less certain about because i'm typing this post straight into tumblr fresh out of my brain (if anyone wants to help out with the analysis i'd love that). but i think the point of season 4 is to test and showcase the bonds of the carte blanche with each other, and juno rescuing them all is not only a good story, but also a good way to show off the relationships they built in season 3. his relationship with nureyev is shown through periodic reading of the journal, and juno's copious inner monologues (i say like i'm one to talk when all of these thoughts are swirling around in my own head).
then, season 5. the point of this season mirrors that of season 2, but this time, we need to get nureyev over his trauma. this is way trickier, because we're not inside nureyev's head, we're still in juno's. it's still character driven because the aim is to help nureyev, but the plot is given by juno having to chase him across the galaxy. hence, juno's hesitation when he finally finds nureyev.
well, steel, you've caught him. now what the hell are you going to do with him?
there is no plot to drive the character study anymore. our goal was to help nureyev, and juno (poor juno) has done all he can. the ball falls squarely into nureyev's court now, and juno has no say in the plot of the rest of the story. this is why i have been chewing myself alive since the last episode — we know what's next for the characters emotionally, but we have absolutely zero idea what's happening next plot-wise. it's killing me.
(what was the point of this post again?)
OH WAIT I'VE GOT IT. so. since our whole thing for this season is helping nureyev, and we all want him to go batshit fucking insane, i really want nureyev to go back to brahma, and finish what he started two decades ago. i think it's the perfect circular story arc to keep them occupied while nureyev heals emotionally from the fallout from everything going on with slip.
also, sorry to get real for a second, but i've just been tearing myself apart being morally outraged at the world we live in, and the fact that i'm barely able to do anything about it. maybe one day i could, but until then, it would be nice to see my favourite space gays set an example.
now, i know there's complications with this. nureyev refused to take the guardian angel system down in the first place because of the damage it would cause, and i'm willing to bet he hasn't excised that moral core just yet, no matter how hard he's trying. but i'm sure they can find a way to make it work. they have rita, after all!!
they're definitely hinting at a homecoming arc for juno. i think nureyev needs one too, is all.

i know youre not a studyblr but as a senior can you please give any suggestions on managing 12th boards and competitive exams (im a jee aspirant but i still wanna know how you managed it all) hope its not a bother!
hiii sure!! feel free to reach out whenever, im happy to help <33
okay so. what i suggest you do (assuming you'll be starting 11th this year):
1. Enter 11th std. Don't get intimidated by others. Stay focused on understanding the concepts of all chapters, school exams toh derivations and formulas rattkar bhi ho jayenge. Clear concepts now rather than saving it for 'later'.
2. Practice all PYQs and whatever questions you get for maths. You can only do maths with practice × 100000. It's honestly quite tough, or it's too lengthy.
3. Fully strengthen the 'easier chapters' NOW. Own the knowledge like you made the concept.
4. Enter 12th. Let go of 11th from april-september and fully finish 12th std as soon as possible. Cover all concepts (I believe physics in 12th is relatively easier) and learn all formulas by your midterm exam time at school.
5. USE YOUR SUMMER VACATIONS WELL. COVER ALL BACKLOGS THEN AND THERE. (I regret procrastinating soo much 😭)
6. Just revise 12th entirely and focus on PYQs during October.
7. Nov-Dec go through 11th std again thoroughly, don't take too much stress for preboard cause hopefully you've prepared for 12th strong enough already. Don't take preboard marks to heart!!
8. January, do only and only JEE PYQs and cover whatever backlogs you have. Physics formulas must be learn to the heart. Understand organic chemistry basics very very well, cause it will help predict complex product formations too even if you don't remember the actual reaction!! Maths again, only practice or God can save you 💀 (I'm sorry I'm really scared of maths so maybe this is a biased reply!)
9. Now you'll have board practicals likely in Jan end or Feb only, just make sure your file is complete and you know the basic procedure of experiments. Don't stress too much about viva, usually your own teachers will help you through it!! Focus on practicals as it helps with conceptual JEE Qs too!!
10. Now simply focus on learning derivations and long answer type questions for upcoming boards. You've done enough for JEE and it's time to strength subjective answers. Focus only on cbse board PYQs and again, don't stress too much. Be confident you've worked so hard!!
11. Now the April attempt. Again start focusing on 11th at least 2 weeks before your JEE date. Revise 11th very well.
12. Lastly, solve sample papers only. During the last 3 days I recommend not studying. Only sample papers. With full syllabus. No chapter-wise or topic-wise. But yes if you still don't have concepts cleared, definitely do that asap. Still try to be fully prepared 3 days before the actual exam!!
That's all <33 I made it as detailed as possible for anyone to refer to. Set a goal and follow through guys!! I know it's super hard and yeah 11th mein vo feeling nahi aati, but trust me, if you can push yourself hard in 11th, you won't have to worry too much for the April attempt for sureeee.
All the best <33

Taking notes 📝
I'm only a few chapters into Scorch Trials bc the past few days have been a hustle, but I'm still Aware enough of some things to be having Ideas.
WCKD is honestly fucking WILD for the shit they put the Gladers through. Like. What the fuck kind of experiment is this supposed to be?
Also wondering, do they ever specify Thomas's involvement with creating the Maze? I understand he helped design it, but do they ever say how? Because it's insane to think of a kid coming up with some of this stuff BUT. I could see it playing if WCKD gave it to him as a kind of hypothetical puzzle or a problem to solve. Like, he doesn't realise this is A Real Thing they're making, to him it's just a set of variables and possibilities, it's a blind test. He'd still be a baby (timeline-wise, he'd be, what? 13? When the Maze Trial actually started and even younger during the development?) who wants to please the adults that have been taking care of (conditioning) him, and Thomas likes puzzles, he excels at them, it's fun and satisfying. And don't they say that the other kids would "just disappear" one day, and he didn't know where they went (into the Maze). Only once he's a little older do they actually lift the blind and let him know, and we all know how well THAT works out.
(I fully understand that this will probably be Jossed when I finish reading, but it's an interesting thought to have.)
so Fever Code does go into detail about the kids’ lives before entering the Maze (focusing on Thomas of course), and Thomas is fully aware that his non-Elite friends will be going into the Maze he created and designed (and he was a baby :( so fucking young and completely traumatized)
it does wonders for his guilt complex, but he’s able to convince himself that who he’s doing is for the greater good. they’re finding a cure to save everyone. that should outweigh the actions he’s doing, right? right???? (note: his main motivation for finding a cure is because Newt is not immune and is one of his closest friends)
the Maze was a puzzle WCKD asked Thomas to create and design: “how do they create a Maze with no exit without learned hopelessness coming quickly AND induces their stress response in order to study specific enzymes for a cure?”
he did not design the Scorch Trials, though. this experiment was already put into place (and i think it was supposed to be separate???), but Thomas was requested to design the Maze. they were Ava’s prodigies, raised very young with college level knowledge and set to be the future leaders of that knowledge
and Thomas trusted Ava. trusted her and her motivations for finding a cure which is why he was able to convince himself for so long. but he learns too late that trust was wrong

Can u give me some suggestions fr physics
Physics? Are u a JEE or NEET aspirant? Or are u aiming for boards and preparing SAT?
Broooo. I am in 11th. I am the last person you should ask a suggestion from. It’s better if u ask someone who already cracked NEET or JEE. But my sister did make it to AIIMS Delhi. So I may help you with what I learnt from her.
For JEE:
BM Sharma and HC Verma are cool ig. There also follow this publisher called Cengage. Most of my friends who are pursuing JEE follow those and they end up scoring really well in mock tests.
For NEET:
1. Read SL ARORA book and solve “problems for practice” in the preliminary level
2. Then solve past 36 years NEET chapter wise question bank.
3. This with the topping of one NCERT book read and it’s numerical are perfect combo in my opinion.
4. You could also sign up for a Test Series. It pressurises you to study a lot.
For Boards:
1. NCERT
2. NCERT
3 NCERT
No other option. It’s basically reading NCERT so many time that u can recite it out.
Anyway I didn’t pass 11th or give NEET or anything yet. It is what I BELIEVE THAT NEEDS TO BE DONE. It’s no way a full proof way and even I m in the process of trial and error. Also, different techniques work for different people. Some people are visual learners. For them, watching YouTube videos maybe a better option. Some learn better by listening to lectures. For them listening to the Walter Lewin’s lectures on YouTube May turn out to be OP. Strictly speaking I m not comfortable with either. I like reading a variety of books.
If u like reading a variety of books too then after doing all these stuff study some study material (if u signed up for any big tuition centre like ALLEN and all) and after that u May look at the study material you received from tuition houses (although low key if u understand the books it’s unnecessary I feel).

If any discrepancy is found, candidates can raise objections within the given time frame by paying a nominal fee. The final result is declared after reviewing these objections.
Arrival of Christianity in India
Christianity was introduced in India in 52 A.D. by St. Thomas the Apostle, who landed in Kerala. He is believed to have established some of the earliest Christian communities in India. Later, Portuguese missionaries, especially during the 15th and 16th centuries, further spread the religion in regions like Goa, Tamil Nadu, and parts of Northeast India.
Christian missionaries played a key role in setting up schools, colleges, and hospitals. Today, Christianity is one of the prominent religions in India and has deeply influenced Indian culture, education, and social work.

Key features of the PM Internship Yojana include:
Duration: 2 to 6 months

The scheme helps bridge the gap between education and employment by enhancing the skills and confidence of young Indians.
Maths Books for Competitive Exams
