Whistler, Feb 2024
Vancouver Food | Whistler | Travel Tips
Tumblr media
Just 1.5 hours north of Vancouver is the world class Whistler Ski Resort, host of 2010 Winter Olympics. This is our second winter in a row skiing at Whistler with the kids. There are actually two mountains, Whistler with more gentle green and blue trails and Blackcomb with more challenging blue and black trails, our fave.
Blackcomb
Last winter when we visited during Feb vacation week, it was record cold, -10 F, -30 F with windchill. This time the weather's a lot more comfortable, but there's less snow and the condition wasn't the best. The best place to go both times is top of Glacier Express, the view is spectacular.
Tumblr media
On the right off the lift is Blue Line, one of the best trails with great view of the valley below. Off of that you can even find some powder on a good day.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
From the left side of the lift, our kids and family hiked up to top of Spanky's Ladder, it's challenging to climb up, especially at the steep end. But the runs down Ruby or other bowls are quite exciting.
Tumblr media
From left side you can take Crystal Traverse to Crystal Express, our second favorite lift with lots of nice blue and black trails. Our other favorite is Arthur's Choice, a black gladed trail. Next to it is Outer Limits, which is steeper and has more dense trees.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
7th Heaven
One the best areas in the whole ski resort is 7th Heaven, which you can access via 7th Avenue off of the Jersey Cream Express (from Glacier Lodge) or the Blackcomb Gondola. It gets more sun and has both groomed and lots of soft powder and glades to explore. The only downside is everyone's here, and the line is often 15 minutes or more.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Peak 2 Peak
Between Whistler and Blackcomb Mountains is the Peak 2 Peak Tram, which holds the world record for longest unsupported (free) span lift and longest continuous lift system.
Tumblr media
It's fun to take the tram, whether on a partly foggy or beautiful sunny day. The view of the valley below and mountains all around is breathtaking. You can also see down in the valley the Fitzsimmons Creek power plant that produces enough power to cover the annual energy consumption of the whole ski resort.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Whistler Peak
Once you get off the Peak 2 Peak, or if you take Whistler Village Gondola all the way up, you can take Peak Express to go to top of the mountain. On a sunny day the view is spectacular.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Unfortunately, it was only sunny for maybe one out of 6 days we were there. Most of the time the peak is covered in fog, and sometimes even near white-out conditions. People would tell me to look and stay between the poles.
Tumblr media
The condition mid mountain and up are better, lower to the village level it can be quite slushy.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Logistics
We stayed at Whistler Village the first year, closer to restaurants and shops. The second year we stayed at the Blackcomb side. Either way we found it easier to park at Parking lots #6 and 7, to avoid the 5 min walk carrying skis to our condo. From the lot you can take Excalibur Gondola at the midstation with shorter lines, then Excelerator Express to Glacial Creek Lodge, where you can then take Glacier Express up the mountain or Jersey Cream Express to Peak 2 Peak and 7th Heaven.
Food
For lunch, we mostly ate at the Glacier Creek Lodge, with a great view on a sunny day. It has the best food, pork belly ramen with tonkotsu All the lodges also offer delicious danishes, with everything from sppinach to guava to lemon filling. The best flavor is cherry and cheese cake. My kids also enjoyed the poutine there.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Whistler Village Dining
Down in the Whistler Village, getting a dinner reservation is often hard, so show up early e.g. 4:30pm if u want to make the first seating.
We'd recommend delicious Mexican seafood from Mexican Corner, probably my husband's favorite, serving an ultra-fine mango margarita.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yummy sushi especially local albacore tuna from Sushi Village, probably the most popular restaurant in town. Both of these restaurants will have long waits, so put your name down ASAP, and the wait is often less than they tell you if u just missed the first seating at 4:30.
Tumblr media
We found out about dinner reservation challenge the hard way, and just walked into the Indian Masala Bistro, which turned out to have delicious food. Check out especially their Malai Kofta. Just note their rice has to be ordered separately and the naan is rather small.

Angel in a Sunhat  🌻
Up the country side was the small house surrounded by sunflowers. It was creek country, where Billy and Sunshine Shoepack had been reared. If you asked them they’d remember splashing in the creek, running through the flowers, playing in the mud of the sun showers. It was their country. The place they could be themselves and it was here that Billy still stayed and Sunshine loved.
When Boomer had told he and Ten Cents that Captain Star had been transferred up river he… well he was devastated, and he figured that this sadness came from his friend leaving, he’d be sad if any of the Stars left for an indefinite about of time, he had been upset when he had made the decision to leave Billy and his home up stream for a better opportunity but this time something was different.
Friday came and the Stars headed to the Bridge Café, Grampus in toe with ten cents, Hercules and Lillie, who’d just reunited after a long month at sea. Through supper he watched the couple hand holding, peppering kisses and complimenting one another. Sunshine’s stomach crochet in knots. It was like a longing and a sadness.
He excused himself from the long table the waitresses had compiled in the middle of the café for the fleet and went to the balcony for a smoke.
He drew in a breath and stared up at the stars, somewhere he hoped someone was starring back.
“You doing alright?” Grampus had followed him out, requesting a draw from his cigarette, he obliged. “Yeah mate, just missing home I think.” Sunshine said pulling his jacket closer.
“I get it, my time with the navy gave me a chance to see how men are affected by the loss of the place of familiarity. I still feel that here when I’m with all of you. Though I love the chance I’ve been given with Captain Star I’m still jealous most of the Starfleet and hell the Zeds are stationed in a place called home.”
Sunshine puffed. “I ain’t jealous.”
“No? Not even with Hercules and Lillie sitting on each others laps?” He laughed but the smaller Switcher captain pulled his hat over his head and was silent.
“Sunshine?” He put a hand on the small of his back.
“S’it’s nothin’.” Sunshine whistled.
“You’re sure?” The two were quite. Sunshine realized in this moment that he wasn’t in a place of familiarity. The crushing reality that he’d so recently faced came rushing back to him that he made a promise to continue and explore his chances in Bigg City but the city didn’t have flowers, it didn’t have a creek to swim in, very rarely did the rainbows peak through the clouds after a sun-shower. He was standing in a bigger ocean and not a river at all.
When Boomer had been here, he dulled the pain of homesickness, he had grown fond of him and took him to the shops in town to browse for a uniform when they had tried implementing him into the fleet. Although it had been for nothing, he had taken Boomer to a farmers market and showed him the honeycrisp apples sold by a vendor who came down from the river every Sunday.
As they munched they walked past a flower shop that caught Boomer’s eye instantaneously. He needed the Sunflowers in the window, Sunshine didn’t understand why but as they waved goodbye to Boomer at the dock Boomer had given him a flower to remember him by, he tucked it into the strap of his cap. He still had it.
“Grampus, I’m taking the train upriver tomorrow morning, I’ll be back before Monday but I- I need to leave right now. Can you tell the others?”
“Aye Sunshine, but wuh-.” Sunshine wetly laughed and hugged him.
“There’s someone I need to see… thank you.”
Grampus returned the hug tighter then Sunshine. “Go get him, Sunny.” He whispered.
🌻🌻🌻
He was tending to the flowers on the veranda inside the lodge, dazingly staring at the Petunias, Forget-Me-Nots and Poppies that fluttered in the wind. The day was quaint and bright, his manager had given him the weekend shift and he was glad, friday’s hum of celebration left a sweet taste of cherry wine on his tongue and despite him working diligently through the night incase of late check-ins he could feel a ginger harmony fall over him. The tenants still slept peacefully into the morning and his work was done.
Now he simply waited for the morning shift workers to clock in and he’d be on his way, free to sleep, do his own house chores to the sights of the mountains around him and be alone…
It wasn’t so bad though, he chased the sauntering thought away, he had his coworkers company during the evening even if they worked on opposite floors and he had the trees! The trees that uh… could be great company!
His chest hurt.
“Boomer, you all clued up, up here?”
Alice popped her head over the railing of the stairs. He’d be lying if he didn’t admit the lodge wasn’t astounding. He would talk about it for hours to the town people when he wasn’t at home or work. It really consumed his life since Ten Cents and Sunshine…
“There’s someone here for you when you’re all ready. He says he’s looking for a Captain Harry? I told him we don’t have a Captain Harry staying with us, but he insisted he’d be here. Then I remembered your last name - are you Captain Harry by chance?” She could almost talk as much as him given the chance. He blinked.
“Yeah, I mean I used to be. Who is it?”
She sat next to him on the sofa under the window. “A Billy Shoepack, he works on the river around town, you hear of him?” Before he could answer he was off the couch, halfway down the grand staircase.
“Ah!” He stumbled his way back up. “I’m off the clock now, give the morning shift staff my condolences, cheers!” And flew down the rest of the stairs with his spindly legs.
When he arrived at the front desk a man he’d never seen before, covered in soot and plasters from head to wheelchair (if you could believe that) made conversation with the front desk staff Dolan Deckard. He and Boomer had started at the cottage around the same time, he opted for the day shift but something told Boomer he still failed to get his 12 hours at night. He was often hostile towards guests and spoke with a drawn out tone. He was currently having none of what Billy Shoepack had to give.
“Sir if you have no reservation then you can’t be here, end of story.”
“But I’m here for a Harry? Does he work here, is he here? That’s all I need to know.”
“And I can’t tell you that either. That would be a violation of privacy!” Dolan expressed. The color was filling his face.
Boomer decided it be best if he stepped in before Dolan exploded, he had heard Billy had a tendency to do that. “Ah- can I be of help?”
“Thank god Boomer, please explain to this heathen we are not serving to outsiders who look like.” He motioned, “that.”
Billy snapped, “what’s wrong with the way I look?!”
He stepped into the middle. “I’ll escort him out Dolan. You have some other guests who need tending to and oh we wouldn’t want to make a scene.” Dolan adjusted his tie and flattened his hair.
“No Mr Harry, no we would not.” He sniffed and called the next customer.
Billy Shoepack wheeled himself away from the front desk, following Boomer out the front door.
“Sorry about him. He’s never like that, actually no, he is like that a lot of the time…” Billy scanned Boomer, looking for something?
“You're Captain Harry?” He blurted.
“I- yes, I am-was?? Why does that matter?”
Billy shot a hand out, his posture changing entirely, with a smile so large it threatened to fall from his face.
“I’m Billy Shoepack! You must of heard something of me once or twice, I’m popular ‘round these parts. But I’m actually here because my cousin sent me as his wing man.”
“Wing man?”
“That’s right! He’s got a right old thing for you! Asked me to come and get you my self.”
“Well, whose your cousin?” Billy faltered at his question.
“Now see here!! I ain’t no snitch! He’s entrusted me with a sacred duty and I want to make sure I don’t yuk it up, I can’t just go around telling people who their secret admirers are ‘specially since I’m related to him, my cousin and all.”
Boomer tried to recall any acquaintances he may have made in the past month since he’d been up river. Dolan, Alice, Barry (his manager), Billy now, supposedly. But no one else that he could think of off the top of his head.
He wished Sunshine was here to help him through this debacle, he helped so much with getting him through his jinx, he never gave up on him despite all the terrible things that came along with being his friend.
Boomer stopped at the stairs disturbing his train of thought. “How did you get up here in your chair?”
“Climbed it like this-“ he rolled his wheel chair and bounced down every step. “But backwards and a little slower. You guys should invest in a ramp, is not very accessible, and you’ll have vets returning from war looking for a quite place to holiday.”
Fair enough, Boomer thought.
🌻🌻🌻
What was he doing? He can’t do this, what if this is uncalled for? They only just met, but his heart beat out of his chest standing in Billy’s living room just thinking about him. Sunshine wasn’t a charmer, he barely had any relationships when he lived up river to begin with, even in school he’d have girl friends but had never been on a date with any of them, didn’t feel like he needed to. What made him think a boy, no a man, would want him in this way at all?
He couldn’t flatten his already flattened hair enough
The door clicked and Sunshine nearly jumped from his skin.
“Hello?” A woman’s voice. Aunty Hilda walked through the door. “Sun…shine?” She remembered his name.
This wasn’t about that now.
The bag of groceries she held fell to the counter in a rush, she enveloped him in the tightest bear hug she could muster, she worked as a log-rider so it was very strong. “What the hell are you doing back so early? It’s the middle of April! I thought we weren’t due for a visit until summer!” His face betrayed him. “What Sunny? Tell me what’s wrong.” He held his hand.
“I uh… I met someone Aunty. He came into the harbor a stray tug, Captain Star let him work with the Starfleet for a bit but it didn’t last, he wasn’t very good at anything he did in the harbor.” He was rambling, he hated to ramble, get to the point Sunshine.
She listened attentively. “Captain Star found a place here up river for him to work. It’s been a month Aunty, I can’t stop thinking about him.” He was sobbing, shaking, his hold on the sunflower cracked the stem, she gently took the flower and placed it on the table.
“Oh, honey…” he leaned on her. This was awful, he wasn’t a school boy anymore, he could handle his emotions on his own, why did he break when he came home. “This is heartbreak Sunny. I’m not sure what happened when you first met him but this boy must have captured your heart regardless of if you knew it or not, letting him go must have hurt so bad, didn’t it?” He nodded into her shoulder. “You came back for him didn’t you? And I’m guessing you had Billy go and fetch him, aye?”
He froze, pulled back. “How did you know?”
“Boy, the two of you have been tag teaming since you could trot. Drove the neighbors nuts with your antics, stealin’ the honeycrisps out of the orchard just a day before the harvest. Billy would do anything for you and more. What’s his name Sunshine?”
He hadn’t said it out loud since the day they left him on the dock, a giant lodge towering over he and Ten Cents’ Switchers, it was cheesy but given the chance he’d describe the halo that glowed around the lodge around Boomer had made him look just like an angel, the sunflower was a gift from god. An angel in a sunhat.
“Boomer.”
“Hi, Sunshine.”
What a caring voice came from the open door way into the living room. He held his hat to his chest, the morning sun halo’d him once more. Billy gave him a thumbs up from the window. He hesitantly stepped forward.
“You’re back already.”
“I can explain.”
“I think your cousin told me everything on the way over.” He chuckled.
Sunshine closed up. “I’m sorry.”
“For what? You did nothing wrong Sunny.”
“Why are you laughing?” Sunshine peeked over his hand, “why are you crying?!”
“Oh man were really bad at this.” Boomer wiped at his cheek. He looked so sore and withdrawn. Sunshine stepped and stepped and he ran, crashing into Boomer who held steady as he would, he was big and strong and someone who could hold him up, Sunshine needed someone to hold him up.
He kissed him,
Not a small peck, nor an aggressively needy smooch but a perfect, sloppy beautiful yearning kiss. He was beautiful. Sunshine buzzed with so much anticipation.
“You kissed me.”
“I did.” Boomer spotted the sunflower on the table. It travelled and wilted, separated from the other flowers but still shone as if it had never left the warmth of Sunday.
Sunshine must have cared for it until the very end. “You're Just like a Honeybee.”
“Like a…” he was astounded and laughed so hard he snorted.

All Around The World Tag
@chauceryfairytales started this game here, so thank you very much for that! I’m excited to see what comes of it :D
Rules: Share some local facts or customs from where you live that would make for interesting worldbuilding tidbits!
I grew up in a rural town in Tennessee (like, an hour drive from anything more interesting than a Walmart, with “cricks” and “hollers” and such) but after brainstorming with my wife we came up with a few peculiar quirks I thought might be interesting to add into some worldbuilding.
1. Honey sticks. Literally just plastic tubes about the size of straws. Think a pixie stick, but full liquid honey instead of crystallized sugar. Often flavored, like cinnamon, sour blackberry, or cherry, they're considered like a penny candy, something you get like 3 for a $1. You just bite one end open and suck all the honey out. I could see them easily being made with beeswax or somesuch.
2. "Octoberfest", but like, culturally divorced from any real meaning. For us it was basically an excuse to eat fair food and sell homemade goods. Main Street gets blocked off so vendors can set up, selling everything from corndogs and funnel cakes, to handmade soaps and quilts, to cheesy light up toys and other cheap stuff from the dollar store sold at inflated rates to parents with kids screaming at them to buy them something. Further out of town, all the houses along the highway rent out their yards to people, from a typical yard sale with old clothes and things, to people who travel around selling rings, knives, flags, all kinds of stuff. This is, also, where I bought honey sticks. An old holiday made over into something more modern could be a fun way to name drop a bit of history that wouldn’t otherwise be relevant to your narrative (hooray for sneaking in your darlings!)
(In addition to Octoberfest, we had a year round "indoor yard sale" that was basically a big empty building about the size of a high school gymnasium that just sold... junk. On Wednesday's they'd have Bale Opening days, where they're get this HUGE bales of clothes in, like the size of a small car, and they’d cut them open and you could just dig through them, alongside the employees who were sorting them to be priced and hung up. Things from the bale were cheaper, but like, so random. And you could never be sure what was am open bale for picking through and what was someone's pile of items they wanted to buy...)
3. Backroads and weather don’t mix. It was not uncommon to shut down school for a light dusting of snow, or even heavy rains, because lots of us lived out in the country, to the point of one lane roads or "bridges" that were just shallow places the creek was allowed to run over the road, or hills that go up and down as severely as cartoons . I once had to wade home through water that came up past my hip. My mom walked down to the “main road” (which was about a lane and a half, and only paved about a mile out of town) to pick me up, and we held hands as we crossed over water moving fast enough it might have swept us away singly. We learned to just not go to school, if the weather was at all questionable. Or, once I started driving, I’d just stay uptown with a friend for the night if there was any doubt I’d be able to get home.
4. The Elephant Sanctuary. Doesn't seem that odd, until you remember that I grew up in rural Tennessee. There are acres set aside for retired Circus elephants, where they're housed and fed and get to live out their lives without having to perform for people. No one was allowed to visit, but they would do educational video streams to the schools, and they set up a booth at Octoberfest selling merch and accepting donations. And it’s just... there. Like we all knew about it, but I didn’t even know it was for circus elephants until my wife told me. There’s just... random elephants... somewhere. It’s not even like a zoo or a place you can visit at all, it’s just... there. (could you even imagine such a thing for out of place animals in your worldbuilding? Like “oh yeah, that’s the wyvern sanctuary, nbd)
5. The "museum", which is basically one guy's collection of big game trophies, but also a weird smattering of Civil War memorabilia, some coal mining stuff, and a collection of preserved eggs. Surprisingly, not a lot about Lewis and Clark, even though Lewis's grave is in our hometown (and in fact, the eternal yard sale that is Octoberfest stretches from Main Street all the way out to Lewis's gravesite along the Natchez Trace). There’s also a random locomotive parked outside, which has several geocaches hidden in it. (Imagine the third son of a long ago king just like, bequeathing all his junk to the town his hunting lodge was in.)
Whew! That turned out to be a lot more than I thought it would! I tag @pheita@loopyhoopywrites @jaimistoryteller, and anyone else who’d like to do it!

Cherry (Duck Newton x Reader) Chapter 1 (Don’t You Call Him Baby)
Chapter Two Cherry NSFW Ending When Mama had asked you and Barclay to go pick up some pizzas you were more than happy to help out. Barclay opened the door to the pizza hut with a joking bow.
“M’lady.” He adds.
“Thanks, baby.” You joke to your long time friend and you both laugh.
When you turn to look inside you're caught off guard by who you see standing at the counter and freeze. He’s turned around staring at you with a sad frown on his face.
Barclay looks at you in confusion then to the man at the counter, then back at you.
You notice the confusion and offer a weak smile. “Uh, hey Duck.” You begin walking again towards the counter.
“Hey.” Duck nods in return without a smile.
The person behind the counter hands him a pizza box and wishes him a good day.
“See ya’ around.” Duck coldly says before walking out the door.
You turn and watch as he disappears from view.
Barclay places a hand on your shoulder. “What was that about?”
----------
“You’re going down!” You jeer before the roller hockey match begins.
“In your dream!” Duck yells back.
It was a Friday night and you were at the abandoned furniture store. It was common for you and other rowdy teens together here late in the night to play roller hockey and smoke the occasional weed. You had made quick friends with Duck and looked forward to seeing him.
The teen beside the two of you drops the puck and the game begins. You get the puck first and your teammates begin shuffling it towards the opponents goal, before Duck swoops in and changes the direction of the puck. You roll over the stand by the goalie ready to help out. Duck swings his stick back and sends the puck flying towards the goal.
At least, what Duck thinks towards the goal. Instead of the puck flying into the goal like the thought it would, the puck flies up and hits you square in the nose. There’s a moment where everyone freezes, before people begin to react. Some of the other teens start booing Duck, a few laugh but not in a mockingly way. Your hands instantly fly up to cover your nose as blood begins to drip from it and tears sting your eyes. Duck is quickly by your side.
“Ah shit, I’m sorry, I didn’t ment ta’-,” Duck begins apologizing and following you as you skate away.
You roll into the old bathroom with Duck not far behind you and flick on a flashlight from your pocket. It illuminates the dark room just enough so you can look in the mirror.
Looking in the mirror you assess the damage. A small bruise has already started to form on the bridge of your nose, and blood is dripping from both your nostrils. “Damn.” Is all you could say. Reaching up you touched the bruise before pulling your hand away and wincing.
“Here.” You look over at a sympathetic looking Duck who is offering you some tissues.
“Thanks,” you smile and take the tissues, wiping away the blood. More leaks out and you carelessly wipe it again.
“Here you gotta,” Duck says, bringing his hand to your nose. “Can I?”
You nod and allow him to pinch the bridge of your nose despite the pain.
“You gotta pinch your nose to help the blood clot.” Duck informs you.
“I didn’t know. This is the first time I’ve had a bloody nose.” You inform him with a nasally voice.
Duck makes a pitiful face. “I really am sorry about this.” He sighs.
You place a gentle hand on his forearm and smile. “Duck, really it’s alright. I know you didn’t mean to.”
“Still, I feel awful. Can I make it up to ya’ somehow?” He offers.
You think for a second. “Just let me bum a smoke from you then we’ll be even.”
“I can do that.” He smiles back then moves his hand from your nose. “I reckon that should be good.”
You turn back to the mirror and wipe off the rest of the blood. “Thanks, Doctor Newton. I’m as good as new.” You joke.
“So, do you wanna smoke?”
----------
You have to shield your eyes from the bright light as someone steps out of the arch way. Mama and Aubrey do as well. When the light dies down you just stare dumbfounded at the man before you. Duck doesn’t notice it’s you yet thanks to the darkness of the forest.
“What the hell?” Mama exclaims.
They exchange a brief conversation before a car comes crashing into the arch way, you run over to help Barclay out of the car. That’s when Duck notices you.
He tries to say something before you interrupt him. “We can talk later, Duck. I’m sure you have a lot of questions.”
----------
You sit beside Duck as you watch your fellow peers continue the roller hockey game. Duck takes a drag from his joint before coughing and passing it to you. You take it and inhale. As the smoke burns your lungs you begin to cough too, before passing it back to him. The two of you continue until it's gone.
As your head begins to feel lighter you lean against the wall and smile, some of the pain in your nose subsiding. You sit there and watch the game and cheer when one of your friends makes a goal.
You point over to her and look over at Duck, who is staring at your face. “That’s how you make a goal.” You joke.
Duck’s face turns red and he looks to the floor. “I’ll make a note for next time.”
You shove his shoulder. “I’m only joking. Lighten up.” He shoves you back and you giggle.
The two of you return to sitting in silence for a while before Duck breaks it.
“Hey,” he rubs the back of his neck. “Do you maybe wanna, go on a date… with me?”
You turn to him with a stunned look on your face. “With me?” You repeat back.
“With you.” He confirms.
“Duck, if this is a joke I’ll kick your ass, you know that right?” You scowl.
“It’s not, I swear! I just… I think you’re cool and, uh, thought you might wanna hangout by ourselves.” He’s looking at the floor.
“I think you’re cool too, Duck.” You reached over and took his hand in yours. “Sorry, I’ve had had guys think it’s a funny joke between them and their friends to jokingly ask me out before.”
Duck smiles in return. “So you wanna come over tomorrow and play some video games?”
You giggle. “Yeah I’d like that.”
----------
Everyone was sitting in the foyer of Amnesty Lodge as Mama talked game plans with them.
You stood by Barclay and leaned against the wall, arms crossed over your chest. You were apprehensive about bringing so many people onto the Pine Guard at once. Barclay and you had been asking Mama to bring more people on for a while now but three at once, and Ned fucking Chicane?
Duck stood on the other side of the room and although you tried to keep your focus on Mama, you couldn’t help looking over at Duck every so often, accidentally making eye contact almost every time. Everyone agreed to meet back up to fight the abomination, and Ned and Duck made their way to leave.
You quickly ran after Duck and caught him on the porch.
“Duck.” You call his name, stopping him in his tracks.
He turns to look at you with a small smile. “Hey.”
“Duck, I,” you pause and think on your words. “I have so much I want to talk to you about. When we’re done with this hunt can we talk? Please?”
“Sure.” Is all he says before making his way to his truck.
You make your way back inside with a sigh, almost walking into Barclay.
“What’s all that about?” He asks.
“I… We…” You let out another sigh. “Barclay, I broke his heart, and I’m pretty sure he hates me for it.”
----------
You were sat by Duck’s side on the floor playing a fighting game, and you lost for the fifth time. You let out a groan and fell back on the floor.
“This isn’t fair, I’m no good at these games.” You pout and Duck lets out a laugh.
“How about a racing game? I’ll still beat you, but you might have a better chance.” He offers.
You sit up and pretend to be offended. “I’ll have you know I’m a master at racing games.”
Duck smirks as he changes the cartridge in his game system. “Wanna bet?”
“Absolutely. If I win you have to admit I’m better at video games and roller hockey than you!” You smirk back.
“If I win,” Ducks smirk falls from his face and his cheeks turn a lovely rose color. “If I win I get to kiss you.” He almost whispers.
You pause for a second before laughing. Duck is taken aback, had what he said really been so silly?
You placed a hand on his shoulder. “You don’t have to win for me to kiss you, Duck.”
“Oh, I…” He shuts himself up before he sees you’re leaning closer to him. He closes the distance and places a few awkward first kisses to your lips.
The door to his room flies open and you two move apart, faces red. You both look at the door to see Duck’s little sister standing in the door frame.
“What the hell, Jane?” Duck exclaims.
“Mom said you gotta have the door open with a girl in your room!” She smirks, similar to Ducks. You laugh.
------------
The night air blew cold and you shivered. Duck wrapped his arm around your shoulder and pulled you close. The two of you watched the fireflies from the swing on his family's front porch. His other free hand held yours and you leaned your head against his shoulder.
The silence was calm and enjoyable. Even so Duck decided to break it.
“Hey.” Is all he says and you look up at him with a smile.
“Hey.” You offer back.
He’s smiling back at you fondly, a slight redness in his cheeks and ears. “I love you.”
You move to give him a gentle kiss and you both smile. “I love you too, Duck.”
----------
You somehow got separated from your family in the middle of the woods. Since your dad decided all his kids needed to know how to do archery, you had your crossbow held at your side. The sun was beginning to set and you cursed. You made your way to the stream and began to follow it up, which you knew led to the parking lot nearby.
Despite the fact you had spent so much time in these woods it seemed like the stream was leading you the wrong way. “Is there more than one creek in these woods?” You thought aloud.
“What’re you doing out here?” A voice startled you causing you to jump.
You look over and see an older man and woman on the other side of the small creek. They each had a weapon in their hands. You scowled and gripped your crossbow tighter. “Just a little lost.” You tell them, looking over their weapons. “You know there’s no hunting allowed in these parts?”
They go to reply but are interrupted by a nearby howl.
“You need to get out of here kid,” the man informs you.
“There’s no time,” the woman replies. She begins to make her way across the creek towards you and you begin to raise it at her. She stops in her tracks but doesn’t seem scared. “Are you any good with that?”
You nod.
“Good. Thacker gets over here, it’ll be here any minute.” She says to him as he makes his way to her.
“But, Mama, don’t you think,” he is interrupted again by the howl, which is even closer.
The sun is completely behind the horizon at this point, leaving the faint light of dusk to see by.
“Kid, if you see something weird and wolf-like, shoot it.” The woman named Mama tells you as she and Thacker stand in front of you.
You raise your bow at the ready. There's a sound of a branch snapping behind you and you twirl around to see a large five headed wolf. You follow directions and shoot.
----------
“This is all so far fetched.” Your hands are wrapped around a mug of warm tea. You're sitting at a table in Amnesty Lodge across from Mama and Thacker.
“I know how it sounds, but you saw it yourself.” Mama reminds you, taking a sip of her own tea.
You nod. “It also makes sense though. I always thought there was something off about our town.”
“So, what do you say?” Thacker asks. “Care to join us in keeping this town safe?”
There's a moment you pause to think. “Yes.”
----------
Little did you know while you were having your own experience with the unexplained, Duck was too. Since neither of you mentioned it to the other though how would you know?
Duck was sitting in his room talking to Minerva when you entered.
“Talking to yourself, babe?” You smile.
“As always.” He jokes.
“I got some good news.” You flop onto his bed.
“And what would that be?” He lies down next to you.
“I found a job. Up at the lodge called Amnesty. I’ll be running the front desk.” You inform him.
“Really? That’s great!” He kisses your cheek.
-----------
Duck knew after a year of dating you he wanted to spend the rest of his life with you. However he didn’t want to ask you to marry him so soon after you were both out of high school, so he decided to wait. Three years later he still waited, but had a ring hidden away in his sock draw.
After you started your job at the lodge Duck saw you less. Which made sense, you were both working at different times. You felt bad lying to Duck about your job. You only partially lied, you were working at the front desk. But also you were protecting this town from monsters.
After the next hunt, you end up in the hospital with a broken arm. You lie to Duck and say you feel down the stairs, and you hate it. You hate that you have to lie to him. After heavy contemplation, you decide you won’t anymore. You decided the only way to keep Duck safe from all this, you have to break up with him.
-----------
Duck decided this was it. This had to end. He decided he would work up the courage finally and finally ask you to marry him.
The two of you decided to meet up at one of your favorite places. A bench in the park that overlooked most of the town. Duck said he wanted to meet up when you both got off work because he missed you. Which was true but he had something else on his mind.
“Hey, darling.” He stood and kissed you, but noticed the sad look on your face. “What’s wrong?”
With a sigh you sit on the bench. “I… We need to talk, Duck.” You bite the inside of your cheek as you can already feel tears welling up in your eyes.
Duck’s stomach flips, this isn’t how he imagined this night going. “What’s wrong sweetheart.”
“I’ve been spending a lot of time at work and it takes up most of my time.” You begin, not making eye contact. “I feel like right now I can’t,” you swallow hard trying to keep the tears in your eyes. “I can’t dedicate enough time to our relationship right now and it’s not fair to you, Duck.” You fail and tears start running down your face.
“Whaddya mean?” Duck holds your hand not in the cast and wipes away tears from your cheek with the other.
“Duck, I’m,” you sniff, not wanting to say the next words. “Duck I’m breaking up with you.” Your lip quivers and you look away.
His hand stills on your face, you can’t bring yourself to look at him. “I don’t understand.” He says softly. “I, uh, we can make more time. You don’t have to feel pressured to see me everyday. We don't have to end this, we can make it work.” His voice begins to crack as he talks.
You take his hand from your face and place it on his lap. “Duck, I’m so sorry.” You can only whisper before you get up and make your way to your car. Leaving Duck alone with a heavy weight in his heart, and a ring in his pocket.
----------
When you walked into the room you could see Duck was already sitting at a table facing away from you. The room besides him was empty due to the late hour.
You sighed and fixed your hair before moving to sit across from him.
“Thank you for coming to talk with me.” You said sitting down.
You can’t help but look over his face now that he’s closer. He’s aged since you broke up with him, of course he had. You had as well. He had a few wrinkles, and he actually grew a five o’clock shadow he hadn’t been able to grow when he was a teen.
“S’ no problem.” Duck offers a small smile.
Duck can’t help but notice how you’ve changed as well. Besides a few age lines on your face you look more mature. The way you hold yourself and speak is more worldly than it was when you were together.
You can’t help but smile back. There’s a moment of silence before you both begin to speak at the same time.
“You first,” you offer.
“So this whole time you’ve been up here fighting monsters, huh?” Duck is looking at the table instead of you.
You nod. “Duck, I wanted to tell you. I really did. But I thought you would think I was crazy, and I didn’t want to keep lying to you. I felt so awful lying to you about how I broke my arm. I didn’t fall down the stairs, I had an abomination throw me against a tree. Everytime I lied to you it broke my heart, Duck. So that’s why… That’s why I broke up with you, Duck.” Your lip quivers, you feel overwhelmed getting this lie of your chest after so many years.
Duck reaches across the table and grabs your hand. “Hey it’s alright. You don’t need to start crying.” He coos.
“I just feel so bad, I ended things so horribly and didn’t take into consideration how it’d affect you. Can you ever forgive me?” You give his hand a squeeze.
“Of course I can.” He offers you a real smile.
“Really?” You sniff back a tear.
“Course I can. What happened between us was ages ago. Anyways you seem real happy here, and that Barclay fellow seems nice.” Duck assures you.
You pause for a second to think of his words. “Thank you, Duck. And Barlcay is really nice but we, we aren’t together is that’s what you’re implying.”
“Oh, I heard you call him baby and just thought, because that’s what you… Uh, that’s what you called me.” His smile falters for a second.
“No, there’s… There’s really been no one in my life like that since you.” You confess.
“Really?” He almost laughs.
“Really,” you confirm. “What about you?”
“No one serious.” He states.
“Really?”
“Really.”
There's a pause between the two of you. Your hand is still in his. For a moment you think to ask to try again, but decide you don’t have the right to. Then Duck breaks the silence.
“Now, you can say no, but do you think, maybe… Maybe we could try again?” Duck murmurs.
“I’d really like that, Duck.”

It dictates its responsiveness, breathability, temperature, buoyancy, and a number of different elements. So that you’ll have to know the way every sort of mattress and its supplies meet your particular person sleep wants.Reminiscence FoamVersatile

For my Cherry Springs trips I’ve been staying in this REALLY REALLY NICE cabin/lodge type place. Like, goshh, it’s so nice. The place has cabins, one of which I stayed in last time, and suites, one of which I’ll be staying in this time. And like! They all have multiple bedrooms/sleeping areas, a fully-equipped kitchen (stove top, oven, microwave, full-sized fridge, pots and pans, baking sheets, drinking glasses, wine glasses, dinner plates, eating utensils, etc), a dining area, patios/decks, outdoor grills, some off the cabins have two floors,
and the property is right frickin beside Pine Creek, which is this beautiful stream that runs several miles through PA, and there’s fire pits out in the yard, picnic areas, volleyball courts... it’s just! so! nice!
And the place only costs like 200 bucks a night AT MOST for their most expensive rooms! Significantly less if you book through an intermediary like booking.com. Last time, I got four nights for 666 bucks, and this time I’ve got 2 nights for 260 bucks.
Like!!!
If I wanted to stay in a hotel room in New York or DC or Baltimore or basically any city area that had multiple bedrooms and a fully equipped kitchen, I’d be looking at like upwards of 400 bucks a night. Shit, even hotel rooms that DON’T have all those things wind up costing at least that much!
So like.
This place is really really really amazing for not a whole lot of money, comparatively.
And yeah, it’s in the middle of nowhere nestled between several amazing state parks, but it’s also very close to a grocery store, which is just! Sooooo convenient! So if you’re driving there, you don’t have to crowd your car up with the food you wanna bring; you can just buy that shit when you get there!

GNP Trip Report - Lake McDonald Lodge & Canoeing (Day 1 Part 2)
Tumblr media
After about an hour of relaxing at Apgar and taking in the view across Lake McDonald (see Part 1 here), we decided a change of scenery would be fun and left for Lake McDonald Lodge. On the way we saw Sprague Creek campsite, where we wanted to stay the following night, so we drove in to check it out and figure out the process to get a first-come-first-served campsite. We honestly didn’t quite understand the process from looking at the information in the campground, but driving around there were a number of campsites with a 27 on them, meaning they’d be checking out the next day. We took that as a good sign but still decided the best plan was to arrive early. Brian checked out the recreation.gov website later, which records the time that campsites are filled each day in Glacier, and it said Sprague Creek filled by 9 AM on Friday and didn’t fill up at all on Thursday. We were so excited to camp, and were hoping for the best in getting a campsite!
We then parked at Lake McDonald lodge and made some sandwiches for lunch, then walked up to the main lobby. The hotel was so cool! It was much smaller than I thought it’d be, but it had a great western feel. The lobby extended upwards three floors in the middle and had animal heads all over the walls. We wandered outside and got another view of Lake McDonald – it was very different from the view at Apgar Village as the view of the mountains was blocked. We personally thought that the view was grander over at Apgar, with the mountains towering beyond the lake.

We ate our sandwiches on a bench down by the lakeside, and enjoyed some good people watching along with the scenery. Then we rock-hopped across a stream and sat on the rocky beach for a while, even putting our feet in the water. The first dip was SO cold and sent shivers through my body, but I got used to it. I think the water was definitely warmer by Apgar. Across the water were acres of white trees with no leaves, which were the remains of a forest fire from years ago. The Sprague fire was actually burning across the road and had been going for about a week. We could smell the fire a little and could hear helicopters flying around, but the reports at the time were that the fire was contained. About a week later it spread significantly, and Lake McDonald lodge closed early for the season and the historic Sperry Chalet mostly burned down. It was definitely a moving reminder of how powerful natural forces could be, especially in a place as wild as Glacier.

We headed back to Apgar and checked into the Village Inn. It was 3 PM but free cups of coffee at the front desk called our names – definitely gave us the second wind we needed! After relaxing for awhile and drinking our coffee, we rented a canoe to explore Lake McDonald! It was HOT out on the middle of the lake, a striking comparison to the freezing water splashing up, and eventually a breeze picked up. Paddling over near the north shore, we heard a bird calling so we looked around for it, excited for our any wildlife encounters. Soon enough, a big bird swooped out of the woods and over the lake. It landed further up the shore, and while we were looking for it guess what we spotted – a bald eagle!! It was perched on a branch near its nest, and we heard high pitched chirps that we thought might be babies!! We sat and watched the eagle for awhile, totally in awe.
Time totally got away from us and suddenly our rental hour was almost up! We paddled very hard back to the shore, and switched off being in the muscle in the front versus the driver in the back. Our skills at staying in a straight line were only so-so, but we made it back and had a ton of fun!

Back at the hotel, we had a beer out on our porch and just continued to enjoy the scenery. We ended up chatting quite a bit with our neighbors, who were really nice and had been to a lot of the national parks so they had some good stories to tell about Yosemite and Alaska. Brian and I each enjoyed local beers – Big Sky IPA and Flathead Lake Brewing Company Centennial IPA, both of which were great. We made a quick dinner in our stove, away from the hotel room, of angel hair pasta with cherry tomatoes and pesto. It was delicious!

We sat for a while longer on our porch and watched the sunset. We also noticed that the smoke from the Sprague fire up on the hill sank down over the lake as it got darker. We came out after showering to look at the stars before turning in and they were absolutely insane. As people who live in a busy metropolitan area, the number of stars in the sky blew us away. We saw a couple shooting stars and I’m pretty sure the Milky Way. What a great way to end our first day in Glacier National Park! We couldn’t wait to get up and get going on our next adventure.
