The Black and White one of the pack is Artolvia, or well as far as she’s concerned is the leader in learning everything from Magick to reading . Currently, as far as anything goes she’ll do just about anything involving books. The name means Everstorm or Everlasting Storms, she might just be the last of the few cats with knowledge of sorcery and books in general . As for the rest of them, they have other magicks in skill. Though, have found that her and the first one, the orange and white one, are both very versed in the sorcery. The orange and white has a lot still to figure out, but she’s got most of the reading done and the sights for the books easily. However, she still thinks the books for Halloween is Ganowel. She still has a bit to learn there. Ganowel is not exactly the same thing, but she knows a little about the origins of both, so sometimes she confuses the two. However, the latter is Eve of the Autumn and Dead, which she still has a lot to figure out there. However, she refers to most of it as Gavorkey (Key of the Night), which is still got lots to learn there too. She tends to have some mix ups with words in due to lack of depth in the color area , since she is colorblind on the left and has it towards Blue and Red from what I can figure out. The black and white one, also Colorblind in the right side of her sight and for Greys and Violets.

something i just realized is since cats are colourblind, can they even tell apart their different coat colours??

I mean black and white are both definitely different from any other color, so even if they'd see the world in grays (they don't), they'd see the difference between a red tabby and a black tabby, or a tuxedo, a tortie and a solid black. But maybe not between a red tabby and a blue tabby.

Let's see if I can find out what they actually see.

"Most electrophysiological studies have demonstrated two photopic receptors within the cat's retina, one most sensitive to longer wavelengths near 560 nm and the other most sensitive to shorter wavelengths near 460 nm. [...] Two cats [...] successfully discriminated monochromatic light from 456 nm to 497 nm and from 510 nm to 524 nm, but both failed to discriminate monochromatic light at 505 nm over multiple trials." I couldn't find exact sensitivity curves for the cat cones, so i made a crude demonstration how they could look like based on the study above, with symmetric sensitivity curves.

This is obviously just a very rough estimate of what colors they'd be able to differentiate, but the longer wavelength cone does seem to be able to pick up the orangeish color of phaeomelanin.

But, as the study says: "These results provide strong evidence that cats are dichromatic with a neutral point near 505 nm. This neutral point is nearly identical to the neutral point of the human deuteuranope, making feline vision a more accurate a model for red-green colorblind individuals than normal trichromats." - And i'm sure there are plenty of filters on the internet to simulate human colorblindness (I used this one), so let's see how some coat colors look like in them!

Point is, yes, they probably can tell apart their colors, or at least those that we can.

- he gives the best hugs, and due to his gentle and outgoing nature he became pretty popular

- she is also the one that basically always gets called in game when i need to collect more eggs to rejuvanate someone (she has 100% chance of breeding with Witness Bathin and Hauras)

- died once for an heart attack, the lamb immeidatly resurrected her; however, the ritual wasn't perfect since Hejul came back "wrong": the bear's eyes were altered by the resurrection so now he has feline eyes that are not correctly wired to his brain, so he has presbiophia and is also colorblind.

Grejul

- small little creature fueled by the flames of hell itself

- almost always grumpy and pissed off (who hurt you girl)

- loves to start fights and tends to bully the losers; smart enough to wait for the lamb to leave the cult grounds before doing anything

- she managed to bug the game because Sozo was eating mushrooms when I indoctrinated her, and as soon as i accepted her in the cult she immediatly started a fight with a random guy; so the game interpreted it like Sozo did eat the mushroomo, so he asked me for another buddy to eat while his lunch was beating up a farmer.

- the lamb finds her eandearing and infuriating. They send her to unwind her stress on missionaries

I see a lot of people make headcanons that Sephiroth's eyes dilate like a cats' bc of the way his eyes are, but I NEVER see people think about the other stuff it'd mean!

Like wouldn't he also be colorblind since cats have different vision than we do? And I'm not an expert on cat-vision lol, but a quick Google search of what cats see show blurred peripheral vision too :o (but idk if that'd really be super accurate 😭💔)

okay my (non-wc) friend was asking me about this and I completely forget. does the redux have the cats be (more) accurately colourblind? I know you're a lot closer to feline accuracy than most, but I couldn't remember if this was ever really brought up

In the original Redux, the cats were accurately colorblind. Ginger and red cats were called yellow or golden, as the biggest example of that. Here, the narrative has them be able to see all colors in the name of simplicity. Lynx and I never discussed this, though - it just worked better for this story for them to properly describe colors as they are.

It's possible that the cats themselves are still colorblind and we're just having their words and ideas translated to English, which accurately names colors in a human perspective. I'm certainly not opposed to that idea.

Cathar Headcanons Masterpost 2.0

(Now with 20% more facts I made up and 40% less meandering!)

But still definitely some meandering. Under a readmore so I don’t do-you-love-the-color-of-cathar your dash.

General

Cathar are basically felids evolved to fill a similar evolutionary niche to humans in the absence of any viable primate species on their native planet, in the same way hyenas evolved to fill a niche normally occupied by canids. 

They're mainly persistence hunters but not terribly efficient ones outside their home planet, mainly because rather than specializing they evolved to be kinda good at both persistence hunting and the more traditionally feline sprinting sneak attack. In terms of both speed and strength they can outperform humans on average in the short term, but have noticeably less stamina. They greatly outmatch any quadrupedal felids for stamina, though. (Mandalorians are an invasive species and in this essay I will...)

They run hotter than humans, around 100-102F.

Though height varies quite a bit across the species, cathar are taller on average than humans and build muscle more easily, making them extremely formidable opponents in hand-to-hand combat.

While they do have elongated canines, their teeth are more even in size than wild felids, and while they do still have barbed tongues, the texture is more similar to a domestic cat than anything of comparable size (ie. if one licks you for some reason it will feel sandpaper-y and weird, but they won’t take your skin off). They also have somewhat thinner skin than wild cats, though they are still more damage resistant than humans.

They have broad non-retractable claws rather than humanlike fingernails. Many cathar choose to either dull them or file them down for convenience but any who find themselves in close combat regularly usually prefer to keep them sharp. Either way they require different maintenance than human nails. They’ve also got pads on their palms, soles, and fingertips that are highly resistant to wear/damage compared to human skin.

They’re plantigrade but only have four toes on each foot arranged more symmetrically than on humans, in keeping with the general layout of felids and also because it is so much easier to draw.

They have approximately lion-like tails used in both balance and communication, and I will personally fistfight George Lucas about this.

They have tapeta lucida, which gives them excellent night vision and makes them very unsettling to encounter in the dark. Their pupils are rounded rather than slitted, and they have roughly the same range of color vision as humans, but they can also see a limited degree into the UV spectrum. They presumably evolved the ability to see red that most felids lack after they developed a more omnivorous diet, but red-green colorblindness is more common than in humans (and seen noticeably more often in northern-type cathar than southern).

Flagrant Bullshitting About Genetics

Wookieepedia describes Cathar as “a planet of savannas and rough uplands” but because I dislike the “single-biome planet” trope and also have very little grasp of geology, my vague headcanon is that Cathar at least has a tropical equator that’s primarily desert and savanna where the cathar species originated, and frozen poles that some of them later migrated to, resulting in there being basically two general types of cathar. They’re not genetically different enough to be subspecies and operate more like different races of human, and there’s a good chance there was more variety before 90% of the species was wiped out, but while they kept apace with galactic technological development they weren’t as thoroughly dominant a species on their own planet as humans are on Earth, and fairly large areas of the planet were unpopulated, at least by anything sapient.

They’re more adjacent to felinae than panthera, and are capable of purring and growling but not roaring. They don’t meow in the typical cat sense, not because they can’t but because meowing, in their species, evolved into speaking. Cathar don’t meow at each other for the same reason you don’t walk up to people and start making chimp noises (I mean, probably, I don’t know your life).

The two types, which I refer to as “northern” and “southern” because I’m from the northern hemisphere of Earth and incredibly lazy, are still recognizable by distinct traits even in SWTOR Times, with the southern type (thought to be the original) having shorter, sleeker fur, larger ears, a tendency toward lankier, more slender build, and coloration that favors deeper, warmer colors and vivid markings. The northern type tend to be less dramatic in color with a lot of pale greys and a prevalence of blue/dilute/silver genes, and lean more heavyset with smaller, shorter ears. Most cathar with northern heritage have a long guard coat and dense, husky-like undercoats, and as a result are extremely cold-tolerant. A lot of present-day (TOR-era) cathar have combinations of traits from both but you’ll still see a fair number of them who are very obviously one or the other purely because there haven’t been enough generations since the Battle of Cathar for the lines to blur much. Strongly southern cathar are more common than northern, mostly because more of them were able to escape the planet, and some of the predominantly-northern colonies tend to be more insular (though they also tend to retain more cultural history as a result, most of it distinctly northern as well, and many still hold a massive grudge against the Mandalorians to a degree that a lot of southern cathar don’t).

They have less sexual dimorphism than SWTOR implies, though females are a little smaller on average and tend to have shorter/finer manes that are closer to their base color. In terms of relative strength/mass the difference is very minor and female cathar are still very capable of fucking you up (the conventional assumption in the Empire that females are weak/docile and males are too uncontrollable to be useful as slaves is not remotely true and probably based largely on confirmation bias). 

Tangential Empire Headcanon: blood sports/gladiatorial fights are a thing in some areas of the Imperial core worlds and popular with a lot of Sith, though not broadly advertised to the galaxy at large. Most cathar slaves not being used for labor end up doing that (usually males, due to the above misconception). It’s very rare in the Empire to find them in any other roles, as they’re considered a more “primitive” species due to their outward appearance.

I now have a whole genetics chart for cathar coloration because I cannot be stopped. I should probably be stopped.

Their manes usually grow in the same area as human hair, but can extend down the back/neck, or not extend down the sides of the head to create a mohawk-looking situation. Length varies widely, sometimes only growing to a few inches and sometimes coming down to mid-back or lower, but shoulder-length is most common in males (females usually have much shorter manes and sometimes they don’t noticeably have one at all), and they frequently grow out in a mullet-like shape. Some cathar will style/trim their manes or clip them down completely, but most can get by with relatively little maintenance beyond brushing.

The rate at which cathar have twins is significantly higher than humans, around 20%. Newborn kittens are also a little smaller and less developed than human babies and require a lot of close attention for the first month or so, after which they become more resilient and catch up with humans in terms of development. They also start speaking a bit later, but begin picking up nonverbal communication around when humans start on speech (if raised by adoptive humanoid parents, their speech development will be on par with a human child but they’ll have heavily underdeveloped nonverbal communication unless socialized with other cathar, which can lead to difficulty relating to their own species later)

Until the onset of puberty, cathar have softer, downy kitten fur and no mane. Some kittens are born with markings that fade when their adult coat grows in (usually an indicator that they’ll have ghost markings as adults), others might gain more vivid and defined markings or shift darker/lighter in color. While a lot of parents will trim their kittens’ coats to keep them clean more easily and avoid mats, it’s broadly acknowledged that clipping a kitten’s coat down too far can mess with the growth pattern of their coat in adulthood and cause areas that stick out or grow in odd directions, especially in northern-type coats. Sometimes the problem corrects itself after they shed out a few times, sometimes they just have to invest in styling products or live with it. I didn’t base this on cats for the record this is not grooming advice for cats.

Food

They’re obligate carnivores and have different nutritional needs from humans (similar but not identical to those of a cat), which can be a problem in places like the military where standardized rations are the norm. In the Republic a cathar can usually put in a request for rations designed to accommodate carnivores (or supplements, failing that), though they might have some trouble on more isolated or under-supplied planets. The rare cathar in the Imperial military will have to procure supplements out of pocket. Later in the timeline when aliens in the military become more common it’s technically possible to get reimbursed for it, if they’re willing to wade through the paperwork, but Imperial rations remain human-formulated only.

Cathar are perfectly capable of eating raw meat with no ill effects, and have a whole genre of cuisine centered around it. They also have plenty of ways of cooking meat.

Their “natural” diet apart from meat mainly consists of fruit, root vegetables, dairy, and bird eggs, though the closer to the poles you get the less likely you are to encounter fruit in a dish, and the more likely you are to encounter milk products. Cathar never cultivated grain and it holds no meaningful nutritional value for them, so bread, rice, and similar products simply do not appear in traditional cuisine. This does not stop some of them from eating grain products in small amounts, as they can still enjoy the taste, but it isn’t any healthier than processed sugar is to humans and they have a high rate of gluten intolerance as a species.

All cathar have a heightened and refined ability to detect savory/umami type flavors, but around 30-40% of cathar, mostly those with northern heritage whose ancestors just didn’t evolve around fruit, have no taste receptors for sweetness at all. This has resulted in the cathar equivalent of the Cilantro Debate centering around desserts, even though they’re all perfectly aware that it’s genetic, and some who can’t taste sweetness still enjoy desserts for the other flavors in them. Those who can taste sweetness are usually about as sensitive to it as humans, though some have dulled sensitivity. 

Citrus smells horrendous and overwhelmingly strong to them.

They require somewhat less water than humans and can survive longer without it. As with cats, they can also process saltwater much more efficiently than humans and can, for a while, stay hydrated from it.

Social/Cultural Minutiae

They use a fair amount of feline body language, particularly within their own species. While facial expressions play a part in communication and they do smile, scowl, and generally express broad emotions, they have a reduced range of facial mobility compared to more humanoid species and no eyebrows to speak of, which leads to a lot of them having what humans perceive as resting bitch face. It also results in humans underestimating the range and depth of their emotions, and can be a problem with human medics/doctors who haven’t been trained to work with less humanoid aliens and won’t necessarily recognize signs of severe pain or distress.

Their ears are less articulated than a cat’s due to positioning, but still have some degree of mobility that serves more of a social function than a practical one. They also express a lot of emotion through their tails, to the point that it can be a detriment if they haven’t practiced consciously keeping control of it.

Bumping foreheads is a common way to express platonic/familial affection, or can be the equivalent of a chaste kiss between partners. They also squint and slow blink like cats do, though it doesn’t always translate clearly to other species.

They have a wider range of vocalization than humans; while their voices are mostly humanlike and they’re just as articulate, they can also growl, purr, and make sounds outside human hearing range. Those raised among humans or near-humans tend to do this less, if at all, while cathar raised in more insular communities of their own kind can come off as taciturn due to heavier reliance on nonverbal communication.

Sense of smell is much stronger and more refined than a human’s and plays a more significant role in how they perceive and navigate the galaxy. They can occasionally be mistaken for Force-sensitive by humans due to their knack for picking up on emotional distress or the presence of particular species/people by scent. This is more true with people they’re familiar with; they won’t pick out distinct members of another species by default but can reliably identify the scent of a friend or anyone else they spend a lot of time around.

The exception to the above is other cathar, who they can easily tell apart as individuals by scent. They have scent glands around the jaw/neck that come into play for identification, conveying broad emotional states, in some situations can aid medical diagnoses, among other things. They also play a part in building connection and familiarity between friends, family, or romantic partners.

There’s an entertaining but widely-dreaded stage of cathar kitten development, which usually begins when they start learning motor skills and ends mercifully quickly once they’re in the forming-sentences stage of verbal language learning, where their one and only method of problem-solving is to start rapidly smacking whatever is causing them distress until it goes away or stops distressing them. Problems that are considered slap-worthy vary widely from kitten to kitten, including but not limited to a parent trying to get them into a bathtub, an insect that’s in their immediate area, food they don’t want to eat, an object that hurt when they tried to interact with it, an object that happens to be a color they don’t like, the Wrong Parent trying to comfort them, a piece of furniture they bumped into, their own limbs that aren’t doing what they want, and many more. Their claws at this stage are soft and there’s very little actual damage they can do, and it’s a healthy and important stage of kitten development, but first words are universally met with relief by cathar parents, who are usually ecstatic by then that they’ll soon be able to parent their child without getting bapped on the nose.

I’ve thrown the whole “cathar mate for life” idea out the window because I mean. They’re cats. While individual bonded pairs are a thing and they’ll often have someone they consider a primary partner, cathar are really good at nonmonogamy and prone to forming large, complex polycules and families that vary widely in size and structure. It’s also common for them to never have any formal partners at all and simply jump between isolated hookups, and some are perfectly content never to do anything else. Kittens are raised communally within families, and most of them will have more than two individuals they consider parental figures (sometimes in the form of multiple mothers and/or fathers, but family units can contain any combination of romantic partners, aunts and uncles, and assorted godparents who might be helping with kitten-rearing, as well as various grandparents). They don’t culturally have their own marriage practices, though many relationships are lifelong and an informal exchange of meaningful items/gifts as a show of love and commitment is common in some cathar culturs, but since leaving their home planet some have adopted the idea from other cultures, particularly if they’ve formed a bond with some other species of alien that does practice it.

The Horny Section

Cathar don’t really kiss the way humans do among themselves. Their equivalent is gentle biting around the neck and jaw, which is another situation where the scent glands are relevant. When aroused that whole area becomes an erogenous zone. Cathar raised/socialized around humans or near-humans do usually know how to kiss and do so with non-cathar partners, but the whole sandpaper tongue and fangs situation means that a lot of humanoids prefer not to attempt anything more than a very short and chaste kiss.

They tend to be very bitey in general unless specifically asked not to. It only becomes a problem if the cathar in question is inexperienced with humanoids and hasn’t figured out how much bite force is acceptable for a species with thinner, more sensitive skin.

Their dicks are fairly humanoid in size and shape, though somewhat more conical at the head, but they have a sheath rather than a foreskin. After maturity they don’t actually retract into the sheath more than about two inches when flaccid, and tend to be a bit less sensitive than the average human (same keratinization factor that affects circumcised humans). It also makes them more vulnerable to damage, but since it’s customary to wear pants on most civilized planets, that never really becomes a problem in the course of a normal day. The base of the shaft that’s usually covered by the sheath has much higher sensitivity and cathar are generally thrilled when they encounter someone who actually knows that and doesn’t assume they experience sensation exactly like a human.

Conventional understanding is that cathar dicks don’t have barbs, which is true the vast majority of the time, though about 60% of them have some amount of vestigial non-keratinous bumps over their head that have no noticeable affect on anything aside from slightly increased sensitivity. Rarely an individual might develop a few actual barbs at the onset of puberty, but they have no practical function and pose a risk of discomfort and injury, and can easily be removed via a fast and mostly painless medical procedure, so the number of adults who have them is close to zero.

Females do have (mild, and mainly not at all disruptive) heat cycles. Other cathar can generally tell by scent, but not to a distracting degree, and it’s considered rude and inappropriate to point it out with anyone but a close friend or partner. They can be suppressed with some forms of hormonal birth control and plenty choose to. It should go without saying that males don’t have heat cycles, but I’ve gotten enough weird DMs about this to know that I need to say it. Unless said male is trans and not on any sort of HRT, heat cycles are not a thing.

Females kind of have breasts, in that they’re present and obvious while they’re actively nursing a kitten, but they’re flat chested or nearly most of the time. Cathar also technically have eight nipples but only the top two are functional, or visually noticeable unless you’re severely violating their personal space.

Cathar tend to be stereotyped by humans as being rough domineering alpha types in bed, probably because of the biting and the average height difference (and, especially in Imperial space, the perception of them as a more “primitive” species due to their less humanoid appearance/mannerisms). While cathar like that exist just as humans like that exist, the stereotype does not hold up in reality and they have as wide a range of preferences as any sapient species.

Worldbuilding Weekend: Werewolves

- Attila and his pack are old world / European werewolves most closely related to the European grey wolf (if anything)

- the skeleton of a European (often called eldritch type) werewolf consists of layers of bone that can slide in position to compensate for changing limb length during transformation. Similarly, the skull is made of several layers of bone that can slide outward to form a snout. (This also makes xrays quite tricky.)

- the transformation is controllable and without set stages but the body tolerates a fully human or fully wolf form best - compare it to a bone healing in a wrong position, it works but it's not good

- werewolves are, even in their "human"/humanoid form, not human. Once turned, their entire metabolism, bone structure, and even genetic makeup changes

- werewolves are among the few non-feline animal shifters with protractable claws: Sasha, who lost two finger joints long before he was turned, walks with a slight limp in wolf form

Wise Dogs and Dreamland Cats

Wise dogs are dogs who follow an ancient magical tradition, granting them human-like intelligence and a magical awareness of the world not afforded to most other animals.  Some have even learned how to be effectively immortal, but such magic is rare. 

Wise Dogs are, first and foremost, dogs.  They are quadrupedal, and thus cannot work things with their hands, only their paws.  As dogs, they have +2 Dexterity and +3 Perception, with a minimum Perception of 5.   Dogs can bite for 3 x (strength+1) Slash/Stab damage.  They also have Acute senses (Smell) and Enhanced Senses, as well as night vision.  Finally, physically, they have a +10 to their speed. On the negative side, they are color blind, and, well, animals.  They can also only speak to those with Magic in then, (sorcerers, demons, faeries, etc.) or those with animal-sides (such as Werewolves and Moreaus).  Among animals, however, they are perfectly able to communicate.  Be it dogs, cats, or even frogs. They may not have much to say, but they can be asked. 

Wise dogs also have a Basic Supernatural Sense, allowing them to ‘sniff out’ various supernatural beings, such as ghosts and vampires. 

Wise Dogs are eventually taught magic by their pack, but that comes once they proved themselves. 

The pack acts as a 3 point contact, but also a 2 point obligation.  They also have Adversary (Supernatural Predators) 3. As carnivores, they have a mild anti-social impulse to violence due to their predator’s instincts. 

Most dogs are also a bit smaller than a person, but this is purchased separately.  As is, this represents a medium or large breed of dog.  

Dreamlands Cat (16-Point Quality)

Cats are magical.  Everyone knows this, but few know how far that goes.  Cats are smart, can talk if they so choose, and know actual magic.  

As a Cat, they are quadrupedal, colorblind, Carnivorous, and small.  While they take 1/2 damage from falls, their life point total is also halved.  They also do 1/2 their normal listed damage when their attributes are used in combat for damage purposes.  They have a -1 to any ranged attack they make (including spells), but have a +1 to hit human sized targets, and a +3 to Stealth tests. 

Cats have a +3 to Dexterity and +3 Perception, as well as Acute Senses (Smell) and Enhanced Senses, again requiring a minimum Perception of 5.  They can bite for 3 x (Strength+1) Slash/Stab damage, and claw with all 4 feet for 3 x Strength Slash/Stab damage.  These also provide a +3 bonus to climbing. 

Dreamlands Cats can communicate with other animals and animal like beings as well as people (if they feel like it).   They also have Innate Magic and the Blink power at level 1.  

Oh, and they have nine lives.  When killed, they reform in the dreamlands in (1d10 x 2) hours. This works as the Revenant ability when forming new stats.  They can reform 8 times after being killed. 

On the negative side, they are Cats are... Cats. They are pets in the human world and treated as such.  They suffer from Delusions (Mild Feline Indifference), Mild Cruelty, a mild anti-social impulse to violence due to their carnivorous nature. 

They have Adversary (5) from many demons and monsters of the dreamlands, such as ghouls, zoogs, gugs, and sarturnian cats.  Cats do have a hierarchical society that gives them Obligation (Important) to most cats. 

Some dreamlands cats can act as familiars for witches. But only if they want to.

disclaimer — honestly I have no clue what this is but it’s Halloween and I at least wanted to write SOMETHING that was witch related so that’s why this is so short 🙃

“Gosh… [y/n], I’m so sorry,” Jisung spluttered out, shoving every single object on his desk towards the back to give himself more room. Small little glasses bottles of odd concoctions clinked together as he roughly shoved them to the side, a few spilling whatever liquid that was inside or falling off the desk in an unorthodox manner.

The boy cursed to himself as he tried to catch the falling glasses and clean up the small mess he had created, unusually uncoordinated. “I didn’t know it was you so I went on defense immediately and—“

“You’re fine,” you tell him, jumping up into the clear part of the desk with unfamiliar feline ease. “I should know not to sneak up on you but what can we do?”

It was really your fault if you were going to be completely honest. You’ve known the boy for a while, it was a friendship you had been kindling for around five months or so. Sneaking up on a nearly defenseless witch in broad daylight wasn’t going to end well for either of the parties involved. Out of pure adrenaline and the need to survive he had shot a spell at you, a low-powered one for a witch of his caliber, but a spell nonetheless.

Upon impact your form began to shift wildly, your stomach churning with easiness and bile rising your throat at the unnatural changes that your body was enduring.

Once you fell to the ground after your body had completely changed shape, you nearly vomited any and everything you had eaten that morning. You would not recommend going through a transformation of any kind, no matter how good of a deal the witch seemed to give you. One hundred percent, do not recommend.

Luckily, your unplanned transformation had simply turned you into a cat, a small, green-eyed feline with silky black fur. You still retained the ability to speak, which was good enough for you, but you couldn’t help but let your mind wander… Imagine the amount of pain you’d be forced to endure if Jisung had turned you into anything smaller or even anything larger? It sent shivers down your spine just thinking about it.

“I don’t know if I have anything to turn you back,” the witch boy confessed, his eyes putting his urge to slam his head into the dark wood desk. “I’ve never dappled in transformation spells before now… it was something new I was working on while you were away to keep myself busy. I thought you were a witch hunter at first so I just tried whatever I knew at the time and—“

“Hey, don’t be so down on yourself,” you encourage him, stretching out your feline body across the desk. “At least you know the spell works! Or at least… you can do it even if a cat wasn’t what you were aiming for.”

“Something of the sort,” Jisung confirmed. “Anything small and unable to do significant harm. I blame Minho, he came back earlier with his familiars and all I could think about was cats for a few hours.”

“With his cats?” You stress, your whiskers twitching at the thought of Minho traveling around the countryside with his three familiars in tow. “That’s… strange. It’s not normal for him to take them anywhere knowing that if he gets killed by witch hunters his familiars will be felt all alone.”

“I needed his help,” the witch boy clarified, sitting up from the desk and scrambling over towards the cabinet of unfinished potion bottles. With a quick flick of his magic fingers, a seal placed upon the cabinet appeared to the naked eye. It glowed for a moment, shining with a bright purple hue before the cabinet made a clicking sound and unlocked itself. “There’s this potion I’ve been trying to make for a few months now but I had to postpone it because I didn’t have any familiars to strengthen my powers.”

You dropped off the desk with ease, having to stop yourself from becoming overwhelmed by how large everything was compared to you as you trotted over towards Jisung. “Strengthen you? But aren’t you already a powerful witch? I mean… you’re not known as one of the greatest witches of this era for nothing.”

“Well, yeah,” He shrugged, basking in your small compliment before he began digging around in the cabinet. “But there aren certain spells and potions I can’t even do on my own. A familiar boosts your power because of the magic bond you two agree to, they lend you their innate magical ability and you take care of them. It’s a win-win situation when you have a familiar.” Jisung grinned when once he got his hands on a bottle, covering the top where the cork should have been to make sure whatever brew was inside didn't spill.

The witch leaned down to your temporary height, holding out the small glass vial for you to see. The bottle held a hot and angry red liquid inside, bubbling and festering with a sizzling sound like there was a fire inside. “A potion of the soulless,” He told you as you reached out your cat paw to touch the bottle, hissing and scurrying backward on instinct when you felt the bottle begin to burn the pads under your paws. “It’s from the book that Changbin gave me maybe a year or ago, it said that it’s supposed to allow me to bring the undead to my aid or end the life of my undead enemies. Pretty cool, right?”

“What are you trying to do with an undead potion when you don’t even work with the undead?” You hiss at him, narrowing your eyes between the potion and the witch boy in front of you. He seemed to be completely unaware and unaffected by the sizzling and burning touch of the potion bottle, carrying it within his hands like it was ice cold water.

You didn’t like the idea of anyone who wasn’t practicing within the arts of the undead to be playing around in its potions and spells, even if Jisung was a talented witch himself. There was just a certain evil that it radiated for those who weren’t cautious of its consequences.

“Uh, because it sounds cool as hell?” Jisung responded, placing the vial back in its place in the cabinet. Once he closed its doors the magic seal he placed upon it shined again, locking the unfinished potions inside once again. “Imagine the type of defense I could have against witch hunters who would dare come and hunt me down then? I mean… just think about the cool infamous nicknames they’ll give me? Han Jisung, the Wicked Witch King of the Dead, doesn’t that sound cool?”

“I think you need to take this a little more seriously,” You urged him. It’s not that you like seeing his childlike fantasies when it came to the ups and downs of being a witch, but this just wasn’t the time.

“I am taking this seriously,” he tried to convince you, picking up your cat form with ease and lifting you into his arms. It took you a moment to get used to the lankiness of your body, involuntarily stretching out once he put his hands under your small cat shoulders.

You squirmed within his grasp, trying to jump back to the safety of the ground as quickly as you could but ultimately failing as Jisung began to speak again. “I’m just thinking about what the future may hold when I finish this potion. There are so many possibilities and scenarios in which I could use it I can’t help but fantasize about it.”

“But Jisung,” You tried the protest, your claws digging into the flesh of his arm as he leaned down at his desk that held his already finished potions. He wasn’t paying much attention to you now, his other hand hovering around each uniquely colored liquid and reading the label on it to make sure he was grabbing the right thing.

“Don’t worry about it, [y/n],” He told you, grabbing ahold of a potion bottle with a sparkling pink liquid inside of it. The boy’s eyes scanned the writing on the label as he spoke,” I promise I’ll be extra careful when using it, I’ll only use it when I’m in mortal danger if that makes you feel any better. Right now let’s focus on getting you out of this cat form sooner than later.”

He placed off the sparkling potion of the side of the desk before searching the rest of his stock, a frown on his face when he couldn’t find anything he needed. Amid his frustration you finally squirm out of his grasp, nearly falling to the ground had you not sunk your claws into the fabric of his shirt to keep yourself up. “I’m not really focused on that right now,” You tell him, finally getting his attention as you climb around his back and shoulders in an unruly manner. “That vital was glowing red and hot to the touch, I don’t think you should be playing with this sort of thing.”

“Red?” He questioned, dropping whatever potions he had in his hands on to the desk. Jisung took a hold of you again so he could look you in your slitted eyes, a genuine look of confusion crossing his face. “What do you mean red? [y/n], that potion is dark green and cold.”

“It’s bright red and hot like a fire,” you insist, gesturing your head towards the cabinet where he stored it. “I touched it and it nearly burned me, I think I would know if it was hot or cold.”

The boy stared at you in pure disbelief, unable to comprehend the words that were coming out of your mouth. He held you within his arms again when he picked up the sparkling bottle from earlier and held it up to your face. “What color is this to you then?”

“Pink.”

“It’s gold.” He corrected you, putting the potion bottle down. “The portion inside... is gold…”

“Aren’t cats colorblind?” You manage to ask after a moment of silence, trying to fill up the still air with your voices once more. “Maybe that’s why I thought the potion of the soulless was red and that that’s pink… but it doesn’t excuse the fact that when I touched that other potion it was hot.”

“Even if cats are colorblind, that spell I casted on you shouldn’t haven’t changed you that drastically,” Jisung argued. “The spell changed your physical appearance, nothing about your genetics was changed.”

“So then…” you trailed off, feeling your stomach begin to twist and churn once again. The spell he casted on you must have finally begun to wear off. “Why am I seeing different colors from you?”

“Only familiars can see the true colors of magic and potions so that they can warn witches of what magic will have a positive or negative effect on them,” Jisung told you, “It’s a part of their bond, a duty that familiars fulfill to protect their witches at any cost. The mere fact that what you’re seeing now is probably the true colors of these potions...”

“[y/n], there is a very high possibility that despite being human… you’re a familiar.” He explained to you, not even believing the words that were coming out of his mouth. “It shouldn’t be possible because normal humans don’t have any sort of innate magic power but... you...”

“Oh,” you respond with a bewildered smile, your brain unable to process what the witch had told you. Cautiously Jisung put you down on the ground again, stepping back and away from you as you began to retain your original form once again.

A combination of the wrenched stomach pains from the spell wearing off and now new headaches you had gained from the information were sending your body in for one wild trip. This was certainty not the way you had planned to spend your day.

You glanced towards the sparkling bottle from earlier, hoping and praying to whatever god these witches followed that this was some sick joke being played on you. And yet despite your desperation the liquid inside of the portion bottle remained the same sparkling pink from when you were a cat. “Oh, how lovely. I’m a familiar.”

“This is bad,” Jisung stressed. “This is very, very bad.”

I have genuinely never thought on this before so here I go literally planning out my entire headcanons on sight and color theory in Tyria for my characters and the races they’re from! This is gonna get very long especially since it also has all my >50 characters so click the read more for too much info~

ASURA

As a race that lived a subterranean lifestyle initially, they would have developed a low color vision, but since coming to the surface the race has been slowly adapting and developing for the wide range of colors and extremely high light intake by acquiring the ability to differentiate colors more. As that is now, I see them as having about human range of standard color differentiation with the chance for color blindness, but with significantly lower color vibrancy. Hence the need for bright and clearly differentiable colors being worn to denote differing groups and colleges.

As a standard rule they have a smaller (but still varied) color range with higher contrast for vision as a race that lives specifically in more monochromatic snowy ranges. However, they also over time develop the color vision range of the animal they connect with once they dedicate themselves to a specific spirit of the Wilds. For example, a norn without a spirit connection would fall into the standard range while a norn connected to eagle would have a wider range and a norn connected to wolf would have a smaller range

SYLVARI

As a race created consciously, with goals and intentions for some of the individuals, the range of sight can vary immensely. Those who work jobs such as gardeners, Grove tenders, and menders have an exceptionally wide range of color perception to detect even the slightest discoloration or wilting in a plant or fellow sylvari. Wardens who have a need to protect sylvari and the Pale Tree from outside threats have a desaturated color range, though with higher contrast for easier movement detection along with a stronger visual connection to the dream to visually spot Dreamers, Soundless, and Courtiers. Wyld Hunt valiants have what would be considered a standard color range to cover the general bases for the best chance of success in the environments they may roam through. Nightmare courtiers experience a loss and standardization of their vision to a much narrower variety of green and brown visuals, having fled the Dream for an alternative. Soundless maintain the vision they had as Dreamers since they are still technically connected to the Dream. Those sylvari who have been disconnected from the Dream, but not through Nightmare, have their standar color range with a lower vibrancy to it.
