Chapter One: Last of their kind
Chapter 2
Tumblr media
Love had always felt like a distant dream to Nessa.
A fantasy one's imagination makes up to cope with the everlasting loneliness of what it meant to be a ranger. Even more so when she was turned away from the only place she could call home.
Even if she never particularly liked the elves, her being half-elf meant she grew up in the core of Elvish life. Rivendell. Her mother who was dying of a broken heart didn't help either. Especially since she is still knocking on death's door years later. Nessa presumed it would be easier to deal with her mother as if she's already passed than to watch her slowly dying.
It's not like her mother would care anyway. The last she heard of her was that she was doing much better since Nessa left. Seeing her daughter obsess over everything fairy-related must've been the cause for her decline. And Nessa's leaving, despite how horrible it sounds, made her survive.
Being Half-Elf and growing up in Rivendell meant Nessa would have always been fighting to fit into a world that saw her as a joke. A 5'3 half-elf half-fairy whose loud bubbly and, at most, eccentric personality only made her stick out like a sore thumb. I guess she could blame the fairy genes for that...But she never wanted to blame her fairy heritage for anything! The few times she had heard about the Fae from her mother appealed to her greatly. The lost race of the fairies would always hold a place in her heart. She was proud of her origin.
The Fairyland, though practically nonexistent today, sounded like the perfect place for her. If only it wasn't for the major depletion it accumulated in all of time, she would be living the dream by now. Thus her Elvish mother took her to Rivendell when she was a baby.
Also, because her fairy father flew off. (Literally.)

In a quiet clearing on the outskirts of a woodland, near a village in Bree, Nessa received a letter.
Upon opening, almost unreadable scribbles - assumed to be due to someone's shaky old hands scrambling to write their last words from their death bed - become clear and her theory of someone old writing this letter only made more sense to her as she began to read;
Dear, long lost sister.
My name is Rogue. All I've been told is that we have the same father. Sometime after he left you he became my father also. So, I am writing you this letter in the hopes that you may want to talk. You don't know me and I don't know you and yet we're sisters. Deep down I know you will do anything for me and I'll do the same for you.
This is why I want to ask, Would you like to meet in person? I will be arriving shortly.
We sure have a lot to catch up on. Time is of the essence, my dear sister.
From,
Rogue.
Nessa's eyes were as wide as her pet Owl's when she refused to give her another treat, and her mouth was agape. Nessa's had a long-lost sister this whole time and only finds out now?!
If this sister is who they say they are, they must be old now, as she speculates. Half-human. Half-Fae. Rogue is right, time is not on their side. Death seems to follow Nessa and even still, plagues a half-Fae-half-human.
The sweet hoot of her owl (Pilvi) and the gentle flapping of its wings brought Nessa back to her surroundings. She must pack a bag immediately. Food. Water. Medicine if needed. What state is Rogue in? Are they ill? Is that why they've waited all this time to contact them? Humans don't live long after all. Or had they only just heard about Nessa, as Nessa had about them? Is it too late to meet them? She received this letter weeks ago...
Her pet owl hooted again.
"Aw Pilvi, sorry, were you hooting for me?" Nessa caressed her bird and watched her enjoy it. Pilvi's eyes squinted and her head relaxed as if the loving touch could melt her.
Her precious hoot filled the room once again and Nessa cooed back, softly speaking to her.
Interrupting them, a knock sounded. It was uncommon for Nessa to receive visitors. Not after the fairyland practically died out. This must be some kind of trick, ironically.
Pilvi was flustered. Her wings sprayed in and out continually. After calming her owl down, Nessa grabbed the nearest item that she could find, which could be used as a weapon.
A frying pan.
Nessa slowly opened the door, peering out. An unknown figure stood in the pouring rain. Their fur cloak visibly weighed heavy on their shoulders as it soaked with rain. Along with wet blue locks of hair that peaked from under their hood.
"Oh, my, are you lost?" Nessa asked worriedly. She pondered to herself as to what might have happened to this poor soul out there in the woods in the rain.
"I am Rogue, your sister."
"Oh. You're not old,"
Rogue blinked in surprise.
"Excuse me?"
"You're human. Aren't you supposed to be old? Dying on your deathbed?" Nessa waved the frying pan about as she confusingly tangented. "That's why you asked to meet. And your handwriting...very shaky!" She pointed the pan in Rogue's direction who, in return, produced a blank stare.
The frantic waving of the frying pan returned along with another tangent from Nessa and before they knew it they were bickering like sisters do. Amongst the chaos Rogue managed to snatch the frying pan, tired of Nessa waving it too close to their face for their liking.
"GIVE IT BACK!" Nessa shrieked.
This continued for a few moments until Nessa suddenly screamed
"OLD CREEPY MAN!" as she pointed to someone not that far behind Rogue.
Rogue turned around and tried not to show her annoyance at the man. "Speaking of old, that is Gandalf. He's not creepy, he's a wizard."
A long pause comes as all three take long looks at each other.
"OLD CREEPY WIZARD?!?!" Nessa screamed again and in this moment of distraction, she grabbed the frying pan back and held it up as if she was going to do damage.
Rogue yelled out for her and swiftly snatched it again. "I'm half human. HALF. I'm not old."
"Then stop flailing like a child." Gandalf scolded as he walked closer to them, staff in hand.
"She started it!-" Rogue began as Gandalf stopped them again.
"Long-lost sister. Wizard. I think I'm going to faint." Nessa felt her forehead with her hand. The cold rain did nothing to cool her down.
"Let me help with that," Rogue declared as they took a purple glowing flower from their bag and the next thing Nessa saw was darkness.
_________________
Nessa stirred in her sleep, her nose twitched at the smell of
Pipe-weed. She had the weirdest dream. There was a wizard and her long-lost sister!?
She opened her eyes, expecting to be in her bed. Alone. Maybe with Pilvi by her side. And a book. But no. A figure with long blue hair, braided sporadically, leaned over her. Her dream was real. Though, no wizard in sight. Maybe that was the part her dream made up.
Before she could start to question anything and everything, Rogue placed a hand over her mouth and sent her a look, asking for trust. Nessa nodded and the hand was taken off her mouth.
Rogue slowly held out her hands for Nessa to hold. The single touch of their palms caused a glimmering shine to arise across their skin almost as if they were made of glitter. Their glowing veins painted the room in gold.
They studied their skin for what felt like years, unable to look away. "Fae markings," Nessa whispered, releasing a breath she didn't know she was holding.
"Fae markings," Rogue repeated, pleased that her trick worked.
"You're my sister!"
"Of course I am. Now let's get down to business," They gently let go of Nessa's hands, and the glow dimmed until it was no more.
Rogue took a chair, spinning it around to sit on it backwards,
"Would you like to help a group of Dwarves take back their land?"
"Too right!" Nessa wholeheartedly agreed. She had nothing to lose. With the died-out fairyland and all, she also most certainly understood their wanting to take back land. These sisters finally reunited, the last of their kind would be helping the dwarves reclaim their home, as they wished others would have helped the Fae.
"You didn't make up that wizard, by the way."
"How did you know-"

Comments/Notes: From the imagine, "You put a spell on Thorin to make him fall in love with you, but as the spell wears off, you find out that he has always loved you." Requested by @asgardianhobbit98
Written while listening to Journey's Greatest Hits.
I hope you like the fic. As always, like, reblog and comment if you enjoy. If you wish to be added to any of my tag lists, let me know.
Thank you to everyone who supported me during my posting hiatus. I felt like it was needed to get back into a better mindset after I become incredibly overwhelmed by another one of my fics' reception.
The last twenty four hours had been beyond perfect. The spell which you had been keeping for the last few months, ready for the chance to use, had worked better than you could have imagined. Thorin had declared undying love to you as the sun set; the two of you having just shared dinner together with a large group. Then once on your own together, he had been so open in his affection toward you, blushing and smiling as the words tumbled out of his mouth.
“I love you more than anything,” he had told you, confident and bold. He had taken your hand, kissed it, then asked for you to join him on the royal balcony.
The two of you had sipped wine, while Thorin gazed at you over the top of the glass, unable to tear his gaze from you.
You shared tender kisses, hand holding, and Thorin had held you as you fell asleep. Then you woke in his arms, warm and content. He had been watching you, and as you woke from your slumber, he smiled at you and kissed your head.
All of that day and you had remained in Thorin’s presence, sharing meals, conversations, kisses.
“Would you join me again tonight on the balcony? It is forecast that we should have a clear night sky.”
“Of course,” you had replied. Only now, sadness began to seep from your words, unable to hide any further. The realisation that all of this would be over at sundown was growing heavy in your heart and gut. The spell would only last for one twenty four hour period, and could only ever be used on one person once in their life. After sundown, and Thorin would return to his former self, purely a friend to you and your King, nothing more than that.
It was almost sundown, and you excused yourself from Thorin’s chambers, telling him that you wished to quickly write a letter to a friend. He just smiled at you, his eyes so full of adoration, as you disappeared out of the door.
As you walked the corridors back to your bed chamber, you felt tears fall down your cheeks. The pain was so heavy and hot in your chest. Just to have Thorin adore you for twenty four hours had been perfect beyond any kind of comprehension. However, the fall back to reality was going to be excruciating. In time, another woman would have Thorin fall for them, and this time it would be of his own choice.
You lit your candles and sat down on the edge of your bed, staring at the vase of roses that Thorin had had brought to your chamber. They could now be disposed of as they would just serve as a reminder of your pathetic need to have Thorin love you.
All sense of time slipped away from you as you fell asleep on your bed, still fully dressed. Once you had lay out on your bed, you had not moved. Tears had flowed, pulling you into your subconscious world where you could be happy temporarily.
Dreams came and went, flickering pictures of far off lands that you had explored with the Company, months earlier, where you had fallen for their leader. Flashes of sunlight bouncing off swords and the calls of armies became a jumble in your mind.
Your eyes opened slowly, adjusting. The candles had gone out hours ago. There was a dull thump behind your eyes and you winced, blinking hard.
For a second, you felt as if you were still in a dream somewhere. You could feel something resting on your waist, curled around. Blinking again, you looked down and could make out a hand. On the middle finger was a ring.
You gasped and shifted away suddenly, almost dropping out of bed. “What?” you choked.
Thorin was lying on your bed, and was now rousing. His eyes opened slowly and he smiled at the sight of you. “Come back to bed, my love,” he said sleepily. “It’s still early.”
“But…how?”
He just smiled again and sat up. “You think a spell could make me love you?”
“How did you know about it?”
“I’ve known about it quite some time now,” he replied. “I will not name any names, but I was made aware that you acquired the spell from someone in Lake-town, did you not?”
Shame hit you hard and you lowered your head, feeling the tears fall once again. “I’m sorry,” you said softly. “And now you are playing along to mock me; the spell wore off at night fall yesterday.”
Thorin got up from the bed and followed the edge of it towards you. “Why would you think I’d ever mock you?” He stood before you, his head to once side in question and disbelief that you could ever think such a thing.
“I was stupid to ever think you could love me,” you hissed.
Anger flared in Thorin’s eyes and on impulse he grabbed your hip and threw you both into a kiss. It was hot, demanding, needing. So much unlike the day earlier. All you could do in your weakness was cling to him, your backside resting against your dresser. He was pressing into you harder now, his tongue desperate in your mouth.
Thorin drew back from you, his blue eyes ablaze. They were no longer soft like the day before, but they were on fire. That had always been the true Thorin, and as you had known him for the last six months: passionate, on fire. He pressed his forehead to you and then kissed it.
You closed your eyes as you felt his hand become buried in your hair. His other hand was still on your hip. There was a desperation in his actions. The day earlier and he had wanted to be in your company, to look upon you. Now, he needed to touch you.
The two of you kissed again, hard and needing. You could feel your inhibitions let go, and your hands became tangled up in his hair, your breath lost, your heart pounding.
He whispered your name, needing you.
Within minutes and the two of you were back on your bed, disrobed and exploring each other. Thorin’s lips caressed every inch of you, and when he was kissing down the inside of your thigh, he looked up at you. “Why did you ever think you needed a spell to capture my heart? It was always yours.”
The two of you joined, exhaling in relief at the pent up frustration. Thorin was over you, his one hand gripping yours. To feel him connected with you, feel him inside you, giving himself over to you by choice, that was the true magic.
Your bodies were synchronised, moving together in rhythm so well.
Each and every time Thorin’s gaze connected with yours, and you could see the love for you there. It burned. The spell you had cast had diluted his true love, and his gaze the day earlier had been as if he weren’t quite in the room with you. Now he was present for every second.
Every thrust was now making you build upward towards climax. The sensations feeling as if waves were cascading down your body, until the last one took hold. It came from the base of your stomach, and shattered outward. You shook, and as you rode out that one spectacular wave, Thorin kept his gaze locked on you.
The sensation of you gripping Thorin’s girth in your plateau pushed him over the edge, and he spilled. He dug his head against your neck, groaning at the wondrous pleasure that washed over him.
Both of you fell down beside each other, panting and sweating. Thorin reached for you, and you rolled over to him, and put your head on his chest. “Is that what true love feels like?” you gasped.
“No spell could ever replicate that,” Thorin said softly. “When you first placed the spell on me, it was as if I couldn’t control my words, and no longer could I keep my feelings for you secret. But the expression of my love for you, it…I cannot describe it. It was as if it was dulled, and when dusk came, the spell having ended, my heart and my body burned for you again, like it always had. The spell stopped me feeling that love in a true sense.”
“Why did you never tell me how you felt?” you asked, propping yourself up on your arm.
“I was terrified of rejection. The spell at least took away my cowardice.”
“You’re the bravest man I’ve ever known, and yet you couldn’t tell me you loved me?” you asked, not quite able to believe such a revelation. “You lead a kingdom, and armies, yet you couldn’t tell me three simple words.”
Thorin sighed. “You did not tell me either.”
“I had reason not to,” you scoffed. “You’re a king. Declaring your love to a king and expecting them to love you in return is just ridiculous.”
You saw that anger flare in Thorin’s eyes again, and his jaw clenched. “I am a king in name and by my birth right. But I am no different to you in heart. There is only one that I bow to, and that is my wife and Queen. And those positions will only ever be filled by one person…you.”

Just Out of Reach- Ladyhawk AU; Bilbo and Thorin were getting married in Laketown in secret when a curse was placed upon them. Now Thorin becomes a raven by day and Bilbo a raccoon by night so that they can never be together as hobbit and dwarf again unless they fulfill the catastrophic wishes of the curse bearer, whoever he may be...
Oakenshield: Prince or Thief?- Robin Hood AU; Everyone knows the story: After King Thrain took his best warriors, including Crown Prince Thorin, only to be slain by the orc forces in Khazad-dum, his advisor, Lord Smaug, was placed in charge and all the lands of Erebor suffered. Fortunately, rising past the oppressive tyranny was the one and only Oakenshield, to rob from the rich and give to the poor. In reality though...that's not quite accurate. For one thing, there are actually two beings claiming to be 'Oakenshield' with vastly different objectives, and then there's the small problem of them not being aware of the other until Bilbo comes across a rather interesting Company of dwarves in Mirkwood.
The Raven Prince- Swan Princess AU; Thorin never gave much thought to his fiancé past how much he didn't want to have a fiancé, especially not this hobbit. However, after the mysterious death of the Shire Kingdom's monarchs and Bilbo's disappearance, Erebor is approached by a sorcerer who flexes his power and influence on Thorin. Now he's a raven and he must somehow save Bilbo, save his kingdom, and get his father's blessing before it's too late.
To Spoon Feed You Comfort- Accidental Marriage AU; Marriage in the Shire is a relatively easy process. All you have to do is get your intended to eat from your hand crafted Love Spoon, and return the gesture. Bilbo was already displeased by his unexpected house guests but when the newest arrival used his Love Spoon to eat from...well none could blame the hobbit for fainting if they knew the circumstances.
An Unexpected Gift on a Journey to You- Dwobbit Frodo; Bilbo went back to the Shire, and Thorin couldn't necessarily blame him. However, eight years later, he starts to miss what once was and what could be and decides to journey to the Shire to plead forgiveness. Only problem, Bilbo supposedly had left for Erebor months before. Why had he not made it? Where was their former burglar? And what was with this little hobbit child who supposedly had been living with Bilbo?

HII <33 So i know you have a lot of writing you may still be working on, so there's absolutely NO pressure into writing this right now, but as a fellow Tolkien fan, I am actually IN LOVE with Thorin Oakenshield. I don't know if you have written for the Hobbit yet, and like I said you don't have to do this if you're busy or you just haven't explored writing for the hobbit! but i was wondering if i could maybe get a fic for him <333 i thought maybe it'd be cool to see how you write for a different fandom too (not that your writing for rdr2 isn't already FANTASTIC)
I was thinking, maybe you could write something where it's at the time that the company is at Erebor and Thorin is starting to get his dragon sickness, and perhaps the reader (it can be from any POV!) frustrates him by simply trying to tell him his behavior is getting harsh and he lashes out on them, making them flinch / cry (or both) and they get afraid of him. When he sees that happens he changes back to himself and he suddenly gets very apologetic and he kisses them and hugs them, and that leads to maybe some spicy stuff? 👀 That part is entirely up to you though love <333
but anyway, its just an idea I thought would be interesting! Like i said, if you don't have the interest to write it, no worries at all! And since your very busy its okay if it takes a while to get done if you do write it <3
👀 This story is so juicy! I haven't written anything from The Hobbit since I was a teen, but they're my favorite movies (and even my bedroom is Hobbit themed lmao) so I feel pretty confident I can whip something up for you. Thorin is a fantastic character all around. I'll add it to my story list 💖💖 Do you have a preference for the reader's race? Should they be a hobbit, dwarf, elf, or a man? 🤔

(Part 1) I shaved my head today and was wondering if you could write a fic of a fem!reader from this world shaving her head after a few weeks in middle earth and the dwarves and Bilbo being confused while Gandalf isn’t for some wizardly reason. Hope this isn’t too much!
(Part 2) Sorry if I’ve already sent it, but maybe you could do a little thing where a reader who is from this world that is brought in by Gandalf somehow? And after a while she gets annoyed by how dirty and tangled her hair has gotten so she uses one of the weapons to shave her head? And the company is confused on why she would do that and doesn’t recognize her at first? Like they point their weapons at her and ask who she is ending with them confused and laughing? And asking questions?
Tumblr media
Word count 1,166
Months you had been travelling with the company of Thorin Oakenshield, after Gandalf somehow dragged you from your own world into Middle Earth and still didn’t know how to get you back home, even Lord Elrond didn’t know, you had a part to play in this adventure, and only after you had completed your task the way home would be seen.
Your hair had become so matted and dirty within the months, you did have a small hairbrush in your bag that you had been carrying with you when you arrived, but that was lost when you and the company ended up in goblin town and the goblins searched your bag and took everything that was in there, you weren’t really bothered about your money as you knew you couldn’t spend it here in Middle Earth, but you really missed your hairbrush and the small pouch you kept spare hair ties and clips in. As a girl you always had a few hair ties on your wrists, but after a while, those snapped as your hair got thicker and thicker full of dirt and knots, even Kili had shared some of his ties with you but at last, they snapped too.
….
Laying on the ground you were currently looking up at the stars, listening to the sound of snores coming from the sleeping company, lifting yourself up to your elbows you looked around and saw it was Gandalf’s turn on lookout duty, pushing yourself to your feet you gently made your way over to Gandalf dodging feet and hands on your way over, before lowing yourself down next to the wizard, seeing Bilbo at his side, writing in his journal away in his own world you thought as you said a soft “Good evening” as not to scare them with your sudden appearance.
“Good evening” both Gandalf and Bilbo greeted back with a soft smile before going back to what they were doing, sitting quietly next to the wizard you were trying to build up the courage you ask your question, when Gandalf broke the silence “I know what you are about to ask me (Y/n), and it’s not possible, because if it was I would have done it for you already.”
Looking up at Gandalf you wet your lips “So you can’t spell my hair to not be knotty?”
“No I can’t” Gandalf said, taking a puff from his pipe.
“Yet you can turn people into animals” You said adding a little sarcasm to it.
“That is different, I spell the whole body, not just one point if I could help you I would, I’m sorry (Y/n)” Gandalf said patting your back and giving you a kind smile.
Nodding your head you stared out into the night hearing the sound of a river not too far away, and an idea popped into your brain as you smiled to yourself, raising to your feet you wet your lips “I’m going for a wash” you said as Bilbo nodded and Gandalf had a sly smile like he could read your mind.
Feeling the water cascade over your body, you felt your muscles relax as you laid on your back, looking up at the sky as you could see the dawn was approaching with the sky being painted with oranges, pinks, and red hues, it had been a while since you and the company weren’t running for your lives and you could enjoy the simple moments in life, sitting up in the river you reached for your borrowed sword and knives and pulled the first strand of hair in front of your eyes, and got to work.
….
Looking around the camp the company started to panic finding the wizard and hobbit fast asleep and you know where to be seen, calling out for you Thorin ordered the company to draw their weapons as Ori packed up your bag and placed it next to his in hopes you were coming back.
Hearing your name being shouted as you made your way back to camp you smiled at yourself knowing the wizard and hobbit would be sleeping, this was the fourth time this has happened so far, breaking into a sprite to get back to camp before Thorin blew up and Gandalf and Bilbo you shouted out “I’m fine, I just went for a bath and lost track of time.”
“I hear her” Ori shouted to the company as Bilbo and Gandalf were rudely awoken by Thorin slapping the back of their heads before turning his eyes to the tree line as a woman with no hair stepped out of it, making all the dwarves gasp and point their weapons at the intruder.
Throwing your hands up in the air you let out a laugh at their shock faces “Guys it is me, it’s (y/n)” you spoke as you looked at each one of them seeing the fear and confusion in their eyes.
“What have you done to (y/n)” Thorin’s voice boomed across the field as he stomped forward holding his sword out, making you lift an eyebrow at the dwarf king.
“I am (y/n)” you argued, placing your hands on your hip staring down at the king, clearly annoyed at his actions.
“No you’re not, (y/n) had long hair, you’re an imposture” Thorin argued back.
“I know I did, it was tangled as fuck and Gandalf is a shit wizard who dragged me here from my world and he can’t even spell my hair not to get knotty” you screamed  “No offence Gandalf” you added and watched the wizard wave his hand at you.
“It’s really her” Gandalf said as he stepped next to you lowing Thorin’s sword with his hand as the company followed suit.
“Why did you cut your hair off?” a small voice asked from the back as all eyes turned to it to see Ori holding one of his drawings of you with your long hair.
Pushing your way over to him you sat on the floor and told him your reasons as the rest of the company sat down and started to listen, “it’s not really a big deal, people from my world cut their hair like this all the time” you said as you ended defending your actions.
“Well actually hair is sacrate to us dwarves and part of our culture” Ori said, making you feel bad for what you had just done.
“Well the good news is my hair will grow back, and I promise I won’t go so dramatic with the hair cut next time” you said holding a smile as Ori smiled up at you with puppy dog eyes.
“So people in your world do this to their hair all the time?” Kili asked as the rest of the company nodded along clearly wanting to know the answer.
Inhaling a deep breath, you started to tell them about your world as you had never really talked about it and you answered any and all of the company questions.

The Hobbit Fan Fiction/Thorin Oakenshield x Fem!fairy!elf!oc

Chapter Two: Comforts of Home
Tumblr media
Nessa hadn't known much of The Shire or its inhabitants. Though Rogue apparently did as throughout almost the entire journey to The Shire, Rogue had complained about a Hobbit being allowed, no, asked, to join them on the quest. And it hadn't stopped now, even when they arrived in Hobbiton.
"Can we talk about something else now?" Nessa whined.
"What?"
"The whole journey here you've been complaining about a Hobbit joining us."
"Not my problem a Hobbit going on an adventure is unheard of! What is Gandalf thinking?!"
"Gods, you're not even Dwarven yet you're so stubborn."
"I was raised by them though," Stated Rogue.
Nessa sighed. She hated arguing or anything along those lines. "All the more reason we need anybody we can get to help Thorin and his people."
Rogue grunted in frustration, knowing Nessa was talking perfect sense.
After a few moments passed Nessa spoke up.
"So, is he hot?"
"Who?"
"Thorin..."
Rogue came to a stop. They swivelled around to face Nessa, and glared at her, arms crossed.
"I'm just asking the important question here,"
"The important question here is where on Earth are we?!" Rogue held their map, vigorously turning it and inspecting it from different angles. The next couple of hours drained on. Their map reading skills were not up to measure, clearly. Nonetheless, they had finally reached a market in Bag-End. A very busy one.
"Where are we supposed to find Bilbo now?" Nessa spoke her thoughts aloud.
"Bilbo Baggins?" A fellow Hobbit asked, having overheard.
"Yes, we are looking for him. Do you know where he might be?"
"You're in the right place. He's just over there." The Hobbit pointed to another Hobbit before walking off. The Hobbit in question was further away from them. He anxiously stalked the market, stopping shortly at a stall. It seemed he was waiting for someone, as he glanced at the letter in his hand and back up, skimming the crowd.
"Well, that was easy." They said, striding over with a beat in their step, they felt confident in their plan.
Before Rogue could utter a word, Nessa talked first. "Hello, Mr Baggins. It's nice to meet you." She held her hand out for him to shake, who in return, sent them a puzzled look yet shook her hand to be polite. "I'm sorry, but, do I know you?"
"In a way..." Nessa hesitated.
"Right-" He looked down at his letter and the stall of food again.
Seeing he was losing interest, Rogue noticed the letter and smugly spoke, needing to get to the point. "I suggest you stock up, it will be quite the dinner this evening."
Bilbo looked at them quizzically.
"Oh, and here, have this honey!" The pair held out a jar of pink honey. By the time Bilbo accepted the gift, they had run off, leaving a very confused Hobbit. He listened to them though and began to buy a couple of other things, thinking it'll just be them...
_______________
Truth be told Bilbo's home was a small dome-shaped hill with a circular green door, fit for any Hobbit, just as Rogue described to Nessa along the journey. Even in the dark, it looked welcoming.
Nessa and Rogue stood near the front of his house where they told Pilvi to wait for them outside.
"When do you think will be the most inconvenient time for us to show up?" Nessa mischievously asked. "I want to see him livid," She giggled. By now, they'd watched several dwarves enter Bilbo's home, waiting for the right moment.
"Hmm. Just follow my lead,"
Suddenly they heard someone near them. Someone running. "Come on Kili, you can run faster than that!" The person shouted as they ran closer as another, presumed to be Kili, ran behind him.
The two fairies jumped behind a bush, successfully hiding themselves as the two men reached Bilbo's house.
"Not fair, Fili. You started running first." Kili panted.
"Nuh-uh. I'm just fast. I've still got it," He pridefully admired his muscles causing Kili to roll his eyes.
"What was this Hobbit's name anyway? Mr Biggins?" Fili pondered.
"No no, I'm sure it was Mr Boggins, or was it Bimbo?—"
Fili shrugged and proceeded to ring the doorbell. He just wanted nice warm food and a drink of - preferably - ale.
During this, Nessa had been trying ever so hard to stifle her laugh. And it only got worse when Bilbo opened the door, an irritated look on his face remained as it did the previous times this evening a dwarf was at his door.
The pair introduced themselves as: "Fili." "And Kili."
"At your service." They said at once and bowed.
"You must be Mr. Boggins," Kili said.
"No! You can't come in, you've come to the wrong house." Bilbo tried to shut the door but Kili stopped him. "What?! Has it been cancelled?" he asked. The distraught look on Kili's face only entertained the two hiding fairies even more.
"No one told us," Fili added.
"Can-! No, nothing's been cancelled."
"That's a relief."
"Careful with these, I just had them sharpened," Kili said as he handed over a pile of weapons to Bilbo and barged inside with Fili striding behind.
Seeing the flustered expression on Bilbo's face was the last straw for Nessa - she let out a wheeze of a laugh and just before it could turn into a proper belly laugh, Rogue slapped their hand on her mouth, muffling her laughs, and the bush rustled from the movement. To which Bilbo thought he heard something outside but was ultimately distracted by Kili rubbing his boot on his furniture.
"That's my mother's glory box, can you please not do that?!"
They heard Bilbo say as Rogue gestured for Nessa to follow, quickly but quietly leaving their positions behind the bush. The two walked into the house, the door closing behind them.
"Fili, Kili, come on, give us a hand," Dwalin called for them and they followed, not noticing the fairies. If only Bilbo could do that. He turned around and thought he was going to drop the weapons and combust in rage at the sight of them - which didn't help with Nessa's giggling.
Amid their secret entrance, Rogue couldn't resist a theatrical touch. With a flourish of their hand and a raised eyebrow, Rogue delivered their line to a bemused Bilbo, "You might want to hand those weapons to me, Mr Baggins, someone is at the door,"
He staggered backwards but was able to compose himself. "No one is at the door!"
Nessa's giggling persisted, even though her hand was on her mouth. Only further aggravating the poor Hobbit.
"No, look! Someone is ringing the bell right now!"
"NO THERE'S—"
*Ring.*
Their prediction rang true. Rogue smirked at Bilbo's face, seeing him turn red, as he angrily threw the weapons into Rogue's arms and stormed off to answer the door. They swore they could see steam flaring out of his ears for a second.
"How rude," Rogue remarked and Nessa stifled another giggle, impressed by her sister's flair for the dramatic. They revelled in the lightheartedness of the moment, eager for the adventure that lay ahead and the camaraderie they would forge on this grand quest.
After moving aside, Rogue placed the weapons carefully on the floor out of the way, unlike Bilbo. They took a moment to gather their composure, knowing that their true purpose would soon be revealed. The anticipation of the adventure ahead mingled with the amusement of this unexpected start, creating a sense of belonging that hinted at the bonds they would forge on this daring quest to reclaim Erebor.
Peeking around the corner, they saw the door swing open and a bunch of dwarves fall into a heap on the floor, on top of each other, earning another laugh from Nessa. Even Rogue sniggered.
A grey wizard peered into the house behind the dwarves. Gandalf. With no time for Rogue to grab Nessa, dart behind a wall, and pretend they didn't see each other, he and Nessa had already locked eyes, and he sent her a complicated look - a mix of perplexity and suspicion. Nessa felt a flicker of uncertainty. The renowned wizard's sharp eyes seemed to search for hidden truths. However, he turned his attention back to Bilbo and the clumsy mound of dwarves, allowing Nessa and Rogue a moment of relief.
_________________
Whilst all the dwarves were grabbing and snatching different foods from cheeses, bread, meats - and not to mention alcohol - Nessa and Rogue respectfully stood aside marvelling at the chaos unfolding in front of them with nothing but a plate of food and a teacup ale each, classy yet down-to-party, reflecting a sense of poise amidst the merriment.
Sipping wine occasionally, Nessa took pleasure in the jovial disarray of the dwarves ransacking Bilbo's pantry before their eyes. Sometimes, when she could get ahold of food she added it to her plate. The variety of foods showcased the cultural richness of the different lands they were from, a testament to the uniqueness that comprised the company. As they nibbled on their golden toast doused in the pink citrusy honey they gifted Bilbo, Rogue on the other hand had their watchful eye make sure they were always out of Gandalf's line of vision, wanting to be discreet, avoiding him at least until the meeting.
When it came to the song the dwarves began to sing as they cleared the dishes - 'blunt the knives, bend the forks' - Nessa's enthusiastic clapping and Rogue's polite applause blended harmoniously with the dwarves' spirited song, filling the room with a sense of companionship. This all reminded them of the few comforts of home they so missed, one of them more than the other.
Sensing someone new, Rogue urged Nessa to quieten down right as the doorbell rang for the last time that night. A silence replenished the room momentarily.
"He is here," Gandalf declared.
Rogue passed Nessa a glass of wine. "Shit's getting serious?" Nessa joked to her sister.
"I'd say so. Besides, this is the last good wine we'll have in quite some time, we need this."
Nessa nodded and gulped wine, the bitter but sweet flavour lingered on her tongue as she savoured it. Going in for another taste, she nearly choked. A noble, slightly taller looking dwarf with long dark wavy hair, framed perfectly with a couple of white strands, entered. Everything about him - from the dramatic way his arrival was announced, to his demeanour - oozed authority. Even the warm smile he gave the dwarves, she found attractive. He must have been Thorin Oakenshield. King of Durin's Folk. And...
"...The leader of our company, Thorin Oakenshield." Gandalf introduced Thorin to Bilbo.
Thorin's smile turned stern when he noticed Nessa and Rogue yet he kept quiet. Instead, he joined everyone at the table. Nessa quickly took off to the kitchen and diligently prepared soup using some leftovers, hoping to extend a gesture of goodwill and earn some favour within the company. When she presented the bowl to Thorin she offered a shy but warm smile, his hesitation was apparent, but hunger won over scepticism.
The two fairies stood behind Kili and Fili, somewhat out of the way. After eating and drinking heartily with his kin, he became serious again and undoubtedly wanted to start a conversation on the quest.
So far, all through the evening, most of the dwarves had given Nessa and Rogue wary looks. They noted that the pair were likely fairies due to Rogue's bright blue hair and Nessa's hair (although a normal dark blonde) also had pinky gold highlights in - yet they did not look entirely Fae-like. At least not of their ideas on what Fairies should look like; Rogue's hair was braided intricately suspiciously in a style reminiscent of Dwarvish craftsmanship, and Nessa's handmade dress on her chubby figure from afar could look like any mismatch of patterns found at markets sewed together. Nothing like fae fashion. And not to mention their heights - they were the same height as the dwarves! Yes, only slightly taller but they also were nowhere near as tall as elves...Last but not least, there were no fairy wings in sight! It was clear that their presence seemed out of place and raised questions about their true identity and intentions, and now, as the discussion to consult the quest approached, the lingering caution and uncertainty among the dwarves remained, leaving Nessa and Rogue acutely aware of the need to prove their worth and establish their role in this company bound for Erebor.
The dwarves all had one question in particular - what were two fairies doing at a, supposedly, private meeting of dwarves to reclaim their homeland?
"Now that you've stopped hiding from me, I'd like to know what your sister is doing here." Gandalf directed at Rogue, as he sensed the ongoing tension towards the two sisters. At this, Nessa side-eyed Rogue, sending her a searching glance for the truth.
Surely Gandalf knew she was tagging along? Nessa had assumed that's why he was there on that fateful day. Evidently, Rogue had taken the initiative to ask her to join the company, yet Gandalf's inquiry brought a different perspective to light.
"Well, I didn't inform you but I did inform the leader of this company," Rogue voiced nonchalantly.
The revelation of Rogue's secret communication with Thorin left the company in an uproar. Clamorous objections rose from the group. The dwarves exchanged incredulous glances, their trust in Thorin momentarily shaken. In the midst of the confusion, Nessa and Rogue found themselves at the centre of a storm they had unintentionally ignited. Amongst the commotion, questions upon questions flew at Thorin.
"Is this true Thorin?"
"How long have you kept this from us?!"
Rogue saw Thorin's face contorted in disbelief at their statement and said, "Yes, I have. The letter is in your front left pocket."
The room became silent. They watched Thorin reach into his pocket and pull out a letter. Gasps and murmurs of shock from the company broke the stillness. Thorin dramatically held the letter in front of him, as if it was the most precious thing in the world. Gandalf immediately snatched it. He ever so carefully unfolded it, and read it. All that was printed on it were stamps that represented Rogue, their sister and their pets. He glared at Nessa and Rogue, slamming the letter on the table, with an exasperated huff. "Fairies and their mischief,"
Gandalf's remark hung heavily in the air, an indication of the distinctive circumstances surrounding Nessa and Rogue's inclusion in the quest. They exchanged a glance, realising that their path forward would be even more challenging than they had anticipated, as they needed to overcome not only their own doubts but the mistrust of Thorin's company as well.
"I've personally looked that letter over from front to back and not found a single word," Balin spoke. "How on Earth could it have addressed your arrival?" Balin thought back to when Thorin first received the letter. Thorin had angrily rushed around the entire place, asking anyone and everyone if they had sent the alleged indecipherable letter to him. If it was some sort of trick. They had even hunched over the letter, inspected it using a magnifying glass, and were still met with the same four vertically placed stamps.
Rogue grabbed the letter back and showed the group. In order, they explained that each stamp in a fairy letter symbolised someone or something. They began with the first stamp - a hand holding a rose representing Pilvi, Nessa's pet. Then the second beneath it - the cat: Pip, Rogue's cat. Then at the bottom, the butterfly: Nessa and the Rose: Rogue.
With the company's reluctant understanding and acceptance, a tentative sense of unity began to form within the group.
At this, Bilbo retrieved his letter and gave it a look over again, realising the letter he also received was from the two fairies as well. Now recognising the stamps with meaning, as illustrated.
Moving on to the more important part of the evening, they finally started to discuss the quest. Balin began by asking if the dwarves of the Iron Hill would be joining - which turned out to be no - "They will not come. They say this quest is ours, and ours alone."
"You're doing a quest?" Asked Bilbo and Rogue had to use all their willpower not to face-palm, or worse, smack him.
"Bilbo, my dear fellow, let us have a little more light. Far to the East, over ranges and rivers, beyond woodlands and wastelands, lies a single solitary peak." Gandalf restated, spreading a map on the table for all to see.
"The Lonely Mountain."
"Aye, Oin has read the portents, and the portents say: it is time," Gloin expressed and Oin elaborated with, "Ravens have been seen flying back to the mountain as it was foretold. When the birds of the old return to Erebor, the reign of the beast will end." At the mention of birds, Nessa pondered to herself if Pilvi was doing alright outside, in the dark, alone, but was interrupted by Bilbo, bringing her attention back to the real problem at stake: "Uh...what beast?"
"Well, that would be a reference to Smaug the terrible, chiefest and greatest calamity of our age. Airborne fire breather, teeth like razors, claws like meat hooks, extremely fond of precious metals." Bofur clarified.
"Yes, I know what a dragon is."
Ah. A dragon...Nessa hadn't really thought about who they had to fight. Too late to back out now.
Ori who was especially eager stood up and announced: "I'm not afraid, I'm up for it. I'll give him a taste of the dwarfish iron right up his jacksy!" Rogue face-palmed for real this time while Nessa giggled.
"Good lad, Ori!"
"Sit down!" Dori grabbed his brother, reminding the two sisters of each other.
"The task would be difficult enough with an army behind us, but we number just thirteen, and not thirteen of the best, nor brightest," Balin said, feeling defeated already.
"Hey! Who are you calling dim?"
"Sorry, what did he say?"
Fili then spoke proudly, reassuring his kin. "We may be few in number. But we're fighters, all of us! To the last dwarf!"
"And you forget we have a wizard in our company, Gandalf will have killed hundreds of dragons in his time." Kili looked over at Gandalf expectantly.
"Oh, well. No, uh, I...I wouldn't say..." Gandalf spluttered over his words.
"How many then?"
"What?"
"Well, how many dragons have you killed? Go on, give us a number!" Dori insisted. The room quietened, waiting for what they hoped to be an impressive answer from Gandalf.
However, an embarrassed Gandalf started to cough on his pipe smoke making the dwarves groan and shout at one another, feeling hopeless.
Thorin abruptly rose to his feet. "Enough!" He roared. The dwarves sat back down. "If we have read these signs, do you not think others will have read them too? Rumours have begun to spread. The dragon Smaug has not been seen for sixty years. Eyes look East to the mountain, assessing, wondering, weighing the risk. Perhaps the vast wealth of our people now lies unprotected. Do we sit back while others claim what is rightfully ours? Or do we seize this chance to take back Erebor?"
Thorin was right. Rogue had heard all about this for years, and now more than ever, in recent months. Inspired by the speech, the dwarves jumped and cheered. His words struck a nerve with Nessa, who had always wondered if she should return to the abandoned fairyland.
Balin stood and raised his voice. "You forget the front gate is sealed! There is no way into the mountain."
"That, my dear Balin, is not entirely true." With a twiddle of his fingers, Gandalf produced a Dwarvish key, ornately wrought.
Thorin's eyes lit up and he looked at it in wonder. "How came you by this?" He questioned curiously.
"It was given to me by your father, by Thrain, for safekeeping. It is yours now." Gandalf handed the key to Thorin, who held it in awe. Everyone looked on in proud astonishment. Including Nessa and Rogue.
"If there's a key, there must be a door!" Fili exclaimed excitedly.
"Very astute observation," Rogue whispered sarcastically to her sister. Rogue's sarcasm had hit the mark, and Nessa burst out laughing, but in the midst of their serious discussion about the quest, Nessa's laughter seemed like an outburst at an inappropriate time. A few sent scrutinized glances her way and she quickly realised how it might be perceived and made an effort to regain her composure, all while attempting to convey that her amusement was unrelated to the quest itself.
Fili's observation, though met with humour, was indeed astute, and the company continued to brainstorm and plan their next steps, eager to unlock the way into Erebor. "These ruins speak of a hidden passage to the Lower Halls." The wizard pointed to runes on the map, ignoring the 'fairies and their mischief.'
"There's another way in," Kili noted.
"Well, if we can find it, but dwarf doors are invisible when closed. The answer lies hidden somewhere in this map...and I do not have the skill to find it. But there are others in Middle-Earth who can." Everyone looked at him, listening carefully. "The task I have in mind will require a great deal of stealth, and no small amount of courage. But, if we are careful and clever, I believe that it can be done."
"That's why we need a burglar," Ori stated.
"A good one too. An expert, I'd imagine." Bilbo added.
"And are you?" Gloin asked.
Bilbo froze, half confused, half afraid. "Am I what?"
"He said he's an expert! Hey!" Gloin cried out, optimistically, and the other dwarves cheerfully joined in. Rogue snorted...Bilbo didn't even know he was to be part of this journey beforehand and they had to travel all this way to Hobbiton for him...Just for him to mess up this badly...
Bilbo's face however was livid with shock causing the fairies to laugh again. "Me? No, no, no, I'm not a burglar. I've never stolen a thing in my life."
"I'm afraid I have to agree with Mr. Baggins. He's hardly burglar material." Balin conversed.
"Aye, the wild is no place for gentlefolk who can neither fight nor fend for themselves." Dwalin agreed.
Bilbo nodded in desperate agreement, ignoring the insult. Nonetheless, Gandalf shook his head, irritated. He stood tall, imposing the dwarves who looked on in shock. "Enough! If I say Bilbo Baggins is a burglar, then he is. Hobbits are remarkably light on their feet! In fact, they can go unseen by most if they choose. And while the dragon is accustomed to the smell of dwarf, the scent of a Hobbit is all but unknown to him which gives us a distinct advantage."
Gandalf turned to Thorin, determined to make his point. "You asked me to find another member of this company and I have chosen Mr. Baggins. There's a lot more to him than appearances suggest, and he's got a great deal to offer than any of you know, including himself. You must trust me on this."
Thorin sighed and for a moment scanned the room, weighing the outcome. "What about those two?" He nodded over at Nessa and Rogue, all eyes on them.
Nessa waved slightly but Rogue smacked her hand. "As for them, well, Rogue is remarkably agile and has a talent in magic - fae magic in particular - and that I do know to be very rare these days, so we are lucky to have them on this quest. Their sister, Nessa, on the other hand-" he wavered to continue so Rogue cut in. "-Is exceptionally talented with her axe," - Rogue grabbed at the pink axe that was attached to Nessa's belt at the back that just peered over the top of her head and showed the company - "and, I assure you, she is not afraid to use it."
"We are descendants of the Fallen Fae and I know what it is like to lose your home, so please, we would like to contribute to this quest." Nessa pleaded.
Thorin regarded Nessa with a newfound understanding, her words resonating with the struggles and losses he had faced as a leader seeking to reclaim his homeland. Growing up, Thorin had heard of the Fallen Fae, of their tragedy. From this moment forward he promised himself he would hold the sisters in high regard. If they could prove their worth, that is.
"Very well. Your dedication to the cause is duly noted. We shall need all the skills we can muster." He settled. "Give them our contract."
A sense of relief washed over them. Nessa's heart soared with gratitude, and Rogue offered a respectful nod.
Balin handed a scrolled contract to Bilbo to which Thorin grabbed and shoved it at him, who unrolled the scroll, which nearly reached the floor. Balin began explaining that the contract was a summary of out-of-pocket expenses, including... "Funeral arrangements?" Bilbo queried after looking at the contract reluctantly.
Bilbo, now intensely reading it, was growing more and more distressed with each new word he spoke, "...Present company shall not be liable for injuries inflicted by or sustained as a consequence thereof, including, but not limited to - lacerations? Evisceration? Incineration?"
"Oh, aye, he'll melt the flesh off your bones in the blink of an eye." Bofur teased.
A white sheet of paleness covered his complexion. Bilbo seemed breathless and unwell. His grip on the contract tightened nervously, needing something to hold onto, as he grabbed a hand to his chest.
"You alright, laddie?" Balin asked, worriedly glancing at Bilbo.
"Huh? Yeah, I feel...I feel a bit faint."
"Think furnace, with wings," Bofur egged on.
"I...I...I need air."
"Flash of light, searing pain, then poof! You're nothing more than a pile of ash!" Bofur continued, much to the situation. The vivid descriptions of potential injuries were enough to make anyone apprehensive, and the jests from the dwarves only exacerbated his anxiety. So much so that he managed to let out a pained "No-" before fainting, falling to the floor.
"Oh, very helpful, Bofur." Gandalf sarcastically said.
Rogue walked up to the unconscious Bilbo and poked him with their boot. When they confirmed he was out like a light they pried the contract from his grip. Nessa brought out two large stamps for them each from her bag. They skipped to the last page where the spaces for their signatures were and raised their stamps to print. Having not realised how loud the stamps would be when they collided with the paper with an audible thump, everyone jumped. Additional disapproved glances were sent their way though the dwarves tried to trust their leader, Thorin's, decision to accept them.
"Not going to read the terms and conditions?" Fili asked them.
"I mean, Bilbo here just read it for us before he...fainted...but It's not like we have anything to lose."
Rogue said indifferently when a ginger kitten poked his head out of their pocket and meowed softly. "Isn't that right, Pip?"
Excitement grew amongst the company with the upcoming quest ready to commence and now with the added addition of a cat, the companionship was prospering already. The tiny feline seemed to captivate the attention of the dwarves, melting hearts and creating a brief respite from the otherwise serious discussion.
Thorin of course wanted to send scrutiny, though he couldn't help but crack a smile at his happy kin, welcoming and recognising that bonds were forming that would be crucial on their journey to reclaim Erebor.
_______________________
Thorin stood by the fireplace, pipe smoke in hand. The golden glow from the fire lit up his face revealing the stoic expression that was still present as he was in deep thought. The crackling fire was unexpectedly interrupted as he began singing.
Far over the misty mountains cold.
One by one each dwarves began joining in, following Thorin's lead.
To dungeons deep and caverns old.
We must away, ere break of day.
To find our long-forgotten gold...
Their deep voices hummed and gently sang heartfelt and deeply meaningful lyrics together, harmonising perfectly. Their pain and sorrow filled the now atmospheric room, and Nessa, who stood to the side solemnly with her sister, wiped a tear away from her cheek she didn't know was there. This hit close to home. She understood their pain. Their burdens. Their losses. She knew what it was like having no home. Forgotten gold for her was her heritage which, over the years, had been slipping away from her. If only they could truly see that. See they cared. She hoped to prove this. They did have a whole quest to fulfil together after all.

Thorin sighed as he stood in front of his full length dress mirror. He was sure that another grey hair had appeared overnight. It shone silver as it wove through his braid. Each hair was a reminder of all those years that he was ahead of you. But nothing could stop his heart wanting you as much as it did. By human years you were in your prime of life, at your peak. Thorin felt as though he was now deflated, crumbling away as he approached his second century. Surely if he had met you all those years ago when he was young, and his hair was black and his skin free of blemish, you would have fallen for him. The scars which littered his body acted as a map of all the wars he had participated in. Each blemish was a sign of his experience. Your skin was still unmarked, unbroken. So much innocence.
That evening would be your weekly dinner with Thorin, the rest of his court advisers and Dis. Since being part of the King's Company only a few months prior, Thorin had made sure you now had a home, security and position. You remembered your first day at council, all eyes were on you. No one of the race of Men had ever taken a seat on Dwarf council. However, as time passed, you had gradually found your place. Dwalin and Balin had welcomed you immediately, having been two of your traveling companions.
In your bedchamber and you began pushing through the clothing which hung in your wardrobe. Dresses, tunics, shawls, cloaks, robes. One dress sat at the end of the line of clothing: it was the dress that Thorin had gifted you upon moving into your bedchamber. It was deep, midnight blue. Dresses always made you feel insecure, as if unwanted attention would be drawn to you and mockery would be shown. And this one had been no exception, until now. You picked it up and draped it over your arm. Something hit you, a revelation... it was the same colour that Thorin always wore. Had this been a simple coincidence? Probably. You highly doubted that Thorin would have thought that deeply into such a thing as this.
With a sigh, you shifted away and began to dress for the occasion.
Thorin was first in the hall, sitting at the head of the table. And gradually everyone began to appear, filling up the seats around the long table. Wine and ale was on hand, plenty to keep everyone merry.
You sat at the far end of the table, next to Balin. First off, you placed a napkin into your lap, preparing for the meal. Then you looked up and noticed Thorin glancing at his own reflection in a goblet. Why did he do this so often? Was he becoming vain?
Thorin sighed and looked over toward you, noticing that you had your gaze in your lap. But his heart hammered in anxiety and delight at the sight of you wearing the dress. It looked just as he had imagined; it was a snug fit and showed off your curves beautifully.
Balin smirked to himself as he noticed Thorin watching you. It had become known within the main circle of advisers that Thorin had his eye on you. However, you remained oblivious to the fact.
The evening went as it normally did: eating, drinking and plenty of chatter.
You noticed that Dis kept whispering to Thorin, nudging him. But his face would then contort and grow angry, until finally he hissed something at her and she crossed her arms in frustration. "I think you take the stubbornness of Dwarves to a whole new level!" Dis exclaimed.
"Enough!" Thorin bellowed.
Everyone stared for a second at the King and his sister, then shifted their nervous gazes elsewhere.
"Umm, we'll begin taking our plates to the kitchens," you proposed, feeling awkward. The rest of the table, apart from Thorin and Dis, muttered in agreement and grabbed their plates and cutlery, hurrying to the kitchen, which was just out of the hall.
Thorin and Dis remained sat down, almost side by side.
"Thorin, I'm being serious, you need to tell her," Dis said, her voice soft but firm. "You've given everything for this kingdom, for our people. You deserve some happiness. I see the way you look at each other."
"Dis!" Thorin warned.
"You think the fact you're older than her makes a difference. It doesn't."
"Look at me!" Thorin exclaimed. "I'm an old man. What kind of woman would want..."
"She would," Dis replied. "Trust me. You've got nothing to lose here, Thorin, and everything to gain. Just talk to her."
Thorin sighed and smiled weakly at Dis. "I shall."
As the guests of Thorin's dinner began to disperse, he called you back. "Can I talk with you privately?" he asked.
Dis smiled to herself and winked at Thorin as she disappeared out of the main double doors.
"Of course," you said. You sat down at the table where Dis had been sat. "You look worried. What's bothering you?" The set of his face seemed to be that of anguish. Did this relate to his outburst earlier?
Thorin blinked hard and looked down at the table.
You reached across and took his hand. "You've put your faith and trust in me this far, please do not stop now."
"I..." Thorin began, his silver blue eyes locked with your gaze. "I love you."
You gasped, unable to hold back your shock at this. "You...you..."
"I love you," he said again. "But I'm old, and while I know my sister means well, she doesn't see the years on my face that I do. Every time I look in the mirror, I see one more white hair. My body is littered with scars. I should not be yearning for you the way I do...."
You gripped his hand tighter, your thumb caressing his. "You're not old. You're the most beautiful man I've ever seen."
"What?"
You smiled as you saw his eyes widen in shock. "I mean it. You are. You might be older than me, Thorin, but I never see your age. I just see a beautiful man who I would never have any chance with."
Thorin chuckled. "You're very wrong in your estimation of chances."
You brushed your hand through his long locks, still smiling as you did so. "These white hairs just add to how handsome you are, you know?"
"You are trying to flatter me now..."
"No, I'm speaking the truth. I'd never speak anything but truth to you. I've seen you look at your own reflection so many times, and I kept wondering if you were growing vain."
Both of you couldn't help but laugh.
Thorin cupped your cheek with his hand. "It felt like with each new white hair you were growing further and further away from me."
"Never," you whispered, and leaned in for a kiss.

Beans’ Bagginshield Recs
Here it is! My first rec list eight years since I first started shipping Bagginshield. When this lockdown started (and ended and started again) I found myself re-reading OG/classics and discovering new ones. Sifting through my AO3 history I realized I have read and already forgotten so much fic over the years. For a while, I though the ship had run its course but as we can see now, Bagginshield lives! Check back for updates as I discover (and remember) more fics. Pay attention to the tags and trigger warnings!
AU
I Sang In My Chains Like The Sea by orphan_account for lincesque, IronPanda
In which Bilbo is a Jaeger pilot candidate, and Middle Earth stands on the brink of destruction. (Pacific Rim AU) [Wasn’t sure how this one worked but man it did]
At the Turn of the Year by northerntrash
They say that strange things live in the woods, fair folk and things more spirit than man; don't step between the old oaks, parents mutter to their children, or they might find you, and eat you. Thorin never believed that, but now winter is settling into his bones, the shadows are growing longer through the hoar frost, and he is lost among the trees.
And it was there that Thorin met him, that strange, laughing creature, walking barefoot through the bracken.
Canon-ish
Homeward Bound by perkynurples for 61Below
His life slips away from him on an elven boat carrying him overseas, and there is one last journey Bilbo Baggins must take if he truly means to arrive home.
Sansûkh by determamfidd
The battle was over, and Thorin Oakenshield awoke, naked and shivering, in the Halls of his Ancestors.
The novelty of being dead fades quickly, and watching over his companions soon fills him with grief and guilt. Oddly, a faint flicker of hope arises in the form of his youngest kinsman, a Dwarf of Durin's line with bright red hair.
(Follows the story of the War of the Ring).
The Great Shire Conspiracy by Avelera for Emsiecat
Ten years later, Bilbo can't even go to the Green Dragon without a dwarven tourist buying him a beer and sobbing over Bilbo's great tragic love affair with Thorin Oakenshield. Which would all be quite touching and heartbreaking, if not for one little thing...
Dark (generally not a fan but this one made the cut)
Pain-Bearer by lilithiumwords (unfinished)
In an alternate reality, Erebor was never taken by Smaug, and the War of Dwarves and Orcs never happened. The Orcs invaded the Shire, slaughtering hundreds and taking countless more as slaves. Bilbo is slave to Azog, the Dwarf King's mortal enemy... until the Dwarf King rescues him.
Dwarves! in the Shire
Selling to Hobbits by HildyJ
Exiled from his kingdom and living on the mercy of others, Thorin is determined to make his own way in the world for him and his family. And the annual Summer Fair in Hobbiton sounds like the best place to sell enough of his crafted goods to do just that.
Oak and Mistletoe by HildyJ (series)
After a life dominated by a strange form of sickness, Thorin is sent to the Shire to seek a cure only Bilbo Baggins can offer.
Erebor - Nope, Never Fell
A Most Sensible Idea by HildyJ
Bilbo Baggins isn't sure about this. Not one bit.
Frodo is definitely too young to enter into an arranged marriage with a dwarven king called Thorin Oakenshield. It's a good thing that Bilbo is there to chaperone him through their courtship.
After all, there's no chance that a fussy hobbit bachelor would ever catch the eye of a king.
Signs and Meanings by HildyJ
It shouldn't matter to Thorin that the visiting hobbit cook doesn't speak his language. But it does.
Per Aspera by northerntrash
Deep in the dungeons of the Kingdom of Erebor, in an old, unused storeroom, lived a Hobbit.
In which Bilbo Baggins, a strangely successful thief, makes a mistake, and meets a Prince.
Erebor - Rebuilding
Mother-Tongue by northerntrash for HildyJ
Forget-me-not: a small flower, with four petals, which are normally found in shades of blue with a pink or white centre. These are traditional flowers of intent in the Shire, used to express true love, and remembrance.
In which Bilbo plans to leave Erebor, and Thorin tries to understand why.
Previous Engagements by Lunarflare14
After the Battle of Five Armies Thorin and Company have a new task: rebuilding their reclaimed home. Suddenly Bilbo finds himself up to his ears in responsibility and he surprises himself with how well he can navigate negotiations with elf dignitaries, farmers in Dale, and a dwarf king who has patience for neither.
But as Spring approaches a caravan from the Blue mountains brings something everyone had nearly forgotten: the dwarf woman Thorin promised his hand to many years ago.
Which is fine. It's all fine. It wasn't like Bilbo was falling in love with the king or anything.
That would be tragic.
And I'm Your Lionheart by Lee_Whimsy
Bilbo lingers in Erebor while Thorin recovers from his wounds, and soon finds himself caught up in politics, romance, and the occasional kidnapping. Ensemble cast. AU. Eventually Thorin/Bilbo.
Fix-Its (Gawd we need them)
An Expected Journey by MarieJacquelyn
For years Bilbo has written about his adventures and told stories about his dealings with dwarves and dragons. To most it seemed like fanciful nonsense but to Bilbo it was all very real. A weight followed him home from his travels, one called regret. Now in his final moments Bilbo has a choice to make – go quietly into death’s embrace or go back again and face all the fear and pain for the chance to make things right?
Of course, change is a fickle thing and not everything can be done again as Bilbo is about to find out. In the end, it may not only be salvation that he’s fighting for.

Over Your Shoulder by northerntrash
The battle is over, and the lost have been counted. There is too much death, too much blood, and in the middle of it sits one small Hobbit, left quite alone but for a body on the ground and the memory of what might have been. But he is a tenacious creature, and if there is one thing that he has learnt, it is not to give up hope.
In which Bilbo Baggins goes on one last journey, and doesn't come back alone.
Historical Setting
The Ghost And Mr Baggins by perkynurples
They say that everything can be cured by saltwater - sweat, tears or the sea. Bilbo Baggins chooses the last option, taking his recently orphaned nephew and moving to the charming Oak Cottage, overlooking England’s grislier shores. The house charms him instantly, and though he knows nothing at all about the sea, or about making ends meet on his own so far from everything he’s known his whole life for that matter, he’s quite determined to stay, and see his nephew get better, odd sounds in the night be damned. He’s living in a modern world, after all, and the nonsense he’s been hearing about the house being haunted by its former owner, the mysterious Captain Durin, is just silly superstition… isn’t it?
Hobbit! Thorin
I've Grown a Hedge Around My Heart by pibroch (littleblackdog)
Thorin Brandybuck, just recently come of age, still lives in his family’s smial in Buckland, with his parents and two younger siblings. Thorin is an odd duck amongst his relations and neighbours-- unsociable, grumpy, shy, and awkward. And beyond that, he looks rather strange even for a Bucklander, strongly favouring the thick, dark haired build of his Stoorish blood.
It defies all sense and reason why Bilbo Baggins, an exemplar of all the respectable traits Thorin lacked, would ever desire a friendship with him.
Bilbo, as Thorin discovers, is not always as sensible as he appears.
Marriage (or something like it)
An Unexpected Proposal by Eareniel
As Bilbo sat smoking in his empty hobbit hole, he couldn’t help but wonder – when did his life become so boring? Or better yet – when did his old life stop being enough?
He suspected the answer to that question lay somewhere around the time when he had refused Thorin Oakenshield’s offer of marriage.
Something Blue by Lapin
Thorin marries Bilbo after the Battle of Five Armies, a marriage of convenience, not love. Slowly, they must come to make the best of it, Bilbo resolves. After all, he's a Hobbit. They make the best of things.
Magical/Super Powers
On Adventures and Other Forms of Conduct Unbecoming of a Wizard by manic_intent for beingevil
For as long as even the old Gaffer could remember there had been a wizard living in the hill at Bag End, overlooking the Shire. As wizards went, this one wasn't the wandering sort, always out to lure gentle folk out onto nasty adventures, or even the powerful kind, the sort that lived in high towers, reaching out into the ways of the world.
Modern Setting
Old Stone, New Fires by northerntrash
Bilbo was not sure what he had expected when he had agreed to supervise the restoration of Erebor House, on the lonely tidal island in the North sea, but it was not this. The winters up here are cold and harsh, and there is a strange feeling on the air, thick with the brine of the sea and secrets to which he is not privy; there is some part of the long and troubled history of the place that has not been spoken of, a shadow between the broken family gravestones and the caves beneath the cliffs, dark and dangerous.
Perhaps it is all in Bilbo’s mind, but as the nights grow longer, he starts to doubt it, and as Thorin sinks ever deeper into black and incalculable moods, he will have to find what has been lost, before it takes them all.
For This by northerntrash
Thorin Durin had lived in his new flat for approximately eighty four minutes when things started to go terribly, terribly wrong. The wrongness came in the form of a package, delivered to his door, wrapped in brown paper and string, with a small tag wishing him a very sincere welcome to the building.
Nothing Gold Can Stay by perkynurples
Bilbo Baggins led a rather peaceful life, thank you very much, until an old acquaintance decided to turn it upside down, and he found himself agreeing to take a job that’s… let’s say not exactly up his alley, and might eventually cost him a little more than his treasured cozy lifestyle. Who would have thought tutoring a slightly menacing monarch’s more than slightly overbearing nephew could prove to be such an adventure?
Love-In-Idleness by perkynurples
Taking Bilbo Baggins, a successful movie actor who is only just getting used to the perks and intricacies of becoming A Face People Want To See, and putting him together with Thorin Oakenshield, with his very traditional (read: slightly backwards) ideas about what constitutes Real Art and Real Talent, might very well be viewed as just some clothead’s idea of a joke. But there are jokes, and then there are carefully calculated risks the size of controversial reproductions of classic Shakespearean plays - for Bilbo, it is the chance of a lifetime to prove himself to all those who have ever deemed him too one-dimensional to even attempt stage, while Thorin has the opportunity to get out of the rut that’s been hindering his career for so long now, and shine in a role worthy of his talent once again. That is if the two learn how to share the same space for more than ten minutes without wanting to tear each other’s hair out. The course of true love never did run smooth, after all…
If There Were Water by stickman
Bilbo Baggins might be in over his head. He’s purchased an old stone house atop a hill overlooking a city he doesn’t know, and plans to live quietly, largely ignoring the rest of the world. But it’s early April, the rainy season, and the roof leaks, and there's something strange about Bywater House that he can't quite figure out.
Thorin Oakenshield is in his fourth month of trying to reconcile his own grief with his failures at anything remotely resembling a competent single parent, living out of a shoebox flat with Fíli (seven, sullen, and stubborn as hell) and Kíli (five, resilient but cracking), working crap jobs and hating everything including himself.
Under the cover of rainy afternoons and sleepless nights, roof repairs and building restoration, Bilbo and Thorin try to figure out how one navigates isolation, and how one breaks out of it. Every step they manage to take forward finds them dragged back again; every question asked has too many answers, or too few. This is a story about living in a world where everyone is on their own, always, and how things go on.
How the West Was Won and Where It Got Us by stickman
Bilbo is a harried 1st year British literature Ph.D. (early 20th century fiction) who happens to have an interest in spatial narrative structures, a lack of time-management skills, and a tiny apartment with a lot of books and very little furniture. He’s stressed, always, and doesn't quite know where he belongs. He tells himself that really, this is, in fact, what he wants to be doing. But sometimes, as much as he loves books, he gets an urge to do something with his hands.
Thorin is a disgruntled M.Arch. 1 in his last year who can’t be arsed to shave and frightens his students, and, frankly, his profs, but his work is top-notch so no one can really say much. They can, however, bully him into running a hands-on design workshop on Saturday mornings, which is complete crap, because he’s used to drinking his Friday nights into oblivion so showing up at Milstein at 7:45 the next morning and trying to teach in a room of wall-to-wall windows as the sun rises is not at the top of his list. Besides, no one ever shows up.
Except one morning, someone does.
The Boy You Met (At The Coin Laundry) by Lee_Whimsy
Bilbo accidentally spends a summer in Ireland. One rainy day, Thorin appears in the hotel laundry room, naked and dripping wet and about to propose. (But not, unfortunately, to Bilbo.)
Gandalf, Thranduil, and a handful of Spanish footballers all guest-star.
Hooked On You by Chamelaucium
Thorin should have learnt not to trust his brother and sister by now.
Come with us on holiday, they’d said. It’ll be fun, they’d said. A nice break from work.
Yeah right. All this holiday had brought him was being knocked around the head, acute hay-fever, and the biggest, most ridiculous crush ever on the cute, golden-haired fishing instructor.
One-Sided Conversations by northerntrash
"Thank you for listening," Thorin said, getting to his feet. "I hope to be able to return the favour, one day."
The man on the bed didn't respond, but since he'd been in a coma for longer than Thorin had known him, that wasn't entirely surprising.
“One”/Soulmates
you lick your lips (you taste like years of being alone) by perkynurples for stopchasingflowers
Thorin Oakenshield was born without the longing, and has spent his whole life merely observing others as they pursued a feeling unknown to him until they finally found their One. He has made his peace with the prospect of being alone, and has been faring well enough, but little does he know the fates have a different story in store for him.
Things We Grow Together by serenbach
Dwarves are born with a bone-deep knowledge of their One, but Thorin stops feeling the pull of his after the dragon attacks Erebor. Needless to say, he is surprised, and not initially pleased, to find his One living behind a round green door decades later.
Hobbits find a seed that represents their innermost self and can offer it to someone else to plant. This creates a bond as strong as deep roots in the earth between them. It is just like Bilbo, after years of thinking that no one would want his, to offer his soul-seed to a dwarf that does not understand gardening metaphors.
But just because they have found each other does not make the quest to reclaim Erebor any easier, and in the end a sacrifice is still made.
Thorin has to trust in the strength of the bond between himself and his One, because otherwise he will never believe that the sacrifice was worth it.
Colour-struck by northerntrash
Soul mates are like adventures, Bilbo had often consoled himself. Nasty, disturbing, uncomfortable things that made you late for dinner. It was no great hardship that he had never met his, even if he couldn't tell which of his petunias were blue and which were purple.

Thorin Oakenshield's Majestic Diary by Fruitsie
Thorin Oakenshield, King Under the Mountain and Totally Majestic Badass of Middle Earth, does not have a raging hard-on for Bilbo Baggins.
No, seriously.
Just read his diary.

In which the Company are entirely too nosy about matters that are supposed to be a secret, and Bilbo learns that being concerned about propriety is overrated when you could be making friends instead.

Just to See You Happy- Frodo Time Travel Fix-It; Frodo has carried the Ring and deserves as much rest as any mortal can bear. He refuses to see his mission as complete until Bilbo finds his happiness. When Valinor does not hold the answer he needs, he launches himself into the past into an adventure that doesn't belong to him all in the hope of finding Bilbo's happiness.
Soul Traitor- Reincarnation Soulmate AU; Betrayal among soulmates is unheard of in all the free races of Arda, yet that’s exactly what Durin VI, King of Khazad-dûm, endures. Heartsick and angry, he damns the Valar for their choice and earns their wrath in return. He and his former love will be reincarnated until the wrong between them is righted. Thorin Oakenshield, Durin’s lastest reincarnation, believes nothing can break that curse but for the Arkenstone that was stolen so many years ago. Gandalf, the meddlesome wizard, offers a hobbit translator for their quest. Yet, this hobbit may be the key to uncovering more than just a gem. An ugly truth that has remained hidden in the misdeeds and lost words of the past, about to be unlocked and free Thorin and Bilbo from this seemingly never ending cycle.
A Mother's Curse- Reverse Werewolf AU; A mistake made during the Fell Winter has turned Bilbo into a werewolf. Having always wondered if there was a way to reverse his curse, Gandalf believes he has found the answer. And it will require Bilbo to travel with a company of thirteen dwarves determined to take back their homeland from a dragon.

the hobbit: “the fear of rejection” ₊˚ ⸝  thorin x reader
Tumblr media
❝no, you don't think of me like how i think about you. and it sucks, the way things change so fast.. it sucks, and it hurts so bad.❞
gif credit: n/a song: princessbri - i hate that i can only write music about u
˚₊· ͟͟͞͞➳❥
pairings: thorin oakenshield x reader
warnings: angst, violence
summary: not much of a summary but more of an a/n? anyway, i’ve read a lot of fan-fics where thorin is the one always avoiding the reader because he’s insecure and unsure of the reader’s feelings. i thought i’d turn the tables for this oneshot. (also this is kinda the situation with this guy i’m crushing on so---)
“So, Y/N, when are you finally going to confess your undying love for our uncle?”
You groan at the sound of Kili’s teasing as he jogs up beside you, along with his older brother, Fili. You ignore them and walk faster, your cheeks burning red.
“Aw, c’mon, Ki! She’s shy! Leave the poor girl alone!”
“I’m not shy, I’m just..” you sigh and look at the ground as you trail behind the rest of The Company. “It’s not that simple.” Kili & Fili exchange a look, knowing this was going to become serious.
“You’re afraid, aren’t you, Y/N? Afraid of Thorin pushing you away?”
You solemnly nod, avoiding the brothers’ sad smile.
“Oh, Y/N, it’ll be okay. You know it’s not good to keep your feelings bottled up.” Fili pats you on your shoulder, “We know our uncle. He wouldn’t think any less of you for taking a liking to him.”
You frown. “I know that.. But if he rejects my feelings.. Well, I don’t know how I’d handle it.” You space out, the thought of The Company mocking and teasing you in your mind. They’d never let you live it down, that’s for sure. Just as Kili was about to speak, Thorin’s booming voice stopped him.
“Fili! Kili! Catch up!”
The brothers sent you a final look before keeping up their pace, catching up with the rest of The Company.
“You too, Y/N,” Thorin commanded, his piercing blue eyes never leaving yours. His stare was harsh, causing shivers to run across your whole body. You felt yourself sink under his cold gaze.
There was no way you could confess to him.
Tumblr media
That day, you kept your distance from Thorin. And the day after.
Days turned into weeks and you haven’t spoken to Thorin at all. If it was something serious concerning the journey, you would turn to Gandalf about it instead of Thorin.
Thorin was quick to catch on. He suspected you were avoiding him on purpose. But why? You’d grown close to Thorin over the journey, so why would you suddenly ignore him?
He was soon to find out.
One night, The Company, drained and exhausted from the traveling, headed to sleep early. You offered to take the first watch as they all rested quietly, save for Bombur’s loud snores.
You too, found yourself drifting off to sleep, but the sound of a branch snapping shook you awake. You jumped to your feet and spun around, scanning the woods surrounding the camp.
You caught the glimpse of something rustling between the bushes. Maybe an animal. You whipped your dagger out of its’ sheath and cautiously approached the sound, stepping in the dark woods where the light of the fire did not touch.
You walked around for a good five minutes, checking between every bush or where you thought the sound came from.
“I’m just being paranoid..” You whispered to yourself, rubbing your eyes. “Bifur should be taking the next watch.” Just as you were about to walk back towards the camp, a rough hand pulled you back, causing you to lose your balance and fall onto the ground.
You couldn’t see through the dark very well, but judging by the animalistic growls and smell, you knew you were being ambushed by an Orc. Maybe several.
Just as you let that sink in, you instinctively reached for your dagger. You pulled it out of its’ sheath, only for it to be kicked out of your hand.
The Orc towering above you kept your arm down with its’ boots as it bent down, its’ rotten breath fanning your face. You struggled to get back onto your feet, but another Orc by your side held you down and placed its’ slimy hand on your mouth, keeping you silent.
The two Orcs yelled at each other in Blackspeech. You couldn’t understand what they were saying, but after an exchange, they looked down at you, a malicious grin on their faces.
Oh, you were so dead.
The first Orc unsheathed its’ blade, pointing it to your neck.
The Orc raised its’ blade in the air, ready to take your head off, when it was suddenly tackled to the ground by an unseen person.
The other Orc by your side was caught off guard, and you took that chance to grab your dagger, get to your feet and kill it.
Just as you finished, a familiar voice, that both scared you and comforted you called out.
“Y/N! What were you doing? You almost got yourself killed!”
Judging by Thorin’s voice, you knew he was furious. But his demeanor softened when he saw the terrified look your face. He said a curse in Khuzdul under his breath and lead you back to the camp where he could get a better look at you.
“Did they hurt you? Are you wounded?” He inspected you from head to toe, looking for any wounds or blood. But you quickly backed away from Thorin.
“No, no, no, I’m fine, I’m not hurt,” you reassured him. “I-” Your words got caught in your throat as you locked eyes with Thorin. He approached you, but this time held you in place before you could avoid him this time.
“Why are you so nervous around me, Y/N?” You broke eye contact, looking down, away from Thorin. “Do I scare you? Tell me, Y/N. It hurts me to know you want to distance yourself from me.”
“Thanu-men,” you whispered. [my king]
“You may address me by my name, Y/N. It’s just the two of us.”
“I.. You misunderstand..” Thorin raises an eyebrow. You continue, “I have been feeling unwell and it wasn’t my intention to avoid you..”
“Do not lie to me, Y/N. I’m not easy to fool.”
You stay silent after that, still refusing to make eye contact with Thorin.
“.. Is there something you’ve been meaning to tell me?”
Your heart skips a beat.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about..”
“Then are you telling me my nephews have been lying to me?”
Damn it, Fili & Kili.
You feel Thorin’s hand tug at your chin, forcing you to look up at him.
“All this time, Fili & Kili have been telling me about your feelings for me.”
“I-”
“I didn’t believe it at first.. And I still don’t. So I want you to tell me, Y/N,” Thorin says lowly into your ears. “Tell me it’s true.”
Your face is now inches away from Thorin’s, your noses nearly brushing up against each other. You feel his heated breath fan your face and neck, causing your heart to flutter. You suck in a breath.
This was your chance.
Hesitantly, you cupped Thorin’s face. By the look of his eyes, he was taken back.
Without giving him the chance to properly react, you pressed your lips to his. He was quick to kiss you back, snaking his arms around your small form to deepen the kiss.
You broke away briefly to get a look at Thorin’s face. His expression said nothing but happiness, his eyes filled with light and joy, and his cheek red with blush.
You giggled lightly and pulled Thorin closer to pepper kisses all over his face, his nose, his forehead, and the top of his head.
You felt him hum in satisfaction.
“So, does that mean yes?”

For A Better Future
read it on the AO3 at https://ift.tt/uQ3PhNg
by BrookeSullivan31
A modern girl is transported into Tolkiens world at the start of The Hobbit after she dies. She was an avid Tolkien fan during her life and using her knowledge she is determined to help Bilbo and the Dwarves get a better future. She just needs to figure out the language difference and regain her health while she does so. As she continues on her journey she decides she's not just going to change the ending of The Hobbit but try and lay the groundwork for a better ending The Lord of the Rings as well.
This is my first ever fanfic, and really my first ever serious attempt at writing. My plan is for this to be a really long fic with a lot of moments between characters as they travel.
