Saint Valentine

You watch as your Word Bearer, Aziel, and his group go down to the basement for their regular ritual. Little did you know they were planning to summon someone to ask for some odd advice.

God love him, Aziel is very helpful and loyal (daresay a somewhat like a dog), and is a wonderful hype-man, but sometimes he can get a bit absurd and uncomfortably zealous about it. Not to mention him trying to convert you to believing the Four, whoever they are. You’re not particularly religious, but you’re of the opinion people can believe whatever they want to so as long as it doesn’t hurt others. You can take only so much chatter of worship of you and his gods after all. It got to the point you had to tell him to cut down the words of praise and worship lest you think he is being insincere. He was rather insulted by the fact that you questioned his sincerity for you, but he made an effort to not do that as much. His nicknames, however, never stopped.

You figured all this may be due to his loneliness and the lack of company of his peers, so you were relieved when Aziel found a group of Word Bearers to hang out with. Better for him to go out and socialize rather than pour all his focus on you. It wouldn’t do him much good to have too much of a codependent relationship with you.

Them together were an odd bunch, they all seem to look so different! Some seem to be living armor, while others, like Aziel, have more human like forms but with horns protruding from their head, looking the living embodiments of demons or monsters. They visited weekly, typically to discuss their own theological literature from what little you can understand in gothic, pray, and chant. It seemed no different than the Sunday worship that your christian friend took you to once. Sometimes listening to their chanting puts you to sleep at night.

Today’s visit was the same. The Word Bearers passed by with a nod or a wave as they made their way down to the basement as usual. You looked at your own Astartes carrying a box in his arms. Curious, you asked him, “What do you have in there?”

“Items for our ritual, my darling goddess.”

You couldn’t help but blush at his pet names, but frown at the mention of a ritual, “Please tell me that a half-decomposed animal carcass is not part of it.” the memory of a decomposing deer carcass that stunk up the house for several days made you want to wretch. Where did Aziel acquire such a thing any way? You wonder.

Aziel nuzzled you and reassuringly replied, “I promise it is nothing of that sort.”

Your shoulders sagged with relief and turned to start filling the kettle, “The usual for you guys?”

“Yes. Thank you, my radiant light.” The Word Bearer leaned down and kissed your temple. You giggled and smiled at him, “You’re welcome. You go ahead, tea and mocha will be ready up here when you’re done.”

Aziel purred as he nuzzled you again then left. You started to brew very strong coffee. You stuffed the massive tea strainer full with rooibos tea mixture, set out honey, a large tin of powder hot chocolate, and a jar of dried chili flakes. They had a preference for sweet and strongly flavored drinks given how much they enjoyed the mocha you made. Aziel and his friends would take a while and when they start their ending chants, it would be the perfect time to boil water.

You were reading a novel on your tablet when a cloying smoky scent filled your nostrils as if something was baked way too long. Was something burning? Smoke billowed out when you opened the door to the basement.

“Aziel?” You called out worriedly.

You coughed and waved the smoke away from your face. Concerned and forgetting that your Astartes could withstand a lot more than the average human, you rushed downstairs.

“We summon you, St. Valentine!”

You paused when you heard them say the name “St. Valentine”, catching on that they were trying to summon something or someone. When the smoke cleared, you were left standing awkwardly on the stairs, the group of Word Bearers staring at you, all positioned around a summoning circle drawn with what you hope was red paint. Three of them were kneeling in prayer, one was holding a book aloft, and another one was swinging an incense burner pouring with smoke. Aziel stood in front of them as if directing the entire ritual. A heart shaped box of chocolates and a bouquet of red roses laid in the middle. It was clear the St. Valentine they were trying to summon was the St. Valentine of Valentine’s Day. Not that it did anything.

“Sorry… Aziel. I… I thought… something was burning.” You stuttered in embarrassment, quickly turning to go back upstairs, “I’ll go, sorry I interrupted you.”

Suddenly, you felt yourself falling forward into an armoured embrace.

“Don’t leave. Please, my guiding star.” Aziel rubbed his face against your hair like a cat seeking affection.

“But don’t you have to finish the ritual?”

His grip tightened, scared that you would disappear if he let go, “We are finished, but the ritual was not successful.” He mumbled.

You felt bad for breaking their focus at such a critical moment thus contributing to their failure, “I’m sorry…” you started.

As if he knew already what you’re going to say, Aziel reassured you, “You have no fault in this. It is much more difficult to summon anything in ancient Terra. Do not fret.”

His fire-patterned eyes held a glimmer of humour and something else as you looked at him, “We summoned you after all.” he chuckled.

You snorted and laughed, “I don’t think that counts. Why are you guys trying to summon St. Valentine?”

“We wish to ask for his wisdom in properly courting our bonded.” Aziel replied earnestly.

Your mouth dropped open. Heat spread across your face and your heart skipped a few beats. You stammered, “You… I… um… you want to court me?” Aziel was very devoted to you and at times a little too devoted, but you thought it was just the way he was as a Word Bearer. Never in your wildest imagination did you think that Aziel had feelings for you to the point he would try to summon St. Valentine to ask for advice. It was a lot to take in. Perhaps you’ll take the lead and rein back Aziel a bit, knowing how gungho he could get

The fact that his buddies went along with him to do so just made the situation even more ridiculous. You laughed and reached to rubbed the smudge of dirt off the base of one of his horns. Purring loudly, Aziel leaned into your touch. You then cupped his face with your hands stroking the scarified mark on his left cheek, “I am very flattered. But…”

Aziel’s face fell.

His face brightened once again when you pecked his nose with a quick kiss, “You silly man. I was about to say let’s talk about how I want to be courted and we can go from there.”

If your Word Bearer had a tail, he would be wagging it in happy excitement, “You are saying ‘Yes’?” he asked.

“Yes. Now, go clean up and bring the chocolate and flowers up with you. Then we’ll chat. I’m sure it will help your brothers as well.”

Aziel gently pressed his lips against yours, “Of course, my lovely moon lily.” before releasing you from his grasp.

New Official Survey Brings New The Sims 4 Kits Concepts

EA has sent out a new survey asking The Sims 4 players about potential concepts for upcoming kits.

As with previous surveys, like the recent one about expansion packs, the ideas presented are simply concepts that may or may not ever come to fruition. WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court on Wednesday upheld a Biden administration effort to regulate “ghost gun” kits that allow people to easily obtain parts needed to assemble firearms from online sellers.

The decision by a court that often backs gun rights resolves the legal dispute over whether the kits can be regulated the same way as other firearms.

The ruling was 7-2, with Justice Neil Gorsuch writing the majority opinion.

The regulation has been in effect since August 2022 as litigation has made its way through the court system, with the Supreme Court in August 2023 refusing to put it on hold. Manufacturers and sellers have to obtain licenses, mark products with serial numbers, require background checks and maintain records.

The Trump administration could seek to rescind the rule if it wishes to.

Issued by the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the regulation includes ghost guns within the definition of “firearm” as described in the Gun Control Act, a long-standing federal law that regulates guns.

The Gun Control Act says the regulations apply to “any weapon ... which will or is designed to or may be readily be converted to expel a projectile by the action of an explosive.” It also covers the “frame or receiver of any such weapon.” The frame or receiver is the part of a firearm that houses other components, including the firing mechanism.

The legal challenge was brought by Jennifer VanDerStok and Michael Andren, who own components they want to use to build guns. The plaintiffs also include gun rights groups and the makers and sellers of ghost guns.

Texas-based U.S. District Judge Reed O’Connor ruled in favor of the plaintiffs in 2023, with the New Orleans-based 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals mostly upholding his ruling.

The challengers argued that the ATF did not have the authority to unilaterally apply the Gun Control Act to the kits.

Although the case concerns gun regulation, it did not involve legal questions relating to the right to bear arms under the Constitution’s Second Amendment.

The court has regularly backed gun rights in other cases, including a recent ruling striking down a federal ban on accessories called bump stocks that allow semiautomatic rifles to fire more rapidly.

The court has also expanded the individual right to bear arms, including in a major 2022 ruling, although in a more recent ruling it backtracked somewhat in upholding a federal law that bars people subject to domestic violence restraining orders from possessing firearms.

Warnings: threatening, blackmail, Alpha Legion Shenanigans

Summary: Deimos speaks to one of the human representatives during the negotiations. He gets what he wants.

Deimos had been watching the negotiations between some of the leaders of the most powerful Astartes pods speaking with representatives of the human countries of Terra for the past several days. At the end of each day. Deimos would send coded information as to how things had been going to his handler, and waiting to see if his instructions would change based on the information that he had gathered.

He also spent time pretend-obliviously making one of the human representatives squirm and sweat each time they saw the face or heard the voice of the Blood Angel Sergeant he was pretending to be, as Representative Pearson was part of a least two different human organizations who had successfully captured different Astartes in order to dissect and experiment upon them… And because the sergeant he was pretending to be had recently been captured by one of Pearson’s groups using information that the human had himself given them.

The Alpha Legion had been content to let their cousins flounder in confusion as to what was happening to some of their legions/chapters. If they weren’t aware enough of the dangers that baseline humanity could be to them, that wasn’t their problem… That had been until one of these groups had captured a hybrid hydra pup, the first Alpha legionnaire born on Ancient Terra to a converted human mate and stolen a week ago.

That was the last mistake any of these groups would make, not that those who were outside of those facilities were aware of the storm that had swallowed most of their resources in righteous fury. All captive astartes were being tended to by Alpha Legion Apothecaries and would be released after the conclusion of these negotiations. Deimos glided gracefully after Representative Pearson, who had finally worked up the courage to ask for a private meeting between himself and the baseline human.

“What is it that you wanted to speak with me about?” Deimos asked, using the lilting tones of the Blood Angel he was pretending to be, amused at the way that the baseline human froze, blinking off the siren-like qualities a moment later.

“You are an imposter. You should leave quietly, or I will escalate the matter to security.” Pearson accused, pointing his finger dramatically at Deimos.

The Alpha Legionnaire almost broke character and started to cackle. If this was the way that Pearson wanted to play things, Deimos was happy to indulge him. “And just why do you think I am an imposter? What proof could you possibly have?”

“Because I received a report earlier this week about a mer matching your precise description being badly injured and brought to a medical facility for treatment. I have heard of the incredible healing factors you astartes possess, but the injuries that Astartes had suffered could not have healed as fully as you appear to be in such short period of time. Which means you are an imposter and should leave these negotiations.” Pearson explained, radiating smug satisfaction.

Deimos’ couldn’t help the small, fanged grin that appeared on his face as he purred “And?”

“And if you do not leave immediately I will alert security as to you being here under false circumstances and -” The baseline human blustered.

Deimos interrupted Pearson’s rant with a laugh “What makes you think that I have no right to be here? Especially since you were the one to leak the battle brother’s whose face I am borrowing’s location to the butchers and kidnappers who tormented him… Ah, but he is no longer in their grasp. None of the astartes that the little groups you work with are still captive. My brothers have rescued them all. Your little groups of maniacs fear that we astartes will try and take dominance of this world from you. Because of our strength and our abilities. But you're wrong. If we wanted dominion over this world we would have it already and none of the weapons nor all your military might would be enough to stop us.”

“I.. You accuse me of-” Pearson started, huffing up in indignation and distilled terror.

The Alpha legionnaire interrupted the baseline human again as he pulled out a series of pictures proving that Person was knowingly and willingly involved several of the Astartes kidnapping groups, setting them down on the table between them as he spoke “Drop the pretenses. I have more evidence of your crimes and wrongdoing on me, and there are copies in case you attempt to destroy this evidence.” Deimos was one piece of the Hydra. His legion worked in the shadows and gathered information. They knew all and saw all. “Step down from your position now, and publicly resign in front of the press at this event and explain your crimes and your true loyalties… If you refuse I’ll tell the World Eater and Black Templar representatives who you truly work with.”

“... If you do that, those blood-thirsty monster swill try-” The human protested.

“Will kill you for your crimes. Of course. That would be a mercy. Some of the pods represented here would make your death a long and agonizing spectacle. World Eaters and Black Templars both tend to make their kills swift.” Deimos rumbled, cutting off the human yet again and smirking down at him.

“How dare you threaten and attempt to blackmail me like this? Photos like this can be altered to seem incriminating!” Pearson blustered, fear and fury radiating off of him in waves.

“There are ways to check for tampering. Besides, these photos are the least of the proof I have for your crimes. Do as I say, or you will die by the end of this day. This is not a threat but a promise. Besides, you won’t be the only wretched mortal to die for your crimes today if you refuse to step down.” Deimos hummed, pulling out a small laptop, opening the video conference software and calling out “Alpharius, I have the human representative with me.”

“Well done Alpharius.” His captain praised, swimming into frame with two of the other leaders of the organizations being dragged into frame with him. Behind the older Alpha Legionnaire were dozens of gagged and bound hand to foot humans, all members of the kidnapping organizations in the room the captain was in. “You see, we have many of those involved in the kidnappings who still yet live. You have a simple choice, Representative Pearson. Confess your crime sin front of the cameras and our fellow astartes, and submit yourself for judgment…. Or you and all of the humans here will die.”

“I… You… How… How have you done this?” Pearson asks, helpless rage and terror wafting off of him in waves.

“We are Alpharius. We are the Hydra at the heart of everything. No detail is too small to escape our grasp. Our eyes see all, as our ears hear all. If we wanted to control this world, we’d have it already. So, representative, what is your choice?” The captain purred, smirking.

“I… I’ll…” Pearson swallows, staring at the other humans bound and at the mercy of astartes. He hangs his head and growls out “I’ll do as you’ve demanded of me, you bastards. Damn you all to hell!”

“Been there. Got bored. Came back.” Deimos cooed, smirking. “No time like the present, let’s go. Be seeing you, captain Alpharius.” with that he shut the laptop and placed it in a pouch before scruffing the unhappy human by the collar and dragging him bodily out of the chair, swimming out of the room and over to where the press were gathered. He knew that the other Astartes would be able to hear Pearson’s confession… This was going to be fun.

Five minutes later found Pearson standing on his own two feet, Deimos staying just close enough to encourage the human to speak without tipping off the press of just what the human was going to confess to.

“I… have… I have a confession to make. I have been working with a secret group of scientists, doctors and hunters to capture and study Astartes. I am well aware of the fact that these kidnappings have made Human-Astartes relations worse the world over… The organization’s goals were to assess the threat posed by Astartes, as well as to try and figure out the keys to their longevity and high healing factor. To be able to synthesize either of those abilities for humanity to use. We also hoped to be able to take apart Astartes’ technology and reverse engineer it for profit.” Pearson confessed, having hid his hands behind his back, to hide the way they trembled “I have realized now that this was wrong, and am stepping down from my position as representative, and submit myself to the justice system of my home country.”

Deimos had expected that Pearson would try to pull something like that. It was almost cute that he thought he was living past this next hour as a free person, and that he would be allowed to be tried by one of the human legal systems. Already the Alpha legionnaire could hear furious shouting from loyalists, chaos and renegade astartes. He could smell their rapid approach to this conference room, the scent of their fury and determination heavy in the air as they barrelled into the room.

All of them stopped dead, seeing Deimos in the guise of a Blood Angel as he stood directly behind the violently shaking and terrified human. Before any of them could try and demand something he said on external vox “As Pearson has wronged the Astartes more, his request for being tried by humanity is rejected. I will be taking him to where he will be tried and punished for his crimes.”

The assembled humans burst into dozens and dozens of loud statements and noises, each desperately trying to get his or the other astartes attention. Not that Deimos was actively listening to what they were saying, just making sure that they weren’t trying to get close enough to grab Pearson and attempt to get away from him.

He waited a beat before broadcasting his voice to the voxes of his fellow astartes alone, his eyes deliberately flashing teal as he purred “Hydra Dominatus.” Before he scooped up Pearson and swum off at his top speed, cackling to himself as the human in his arms whimpered and shook.

Do We Have an Ally in America? Or Something Else?

“You never want a serious crisis to go to waste. And what I mean by that is an opportunity to do things that you think you could not do before.” – Rahm Emanuel

Emanuel was Chief of Staff for Barack Obama in 2009-10, and his maxim hasn’t been forgotten by the former Obama administration staffers that are making US policy toward Israel and the Middle East today. They have passionately embraced it as Israel faces what is probably her greatest crisis since 1973 (arguably 1948), in which she has been attacked simultaneously from seven fronts: Gaza, Lebanon, Syria, Judea/Samaria, Yemen, Iran, and Iraq.

Since the traumatic massacre and hostage-taking of 7 October 2023, the Americans have attempted to bend the arc of events toward the goals set out in Obama’s Cairo speech in 2009 and the Baker/Hamilton report of 2006: a unified Palestinian state in Judea, Samaria, and Gaza; the re-division of Jerusalem, the return of the Golan Heights to Syria, and the elevation of Iran to the role of regional hegemon.

The publicly-stated objective of this exercise is to bring peace to the region by ending the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and placing Iran in the role of policeman to suppress the extremist Sunni forces in Iraq and Syria that express themselves in the form of ISIS (for example). This will theoretically enable the US to disengage from the region, immunize herself from terrorism emanating from it, and turn her attention toward her true rival, China.

It’s not clear if the authors of this doctrine, particularly Ben Rhodes, a co-author of the Iraq Study Group report and the writer of Obama’s Cairo speech, intend that a byproduct of it would be to greatly empower the enemies of Israel and even bring about the end of the Jewish state. But either they don’t understand that the tribal and religious aspirations of the Palestinian Arabs will never be assuaged by the possession of only part of what they believe is their birthright, or they do understand and fully support them. Similarly, they either fail to take seriously or approve of Iran’s stated desire to “wipe Israel off the map.”

From a strictly American point of view, the policy is defective and dangerous. The theocratic and oppressive Iranian regime is not kidding when it displays banners calling for “Death to America,” the “Great Satan.” The Obama/Rhodes plan which legitimizes Iran becoming a nuclear-armed power – something that is expected at any moment – could not be more irresponsible, especially considering the penetration of Iran’s terrorist proxy organization Hezbollah into South and Central America and the open southern border of the US.

Nevertheless, the Biden/Harris administration seems to have embraced this policy, and its actions in response to Israel’s crisis since 7 October bear that out. US intelligence agencies are aware that Hamas’ claims of disproportionate civilian casualties in Gaza are false. However US officials, sometimes including the president, continue to take them at face value in their public statements, and have used this as an excuse to hold up the delivery of weapons to Israel. Despite statements to the contrary, it’s not just 2000 pound bombs that are being withheld, but numerous items – including JDAM kits, needed to convert ‘dumb’ bombs to munitions that can be precisely targeted. Clearly, if the motivation were to reduce collateral damage, then the delivery of JDAMs would be expedited, not delayed.

But 2000-pound bombs with JDAM kits would be especially useful if Israel chose to attack the Iranian nuclear facilities. And other weapons and systems that would be critical to that mission have also been delayed. For example, KC-46A air tankers, which would be used to refuel planes on their way to Iran, were contracted for in 2020, but after several delays are now expected in May 2025.

Since 7 October the US administration has been pressuring Israel to adopt a “day after” plan that places a “reformed” Palestinian Authority in charge of Gaza. The administration prevented the IDF from entering Rafiah for several weeks, claiming that it would take four months to remove the civilian population to safety; this was ultimately accomplished in two weeks. Control of Rafiah, which is located on the border between Gaza and Egypt, is essential to cut off the flow of weapons and supplies to Hamas. It has also been falsely claimed that Israel is preventing the entry of humanitarian aid into Gaza, that there is widespread starvation, and so on. These accusations have been used to gain leverage to force Israel to accept a cease-fire deal that would allow some of the hostages held by Hamas to go home, but would make it impossible for Israel to control the governance of Gaza, and which would result in Hamas reconstituting its military and civil apparatus. In essence, the deal the US wants is our surrender.

The US believes, correctly, that Israel’s PM, Binyamin Netanyahu, is an obstacle to the attainment of their objectives, both in the Israeli-Palestinian arena and toward Iran. Netanyahu has insisted that Israel retain security control of Gaza for at least a time after the war; that means control of the border between Gaza and Egypt, the “Netzarim Corridor” that divides the northern and southern parts of the Strip, and a 1 km wide security zone along the border between Gaza and Israel. Hamas will not accept these terms, and so the Americans and Netanyahu’s domestic opponents blame him for the lack of a deal.

The Obama/Rhodes circle that is calling the shots in the US has had a personal animus against Netanyahu since the beginning of the Obama administration, which was exacerbated when he spoke against the Iran nuclear deal to a joint session of the US Congress in 2015. Since then it has supported his political opponents in multiple ways.

More recently, the Biden/Harris administration has begun a campaign of placing economic sanctions on Israelis (some of whom are American citizens and some who are not) for participation in or support of alleged mistreatment of Palestinians. As Michael Doran explains, the purpose is to “create a climate of controversy around Netanyahu and his right-wing coalition partners.” Sanctions can apply to any entity that does business with a sanctioned individual, so even if he or she has no assets in the US, a target can be cut off from employment or their Israeli bank account. The punishment of Israeli nationals by a foreign power without due process is an abuse of our sovereignty, and the international imposition of sanctions on ordinary citizens is unprecedented.

As we await a coordinated attack from Iran, Hezbollah, and perhaps the Houthis in Yemen, the terrorists of Hamas and Islamic Jihad in the PA, and the Iranian-controlled militias in Iraq and Syria, ten months after the most murderous attack on Jews since the Holocaust, and after ten months of outrageous lies and antisemitic vilification by international institutions and the world media, we wonder if we really have an ally in the US, or something else.

In April of this year Iran launched hundreds of drones and ballistic and cruise missiles at Israel. With the help of the US and a few other countries and the expenditure of a billion dollars in defensive operations, Israel destroyed most of them. But the intent behind those tons of explosives thrown at us was murderous. The response from Israel should have been painful enough to ensure that the Iranian regime would never dare try it again. Instead, we were told by the Americans that if we want their support, only a symbolic gesture would be permitted. So we bombed a radar station. And now here we are again.

The whole thing seems orchestrated. The US has sent forces to the region, in part to protect us, but also to ensure that everything goes according to plan. Iran will be allowed to attack and hurt us enough to cause us to sign on the dotted line for a general cease-fire, one that will lead to the Palestinian state that the Americans want so badly. We will be allowed to hit back – symbolically. We will especially not be allowed to hit Iranian nuclear installations. Netanyahu, hated by the Left, will now lose any support he has from the Right.

Biden/Harris will say they have brought peace to the Middle East. But Israel will face a resurgent Hamas, a Hezbollah more dangerous than ever, a terror state next door to Tel Aviv, and a nuclear Iran. This is a recipe for even more war, and it’s not at all clear that we can continue to prevail.

Dev Pipeline: Firmament and the Red Dragon's Tale

I had told my brother that the Lego Corporation would not get my money unless they took it from my corpse. For my birthday, he pooled budgets with a few other co-conspirators to buy me... not the official Lego product, but a virtually-identical, brick-for-brick knock-off of the kit made by a Chinese company (thus, in his view, satisfying my condition).

From a purely consumerist standpoint, this was an extremely good idea. Two of the 3700 bricks were misshapen, and several unique specialty parts (magic swords, armour, hairstyles, etc) were substituted with default alternatives – but at about 1/5th the price point (before shipping), it's still an overwhelmingly better purchase than the official Lego kit. I can't speak to the labour practices or other ethical concerns, but the knowledge that I might be able to cheaply obtain large quantities of nearly-perfect bricks will be important later in this story.

And yes, this post is something of a product review, but I promise all the details will also bear some relevance to the development process.

If you're into Lego-as-display-piece, it must be remarked that the kit looks amazing – but I'm not, and as a toy, it's quite underwhelming. Except for the largely empty meadow and the totally empty bridge, all of the playable spaces are extremely crowded, cramped, and awkward to manipulate. Only a few of them disassemble in ways that offer better access, and they are almost all constructed to be accessed from the side (like a dollhouse), which means that foreground objects obstruct background ones, and it's hard to apply the downward pressure needed to anchor a figure to the floor studs.

It's not an accident, apparently, that traditional dungeon crawl games used a top-down perspective for mapping. Thanks to gravity, most objects rest against the floor of a dungeon, and relatively few things are suspended in the air – so foreground occlusion is less frequent if you view the dungeon from above. Regardless, I also made note of the fact that spaces in a physical model need to be large enough to accommodate fingers and hands in between the walls, furniture, and figurines.

Finally, the kit also includes a disastrous, plot-hole-ridden, and debatably-broken D&D module authored by Chris Perkins that reads like a rushed first draft. In the process of completely rewriting it for my usual play group, I also converted it for use with Into the Odd, since I can't stand to play D&D anymore. If anyone is interested in that, send me an ask. The results of this little playtest were interesting: while the group agreed with my various criticisms above, they all felt that the physical interactivity of the dungeon module held incredible potential – and that a creating a purpose-built dungeon and system would be a very worthwhile endeavour.

I suddenly realized that the little game I had been designing for my niece actually had a much broader appeal.

Witch and Angel is the working title for an original fantasy story that I've been working furiously on which is about a disabled witch named Kit Charmspeaker and a fallen angel named One Who Sits At The Feet Of God In Love and it's also about disability and healing and academia and a plague and what happens when religion sells out to power.

Kit is a former academic who was into like, researching experimental magic to try to reverse engineer it into weapons of mass destruction for the Queen, until a casting went wrong and their spell circle got overloaded and backfired onto them, taking away their ability to cast magic and leaving them with curse scars on their hands that never stop bleeding, along with additional pain and chronic fatigue. After the accident, the University dropped them like a sack of bricks, and so, furious and betrayed, Kit reluctantly "retired" to a small village in the countryside to be a hedgewitch using plain old mundane medicinal herbs and their vast collection of magic books to try and help people.

Angel is a terribly kind, terribly dense thousands-of-years old entity created to love and to serve Aeth, the goddess of Justice. Angel has spent the last several thousand years trapped in a panopticon, guiltily watching the Earth in its stolen moments and wondering why the perfect justice it believes in...doesn't seem to happen in practice. And he might have shared his questions with a few of the other angels. And possibly he used his power to do something that wasn't a direct command from his god...and saved the life of a random human woman just because she was suffering and he wanted to help her. And while all the other angels are probably quite aware that Aeth has long since sold out to the Queen of the Archanean Empire in exchange for more converts and more power...Angel believes in Her and he loves Her and he Isn't. And so he asks Her about it. And then She punts it down to Earth to try and teach it a lesson about questioning authority.

And the beautiful thing about Kit and Angel is that they're both absolute freaks in equal-but-opposite directions and they absolutely save each other's lives from the moment they meet, even though they initially drive each other crazy because Angel is absolutely still bought in to all of his god's brainwashing about magic that comes from a source other than Her power being evil, and Kit is very very done with life and bitter about having to cart around a naive sunshiny optimist of a rogue angel, do you know how much trouble they could get in if the Church found out? (they say, caringly, as they care very much and are actually entirely in their element with a new Project to work on)

I don't know if this is all coherent but I've been turning Kit & Angel around and around in my mind at speeds approaching the sound barrier and I love them So much

Supreme Court Upholds Biden's 7-2 Ruling on Ghost Guns, Citing ATF Authority and Crime Surge

The U.S. Supreme Court has upheld a Biden administration regulation on ghost guns, ruling 7-2 that these firearms, which can be assembled at home from kits or with 3D printers, are subject to the same federal regulations as traditional firearms. The decision, authored by Justice Neil Gorsuch, supports the requirement for serial numbers, background checks, and age verification for purchasing ghost gun kits online.

The ruling reverses a decision by the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, which had struck down the regulation. Guest Post: Comparing two different R170 SLKs

Editors Note: This is part four in a series by Nick Gruzevskis about owning a Modern Mercedes convertible – in this case his R170 SLK230. The previous entries can be found here. Two cars of the same chassis/model often drive differently after 20-30 years, depending on mileage, maintenance & number of owners. I got the opportunity this weekend to drive a 2003 SLK230 Special Anniversary Edition, enabling a comparison with my 1998 SLK230. To be completely transparent, these cars are quite different, the Special Anniversary Edition SLK230 has a touch over 70,000 Kilometres on odometer and is completely original, while mine has 185,000 Kilometres, has engine mods and has a set of R171 17” staggered wheels.

I met Franco at the MBCV Clubhouse, pulling up next to his car. Franco is a newish MBCV member and was keen to meet up with other R170 owners. Since purchasing my R170 I haven’t met anyone else that owns one, apart from a Jensen Club member who lives in South Australia. This started me thinking, how many R170s were sold in Australia, it was over 2500, with the SLK230 accounting for over 80%.

Franco was very knowledgeable about his M111 engine, as he quickly told me he had the smaller clutchless M45 supercharger and I had the larger M62, with the modified ASP pulley kit. Franco went onto to say, the M62 is more tuneable, as its larger and moves more air, but spins slower and engages at 2700rpm. The M45 moves less air but is always engaged. The facelifted R170 has the M111.984, it has higher compression, but also MAF sensor has been relocated close to throttle body, to provide smoother throttle response. I won’t bore you with any other differences, but they are listed in this Benz World thread. The SLK230 Special Anniversary Edition, had chrome strips around the window edges, chrome bar above rear number plate, a lovely Nappa leather interior, aluminium looking upper and lower dash console, grey speed and engine RPM gauges, unique 16” alloy wheels.

I offered Franco I drive of my SLK, but he declined, so I took him for a drive in mine. My SLK230 has a Jekyll and Hyde personality. It can be driven normally, and it’s quite & refined, but when you get over 2500rpm, you can hear the whine of the supercharger and becomes a different beast.

Moving to Franco’s car, his steering felt a bit lighter, and the body felt tighter, probably a combination of the additional mileage and upgraded 17” wheels on my car. His car felt more responsive down low and slightly more refined, but when stabbing the accelerator, didn’t have the outright acceleration as mine. Would be interesting to compare an original pre-facelift SLK230 to Franco’s facelifted car.

it is referred to as the [LIGHT] in some logs, before the official name was coined, 4,000 years after the ancient impactor event which brought it to the Del-Col solar system.

A form of Ultraviolet light in the Deep UV spectrum, but with qualities never seen before. similar to a virus taking over a host, objects, creatures, and machinery subjected to SCREI radiation become unpredictable, erratic, and usually very dangerous, if they don't succumb to radiation poisoning.

The first ever audio recording of an object corrupted by this radiation was a set of cables nearby the crash site from the Ancient Impactor.

The first comprehensible "Notes" these corrupted strings played have been referred to as the "Four notes of the light". Any musician that attempts to make a track relating to this radiation usually includes these notes in some form or another in their music.

UV-S: the recorded corrupted cables near the ancient impactor, days later.

Extra info, along with how most of the music for project SCREI sounds below.

SCREI radiation can, for as of currently unknown reasons, be seen by the average human's visible spectrum. Showing up as either a deep violet, or a pale pink. This is best observed with objects corrupted with enough radiation to inflict a yearly's maximum dose of regular radiation in a minute, or higher.

As the bombings in Gaza continue, the US approves the sale of guided bomb kits to Israel

The United States government has approved a sale of $320 million Spice kits of precision guided ammunition to Israel, specifically designed to convert unguided bombs into more accurate GPS-guided ammunition.

These precision-guided bomb kits, known as Spice Family Gliding Bomb Assemblies, are manufactured by Rafael Advanced Defense Systems, an Israeli defense company, with Rafael's U.S. subsidiary facilitating this transaction.

The decision to supply these munitions to Israel has sparked debates and criticism, mainly due to the ongoing conflict in Gaza, where the Gaza Ministry of Health reported a significant number of Palestinian victims. Israel used accurately guided ammunition to achieve military goals in Gaza, resulting in devastating damage, especially in densely populated urban areas.

The U.S. State Department authorized the sale to Israel on October 31, which follows a previous transaction for the same equipment valued at almost $403 million, which was approved on February 5, 2023, contributing to the ongoing discussion and debate around the use of precision ammunition in the Gaza conflict.

The authorization of the sale coincides with a major airstrike in the Jabaliya neighborhood of Gaza, which allegedly involved the use of 2,000-pound bombs, resulting in numerous victims and drawing attention to the use of such ammunition in densely populated areas.

This sales process is distinct because it involves a foreign entity, Rafael Advanced Defense Systems, which directly buys weapons from an American company, Rafael USA, bypassing the typical foreign military sales channels of the U.S. government. As a result, the approval of the State Department was not as widely publicized as is usual in the case of arms sales.

The State Department's letter of approval was addressed to House Speaker Mike Johnson, the House Foreign Relations Committee and the Senate Foreign Affairs Committee, which oversee the sale of weapons. It is essential to note that Israel's request for this $320 million equipment was previously initiated and underwent an informal review process with congressional committees, only receiving final approval from the State Department at the end of October.

There are no SPICEs of any version in the U.S. arsenal, so the weapons will be built from scratch (whether internally in the U.S. or in Israel) for delivery to the Israeli Air Force. Although the number of SPICEs is not specified, it is estimated that the amount is at least 2,000 pumps, although some sources point to 2,500.

On the other hand, it should be emphasized that the U.S. has already replenished the Israeli Air Force's JDAM and GBU-39 stocks directly from the U.S. armed forces stocks.
