[Previous Chapter] | [All Chapters] | [Next Chapter]
December 2023
The bell rings, and Eddie puts those thoughts away, shoves them back into whatever box they have escaped from. Buck lets go of him, finally, regretfully, pulls off the sweater as he pounds down the stairs, and there's not much time for inappropriate thoughts after that.
It's not a complicated call, just some festive road rage resulting in a fender bender, but it takes them the better part of the hour to examine everyone and make sure they can go home without dropping dead before the new year. That means, though, that when they finally make it back to the firehouse, everyone who was missing before has arrived.
A high pitched "Uncle Buck!" greets them when they jump out of the engine, followed by a whirlwind in a rainbow cardigan, and then Jee is throwing himself at Buck, who looks, somehow, even happier than he did earlier. He picks her up and then Eddie loses sight of him, because he's folded into a warm hug by Pepa, who kisses his cheek.
"Edmundo," she says, "mi angelito. Merry Christmas.”
Eddie hugs her tight. “You too, Tia. I'm glad you made it."
"Of course I made it."
She pulls back and then there's Chris, who lets Eddie hug him too, preteen angst be damned.
"Merry Christmas, dad," he says into Eddie's shoulder, audibly smiling, and Eddie feels warm all over, a comfortable, familiar warmth, one he doesn't have to lock up anywhere.
When Eddie releases him, Chris instantly gravitates towards Buck. They exchange the newest version of their secret handshake and then a hug, one-armed because Buck is still holding Jee, and Buck achieves the impossible by glowing even brighter. He radiates happiness like the sun does light. It should be a fire hazard. That much happiness could kill a man, Eddie thinks, but Buck isn't just any man, and he's been made to glow like this.
"Actually, Eddie," Buck says, when they all turn towards the stairs, "can—can we—"
But then he stops, just as a warm hand finds Eddie's, and soft lips find Eddie’s cheek.
"How was the call?" Marisol asks, her brown eyes warm and beautiful in the artificial light of the app bay.
"Uh." Eddie glances over his shoulder but Buck is gone, his broad back already halfway up the stairs. He turns back to Marisol and returns her smile. "It was fine. Just some freeway drama."
"You can tell me about it over some eggnog," Marisol suggests, and Eddie sees no reason to deny her.
Later, he bumps into Buck again, by the cookies this time, and fortunately without a physical collision. Jee is still clinging to him and Buck is in a hurry, or so he tells Eddie while shoveling cookies onto a paper plate.
"I promised Chris I'd show him how to get better at Firefighting Simulator," he says, grabbing a bunch of lovingly decorated gingerbread firetrucks and piling them up next to a stack of chocolate chip cookies. "He thinks it's going to be lame, so I have to prove him wrong."
"It is kind to lame," Eddie says, "and no offense, but you kind of suck at it."
"Offense taken," Buck tells him, pointing at him with a candy cane. "Offense very much taken."
"Cookie," Jee demands, making grabby hands, and Buck adjusts her on his hip and hands her a gingerbread truck.
"Anyway," he says, "when I'm done with that, can we—you know, can we talk?"
Eddie stops what he's doinghe's halfway through a chocolate chip cookie, which freezes in midair, miles away from his mouth—and looks at Buck. He thinks back to the stolen moment by the Christmas tree, and wonders—and tells himself to stop.
"Sure," he says casually, and nods, for good measure. "Just find me when he's done laughing at you."
"Fu-dge you," Buck coursecorrects at the last second, glancing at Jee. "He'll love it. You'll see."
Chris doesn't love it. Chris thinks it's lame, and ends up kicking Buck's ass at Mario Kart instead.
Buck tells him this much later, when he corners Eddie in the kitchen, where Eddie is brewing coffee refills for those amongst them whose night won’t end when the party does, who will be sleeping in the bunk room as opposed to their own beds.
"Told you so," Eddie says, taking a moment to bask in the glory of being right, a moment that's cut short when Buck turns to him, with that intensity once again haunting his blue eyes.
Written for the @911countdowntochristmas - this was supposed to be 24 drabbles but the Buddie NDE speculation going around pre 8x08 inspired me and now it’s a 24-mini-chaptered fic instead. And definitely more hurt/comfort than fluff. Oops.

Controversial take but. Fnaf is the closest we have gotten to 2010s/2020s equvalient of Bionicle. Yes, even more than Hero Factory, Ninjago, Chima, Lego Monkie Kid, Rebel Nature, Greg Farshtey's "Legacy", Xenoblade Chronicles, that one indie adventure game inspired by Bionicle, Ascending Depths and all those Afterman spiritual successors Bionicle fans have tried to make in the past few years. Yes, even more than those obscure cult classic JRPGs I have compared Bionicle to in the past.
Because Bionicle and Fnaf both:
Started relatively simple with a strongly effective unique premise at the center before gradually expanding into a sprawling narrative
Caught the audiences attention by presenting a captivating mystery from the get go that drove curiosity and intrigue
Because of the above, the community is heavily based on theorycrafting and speculation, with many fans trying to figure out the mystery of the story.
Are surprisingly storydriven in mediums/genres generally not associated with stories
Became popular overnight, creating a sort of cultural zeitgeist
Were a last-ditch effort by their creators who at time were struggling financically (Bioncle was released at the height of Legos dark/dork era, while Fnaf was Scott Cawthons last attempt at making a game before opting out of the industry)
Have (one of) their creator be relatively actively engaged with the community, interacting with the fans much to their fans amusement and frustration.
Pretty much were among the fiction that popularized the "lore" as a concept.
Get retconned and coursecorrected to hell and back, but not to the extent fans may think.
Experienced gradual tonal and genre-shift from one genre with scifi elements to more full on scifi.
As years went on, the unique appeal of the series (tropical island high fantasy for Bionicle, horror for Fnaf) were diluted because of aforementioned genre-shift to the point some people hate the later era and vastly prefer the earlier years.
In addition the mystery elements were diluted either answering everything or by complicating the story.
Heavily rely their storytelling on supplemental material on their later years, especially books.
Cryptic and vague at times to the point of frustrating
Have a main villain whose portrayal changed from simple to more complicated mastermind. Both main villains also had initially their name hidden, before their true name was revealed later on.
In spite of having its appeal be in its robot-characters, plotdriven instead of character driven
Also gradually drove away from the characters center of the appeal (Toa/the main four animatronics) to those who were involved in the origins of the story.
Had a satisfying ending (Journeys End/Pizza Sim), but still continued past that, including elements that the fans hate.
These post ending content had the main antagonist be a deeply lore-important impersonator who made the lore more complicated than it should be (Velika/Mimic)
Have a pseudo soft reboot people have...very mixed to negative feelings on (Bara Magna for Bionicle, Steel Wool era for Fnaf)
Have a fictional element act as a central mcguffin of the story (Protodermis and Remnant/Agony respectively) which is frustratingly vague and poorly explained.
Have a rather dedicated transformative fandom who make new additions to the larger mythos, or expand on the pre-existing lore. The creators actively support this, and have even endorsed fancreations or made some fan-elements official.
The creators simutaneously plan everything ahead and are a hack. At the same time
There are probably more but those are the ones I think of at the top of my head

That is a very good assessment. I don’t really have a whole lot to say, because this is just a self-evidently amazing arc, and likely where the comic peaks. Honest question: was Jon ever bad at writing emotional arcs? Because they are the best moments in this comic, and the only one that didn’t work was the party arc.
And speaking of, I think my only problem with Chelsea (aside from, like you said, her stalker crush towards Peter) was her inconsistent characterization, how Jon couldn’t decide if he wanted Chelsea to be a bully who hates Peter for being a weirdo or a sympathetic loner who has gone through a lot. And this arc works for me because yes, it’s been clear for a while now that Jon had finally decided that the latter option is much more interesting and leads to some incredible emotional conflict.
The “death of the author” bit is interesting, because remember back when you said that the comic being “semi-autobiographical” was holding it back, and how Jon eventually removed that claim from the website? This arc makes me realize how better the comic is for straying from those elements. After all, this comic is mostly fiction, so it’s at its best when it’s allowed to be full-on fiction.
Glad you agree. Jon is really good at making the emotional moments come naturally, and I think it’s partially because he is good at toneshifts.. They almost never feel forced. And I feel like this where Chelsea’s characterization is finally being coursecorrected after being so badly handled in the first half of the comic.
The thing is, this comic could have taken bits and pieces of Jon’s childhood and mix them into the story because everyone often integrates experiences into their stories. If Jon only had nuance while handling it and didn’t always say “oh yeah this is based on blablablah”, then the “semi-autobiographical” stuff wouldn’t have been such a problem.

the craziest part about that str@ngeaeons post is the people in the notes being like, guys this is exactly the kind of callout posts that got rita harassed and terminated do better :/ AS IF THATS THE WHOLE FUCKING PROBLEM??? you know perfectly well that thats not the entire thing you're just too willfully ignorant to say the word transmisogyny. already ive seen people desperate to be on the 'right side' of history covering their asses and coursecorrecting and pivoting to this weird fucking anti-cancel callout culture position. it's weird and it's spineless.

Agility
Being Fast or being agile, which is more important? If we have to look at air force terms, a fighter jet's importance depends on how agile it is during a dog fight(is an aerial battle between fighter aircrafts conducted at close range). Aircraft's ability to adapt and keep on flying(most important!) matters during close encounters. It may be evading an incoming missle with flare or just manoeuvring to avoid getting hit. But why dont we build a fighter jet that can fly as fast as it can to leave the dog fight? Its not practically possible. All fighter jets including latest ones cannot have a sustained flight after breaking sound barrier. Its not possible to carry a lot of fuel owing to size of fighter jets and also the missiles it has to carry(to attack). In our life(to keep going) sometimes we have to take up course correction and adapt to the situation so that we can tackle it(situation) with our agility.   Its like this. Learn to adapt at the same time keep on learning to adapt.

So now the big question is, do you know who you and what want to be instead? It’s time to focus on what you do want rather than on what you don’t want, because if not now, when? Let’s talk! Course Correction is the third chapter of Dead Space and takes place on the Engineering Deck. After landing at the Engineering Deck, Engineer Isaac Clarke receives a video message from Zach Hammond. With a concerned look, Hammond informs Isaac that the USG Ishimura is out of fuel and must be refueled. Neilen tries to pull off one last attack and then INSTANTLY dies again thanks to Rembrandt. Wow. Everytime I think this arc has reached the apex pathetic, it somehow surpasses it.
At least the Vacation Arc and Oh Snap Arcs had a sensible structure. Yes the reason both of those arcs sucked was because they were at first comedic arcs that seemingly became serious and plot relevant due to how they built up Deegan as the center of everything. This arc however is a complete disaster, it's a rushed mess, and it's like anytime Mookie is trying to coursecorrect, he goes "nah" and rushes shit again.

#CourseCorrection Imagine you are travelling somewhere and you were off course by 1 degree, after 1 foot you will miss your target by 0.2 inches. After 100 yards you'll be off by 5.2 feet, if you were traveling from San Francisco to L.A. you'll be 6 miles off. If you were going from San Francisco to Washington DC you would end up on the other side of Baltimore 42.6 miles away. Over time a mere 1 degree in error makes a huge difference. The same is true of life and business. You cannot run either on autopilot, there has to be results for our endeavors. (Un)Fortunately if you have a dream backed by goals, a plan and the execution, course correction will come easy. #JumatatuNjema (at Boulder, Colorado) https://www.instagram.com/p/B1HMqxNA7UM/?igshid=13zyn1b1h0nvy
