Only We Understood (A Hiccstrid Story)

A/N: This is a Hiccstrid story inspired by the HTTYD short, Dawn of the Dragon Racers. It takes place in the events before Race to the Edge. Enjoy!

I stood in the training arena staring up, towards the sky. Snotlout and Hiccup just finished a round of dragon racing. Hiccup beat Snotlout by a hair, or in this case, a scale, and the boys were out of breath. Across their cheeks, in bright face paint were their team colors. Snotlout wore red and yellow stripes across his forehead, chin, and cheeks because he claimed that they were the colors of fire and symbolized how hot he was. Sometimes he could be so full of himself. It was quite ironic because Snotlout could be a bit dimwitted at times. The fact that he was using absurd symbolism to show off only proved what lengths he was willing to go though to brag about himself. Hiccup, on the other hand, had two glowing red stripes across his cheeks. His dragon, Toothless, had matching red paint upon his own face. Although I'd never admit it, Hiccup's bond with Toothless was adorable, and it was his sensitive and caring side that I found attractive. 

As the boys approached me on their dragons, Snotlout started flexing his muscles in an attempt to flirt with me. Ugh! He could be too much to handle at times. Instead, I walked over to Hiccup.

“I always knew red was your color,” I said, boldly.

Hiccup scratched the back of his head with his left hand. 

“Aww! Astrid, thank you,” he said, clearly a little flustered from the attention. 

I smirked as I watched his cheeks, which were already streaked with red paint turn redder as he blushed at my remark. He was too cute. 

Then, a mischievous idea popped into my mind. I responded to Hiccup's nervous squirming by saying, “I was talking to Toothless.”

I don't know what came over me, but Hiccup's priceless reaction to my remark was totally worth it. His shoulders slumped, and he gave me a pout, that resembled one of a toddler whose parents denied him the chance to go ax throwing because he was too young. Hiccup was so fun to tease.

Toothless looked up at me as if questioning the sincerity of my compliment. I looked down at him and raised an eyebrow. The dragon was smart and could sense a joke a mile away. I smiled at him, and he gave me a toothy (or toothless) grin.

Then, I locked eyes with Hiccup and beamed at him too. Seemingly recovered from his pouty expression, he smiled back at me. In the brief second that we locked eyes, we shared an unspoken message. Although neither of us said a word, we both acknowledged something. Something that only we understood.

Lately I've been thinking a lot about the dragon-like humanoid race I came up with. I think they are pretty cool. Still don't know how to call them :\.

So yeah, I really like monsters with human faces, i don't know why. I just think they're neat

Last night while continuing my usual bedtime story that I make up as I imagine a bit more of it every night (that's how I'm building my dragons' world and lore), I came up with a new dragon design that if I can pull off, should be lovely. I'll try to draw it soon.
