Hey there anon! I'm sure many of us do, what with the whole "fridged wife" trope and all that.

I'll also say that from a story-telling perspective, a sympathetic villain's backstory only works if we--the reader--have reason to believe that things were better before. We get nothing on Sylvia, so she tends to seem very overrated if you only assess her in-game appearances.

"How she died," huh? I've got some stuff for that! Mind my tone, this is about to get dense.

First, my interpretation of Sylvia Drake comes from Avalon, not Dragonspyre (which is strongly implied in-game). She grew up with her step-mother and her 2 sisters--one older, one younger--and she was on good terms with her family for the most part. I promise to expand more on her family later!

I did steal a canonical part of her character, that being her ability to learn fire magic in her young-adult years. In my version of the Spiral universe, most magic-users have a primary elemental school and then learn a secondary spiritual school, and Sylvia's primary was pyromancy.

I had a story written up about her finding a way to be both a strong, extroverted pyromancy and a nurturing, gentle theurgist at the same time. She finds that balance through teaching!

There's a standard to theurgy, especially with healing people and making sure you don't get complacent with your abilities, but she also knows that healed people heal others better than most. Hence why the kids loved her but also knew not to trifle with her. The Master of Death married her, after all.

I think she was definitely a tough grader, but in a way that all her students knew was fair. You’re dealing with people’s lives—you can’t afford to make mistakes and just “get by” in her class!

Taryn Ashblade, Scion of Bartelby, Savior of the Spiral, Proud Battlemage, and most importantly, Arcanum librarian.

Taryn is a 38 year old pyromancer and the (not so young) wizard of fame. Her parents hail from Dragonspyre, a Human battlemage and a Draconian foot soldier, both fighting under the banner of Dragonspyre. Taryn herself was born and raised in Firecat Alley, though her Dragonspyre lineage is of deep importance to her. Despite growing up in Wizard City she never enrolled in Ravenwood, instead being trained in the ways of Dragonspyres Battlemages by her mother. She takes great pride in carrying on the legacy, don’t you dare call her a wizard.

Before being swept up in the Spiral’s excitement Taryn worked at the Wizard City library. She now works in the Arcanum, with access to more archives than she ever thought possible. Her biggest passion is working to preserve and spread the histories and stories the Spiral are at risk of becoming no more. First Dragonspyre and it’s ruined libraries and dying practice of knowledge crystals, with Azteca becoming her newfound, if guilt ridden focus later on. Another focus of hers is aiding in the exchange between long cutoff worlds, Khrysalis, Empyrea, Lemuria - generations of art, history, knowledge that should be spread.

She comes off as rude to some. She doesn't enjoy playing elaborate social song and dances, just say what you mean. She’s fiercely honor bound and loyal, she believes in her fight for the Spiral deeply, she does what she does out of a genuine love for people. She does not begrudge her constant role as the Spirals savior, battle and glory are in her blood, and someone has to the job, might as well be someone competent. Still, she’ll deny it, but she really could do with a break. Taryn is an avid reader, she prides herself on her ever growing personal collection. Nonfiction, historical comedies, and corny adventure novels are her personal favorites. She's a lesbian, and has an on and off thing with Dalia Falmea, it's complicated right now.

Her magical focus is an enchanted draconium glaive, passed down through her family for generations and the source of her family name. She takes the honor of wielding this weapon very seriously, more so now that it’s one of few surviving connections she has to Her families homeland.
