That’s the first surprise.

The second? 

The Time Variance Authority want to help, now. 

( Granted, it’d mostly been Wade who did the gruntwork of sending Elektra and Blade back to their Universes, but he had hit a wall when it came to you and Gambit considering you two were— according to him: “A coked up version of being homeless. Universe-less.” )

So here you are, a stray of the Multiverse, standing on the platform of a mid-century aestheticised monitor room somewhere outside the constraints of time, trying not to double over from the vertiginous aftermath of being thrown through Wade’s weird orange warbling door of space. 

TemPad, he’d called the device. Or… something. You’re half-sure you have a concussion, to be honest.

Alioth had done a number on you. 

Remy’s concerned.

“Here’s what I don’t understand,” Wade says, mask rolled up to his nose. (There’s a spoon and plate of key lime pie in his hands. You’re not even sure where he got it from.) “Where did Gambit come from? How come he just spawned into the MCU’s metaphysical Backrooms?”

“Candidly, he is a unique case.” 

Remy pulls his gaze from you to Hunter B-15.

“You, Mr. LeBeau, are the prime example of a Variant that’s borne from a timeline decaying just as quickly as it was formed. A rare type that fades instantly without unnatural interference, because an Anchor failed to develop.”

One of the CRT screens zip to a retro rubber-hose animated diagram: rapidly branching roots, ominous red flashing, and then an immediate blink into nothing. Talk about dramatic effect.

“Your Universe falls in the rare category of those that never managed to come into fruition; but sometimes— incredibly rarely— remnants just like you manage to slip through, and instead of ceasing to exist… Well, you automatically end up getting spit into the Void.”

A pause.

Then, from behind, Wade bursts into a cackle.

“Ha! Wow, she basically called you a discontinued fucking nobody,” he wheezes. “You’re quite literally the equivalent of a failed movie pitch that’s been forgotten on the floor of Feige’s writers’ room.”

Screens flicker. 

Your breath hitches. 

Versions of different Gambit’s play out in the monitor-wall, all alike and yet different in their individual realities. Some have black eyes. Some have top-hats (“Ah, that’s 2009 Origins,” Wade muses. “Do all Variants of you just have a beautiful face? I mean, it’s kinda unfair—”). 

Some look like identical copies.

It’s… your timeline. 

Your friends in the Mutant war. Your Remy whose cards are scattered on the floor, blood in his hands, with you crumbling as you reach ou—

The Nine of Hearts in your pocket is impossibly heavy. You turn away to steel yourself. 

( “Yeah, okay, enough lore recap. Jesus, you guys are more of a dick than I am; Read the room and turn that shit off,” Wade chides a passing agent. He gets it. He’d lost Vanessa once, too, and he’s not quite sure even he can relive that pain. )

“Mais non, y’not makin’ no sense t’me,” Remy says, confused, “I’ve got memories; means I’ve got history jus’ like my Variants. How y’gon’ explain that?”

“Gaps of memories you have— knowledge of places, people, events— that comes from fixed synchronicities shared in your Temporal Aura across all your Multiversal Variants.” 

She’s met with slow, owlish blinks. Wade waves his hand in lazy dismissal.

“Forgive them. They didn’t watch Loki Season One or Two. Not that it matters, anyway. People barely understood what was going on.”

A sigh. “There’s no way to put this gently, Mr LeBeau,” B-15 concludes, tone dipping into something sympathetic. “But what I’m trying to say is that: you don’t have a Universe to go back to, because it never existed.”

She purses her lips as she catches his torn gaze. “I’m sorry.”

And that— That pisses you off.

“I’m… sorry?” you parrot, stepping forward. “That’s all you can say after everything that’s happened to us? His existence began with the Void, and my Universe was pruned by your agents. Innocent lives gone because your people decided they wanted to play God once upon a damn time—!” 

“Pump the hate breaks, you stray,” Wade calls. "Why'd you think I brought the both of you here?"

You reluctantly withdraw.

“I can’t bring you home,” B-15 supplies, matter-of-fact. “But I can find a compatible timeline for you. For both of you. A safe do-over, if you will.”

Wade’s smile is coy.

The ‘Merc with a mouth’ has a home surprisingly… cozy.

Albeit a little tumbledown and messy with its wallpaper-torn brick walls and creaking hardwood floors— but, it’s charming. Lived in. He has a life here in this rickety two-bedroom apartment; framed photographs of friends and snatches of livelihood sit across dressers and are pasted against his magnet-crowded refrigerator.

Reminds you abit of your home, too.

“Listen,” chirps Wade’s voice, somewhere down the short hall to his room. “My advice? Save yourself the identity crisis and brain aneurysm. All this multiversal horse-crap was created just so that Marvel can write themselves out of any corner. Just sit there and be sexy for the readers, okay, Magic Mike?”

You’re halfway towards them when the doorbell rings. 

“Ooh! That must be the pizza I ordered. Or Blind Al. Or Logan.” Wade pops out to sidle past you with a wink and a whispered: “Who knows, really? This is just the part of the story where I conveniently disappear so you and Cajun Tatum here can share a moment.”

You don’t quite understand— but you’ve learned to not bother attempting when it comes to him.

Your knock is soft against the doorframe. 

“Hey.”

Beside a lone corner of the bed, Remy turns to look over his shoulder. 

He’s fresh out the shower— faded towel tied around his waist, brown hair still damp and dripping water down his bare chest. His old clothes have been draped over a desk chair. 

You try not to stare, but—

But. 

He’s handsome. Devilishly so, with the bruises sweeping across the flex of all his stupidly lean, corded muscles.

You always had a thing for roguish-looking men.

“Hi,” he says, knowingly. ( It’s a dulcet croon, if anything. Cheeky bastard. ) “Y’okay? Got y’self cleaned up.”

Remy watches you gather yourself with a quick clear of your throat, pull at the sleeves of the scratchy hoodie you’re now wearing that’s practically swallowing you whole. 

You look rested. At ease. 

…Pretty.

“Yeah. Showered. We don’t smell like ass anymore, that’s for sure,” you say, making a face.

And then you’re nodding over to the black-and-blue contusions blooming over his skin. “You know, I’m sure there’s something frozen in the icebox for that.”

“Icebox?” 

You smile. “Yeah, that’s what you guys call it in Louisiana, right?”

“That we do, chèr,” he laughs. But it’s ducked down, quiet. Thin. “ ‘Least, I think so.”

You follow his downcast eyes to a small stack of folders— TVA files he easily thieved (unsurprisingly) from under their noses the moment he stepped foot into the room. 

He’d skimmed the manila dossiers: Absolute Points. Anchor Beings. Variant Anomalies. Some names he’d recognised and some he didn’t, most stamped or blacklisted. 

Pietro Maximoff. Edward Brock. Loki Laufeyson. 

Remy LeBeau.

Some part of you crumples. It’s one thing to not be able to return to a Universe, and another to not have even had one. 

“S’funny,” he chuckles dryly, picking his casefile up with a distant look, “My memories… I thought I’d done gon’ left a whole life behind me the entire time I been stuck in the Void— Friends. Family. An’ turns out the Void’s all I had.”

“Feels like…” he shrugs. Tries to piece his unmoored thoughts into something more cohesive. He’s never felt so horrifically adrift his entire life— whatever ‘entire life’ could mean for him now, anyway— not even when he'd been marooned in the barren wastelands of the Void.

 “Feels like I ain’t real. Hell, I don’t know what is real, anymore, chèr. I don’t— I just don’t know. I don't know anythin'."

You shake your head in disagreement nigh instantly. 

“No, no.” Pushing off the doorway, you cross the threshold with gentle admonishment lanced over your features. “You’re here. You are real.” 

The room is small. The distance you share is… close. Just enough that you catch the scent of peppermint toothpaste and coconut shampoo; Just enough that you can slide the documents out of his hands.

His fingers brush against yours. 

He wonders if you’d felt the kinetic trill of energy run through him at the contact.

“Can I be honest, Remy?”

You look up at him. 

“Mais oui, chèr. Y’can always be honest wit’ Gambit.”

You wave your hand at the TVA files. “I’m scared as shit being in a new Universe,” you blurt, truthfully. “This second chance means… a new life. New path. New everything. I don’t know what that’s like either and frankly, I am not prepared for this at all.”

You pause for a breath. “But for what it’s worth? I’m glad that you’re here. That’s… That’s about the only thing that I know.”

Then, as if dwarfed by the sheer vulnerability in your words, you take an awkward step back as you shrug. “And if you don’t feel the same, well. You and I, we’ll just have to make do, regardless.”

The sudden retreat is painfully endearing. Has him letting out a bright laugh that warms something nestled deep in your ribs.

“I’m glad I got you too, chèr,” he grins. 

“Yeah?” You flash a smile, having found your way back to the door.

Remy’s eyes fall to your face— tarrying. He follows the flutter of your lashes, the slope of your cheek, the curl of your lips. 

“…Yeah.”

Your idling, fond gaze sears him like a low-grade fever. 

The thrum buzzes in hands, again.

Your Gambit really was blind, he thinks, just as you slip away and disappear around the corner.

His palm flexes open, and shut.

An intro to enneagram 5

Beth Harmon (Queens Gambit) INTJ 5w4 so/sp 

Core Desire (Exploration of the Mind)- They crave knowledge and understanding of the world around them. 

Vice (Avarice)-They will cling to things (Not necessarily material) and keep them guarded in order to feel a sense of comfort. 

Fixation (Miser)- Will hide away their knowledge and general understanding of things due to feeling like it doesn't give as much result as it takes to share it. 

Wings 

5w4 (The Philosopher)- With the w4 they become more interested in metaphysical constructs and imaginative processes. Interested in the aesthetic and symbolic representation of things. Might be more introverted possibly a bit more on the intense side. Emotionally inaccessible while maintaining a level of intesity. But due to being a withdrawn type and a rejection type all of this emotional intensity is purely internal. 

5w6 (The Troubleshooter)- While the 5w4 will focus on metaphysical constructs and the understanding of the metaphysics on knowledge the 5w6 will be more interested in the  categorization of this knowledge. Will be more practical than then 5w4. More likely to be interested in the applicability of this knowledge in the outer world. Due to their interest in practicality they are gonna be more interested in methodical processes than imaginative ones.

Social (so)- The social 5 focuses on sharing their knowledge to others they want to expand on information. This subtype will use the knowledge and sharing it in order to keep themselves from feeling. They are more on the social side due to them wanting to share the knowledge they have gained in their life. They are extremely driven, social and competitive. Due to this qualities they can look like 3s and 7s.

They can be more sensitive than the other 5s and due to this they'll look like 4s while still being a 5 at their core.

Blake's costumes, rated

Every time I do one of these, someone asks me for another one. So... I guess I'm doing the set?

Here are my thoughts on Blake's costumes in Blake's 7. Get ready for a whole lot of brown. Screengrabs from here (they prefer their images copied, not linked) and record of what Blake wears when from here. Here's the same for Avon, Servalan and Jenna.

As seen in The Way Back, Space Fall, Cygnus Alpha, and Time Squad.

This is Blake in his normal, pre-Liberator clothes, and wow are they boring. This is clearly a man who was waiting for any opportunity to cut loose. Look how small his sleeves are! This isn't the clothing of a freedom fighter; it looks like the uniform of a handyman at an eco-friendly adventure park. It's not really Blake at all. 3/10.

As seen in The Web, Seek-Locate-Destroy, Mission to Destiny, Duel, Project Avalon, Breakdown, Deliverance, and Orac.

I was going to say that this is a long time to be wearing the same outfit, but at a closer look, Blake does change his shirt. Thank goodness, because the question of who does the laundry on the Liberator has bothered me before, and I didn't like to think of Blake being stinky for most of series A.

Also, this is a great outfit. I feel like the way it has four different elements and textures should be too much, but it's working for me, particularly the chainmail-esque sleeve detail. 8/10.

Jenna made the pink version of this look cool; Blake looks like a dad in a National Trust car park. There might be poo bags for the family Labrador in one of his many pockets. Honestly, kudos to the Blake's 7 costume designers for this one: obviously functional and yet perfectly of a piece with the more ridiculous outfits in the series. I don't love to look at it but I have to admire it. 6/10.

As seen in Redemption, Shadow, Horizon, and Killer.

In which Blake appears to be wearing an entire cow. Honestly, I love this outfit, from the sleeves to the boots. It's Romantic hero meets Robin Hood, it's ridiculous, it's wonderful. Gareth Thomas must have been so warm. 15/10.

As seen in Shadow, and Voice From the Past.

I got a telling-off in the notes on my Jenna post for not including her in the karate ghi. So let the record stand that I approve of the karate ghi universally for Blake's 7 characters. I particularly appreciate that Avon and Jenna have theirs fastened up, while Blake's is open halfway to his midriff. Quarry chic, you can't beat it. 8/10.

As seen in Weapon, Pressure Point, Trial, Countdown, and Voice From the Past.

This feels to me like the classic Blake outfit. It's like Avon's bajillion studded black leather jackets: green leather and bishop's sleeves are simply what Blakes in their natural environment should wear. But it's not quite as batshit as some of his other outfits and so I can't love it quite as much. 7/10.

As seen in Horizon.

I accept that I'm straining the definition of "outfit" here but come on, I couldn't not include this moment. I love the artfully placed grime; I love the way, it being the 70s, that Blake's trousers come up to his navel; I love the fact that this is, to the best of my recollection, the one and only scene of someone taking their top off in the whole of Blake's 7. 10/10.

As seen in Horizon.

The Romantic hero look is BACK. Here Blake is starring as a rebel version of Colin Firth's Mr Darcy. Get this man a lake to jump in. It is my firm belief that no man has yet existed who doesn't look good in this kind of shirt, and Gareth Thomas is no exception. 9/10.

As seen in Hostage.

This is one of those "who wore it best?" moments and I have to be honest and say: Avon did. The rule that Avon should wear tight things, preferably leather, and Blake should wear loose things, preferably with massive sleeves, is not being disproven here. 4/10.

As seen in Hostage, Gambit, The Keeper, and Star One.

There's just too much stuff going on here. The chainmail effect outfit was also quite busy but in a way that made Blake look bigger and bolder. This is the opposite; he looks almost smothered by it. There's a lot of fabric around his neck. It's brown and there's leather, but Blake doesn't look at home. 4/10.

Normally I rate these costumes based partly on how good they look, and partly on how well I feel they suit the character, and normally those two things are in alignment and it's all good. But here, I'm so torn.

Blake looks like shit. He's wearing some kind of horrific quilted knee-length gilet like a cross between a knight and someone who spends too much money in Jack Wills. It's too big for him and the little grab-handles on the front are... well, they're not very functional without Avon around to be grabbing him, are they? But on the other hand, it would be really weird if he looked good at this point in his story. The costume designers have judged this perfectly, and I hate it. 5/10.

Profiles in Villainy

The Core/Dark Marcy

The Core was a biomechanical, artificially transplanted collective of minds created to guide the undersea kingdom of Amphibia. It was created long ago from an amalgamation of the smartest minds from across Amphibia's history. The Core lived under Newtopia Castle in a secret basement in wait for the day when the Calamity Box was returned to Amphibia. All the while, The Core acted as the hidden power behind the Newtopia crown.

After centuries in dormancy, the Calamity Box finally presented itself when the Warriors of Prophecy arrived in Amphibia, who were destined to end the Core. Upon this discovery, the Core sought to reclaim the Box and undo the prophecy by having its conscience transported to Marcy's body through a helmet, leaving the deactivated mechanical body behind and creating a new identity, Darcy. With one of the warriors as its host, the Core regained control of Newtopia, and launched an invasion campaign on Earth as it planned to a millennium ago.

During the invasion, Marcy was freed from the Core's influence after Sasha used her sword to sever the cord connected to Darcy's helmet. However, the Core managed to survive inside Darcy's helmet and escaped.

After making its escape, the Core ended up initiating its final gambit by connecting to Amphibia's moon and setting a collision course with said planet. Though the Calamity Trio used their powers to destroy the Core's drones, it was not enough to stop it, with Anne ending up absorbing Sasha and Marcy's gems to shoot a powerful blast that destroyed the moon and the Core, ending its reign of terror for good.

Actress Haley Tju provided the voice of Marcy as well as Darcy.  The villain first appeared in the fourteenth episode of the second season of Amphibia, airing on March 20th, 2021.

What hot ones with Ryan and Hugh it's hilarious.

Gambit is hilarious. Weirdly I'm glad he was never in the live action that way. He did the voice well and Channing is having so much fun the last couple movies. His spot in bullet train gets me every time.

I cringed a lot at some of what Deadpool would say like omg stop.

Laura was perfect. Same character but grown, a little closer to the books plus she needed more screen time. Like I would have loved to have seen her reactions to watching Logan drink and piss on Deadpool's parade. But otherwise perfect.

Them at the end was chefs kiss.

Blade and Electra. Perfect epic. So funny.

Baby pool was weird. So was kid pool. Loved seeing all the different pools. Omg I just realized his arms were growing back ew. Hehheh nice pools hair and then him tonguing the dog. Ew.

I love the two fight scenes with them. Great music choice. The coexist was hilarious. That is more seat belts than are in that van. Aw flash back to picking up the picture.

Um question for Hugh what is in the bottles. I figured the clear is water. But what's the whiskey and do you have a preference.

Omg I don't know how much of it was prop and how much was cg but Logan skeleton when he was taking to it at the beginning too good.

Speaking of props, Happy's office. All the little props from all the different places. Like epic.

Omg me darcy is the sharming tva bad guy, like lol.

Nova's hands are the worst CGI in the movie and whatever practical they did to the actors hands the rest of the time why. Just made it worse.

Nova is a good character, I actually felt bad for her for a second and then she put her hand out of people's nose and I was done. Also epic walk.

I dug all the cameos actual or just fourth wall breaks, nice.

I have the soundtrack stuck in my head. Yay.

She only has like three lines, and I'm not sure what he voice really sounds like since I've only seen like two things with her, but the credits say that ladypool is Blake. Which duh, ts is too short. Love ya but short.

Shawarma. Yeah saw that. Blind al wishing she was deaf. Them literally being outside his apartment the whole time. Tva lady being hot for Peter over topless Hugh, hilarious. I need a short with them.

All the very male gaze of Hugh shirtless with the mask. Woof. That was not female gaze. Nope full male gaze. Which even if he does more as wolverine is probably like a fair well to that level of muscle since Hugh has said its part of why he was getting out, that level of work out and etc to look like that is bad and not fun. So understandable.

Amphibia AU

I'm gonna write about some of the ideas I thought up for this, and what generally happens plot-wise so I have somewhere to point to in case anypony asks what the deal is with these drawings I've been making. It'll be a big text wall, so, be warned:

The divergence point happens in season 3 (with maybe the exception of True Colors and Marcy not being stabbed, instead she's incapacitated in some other way), with Anne spending more time working with the resistance against Andrias. She meets with Mother Olm and gets guidance/training on better harnessing her calamity powers (the mossmen are hiding with the Olms and they help Anne out on this).

Some time after, there's a full battle between the resistance and Andrias + Frobos. This is it, a final push to save Amphibia, Anne's throwing hands with Andrias, everyone's giving it their all. But, in the thick of battle, Darcy shows up; she says that Andrias is a failure, and that from here on out, she'll be assuming direct control. The red moon opens its eyes. The Core's cambrian robots swarm the landscape, forcing the resistance to retreat. Andrias chases after Darcy.

Meanwhile, Marcy, partially amnesiac, is exploring the mental palace of the Core, interacting with its various personalities. She picks up on the situation outside from what she can gleam of far-away discussions. She finds out that several members of ancient newtopian royalty are leaving the Core to inhabit drone bodies of their own, claiming things like "an alien infant's body is a disgraceful host for someone as noble as me!" Those very same drones are summarily destroyed by the resistance.

Marcy realizes that she could use the same process to transfer herself into a small scouting drone to aid her friends on defeating the Core; though not without notice from the Core itself, which allows her to do so in order to get a fix on the resistance's location.

On the resistance's side, they stumble into Andrias and what remains of the Frobo army, still under his direct command. He's battered and injured, but after an initial scuffle he joins their ranks. A while later, Drone!Marcy finds them. The Core has them captured soon after that.

A great fight breaks out, but the girls are captured while the resistance scatters. Taken to the castle, they manage to break free, and rescue Marcy as well! But as they escape, Marcy catches a glimpse of herself in a tank. Unsure if she's the real Marcy or some kind of clone decoy, she joins the resistance, now regrouped on the remains of Toad Tower.

Now with (a still injured from True Colors) Marcy, the trio decides to pay a second visit to Mother Olm, to treat Marcy's injuries, and to confirm if she really is the real Marcy (she is, obviously). Now, all 3 girls can tap into their calamity powers! And right on time, because they'll need it.

The Core really starts to feel the heat around this point. Many former newtopian nobles went and blew themselves up thinking they were so much better than the resistance, those that remain understand that they're going to lose if this keeps up. Hell, they lost Marcy, and with all 3 girls under the Olms' guidance, they're starting to siphon away power from the music box! At this rate, they'll win without having to lift a finger!

In this desperation, the Core decides to let go of everything it once stood for, and for the sake of survival it merges all its personalities into one terrifyingly powerful intelligence. With the clone of Marcy primed and ready, this "Darcy Prime" recalls all the cambrian drones. The castle rises higher and higher into the sky. In this silence, the resistance finds out Darcy's final gambit: To use the Calamity Box to phase the Core moon out of Amphibia's universe and into Earth's.

Thanks to the girls siphoning power out of the box, the process is slowed, but not halted. They make their way to the castle while most of the resistance helps the population deal with the natural disasters that the moon's phasing is causing. There, the trio (+ Andrias & Frobots, for dealing with the drones) makes its final stand against Darcy.

The girls manage to overwhelm and defeat Darcy with a combined attack, and in stopping the teleportation sequence in the middle, the moon is in neither universe, and phases out of existence completely.

The girls safely retrieve the magic box, now sworn to be protected and never used for evil. The girls leave Amphibia, with a chance to return if they ever choose to, and hailed as heroes.

In broad strokes, that's it! That's the general outline for this AU that I made up, prone to change of course.

I’m very happy with my year in reading. I hit my new year’s goal of 52 books finished. And I read a lot of things that I really fucking loved. Lots of robots. LOTS of scifi/fantasy sapphics which I am SO happy about. Some good horror, some good fucky “romances”. A lot of things written in response to the Trump era or written during 2020 lockdown.

I also enjoyed partaking in online book fandom for the first time in possibly ever! Especially Murderbot fandom, which is very active and creative and lovely.

"Having seen some of your personal wardrobe changes over the years, that does seem like a fairly accurate summary of your fashion choices." In the supermarket, Darcy holds the small arm basket with the purchase choices made by Remy; since she has no culinary skills and he possesses all of them, this seemed, to her, like a fair trade-off. And if people looked at them weird, well, that was a bonus. Friend dinners between them were something Darcy had begun to look forward to more and more often since she'd somehow stumbled into his life. Doesn't hurt the man could make a good vegetable.

She casts her eyes away from the tabloid, and, on it's cover, an older photo of Gambit in monotone shades of gray, black, silver. It's not the him that she knows, and she doesn't feel bold enough to ask him further about it. He's not afraid to scold her when she treats him like a dog -- and she respects him enough to listen, something not afforded to many other men. Weird, that the rats in the tabloid industry would be digging it up now of all times.

Lack of Critical Thinking and Reading Comprehension in Fandom

I'm not the first person to write about this, but something happened over the weekend that finally hit at some part of me that just had me boiling over out of this weird rage and incredulity.

And I'm probably not going to be very kind, but I am going to try and be coherent about this because it's something that weighs heavily on me and makes me feel like a Boomer or something when it comes to the younger generation of fans (though not just the younger generation; I've seen older fans perpetuate this nonsense too, but it seems to be most prevalent in the newer gens).

So, full disclosure, I firmly believe that we, as a society, have waaaaay too much access to Creators--writers of shows, movies, comics, producers, directors, actors, etc. I don't think it's a good thing that we can just pop onto Twitter and ask writers or actors to confirm or deny headcanons. In fact, I think it's absolutely bonkers that anyone would feel that entitled.

It bothers me because on some level, it's people begging the creator of a thing to basically tell them how to think. Like...they're so scared of coming up with a single headcanon that, God forbid, is at odds with canon.

The particular example I'm going to use is the thing that set me off.

One of the most recent issues of one of the newer X-men titles has a scene where Rogue, Gambit, and Wolverine defeat a dragon; in the aftermath, Rogue happily jumps on Gambit, her husband, and says something to the effect of 'I'm gonna kiss my man, and if you don't like it you can look away...or don't, I don't really care,' and Wolverine is scratching his head like 'Where's my bike,' or something like that.

Now, just looking at the picture drawn and the words written, you can very obviously take this interaction at face value: Rogue wants to make out with her husband and she doesn't really care who sees.

However.

The way people flocked in droves to Twitter, to ask the writer of the comic if she intended for Rogue to sound like she was propositioning a threesome with Wolverine by not radically and firmly telling him to look away....it broke something inside of me. For the record, the writer was like 'Yeah that wasn't what I meant at all, I just meant that Rogue wants to kiss her man and she doesn't care who sees.'

But like...so fucking what?

Again, not to be a big fucking Boomer over this but like...back in my day, if we had even the inkling of a thought that a very obvious scene might have been hinting at something more, we called that 'subtext' and we made these nifty things called 'headcanons' and we either subscribed to them or didn't, and we went about our day.

But it feels to me like now, people are terrified of misinterpreting text. Like they don't want to have the wrong idea about a thing--and yes, this ties very much into purity culture and I'm gonna get to that in a fuckin' minute, but right now it's like this fandom-wide inability for people to read something on their own and come to their own conclusions, prompting them to belly crawl into the writer's DMs to beg for enlightenment.

I have a degree in literature. Every single class was spent dissecting books and discussing themes and then trying to make connections. The best of my professors gave us so much leeway when it came to writing papers and told us that we could write about how Jane Austen intended her readers to associate Darcy with the rise of the capitalist empire and Elizabeth was supposed to represent the underprivileged worker vying for union's rights, as long as we could make a compelling argument from the source text.

Like...does the younger generation of fandom not do that anymore? Is this part of a larger problem in fandom, tying back in to purity culture, where the only True and Good thing is the canon text, and everything that doesn't follow canon to the letter is an aberration?

I had a disturbing interaction on the X-men subreddit (rookie mistake #1: reddit is a cesspool) a while back where I commented on a post about the new X-men '97 show and said something about how I really enjoyed the drama of the love triangle between Rogue, Magneto, and Gambit, and how I could totally understand why Rogue was into Magneto, because he's drawn as a kickass silver fox of a man with a tight ass body and gorgeous flowing locks.

And friends, you'd think that I had just stepped up on a pedestal with a megaphone, wearing a sign, and defending pedophilia to the death. I immediately got called a weirdo and a creep for trying to 'normalize' unhealthy age gap relationships and as I tried to defend my stance (rookie mistake #2: never engage with antis, just block and move on), I realized that the person I was arguing with had never had an original thought in their life. Somehow the education failed them, and was failing the rest of the youth.

They cited how one of the writers of the popular Age of Apocalypse comic event had said something about how he didn't like the direction parts of the story took, but he was only one of the writers and that's just, like, his opinion, man. I keep seeing the way this person insisted that loads of people didn't like certain details of the comic (namely Rogue and Magneto get married and have a child together), and therefore, because the majority didn't like it, it was Bad and therefore should be forgotten or ignored, and certainly shouldn't be replicated in newer material, ie X-men '97.

And it comes back to...why do you care what a writer thought about the comic or a show? Like...I don't know how to say this, but why does anyone give a damn so much about what the writers think when we're perfectly capable of forming our own headcanons and pushing our own narrative? Like why does their opinion matter and carry so much weight to the younger generation, to the point where they track writers and creators down to harangue them for The Truth behind a scene or a page? Come up with your own damn headcanon and move on with your life.

I hate how easily it is to access people who, before, you either had to find in person at comic book conventions, or sit down and handwrite a letter and put in an addressed envelope with a stamp, and then hope they weren't too busy to reply. It used to take effort.

Now all it takes is the click of a button and you can beg your favorite writer to pretty pretty pretty please tell me what you meant by using this word instead of this word because I don't want to think the wrong thing because what if it's BAD and people make fun of me or harass me for being wrong.

Because some fans will harass others just for having a different opinion; this isn't a new or novel phenomenon, this has been ongoing since I was a teenager. The only difference is people's capacity for being shitheads is now amplified by the power of internet anonymity and the Fandom Purity Police or whatever. New fans are so terrified of having a single thought that contradicts the majority take on a character interaction that they have to go and annoy the writer to beg for an answer to a question that should have never existed.

What should happen in these instances, is you, as a fan, should ask yourself: Do I want Rogue to have been lowkey propositioning Wolverine for a threesome? The answer can be yes or no; if it's no, then you take the text at face value and don't think anymore of it...but if it's 'yes', then you call that a headcanon, you tuck that inside of you, or you make a post and then start looking for fanart and fanfic.

All that to say, please stop pathetically begging creators to tell you what to think.

Please exercise your brain and come up with your own thoughts.
