If Arthur had been so kind before to draw you, why couldn't you return the favour? Plus you never really cared for fishing all that much, you just liked being in the same space as Arthur, breathing the same air, and sharing the perfect silence with a unstressed breeze between you two. And maybe you treated this as an excuse to look at Arthur a little closer than you usually would, admire the finer details of his roughened face. The small scar on his cheek that you never truly figured out the origins of, the small strand of hair that without fault would always end up against his forehead, the bags on his eyes that if they were on anyone else that you wouldn't find too appealing but just because it's on Arthur, your Arthur, its one of those imperfections that turns perfect. His jaw is practically on the floor once you reveal the drawing to him, the details that you've captured in his face that he had only seen as flaws. He wasn't used to this, he was used to capturing the beauty around him, hiding the ugliness away from his drawings, the ugliness which he labelled as himself. Even with a beauty like you beside him he could never find himself all that appealing to look at, let alone put in the work in drawing. He felt flattered thought hat you would take the time to draw him, he knows he's returned the favour more than enough times. Her eyes glancing at you as if its some kind of joke but when she sees your serious, she just shrugs it off and keeps working. She comments that she isn't gonna just sit still for an hour while you draw, she's a busy woman who has work to get done and you understand that. Hoping to get her drawing done quick but with the details you keep getting glimpses of when you pull your vision from the paper to her face make you realise how much more work you'll have to do to get it perfect. But inside, what you don't see, is that Sadie really does care at the idea of her drawing, especially from you. She's always been a secret fan of your little hobby, it was nice to have something that brought you such comfort and calm, she really wished she had something like that before she met you but now she had you, even if she tried to look all tough, she was truly as lovesick as she used to be with her now deceased husband that she is with you. When your eyes aren't on her, she's fixing her hair or clothes, just making sure that you get the best details of her. She doesn't want to look like an outlaw, she wants to look like a normal woman even if she is far from that now. She wants to look normal for you, the contrast between you two was so obvious to her. She could shoot twelve men and not even miss a wink of sleep while you couldn't even shoot a squirrel when you went out hunting with her. She enjoyed your kind heart though, it made her not feel so monsterous for what she's done and all the people she's hurt. She's very patient truly when you need more time to finish, even if before she told you that she wasn't gonna sit still. She knows how much you took pride and patience in your work, she wanted to make sure that your needs were met. And it paid off because when she finally does see the drawing, her heart has swelled holding the leather back journal as she admires your work. She had truly forgotten what she had looked like when she wasn't covered in dirt and blood, the inner beauty of her that you captured physically on the drawing, she just loved you a little more.

"Are you interested in a more intimate portrait?" Don't get me wrong, he is very flattered that you want to sketch him but he has to tease, giving you that sly smirk on his lips while he leans against the tree, his guitar in his lap and you sitting across from him. He sits confidently, trying to get a peak at your work every now and again, making comments at you that almost distract you from your drawing with how much they make your heart flutter. He gives you ideas for the drawing, like how he could look good on his horse, or fighting Micah, anything that makes him look like your personal hero that you already know he is. When you sometimes look up at him, he sends you a quick wink, chuckled at your flustered cheeks and quick change of focus back onto your paper. As much as Javier is teasing and trying to distract you from the work, he has full intentions of sitting right under the tree in the scorching heat until your work would be done to perfection. If you were more than happy to sit with him while he lazily strummed on his guitar, he could be considerate enough to enjoy his time with you while you work on your own hobby. He isn't exactly patient so eventually he leaves his spot, scooting over to you as he rests his chin on your shoulder, looking at your work. His eyes are glued to your fingers which pinch your pencil and move in little scritch scratches on the finer details of his mustache. Careful to keep the strings of his guitar as straight as possible even if there's a little wonky bit every here and now. He thinks it's adorable how focused you are, your eyes glued to the sheet and your tongue sticking out of your mouth every now and again as you concentrate on the proper shading, rubbing your thumb against the paper to smudge the ink

"I'm nothing special" It makes you frown to hear him say such a thing, turning his back to you when he continues on his chores, not wanting to be a burden to you. Not that he ever was, Kieran was the perfect medium between fantasy and realism. He was perfect to you, since the day you met him in Colter. Sneaking him food when everyone was asleep, on the coldest days when the wind blew harder with every second that burned your exposed skin but it had been worth it to see the small smile on his face when he knew at least there was someone who cared for him. Not many people had ever cared for him, his ma died young and his pa not long after her. He had been alone, every time he met one they would disappear or die around him. Possibly that's why it took so long for him to warm up to you, his fear that the next good thing in his life was gonna disappear. But you refused to take his no or fear for an answer, proving him time and time again that you didn't plan to go anywhere. Even if he would push and push you away, you held on like a tick on a dog, of course a bit more benefitial than a tick for a dog. And maybe it takes a little bit of forcing to get him to just sit down, relax and let you show him that he is a lot more perfect than he thinks so. He's stiff, constantly trying to find an excuse to escape your eyes on him as you concentrate on capturing his finer details. He's fixing his hat to hide his face until you rip the hat away from him, practically begging him to just let you do this and show him in your own eyes, your vision of how perfect the squirmy shy and anxious boy sitting under the tree with you truly is. Once you're finished he's so happy that he has something made by someone only for him, something that he is able to cherish. Even if he will still have his self esteem issues, he will always have his physical representation of the love from his little artist.

idk if you’ve talked about this already but what do you think the name of John and Abigail’s daughter was?

Ironically, at some point I was gonna ask this as a general question bc it's something I'll have to include in my fic later on.

Susanna seems to be a relatively popular hc. It's after the song John sings in the epilogue and also the name of John and Abigail Adams' (who all the marstons names are inspired by) deceased daughter. I like this one, but I'm pretty sure there are already fics out there that use it so I don't wanna copy that.

There are some Arthur related ones, but I really dislike those. I don't think John, who can't even talk ab Arthur, would name his daughter something like Morgan or Artis. I like to think Abigail gave her the middle name Beatrice to honor Arthur indirectly though.

Sorry I didn't really answer ur question lol. But if anyone has any hcs for the marston daughters name I could use in my fic PLEASE lmk bc I can't think of any.

Fate/Dread

 I love a lot of Fate fan AUs so I had the courage to mention my own for a bit. Don’t really have the confidence for a full fic, so I’ll just mention the main ideas.

>Story is a prequel to the main Extraverse games (Extra, CCC, Extella, Extella Link)

>It is the Extraverse’s version of the Fifth Fuyuki Grail War, called the Terminus Grail War here as it is the last possible war to exist on earth with the quickly drying up mana

>Due to this, the greater grail was meddled with further, allowing for more Master/Servant spots to open up, akin to Apocrypha. So instead of just 7 servants (8 counting Angra Mainyuu, there are now 16. A second of all the main 7 class, plus an extra class)

> The original Hakuno is the protagonist. She is the most recent of a long line of continuous Morgan le Fay reincarnations throughout the decades akin to a fairy replacing another fairy in terms of “role” in LB6.

>Her family, the Kishinamis, broke off from those in the Blackmore Cemetary decades ago, and lived peacefully away from civilization with the role of preserving artifacts from Arthurian legend. Hakuno’s parents are deceased and she is left the last of her family.

>In classic Hakuno, fashion, she starts catching feelings for Rin the closer the two get but is aware Rin the head of the Tohsakas, meaning they’ll be forced to become enemies once the war starts. This becomes one of her main conflicts as she’d accepted she’d have to kill to survive long ago, but not to kill someone she’s close with. 

>This leads her to use the “Morgause” persona once the war starts in a Lelouch/Zero sort of fashion. Later in the story, she’d be forcibly unmasked by Rin, in a similar, dramatic way.

>Story would also have Shirou as a secondary protag, expanding on his relationship with Artoria, and his journey to eventually becoming Nameless once Extra rolls around.

>Hakuno would immediately realize Shirou has Avalon and his servant is basically her childhood hero in King Arthur, causing more inner turmoil.

>As for Hakuno’s own servant, I’m not sure yet. I’ve thought of multiple ideas such as Nobunaga, Billy the Kid, Enkidu, Edmond Dantes, Daji/Tamamo, Berserker Lancelot, etc. but haven’t decided yet.

Hey Lia, just want to stop by and say I really enjoy your blog and analyses. I have a question for you - while it's clear Arthur still loves Mary despite the passage of time, do you think he was ever attracted to Abigail? Either in a sexual sense or as a symbol of what he could do over (wrt to Eliza and Isaac). His journal shows he toyed with the idea of marrying her. While he didn't act on it I don't believe Arthur would consider marriage lightly, given his sense of loyalty.

Hey I'm sorry I took a while to answer this. I just have to put a huge disclaimer and explain why I procrastinated answering this ask and why this particular question (not your fault OP) exhausts me. So BIG disclaimer, I'm not blaming anon for a very valid question.

I first played Red Dead Redemption 1 in 2010. I've had this game seared into my brain and memory for 12 years. I actually love it more than RDR2 (despite RDR2 being the much better game) due to nostalgia and sentimental value. John was my favorite hero for a long time, and I avoided playing RDR2 because I heard about how they turned John into a deadbeat dad, and I had this impression of him from 20fucking10 that he was an amazing husband and father. I've sort of made peace with it. I love rdr2. I love Arthur more than I love John, and I appreciate John's arc in rdr2.

HOWEVER,

nothing. And I mean NOTHING can make me take any retcon or w/e seriously that detracts or devalues the bond and love between John and Abigail. They were the first real rockstar couple for me, and I'm pretty sure John and Abigail provide the blueprint you'll see for in later GTA games (I'm thinking GTA 5). I can't even take the notion of Abigail having a thing for Arthur too seriously, because to me, John and Abigail are UNSHAKEABLE. And for all the grief Arthur gives John for leaving the gang, he would never -- and I mean NEVER do that to his brother.

Okay lol now that I got that out of my system, let's go back to your question.

I consulted my friend in Arthur Morgan PhD studies @papaue00 for this. She knows by heart an interview with Roger Clark, where he confirms that there was supposed to be a storyline about a past romance between Abigail and Arthur, but it was ultimately scrapped.

So long story short, it's possible the mention of her in his journal and marriage is... probably a mistake? A part they meant to cut out but ultimately forgot or didn't, thinking it wasn't worth sacrificing everything else written in that entry just to erase a pretty valid sentiment.

I think you're right anon, that this is probably what it is: "a symbol of what he could do over" [wrt Eliza and Isaac]. He saw a mother and son in need of a man to step up as a father, and he probably considered (since he saw them as family) becoming that man out of concern for their welfare when it looked like John wasn't coming back. It's not an uncommon practice back in the day, as it was seen as a duty to fulfill, not unlike a foster-brother's version of a Levirate Marriage.

Here's a definition from Britanica:

levirate, custom or law decreeing that a widow should, or in rare cases must, marry her dead husband’s brother. The term comes from the Latin levir, meaning “husband’s brother.” The “brother” may be a biological sibling of the deceased or a person who is socially classified as such. Where the brother is required to be younger than the deceased, the custom is called the junior levirate. The levirate often co-occurs with the sororate, a practice in which a widower should or must marry his dead wife’s sister.

Often, the brother who marries his former sister-in-law is a proxy for the deceased, in which case all progeny of the new marriage are socially acknowledged as the children of the dead man. For instance, in ancient Hebrew society, the levirate served to perpetuate the line of a man who died without offspring. Likewise, among the Nuer people of South Sudan, the children of a remarried widow belong to the first husband’s line, and they consider the deceased to be their father even if the new husband is their biological genitor.

I don't believe this was practiced in any real or prominent way in the 19th century, but in ancient times, it was definitely a thing. In fiction, I know a famous example is in the HBO Western mini-series, Deadwood. The main character, Seth Bullock was in love with the widow Mrs. Garrett, but he could not marry her because he was already in a Levirate marriage where he married his dead brother's wife before coming to the Deadwood settlement.

The messiness of such a strong cultural history has marked other characters in fiction, and it often deals with themes of protecting women or providing for women who are left vulnerable due to patriarchal society.

So yes anon, in a way I agree with you or at least that's how I read Arthur's consideration of marrying Abigail. I truly believe he felt John was his brother, and it was his duty to step in for John.

I really like the arthurian fisher king lens of viewing Batman, because it puts the characters - and Gotham - in such an interesting relationship to each other.

The king and queen of the realm worked hard during dark times to ease the pain of the people and raised the true heir of the throne to become a fair and just ruler, just like them. But, alas, tragedy struck and the young prince set out to forge his destiny not as the shining king or even White Knight destiny would have him as, but rather as a Dark Knight, tainted by the evil of the land and unable to lift his realm from it.

The True King and Queen: Thomas and Martha Wayne - deceased

The True Heir: Bruce Wayne, refusing the mantel. To all apperances an Unfit Ruler

The Dark Knight: Batman. (Stories that focus on the Fisher King aspect, i.e. that the state of Gotham is a reflection of the turmoil in his soul, likes to focus on the Dark part).

Side note: There are basically four sources of power in this kind of stories:

Legitimate Power ('only the true king can draw the sword from the stone'). This is the source of Bruce's power, and by extension the power lended to those loyal to him, like Alfred, the Robins and Jim. There is also a certain amount of hirearchy here, where even bad rulers of various levels have power just by being rulers such as the Court of Owls and sometimes the Penguin.

Ilegitimate Power. (like the pagan magic of Merlin or Morgan, contrasted with the Christian power of God-chosen king Arthur). Forrest Witch Poision Ivy as well as chemically altered super villains like Bane, Clayface and (in some stories) the Joker and Mr Freeze. Also 'real' magic users, ghosts, aliens and extradimensional imps.

Virtue Power (like in most medieval saint stories). Ordinary people who by the power of doing the right thing gets rewarded with power over the forces of evil (or at least gets to be martured in a cool way). This is the origin story of pretty much every Robin, as well as people like Leslie Thompkins and Vicki Vale.

Personal Badassery ('the strongest man in seven villages'). This is where we find people like the Riddler, Catwoman, the Joker, Harley Quinn and most of Batman's Rogues Gallery. Although these people can be formidable, the story format still places this power source as lesser than the other three.

With no fitting ruler on the throne, the realm falls into disarray. The Corrupt Nobles (Court of Owls) scheme in the shadows while The Barons - mobsters and gangs (including the police) - bicker for power (Note that Jim Gordon is here framed as a Good Baron, a feudal 'middle manager' that's still loyal to the True Ruler, even in his current form). The rabble - the superstitious, cowardly lot - fight against each other and their betters. Wandering knights create order or chaos wherever they go, each after their own creed.

There is a shining light in the darkness, though. A White Knight in the form of Harvey Dent who promises to stem the tide of darkness. Alas, evil corrupts him - without the power of his virtue he is left as just another squabbling baron.

And just as we have a 'false' white knight we have false rulers. People who would claim the mantle of the true king and queen or ursurp the power of the prince. Hugo Strange fits here, and the Penguin in some stories (the Tim Burton movie, for example).

An interesting example is Ra's al Ghul who qualifies as a Legitimate Lord in his own right - a Dark King. That puts Talia on equal footing with Bruce - a Dark Heir - but unlike him she has not deviated from her path. She offers him escape from his twisted fate, a restoration to his lost nobility, but his creed and obligation keeps him in his sundered kingdom.

This reading works best on Gotham/Batman-centric stories, where the larger DC universe is kept in the background. But I suppose Wonderwoman and Superman could be seen as fellow lords as well.

Oh, and the Joker? He's the fool, of course. In the Shakespearean meaning. The absurd mirror. The one who never leaves the rulers side. The one who speaks truths that no other dare to utter. The one who the ruler can never, ever silence or escape.

Jackson Morgan, also known as Jax, which he prefers to be called, was born and raised in Arizona to both Marsha and Daniel Morgan. Upon completion of school, Jax went to college for business management and later opened up his own gun shop called Morgan's Gun Shop and Repair. He later married Abigail Smith and had two sons, Joshua and Elijah.

After the outbreak, the family fled to a quarantine zone in Mexico that later fell due to being overrun by the dead. Due to his excellent skills and tactics, Jax was able to ensure his family safety while traveling across a desolate strip of the border between Mexico and the United States seeking a new life up North, until a group of undocumented workers captured and slaughtered his family for their cargo and supplies. Jax succumbed to a life of vigilance and revenge that he spent each waking day hunting and tracking down his family's killers to seek out his own redemption.

Being the lone vigilante, Jax made his way up north through Virginia with a group called The Hidden. This group was a highly trained operative in military tactics and strategies that have helped him survive and almost become hidden from the dead and living. Their leader, known as the Curator, admired Jax for his capabilities, giving him the duty of becoming a hitman/mercenary.
