3 Books Every Twenty-Something Should Read (By a Twenty-Something)
(In no particular order)
The Defining Decade by Dr. Meg Jay
This book has been my go-to for various points of my college (and now post-grad) career. Whenever I felt that I was "lost" or had a "mid-life crisis", this book always came to the rescue.
In this book, Meg Jay goes through how to best use your 20s. Whether that be through relationships, hobbies, education and career choices. She also expands on the concept of developing identity capital which is a collection of things that make you, you. One of my favourite quotes by Meg is, "“Twentysomething is like airplanes, planes just leaving New York City-bound somewhere west. Right after takeoff, a slight course change is a difference between landing in either Seattle or San Diego. But once a plane is nearly in San Diego, only a big detour will redirect it to the northwest.”
2. Quit Like a Millionaire by Bryce Leung and Kristy Shen
This is a personal finance book that details how a Canadian couple, Bryce and Kristy, retired in their thirties. Both working as software engineers, they sought to buy a home in Toronto but found that getting into the housing market was out of reach. Instead, they opted to use the money that could have gone towards a house into the stock market where they were both able to retire and travel the world.
Reading this opened my eyes to the various possibilities and routes to financial independence. One that isn't defeatist about the current housing market, but rather optimistic about other possibilities!
3. The Almanack of Naval Ravikant
The writer, Naval Ravikant, is the founder of various companies in Silicon Valley and wrote a guide to building wealth and emotional well-being unlike anything else I've seen. Most books I read surrounding generating wealth are pretty redundant, but what I found by reading this book was that everything written was unique yet so simple.

maddening that there is a common medical condition whose symptoms consist of massive long-term loss of mental and physical functions, due to the incredibly damaging effects of prolonged stress overextending the mind and body by pushing it into survival mode beyond endurance—and that there is no medical term for it. despite the fact it's so damn common that everyone knows of someone suffering from "burnout."
#not a shitpost#“know him? he's me!”#it'll take a couple decades but eventually the DSM will give us a shiny new acronym for it#i'm guessing it will be described as related-to-but-distinct from what we currently call c-ptsd. or maybe on the same spectrum#but defined more by chronic stress than chronic trauma (which is a tough distinction to define in fairness. there's much overlap)

i need everyone to know that in all versions of shuggy, they are divorced. 10 yr olds? divorced. cross guild era? divorced. buggy accidentally ate a devil fruit? divorced. shanks gives up on the one piece to tenderly care for his buggy? divorced like you wouldn't believe. loguetown? divorced². there is no iteration of shuggy that is not divorced. even when shanks was in that treasure chest and buggy was, idk, getting orphaned, they were divorced. in the womb they were divorced. and truly, that is what defines and makes up the core of all of their interactions, their divorceness.
#they're one of the most divorced ppl i know#they're at the marriage court every other week. the marines are sick and tired of processing the paper work#i mean also their inability to talk about their issues in a meaningful manner defines them#but even that is an aspect of their divorceness#nobody's ever done divorce like them and literally no ever will#fellas is it gay to have a 2 decade long situationship/divorce with an emperor of the sea?#is it gay to give up on your wants and dreams to make his come true?#is it gay to leave him heartbroken in the rain with his hand outstretched like he could still touch you?#one piece#shanks#buggy#shuggy#shanks one piece#red haired shanks#buggy the clown#buggy one piece#op

Still so iconic of Matt fraction to start his run like anyways off screen Clint and Kate who have met a few times before this run have become besties and are fundamentally now intertwined characters. Like and that’s just canon now. I think more comic writers should be willing to kinda just decide a new status quo like that especially with characters that have been under utilized
#and now it’s part of their characters that would seem really weird if changed#like they were on okay terms Clint and Kate were like we can both be Hawkeye that’s cool#but like that was it really unless I’ve misremembered#idk it’s just something I think about alot and like#that’s the fun of comics sometimes a run comes out of nowhere with new stuff that comes to define a character#it’s cool to see the medium like change and move and like be alive#having characters that get passed around to different writers over like decades and like almost a hundred year is so cool#and something you don’t see really that much out side of comics#like old folklore story cycles yes but like modern stuff#though with the obsessions with reboots that is changing but it’s still different#I’m just obsessed with that sort of shared cultural story telling I guess it#sound be surprising in retrospect I was obsessrd with comic books folklore mythology and fairytales as a kid#bc in a way they are the same#that’s all#maybe when I’m not taking a break getting distracted from writing a paper I’ll come back to these thoughts#and put them together in a more coherent way or expand on it more#but who knows man I feel like that doesn’t really happen but also I e been in law school hell for 3 years maybe things will change once#I graduate#anyways gotta go write#Hawkeye#hawkeye squared#kate bishop#clint barton#marvel#sometimes I feel bad about tagging my like stream of consciousness thoughts but also I want my blog to be functional for me to be able to#find stuff and like I tell myself people can scroll past it or use the block button fi I annoy them

trains :)
this is a very rough and scribbly comic, but sometimes that's all a comic is going to end up being lmao. the guy with the jacket is darren, glasses is andy. not featured, andy's dead brother who nevertheless insists on haunting the subtext
the main thing I wanted to draw was the train tho
bsky ⭐ pixiv ⭐ pillowfort ⭐ cohost ⭐ cara.app
#darren and andy's brother were best friends and darren was there when andy's brother died#and made a very normal promise to always look out for andy. unfortunately. it's a little. hmmmm. suffocating! a decade later!#not that darren's been looking after andy for ten years. they were on opposite ends of a fictional planet#but in the way that andy's in love with darren and would be fine with dramatic declarations of 'i have to keep you safe' if they were#not attached to his dead brother. like. if that's the only reason he gets to hear words like that he would like to Not Hear Them thanks!#also andy is an extremely dangerous person in his own right so it's also like. hmm. hmmmmm.#it's messy. the death of andy's brother defined darren in a kind of way so the prospect of having to re define himself#without the absence of andy's brother to shape that is Unpleasant to think about#thankfully they're both going to be stuck on this fucking train for a significant amount of time! for my enjoyment!!! its train time baby!#long post#komiks tag#original tag

For a character that has virtually said nothing (impressive feat considering Mark Berskii exists) and has been dead since the start, Cara is so SO intriguing to me. Her complete lack of humanity in the midst of a cast brimming with it stands out in such a fucked up way.
Take her appearance, for example. Outside of the fact that she's much paler than the group, her having redish hair feels so intentional. It physically ties her to two characters: Diana and Wolfgang's mum. By extension, that ties her to Wolfgang and Eva as well. I don't believe that she's directly tied to them, or anyone in our group really (which I think is the point). However, the links that can be tied-- that we as the audience are encouraged to tie-- still exist.
We are introduced to her as a murder victim, a girl who was brutally ambushed and stabbed to death by who is assumed to be a man. That serves as a parallel by what is implied to have happened to Wolfgang's mum; a woman who was murdered by her husband. Coupled with their vague resemblance, it explains why Wolfgang was so emotional during the trial. He's a lawyer, and it's both his job and moral code to have empathy for everyone, but it seems obvious that there was a lot of projection on his part related to this specific case. He doesn't just see a person, he sees a blameless woman, an innocent girl undeserving of her fate. A victim who had to have been sadistically murdered by a man, and "self-defence" was never on the table. He clearly cared about the case-- he cared THE MOST about the case. He was the only one to actually acknowledge that it's based on a real murder case, that the victim was a real person, and treat it with that same amount of appropriate care. But that care is rooted in his strong sense of justice for victims as a lawyer, in his own issues and warped view on gender due to his parents-- it's not entirely for her because he never actually KNEW her.
And we see her again in the execution. Quite literally like a puppet on strings, she mechanically reaches out towards Eva and offers her a hand. In my eyes, this is 100% a parallel to Diana. There's the obvious of a vaguely red haired girl being the only one to offer her support during her lowest moments, but the way Cara reaches to pull Eva up only for her to fall to her death is comparable to the way Diana reaches to pull Wolfgang up only for him to still get electrocuted to death. Here she is again, playing a different role, open to the interpretation of others. Here she is, twisting the knife about Eva's feelings about Diana. She looms over her, standing tall where Eva was at her lowest in every sense of the word. She's a girl offering help, but not out of the goodness of her heart, and the strings puppeteering her every movement emphasise that reality. Where Eva had rejected her advances before, in her desperation she actually reaches back for her, and the act of allowing herself to trust that kindness is what has her plummeting to her doom the way she was always of, the arm giving and tearing at the farce of it all.
Take her talent, for example. She's the Ultimate Teacher's Aide. By her very nature, she exists for the service of others. Uplifting others rather than uplifting herself. She's the Ultimate Teacher's Aide, and she fulfils that role by being Tozu's literal puppet in the killing game, her servitude entirely at his disposal and her autonomy nonexistant.
Take her motif, for example. She's the only character without an animal motif. Her motif, ironically enough, is a human. Two humans, in fact. And I think that's significant cuz we never actually learn anything about Cara herself when she appears. Her existence is always symbolically tied to someone else on appearance alone (Wolfgang's mum or Diana). Her motif is a human because it's the closest thing to what she looks like, but just like the Tree of Ignorance being a hollow imitation of the Tree of Wisdom, she's anything but. What do we know about her, really? What was she like? Was she a cheerful soul or a gloomy one? Was she aggressive or pacifistic? Was she someone who had confidence or none at all? Was she a perfect victim or a failed yet complicit perpetrator? The sad thing about that question is that it really doesn't matter. Her murder case is only proof of her existence that exists; history has taken this girl and reduced her to nothing else and it doesn't matter. In a group of individuals she's exists solely as a blank slate, a passive party, an entity they can project on. She's a girl. She's a victim. She's a doll. She's a reason. But make no mistake-- she was never meant to be a person.
(Cerise's made a great art piece on this idea go check it out!)
#project eden's garden#p:eg#p:eg spoilers#cara koskinen#wolfgang akire#eva tsunaka#diana venicia#weird callout but why are cara and wolfgang the only characters depicted with crowns in their imitation art#again i don't believe they're related or even know each other personally i just think about that sometimes#ironic about those two being depicted with an object that symbolises victory when they're both died in their respective killing games#difference being that wolfgang was the first victim whereas cara feels implied to have been the last#but anyway i was talking about this with people on discord a few weeks ago or something#but seeing that art piece finally pushed me to finish this cuz like yes. yes you get it#cara's role in the story is so so weird. the way we know NOTHING about her is so so weird#and that's why i stand by our cast not knowing her beforehand because it emphasises the way her existence is up to perspective#there's no “cara”. not anymore. she only exists as a vessel for them to project on as they wish. that's the curse of being a dead stranger#i guess there is some commentary to be made about how that's also the case in real life as well#where we as a society usually discuss famous criminals for decades after the names of their victims fade away much sooner than that#and victims of murders are usually reduced to just that. murder victims. that's what their whole life is most defined by in the end#not their hobbies. not their personalities. not their hopes and insecurities. not them as people. far more so for women too#i dunno. i'm just yapping about her because she fascinates me#shaking this girl in a jar as we speak WHO WERE YOU#momento rambles

Lucy: I heard that 'Marriage' is an excellent way to share financial burden. Given you have come under heavy burdens, would you like to partake in this with me, Ms. Simone?
Ms. Simone: ...
Everyone else at the cafeteria: ...
Woe, Simone/Lucy be upon thee
LUSIMONE 🙏🙏🙏🙏
Lucy would be the kind that 20 years after marriage she asks Simone to be her life partner. She genuinely thought all of this was to avoid taxes.
It has dawned on me that she called Simone poor/financially struggling and asked to marry her in the same breath. Icon.
#reverse 1999#defining sanity#LUSIMONE AAAAAA#i love these bitches sm#“Simone. It has come to my attention that we have been together for more than two decades. would you consider becoming my life partner?”#“Lucy we've been married for those two decades”#“Oh. I see”

love doing research on 1910s fashion for Edwin's outfit because it's broken into the Titanic era and the WW1 era, so you can really see how great things were going in England for those years
#to be fair it wasn't going great for him in those years either#it was obviously not called Titanic fashion at the time#they did not think of that as the historical touchstone of the era#but WW1 hit and they don't have a chance to do something else#it was the 1910s British empire and all fashion of the decade's names seem to be defined by tragedy#so I really don't want to see what else they could have come up with#edwin payne#dead boy detectives

ive been with this job for 5 years. i got a warning last year for calling out sick too much - but i get sick so often. i had a fever yesterday, i call out - today the boss gives me such funny long looks. avoids me when i try to talk. strikes convos only a handful of times. my co-manager's schedule has been shifted to cover my area if i were to be fired - i dont want to be. i dont like being sick. i hate that eventually everyone's sympathy runs dry. on wednesday i was so sick at the counter i accidentally knocked my drink onto the ground and didnt notice for about five seconds as it was gushing onto the mats. i just stared. i couldnt see what was in front of me. im finally arranging to have a proper primary doctor, but i think its too late.
the worst part is feeling apologetic about it all. i guess it comes from being raised in a guilt-riddled cult. im so stressed, the damn fever is back - no one's said anything to me, but when one of my co-managers was fired last year, no one said anything to him, either. i want to pretend im just being paranoid but i feel like im falling backwards in a smooth glass tunnel with nothing to cling to.
i have a little savings. i try to have enough for rent and utilities for a month, if this happened, but its not nearly enough for a normal person, i think. everyone else was acting normal, but they always act normal, because they're coworkers. im sensitive and like to think some of them are friends, but, im a little too dull to tell the difference sometimes.
im going to make myself sick with worry. i anxiety spiraled myself so hard the fever is back. and i wont even know until next week, after my weekend, what the verdict is. if there's any verdict. (i think there is. i think by next week i will be unemployed)
i like to think if i was on the chopping block, my boss would've told me today. but then again, he might've been waiting until the owners are in to hear their stance on it.
but there's nothing i can do but wait, and keep working what shifts i have. there's a pit in my stomach. i live in a small town and actually work in ANOTHER, richer town, to make ends meet. i dont want to be a liability. i want to be dependable. but my body is slowly falling apart around me, in such disgusting, concerning ways, i wish i could just inhabit a mannequin and keep going about my daily life without having to worry about being sick so often.
i kind of just want to cry. theres not a lot of joy in my life right now to begin with, and my job is all stress, but ive been there long enough that i got comfortable. i dont wanna leave. i dont want to have No Job, im scared of being adrift at sea, begging people for help. being homeless once makes me clam up at the thought of having no solid income. i can still remember the sensation of walking miles and miles on foot, in my house slippers, to get to a store, and rubbing my feet raw. i hated the sensation of living in free-fall.
i guess for other people its probably easier? fun, even? not being tied down to any job. i try not to define myself by my job but its hard when you spend all day every day at it.
i read that its sort of like... career grieving. im just sort of waiting for the final bullet. waiting for the bile in my stomach to stop churning. waiting for the noose to get cut. this is an anxiety filled ramble if you couldnt tell
#archi wheezes#anxiety rambling honestly#girls i think i am going to get fired#and it ends up ive been defining myself by my job for like half a decade oops#when u dont have a personality so u just fill the void with retail

can't wait for adaar to come back to cassandra after a decade of being best friends with dorian 'thedas' nr 1 mortaboo necrostan' pavus and then hanging out with a bunch of mourn watchers through all of veilguard and embracing her like 'I love and support you more than anyone in this world and whatever you needed from them that you didn't get I'll wrestle dragons and fight gods to give you now, my love, my lighthouse, my safest place to stand. but I must regretfully report that your folks fucking ROCK actually I think dorian was right about this one'
#their relationship has survived a decade of cass being a barely moderate conservative while adaar is the closest thing#you can get to a filthy commie in thedas beneath the realpolitik strategy. they'll weather this disagreement just fine too lol#you do find a memento in the grand necropolis that mentions cassandra being at her uncle's funeral which had me flailing like#MY GIRL!!! MY LITTLE GUY OBLIQUELY MENTIONED!!!! is she. y'know. a woman of some renown? 👀👀👀#rye and cassandra are for sure doing some kind of handshake meme over 'emotional damage that can happen#when you're a child being raised by well-meaning people who nevertheless spend most of their thoughts and time on sepulchers'#dragon age#dragon age: the veilguard#dragon age: the veilguard spoilers#dragon age spoilers#cassandra pentaghast#adaar x cassandra#I think adaar probably lost at least one of his parents along the way too and that's part of why he's SO tired and sad#I think harding heard about it and hugged him for five straight minutes. imagine tiny lace harding protectively embracing#the 2.7 meter tall purported second coming of andraste (the inquisitor has been reticent to define his divine situation#an ongoing ambiguity that has proved quite politically useful lol). and him very much needing it#never 4get that when it comes to inquisition I'm everything else second and a cassandra thirster first and foremost#my heart and my. well some other parts override my political brain immediately and I am helpless to stop that#cassandra trespasser slide with her sleeves rolled up over her strong powerful arms#grinning over her shoulder at the inquisitor be upon you and maybe then you'll understand

"[Elizabeth Woodville] was the only member of [Crown Prince Edward of Westminster's] original 1471 council not already on the king’s council and her name headed the list of those appointed as administrators in Wales during Edward’s minority. [She remained on the council after it was expanded in 1473 and granted additional governing and judicial powers]."
"In 1478 Prince Richard married the Mowbray heiress. Like his elder brother he had a chancellor, seal, household and council to manage his estates. His council, like that of Prince Edward, comprised the queen [Elizabeth Woodville] and a group of magnates and bishops, few of whom were Woodville supporters. [...] It was Elizabeth who mattered, for Richard resided with her and Rivers treated his affairs as their own."
— J.L. Laynesmith, The Last Medieval Queens: English Queenship 1445-1503 / Michael Hicks, Richard III and his Rivals: Magnates and their Motives in the Wars of the Roses
#good👏🏻 for 👏🏻 her#historicwomendaily#elizabeth woodville#15th century#english history#princes in the tower#my post#Reminder that these sort of additional official positions in governance were very unusual (unprecedented) for late medieval English queens#Elizabeth's formal appointment in royal councils (+ authority over her sons) should not be ignored or downplayed in the slightest bit#It should instead be considered one of the most defining aspects of her queenship that spanned over a decade and lasted right till the end#& should also be highlighted as one of the most vital topics of discussion when it comes to broader queenly power in late medieval England#I think it also says a lot about Elizabeth's relationship to Edward IV and the regard he seems to have had for her capabilities#'The only member of the original 1471 council not already on the king’s council' that speaks VOLUMES. Once again: good for her.#It's also really frustrating how some historians (Katherine J. Lewis; AJ Pollard; Laynesmith etc) have incredibly lopsided perspectives on#Elizabeth that fundamentally *do not work* when you remember these actual facts and what they reveal about her power and influence#I'm also still baffled at Lynda Pidgeon's claim that 'Elizabeth's influence with Edward IV was less than with family members who were#part of the king's council or that of her son Edward prince of Wales'. Like???????#First of all - we *already know* that Elizabeth had the most personal influence with Edward and was the one he trusted the most#The case in 1480 & his own will in 1475 (where he referred to her as the one 'in whom we most singularly place our trust') make both clear#Second of all - ELIZABETH WAS LITERALLY ON HER SONS' COUNCILS HERSELF. HER NAME HEADED THE GODDAMN LIST. How have you missed this????????#It's actually bizarre because it completely ignores the fact that 1) Late medieval queens *weren't* generally given positions like this?#If we accept Pidgeon's (false) interpretation we have to claim that NONE of them were influential at all#Which I'm pretty sure nobody agrees with? So why have I seen people agreeing with Pidgeon's FALSE take on Elizabeth based on that lmfao?#2) Elizabeth WAS in fact given such positions. She genuinely was given unusual authority and was an Exception™ rather than the rule#Forget emphasizing her atypical role - Pidgeon has outright erased it in an effort to diminish her#She does the same thing when talking about Elizabeth's role after Edward IV's death and it's equally ridiculous and incorrect#There's stupidity and then there's willful misreading & rewriting of history according to your own imagination. This fits the latter
