Visual Diary 6: Tools in Action #2
Both Feedback & Continuous Improvement and a Questioning Mindset are two important abstract tools in design leadership, and some that I need to focus on and gain more skill in. Baggu was a company that came to mind when I thought of these tools. They have been around and creating reusable bags since 2007, which is a good 17 years so you know in that time they had to utilize many design tools. Sustainability has also been a focus of theirs, and they even mention on their website that as they’ve grown  as a company they work towards addressing how to be more sustainable. Members from their Design, Production, Operations, Marketing and Brand departments meet to identify new ways and opportunities for growth and improvement within the company. Together they are asking questions that create a focus and inspire change, and in these meetings there has to be an openness to feedback and the want to constantly seek improvement.

Visual Diary #2 - Wicked Problems: Technology Usage
Tumblr media Tumblr media
How can we encourage individuals to reduce their reliance on personal devices, especially during moments with partners, families, and/or during meals? I am guilty of this wicked problem and notice myself wanting to change my habits. AS technology and phone addictions have increased, I find myself less present during meals, wanting to reach for my phone or thinking about what is going on in the social world. I have found myself needing to create intentional, phone-free times when with my partner to have a more enriching and deeper conversation.

Lessons in Design Leadership
These past few months have been quite the whirlwind- I've been through a rollercoaster of change, challenges, and unexpected encounters that have left me with some precious life lessons. This summer I waved goodbye to my 3-year role as a design strategist at Code3 due to team cuts. The layoff hit me like a curveball – uncertainty and a lot of doubts about what’s to come for me in my career.
In the midst of all that chaos, an exciting door opened – an interview opportunity at IDEO, which is a company I’ve always looked up to and admired. I made it to the 3rd round interview at this dream company, but ultimately wasn’t chosen for the role. Although it wasn’t the right time for me to embark on a journey with IDEO, the interview process was a crash course in how to display excellent design leadership skills.
IDEO's take on design leadership goes way beyond the design industry. Through products and services like IDEO U, they share the magic of design thinking with those outside of the design world who are looking for effective problem solving methods. It's about using empathy-driven design strategy to make the world a better place.
Not only do they prioritize empathy in their products, but they also do so in their recruiting tactics. During the interview process, I was struck by the genuine display of human-centered thinking and empathy at every step. The team's approach was a testament to their commitment to design leadership that truly places people at the core. Right from the start, the communication wasn't just transactional; it was a dialogue, a conversation that echoed the essence of human connection. They were not just professional but caring.
This experience illuminated the fact that design leadership isn't confined to a set process; it's an embodiment of human-centered values that infuse empathy and understanding into every interaction. It's about recognizing that every candidate, direct report, or colleague has unique stories, needs, and dreams just like the end-user.
While going through the interview process, I completed an assignment which can be viewed at the link below. I am super proud of the work that I did and I thoroughly enjoyed collaborating with the IDEO team to understand their needs and pain points. Overall, it was a learning experience I will always cherish.
So far this summer, the layoff has pushed me to explore new horizons, and although I have not found a new job yet, the IDEO interview gave me a lesson in expansive thinking. So here's to embracing change, finding nuggets of wisdom in unexpected places, and redefining what design leadership means to me.
Yours creatively, HM

Lush is a great example of a company successfully putting a stake in the ground. They make cosmetics by hand with fresh, organic ingredients. They also deliver a fun shopping experience and consistently offer exciting collaborations. My son and I enjoyed shopping the Beetlejuice collection, and the bath bombs did not disappoint!

Visual Diary 13 - Open Topic Post 2
Over the years a lot of companies have rebranded to keep up with the times. Some of them even changing their approach to entering the digital world. One company that stood out to me was LEGO. They expanded their reach by creating movies, tv shows and video games. They have achieved success without compromising their values. They even widened their appeal to adults. I think this is a good example of how to keep the stake in the ground.

I love it when farm animals in strategy games have their own little pockets of visibility in the fog of war, because the fog of war is ostensibly a visual abstraction of military intelligence-gathering, which implies that the goat is submitting intel reports.

Visual Diary 12
The Humanetics Group is addressing safety gaps that have been long known and disregarded by vehicle designers. The company's mission is to protect humans in motion. They're currently designing diverse crash test dummies to improve the safety of vehicles, which are commonly tested with dummies that represent the average male. Women and people of varying heights, weights, and frames are more likely to be injured because vehicle safety is simply not designed with them in mind. Humanetics' new, diverse generation of test dummies will go a long way in protecting more people.
While I applaud Humanetics for their work, I'm disappointed it took this long to address a known problem. The book Invisible Women was extremely illuminating in how much gender bias is perpetuated in the world of design. As a design leader, I think diversity and representation in research is extremely important to consider.

Visual Diary 6: Tools in Action #1
One tangible leadership tool that I am interested in, and have always felt the most confident when executing it is sketching/drawing. I feel like in the design world it is one of the most important tools because it’s where everything kind of starts, and you can go back as many times as you need to fix or add things to whatever project you’re working on. It’s a great way to communicate without words in my opinion. Below are some old sketches of mine from some of my graphic design classes during undergrad. The project was to create a flag that represented me in different ways, and by doing the sketches and collages I was able to put all my ideas down visually which makes things a lot easier for me as the first step.

Visual Diary #14 - Design Leadership - Reflection - P2
I learned so much during this course, through research, analysis, and setting parameters I was taught to approach “wicked problems” with curiosity, empathy, and a willingness to learn and listen. The research allowed me to understand the dynamics that drive gender stereotypes and the parameters helped me hone in on where I could make a difference.

Bathrooms for all
Tumblr media
While still controversial, gender neutral bathrooms have been an ongoing discussion for the LGBTQIA+ community. However, they are a great example of cultural parameters. While many agree and many disagree with the need for gender neutral bathrooms, they provide a safe space for individuals who might not otherwise feel safe in women or men specific restrooms.
Having the option for these gender neutral bathrooms is important for inclusivity and DEI initiatives for organizations and public spaces.
