So I have finally started some projects that I've been putting off for a.... long time. (Several years, tbh.)

I've begun recording all my cassette tapes and VHS tapes to digital.

For the cassette tapes I'm using Audacity (freeware) + a cassette player that is specifically designed to plug into a computer via USB - it sends the audio info in stereo as two separate microphone feeds - and if you put the tape in, rewind to the start, and then hit play (with Audacity recording) the tape will play to the end of side one, auto flip to side two and play to the end of side two. At which point it'll stop playing and I can stop Audacity from recording. It's pretty easy to get the whole tape recorded and then it's just a matter of going through and splitting the audio between songs and saving the songs as separate mp3 files. It's pretty easy, if a bit time consuming. I can have the tapes record while I work which is nice, since I don't have to pay too much attention to it; just make sure I stop Audacity's recording shortly after the tape finishes playing.

For recording the VHS tapes, I have an RCA to usb converter that came with a program that let's me record VHS to digital format to DVD. My test VHS was for the old Clue VCR Mystery Game that I snagged from my parents in college and simply never gave back. (Me explaining what I'm using for my test to my dad and him going 'huh, you know I think we've got one of those too... wait... you little thief' and I'm just 'yup, that's me. Also I want to steal all your cassettes'. So he's gonna find me all his cassettes.)

The Clue game will get saved to my home server both as one long file for the full hour tape and then chopped into sections which will probably be more playable. But the video is fun to watch for it's own sake (the characters descending into chaos as they try to kill each other is hilarious) and I've certainly been known to do so; thus having it in both formats is useful. I'm also going to figure out how to use the software I've got to create a dvd with chapters and the like so I can keep that in the box with the rest of the game parts - cards, a decoder for the cards, game sheets (which I'm gonna scan so I can print out extras), and the rules booklet. I know there was a sequel game so I'm going to see if maybe I can track that down for my own curiosity.

But while the game VHS will get fancy treatment, regular VHS tapes will just get cut down to just the movie and added to my emby server. I've only got a handful of VHS but they're cheap and it could be fun to poke around and pick up older movies that way. I'm admittedly more into the cassettes, but it's a fun to know that if I pick up a 'new' vhs or cassette now that I can work on them here and there to migrate them over to digital.

I've cut my recording of Cruisin' Classics VI into three mp3s already and I'm looking forward to being able to stick the whole thing on a cd so I can once again listen to it in my car. (My first car had both a cd player and cassette player.) And my dad has Cruisin' Classics IV in the box of cassettes I'll be 'stealing' from him this weekend. (Like any master thief, I announce my intentions beforehand to give the owners a fighting chance. But with my sidekick Estelle distracting them with cuteness and her demands to be petted and adored, I shall nevertheless get away with the box they will have left out for me to take home. hehehe)

I don't have any records or I'd probably get a turn table that would let me record them to my computer - or borrow the one my dad has. So, uh, you can see who I got the preservation bug from.

What We Learned from Flying a Helicopter on Mars

The Ingenuity Mars Helicopter made history – not only as the first aircraft to perform powered, controlled flight on another world – but also for exceeding expectations, pushing the limits, and setting the stage for future NASA aerial exploration of other worlds.

Built as a technology demonstration designed to perform up to five experimental test flights over 30 days, Ingenuity performed flight operations from the Martian surface for almost three years. The helicopter ended its mission on Jan. 25, 2024, after sustaining damage to its rotor blades during its 72nd flight.

So, what did we learn from this small but mighty helicopter?

We can fly rotorcraft in the thin atmosphere of other planets.

Ingenuity proved that powered, controlled flight is possible on other worlds when it took to the Martian skies for the first time on April 19, 2021.

Flying on planets like Mars is no easy feat: The Red Planet has a significantly lower gravity – one-third that of Earth’s – and an extremely thin atmosphere, with only 1% the pressure at the surface compared to our planet. This means there are relatively few air molecules with which Ingenuity’s two 4-foot-wide (1.2-meter-wide) rotor blades can interact to achieve flight.

Ingenuity performed several flights dedicated to understanding key aerodynamic effects and how they interact with the structure and control system of the helicopter, providing us with a treasure-trove of data on how aircraft fly in the Martian atmosphere.

Now, we can use this knowledge to directly improve performance and reduce risk on future planetary aerial vehicles.

Creative solutions and “ingenuity” kept the helicopter flying longer than expected.

Over an extended mission that lasted for almost 1,000 Martian days (more than 33 times longer than originally planned), Ingenuity was upgraded with the ability to autonomously choose landing sites in treacherous terrain, dealt with a dead sensor, dusted itself off after dust storms, operated from 48 different airfields, performed three emergency landings, and survived a frigid Martian winter.

Fun fact: To keep costs low, the helicopter contained many off-the-shelf-commercial parts from the smartphone industry - parts that had never been tested in deep space. Those parts also surpassed expectations, proving durable throughout Ingenuity’s extended mission, and can inform future budget-conscious hardware solutions.

There is value in adding an aerial dimension to interplanetary surface missions.

Ingenuity traveled to Mars on the belly of the Perseverance rover, which served as the communications relay for Ingenuity and, therefore, was its constant companion. The helicopter also proved itself a helpful scout to the rover.

After its initial five flights in 2021, Ingenuity transitioned to an “operations demonstration,” serving as Perseverance’s eyes in the sky as it scouted science targets, potential rover routes, and inaccessible features, while also capturing stereo images for digital elevation maps.

Airborne assets like Ingenuity unlock a new dimension of exploration on Mars that we did not yet have – providing more pixels per meter of resolution for imaging than an orbiter and exploring locations a rover cannot reach.

Tech demos can pay off big time.

Ingenuity was flown as a technology demonstration payload on the Mars 2020 mission, and was a high risk, high reward, low-cost endeavor that paid off big. The data collected by the helicopter will be analyzed for years to come and will benefit future Mars and other planetary missions.

Just as the Sojourner rover led to the MER-class (Spirit and Opportunity) rovers, and the MSL-class (Curiosity and Perseverance) rovers, the team believes Ingenuity’s success will lead to future fleets of aircraft at Mars.

Chosen technologies are thoroughly ground- and flight-tested in relevant operating environments — reducing risks to future flight missions, gaining operational heritage and continuing NASA’s long history as a technological leader.

I don't think I showed you guys my stereo setup yet? :3

It's been a work in progress for a while, but I finally got it all set up and I'm sooo pleased with how it looks and sounds.

The Pioneer six-tape changer is the heart of my setup - I actually specifically hunted down the other units to go with it. This was my dad's tape deck when I was a little kid, and was how I first heard the Grateful Dead and Yes and many other incredible artists. I put the cow sticker on there when I was four or five years old and it's been there ever since.

Full details of the equipment below:

1. Technics SB-T200 tower speakers (2003) (not pictured) which were a $6 auction score and didn't even need any repair work hell yeah. These are connected via banana plug and speaker wire to:

4. Pioneer CT-M6R Multi-Cassette Changer (1989), which again takes SIX tapes and is sooooo special to me

6. And finally, 3.5mm aux cable so I'm ready for anything

7. It's all connected to a Pioneer DT-560 audio digital timer (1985), mostly for easy power management and to have a clock in the room

Setup took a couple hours, but a big part of that was that I kept changing my mind about which components to put where, haha. This was sooo much fun to put together overall!

All of my fellow music enjoyers should ABSOLUTELY put together a "grown-up" stereo system like this. It was way easier (and more affordable) than I would have expected. Your turn now. gogogo!!

Custom 1953 Muntz Jet Convertible

This 1953 Muntz Jet convertible underwent a three-year custom build under previous ownership, and it was purchased by the seller in 2021. The car is powered by a fuel-injected 5.7-liter LT1 V8 engine paired with a four-speed automatic transmission and a Ford 9″ rear end, and it is finished in Apple Pearl with a white Carson-style removable top over gray snakeskin-style Naugahyde upholstery. Features include custom bodywork, an Art Morrison frame, power-assisted steering, four-wheel disc brakes, airbag suspension, Painless Performance wiring, and more modified and fabricated details. This custom-built Muntz is now offered with a copy of Rodder’s Journal magazine featuring a story on the build and a clean California title in the name of the seller’s business.

The steel, aluminum, and fiberglass body is mounted on an Art Morrison ladder frame that was boxed and finished in semi-gloss black, and the floor was raised 3″. The exterior was repainted in a Sherwin Williams two-stage Apple Pearl mixed by the late Stan Betz. Features include a chopped Duvall-style windshield, 1950 Chevrolet headlights, dual Appleton spotlights, 1951 Ford Victoria side windows, and a white removable Carson-style top fabricated to match the height of the chopped windshield. Additional equipment includes color-matched rear fender skirts and chrome bumpers. Wear from fitting the top is noted on the rear deck.

Steel wheels sourced from a 1976 Dodge measure 15″ and are mounted with Cadillac Sombrero-style covers and whitewall tires. A matching spare fitted with a BFGoodrich Silvertown tire is mounted within a rear-mounted Continental-style chrome carrier. A Mustang II front end accommodates power rack-and-pinion steering , and the car rides on an electronically-adjustable Air Ride Technologies airbag suspension system along with 2” lowered front spindles, Strange Engineering tube shocks, a rear Panhard bar, and front and rear sway bars. The seller reports that the front control arm bushings were recently replaced.

Braking is handled by GM G-body-sourced calipers matched with Ford Granada discs up front and Ford SVO-specification calipers and discs at the rear.

The cabin was customized by Jim’s Auto Trim of San Diego, California, and features Glide bucket seats and a rear bench trimmed in gray snakeskin-style Naugahyde upholstery, along with matching treatments for the dash trim, headliner, and door panels. Additional equipment includes a 1952 Lincoln steering wheel mounted to a shortened Lincoln steering column, gray cut-pile carpet, and a Pioneer stereo housed within a custom center cubby.

The engine-turned “Hollywood” instrument cluster houses Stewart Warner gauges consisting of an 8k-rpm tachometer, a 160-mph speedometer, and auxiliary readings for fuel level, battery charge, oil pressure, and water temperature. The five-digit odometer displays 25k miles, though total chassis mileage is unknown. A Lokar pedal assembly was fitted during the build.

The Corvette-sourced 5.7-liter LT1 V8 features a polished fuel intake manifold along with billet aluminum valve covers, and additional features include an Opti-Spark distributor, a Griffin aluminum radiator, and a wiring loom sourced from Painless Performance Wiring. A set of long-tube headers are connected to a 2.5″ exhaust system equipped with dual Dynaflow mufflers. The seller reports that the oil was recently changed.

Power is routed to the rear wheels via a four-speed 4L60E automatic transmission and a Ford 9″ rear end with with 3.55:1 gears and Strange Engineering 31-spline axles. Additional photos of the underside, drivetrain, and suspension components are presented in the gallery below.

Hehehe I offer you car wash feel up. It was too good to pass up Beachcomber getting a car spa treatment after a beach trip. So enjoy Beachcomber getting worked up by his human companion feeling him up unknowingly

beachcomber as he sits on the Oceanside watching the waves roll in.  "Comber!" A voice breaks him out of his daze on the rolling waves. His human companion is making their way back up out of the surf towards him. Beachcomber smiles as he watches them walk towards him. 

"Waves treat ya kindly?" he calls back out to them, gesturing for them to join him on the sands. The roar of the ocean in the background is peaceful compared to the sound of all the ruckus back at base. They settled beside him looking through a bag seeking a lost towel, when they found it they laid it across the sand as they lay down beside Beachcomber. 

"Mmm the surf is great" they state before dropping down to sit on the sand beside him. They lean back enjoying the sun on their skin as they lay on the towel. "Let me know when you wanna head back, promised you we'd go to the car wash since you brought me to the beach, can't have you getting rusty can we" they state with a lopsided smile as they.

Beachcomber laughs in return as he runs his servos over their head, digits brushing their wet hair. "Earth has such beauty, I've never seen oceans like this before." He reply while watching the waters As gulls' calls punctuated serene ambience, Beachcomber savoured Natural beauty of the landscape.   

They lay in the sun for a little longer trying to dry off more, after a little they grab their gear. "Well I'm ready to head off, we'll stop at the car wash to give us both a chance to get the sand off us" they hum happily. 

Beachcomber stirred gently, he stands up stretching slightly before he Transforms with fluid grace, engine purring soft invitation. They are quick to throw their gear into the passenger seat, clicking their seatbelt as they give Beachcomber's steering wheel a pat. “All set” the state. 

Beachcomber pulled smoothly across the sand starting the drive back to the beach entrance of the shore, following the tracks in the sand he  drifts slightly which makes them laugh lightly from the squeal the sand makes under Beachcomber's tires. 

The drive is peaceful, Beachcomber uses his mirrors to watch them as their arm rests on the side of the door drifting in the wind as they drive, the ocean Air brushes against their face before they finally end up back on a paved road. "Just up here Comber, this is the car wash I was telling you about, its the one most cars go to after beach camping" they call him.

Beachcomber's engine purred with gratitude as they signalled their destination ahead. He parks carefully on the grates. "OK Beach boy, bath time" They state teasingly while moving to grab the pressure washer off the wall. They check the settings and soap as they move towards Beachcomber. “ alright tell me if the pressure is too much” they call out to him as the hit him with the soap spray. 

Beachcomber's engine lets out a choked noise before he settles at the feeling of the soap coating his frame. his frame shutters as they lean down and begin scrubbing with a cloth humming along to music playing on his stereo. 

 They lean down under his shield and bumper scrubbing it before moving to the fender which Makes Beachcomber gasp in delight as a choked vent leaves him at the feeling.

Beachcomber has to shut down his vocal system so he doesn't moan as he moves to his wheels and hubcaps. tiny vibrations from his engine in a trembling purr is the only sound outside of every now and then revving too much. 

In truth Beachcomber, he wasn't expecting this kinda treatment with a hands on wash but he would be damned to the pits if he let his vocalisations ruin this for him. Beachcomber's engine rumbled deeply, fans whirring as if overheating. At each movement form his companions' hands that brushes the hidden nooks behind his wheel-struts. Charge ripples through his frame, he can feel himself getting worked up, transfluid leaking from his undercarriage. 

They continue working the grim out of his wheels as they then scrub down his doors, moving further down his frame, their hands move across more sensitive cabling under his door frame as they clean. More transfluid leak from him onto the ground into the grate as he shutters. 

He lets out a silent groan, grinding plating together against his Spike. As the begin scrubbing the underside of his frame trying to make sure they get all the sand and salt their eyes catch a bright pink fluid leaking from Beachcomber. "Hey Beach, I think you have a leak or a broken line." They call out while continuing to clean and rinse him off of soap and grim. They run their fingers over the pink fluid before rubbing it between their fingers trying to figure out what it is.

Beachcomber vented raggedly, in effort to cool his systems from the overwhelming touch. Slowly, consciousness returned, along with mortified realisation as their hand brushed over his overstimulated spike again. “Primus might be transmission fluid” he states quickly hoping that it was believable enough for them not to question it. 

They give a light shrug before wiping the fluid away and washing the remaining fluid away. “Didn't know you guys had pink Transmissions fluid, but eh alien robots should have known you guys don't work fully like us” they mumble.  It makes Beachcomber shutter in relief.  “yea joys of being cybertronian,  but I'll have to get Ratchet to check it out once we get back to base” he rumbles as they give him one last spray down with water. 

“Well you're all clean now Beach, are you ready to head back yet?” They ask with a tilted head and smile. His engine purrs lightly as he debates driving when he knows it would be a shaky drive back to base. “Let me soak in some more sunlight before we head back” he calls back to them.

Alright it's time for the SCP crossover stuck in my head ever since I finished this show.

Anderson Robotics holds the monopoly on robots in this one. And the foundation were the ones in charge of experiments to make the patch, with facilities on every exoplanet humanity settled. They even made special security drones just for the foundation to use.

Also when solver infected drones first appeared, the foundation assumed it was a slip-up between the anomalous and non-anomalous robots, since the company has its beginnings with magical robots. After the company cleared it up with foundation, they began a somewhat low-priority investigation.

At first the hypothesis was that the solver's anomalous properties were Mechanite in origin, and after they discovered its biomechanical nature, maybe it was Sarkic in origin. It was also suggested that this anomaly was a rare combination of magic from both rival religions. Others suggested it was [REDACTED].

Then the solver got to its second and third phases and it all went rapidly downhill.

What appealed to you about the five works you selected?

The album mentioned here is reminiscent of Scum of the Earth's second album, SLEAZE FREAK.

When I listen to music like this, I feel like I'm the captain of the world.

Q2: What is the relationship between music and the fashion you create?

I don't say it often, but deep down I am a wild, amoral creature.

But including those things,

Music reminds me not to take anything too seriously.

Q1: What appealed to you about the five works you selected?

Although the genres are different, they all evoke strong emotions in us. Working, eating, dancing, traveling, or just relaxing... The albums we listen to will of course change depending on the mood of the moment. But these albums (not just these five, of course) add depth to whatever we are doing.

Q2: What is the relationship between music and the fashion you create?

Living in California, we have always been familiar with the diverse mix of music we use in our KENZO shows. That kind of music is still an essential part of our daily lives, and we would like to continue collaborating with various musicians. With music, one song can express everything from attitude to emotion to stance. That is why choosing the music to use in our shows is as important to us as deciding the venue for the show. KENZO has collaborated with M.I.A., Jamie XX, Dev Hynes, and Vampire Weekend. The music played during the show adds another layer to our creations. It conveys our message from a different perspective than the design. Right now, we can't wait for the men's show in June.

Q1: What appealed to you about the five works you selected?

[01]. A "techno web shooter" that easily slips through the dualism of past and future, stretching strings from the roof of a digitally constructed cyber circuit. [02]. A new age strikes back from virtual reality. Gothic futurism reboots! [03]. Down south in a hearse from a pitch-black rave castle. "The Walking Dead of Trap". [04]. A fragile cyber mayfly that flickers silently in the virtual world of Second Life, or a voiceless voice and a sequence that does not become a sequence of numbers in a digital mirage of a desertifying network. [05]. An acoustic submarine that dives deep underwater. Resupply completed at rendezvous point "Detroit". Weapons released when surfacing. The noble mission never stops.

Q2: What is the relationship between music and the fashion you create?

Fashion and music are like the components of a stereo; devices that allow for infinite combinations. Colours, sounds and materials each have their own frequency, and by selecting your favourite components you can download from a server a stereo system with infinite combinations. "It is not clear how humans perceive pitch. A sound that most people would normally perceive as a 'chord of two notes' can sometimes be heard as a single note depending on the relationship with the music before and after it. In other words, memory also plays a role in the recognition of pitch (fundamental frequency)."

Q1: What appealed to you about the five works you selected?

[01]. It's very plain, but also has a strange organic feel to it. I remember being shocked when I first heard it, and being surprised at how young the artist was. [02].As with his previous work from 2004, it has just the right amount of sadness. I used it in this show. [03]. He's an excellent songwriter and singer. [04]. It's just so cool. I personally think it's the sound I want the most right now. Free's bass line feels great. I don't think there's anything particularly new about each element, but when they're all combined, I think it has a new nuance that suits the current era. He has great taste. [05]. This is the one I bought most recently. It's fun because it contains music from various genres, and I never get bored of listening to it. The 30 songs go by in a flash. I've been listening to this a lot lately on my commute.

Q2: What is the relationship between music and the fashion you create?

I don't spend as much time buying music as I used to. Many of the things I've listed here were recommended to me by acquaintances. But I'm glad that none of them are bad. I don't listen to music with the intention of being influenced by it. When I come across something I like that makes me think it would be nice to be able to do that kind of work, it motivates me in my work and encourages me. This isn't limited to music, but I think it's lucky to come across something like that.

Q1: What appealed to you about the five works you selected?

A love for music, a creative attitude, and a passion for detail.

They are exactly the same as my thoughts about clothes, and they have perfectly achieved my ideal goal.

Q2: What is the relationship between music and the fashion you create?

The art of music always runs ahead, and fashion watches its back, never catching up or overtaking it, but is one of those arts that always continues to engage in a dialogue at the same distance...and it's difficult to put it into words any more than this.

Okay but that's also not true. CD audio is actually pretty damn fantastic. You're probably familiar with listening to CDs through shitty headphones with your discman or through one of those cheap all in one (radio/cassette/CD) stereo boom-boxes we all had in the late '90s and early '00s. Play a CD through a really good sound system (a decent amplifier and a nice pair of passive speakers) and it's going to sound wonderful, and I'm talking about the original Red Book specification CD (PCM audio at 44.1khz and 16bit) when I say it will sound good. Above that there's Super Audio CD which is four times the bitrate and the audio is encoded with DSD and PDM so you've got a wider dynamic range. I own a few SACDs and they honestly blow me away with how spacious and detailed they sound, and there are some really amazing 5.1 mixes of albums on SACD and DVD audio (pro-tip: get the 5.1 downmix of the Talking Heads discography, you can thank me later). Unfortunately SACD was always pretty niche and requires special equipment to take full advantage.

And I'm going to be real for a minute. I love vinyl. I own hundreds of LPs. My stereo system for listening to vinyl is a pretty high end mid-70s vintage setup that would've cost the equivalent of a brand new car in 1975. Vinyl can sound incredible on the right setup but vinyl has problems. There's surface noise, there are bad pressings, inner groove distortion is a thing, records pressed after the 1973 oil crisis are often pressed on thin, shitty vinyl that has more surface pops and deforms more easily. Records pressed from recycled vinyl have more surface noise than ones pressed from virgin vinyl. Records pick up dust and you need to keep them clean or you risk damaging both them and your stylus. You have to replace your stylus after every four hundred hours of use or so, and if you're using a vintage cartridge (like me) that might be both expensive and difficult. Then there's the issues with your setup, a tone arm with too heavy or too light a tracking force can damage your records or introduce more noise. If your turntable is belt driven, a worn belt will cause timing issues, and a direct drive turntable can introduce unwanted noise. It's a very fiddly format. It's a very nice experience, I love listening to records on the turntable because I give them my full attention, but under no means does it "sound better", it sounds different.

And these days very few people know how to master vinyl properly so you're often just getting the CD/digital master pressed to a record and you can tell. I bought a reissue of Bowie's "Heroes" and it's mastered so loud it made the stylus skip.

I honestly don't know where this idea of "CDs don't sound good" came from, no they sound great, they're just fragile and jewel cases suck so goddamned much.

Just had a memory jag chuckle from the Record Store days ('81-'86).

Those of a certain age might remember a single-panel comic that was in some music trade magazine back when CDs first really took over.

It was of a corporate board room with the president talking, the yes-men lined up at the table.

The text was something like "Gentlemen, I am happy to report that our warehouses full of Record Cleaning Fluid just became CD-Cleaning Fluid!"

It was a poke at DiscWasher, to be sure, but here we are 45 years later, with vinyl making a something of a comeback.

There is something about the needle dragging through the groove...the absolute PHYSICALITY of that act, that made CDs instantly seem cold and lifeless back in '81-82.

The CD tech got better over the years, and they got good at mastering the material for the medium, but it's the PHYSICALITY of needle meeting groove that makes the music hit you harder on vinyl than it does from a CD.

And here's the thing: The transfers I make of albums I have on vinyl have that "physicality" that their digital CD counterparts don't, because the initial source is vinyl passing through a two-tube phono stage straight to SSD. That comes through in the final files. Play my transfer and play the digital file generally available back to back, and it's a world of difference.

I think of all the things that are gonna be lost to time that I've held so important for all these years...just simple things like "how things work"..."how to fix things"..."how to start a fire for warmth/cooking".

Knowing how to set up a component stereo system is one of those things. Knowing how to balance the tone-arm and set the stylus weight on the turntable. Knowing how to fix the amp if it goes south, etc.
