Little Mermaids at the Laundromat
I saw a lot of other artists drawing both versions of Ariel and I thought it looked like fun. So, I made some funky, silly art with bright colors. TBH, The Little Mermaid was never my favorite story, but the aesthetic of the 1989 was really gorgeous. I’m excited to see all the new designs and art in the new film with Halle Bailey.

My favourite line from the new The Little Mermaid movie:

So excited to be part of her world tonight. 🥰
This is a drawing I completed about a month after the first trailer's release for The Little Mermaid, and it's one I'm immensely proud of so I wanted to share it with Tumblr. Was fun but challenging to create because I don't draw humans very often, as I prefer to draw or paint wildlife/landscape/objects, but Halle Bailey's Ariel was something I could not pass up on. I hope you all enjoy this as much as my husband did!
pls do not repost my art.

When I was a kid, I had the DVD of Disney's Little Mermaid and of course my favorite character was Ursula the Sea-Witch. One can say that she was the only reason I watched this movie as I really didn't care about the other characters.
Tumblr media
And of course a part of this was due to her insanely cool design. As a kid I always had a thing for "octopus-people", mostly due to the best villains of my childhood's cartoons being tentacled hybrids - from Poseidon's interpretation by "Mission Odyssey" to Bai Tza the Water Demon from "Jackie Chan Adventures". (There was also this one episode of "Moby Dick and the secret of Mü" which had a girl that turned into a deadly octopus because of some curse? I need to rewatch this)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(I also thing these two cartoon series might have done something for me being into large-shouldered black-haired guys... Anyway)
But the best part of having the DVD was one of the bonuses. Because one of the bonuses was a full gallery of the dozens of unused concept art for Ursula, and this was WILD. Like seriously: before they settled on her iconic design, the creative team tried not only all sorts of body shapes and color palettes, but especially tons of different sea creatures to see which one would render the best. And let me tell you, this can give everybody inspiration for their own take on the Little Mermaid's Sea-Witch. Just look at some of them, they're crazy:

Okay, I’m gonna talk about the movie, so spoiler warning.
If you haven’t, I would highly recommend seeing the movie. It was something truly special. If you have, talk to me in the comments! I’d love to know what other people think. Be kind please.

Ok...
I just loved the movie so much. I’m so glad they expanded it out. Like the scene in the village and with kiss the girl. I was melting. Ariel and Eric are just so cute together. I loved when Ariel is trying to get Eric to guess her name. Just every time they were together it was so real, and in the end where Eric is still longer for her even under the spell.
I really loved how it opened the dark above water transitioning into the vibrant sea, and then the mermaids singing just gave me goosebumps. Halle was the perfect Ariel her voice gave me chills every time she sang.
I personally loved her song as she coms into land when it’s such a huge build up only for Eric to now know her and it slowly falls apart. I felt that.
It’s not that in the original the relationship was bad, but it’s just so much stronger here. I even got butterflies from watching them together, such wonderful chemistry.
I also loved watching Ariel wander in the shopping district seeing her interact with all these new things was wonderful. Even the kiss the girl scene was a lot more magical, in my option, than the animated. Seeing them in Eric's room of collections was also so cute with how she was teaching him new things. Then him saying “my little mermaid,” I just melted.
One thing I was worried about was when I heard about the amnesia thing. I thought they’d completely wipe her thoughts about Eric, but it was only about getting a kiss. I didn’t mind it at all. Seeing them together was so cute. From them looking at maps together, and then to looking up at the stars. It was just so cute watching them interact more.
I thought that Ursula was also wonderful, Melissa McCarthy was really funny. I didn’t mind the changes to Poor unfortunate soul either. I still thought it was very powerful. Speaking of which, changing the contract to a scaled sealed in blood was a creative change. Also, King Tritons death had me in shock. Literally turned him into a skeleton and sink to the bottom on the ocean.
Going back to the music, I really liked the new songs added. Especially Eric's song. Jonah Hauer-King put his heart and soul into it I could tell. Gave me chills just like Halle.
I also liked how Ariel fights Ursula at the engagement. When she got her voice back I felt my heart rate spike. I loved that scene.
As for the ending, I liked Ariel saving Eric. Some people seemed to take issue, but I liked the change. Her fighting to get to the wheel was so intense even when you know what will happen. Also Ursula's giant form was so cool. Even if it was dark it was so foreboding.
Then there's King Triton coming to Ariel and Eric at the end. I cried. Just seeing such a sweet moment between father and daughter was just so sweet. With the mermaids and humans coming together I couldn’t not cry.
There’s probably so much more I could say. I love this movie and I think it’s become my new favorite. But I’ve already said so much. Please be nice in the comments. 💖

ROUND 1A, MATCH 1 OUT OF 8!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Propaganda Under the Cut:
Ariel (Animated):
Because someone had to submit her. I mean the animated version, specifically.
She may make very stupid decisions in the name of her special interest, but you've got to admire the dedication at least! Also goddamn her singing voice.
Part of Your World still hits so hard and makes me so emotional, despite not feeling very attached to this movie. Jodi Benson has such a beautiful voice! I haven't watched the live-action remake so I don't know how good that rendition of Part Of Your World is, but this one is so incredibly powerful.
Ariel (Live Action):
She's just so cute and beautiful and sweet and her singing voice is amazing!!!
I LOVED the live action! Ariel was portrayed so well and given a lot more depth. Plus, her and Eric's relationship was ALSO given a lot more depth <3 The scene where she breaks something (i don't quite remember what it was XD) and shows him what was inside? Them bonding over their love of learning? Hovering over a map? Scurrying around and hiding from Eric's mom? Couple goals, imo. idc if I get into a relationship or not, but if I ever do i hope to god they will geek out with me as much as these two nerds did <3
tbh i have despised all of the new disney live action adaptations, and haven't watched them since the less then stellar beauty and the beast was released in 2017. but everyone was going on about how good this one and when i finally watched it was pleasantly surprised. sure there were general soul-less disney remake moments - but halley bailey's ariel was so beautiful and genuine! her passion and determination, her beautiful voice, how flippin expressive her eyes are. ironic that a little mermaid was such a breath of fresh air. an absolutely beautiful character adaptation
She was forced to listen to Awkwafina rap, she deserves SOMETHING.

Fun fact about one of the new Little Mermaid songs
In the original English version of the song "The Scuttlebutt" Scuttle describes Eric as being "the guy with the hair and the shirt".
And in the Brazilian version, she describes him as "o cara lá, o tal cabeludo e fortão," the gist of it translating as "Y'know, the dude with all the hair and the muscles."
Which doesn't sound as funny when translated back to English, but in Portuguese it sounds pretty hysterical.
What I'm saying is that though the Brazilian translation is pretty hilarious, the English version is giving it a run for its money for once.

For a moment, I can shine ✨
Got a grin and a fin that works fine 🧡🩵
Got a bit of inspiration for Melody’s design from her Auntie Indira since their tails are a little close in color. Honestly all the mer designs in the new TLM movie slapped so hard its a shame we only got to see them for a sparse few moments. Holding on tight to the possibility of a sequel so we can see more of them and (eventually, maybe) Melody herself.

O, What's in a Name?
Ariel
Tumblr media
Franchise: Disney's The Little Mermaid
Origin: Hebrew (אריאל)
Meaning: Lion of God
Character Connection: The first known mention of the name appears in the Torah as the name of an angel. It's possible Disney decided on the name due to the fact that mermaids are said to have beautiful and "angelic" voices. However, it's more likely that Disney chose to name the character after the spirit from Shakespeare's The Tempest.
Like Shakesperean Ariel, Disney Ariel longs for freedom and is connected to a storm and shipwreck during which no one is harmed. Similarly to Disney Ariel, Shakesperean Ariel is also given a timeframe for when they will potentially gain their freedom (in their case it's two days instead of three).
Sidenote: It's worth mentioning that in the original text by Hans Christian Andersen, none of the characters have names.

I like that they kept Flotsam and Jetsam cartoony in the new Little Mermaid movie, because realistic slender green moray eels might give younger kiddos nightmares:
