I am your resident Art Director/Good Omens enthusiast, and welcome to my completely meta-free book cover tier list. Listen, making a book cover is HARD. I should know. But while we salute these artists for their hard work and time, I think we can all admit that once in a while, the vision is just not on. And on very rare occasions, publishers seemed to have managed to commission the cover art directly from hell... here's where we left off last time:

21. Labas zīmes, Latvian cover

Our boys are back! And they are so ready to join the Dead Boy Detective agency. I would say that Latvians don't wear much tartan, so Argyle might seem like a similar print, but it just seems so... not Good Omens. Much like Crowley's flying purple people eater tail and Aziraphale's Conan the Barbarian sword, we're straying into niche AU fan fiction territory here. I mean, it's not *wrong*, but it certainly ain't right, either.

22. Bons Augùrios, Portuguese

Let me start by saying this cover is so close to being in the blessed category. The layout and spacing are divine, the imagery is simple and whimsical, it reflects the humour inside the gravitas to give you an idea of the *feeling* of reading Good Omens. So few of these covers have gotten this aspect of good design right. Honestly, I would slow clap if it wasn't for that random FLAME JIZZ stuck to the bottom right hand corner of the book. Who's idea was that? Dagon's?

23. Semne Bune, Romanian cover

I admire two things about this cover: 1) Their utter commitment to a clean 3-colour palette and comprehensible layout. 2) Symbolic demon giving a principality head joke RIGHT ON THE FRONT COVER. This designer had balls. cotillion-sized balls. Now, does Aziraphale's sword have a sentient rooster tassel that watches said head-giving in horror? I sure hope not, but I don't see how that could be allegorical so, I'm torn. I feel like this goes in two categories for completely different reasons. And seeing as I'm in charge around here...

Tier: Great & Not so Good (Omens)

23. Semne Bune, Romanian cover cont.

Compared to the last cover's gigantic double-entendre, this feels so tame and logical. The text is centred and balanced. There's breathing room, and we have wing symbolism! I've never seen a cover try to split Terry and Neil's names like that, which is a fun twist but BY GOD that center line is not straight near the right end of the feathers and it is sending this cover straight down to Does the Job. It's grounded there forever.

Tier: Does the Job

25. HYVIÄ ENTEITÄ, Finnish cover

In this list, having something actually *relevant* to the main plot of the book and not mangling and main characters really puts you in rarefied air. All the motorcycles are book accurate which means somebody read something! Would I have ever picked the empty parking lot of Famine's restaurant as a subject worth a cover? Absolutely not. But the sick 80s lightning tips it into "fine" territory. The text is yellow. It's pretty.

26. Head ended, Estonian cover.

My face after staring at this cover for ten minutes and finally realizing that this is Hastur and Ligur waiting around for Crowley to pull up:

Do I even need to rate this? It's called HEAD ENDED. I don't know how to be funnier than that.

Tier: WTF

27. Dobry Omen, Polish cover

Some good points for trying to be original with the layout of the title by drawing a custom pitchfork "Y", but the heinous kerning and the fact the whole text block is not even centred kind of makes me take all the points back. I feel like we're pretty heavy on the demonic, extremely light on the angelic in this take. Maybe it's because on his death bed the lead guitarist of White Snake will finally admit to having designed this cover in his spare time.

28. Good Omens, Hungarian cover

If I told you this designer did not read the book, and instead just watched the trailer of The Omen (the movie) and vibed this heinous brown carpet swatch into existence, you would one hundred percent believe me. I can't even talk about the faux belle-époque font right now. I am irrationally angry.

29. Good Omens, Bulgarian cover

WHO. IS. DADDY. WIZARD?? Is all I can think when I look at this cover. Aziraphale & Grommet are recognizable enough, and you could make the case for telescope monkey being Adam, but I need to find this cover designer and shake them until they tell me who this deranged Gargamel is supposed to be. I must know.

30. BELAS MALDIÇÕES, Portuguese cover

After all we've been through on this list so far, this truly sucks. It's not even weird. It's just puce text layered atop text to create a great yawn of a cover. Shout out to the designer of the Diablo PC game font, I hope you got paid.

Dobry wieczór. Since it’s International Women’s Day (albeit not strictly), tonight I would like to draw my followers’ attention to the female pianists and composers who were my contemporaries… Apologies for the lengthiness, evidently there is a lot to be covered.

Clara Schumann 1819-1896

A child prodigy, Clara was taught piano by her father and by thirteen he was taking her on concert tours.

She met Robert Schumann as a child when he came to Leipzig to study law at the university. He took piano lessons from Clara’s father, Friedrich Wieck. When she was 18, he proposed to her. They married in 1840.

The virtuoso went on tours with her husband and earn money by performing and teaching. She was also a gifted composer, however most of her time was spent looking after her family, editing Robert’s music and playing. Clara’s compositions include more than 20 piano works, a piano concerto, some chamber music and several songs.

Fanny Mendelssohn 1805–1847

Composer and pianist, Fanny grew up in Berlin, sharing the same musical education as her brother Felix, with whom she had a close relationship.

Her compositions include a piano trio, a piano quartet, an orchestral overture, four cantatas, more than 125 pieces for the piano and over 250 lieder, most of which were unpublished in her lifetime. Although lauded for her piano technique, she rarely gave public performances outside her family circle.

Owing to her family's reservations and to social conventions of the time about the roles of women, six of her songs were published under her brother's name in his Opus 8 and 9 collections.

Marie Moke 1811-1874

Marie Moke gave her first concert at the age of eight and by the age of fifteen, she was already known in Belgium, Austria, Germany and Russia as an accomplished virtuoso.

She married pianist and piano manufacturer, Camille Pleyel, but they later separated on account of her promiscuity. Heinrich Heine considered her among the greatest pianists “Thalberg is a king, Liszt a prophet, Chopin a poet, Herz an advocate, Kalkbrenner a minstrel, Mme Pleyel a sibyl, and Döhler a pianist.”

Later on, she created the piano school at the Royal Conservatory in Brussels where she taught from 1848 to 1872.

Louise Farrenc 1804-1875

A French composer, virtuoso pianist and teacher, she started playing young and had piano lessons with famous teachers such as Moscheles and Hummel. She studied composition privately with Anton Reicha at the Paris Conservatoire, unable to go to composition classes as a woman. By the 1820s she was touring France, giving concerts.

In 1842 she was made Professor of Piano at the Paris Conservatoire where she stayed for 30 years. For a decade she was paid less than the male teachers. Only after the triumphant premiere of her nonet did she demand and receive equal pay. She wrote a wide variety of piano music, but her chamber pieces are considered to be her best work.

Pauline Viardot 1821-1910

From a musical family (including her older sister, Maria Malibran) Pauline was trained by her father on the piano and in singing.

In her youth she took piano lessons with Franz Liszt and counterpoint and harmony classes with Anton Reicha. However, despite wanting to become a concert pianist, she was directed towards singing by her mother.

Pauline began composing when she was young, but it was never her intention to become a composer. Written mainly as private pieces for her students, her works were still of professional quality and Franz Liszt declared that, with Pauline Viardot, the world had finally found a woman composer of genius. Compositions include her chamber operas Le dernier sorcier and Cendrillon.

Arabella Goddard 1836–1922

Born in France to English parents, at age six Arabella was sent to Paris to study with Friedrich Kalkbrenner. Aged seven she played for myself and George much to our pleasure.

During the 1848 Revolution her family had to return to England; there, Arabella had further lessons with Lucy Anderson and Sigismond Thalberg. She was known for her ability to play recitals from memory.

Arabella was appointed a teacher at the Royal College of Music in 1883. This was the RCM’s first year of operation and Arabella was its first female professor. She composed a small number of piano pieces, including a suite of six waltzes.

Marcelina Czartoryska 1817-1894

Born into the aristocratic Polish family, the Radziwiłłs, Marcelina was taught piano by Carl Czerny in Vienna and by myself in Paris. She gave concerts across Europe, with Franz Liszt, Pauline Viardot and Henri Vieuxtemps.

From 1870 she lived in Kraków, where she gave mainly private concerts and, thanks to her artistic connections, contributed to founding Kraków’s Academy of Music in 1888.

Maria Kalergis 1822-1874

Raised in Saint Petersburg in the home of her paternal uncle, the Tsar's minister of foreign affairs, Maria received a thorough education where she evinced an early musical talent.

She was a student of mine and held salons in Paris whose guests included Liszt, Richard Wagner, de Musset, Gautier and Heine. Later, she became a hostess and a patron of the arts in Warsaw.

She was a co-founder of the Warsaw Musical Institute, now the Warsaw Conservatory and established the Warsaw Musical Society, now the Warsaw Philharmonic. Between 1857 and 1871 she made frequent appearances as a pianist.

On her death, Franz Liszt wrote his Elegy on Marie Kalergi.

Side Quests of a Light Elf

Hey gang! I've started a new fic. It is a collection of short stories about my OC that are not canon to the main fic.

This first chapter is a Star Trek crossover where Einar is on the Enterprise and befriends Bones.

Summary:

This is going to be a collection of one-shots about my OC Einar that are not canon to the main fic that they come from, The Lonely Warrior. There are various characters that I want them to meet that just don't make sense within the main timeline, and crossovers and AUs and stuff I want to write, just for funsies. There will probably be a lot of Star Trek crossover fics because that is what I am currently hyperfixating on!

Basically, I'm putting them in Situations for my own enrichment, and hopefully the enjoyment of someone else besides me.

None of these stories are necessarily connected, so don't expect continuity. And I cannot stress enough that these are Not Canon to my main fic.

I will be updating the tags as I go along because I genuinely have no idea what is going to end up here. If any chapter requires content warnings, I will put them in the Notes at the beginning.

Nie pojechałam na kick-boxing, bo po drodze musiałam zatrzymać samochód żeby się zrzygać. Bo plastrów z buprenorfiną jeszcze nie próbowałam, genialne. Super, goal-x-digger, teraz już próbowałaś wszystkich dostępnych na polskim rynku opiodiów, może czas pomyśleć o byciu wolnym człowiekiem. Tylko jak? Nie mogę jeździć do babci sama, bo to za silna pokusa, a nie mam jak jeździć z D., bo jemu wiecznie nie pasuje. Nie mogę również w ogóle do niej nie jeździć, bo ona umrze a ja będę miała wyrzuty, że jej nie odwiedzałam, a jak już to ją okradałam. Dobrze, że w tym tygodniu nie zadzwoni telefon z pytaniem: „Dzień dobry, jak tam pani abstynencja?”, tylko będę miała okazję do wszystkiego się przyznać w cztery oczy. I teraz z terapeutką będę się widywała co tydzień co też ułatwi sprawę. Dwie terapie naraz. Doszłam też do wniosku, że skoro za dni bez palenia się nagradzam to w tym wypadku nie powinno być inaczej:

Byłam na uni. Z moją psórcią, bo przecież nie zostawię jej samej w domu, jak ten wariat z dołu może znowu jakieś doniesienie zgłosić.

Zaznaczę: nie wiem po czym, czy po prostu wydoroślała, czy to wpływ sterylizacji czy może leków antydepresyjnych, które przyjmuje, czy może treningów zaleconych przez behawiorystkę - NIE WIEM. Być może to miks wszystkiego wpływa na to, że mam cichutkiego, prawie nie drącego japki pieska. Czasami ma gorsze dni, bardziej się wtedy boi i potrafi szczekać, a czasem nawet nie piśnie jak wychodzę z domu. Tylko po co ryzykować? Wzięłam małą do biblioteki.

Na tłoczną uczelnie, pełną studentów.

Może to nie był najlepszy pomysł - tak pomyślałam, wchodząc na dziedziniec, gdzie było tłoczno, a tuptający obok mnie piesek podkulił ogonek i szedł za mną jak cień.

Ale okazało się, że biblioteka była niemal pusta, bez problemu sobie tam poradziłam, a pani bibliotekarka powiedziała, że mogę z psinką jak najbardziej zanurzyć się w trzewia bibliotecznych regałów.

Super.

Po drodze do biblioteki kilkoro studentów wzdychało na widok mojego pieska. Z daleka nawiązywali kontakt wzrokowy, uśmiech słali, pochodzili, ale reagowałam natychmiast - wyjaśniałam, że ona jest w trakcie treningu, że jest lękliwym pieskiem i proszę by ją ignorować. Studenci to łapali w lot, zostawiali pieska, ewentualnie zamieniali ze mną kilka słów o pieskach i kotkach.

Problem był z pracownikami uczelni.

Znalazły nas między regałami łącznie 4 pani bibliotekarki. I ŻADNA nie uszanowana prośby o nie zwracanie się do pieska bezpośrednio, o nienawiązywanie kontaktu wzrokowego z nią, co małą stresuje, a co najgorsze - próbowały głaskać! I uspokajały, że one to mają pieski/kotki, że wiedzą jak się zachować. A ja zirytowana już syczałam, że NIEEEE, bo jeszcze chwila, a przerażony piesek się rozszczeka W BIBLIOTECE do cholery. I oczywiście panie to miały w nosie. A pies oczywiście się rozszczekiwał, bo kurde, to naturalna reakcja obronna w jej przypadku! O oczywiście przed ewentualnym dotykiem/głaskaniem robiła takie uniki, że mnie ciągnęła nagłym szarpnięciem do kolejnej alejki. I oczywiście, że z nią odchodziłam zostawiając trelące panie za sobą. A bibliotekarki jakoś nie czając, że NIE i tak za nami szły. Ech. Byłam wkurzona.

Wiem, że mam ślicznego pieska.

Ale to też piesek lękliwy...

Panie bibliotekarki przyprowadziły do biblioteki jakieś inne pracownice i pracowników uniwersytetu, żeby im pokazać pieska z daleka. Słyszałam piski zachwytu (ja wiem, że ona jest śliczna, ALE KURDE) Myślę, że nie wiedziałabym o tym, gdyby nie ciche warczenie mojej czujnej psórci przy mojej nodze... Ech...

Potem jeszcze jakiś Pan nas dorwał w czytelni, może wykładowca, nie wiem. Też nie kminił mojego NIE WOLNO, a prośbę by pieska ignorować, bo jest pieskiem lękliwym w trakcie treningu też puścił mimo uszu i padł przy małej na kolana. Wkurzył mnie. Moja Weles miała tego tak bardzo dosyć, że na tego typa nawet nie strzępiła języka tylko wskoczyła mi na kolana, oparła się przednimi łapkami o moje obojczyki i SPOJRZAŁA w oczy. "Mamo, proszę, ratuj".

No to musiałam ratować.

(Panu powiedziałam, że mi psa stresuje, żeby zostawił nas w spokoju i nie zbliżał się, bo to przekracza moje granice - ofukałam go).

Ech. Obfotografowałam co się udało mi się znaleźć, wypożyczyłam co było na temat (ale chyba dupa z tego będzie, bo nie mogę użyć materiałów publikowanych wcześniej niż 2 lata temu, a nie mieli nic w interesującym mnie obszarze z nowszą datą wypieku wydawniczego).

Wypożyczałam książki jeszcze raz tłumacząc biblotekarką, że mają zostać po drugiej stronie lady o ile nie chcą zaraz wywołać rejwu psiego jazgotu - ten argument do nich dotarł (strasznie mnie to wkurzyło - dobrostan pieska można zignorować, ale fakt, że w bibliotece zrobi się hałas to jednak najgorsza sprawa z możliwych).

Wyszłam na korytarz, akurat pusty i pomyślałam, że skorzystam z tego i zrobię małej zdjęcie pod "ścianką" z oficjalnym godłem uczelni. Moja mała studentka. <3 Taki żart w obrazku - około rok temu zdjęcie pod tym znakiem wysłałam mojej mamie. No i idziemy sobie z moim pieskiem do tej ścianki, a NAGLE zza załomu korytarza wypada facet, około 40 lat, w garniturze i drze się z daleka do mojego pieska, że "cześć, mordeczko śliczna, kici-kici". Ja zirytowana, piesek mi się momentalnie najeżył. Trochę schowała się za mnie, trochę za fotel strojący w strefie wypoczynkowej, futro jej stanęło na karku i zaczęła ciuchutko, gardłowo i ostrzegawczo warczeć na typa, który podskakiwał w naszą stronę w towarzystwie... mojego profesora z socjologii xD tego co prowadzi wykłady z charyzmą Tony'ego Starka.

Tylko zasłoniłam mojego pieska i od razu wyszłam z tą krótką informacją: NIE WOLNO, trening, o lękliwy piesek, proszę ignorować i nie nawiazywać kontaktu wzrokowego inaczej będzie szczekać.

Nie wiem czy typ mnie słuchał, bo z ekscytacji skakał jak małe dziecko wychylając się na wszystkie strony by jednak nawiązać kontakt wzrokowy z moim pisekiem, a piesek - jak zapowiedziałam - zaczął szczekać. A typ totalnie mnie ignorując "OŻ TY!! JA DO CIEBIE Z SERCEM! A TY NA MNIE SZCZEKASZ!!!??" i płynnie, na wydechu wskoczył do kibla męskiego i zamknął za sobą drzwi xD

I tak zostałam w nagłej ciszy face to face z moim profesorem socjologii, podenerwowanym psem, który ciągnął do tyłu, do wyjścia z piskiem. xD

Obliczenie było proste: kiwam głową, aby dać wykładowcy znać, że widzę, poznaję, ALE mam priorytety w obecnej sytuacji xD i na klęczki padam przy psórci, której niedawne szczekanie jeszcze niosło się echem po korytarzach. Uspokajam malucha, który szarpał się na smyczy, że wszystko okay. Głaszczę ją. Wyjaśniam jej cichym tonem (może głupio?), że chciałam jej zrobić zdjęcie, datego tu szłyśmy. Że jest bezpieczna. Ona patrzy mi głęboko w oczy tym błagalnym spojrzeniem, więc mówię jej, że "no okay, nie będzie zdjęć, wracamy do domu". Piesek już spokojny, otrzepał się, rozluźnił, ja wstaję i tym razem już mówię "dzień dobry" profesorowi. I mnie zaskakuje spojrzenie jakie mi posyła.

OMG.

Tyle czułości w spojrzeniu drugiego człowieka... WOW.

Tym bardziej jakoś nie nawykłam do odsłaniania tak wprost czułości w postawie, na obliczu mężczyzn.

OMG, to jest takie spojrzenie i taki UROK, że gdyby ten pan był o 10 lat młodszy to bym miała potężnego krasza.

To znaczy lubię typa bardzo, ale strzelam, że jednak wiek bliższy wiekowi mojego taty karze mi inaczej interpretować jego spojrzenie.

I dopiero wtedy jakoś ogarnęłam, że on często na zajęciach czy na egzaminie ze mną łapał kontakt wzrokowy, posyłał mi "mrugnięcia oczkiem" - to było cholernie takie, hymm, no właśnie urocze. Sympatyczne i sympatię budujące.

Ale dziś miałam w tej jednej chwili mindfuck.

A on do mnie wypala "nie macie teraz zjazdu, prawda?" (i totalnie ignoruje mojego pieska <3 dzięki czemu mała czuła się coraz bardziej odprężona)

Ja dalej w mindfucku, bo TYLE się wydarzyło mi w emocjach w ostatnie kilka chwil. No i SKĄD on wie z jakiego roku i z jakiej grupy ja jestem?

Ale okazało się, że wiedział.

W grupie tylu studentów zapamiętał mnie?

I co więcej - WIEDZIAŁ, że to ze mną pisał odnośnie jednej sprawy (wstawiłam się za koleżanką, tą od projektu na jego zajęcia - mi wpisał ocenę, a jej nie). Oniósł się do tego. Dla jasności - ja widzę jego nazwisko, a on widzi tylko mój awatar (a mam po prostu postać z bajki Pixara, szkocką księżniczkę :P) i numer mojego indeksu - z powodu RODO nie ma nazwisk. I on WIEDZIAŁ, że ja to ja, tak o, na korytarzu uczelni.

SZOK.

Sobie chwilę pogadaliśmy, kilka ważnych rzeczy organizacyjnych mi powiedział, kilka uwag wymieniliśmy, aż z kibla nie wyskoczył ten buc co znowu do psa mi się przyczepił. Znowu faceta prosiłam od odczepienie się, a on znowu mnie ignorował i tylko "droczył się" mowiąc mojemu warczącemu ostrzegawczo pieskowi, że "nie ładnie tak zachowywać się wobec przyjaźnie nastawionych osób".

No i ten okropny buc zabrał pana profesora (albo pan profesor Tony Stark xD zabrał buca, sama nie wiem jak to się stało), a ja pośpiesznie poczęłam ratować swojego psa.

No i wracałam do domu rozkminiając po pierwsze o DOROSŁYCH LUDZIACH nierespektujących granic opiekunów zwierząt.

A po drugie o tym, że może jednak mam ten "Swój typ", bo pan profesor to jest taki brunet o ciemnych włosach. A może to nie wyglad to mój typ, a wrażliwy (tu: pogodzony ze swoją emocjonalnością) człowiek?

NIE WIEM.

W domu musiałam psiakowi wynagrodzić te katusze specjalną karmą. xP

Z koleżanką od projektu się porozumiałam - ogarniamy ten shit. Damy radę.

A wieczór spędziliśmy kibicując mojemu chłopakowi w wyścigu. Wygrał :D :D :D . Jetem taka dumna xD Ale teraz będę sprawdzać czy zaśnie, bo te wyścigi są tak obciążające dla organizmu, normalnie ma mięśnie ramion tak czerwone i napięte, jakby wyciskał sztangi.

so uh. the final chapter of my fic is a Lot longer than it was before. this one chapter is longer than either of my other two fics.

it was finished but. i wasnt happy with it. so i rewrote the ending.

dont worry! it will still be posted tomorrow!! i just need my beta reader (@frogofalltime) to give it a look and then make any necessary edits. im much happier with it now tbh, and am considering adding more to the previous chapters too since they feel kinda lackluster in comparison lmao. but not committing to that just yet. we will see what the reception is for chapter 4 and the fic as a whole.
