If the Marauders and Snape were marine animals

I literally had a light bulb moment out of the blue!

The Marauders are like dolphins whereas Snape is like a shark. Dolphins are usually painted as innocent and lovable creatures, while sharks like great white sharks are demonized and seen as monsters.

However, dolphins have underrated mean streaks and travel in packs. Whereas sharks tend to keep to themselves and some species can be really friendly with humans (re. the lady petting lemon shark) .

Who else agrees with me?!

Edit: I read these paragraphs about dolphins and I am seeing even more parallels

Contrary to Flipper stereotypes, dolphins are far from innocent. But Heithaus says they pick their battles with care. “We do know that dolphins will attack and kill small sharks,” he says, adding that they will also kill other large fish and small porpoises that pose no immediate threat. They don’t usually eat these victims though, and the altercations often happen when the dolphins appear to be socializing. “You can’t read intent, but my guess is in a lot of cases it isn’t just, ‘Whoops: did that happen?’” Heithaus says.

If we’re talking about one adult shark fighting one adult dolphin, then yes – chances are high that the shark will win out as it has greater strength and weapons at its disposal in this situation. However, if more than one dolphin is involved or they team up to take on a single shark then things get more complicated; dolphins rely on coordination when hunting prey together and what works against some opponents can be used to their advantage when pitted against others.

Lust born Subject 96th has been experimented on since He was hatched to the point that His body can no longer reject any creature's DNA until a Miracle happened, where He broke out of the tank due to the Robotic Figure and escaped to Toxic Disposal which is where He got accidentally impaled by Venom Sword and being around radioactive around him causing him to mutant even further

Later on, He was raised and trained by Cryptid Trios to become their Ally and inject more DNA into him (specifically Turtle to slow down Aging, Chimps for Sociality, and Dolphins to boost Hedonism) but They avoided giving him Human DNA as it can make him Hesitation. They have given his codename "Lust"

Once They're finished training him, New Sinners went on raiding Heavenly Yard and failed. Lust punishment is getting sent to the world where every Woman there can kick his ass which is Gensokyo

Once He was sent there, he struggled to survive for the first few weeks but He was eventually able to adapt and finally gain Human DNA which caused Lust to grow hair and be able to talk in Human Language

Later on, Lust got taken into Eientei so He could be studied by the Lunarian there, a year later, Lust got sent to the Lunar Capital as a Messager while He fought one of the princess there in the usual Touhou manner, He was able to inject Lunarian DNA but Lunarian Blood is so Pure, It's completely turn him into a young female humanoid

A few days later after getting sent back to Gensokyo, Lust realized why it had been so weak for the past year as it had almost no sin power at all and it couldn't attract anybody in either form as He/She either too hideous or too young

this gives Lust the idea when He/She sees the Prismriver sisters performance that it can gain fans who will love and worship her in humanoid form (basically simping but not in a sexual way, it's in the cute way)

After another year of Performance, Lust got sent back to her homeworld where he along with other New Sinners continued what they left off but now stronger and smarter than ever

Lust gets into a fight with Kayo Sudou where He terrorizes Jakoku and They both fight to the death with Mutual Kills

Later on Sloth (who has no soul) gets sent to Hellish Yard to get Lust and Wrath's souls back

After the War ended, the Trios gave other Sinners a choice to either stay with them and face their consequences or leave for their punishment turned new homeworld, Lust chose Latter

but When Lust got sent back, He realized this isn't his Gensokyo as He saw a young girl with a book that could summon all the people that he had met and reskins of them

this drove Lust to jealousy and hated that young girl able to get everyone to love her while He took years to struggle to even ally with one of them so a new Conflict begins

Y’all need to calm down. I didn’t even start my education until I was 26. I didn’t finish until I was 28. I spent the years of my life that I was in my physical peak (meaning health) having insane adventures with my friends across the country. You think your life is over when you’re 25, when in reality, that’s when your brain is fully developed and is the perfect time to settle down and decide what you want to do. You guys are too scared to live. Take a fucking chance once in a while, but especially when you’re young. I’m almost 30 now and I managed to get by without committing to any particular path at 18 or even 25. And I don’t feel like that time was wasted. I have regrets like everyone else but probably less than someone who got into debt at the age of 18 after feeling forced to choose a life path a year earlier. I understand it’s the dream some of us were sold, but for the next generation—don’t do that. For years the toughest choice I had to make was which states, cities, and towns I should visit/settle for the winter months, or whether to go east or west that day. I can’t promise you’ll be fine just meandering in whatever ways appeal to you for however long, I’m just telling you that I am. If you are still one of those people who believes your life is over at 25, why are you not spending your adult years up to that point having fun, exploring, experiencing new things, and LIVING?

This is a picture of me on a freight train and I think I was about 22 or 23. Super beautiful ride where I passed miles and miles of blossoming fruit trees and beehives. The train sided here and we got off and skipped rocks for a few minutes. I’m not saying that everyone needs to be a straight up vagabond like I was, but you can do anything. Anything you want! Work a seasonal job, save money, go to Thailand! Live cheap and travel! Work part time, live in some shitty apartment and write your novel, or join a band! Go to Europe and stay in hostels! Drive around and visit state and national parks with your dog! You can be a traveler, you can be a starving artist. In fact, that is the best age to do it, both to manage your own time, and because people look at you and see pure potential. No one is gonna be like “when are you gonna get yourself a husband” when you’re twenty. Have fun and stop wasting your time!

The black dog at the top is my dog JJ. I bought him for $20 from some crack heads in Florida when he was 8 weeks and I was 18. He’s turning 11 this year! I think he is happy that we have settled cause he’s a lazy boi. All of these pictures were taken before I turned 20. I was 19 and had already been all over the country, all the way west and all the way down to the keys. That “hobo family photo” drawing with the stick frame? People saw it, my friends saw it, and they knew I had been there. We left our tags, sometimes with the date or direction that we were going, so we could keep track of each other in a way. Sometimes we left cans of food, or a few beers. We had no phones, but we had notebooks, instruments, sometimes a CD player or cheap MP3 player. We carried little hammocks and tiny stoves sometimes. We had our sleeping bags and dog food and each other. I was constantly running into my friends without even planning on it, or making new friends with whatever kids I ran into if I vibed with them. I have known the guys in the Hawaiian shirts literally forever, happened to run into them in key west while they were trying to dress “in disguise” to blend in lol. We camped out on a beach in the middle keys for New Years, drinking and making tacos, swimming, waking up to seeing sharks and dolphins and stingrays swim by us. It was magical. Dude with the tequila bought his own home recently, and him and his gf rebuilt it, did the plumbing and electricity, and painted every single room to their own tastes. We might all look like bums in these pictures, but we are all in our late 20s-early 30s now and are literally fucking fine. I never felt like I was “behind” my friends. Most of them are not even doing as well as I am now, and the amount of life experience and people skills I made in even one year of my life living like this was worth more than five of them working a minimum wage job, or dropping out of college, or whatever. It was certainly hard sometimes, but it gave me confidence in myself and the ability to adapt to any situation.

Sperm whale dies after stranding near shoreline at Ardersier

BBC News - January 7, 2020

A sperm whale has died after stranding close to a shore of the Moray Firth in the Highlands. The animal, thought to be a male up to 20m (66ft) in length, got into difficulty at Ardersier near Inverness. Members of the Scottish Marine Animal Strandings Scheme and British Divers Marine Life Rescue were at the scene.

In August 2008, a 12m (40ft) adult sperm whale died after stranding in shallow water in the Moray Firth at Arturlie Point close to Inverness. The Coastguard was alerted to the latest stranding at about 09:00. Scottish Marine Animal Strandings Scheme (SMASS) said the animal died at about 11:30.

The whale was believed to be an adult male weighing about 25 tonnes. A spokeswoman for British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR) said: 

"Unfortunately because it is a sperm whale there is often not a lot we can do in these situations. They are a deep water species and their bodies can't cope with being stranded. After about two hours out of the water the damage is irreparable."

Dr Andrew Brownlow, of Scotland's Rural College's Scottish Marine Animal Strandings Scheme, said it was a "tragic situation". He said: "With animals of this size there is no hope for them to be refloated and unfortunately no method for euthanising the animal."

Dr Brownlow said sperm whales are found in deep waters off the north of Scotland and Norway and travel south from there to feed and breed around the Azores. He said whales that get "lost" on those journeys can get into difficulty in North Sea and Moray Firth where there is not enough food for them, and it is harder for the animals to navigate.

The scientist said the whale looked to be "thin" and in poor condition. A post mortem examination is due to be carried out on the beach on Wednesday, before arrangements are made to dispose of the whale. Volunteers from Whale and Dolphin Conservation, the Coastguard along with Army personnel from nearby Fort George provided assistance at the scene of the stranding.

Sperm whales are one of the world's deepest diving mammals. Males can grow to more than 18m (59ft) in length and females to more than 12m (40ft). There have been successful rescues of large whales in Scotland. In January last year, a whale spotted in difficulty in Loch Eribol near Durness in Sutherland managed to get itself free. It was thought to have got stuck on a sand bar.

And in January 2016, a humpback whale was freed from fishing gear used to catch prawns in Loch Eriboll. The 12m-long animal had become entangled in creels. Members of BDMLR managed to free the mammal from the ropes and guided it to safety.

The Promises I Made (2019 Edition)

For the past thirteen years, I’ve spent every New Year’s Eve compiling a list of fifty promises I intend to keep or fulfill over the next twelve months. The results have been truly amazing, and I have kept some promises I never thought I could. 2019 was… a nightmare that I can barely believe I survived, but I still kept some promises that I honestly did not expect I ever could.

This year, for New Year’s, there will be a new set of promises for to me keep, but here are the old ones, for review!

The Promises I Made (2019 Edition)

1) Be more proactive about tracking and following up with struggling students to decrease the number of students who drop from my class when they realize they cannot pass. Status: Somewhat broken? I tried really hard to be proactive with my students; however, there were some massive issues outside the classroom this year that made it extremely difficult to keep the focus on the students. When administration drags your attention away from the class, there is not a lot you can do…

2) Find a place to put in volunteer hours because uhhhh like this is actually important to my work evaluation and I definitely need something to write in that section… Yikes, this spring is my last chance to do this!! @_@ Status: Kept. I volunteered with the Utah Shakespeare Festival and it was super fun!

3) Install the fire escape window in the Utah house, no matter how much it might cost, because I can’t get a totally unrelated tenant in that basement without said window… Status: Somewhat kept. Okay. This one is a LONG story, but to be fair to me, I worked my ASS off to try and make this happen; just every single thing in the world prevented me from completing this promise, up to and including the city telling me I needed a permit AFTER I had already dug a massive hole in the ground for the window…

4) Buy sod to add grass to the front portion of the lawn so that it no longer looks like garbage. Status: Broken, but I did buy grass seed and put that out there. Unfortunately only some of it sprouted, but there is indeed SOME grass now growing there…

5) Fix the bricks near the windowsills on the Utah house to prevent long-term damage. Status: Broken. After dealing with the stupid window disaster, I had no time for this at all.

6) Get a watering system for my roses at the Utah house because I think my bro is probably killing them and that’s just not cool. Status: Broken, see above.

7) Work on the patio at the Utah house before it just flat out falls down. Status: Somewhat broken. Again, I tried to make progress on this—I called a patio guy to come out and assess how much it would cost to fix the patio—but the price I was quoted was so high that there was nothing I could do at the time.

8) Paint the stairwell so that there’s no chance of anything like lead paint or asbestos being exposed. Status: Broken. The leftover wallpaper glue continues to confound me…

9) Trim the backyard bushes so the neighbors don’t hate us anymore… Status: Broken. We trimmed a few bushes and at least got to the trees out front, but definitely a majority were left uncared for.

10) Move into a new house in Texas where I can get real internet, please for the love of god… Status: Kept. I moved into a very nice house with no scorpions!

11) Save money for my upcoming trip to Japan! 2020 baby! Status: Uhhh, broken. I’m not sure how I thought I’d be able to move into a new house AND save money for an international trip at the same time…

12) Get my wisdom tooth removed because it’s still there and still killing me, yikessss. Status: Broken. AUGH. I’m an idiot.

13) Make an appointment with an eye doctor for like the first time in years. Good job, Yehn, good job. Status: Kept. I got my glasses fixed and even got a new pair of glasses too!

14) Get my prescriptions refilled because I’m dwindling on asthma medicine and like… I could die from this… I should never have been left to care for myself; I’m not mature enough for this responsibility… Status: Kept, surprisingly. But I still need a new doctor because the last one I was going to wouldn’t give me any refills…

15) FINISH THE GIVEAWAY PRIZES I PROMISED LAST YEAR because holy shit I am incompetent and the worst and everyone has permission to hate me for starting things and never finishing them, fuck. Status: Broken. So broken. I am the worst.

16) Go dolphin watching in the Gulf for real this time. Seriously, it’s $10 Yehn, you can do this. Status: Kept, amazingly. It wasn’t as impressed as hoped; however, there was a lovely sunset.

17) Return to the Channel Islands to take better pictures. D; Status: Broken. T_T

18) Level all my classes to 70 in FFXIV before next expansion, please. Status: Somewhat broken. I didn’t have everything to 70 before the expansion, but I kind of feel like I should get credit for this one, because HEY, look at me now:

19) Organize and properly label all the photos on my computer so that I’m no longer desperately combing through folder and folder in blank confusion, looking for a single picture in a sea of thousands… Status: Kept. It took me like eight hours of work, but I actually did this.

20) Update Home and a Half more than once? PLEASE??? The guilt I feel over this currently is crushing. Status: Broken. And the guilt grows…

21) Complete the online American Literature class I am designing on time and with no corrections needed. Status: Kept. I’m counting this as kept even though TECHNICALLY there was one thing I forgot to finish and it came back and bit me in the ass; however, I was approved with no corrections needed.

22) Earn 100% completion for Kingdom Hearts III. So excited! Status: Broken. Um… This just didn’t happen.

23) Update my calendar with important dates—holidays, birthdays, etc.—and be productive about sending cards and well-wishes. Status: Somewhat kept. I wasn’t any better about sending cards really, but I did at least save all the birthdays in my phone so I remember them.

24) Get the garbage disposal in the Texas house fixed ASAP so I don’t have to wash the dishes by hand anymore because I absolutely hate that particular chore. Status: Kept. Then I moved, so it didn’t even matter.

25) Finish all the books my coworkers and friends bought for me recently so I can thank them for their recommendations! Status: Broken. So broken.

26) Actually move into my new place instead of leaving it completely undecorated and lifeless. Status: Remarkably, kept. Nothing has plastic on it, unlike at my old house where the nightstand didn’t get unwrapped even after two years of living there lol.

27) Try hard to get Creative Writing into a different area of the general ed. core so that more people will enroll in it. Status: Kept. I’m counting this because I did my darn best, but we are still waiting on the state to tell us whether or not the class will be accepted.

28) Get caught up on my Ebird reports, even the old, old, old ones I never put in because I was slacking. Status: Kept, actually. Whoo.

29) Throw away/return/sort all the stacks of old mail in the house (OMGGGG they’ve made me look like paper hoarder and I’m nootttt). Status: Broken. There’s just… a lot of papers to go through…

30) Clean up the garage before moving so that I don’t have to fight spiders to move when the time comes. Status: Broken, in that I did not clean up the garage in advance and did, in fact, have to fight spiders when it came time to move.

31) Find a way to boost grading productivity so that each class takes only two days to grade, maximum. Status: Somewhat kept. I was definitely better this year than last year; however, I really think the “two days per class” thing was too optimistic, so for the future semester, I allotted myself three days per class and I think it will work better.

32) Go to a totally new restaurant and try their food. Status: Kept. We went to a Mexican restaurant and I had trompo tacos (al pastor) which is probably not anything special to anyone else but it was my first time so lol.

33) Cancel old credit cards to make sure my credit is good before trying to buy a house (although I just checked my credit score and I’m in the great range already, so this is mostly for posterity’s sake). Status: Broken. But it didn’t affect my loan, so I guess it was okay. And it ended up being good I didn’t cancel my Best Buy card because I was able to get good financing on the new appliances I needed for my house.

34) Get official contracts from my tenants so I can use my rental income in my next loan calculation. Status: Broken, but I ended up not using that as part of the loan calculation anyway >_> so…

35) Talk to an HR rep about my retirement savings so that I can consolidate all my retirement accounts into one. (Man, look at all these ADULTING promises.) Status: Broken. Look at me failing all these adulting promises.

36) Really finish decorating my office so it looks super cute and all my students want to visit me. Status: Broken, but I think it sucks that I have to write this because it was really not my fault I couldn’t finish decorating my office. Our offices were all moved and disrupted by building remodels so I spent the entire year basically working out of a couple cardboard boxes.

37) Not sign up for ANY more new responsibilities at work in the spring semester. This is the biggest challenge. D; Status: Kept, by technicality. I was able to avoid signing up for anything new in SPRING… But fall… was a whole other story. XD

38) Migrate all the rest of my books to the new Texas house instead of leaving them in Utah… SOMEHOW. Status: Kept. I’m going to count this as kept. The only books left at the Utah house are my manga—I managed to bring literally every other book, which is very impressive considering I had only my small Camaro with its tiny truck space.

39) Use my twitter account more often to make it worth following. I will try!! Status: Kept… sorta? I mean, since I didn’t use the account AT ALL before, making even one Twitter post kind of counts as using it more, right? >_>

40) Keep my hair cut nicely so I look less like a mess (than I really am). Status: Somewhat broken. Although I think I got my hair cut more often this year than before, I don’t think I looked any less like a mess. XD

41) Successfully find a bridesmaid dress for my friend’s wedding that matches the rest of the wedding party. Status: Actually kept! It was incredible. The wedding I was in was even featured in a magazine because of how pretty it was!

42) Make sure my skin is in good condition for the wedding so I don’t look like a disturbing ghost… Status: Kept? I mean, in the end, looking like a ghost ended up being the whole point since it was a Halloween themed wedding so I kind of won either way.

43) Complete my BNHA manga collection. Since my bro bought me a bunch of the volumes for Christmas, I might as well. Status: Broken… I bought like… one volume. XD

44) See a groove-billed ani. (It’s another type of bird.) Status: Broken. Very illusive bird. T_T

45) Respond to messages, asks, and comments more quickly. I promise I’m not ignoring people… D; Status: Um, broken. I left many people on read this year, sorry.

46) Lose ten pounds so that I feel more fit and comfy. Status: Broken. I didn’t exercise at all this year, uff.

47) Pay down credit card debt by at least 1/3. Yikesssss, I really need to do this quick. Status: Broken. It’s hard to pay down a credit card when you pour all your money into buying a new house…

48) I will finally fucking finish that chapter 73 analysis of Noragami… I swear to god… Status: Broken. Uh yeah. This didn’t happen. V_V

49) Reach 1700 followers on Tumblr. You should follow me—I’m only marginally a waste of time and space! Status: Kept. Over 2500 followers now!

50) I will keep these promises. LOLLLLL. Status: Somewhat kept/somewhat broken. One year I really will keep them all…

Please 2020… just let me rest…

Pollution affects everything on planet earth irrespective of their presence. Every day we go through the newspapers and magazine stories about its adverse effects causing irreplaceable damages to the Earth and it is increasing with each year passing. Pollution is negatively affecting the lives of not only humankind but equally causing adverse effects to other living organisms like animals, plants, aquatic organisms.

Types of pollution:

Water Pollution

Some polluted water looks muddy, smells bad, and has garbage floating in it. Some polluted water looks clean, but is filled with harmful chemicals you can’t see or smell.

Polluted water is unsafe for drinking and swimming. Some people who drink polluted water are exposed to hazardous chemicals that may make them sick years later. Others consume bacteria and other tiny aquatic organisms that cause disease.

Sometimes, polluted water harms people indirectly. They get sick because the fish that live in polluted water are unsafe to eat. They have too many pollutants in their flesh.

Nutrient pollution is caused by wastewater, sewage, and fertilizers. The high levels of nutrients in these sources end up in bodies of water and promote algae and weed growth, which can make the water undrinkable and depleted oxygen causing aquatic organisms to die.

Pesticides and herbicides applied to crops and residential areas concentrate in the soil and are carried to the groundwater by rainwater and runoff. For these reasons anytime someone drills a well for water it must be checked for pollutants.

Industrial waste is one of the main causes of water pollution, by creating primary and secondary pollutants including sulphur, lead and mercury, nitrates and phosphates, and oil spills.

*In developing countries around 70% of their solid waste is dumped directly into the ocean or sea.

-Water pollution is a serious threat to humans, animals, and aquatic life.

The effects of water pollution depend on which chemicals are being dumped where. Bodies of water that are near urbanized areas tend to be heavily polluted by dumbing of garbage and chemicals.

By far the biggest consequence of water pollution is the death of aquatic creatures, which can disrupt the entire food chain.

Air Pollution

Sometimes, air pollution is visible. A person can see dark smoke pour from the exhaust pipes of large trucks or factories, for example. More often, however, air pollution is invisible.

Polluted air can be dangerous. It can make people’s eyes burn and make them have difficulty breathing. It can also increase the risk of lung cancer.

Most air pollution is not natural. It comes from burning fossil fuelscoal, oil, and natural gas. When gasoline is burned to power cars and trucks, it produces carbon monoxide, a colorless, odorless gas. The gas is harmful in high concentrations, or amounts. City traffic produces highly concentrated carbon monoxide.

Volcanic gases, such as sulfur dioxide, can kill nearby residents and make the soil infertile for years.

Cars and factories produce other common pollutants, including nitrogen oxide, sulfur dioxide, and hydrocarbons. These chemicals react with sunlight to produce smog, a thick fog or haze of air pollution.

Smog makes breathing difficult, especially for children and older adults. Some cities that suffer from extreme smog issue air pollution warnings.

When air pollutants such as nitrogen oxide and sulfur dioxide mix with moisture, they change into acids. They then fall back to earth as acid rain.

Noise pollution

Acid rain can kill all the trees in a forest. It can also devastate lakes, streams, and other waterways. When lakes become acidic, fish can’t survive.

Even though humans can't see or smell noise pollution, it still affects the environment. Noise pollution happens when the sound coming from planes, industry or other sources reaches harmful levels. Research has shown that there are direct links between noise and health, including stress-related illnesses, high blood pressure, speech interference, hearing loss. For example, a study bythe WHO Noise Environmental Burden on Disease working group found that noise pollution may contribute to hundreds of thousands of deaths per year by increasing the rates of coronary heart disease. Under the Clean Air Act, the EPA can regulate machine and plane noise.

Underwater noise pollution coming from ships has been shown to upset whales' navigation systems and kill other species that depend on the natural underwater world. Noise also makes wild species communicate louder, which can shorten their lifespan.

Autopsy on blue whale calf paints a sad picture of ocean pollution

It's not everyday that a blue whale washes ashore in Japan, so when one did researchers seized on the opportunity to determine how the member of the largest animal species in existence lived and died.

The beaching nine months ago in Kamakura, Kanagawa Prefecture, was exceptionally rare, being the only time the endangered species has done so in local waters.

The dead whale calf measured about 10 meters. An adult blue whale can reach lengths of 21 to 26 meters.

Local authorities initially pondered how to dispose of the carcass that stunned summer visitors to the Yuigahama beach in August 2018, but Yuko Tajima, a curator at the National Museum of Nature and Science who is an expert on marine mammalogy, insisted on an autopsy.

The first confirmed arrival of a blue whale on Japanese shores provided a precious opportunity for researchers to directly study the biology of the animal.

Scientists determined the calf was male and only a few months old. Although the calf likely died at sea before washing ashore, it was not clear how that happened as there were no visible signs of injury or disease.

Ayaka Matsuda, a post-doctorate researcher affiliated with the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, was among those who studied the whale.

To ascertain where the calf came from, Matsuda looked into the ratio of the radionuclide carbon-14 used in radiocarbon dating that was found in the baleen plate that whales use as a filter to gather food.

She found strong evidence that the animal inhabited waters in the Oyashio current that originates in the Arctic Ocean and flows southward along the Chishima island chain into the northern Pacific.

Based on the finding, Matsuda said it seemed likely the calf had lived off the coast of Iwate Prefecture and in waters further north.

COMPARING GENETIC INFORMATION

Shin Nishida, an associate professor of biology at the University of Miyazaki in Kyushu, analyzed genetic information found in cells taken from the whale.

Researchers in other countries have already collected genetic information of blue whales found off the west coasts of North and South America as well as the Indian and Antarctic Oceans.

A comparison found that the baby whale was in a group similar to blue whales that inhabit waters off the West Coast of North America.

"We will probably be able to specify in more detail the genetic characteristics of blue whales that approach Japan if we can continue to accumulate such data," Nishida said.

Other researchers were concerned that the blue whale had not even survived a year.

Mari Ochiai, a specially appointed assistant professor of environmental chemistry at Ehime University, discovered traces of the toxic insecticide DDT as well as polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB), another toxin, in the fatty skin and liver of the calf.

Most nations now ban the production and use of those chemicals, but the levels found were similar to that found in blue whales off the coast of California.

"It likely was transmitted from the ecosystem to the next generation through mother's milk, so there are concerns that the effects of chemical pollution may last longer than previously thought," Ochiai said.

300 WHALES BEACHED ANNUALLY

While the beaching was the first by a blue whale in Japan, roughly 300 whales of other types, as well as dolphins, wash ashore every year.

Usually it is because the animals are sick or got lost pursuing food sources in the ocean.

Tajima said that the cause of death is only determined in about 20 percent of cases.

While it is still unclear what effect pollutants such as DDT and PCB had, researchers have determined that high levels of pollutants found in finless porpoises captured in Japanese waters often led to a high incidence of parasites in the lungs of such animals.

"If the beaching was some form of warning from the whales, it is the obligation of humans to determine how those animals lived and how they died," Tajima said.

The results of research into the blue whale will be displayed at a special exhibition titled "Mammals 2--Struggle for Life" being held at the National Museum of Nature and Science in Tokyo's Ueno district until June 16.

 1) Be more proactive about tracking and following up with struggling students to decrease the number of students who drop from my class when they realize they cannot pass.

2) Find a place to put in volunteer hours because uhhhh like this is actually important to my work evaluation and I definitely need something to write in that section… Yikes, this spring is my last chance to do this!! @_@

That despite the U. Ks government’s ban on cosmetic microbeads; the amount of plastic microfibres released into the ocean from our clothes has reached half a million tonnes a year.

These fibres cause ocean pollution on a microbiological level; entering the food chain at the bottom; with such toxicity that a dolphin calves are poisoned from their mother’s milk.

Our landfills are clogged with wearable clothes laying along side plastic bags and food waste.

Fashion has become a perishable.

Needing disposal of when it is past its socially constructed use-by date; pushed by retailers and magazines, driving customers to stuff their wardrobes full.

Plastic is a type of synthetic or man-made polymer; similar in many ways to natural resins found in trees and other plants.

The history of plastic goes as far back more than 100 years; however, when compared to other materials, plastics are relatively modern and new. Over the century, the usage of plastic has enabled society to make huge technological advances. Although plastics are thought of as a modern invention, there have always been “natural polymers” such as amber, tortoise shells and animal horns. These materials behaved like today’s manufactured plastics and were often used similarly to the way plastics are currently applied. 

Plastic has been of use for daily tasks to our most unusual needs, and have increasingly provided the performance characteristics that fulfil consumer needs at all levels.

These coffee pods can take up to 500 years to break down because of the plastic that’s inside them, and it is releasing harmful amounts of methane gas as it is breaking down.

Plastic toothbrush

3.5 billion toothbrushes are sold worldwide each year. Most get lost in the recycling process and end up in a landfill or make their way into rivers and oceans. These toothbrushes are made from polypropylene plastic and nylon and can take up to 500 years or more to decompose.

How does plastic get into the ocean?

There are more than eight million tonnes of plastics that enter the world’s oceans every year, and here are some common ways:

Through rivers

According to the scientific research that I have found on the internet, it suggests that as much as 90% of marine plastic debris enter our ocean through 10 of the world’s rivers.

This doesn’t involve plastics being dumped directly into rivers, although this does happen. However, due to its lightweight nature, it’s easy for plastics en route to landfill to escape containment. This can then enter waterways and eventually, our oceans. 

From boats

An estimated 20% of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch trash comes from ships and offshore oil rigs. This can happen from the people cutting loose their nets on a fishing trip to large cargo ships losing of dumping significant quantities of waste.

From factories

There isn’t enough care when factories producing, transporting or disposing of plastics, and therefore, this contributes significantly to the amount of marine debris.

Down the drain

To put simply, the journey of plastics to the ocean can all start in our bathroom. A high profile example involves the recent banning of microbeads by several countries. These tiny plastic balls are found in common items such as exfoliants, shower gels and glitter-based makeup. However, microbeads aren’t the only culprits. Cotton buds, sanitary products and face wipes often contain plastic, and some will escape cleansing operation at wastewater plants and make it to the ocean.

What happens to the plastic at the Great Pacific Garbage Patch?

There are two properties of plastic that make it such a visible problem in our ocean:

It’s light - many plastic objects won’t sink.

It’s durable - because plastic is relatively new, we don’t know how long it takes to break down.

The majority of the plastic in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch will simply float there. They will gradually be worn down by the waves and sunlight. However, even when this happens, the plastic doesn’t simply disappear entirely. Instead, it becomes microplastics. According to scientific results, it is believed that estimated of microplastics makeup 94% of the object count at the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. 

What are the dangers of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch?

The obvious answer that we know is that plastic pollution is killing marine life. An estimate of 1 million seabirds and 100,000 wildlife mammals are affected every year, as well as many other species. For example, sea turtles often mistake plastic bags for prey such as jellyfish. Furthermore, abandoned fishing lines, fishing nets and equipment can ensnare and drown dolphins, porpoises and whales.

This is obviously the bigger problems we are seeing, and how can people expect there would be no danger to the wildlife when humans aren’t free from the potentials dangers of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. Microplastics have been found in the stomachs of nearly half of the most important species for global fisheries, and this could simply mean that we could be eating our own trash. If these plastics make their way up the food chain and into our bodies, there are concerns over potential health implications.

How many birds die from plastic pollution?

A lot of the data regarding birds and plastics comes from studies of seabirds, as the presence of plastic in the ocean has garnered a lot of media attention. The number of seabirds dying as a result of plastic is currently estimated at 1 million a year. This shocking statistic becomes even more worrying when we consider just how quickly this problem has grown. In 1960, fewer than 5% of seabirds were found to have plastic in their stomachs, but this number had rocketed to 80% in 1980. Based on this research, and modern studies, it’s expected that by 2050, 99% of all sea bird species will be ingesting plastic. 

Why do birds eat plastic?

It looks like food - small particles of plastic floating in the ocean can be easily mistaken for prey.

It smells like food - studies show that the smell of krill feeding on the algae that coat marine plastic debris is similar to natural scents that many seabirds follow when hunting for food.

It floats - plastic’s lightweight nature is also a huge part of the problem. Albatross species, in particular, feed by skimming low over the water and inadvertently consume plastic as a result.

What happens to birds that consume plastic?

The impacts of plastic consumption for birds depend on what they eat. Some birds die quickly as a result of sharp plastics puncturing their internal organs, but others may starve to death as they feel full from eating plastic but receive no nutritional benefits.

This could also be a huge problem as due to the amount they’re eating, birds are at risk of toxic effects of the chemicals that coat plastics. Moreover, adults birds that leave nests to hunt often return with plastic they have mistaken for food and feed it to their chicks. 

What happens to birds that become entangled in plastic?

This really depends on where and how the birds become entangled.

Drowning in nets - for gannets, penguins and other birds that dive for their food, becoming caught in underwater plastic will mean they can’t get back to the surface, and so they drown.

Risk of infection - if the plastic is tightly wrapped it can cut the bird, leading to infection.

Inability to move - entanglement can mean that birds are unable to escape natural predators, or find food themselves.

How does plastic affect marine life?

Around 100,000 marine mammals die every year as a result of plastic pollution. This can include whales, dolphins, porpoises, seals and sea lions.

Why do they eat plastic?

A plastic bag ballooned with water can look a lot like squid, or other prey, to the seals and marine mammals that hunt them. However, even species that don’t identify them by sight aren’t completely safe. For example, toothed whales, and many species of dolphins use sophisticated sonar-type techniques called echolocation to find their prey. According to research, it is believed that unnatural objects such as plastic waste can confuse this sonar, and are incorrectly interpreted as food.

Single-use plastics or often referred to as disposable plastics are commonly used for plastic packaging and this can include items such as grocery bags, food packaging, bottles, straws, containers, cups, and cutlery where they are intended to be used only once before they are thrown away or recycled.

How long does a plastic product take to biodegrade?

Plastic is still relatively new compared to other materials and although plastic has revolutionized how we store our food and packaging - the downside of it is plastic items can take up to 1000 years to decompose in a landfill. But plastic bags we use in our everyday life take 20 years to decompose, while plastic bottles can take up to 450 years.

Which countries have the highest/lowest rate of plastic pollution?

According to what I have found on the internet, a team of researchers in the United States and Australia led by Jenna Jambeck analyzed plastic waste levels in the world’s oceans. 

In 2010, 8.8 million metric tons of plastic waste came from China with an estimated 5.53 million tons of it ending up in the ocean. The United States is also polluting the oceans with plastics; however, at a much lower rate than China.

How has it affected the environment?

The world is currently producing nearly 300 million tons of plastic each year - a significant amount of which could end up in our ocean.

Not only is plastic harmful to the environment and oceans, but it is harmful to wildlife as well. According to the Ocean Conservancy, plastic has been found in more than 60 per cent of all seabirds and 100 per cent of sea turtle species.

What is being done to tackle plastic use?

To tackle plastic being used, many countries such as Canada, Costa Rica, Great Britain, Greece and many more have ban plastic straws. Moreover, many businesses such as Alaska Airline will be removing all non-recyclable plastic stir straws and citrus picks and replacing them with sustainable, marine-friendly alternatives on all domestic and international flights. Plastic bags have also been ban in many countries such as Australia, Boston, Canada, Chile, China, Costa Rica, and many more.

What are the creative responses to plastic use?

There have been some very creative responses in using plastic and turning it into something creative. For example, washed ashore rallies volunteers to clean beaches are using collected debris to create larger-than-life sculptures of the marine life affected by ocean trash and teaching students about the impacts of marine debris through art.

Another creative process is transforming lost fishing nets into energy. The Fishing for Energy partnership helps fishermen properly dispose of old and abandoned fishing nets and other gear - much of it plastic - at no cost to the fishermen. In addition to donating their own worn-out nets, some fishermen also directly retrieve lost fishing gear out of the ocean. After being collected and sorted, any metal parts are recycled, and everything else is converted into electricity, with roughly one ton of old nets producing enough electricity to power a house for 25 days.

What are the long-term consequences of plastic use?

The plastic that pollutes our ocean and waterways have severe impacts on our environment and our economy. For example, seabirds, whales, sea turtles and other marine life are eating plastic pollution and dying from choking, intestinal blockage and starvation.

The Year of Keroro Challenge Update 5 (Yes Sir)

We’re Back! Actually this one was much easier than the last when I actually had the chance to work on it. Either way I’m going to be doing this a little bit differently, the end result will still be the same it’s more a difference in the production process so it will be easier to catch up.

On that note I had a bit of a surprise, I thought I was going to have several bits of writing to cover between the “Room of Reflection” and Labbie’s dry erase board on uses for bread crusts, but now it turns out both of those were more or less covered by Funimation (A few of the room of reflection notes seem to have been missed) so I have a whole bunch of unexpected free space now which I’d like to use to thank everyone who has been following my updates....And to give a special mention to DeadofFrogs who has been commenting on all of them, I just wanted to let you know that I do read and appreciate your comments, even if I can’t always think of something to say in response.

Also I somehow forgot to bring this up last time but in regards to episode 22, has anyone else realised this? It’s a bit odd that Tamama made such a big deal out of being leader since, unless he’d have to cross Momoka in the process, he technically has an army of sorts at his disposal already in the form of Momoka’s bodyguards (speaking of which, I wonder how he kept everything from that episode from getting back to her)

Episode 29: Oh goodness this episode is just full of fun little easter eggs....And Keroro’s acting, that’s just hilarious. Either way the first is Keroro parody Chigusa Tsukikage, the acting mentor from the shoujo manga “Glass Mask” who has a similar hairstyle to the one Keroro wears in the episode to hide the burn marks on her face. Rabbie’s bit about uses for bread crusts is a nod to a trope in Japan that a staple food for poor characters is the bread crusts that bakeries throw away when making their sandwiches (They sell crust-less sandwiches)

I remember somebody mentioning that the members of the Newspaper club are likely inspired by the human children from Doraemon (less Nobita), and I can sort of see that; but more than that has anyone else noticed the small animal they test the device on looks a bit like Ryo-ohki from the Tenchi series? No really, look at it.

Episode 30: Now let’s all be honest with our ourselves, this episode represents our worst case scenario when meeting our online friends; we all say it’s finding out the other person is really a creep twice our age sporting a moose hat or a serial killer or something like that, but after several years we can assume such people would have lost patience. No, secretly the thing we dread the most is having the other person meet the people we see everyday and reference all the times we’ve vented our frustrations over things they’ve done. 

Oh! One thing I noticed was that Taruru mentions being the representative of the 4th year group, not the kindergarten group....granted that doesn’t really tell us that much; in Japan only elementary school has a 4th year, but since Keron is a different planet altogether they could have a fourth year of middle school or high school, or it could be a system where the first year of training starts much later than you’d except (maybe around 11 or 12). Another is at the end Tamama says “Our Generation’s Turn”, not “Your Generation”, but the Funimation release’s subtitles fixed that anyway (my guess it is was a typo, it does make more sense with “Our” though since the age gap between the two doesn’t seem to be that big)

Moving along to part b, regardless of your stance on these sort of things and whether we should show developing characters being insecure about their appearances and working through it or whether we should have them always be satisfied with it no matter what (I lean more towards the former, it covers the people who arrive at insecurities on their own), can we just take a moment to look at Momoka’s Mother? She more or less looks the way Momoka wants to and considering the other ways she takes after her Mother, just waiting a few years to see what happens seems a viable option (Though I have to admit I never understood when other girls compared their appearances to adult women; it’s like comparing a kitten and a cat, you’re a similar thing but you’re not there yet). I have to admit I never really went through this though, my parents didn’t really draw much attention to these things and there’s quite a lot I didn’t notice about my appearance until I turned 20 (Plus I had a back brace I wore most of the day from ages 9-15 because my back muscles weren’t strong enough and after it came off most of the major changes had already happened, like a butterfly)

Episode 31: Aww! This one was quite cute, really there’s no other way I can describe it, this episode has a lot of really adorable moments between Keroro’s excitement over his space craft, the effort he goes through to make it back with his souveneer, and the moments with the narrator. And of course the two sweetest moments of the episode: the interaction with the Mojajin had the same sort of charm as seeing somebody pay a backhanded, yet sincere compliment and seeing Natsumi go searching for Keroro was adorable as well. I’m going to admit, when I first watched the series Natsumi’s way of handling the aliens rubbed me the wrong way and it still does, especially when she does the authoritarian “I’m forbidding it and expect you to just accept it” bit (honestly, I can’t condone that behaviour in anyone), so the opening was a bit dicey for me but the ending makes up for it. Really Keroro and Natsumi have one of the most tumultuous relationships in the show, so the rare moments when we get to see that they do care about each other are always nice to see.

And as a side note, the moment with the frog was absolutely hilarious; I always love it when you see characters based on an animal species interacting with that animal (Honestly, I’m shocked that after four movies Equestria Girls still hasn’t done a “Pony meets Horse” joke)

Episode 32: I’m going to take a moment to ask the one question that’s been burning in the back of my mind since I first saw this episode and I’m sure I’m not the only one who’s wondered this: What would happen if they used this thing on a frog? Would it turn into a Human or a Keronian? There’s the potential for quite a few humour moments with this one and I would have loved to see that explored a bit. Also does anyone else find it funny that when Keroro explains why a Panda would make a good ally he basically describes a role that’s already filled by Tamama? Having a cute appearance, but becoming violent when you get too close. Actually Pandas aren’t especially aggressive towards humans, they have attacked them, but usually out of irritation (Dolphins would fit the cute yet deadly bit better than a Panda, some species such as the Atlantic Bottlenose Dolphin hunt for sport).

Having said that I’m guessing the Zoo they visit is based on the Ueno Zoo since that Zoo is located in Tokyo and did have a Panda at the time; though that Panda was male, also the Elephants they had during the war died of starvation, there’s a memorial, and a historically inaccurate picture book about it and everything

Episode 33: Now this one is interesting, my goal is to be a director/producer of animation (I’ve actually been working on a story board for a fan project) so I always enjoy a peek into the production process, especially for shows. It’s doubly interesting since the process they show is very different from in North America where the voice acting is typically done first, while the method shown here has it as the last step (it must make dubbing foreign shows easier though, if you usually do something similar anyway)

Though there are a couple of options for a difficult to draw pose that weren’t in here that I remember from the classes I took, one is taking a picture so you don’t have to have a model standing for as long. The other is a bit controversial considering the sensibilities I’ve seen from some fan artists, but it’s something called a swipe file. Basically it’s a collection of pictures that that catch your interest that you can use for inspiration, reference and things you can’t get to look right. I know some people don’t approve, but some professionals do actually trace poses and details they have trouble with, especially if it’s something like key animation where you have to make a large number of drawings in a short period of time with nothing to work off of (in-between animation is easier since you’re working off the key drawings and most of the image is the same once you figure out how the character will go from pose a to pose b, and the inking stage of cel animation even more so, enough that Walt Disney replaced the entire inking depart with photocopy machines after Sleeping Beauty released in theaters because the film did poorly and the studio was in financial trouble as a result). If nothing else it’s a good way to practice since you can build muscle memory.

I just wanted to mention this since I remember a while back in another fandom that a lot of people were scandalised when it came out that one artist known for drawing comics had been using screenshots to get the basic pose he built the character on top of and I thought people’s reactions were a bit unfair given how quickly he had been putting his comics together. Especially since nobody was bothered by vector tracing and it’s apparently something that the animation industry has done for years (Some actually do more than that, I remember reading a book from overseas that mentioned a possible shortcut for monochrome pieces of keeping a stack of travel and real estate brochures and catelogues to cut out background from. That I don’t know if you’d be able to do here though) 

Episode 34: Oh I remember this one, to be honest I prefer the ending in the anime version, not just because everyone gets to go, but also because it acknowledges the fact that Keroro never needed a ticket to begin with (on a side note, I feel the Tamama shaped canon on Momoka’s powered suit is a fun little touch). 

As for part 2, actually I don’t think I’ve watched either part of this episode very many times, but watching it again I’m surprised that one Duet with Keroro & Fuyuki doesn’t play, the one about finding a pebble while walking....Having said that I remember back when I first watched the series, the song boulevard of broken dreams played on the radio a lot and I think this episode was the reason for a parody that always popped into my head of Keroro singing it as “Boulevard of broken plates” (By the way, the best way to fix ceramics is to moisten it and use crazy glue; it needs moisture to stick so running it under the faucet should work)

Episode 35: It’s the birthday episode! I remember this inspiring an entire discussion trying to work out the approximate Birthdays of each character based on astrology (Fuyuki & Momoka have actual hints since we see their birthdays celebrated; Fuyuki’s is likely mid-October and Momoka’s in late March) we actually worked out a few, though I remember we had trouble with Dororo, Mois, Koyuki & Saburo & I’m not sure what we ultimately settled on.

Having said that Keroro’s does fit really well, there’s one person my family knows (the mother of my closest friend growing up) who has her birthday the day before Keroro’s and there are certain....similarities in their behaviour (To give you an idea, my mom first met her when I was in kindergarten and she asked my mom to be the emergency contact for her son who was in my class and my mom agreed to avoid her asking someone dangerous)

Also the gifts Giroro gives Natsumi are space versions of the items the title character of Kaguya Hime asks five suitors (one per suitor) to bring her to win her hand in marriage, in the end all of them fail since the tasks were supposed to be near impossible (it was more to stop them bothering her parents). Either way Giroro’s comment that he casually picked them up for her would probably have been a bit more believable if he had taken that claw/fang out of his head first....just a thought.
