Well! I just learned that among the never-made Don Bluth animated movies project... there was a plan to create a Belgariad animated movie! This never came through (due to the Eddings' absolute refusal to see their books being adapted in any shape or form), but damn! Can you imagine a world where we woul have had a Don Bluth Belgariad movie?

You know, even apart from the intricate worldbuilding about the talking rodents and what their deal is, the part of The Secret of NIMH that's like "working single mom trying to obtain medical treatment for her sick child discovers that her late husband was basically a high-level Dungeons & Dragons character and never told her about any of it, and she keeps tripping over elements of his unreasonably complicated backstory whose context and significance are never fully explained to the audience because the particulars aren't relevant to her journey" is a really fun premise all on its own.

I only had 12 spots,
so these are the 12 I picked. If you aren't happy, you're always welcome to make your own poll 🤷

IM DONE OH MY GOD THIS TOOK WAY LONGER THEN IT SHOULD ITS 2:54 AM. I had the idea of a fake screenshot for ages now and finally had the poses I wanted weeks ago. Dialogue is made up I didn’t have any particular scene in the book in mind when making this.

Hartman is an evangelical weirdo who spent most of his career being carried by people who were much more talented than him.
Viv is an abusive workaholic who cannot take criticism.
Claiming that these two awful individuals are in the same league as Don Bluth is an insult to the man’s legacy.

The Hundred Acre Kingdom 1990.
Read the book that inspired the animated classic.

In 2019 I drew skeksis from 'dark crystal' in the Don Bluth's artstyle. I haven't touched them since then, but I've been thinking a lot about it. Now that I feel comfortable with animation, I thought I could try myself on them. I got pretty lazy on this one, but I wanted to try it.

you know something that is really adorable at the end of anastasia 1997 is when dimitri and her were on the boat clearly finishing off their adorable “goofy” waltz dance they did prior in the middle of the movie. throughout that time, they both slowly fall out of the dance, and dimitri’s arm goes to grabs her waist, while they both just walk circles around each other, smiling so adorably into each others eyes. at that point, anya kisses him and it’s beautiful. however, it’s the part where dimitri picks her up bridal style, spinning her around, she lets out a laugh is where i’m weak. the romance in this movie is top tier. an iconic 90s animated romcom.

Not to be all "old man shouts at clouds" here but kids today have no idea what was lost when 2D hand-drawn animation died.
Every character now has a round face, big round eyes, and either a small button nose if female or a larger triangle nose if male. Their eyebrows move but they don't really make expressions the way that actual people do.
Titan AE was released in 2000 and mixed hand-drawn backgrounds and characters with 3D large environments and spaceships. It was so poorly received it ended the career of legendary animation director Don Bluth and bankrupted Fox Animation Studios. It's not remembered as a good movie.
But look at Cale, the protagonist. Look at the way he's drawn, his facial expressions. It's clear when he's angry or hopeful or exhausted or worried. You can tell when he's talking through a grin or spitting his words through gritted teeth. He looks, behaves, and is drawn like a real person.
His art is beautiful. And that style doesn't exist anymore.
