Sanctum fill for @fyeah7kpp Promptober
Jei was, she had to admit, a little proud of herself when she made it all the way to the library without dropping a single pastry from either of the plates she carried. She was even more smug when her guess proved correct.
A wall of stacked books greeted her in the alcove that was her goal. Jei bit back a smirk, balancing the plates, and cleared her throat. "Permission to enter the sanctuary, my lord duke?"
A moment passed before Lyon's head appeared around the end of the stack, his long dark hair trailing on the table. He arched a brow. "Jeiana. What are you doing?"
"Making sure you're properly provisioned should siege be laid to your... fortifications." She nodded at the books.
The arched brow went higher, but she was pretty sure she saw the faintest hint of a smile as well. "All of that is for me?"
Jei wrinkled her nose, cheeks warming as she acknowledged, "I was hoping I could join you? Did you want company?"
Lyon studied her a moment and pushed his spectacles higher on the bridge of his nose. "Yours.... would be alright," he finally said, even as he withdrew into his book fortress once more.
Jei grinned as she circled the table to join him. She set the plates down on the one bit of open table space--snitching a starfruit tart as she did--and moved a small stack of books off a chair so she could sit.
"Do you want quiet or an academic discussion?" she asked, peering at his book.
Lyon considered a moment while he selected a pastry of his own. "If you've read this one, we can discuss it." The corners of his mouth twitched. "I know you are much more fond of conversation."
She was smart enough not to tease at the tacit admission he was making the sacrifice for her. "Doesn't that make us a good team? You have the brains, I have the charm?"
He glanced at her, silently chewing. "Your own brains are far from lacking, Jeiana."
"Oh. Thank you." Her neck warmed at the praise. "As it happens, I am familiar with that text..."
They spent the next hour tucked away from the rest of the isle, safely ensconced in discussion and debate.
And pastries.

Smiley Duke
The Duke & Duchess of York. This may be an engagement photo, not sure, but it's one of my favorites. I love how Bertie is trying to repress his joyful giggles. And I also love Elizabeth's style.

Happy centenary wedding anniversary to Bertie and Elizabeth! 100 years ago today (m. 26/04/1923).
Tumblr media
'…I do love you Bertie, & I feel certain that I shall more & more.'
Tumblr media
'You know how I love her & will always take care of her [...] to me, she is everything.'
Excerpts from The Queen Mother: The Official Biography by William Shawcross.
Photos, top: Prince Albert, Duke of York (later George VI) and Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon on their wedding day, April 26th, 1923. Prince Albert is wearing the full dress uniform of the Royal Air Force with the rank of group captain. Elizabeth's dress, typically 1920s Medieval Revival in style, was crafted with ivory-coloured chiffon moire, pearls, and silver thread. The intention was for the dress to coordinate with a gift of Flanders lace from Queen Mary. Elizabeth also opted to break with the tradition of wearing a tiara, and instead chose a headdress of leaves. Credit: Bassano Ltd.
Centre and bottom: Prince Albert and Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon during their honeymoon, April 26th to May 7th 1923. After the wedding breakfast at Buckingham Palace, the newlyweds rode in an open landau (a four-wheeled carriage) to Waterloo Station. From there they travelled by train to Polesden Lacey in Surrey, which had been lent to them by the Honourable Mrs Greville. Sources: Royal Collections Trust, The National Trust.

Royal Family Tidbit of the Day
Tumblr media
"The Bowes-Lyons were by no means overawed when Prince Albert, Duke of York, the second son of King George V and Queen Mary, started driving over from Balmoral to pay court to their youngest daughter (and ninth child) Elizabeth in the autumn of 1920. It opened the prospect of an honourable connection for the family, of course, but the Bowes-Lyons were not short on connections, and a life of royal duty seemed a cruel sentence for a carefree child like Elizabeth. She was barely twenty. Lady Strathmore made quite sure that her daughter was not seduced by the tinsel that might have attracted another mother to a royal connection, and she was not surprised when, in the spring of 1921, Lady Elizabeth turned down Prince Albert's first proposal of marriage.'
Tumblr media Tumblr media
'King George V had not thought much of his son's chances with Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon. 'You'll be a lucky fellow,' he said, 'if she accepts you.' But in January 1923, a brief telegram to Sandringham told the King and Queen that their quiet son had been rewarded for his tenacity. 'All right, Bertie.' The young man's joy transformed him. 'Bertie is supremely happy,' Queen Mary wrote on the night of 20 January 1923 after Lady Elizabeth had been with her parents to stay at Sandringham.'
Tumblr media Tumblr media
'And not even the King's passion for time-keeping was proof against his future daughter-in-law. She was always an unpunctual person, but when she arrived late at the royal dinner table, she was invariably forgiven. 'You are not late, my dear,' King George V would say, 'we must have sat down two minutes too early.'

I haven't seen much cat content in the last few days. That is why my timeline is sparse.
Let me tell you about my books instead!
I have a reverse harem of the abandoned daughter of the duke has daddy issues but is giving up on trying to get his attention. Her brother is gay. She's got 4 very handsome suitors.
You should read it! I'm posting it on Tapas for free, but if you want to read ahead, the ebook is available. If you want it in print, I've got that too!

Saxophone History Podcast Episodes 7-9 Paul Desmond
I’ve just released the third and final episode on Paul Desmond for the Saxophone history podcast and I think the three episodes are quite an interesting story. Just like with the other saxophonists I’ve looked at, Desmond had a much more colourful life than the few bits and anecdotes that we all know of. I hope you’ll give these episodes a listen and then I hope you’ll listen to some of his…

The Duchess of York with Princess Elizabeth and a canine friend at Glamis Castle.
I've read that the Duke took this photo and it was in 1930 when Elizabeth was pregnant with Princess Margaret. Hence the strategic placement of the dog and the wall!
Good job, Bertie. It's a sweet photo!
