I know my fellow artists and creators have been frustrated with the rise of AI on Pinterest and Google. Many of us find it difficult to serch for good references, tips, and general inspiration for art. So I want to share my collection of good, free websites for artists, designers, film makers, and creators so we can create without ugly AI images staring in our faces 🙌
Sketchfab
An incredible source for references. Has a huge collection of 3D animals, architecture, interior rooms, vehicles, food, objects, furniture, nature, memes, characters, etc etc etc. You can literally find several insanely detailed 3D models of the Notre Dame (this one is insane) Models can rotated at any angle as well as zoomed in and out. You can also change the view of the model to be matcap with flat, colorless planes, wireframe, or base color as opposed to fully rendered.
Cons: there are many uploads that are random and incredibly specific, which overwhelms the search. Can be excellent for game designers who want to download models but for artists looking for drawing references, you might have to dig a bit for what you want. Can be so fun for playing around and using crazy fun references for practicing.
Designspiration
As a photographer and graphic designer and someone who can doomscroll on pinterest forever, this is my favorite for finding inspiration for everything: typography, logos, product mockups, illustration, photography, web design, etc. Has an amazing feature where you can search for art with specific hex codes! Probably the coolest feature I’ve seen in search engines, and by far superior to google's color search. This site is mostly for design inspiration, but I feel like if you are super into moodboards, then this is the site for you too especially with the beautiful selection of photography.
Cons: I have no cons, I love this website so much and I used to be addicted to pinterest (still am actually😬) but this is easily my new favorite
Public Works by Cosmos
Thousands of artworks enter the public domain every year, and this website is a search engine for other 100,000 of those copyright free works. All of these works are free to edit, use, and sell with few restrictions.
Cons: I personally find the layout for the search feed a bit frustrating to look around in sometimes, because it’s not the typical "scroll up and down" website. But is very dynamic and overall fun to explore.
Same.energy
This is a good visual search engine that’s a good replacement for Google images and Pinterest. The minimal words makes it simple and easy, and clicking on an image you like to filter the feed to find similar images.
Cons: this is in beta so it still have some kinks to work out. It seems to struggle with specific searches and some of the images brought up in the search can be repetitive or not relevant.
Reference Angle
A website for finding face references in any specific angle and any expression for any gender and age.
Cons: I would love this website more if it gave you the ability to customize the light source, but sadly is not an option. I also feel like there is not a lot of racial diversity in the photos, and some of the images do not match the specific angle. But it is overall a great source for face references
Virtual Lighting Studio by zvork
A good source for light studies. You can change the source, direction, color, and brightness as well stacking several light sources on top of each other.
Cons: there isn’t a way to angle the face or change the expression, so it is permanently in portrait mode. There are four different models and I’m not the biggest fan of some of them…I like the black guy the best because he looks at me kindly instead staring into my soul like the two white guys. The ads are also a bit obnoxious and for the love of god DO NOT USE IN MOBILE!!! The ads are impossible to get rid of.
Film Grab
An archive of stills from a huge list of movies. Good for film makers, photographers, art studies, moodboards, inspiration, etc. Has a huge selection of movies and you can search by movie, director, costume designer, aspect ratio, year, genre, and country. You can also hit random post and it'll give you a random movie, which I think is really fun.
Cons: I do not recommend mobile. The mobile does not have the option to search for a specific movie, so you're forced to scroll through the giant A-Z list of directors or films to find the specific film you were looking for. Another con that I just discovered: a big-ass ad on the top of the website that occasionally advertises AI websites 🤢 (not shown on the screenshots I shared because ew)

Another image search website that has the feeling of Pinterest
Cons: some images are locked for premium only, and the feed is a bit frustrating to scroll through on mobile since they show the images one at a time instead of as a nice collage like pinterest. Some images can also be irrelevant to the search.
Sending lots of love to my fellow artists and creative peeps out there. AI sucks and it feels like it's overwhelming the creative space. But I promise there is a way to avoid it! Keep creating 💕

“Where are we going?” asked Khalida, attempting to adjust her denim jacket to hide the worst of the scorch marks.
Cassandra took a moment to answer. She tucked her domino mask into the pocket of her combats, then cast her eyes around and upwards. Satisfied they were not being observed, the ducked out of the alley and merged with the flow of pedestrians.
“To see someone I used to know.” the hero replied, quietly. “An old friend?” Khalida’s voice rang out with enthusiasm. She lowered her voice in response to Cassandra’s pointed look. “Dang, I love the whole ‘visiting an old friend for help’ thing. Always a juicy dynamic.”
“Not exactly a friend.” she looked up and down the street, eyes flicking up and down. “Not anymore.”
“An old enemy? That’s even juicier? Are they, y’know, your very *best* enemy?”
Cassandra sighed.
“They’re an old … something.”
“Ah, a classic ‘it’s complicated’ type situation. Very nice. Love a tangled backstory.”
“It’s not a backstory, kid. It’s my life.”
“I mean, yeah. Sure. But also: you’re a hero! So, to *you* it’s your life. But to us fans, it’s kinda also backstory.”
Cassandra could practically hear the girl adding tags to her mental blog post. There were exclamation points.
“You realise you have powers now, right? You gonna start thinking of your own life as backstory?”
“Are you kidding me, I’ve already started my entry on HeroWiki!” she produced her burner phone and triumphantly showed a draft on the screen. “Wait, is the person we’re seeing on Hiki?”
“I hate that portmanteau. Sounds too much like ‘hickey’” Cassandra finally spotted what she was looking for and started steering the two of them towards a particular sewer grate. “But … yes. She’ll be on there. Search for Troubleshooter.”
“Oh dip.” Khalida looked up with open mouth. “She’s on the anti-hero section.”
“She wasn’t always.” Cassandra reached into her seemingly endless pockets and handed Khalida a high vis vest. “Now put this on, so no-one will ask questions about us dropping into the sewers…”

Troubleshooter’s sewer lair was surprisingly dry and homey. It smelled of lemon and baking soda, making Khalida think someone had been making cakes (though there was no sign of sweet treats among the utilitarian fittings).
“You bringing trouble to my door again, Cass?” Troubleshooter was squaring up to Cassandra; both were bristling with tension.
“Well, trouble is your business, Shoots.”
“It used to be.” Troubleshooter’s hand was on the sidearm holstered beneath her armpit. “But folks got … snippy about the solutions I offered.”
“Thought you’d be thrilled for me to admit I couldn’t handle this on my own.” Careless of the implied threat, Cassandra leaned in to speak softly in Troubleshooter’s ear. “I need you.”
Troubleshooter looked up at Cassandra and bit her lip. Slowly, fingers unwrapped themselves from the weapon.
“Why didn’t they like your solutions?” Two sets of eyes snapped over to look at Khalida; they’d nearly forgotten she was there. “You’re a prognosticator, right? Like Cassandra. You should be, like, the *most* helpful kinda hero.”
“I’m not a prophet. Not like this one.” Troubleshooter tutted. “It’s more … extremely limited universal knowledge osmosis.”
“Huh?”
“I see a problem. I know the most efficient way to solve it. Step-by-step. Like God’s instruction manual.”
“That’s amazing!”
“Not when the problem people bring you is a *person*. They get pretty antsy when you tell them the best solution is a bullet.”
“Oh.” Khalida gulped and looked nervously between the two of them. “Um, Cassandra, did you bring me here to…”
“No, kid.” Cassandra ran a hand through her hair. Suddenly she looked tired. “Here’s the situation, Shoots: I had a prophecy. End of days type stuff. Told me to be in a place to find a person. The place was full of bad-tempered hired muscle. The person was Khalida here. The visions since then are confused, but they all call her the same thing: ‘Reality Ender’. So here’s the problem I put before you: how do we help her *not* destroy reality?”
“You know you might not like the answer.”
“But we’ve still gotta ask.”
“Fine.”
Troubleshooter’s eyes went blurry. It was as if they were vibrating, flickering suddenly through a thousand upon a thousand realities, like searching for a station on an old radio. Just as suddenly as it started, her gaze blinked back into the present.
“Huh.”
“That doesn’t sound like a good result.”
“No. But it’s not a bad one, either.”
“Explain.”

Thought about the dynamics some more.
Before her challenge with the Tyrant, whenever Ire needed something, she went to Guide. Not just because he has a better grasp on the world and it's people, but because she's learned while living with him that he has the personal experience to backup and support everything he says.
Still, Guide doesn't say what he was or who he was before he was simply Guide. Ire thinks he was either an adventurer or explorer. Or maybe some kind of highly specialized hired sword/gun, if she stretches her imagination a bit further.
When he bakes (which isn't as often as he would like) he tends to do one or two or three things at once. He needs to multitask to feel fulfilled, and that often ends with the house having an assortment of breads and pies and cakes. Sometimes he'll go through the process of candying fruits, or making jams or jellies, but that tends to be a the request of someone else more often than it is because he wants to.
Nurse, on the other hand, is, well, a medical professional. She's seen a thousand horrific things and she's researched and studied a thousand worse still; a proud member of the Medical guild who wanted a secure place to live without the risk of the Tyrant or any rivaling medical services.
She smokes. A bad habit, but one of the only ones that keeps her afloat some days. She enjoys the tedious process of meal planning and prep, but whether out of habit or just by some miscalculation, she tends to make a bit too much, so it's just become common practice for her and Guide to debate what they want to eat for the week and then send Ire out to go collect some things.
There's not very many things she doesn't know how to treat. She also, annoyingly, gets sick the least often. I think to even qualify for some medical programs, you NEED to have an exceptionally high mana tolerance, otherwise whatever backlash from the surgeries or medicine administration can and will kill the provider.
Jharim is.... Well he is. Jack of all trades, master of nothing but the skill of vicious mockery and being unable to die. He stayed in Ire's shadow initially because he was morbidly curious about what she was, but ended up getting adopted like a stray alley cat.
Ire doesn't really know how to live on her own. Not fully, anyways; she needs some kind of background presence or noise for her to really feel safe in any regard. I don't think this is exactly a dragon thing per say, but I can see it being really common in dragon hybrids. Especially hybrids whose other lineage half is social.
She comes, she goes. There will be times she stays for longer than she wants to out of request or her own worries (a blood moon or an eclipse will keep her there for upwards of two weeks, just to be sure nothing is hiding nearby and that the base is still sound).
Sometimes when she's on recovery arrest-- not always, but sometimes-- she'll sit on the roof and just. Stare. Guide thinks she's waiting for something, with the way she looks out at the horizon. She thinks he's right, but she doesn't know what she's waiting for.
Her energy always returns before she can think about it for too long. Maybe that's for the best.

I like reading through their in-game quotes sometimes, because Nurse's one actually supports that she really did seen a lot ("Yes I've seen bigger wounds"). Anyway, damn, these are really detailed dynamics, but took (part of) them off my tongue quite well lmaoo. This little group now feels somehow even more alive than it probably was, which I really like.
Adding onto draconic thing (I am as knowledgeable in dragons as Yharim lmaoo) I always thought that Follies were (before dragons were hunted down) or are social, so maybe social aspect isn't as out-of-place in Ire's nature as it could be? She isn't exactly like Auric dragons anyway, excluding parts of her personality.
Jharim apparently appeared as being in search of someone who can "Help [him] slay the beast" (which is either Fogbound (no I am not elaborating on that) or who fucking knows), so he just stuck around maybe for this exact reason and then, yup, got adopted. Ire didn't find him, HE found them.

Language learning with media tips and recs for Mandarin
Once you've started to approach conversational level (or before then if you can't wait) a great way to build familiarity is watching shows in the language you are learning. But if you are still fairly new to the language there can still be a big gaps here, so I am sharing what's worked for me.
General tips
If you haven't already, I highly recommend adding two plugins to your browser: a speed controller and a dual subtitle plugin.
A speed controller is great for slowing it down when they are speaking too fast to process.
And while it's not great (for language learning purposes) to rely on native language subtitles, it's one way to enjoy watching a target language show and not have to engage so much of your brain (work and life can be draining) while still getting some benefit via exposure to culture, the sounds and (with a dual sub plugin) the words.
I use Chrome (yuck, I know) and the plugins DualSub and Video Speed Controller . There may be better ones out there, but I enjoy these. Dual Sub also has a " Chinese learning" option, which adds the pinyin as well, but I find it's not super reliable, not sure what I am doing wrong.
Also, side note: use Netflix in the browser for dual sub, if they have the subtitles you want.
Mandarin targeted tips
Watching shows produced in your target language is great practice but it can be hard to find sometimes, or expensive. The two best free options are YouTube and Viki, which come with their own pros and cons.

The Untamed
Probably needs no introduction, but as my first cdrama it will always hold a special space in my heart.
Sales pitch: a very fun cast of characters with acting I really enjoyed (but sometimes on the cheesy side) and motivations I could understand, even if I disagreed with them. I don't think I truly hate any character in this show, even the annoying ones I enjoy mocking at least.
Vibes: epic historical fantasy drama with humor and angst and tragedy
Disclaimers: not everyone enjoys the acting as much as I did, many people dislike the deviations from the source material (including the censorship), regular drama pitfalls (pacing, cheesiness, etc)
Where to watch: Available on US Netflix or on Viki (although low quality unless you have a paid subscription)
My Uncanny Destiny
My favorite drama to date.
Sales pitch: an extremely funny satirical take on cdrama tropes, I laughed through pretty much all of it. Has very progressive themes for the setting and handles them well (but humorously). The main couple's dynamic was fantastic.
Vibes: comedic historical drama with depth
Disclaimers: I personally think it is a lot funnier if you are at least passingly familiar with cdrama tropes as the premise of the show relies on flipping these (esp gendered ones), a fair amount of potty/gross out humor (but not all of it), the writing does drop off a little towards the end

God Troubles Me
For the animation fans
Sales pitch: an animated show that is also really great for learning more about modern Chinese culture, I love the light hearted humor and ridiculous characters in this. While there is a loose overarching plot dealing with gods and monsters, it's actually very much a slice of life show
Vibes: cozy fun comedy
Disclaimers: while it's a great way to learn about Chinese culture, that can also be one of the biggest hurdles to engaging with it, especially if you are not very knowledgeable yet (like me!). Because it assumes the audience is already familiar, some jokes/details/plots may be confusing.
