Haunt Separation

Fandom: Danny Phantom Prompt: Haunt Character: Tucker, Danny, Sam, & Frostbite Words: 881 Summary: With Danny's acceptance to college, he is discovering a new challenge. Haunt separation. Luckily he has his local ghost doctor to go to to help solve this problem; Frostbite.

The first time Danny left Amity after the portal accident was an experience. His core hurt for a reason that he couldn’t explain. The longer he was gone the more he longed for his home. If it was longer than a week, then Danny would be in physical pain at the separation between him and Amity.

It was never really anything that he had to worry about.

That was until he got accepted in college. A college that was all the way in California. He was ecstatic! This was the college that he worked all year for. The college the Lancer put a lot of work into helping him get into. It completely slipped his mind about his separation problem.

He could shout to the sun how grateful he was for his friends. His best friends who keep track of everything for him. Who keep his life in check. Who have been a bigger help since he was announced Prince of the Ghost Zone and suddenly had more responsibility.

“Remember Danny you have an appointment in the Far Frozen with Frostbite. It’s your bi-monthly check up,” Tucker informed him as they walked towards Casper High.

“It’s after school, right?” Danny lifted an eyebrow. Ever since the whole college and king business both fell into his lap he’s been worried more about his human life. It took a few therapy sessions to realize that his human half was just as important as his ghost half, especially with all of the extra responsibilities.

“You are correct. You are meeting with Lancer during your lunch period to study and makeup on some work. After school you go to Frostbite and then you have Greek lessons with Pandora and finally Esperanto lessons with Wolfe. It’s not packed today, but we did that on purpose. After that you come back and we got started on Homework,” Tucker taped away on his trustful PDA.

“Nothing to do with the council today?” Danny raised an eyebrow.

“Not today. Saturday however you will be in meetings all day.”

“Don’t forget to ask Frostbite about the pain you feel when leaving Amity,” Sam said, now joining the two on their way to school.

“Okay. Got it!” Danny said confidently, not seeing the look his two best friends were sharing.

“Here is a cliff notes version checklist of everything. We can handle any ghost that come along,” Sam promised as she handed him a small piece of paper.

“Thank you, guys. . .really,” Danny hugged the best friends he ever could have had, the trio walking into the school.

It was after school, Danny was now in the Far Frozen, in a warm hut, sitting with Frostbite.

“How have things been Great One?” the yeti asked.

“Chill. Pun intended,” Danny smiled at his old friend.

“Well, you are in normal health, nothing wrong. Any questions?”

“Actually, I do have one,” at the Yeti’s quirked eyebrow, Danny decided to continue. “When I leave Amity for to long I get this pain in my core. It becomes physically more painful the longer I’m gone. It wouldn’t be a problem but I’m moving to California for college soon.”

“Sounds to me like a haunt separation,” Frostbite scratched his cheek.

“a what?”

“Ah. Let me explain. When a ghost primarily lives in the outside world, they have a haunt. Where they reside, if you will. Well, the longer the ghost lives there the stronger their bond to the haunt is. Making it painful for the ghost to leave.”

“Well, is there a way to reverse it!?” Danny was shocked.

“Of course! It’s a little difficult and I’m sad to say it will take time out of your schedule,” Frostbite warned.

“Well, it’s something that has to be done. So, I’ll just have to make time,” Danny shrugged.

“In that case here’s the remedy. Fly out of Amity, till you feel the pain in your core. Sit down and just mess around or meditate for thirty minutes. Every few days it should extend a little bit further, until the bond is canceled out,” Frostbite smiled.

“That’s it?” Danny was confused.

“Yep! Nothing to big. Like I said just do something at the spot you first feel the pain. It should slowly get farther. Anything else?” Frostbite asked.

“Nope that was it. Thanks Frostbite! I’ll see you at the meeting Saturday?”

“Wouldn’t miss it Great One,” the two said their goodbye’s as Danny flew to his next meeting. Once he was done with all of his things that day he called Sam and Tucker, letting them knew what Frostbite had to say.

“Done, added to your schedule. From now on you have a forty-minute haunt time. This should be enough for travel and the thirty minutes for extending haunt times,” Tucker said into the phone.

“Give us a few days and we can probably find a way to merge it with homework or something, that way you still have time for other things,” Sam told him.

“Alright. If we’re lucky we can break this bond soon,” Danny said into the phone, saying night to his friends.

Lo and behold, as time went on the pain became less and less until Danny was able to leave Amity with no feelings. Just in time for him to leave for college.

You gotta hand it to Fig. All of the Bad Kids were given foils this season and they got to decide how much they wanted to engage with that part of the plot. Gorgug only interacted with Mary Ann in passing despite them both being on the Owlbears. Fabian noped out of chatting up Ivy once she crossed a line with Mazey. Riz was so busy that he truly had no time to engage with Kipperlilly even though she's obsessed with him. Kristen interacted a bit with Buddy but spent way more time verbally sparring with Kipperlilly. And Adaine was somewhat interested in Oisin but never overtly acted on it.

But Fig?

She's in Ruben's WALLS. She's in his DREAMS. She's faking her alter emo's death. She's got the Fantasy FBI after her. She's SO SO tiny. No one is doing it like Fig's doing it.

~Well, here we go again, good old Ghost Hunger AU~

Description: The Ghost Zone is inherently a violent place. You can hunt or be hunted, there is no other options. However, for some reason the Halfa does not understand what is happening. And no one rushes to explain it. NB! ghost cannibalism is mentioned.

Suppose there’s a conventional division among ghosts. Some of them are potential predators capable of hunting their own kind, while others are only able to absorb the surrounding energy and therefore build up power more slowly than hunters.

So, predation is used as a method of survival in poor ectoplasm areas of the Ghost Zone, less often as a means of gaining power. Even less often hunters are created.

It is obvious that the appearance of a hunter who is the son of human ghost hunters in a haunting place without stable sources of ectolasm has caused panic in the society of the dead ones. For the newly formed ghost to have ectoblasts, fangs or ghost sense is a rarity and great luck. So the newcomer had everything and more to be a serious threat. An awful danger for the surrounding spirits…Right?

But Danny doesn’t know the specifics of his new biology ectology!

Even though he’s a hunter, he’s never had a ghost hunger. Probably because thanks to his parents he has an amazing ectoplasm concentrator in the basement. Soon everyone understands that the boy does not attack first. Those who return through the portal never report any losses at all. He does not bite or attempt to capture cores of other spirits. At first, the ghosts think it's a trap. Smart enough for a beginner. Not everyone has the tenacity to pretend to be an idiot to get close to them. But the Phantom never feeds on them. He’s…safe?

What’s more, Danny seems to think they’re a threat to the city. Which is fun and weird. Normally, there is no competition for feeding using human emotion. But the owner of the lair did not like the smell of fear in the air. Is this ghost broken?

When the ghosts who visit Amity realize that the halfa does not know that he can hunt them, rather than just guard his territory...Well, it explains a lot. Everyone agrees not to explain the situation to the boy so that the city behind the portal remains a relatively safe haven during the during a "hunting season" and other troubles in the Infinite Realms.

The problem arises when Phantom begins exploring the Ghost Zone. What if the other hunters make the boy stop being a freak?

In addition, more experienced ghosts may well attack the careless halfa. And Amity Park under the control of a more predatory spirit would be a terrible outcome. Most dead ones near the portal are used to the fact that the area before Wisconsin is open to travel and migration without the threat of being eaten.

All rational ghosts try to avoid the territory of hunters. If you can’t defend yourself, there’s too much risk of being a free meal. It’s much safer to settle down with spirits with similar energy levels at door clusters. If the hunter does not purposefully show up at your lair, you will have a much better chance of keeping the afterlife.

Those of the Ancients who have won their position and those of them who were created for it have become accustomed to isolation. Although all the Ancients have lost the need to eat 'cause they have absorbed enough energy, legends about their past are still be nightmares for all spirits. Just because they don’t need to eat other ones doesn’t mean they won’t. It is clear that a weaker hunter can also be hunted. No reason to risk.

Therefore, how freely and fearlessly Phantom communicates with Frostbite, Clockwork or Pandora is puzzling. Does he feel threatened at all? The Ancients find this experience refreshing. Lil communication without fear makes them feel sympathy for this youngling. Danny is always glad of their company. And the boy is not afraid to express his opinion. It is strange but...pleasant?

Their minions from time to time complain that they teach a potential enemy but it is very difficult to see a possible rival in Phantom. Danny is always in trouble. The youngster is silly and careless. Like a wet kitten that can’t even make a threatening hiss. So Ancients, to their own surprise, don't mind helping him. Why isn’t his naivety annoying?

For example, Frostbite’s trying to teach Danny hunting and tracking techniques because he thinks the little cub doesn’t know how to be what he supposed to be. Meanwhile Danny sees his attempts as a course of self-defense that he can use against ghosts who try to infiltrate his city.

Some insufficiently powerful ghosts mimic predators to scare away dangerous spirits and protect themselves. Skulker is quite pleased that he managed to deceive halfa:

Does Great actually smoke?

Alright, so there's this really stupid theory/meta/whatever you want to call it that came to me out of the blue and I'd like to share it. As some people have already mentioned, while we've seen Great smoke during episodes 1-5, we never actually saw him smoke during episode 6, aka the episode that showed us what actually happened in the real timeline of events up until Great got shot. (Whether that changes remains to be seen.) To touch on that, let's start from the beginning: When does Great smoke? Episode 1: On the sidewalk before Korn takes it out of his hand, when he's stressed and confused about seeing 4 minutes into the future. Episode 2: He isn't seen smoking. Episode 3: On his balcony, thinking about all the fuckery that has happened with his power, then he notices the clock changing to 11:02 + the lighter scene at the bar Episode 4: He isn't seen smoking. Episode 5: On his balcony after his fight with Korn, then he notices the clock has changed to 11:03. Did you notice a pattern lmao. Besides the fact that he's seen smoking every other ep, the other pattern is that his smoking is inherently related to the 4 minutes ability. There had been a theory a while back when the poster had been shared, which said that 4 Minutes might be deeply connected to fire, instead of water (although it could very well be connected to that as well), because of the colour of the poster:

It's blue/light blue and we know that "the hottest flames are those that burn with a violet, ultra-violet, indigo and blue color," as well as that "these blue and purple flames indicate the presence of a more intense and efficient combustion process, typically reaching higher temperatures than their yellow or red counterparts." (source) All of the above make me think that Great doesn't actually smoke! It's a narrative choice, a metaphor and a way not-real Great can deal with his anxiety in his dream state, instead of the medication he was using in the real timeline. Thematical relevancy aside, why does Great imagine himself smoking when he's not? Well. Here comes my crazy theory. Besides Great, who else from the main cast do we see smoking? TONKLA!

Tonkla's smoking habit is critical to his character in a way, because Korn hates smoking and he hides that he's doing it from him. (I also really, really want to know why he's smoking slim cigarettes specifically, to the point of wanting to tag Sammon on Twitter and ask her about it, but anyway.) Why am I making the connection? Because of this:

My other theory is that Tonkla killed Title and shot Great back to back, on the same night (because he's wearing the same clothes and because it wouldn't make sense to shoot your second target another day at the risk of being caught for the murder of the first). This lead me to believe Tonkla will be smelling of cigarette smoke by the time he reaches Great, which then led me to believe Great's subconscious might have grabbed on that and tried to make sense of it. Hence, "turning" Great into a smoker. Does this make any sense whatsoever? Probably not. Do I care? No, because I crave for Tonkla to have an effect on Great greater (heh) than the bullet inside his stomach :)
