Love that Ehlek's entire motivation for violently hating the Matoran of Mahri Nui and killing them at any and every opportunity is that he saw how depressed his fellow Barraki were about being mutated into monsters and forced to live underwater, and since he was used to being a sea creature already, he decided to spend his time building a really nice fortress for all of them to live in so they could feel like kings again, and then just before they could all move in, an entire village of Mata Nui's favourite little fuckers just falls out of nowhere and lands on it.
Like damn buddy, I'd be pissed too.

I’ve shared these on Discord but decided I wanna share them here too. I know that most of my blog is SU/Paleontology related but I’m also a huge fan of Bionicle. And the Barraki are one of if not my favorite wave of sets from the entire theme. So a while back I wanted to rework them to highlight how bizarre and wonderful they were. Also some size comparisons between them and my Nocturn set!
Pridak is my fav of this bunch but I’m honestly proud of all of them. Tell me which is your fav!

Ehlek is that meme about drinking glowstick fluid and beginning to glow because of it. And like a glowstick, he even breaks!!!

Can i hear more of your thoughts on ehlek if you want bc im very intrigued by your bingo answers and the hc you mentioned
Absolutely! Full disclousure though: Im villain woobifier and while I dont woobify all my villain blorbos, Ehlek is one of the ones that I do.
Ehlek is my third favorite Barraki (my 1 and 2 being Pridak and Takadox respectively if you're curious) and one of my favorite characters in the series as whole. I honestly consider him to be one of the most underrated characters in the series, and easily the most underrated character that isn't a serial-exclusive lore character (see Miserix or Artakha for instance). Just, I adore him so much.
One of the main reasons I like Ehlek is because of he is rather unique by Bionicle villain standards. Ehlek is one of the rare villains in the series that isn't a variation of the "powerhungry conqueror with a personality gimmick to stand them out" archetype because...he isn't really powerhungry or greedy at all. Instead, Ehlek is pretty much exclusively characterized by his anger and paranoia towards others. Ehlek is motivated not by a thirst of power, but rather by his emotions: from what I recall most of his actions in canon stem from wanting to hurt whatever upset him that day. And like I said, this incredibly unique by Bionicle villain standards, the only other villain who is motivated exclusively by emotion is Miserix, and guy isn't even really a villain (TSO and Pridak ocasionally are driven by their emotions, but they still mainly fall to the "powerhungry bastard" trope Greg loved to use). And not just is Ehlek stand out, he stands out in a way I like. I love villains driven by their emotion, so Ehlek being a paranoid distrusting mess is just the absolute best for me.
Because Ehlek is an emotionally driven character and doesn't fall for the "greedy bastard Greg villain mold" unlike his fellow Barraki (Takadox and debatably Carapar not withstanding), I actually really like thinking of Ehlek as the "token sympathetic villain" of the Barraki. I ADORE the "token sympathetic/nice guy in a villain faction" trope, and wish it was something Bionicle had done more often. Now, due to Barraki being tyrannic conquerors, seeing any of them as a "good guy" is kinda iffy. However, I do think having one of them be less bastardly and more sympathetic/tragic could work very well. And I think Ehlek is the best fit given his personality as said. As such a lot of my Ehlek related headcanons are giving him more sympathetic traits. Including giving him a tragic backstory because of course I would.
So my backstory headcanon for Ehleks backstory is rather long and detailed, so I wont go everything here. But I can give you a summary. Basically my headcanon for Ehlek is that he was a prince/ruler of one of the many underwater kingdoms in a continent somewhat wayside of the Matoran Universe. He was well meaning and rather naive, and thus was used as a political pawn by other political figures. He was repeatedly manipulated and taken adcantage of both by other rulers and his own allies. Eventually, after being told he had been used by his own advisor the whole time, Ehlek snapped, and killed anyone he saw as a threat, including the aforementioned advisor. Guy basically become a tyrant after having his trust being broken and kindness abused one too many times.
And thats why I put all those "aaa poor baby uwu" answers. Ehlek for me is a tragic figure who was evil not by nature, but because being repeatedly betrayed and used broke his mind to a distrustful mess. He never wanted to hurt anyone, he just wanted to love and help others. Unlike the other five Barraki he wasnt always an opportunistic warmongerer, he was orginally a kindhearted sensitive soul that wasnt able to take it anymore, so he broke. Just god little little baby you didnt deserve it and shouldve been able to live a happy nad fulfilling life.

Subject No. 071BE: The Winged Stinger

Subject Details:
Name: Ehlek Species: Unknown Previous Affiliation: Barraki Designation: Quick Fire Melee Attacker Abilities: Elemental Control (Lightning, Wind)
071BE—given name “Ehlek”—first incarcerated following defeat at the hands of the Toa Mahri. Was held in solitary confinement until arrival on Sphereus Magna—was released to aid in conflict against the forces of Makuta under the false promise of freedom.
Following Makuta Teridax’s defeat, 071BE was incapacitated and conscripted for Project SFX, undergoing continually more harsh exposure to mutagen. 071BE’s physiology seems to allow him better resilience to the substance—despite numerous trials, he retained most of his base appearance, only growing an additional set of pygmy limbs and wing-like fins on back. Mutations also seem to have given 071BE some control over wind.
071BE is quiet and aloof—application of inhibitor chip not required but suggested as safety measure.

Maybe we've been too harsh on Greg for the ridiculous number of different species in the Matoran Universe.
Like okay, call the tendency to make nearly every new non-Matoran character a member of a brand new species never heard of before (or since in most cases) what you will. Lazy worldbuilding, unnecessarily convoluted, whatever. Be those as they may, is it possible that we have been taking the term "species" too literally?
Yes, some species are certainly fairly populous. Skakdi, Vortixx, Steltians, etc. Given the Barraki's status as rulers of much of the MU, and specifically the way Ehlek's people are described, I'd say it's fairly safe to say there's a goodly amount of each of them as well.
But for other beings, like Axonn, or Hydraxon, or Shadow Stealer, anyone that seems like they could just as easily be unique, and that them being part of a whole species is pushing the boundaries of exactly what logically fits into the system of the MU, it may be wrong to interpret "species" as meaning a widespread population. In their case, where we don't know anything about what their society may be like, where it may be located, or if they even have one, it might be that "species" means nothing more than "there is/was more than one of them." And that could mean anything. It could mean there's an island full of Axonns somewhere. Or it could mean that there were like, 6.
And you can say that's not what species means, but none of these characters evolved naturally. They were all purpose-built. Technically speaking, they're not species, they're product lines. Design models. And how many times have you heard of a car model, or a specific brand of tool, or some toy or piece of media, that got a very limited release? Only a small number of copies were ever made? And that's for disseminating across whole countries, even the entire world. Shrink that down to the size of the MU, a large-ish archipelago. There wouldn't need to be many of a particular kind of being for them to be observed as belonging to a larger group, even if that "larger group" was actually quite small.
So yeah. Maybe all these disparate species actually make a little more sense to coexist with one another if some, maybe even a majority, actually only have a few members, and are only considered to be part of a "species" to signify they're not one-of-a-kind.

if you were a bionicle what kind would you be? ( im not knowledgeable on bionicles so interpret this in the way wich would be most fun to you)
At first I thought of this in terms of species, but species is kind of a big can of worms in Bonkle. Just look at this:
And this isn't counting weird edge cases like Krahka, which are classified as Rahi (animals) despite also being sapient.
While the Matoran are the most plentiful and consistently-present, Bionicle has a ton of random hyperspecific one-off characters in the later years (from a combination of Titan sets and contest entries and book-only characters) who were members of different species. Lots of commendable fandom efforts have been made to make something coherent of that by grouping broadly similar individuals under the same species banner, but in canon there are just so many, with the implication there are a ton of other species as well that didn't get direct representation but still exist out there. In short, the easiest answer that would still fit into the universe, would be to just make a self-MOC that's a feathered snek, and say she's one of those implied but unseen species.
I did entertain trying to restrict myself to species with actual representation (and a confirmed appearance, so I can't cheat via Lariska (book-only) or Ehlek (mutated so a bad example) lol) but honestly none of them feel right to me, so yeah, fuckit. New species.
Element-wise, though, easily going with Plantlife/The Green/Jungle. I like plants, I like teal, that element has both. :)
