A tweet by @Finnattentive: "The clinical research psychologist who created the concept of HSP and first wrote about it, Elaine Aron, based the HSP criteria on family members who have since been diagnosed with autism" How is HSP even a thing after that? Why I’ve rejected the HSP label big time for years now. Sometimes people have tried to apply it to me on my posts about high empathy, sense of justice, or sensory overload and I’ve had to gently correct with, “I mean, I’m autistic. I think it’s okay to just say that.”

How to Deal with Life as HSPs
How to Deal with Life as HSPs
Life is tough right now. My journey has taken me down a very rough road, ridden with potholes. I yearn for some smooth asphalt. You do, too, I’m sure. Most of us, sensitive people, are having a rough time of it. That’s normal. But what about those of us who are a higher level than just sensitive, as in Highly Sensitive People? Even if we don’t consider ourselves in this category, we could all…

Book Review: The Highly Sensitive Person by Elaine N. Aron
Tumblr media
Hello from a friendly (but introverted, detached, and isolation-prone) neighborhood HSP!
I've always had an inkling that most people weren't as hyperreactive to stimuli as I am - that not everyone despised crowds, felt things keenly, empathically; needed to be alone for extended periods to recharge, lived in their imaginations, or had bodies that went berserk every time they were exposed to new allergens, pathogens, or medications - so this book was reaffirming in a lot of ways. It took a trait I already suspected I had and framed in a familiar yet fresh and expansive context. Gave it a name. It offered advice, suggestions, on how to navigate its more taxing effects. I was able see myself more clearly because of that. Wrap my head around the science. Understand my personality, my relationships with others better. Most of all, I was able to feel less like some freak or strange outlier because, hey, there are a lot of us out there who have this innate trait and that's a beautiful, challenging thing!
So although this book could be preachy, not to mention a little too inner child derivative, I appreciated all the insight and psychology behind "high sensitivity." It was illuminating. Validating, too. Besides, it's always nice to grow to have more love, acceptance, and consideration for what makes me--well, ME.
3/5 stars

“Quando você parte para o mundo buscando inconscientemente essa segurança tão desejada sem uma grande experiência com o que busca, com frequência você repete os mesmos velhos erros, voltando a escolher muitas e muitas vezes o mesmo tipo familiar de pessoa que faz você se sentir inseguro.”

36 Questions for Increasing Closeness
Instructions – Take turns asking one another the questions; each person should answer each question, but in an alternating order, so that a different person goes first each time.
Set I
Given the choice of anyone in the world, whom would you want as a dinner guest?
Would you like to be famous? In what way?
Before making a telephone call, do you ever rehearse what you are going to say? Why?
What would constitute a “perfect” day for you?
When did you last sing to yourself? To someone else?
If you were able to live to the age of 90 and retain either the mind or body of a 30-year-old for the last 60 years of your life, which would you want?
Do you have a secret hunch about how you will die?
Name three things you and your partner appear to have in common.
For what in your life do you feel most grateful?
If you could change anything about the way you were raised, what would it be?
Take four minutes and tell your partner your life story in as much detail as possible.
If you could wake up tomorrow having gained any one quality or ability, what would it be?
Set II
If a crystal ball could tell you the truth about yourself, your life, the future, or anything else, what would you want to know?
Is there something that you’ve dreamed of doing for a long time? Why haven’t you done it?
What is the greatest accomplishment of your life?
What do you value most in a friendship?
What is your most treasured memory?
What is your most terrible memory?
If you knew that in one year you would die suddenly, would you change anything about the way you are now living? Why?
What does friendship mean to you?
What roles do love and affection play in your life?
Alternate sharing something you consider a positive characteristic of your partner. Share a total of five items.
How close and warm is your family? Do you feel your childhood was happier than most other people’s?
How do you feel about your relationship with your mother?
Set III
Make three true “we” statements each. For instance, “We are both in this room feeling…”
Complete this sentence: “I wish I had someone with whom I could share…”
If you were going to become a close friend with your partner, please share what would be important for them to know.
Tell your partner what you like about them; be very honest this time, saying things that you might not say to someone you’ve just met.
Share with your partner an embarrassing moment in your life.
When did you last cry in front of another person? By yourself?
Tell your partner something that you like about them [already].
What, if anything, is too serious to be joked about?
If you were to die this evening with no opportunity to communicate with anyone, what would you most regret not having told someone? Why haven’t you told them yet?
Your house, containing everything you own, catches fire. After saving your loved ones and pets, you have time to safely make a final dash to save any one item. What would it be? Why?
Of all the people in your family, whose death would you find most disturbing? Why?
Share a personal problem and ask your partner’s advice on how they might handle it. Also, ask your partner to reflect back to you how you seem to be feeling about the problem you have chosen.
Final task / suggestion – Stare into each other’s eyes for four minutes.

some of my dgs faves reading the self-help workbook i'm currently working with ("The Highly Sensitive Person" by Dr Elaine N. Aron)
kazuma: pitches the book into the Thames when asked to do the reframing exercise at the end of chapter 1
barok: cries effusively and cathartically. places many markers for important passages. makes cramped annotations in the margins. he's considering writing a thank-you letter to the author that he may or may not send
herlock: reads the preface, says he could write a better book, forgets about it, and loses it in his sitting room for years
ryunosuke: reads it slowly. makes kazuma mad by asking questions about its subject material. makes barok weep by even mentioning the title. is approached by herlock demanding to know why ryuu has not asked his opinion (he gets mad when ryuu points out he never read past the preface and therefore doesn't have a valid opinion)
gina: reads it on work breaks and talks with barok about the subject matter obliquely. gives olive green a copy on the downlow
hosonaga: sleeps with it under his pillow
enoch: bursts into flames walking near it
harebrayne: tries to read it but gets too overwhelmed by Being Seen. gets a summary from barok
stronghart: "Yes, I Am A Highly Sensitive Person. I Am The Most Sensitive."
klint: probably bought the copy that barok is reading but never read it himself

Come resto accesa/o? Come resto in vita?
La risposta è sì, c'è posto anche per noi. Anzi per fortuna ci siamo noi. Noi Persone Altamente Sensibili.

The book Grace is reading while Tommy's on a date in 3x14 is The Highly Sensitive Child by Elaine N. Aron. This isn't a book specifically about autistic children, but it is definitely one with content that applies to nearly all autistic kids and only some allistic ones.
So new headcanon: The book is Tommy's, because her twins are autistic, and Grace grabbed it off the shelf instead of a different one because she suspects Charlie is, too. (And Charlie definitely is because now that I think about it, I really do headcanon that Judd and Grace both are, they just need very little support - which means since Grace is a black woman she's undiagnosed, and since Judd is a white man born in most likely the 80s he got an "Asperger's" diagnosis instead of an ASD1 diagnosis and he's been told all his life it's something he grew out of (aka learned how to mask better).)
