J’en ai même pas parlé ici. Mais il y a quelques mois j’ai trouvé pas mal d’actes mentionnant Dorothee Redinger, dont l’acte de naissance de mon ancêtre Catherine (née Madeleine Ackermann).

Je crois qu’une grosse partie a été débroussaillée sur l’histoire de cette ancêtre, même si il reste une ou deux zones d’ombre (qui a élevé sa fille aînée ? Quand s’est elle séparée de son compagnon ?)

Par contre les nouveaux documents révèlent un (autre) cas de vol d’identité (Le classique : une femme utilise l’acte de naissance d’une fille morte en bas âge). La saga continue …

Beautiful 1871 Gingerbread Victorian in New Orleans, Louisiana. 3bds, 3ba, $1.2M.

It's been renovated, but mostly preserved. The woodwork was painted white, but it's still intact and so is the original fireplace, and the room still has the same historic sophistication including double doors to the porch.

A large arch opens to the dining room.

The rich red floors and original fireplace just look so lovely together.

The eat-in kitchen is beautifully redone and is so large that it fits a dining room sized table.

There's a family room off the kitchen next to the stairs. The main staircase is in the middle of the home, which is different. Usually Victorian homes have front entrance main halls.

The music room/den is a lovely tomato red, even the fireplace and shelving look striking in the monochromatic color scheme.

Typically, NOLA homes don't have very large bedrooms and this one is a decent size, considering, and even has a closet. The completely original fireplace is a wonderful bonus.

The completely remodeled bath has some beautiful tile, a classic checkered floor and vintage tub.

Bedroom #2 is a lovely guest room with an elegant chandelier.

This bedroom has an en-suite that's been completely remodeled.

Bedroom #3 has an anteroom for an office, sitting room, or even a nursery.

Plus, it also has a small en-suite.

There's a nice little patio along the side of the house.

The rear entrance is convenient to the 2 car garage around the block.

IRRELEVANT SIDEBAR. i seem to be the only person in the fandom who a) took it as a given that ‘the girl who fell through the world’ was at least a century old and thus predated the great war by at least two or three decades, and b) didn’t think the author’s identity being unknown was odd enough to require an explanation.

alice’s adventures in wonderland! that book is One Hundred Fifty-Eight Years Old. it was published in november 1865. through the looking glass was published six years later in december 1871. CAN YOU NAME THE AUTHOR?

if you answered “lewis carroll,” bzzt! incorrect!

(well, correct in that the books were indeed written under that pseudonym BUT I MEAN HIS REAL NAME.)

alice’s adventures in wonderland is a hundred and fifty-eight years old. it has never been out of print. it’s been translated into a hundred seventy-four languages and it’s one of the best known works of nineteenth century english literature in the world. it’s been adapted many, many times for stage and radio and film and video games. “retelling the true story of alice in wonderland” is like an entire niche fantasy YA subgenre; i could name seven different examples off the top of my head. it’s as close to UBIQUITOUS as it’s possible for a story to be in a world with seven billion people living in it.

and… in a world where the non-pseudonymous identity of the author is thoroughly documented and easily accessible via the internet, the average person who Fondly Remembers watching the disney animated film or having the book read to them as a kid doesn’t know that ‘lewis carroll’ was a pen name.

his real name was charles dodgson.

and the reason the average person doesn’t know that isn’t any kind of individual failing or whatever, it’s just that the book was published almost a hundred and sixty years ago under a pen name. the pen name is what’s on the cover. most people don’t go Looking for biographical information about the authors of books their parents read to them as kids unless they have a particular reason to be interested. such as high octane nerdery.

(i own the 150th anniversary edition of the annotated alice and have read it cover to cover multiple times. and i’ll do it again. i am an Owns Books About The Math In Wonderland kind of nerdy about alice.)

—the point. being. the real world has a lot of things going for it in terms of historical preservation that remnant does not, chiefly the absence of a Fuck Ton of monsters trying to eat everybody all the time and making international travel and communication horrifyingly dangerous on a good day. the CCTS has only existed for a few decades; before that, sharing information between kingdoms was matter of “send an armed convoy and hope they don’t get killed and eaten by The Horrors en route.”

so the scholars of remnant are at, to put it mildly, a serious disadvantage in terms of information being retained over time.

anyway. ‘the girl who fell through the world’ is established very clearly to be remnant’s equivalent of our alice’s adventures in wonderland, in that it is a quite old children’s story that became MASSIVELY POPULAR worldwide, to the point that nearly everyone alive has at least some familiarity with the plot, many remember it as a cherished childhood bedtime story, and the more bookish characters can quote favorite passages from memory.

which is to say, it isn’t just The Story is an allusion to the wonderland story. the book’s ubiquity is also modeled after alice’s ubiquity, and the lack of popular knowledge about the author’s real identity likewise takes its cue from the fact that in real life most people Don’t Know who charles dodgson is.

so!!!

it’s not at all unreasonable to think that ‘the girl who fell through the world’ is probably meant to be about as old as alice’s adventures in wonderland—about a hundred fifty years, which would mean lewis published it around sixty years before the great war even started. (he also presumably didn’t publish it as a child; if he was about the age dodgson was when alice went to print, this would have been around twenty years after the fact.)

and it’s also not unreasonable to think that lewis, like charles dodgson, published his book under a pseudonym. or anonymously, but given how certain jaune is that alyx wrote the book, even though it was lewis taking notes and lewis saying he would write the story for jaune to find his way home…

i’d put my bet on lewis having written his book as “A.L. [Surname].” A for alyx, L for lewis, a symbolic way for her to come home with him. but the girls upon discovering the ever after is real and alyx was real would of course think “oh, ‘AL’ as in short for alyx” and the use of initials is also ambiguous enough for jaune to worry his way to the conclusion that he did, after alyx poisoned him.

fast forward a century and a half or so in a setting with no internet for most of that and hordes of man-eating Nightmare Beasts inhibiting international communication and… yeah of course the Real Name of beloved children’s classic author A.L. Whoever isn’t common knowledge outside of academic and hobbyist carrollian-equivalent circles.

On this day, 23 June 1848, National Guard were called out to repress a working class insurrection which had broken out in France, but instead they mutinied en masse. Some guardsmen from poor areas had joined the June Days uprising which began the previous day in protest at the proposed closure of national workshops which gave jobs to the unemployed. Even in the wealthier arrondissements of Paris, a majority of the guardsmen stayed at home. In the city's affluent central districts, only 4,000 out of a force of 64,000 took up their arms. In total only around 12,000 guardsmen in the city, mostly from richer areas, took part in the repression. For example, National Guard troops shot to death two sex workers who were fighting on the barricades. National Guard troops would mutiny once more in the Paris commune of 1871, after which it was disbanded. Pour comprendre qui nous sommes, Français, vus de l'étranger, les 18 ans d'expatriation que j'ai dans les pattes rendent un fier service. Cette description du ressentiment presque universel envers la petite France est exact, et souvent relancé depuis l'Angleterre. Master-Commander, Robin Hood, Henri V... tous les 3 ans Albion refait un coup de bashing. Personne en France ne leur rend la monnaie de leur pièce, la plupart d'entre nous ignorent cet enjeu, ne savent même pas la différence entre Angleterre et Royaume-Uni, et une grande partie encore ignore même où se trouve cette île. Donc nous sommes loin de sortir des films sur Patay, Formigny, La Brossinière, Walcheren, La Corogne, Chesapeake, Fontenoy etc.

J'ai eu 2 passions entre 2002 et 2004, années de claustration et de lecture où je ne quittais Grenoble que pour aller à Paris piller la librairie de la rue Bargue pour les guerres européennes de 1792-1815 et la librairie L'Harmattan pour les guerres du Vietnam 1945-1975. Bref ce que dit Pierre est exact également, et lorsque l'on est un patriote "traditionnel" on sait que l'usurpateur Corse a été une catastrophe politique pour le pays, au moins égale à Louis XIV. Grand sujet dont nous reparlerons si Dieu veut. En ce qui concerne les scènes honteuses de soumission aux femmes dans ce film, elles renvoient à une méthode ancienne pour déshonnorer les hommes qui ont menacé l'Angleterre. Souvenez-vous de Robert Carlyle dans "La naissance d'un monstre" lorsqu'il jouait un personnage dont il faut ne même pas citer le nom. Une dizaine de scènes privées le montraient larmoyant et suppliant devant les femmes de sa vie. Vieux, vieux truc anglais pour qui la catégorie du "ridicule" joue un rôle capital dans la culture populaire. Jules Vallès en exil là-bas après 1871 l'a raconté dans son merveilleux livre La rue à Londres.

George Bernard Shaw

Fue un dramaturgo, crítico y polemista irlandés nacido en Dublín en julio de 1856.

Bernard Shaw nació en un barrio de clase media baja de Dublin, fue el único varón de la familia y el primero de una familia de tres hermanas, su padre era un alcohólico que trabajaba de forma irregular como comerciante de maíz.

Durante su época estudiantil, asistió a cuatro escuelas distintas, todas las cuales odiaba, estaba desilusionado con la educación formal, a las que consideraba prisiones y a los maestros carceleros, en los cuales a los niños se les mantiene para evitar decía, “estar molestando a los padres”. En 1871 dejó la escuela para trabajar en una firma de administradoras de fincas, en donde trabajando duro llegó a ser cajero en jefe.

En 1873, la madre de Shaw y dos de sus hermanas, abandonaron Dublin para seguir a quien fuera su pareja sentimental a Londres, un músico bien conocido en Dublin, y debido a la gravedad de una de sus Hermanas, Shaw viajó posteriormente a Londres en 1876 para reunirse con su madre.

En los años siguientes trabajó como periodista y crítico teatral y de música para diversos periódicos, al tiempo que publicaba novelas por entregas. Con muy bajos ingresos, Shaw vivió esos años en relativa penuria.

En 1884 y tras entrar en contacto con la obra de Karl Marx, Shaw se hizo socialista y pasó a formar parte de la sociedad Fabiana, un grupo revolucionario. En 1898, contrajo matrimonio con una Irlandesa que procedía de una familia adinerada.

Para entonces sus trabajos literarios y críticas teatrales lo iban dando cierto renombre.

Shaw escribió mas de sesenta obras, algunas importantes como Hombre y Superhombre en 1905, una teoría de la humanidad como estadio mas avanzado de la evolución de la fuerza vital hacia formas mas espirituales, en donde la influencia de Nietzsche y de Henri Bergson se hacían presentes.

En 1925, recibió el Premio Nobel de Literatura y en 1938 compartió el Oscar de Hollywood al mejor guión adaptado por la versión cinematográfica de Pigmalión, una de las mejores comedias de Shaw que se convirtió en una aguda critica al sistema de clases inglés, a través de hacer pasar a una florista por una dama, para lo cual se le enseña dicción y buenas maneras. Shaw se convirtió en la primera persona en recibir el Nobel y el Oscar. 

Shaw sobrevivió a la Segunda Guerra Mundial y durante sus últimos años disfrutó de cuidar los jardines de Shaw´s Corner, su residencia situada en la pequeña villa de Ayot St. en Inglaterra. Murió a la edad de 94 años de una insuficiencia renal producto de una caída mientras podaba un árbol.
