Donate to victims of Brazil floods from abroad
Tumblr media
Brazil’s southernmost state of Rio Grande do Sul, a state the size of Ecuador, has been devastated by historic floods, with most of its 497 municipalities in a state of public calamity. Authorities have described the crisis as “war-like” and consider it the state’s worst crisis caused by natural disasters ever.
Roughly 200,000 people were forced out of their homes, according to state officials. The death toll, which has been growing fast, is inching closer to the mark of 100 — and there are still more than 130 people missing.
A series of public and private initiatives are collecting donations in order to mitigate the devastating effects of the crisis. Post offices in the states of São Paulo and Paraná, as well as some in Rio Grande do Sul, for example, offered to collect and transport donations free of charge.

the number of afab people replying to the pain poll going "yeah I've broken limbs and had 1st degree burns and given birth but nothing tops my menstrual pain" is so fucked up it is unbelievable. and I was right there with everyone else until I stumbled on a low dose progestin regimen that just made me stop menstruating. which I would recommend to everyone except it just doesn't work for everyone. ask your doc about it though, it won't cause permanent side effects or injury to try it out. i take norethindrone 2.5mg 2x/day. this dose has to be different for each patient to work correctly, that's just what I take. there's some research to suggest synthetic progesterone like norethindrone is carcinogenic so I'm going to look into switching. anyway i just got extremely lucky. there is seriously nothing like it. it was the worst pain I ever felt until the urology incident and frankly I think the menstrual pain was already a factor in the outcome of the urology incident

A new "woolly devil" sunflower from Big Bend National Park!
Sunflowers come in all shapes and sizes, and the group has gained a new member. Nicknamed the “woolly devil,” Ovicula biradiata is the product of the amazing bi-national collaboration between taxonomists, conservationists, and community scientists in Big Bend National Park. But it comes at a time when the future of National Parks is uncertain.
“I think this particular discovery has inspired a lot of people outside of the world of biodiversity science to recognize that we still have a lot of work to do in terms of just describing the biodiversity in environments as iconic as the US National Parks” says Isaac Lichter Marck, one of the taxonomists involved in the description. “We assume that because it's found within a US national park that it'll be within an environment that's preserved into the future. That's been the ideal of national parks. But I think in the current reality we have to be cautious about that assumption.”
Listen in to learn more about Isaac and his work, the tremendous effort that went into this discovery, and what the future might look like for this little plant and others.

The sea doesn’t look like a graveyard; it’s lively, joyous, and sparkling. It changes its finery in order to please the sky, soaring above. Sometimes it dresses in blue, sometimes in green, and sometimes in gray. It only dresses in black when the winds blow up from the lands to the south where the climate is too hot. Its waves then swell and heave, revealing their teeth of foam.

Mike's faith in Will being alive circa season 1
Since s5 is supposed to go full circle back to s1/2 I neeeed there to be an acknowledgment towards the fact that Mike was the only one (aside from the Byers -- initially just Joyce) who had faith in Will being alive. Mike and Joyce's love for Will knows no bounds. Of course this doesnt mean that Jonathan and the other boys don't love Will, of course they do. But Joyce and Mike were so stubborn about the fact that Will was still alive and out there somewhere. What Joyce has for Will is a mother's intuition, but Mike also has this like, 6th sense when it comes to Will being endangered, he notices when Will isn't doing well and always checks up on him (movie theater scene in s3).
Since we're fairly certain that the first episode of s5 is "The Vanishing of Holly Wheeler" then what if Holly goes missing and Mike obviously feels like it's his responsibility as her older sibling to go search for her, and Will also volunteers for this mission which leads Mike to being like 'hell no i'm not letting you put yourself in danger again' and Will is like "Well, you helped look for me when everyone else thought I was dead, you were the only one who believed I was still alive. You saved my life. So now I'm gonna repay the favor" and Mike getting flustered like "Well it wasn't just me" (cause it was him + Byers + El who all really had faith). Mike cant argue with Will's point so he decides that it's okay to bring Will along on this mission and this is actually okay with him because he'll be right in Will's vicinity in case anything bad happens (since lets be honest Will has the biggest target on his back especially since he left the last season supernaturally unharmed, I cant speak for emotionally...he was definitely emotionally harmed)
Still trying to figure out the fact that apparently Byler + Robin are a team this season, like obv there are lgbtq implications there but having Robin third wheel is kinda craaazyy . Maybe they run into Vickie?

with all of this talk of climate + touring etc. i just wanted to post about reverb, an organization that partners with musicians, festivals, and venues to help make their concerts/events a little more environmentally friendly! they do some really great work, and i've always found their impact reports really interesting too 🤍 they've worked with artists such as the 1975, lorde, billie eilish, paramore, boygenius, among others! they're currently only accepting volunteers for the 1975's UK still... at their very best tour, but it's a great org to follow! 🤍

Brazil's Supreme Court strengthens control over gold trade and takes a crucial step towards Amazon conservation
Justices overturn the presumption of good faith in the purchase and sale of gold in Brazil
Tumblr media
In a landmark decision, the majority of the justices of the Brazilian Supreme Court ruled the presumption of good faith in the purchase and sale of gold in Brazil unconstitutional. This decision marks a crucial step forward in curbing illegal mining, especially in the Amazon, where the activity has caused devastating environmental impacts and violated the rights of indigenous and riverside communities, even reaching cities through the contamination of fish that spread across the region.
The court's decision rectifies a serious distortion in current legislation, which allowed buyers of the metal, such as Securities and Exchange Commissions, to accept only the miner's self-declaration regarding the origin of the gold, absolving them of any liability if the extraction was illegal. The presumption of good faith in the gold chain had been used as a legal loophole to legitimise the sale of gold extracted through criminal means, including gold taken from Indigenous Lands and Protected Areas. The ruling’s unconstitutionality and the subsequent ban on using this loophole strengthens oversight, protects communities affected by illegal mining, and reduces the funding of criminal networks exploiting this market.
The presumption of good faith had already been suspended by an injunction issued by Justice Gilmar Mendes in April 2023. Now, with the final decision, Brazil is taking a decisive step forward in combating environmental degradation caused by illegal mining, while also preventing criminal organisations from continuing to profit from the unlawful exploitation of these areas.

Seeing so much misinformation on Hurricane Milton and Hurricane Helene has inspired me to make this post.
Disclaimer: I am a biologist that is somewhat knowledgeable about weather because I'm afraid of thunderstorms, not a meteorologist.
How do Hurricanes form?
Hurricanes are super destructive weather events that occur in tropical ocean waters. In order for a hurricane to form there needs to be warm-ish water (26 degrees Celsius or 80 degrees Fahrenheit) ranging to 50 meters deep. Hurricanes move in from the east and travel west, bringing in cooler air.
Tumblr media
The hot air from the ocean is forced to rise and force a burst of low pressure underneath, which unfortunately creates more heat to fuel the storm.
Wind is blown in from the Sahara Desert (for the US east coast anyway) and moves the pressure wave onwards. When the wind hits the ocean surface it creates droplets and vapor; contributing to the giant storms that hurricanes are associates with
Tumblr media
With climate change, ocean waters are getting warmer. Warmer water means a larger pressure change which means more severe storms.

If you would like to know more, I recommend this video on Hurricanes by the NOAA. All pictures are from the Scijinks website!

It kinda blew my mind when I realized I'd actually met R.F.K. Jr. (the guy who's now a Trump loyalist)...
back when I was a teenager, and he was one of the people on the Left fighting for Environmental Justice. Y'see, this was the early '80s, and at the time, my mother was President of the Board of Directors of the Environmental Advocacy and Education Organization The Hudson River Sloop Clearwater:
Tumblr media
(Image source: (C) Alan Thomas. Clearwater.org)
R.F.K Jr. had been convicted of drug charges, and was doing community service as an environmental lawyer, pro bono.
I have clear-but-only-a-snapshot memory of riding somewhere in a van (or R.V.?) with my mom, going to a protest event, or something. And she and he were talking about (I think) either legal strategies to sue G.E. for dumping P.C.B.s into the Hudson.
If now me could go back in time and warn then me that the man sitting across from her would some day align himself with Donald Trump, of all people, she-me would not believe me-me...
...Just turn your back for a couple decades and look what happens.
