DCMK Blu-rays

A list of Detective Conan and Magic Kaito content with physical HD releases.

This won't be comprehensive by any means; I'm going to be focusing on Japanese, German, and United States releases because these are the ones that I own and am most familiar with. I believe that many of the films are also available on Blu-ray in several countries, dubbed in several languages, but I don't have much concrete knowledge about that at this moment. Please feel free to add any information!

That said, the main thing to know about Detective Conan Blu-rays is that... they kind of don't really exist. The television series is (mainly, more on this later) released on DVD only in Japan, usually with the equivalent of four episodes per disc, sold at 4,620 yen each. They're grouped in "Parts," with up to 10 Volumes per Part, and the next release, on June 23rd, will be Part 31, Volume 3, containing episodes 1007, 1008, 1010, and 1013.

A handful of episodes are released on Blu-ray via collections in Japan; there are the Treasured Selections and Akai Family TV Selections. But with a series running over 1,000 episodes, it really is just a handful of episodes available in these collections.

Beyond these, the TV-original specials Episodes 804-805 ("Conan and Ebizo's Kabuki Juhachiban Mystery") and Episodes 965-968 ("Kaiju Gomera VS Kamen Yaiba"), plus the canon Episodes 927-928 ("The Scarlet School Trip"), are also available on Blu-ray.

Finally, special edition Blu-rays for Movies 17-25 include a second disc containing the movie's tie-in anime episode... but that second disc is likely a DVD, speaking as someone who doesn't own any of these but does own the Japanese special edition Blu-rays for Movies 14 through 16, where the second discs are, indeed, DVDs.

German Blu-rays

Outside of Japan, Germany is currently releasing boxed sets of the Detective Conan series starting from Episode 1. At this time, these are the only physical releases of the remastered footage (which make a big difference), and they include Japanese and German audio (but any German-dubbed songs are omitted). Three boxes are available now, covering Episodes 1 to 96 (or 102 with the international numbering); a fourth box is set to be released on May 19th, covering up until Episode 122 (or 129 with the international numbering).

Do note that these releases edit the name boxes in a way that can't be turned off, however.

In Germany, all of the same content is available on Blu-ray. There's also a Blu-ray release for The Scarlet Alibi, and I believe that they're the only ones with a physical HD release of Gosho Aoyama's Collection of Short Stories as well.

Episode One: The Great Detective Turned Small

As far as I'm aware, there are no HD releases anywhere of the OVAs. They're available on DVD in Japan, either separately or via four "Secret File" compilations (though these only cover OVAs 1-9).

There also aren't any HD releases of the Magic/Bonus files, but DVDs are included with the Japanese special edition versions of Movies 12-16. They're also available for individual purchase in Japan as well.

TV Specials 1, 2, and 4 (with 3 being the Lupin special, 5 being The Disappearance of Conan Edogawa, and 6 being Episode One) seem to be DVD only, too. Actually, I'm not sure if TV Special 1,"Time Travel of the Silver Sky," is available on disc at all? But TV Special 2, "Black History," is said to be included with the Japanese special edition DVD of the second live-action drama special, and TV Special 4, "Fugitive: Kogoro Mori," is included on the Part 24, Volume 7 DVD.

TV Special 7, "Love Story at Police Headquarters ~Wedding Eve~," might be included on Blu-ray in Japan with the special edition of Movie 25, but I can't confirm if that disc is a Blu-ray or DVD right now (and the same goes for The Scarlet Alibi, included with the special edition of Movie 24 in Japan).

The eight VHS-only Shogakukan Illustrated Encyclopedia Series tapes are obviously not available in HD, either.

Tl;dr?

So, in short, combining releases and eliminating the not-remastered Treasured Selections, you can find 186 episodes on Blu-ray right now (with more on the way with the fourth Detektiv Conan box). You can also get all of the films and Magic Kaito series, plus a few specials, in HD.

And I think that's all I've got! Feel free to add more information if you know any! I am desperate to physically own more HD DCMK content.

EDIT: I've done some more digging, and from what I can tell, starting with Movie 24, the Japanese special edition Blu-rays for the films changed the bonus second disc from a DVD to a Blu-ray instead. This means that Episode 1,002, "The Beika City Shopping Center Garbage Bin Mystery," included with the special edition of Movie 24, as well as Episode 1,039, "The Flying Jack-o'-lantern," included with the special edition of Movie 25, are available on Blu-ray, too. So, a more accurate number of episodes that have been released on Blu-ray (in HD) at this time is actually 188. Further, this confirms that The Scarlet Alibi and TV Special 7 are also available on Blu-ray in Japan.

Additionally, though I have provided a couple of links throughout this post, the Detective Conan World wiki deserves a bigger shout out than I initially gave; their "Collectibles" page, and particularly their "Japanese Blu-ray" article, were a huge help in compiling the information laid out here. Many, many thanks to the contributors.

And while I'm here, for those interested in English-language releases specifically, Magic's Detective Agency is a fantastically detailed resource for every DVD released by FUNimation (Volumes, Season Sets, and Films). They're not HD releases, true, but at the time, they're the only physical releases of any episodes and the first six films in English.

Finally, I also discovered that a fifth Detektiv Conan box is set to be released on July 21st! This should mean that remastered episodes up until 145 (or 155 with the international numbering) will be available on Blu-ray, and it bodes well for these releases to continue. Hopefully, there will be physical releases of the remastered footage in other countries, too!

AN: I wanted to do a story to showcase the hardships health care workers faced when covid hit. The doctors and nurses put our health first during a worldwide crisis and we should be forever grateful for that even without a pandemic to prove what should always be known.

Summary: Amber and Pierce try to convince Ian to get treatment but he refuses and tells them why.

Amber stands six feet from Maggie Pierce who explains the severity of Ian Talbert’s condition as he lies in bed with a nasal cannula. He has been coughing violently for three minutes straight that suggest he’s getting worse by the minute. Amber looks at him in pity trying to stay in doctor mode even with a patient she likes.

Ian sips his water before responding to his diagnosis, “I’m dying?”

Maggie explains, “Your lungs have glass opacities which increase the density and make it more difficult for you to breathe. Based on your coughing, the pneumonia is getting worse and we should start heavy antibiotics and keep you here for the next two weeks until you improve. If this persists, we can talk about removing the damaged parts of your lung surgically with your consent.”

“And what happens if I don’t do the meds or surgery? How long?”

Maggie thinks, “Given the rapid progression I would say a night before…”

Ian lays back in bed with a blank face for a few moments before he inhales deeply and coughs out, “No.”

The women look at the 64-year-old confused before Amber asks, “What do you mean no?”

“No treatment.” Amber widens her eyes at that in shock, “Just keep me here until I croak and call my attorney, he’s in charge of the arrangements.”

“Ian…” Amber sits in a chair next to Ian who is coughing lightly, “I know this is scary but there is a chance this could work if we do it now and we do it fast.”

“I appreciate that, really, I do. You’ve all been so good to me, and you’ve made this experience slightly less unbearable. But when this started, I told myself ‘Ian if you get this thing just let it take you and it’ll all be over’ I know that sounds bleak and you think I’m taking the easy way out but I’m not.”

Maggie steps in, “Ian, I don’t know you and you don’t know me. But I care about you, and I want to fight for you to keep going. Now if you want us to stop treatment that is your decision, but I need to know you are absolutely sure about this. It’s a big decision and you need to think about it before it’s too late. We’re at the early stages so survival is possible, you just have to be willing to fight for you too.”

Ian looks at the women in thought before pointing at the three white boards he wrote his equations on, “Can you tell me what you see?”

Amber looks at the math, but she doesn’t recognize the technique as it’s for risk factor, “I don’t know it looks like linear algebra maybe.”

Ian nods, “Your right. This board calculates the odds of having a baby over the age of 30. It also shows the odds she’ll have blonde hair.” Ian points at the second board, “These are the odds of her reading before she’s six. These are the odds of her making cadet sergeant in her high schools ROTC group.”

Ian chuckles nostalgically coughing before continuing, “These are the odds she’ll choose to enlist in the army instead of the air force.”

Ian points at the third board that causes him to freeze with agony written on his face causing Amber and Maggie to look at him in sympathy as they can already guess what the board shows.

Ian swallows and speaks in a broken voice, “These are the odds of her being blown up in an IED explosion in Afghanistan at the age of 22.” Amber looks down feeling sad for a man who knows a pain no parent should ever experience. Maggie sighs and looks up at the ceiling also affected but let’s Ian continue his sad story written on the boards.

“The odds of your marriage surviving the death of your only child…of you losing your job.”

Amber looks up at Ian who is tearing up, “I am so sorry.”

Ian nods, “I know you want me to fight but I don’t have it in me anymore. I’m just so tired, I just.” Ian starts to cough, “I just want it to-” Ian coughs violently causing Maggie to increase his oxygen intake to 90 causing him to breath more easily after a few moments. He lays there still coughing but only slightly.

Ian faces Amber who is still sitting on the chair, “I just want it to stop. Please let it stop.”

Maggie nods understanding this isn’t a light decision, “Okay it’s okay.”

Amber nods knowing there’s nothing they can do at this point, “We’ll make you comfortable and ease your pain with some meds until…I’ll be right here until the end. I swear.”

“Is there someone we can call for you?” Maggie asks, “Someone who wants to say goodbye?”

Ian coughs, “There’s just my ex-wife and I don’t think she wants to see me right now. I wasn’t the best guy after Olivia died certainly not the best husband.” Ian looks at Maggie who frowns in sadness, “Do you think she would care if I…?”

Amber nods knowing no matter how mad she is at him if it was Andrew in bed dying, she would want to know and get to say goodbye before it’s too late, “I would, if I was her, I would care and I would want to say goodbye.”

Ian looks on in thought before deciding, “Can you get me a tablet and leave me to talk to her alone?”

“Of course, Karev?” Amber stands up and exits the room with Maggie, “I have other patients to see, can you monitor and update me if he changes his mind?”

“Yeah. I’ll get his wife on zoom and leave them to talk…I really thought he was gonna make it.”

Maggie nods, “I know…just make him comfortable and let me know when we can contact his attorney.” Amber nods before grabbing a tablet and taking a deep breath before going back inside Ian’s room.

So. What does this mean. I remember doing the math for when the Ultimate Weapon/ the first kalosian war but Tumblr won't let me find it so! Time to do this allllllll over again. Which isn't hard lol. The events of the ultimate weapon was 3,000 years before XY. My version of XY takes place in 2014. Doing the math, that would mean the ultimate weapon was fired and AZ became immortal in 986.

My version of Emerald/ORAS takes place in 2006. Zinnia stated that AZ was there to witness the mega Rayquaza stopping Primal Groudon and Kyogre 1000 years ago. Again, doing the quick math, that would be in 1006.

This means that

1) Surprisingly, in the Legendverse, the ultimate weapon is more ancient that the fight between the ancient pokemon. I mean. It's likely they've fought before, but they were witnesses this time to record it.

2) Between the ultimate weapon and the fight between the primal ancient pokemon, AZ has been immortal for 20 years then. I like to think that by that point in time, it really sunk to AZ that he was going to live forever. Not that one can't just live for 20 years, but given what AZ has been through, I can see it.

3) Looking up Sootopolis City, it was created 1000 years from the main events of the game, which was also the time the primal legendaries fought and mega Rayquaza stopped them. We aldo know that AZ was there. We don't know how long it was until the citizens of Sootopolis actually came to Sootopolis, though it can be assumed a few years after the place was created. Let's say 2-5 years for at least people to get in. And given how AZ gave the tree in front of the cave of Origin, it can be theorized that the tree was planted around 1008-1011, at least.

I won't lie. This is pretty useless knowledge regarding the overall legendverse. I mean not in the lore, this is pretty important to the history and culture of Hoenn and Kalos. But will it feed into anything? Probably not.

And I am sure there won’t be consequences for d and r marrying semi-secretively without the King’s permission right after the death of their spouses, because there’s ANOTHER time skip next episode. It’s a big scandal in the books, it pisses Viserys off A LOT because of how blatantly disrespectful it is to their late spouses, and it heightens the tensions between the blacks and the greens. But I am sure we are just going to skip all that because god forbid we see any fallout from any major event.

Of course.

And like this whole blacks vs. greens thing ... I don't care. The disdain they have for each other should be palpable and it should be dangerous, if the whole thing is the House of the Dragon needs to be united to stay together then the fact that there are clearly sides should invite other houses to try and benefit from that, we should see how their internal war weakens them, we should see it as being a war, Rhaenyra vs Alicent should have more teeth than a simple "let me see the baby when it's born" and a dialogue scene at the small council, if there's no bloodshed and it's strictly dialogue, it should be like Tywin vs Olenna, Alicent should be manipulating circumstances that isolate Rhaenyra even further, like SOMETHING should be happening. We should see exactly how the rumours of Rhaenyra's children affect them and her, the only people we see call them bastards are part of her family, we should see distress instead of borderline monotonous expository dialogue. The Pillars of the Earth was an eight episode mini series of a book that's 1008 pages and it managed to do a MUCH better job.

deimos-v.wad: Deimos: Slight Return E2M4 (1008, -1733, 0) Author: ReX Claussen Date: 2011-12-08 Description: Nine maps that attempt to capture the look and feel of the original Episode 2. While the influence of the original E1 maps is unmistakable, the player will note some significant differences. First, the gameplay is markedly different. While using only the enemies in E2, Deimos: Slight Return is meant to be tougher and more challenging -- more enemies in tighter situations; better balanced ammo, health, & armor; and better use of the tougher enemies. Second, the map layouts are often very different from the originals. The logical progression has changed, as have many of the methods of accessing the secrets. I have done this while trying to retain the appearance and scale of the original, so that the player has a sense of deja vu. I emphasize that each map is built from scratch, with the originals only used for reference. Third, the architecture is updated to current standards while staying within the limits of vanilla DooM. For, although players will undoubtedly use source ports, these levels are ultimately meant to be enjoyed first with vanilla DooM. Fourth, the original E2 did not use editing tricks that are not uncommon in today's maps -- instantly lowering sectors, 3D bridges, etc. Phobos Revisited occasionally does.
