All I think about right now is how most of Shadow's rough characterization during early IDW *could* be explained by how he blames himself for the Phantom Ruby incident and I know that's probably not ever going to be brought up but I can still headcanon his actions into making a degree of sense. "I left one seemingly harmless bad guy alive and he nearly destroyed the planet, I can't let that happen ever again." "I could have stopped Eggman's world conquest if I had acted earlier. I can't put off a fight with his forces under any circumstances." "My closeness to my allies was used as a weapon against me, I have to distance myself from others for their own good." It's not perfect but I feel like it's something they could build on to explain some of that early wonkiness.
