Rewriting "High Card" (Season 1)

This is the first anime I've rewritten episode for episode--and this is mainly because it's only two short seasons. I actually really enjoyed this series, and it's one of the few original animes I've watched (and a bright side after being heavily disappointed by "Bucchigiri?!"), but since I'm in the business of doing rewrites now, I decided to fix some story issues I found with this show (mainly character-related), though I wanted to wait until finishing season 2 to make sure my criticisms would be alleviated. Since there isn't too much I dislike, there won't be too much to change, though I wrote this mostly for myself. Here's hoping for a 3rd season!

One Shot--One of the good/bad things about this show is that they pretty much dive right into the action. It's good since it gets your attention, but leaves something to be desired for the story. For this episode, I'd want to give more attention to Finn's time in the orphanage (the whole reason he's a pickpocket, yet his time there is barely covered).

2. Make a Choice--Mostly the same, but again giving more information on Finn's time at the orphanage, as well as seeing him interact with the people there (especially Lindsey). I'd also alter the ages a bit so they feel closer. In the series, Vijay is 26, Wendy is 21, Chris is 20, and Finn is 17. I'd probably make them all in their early 20s (Vijay being older felt like it took him out of the spotlight, and I felt like it fit Finn better to be older). I'd also alter Chris' personality a bit; in the anime, his charming personality is often framed as disingenuous to hide his selfish nature underneath due to his own trauma. I like the idea that his flirtiness and charismatic attitude isn't false bravado, and that's just who he is, along with being contemplative and serious when the time calls for it. The origins of Fourland are also explained here instead of in episode 6.

3. Crazy Rich--Leo is also aged up to around the same age as the other High Card youths, with it being stated that he and Vijay are childhood friends (in contrast to the original, where they have a 12 year age gap and Vijay is seen raising him; this is mainly because Vijay gets such little focus and I never understood why he'd be looking after Leo at such a young age). I'd also want a bit more focus on Leo's backstory and his relationship with his father, Owen, and Bernard. I'd also set the scene for Theodore and Ban's relationship as well as hints at Ban's main goal (which the anime waited until the end to address, and it didn't really go anywhere).

4. Samurai Girl--A bit more of Wendy's past is dived into rather than a short backstory, and 'd make it so that Vijay is the one to disarm Love-P rather than Finn (given that I want other characters to get a chance to shine outside of Chris and Finn). Chris is unavailable to be in the fight at that time because he got an emergency call from Michel, who just wanted to see him, and she tells him that she's being discharged from the hospital soon. Apple also becomes Finn's first friend unrelated to High Card and the orphanage.

5. Power Game--Sugar catches on a bit quicker to the events of what's going on in the country, as well as being more sly and tactful rather than just headstrong. She also goes on leave after the death of John Doe. We also hear about how Ban's father died and his hints at wanting to get him back at any cost. Vijay, Bernard, and Leo also explain the power of X-hands and how they come at a great cost, explaining how Ban attempted to use it years ago to reverse time to save his father, but Theodore prevented it, and that his aim is to use an X-hand to travel back in time and save him. However, they suspect another goal in mind as well. More info on the royal family is also highlighted, particularly how Noah hired Ban to kill his brothers so he could be king (kinda feel like the show buried the lead with that).

6. Take Back Five--Vijay gets more of the focus here, being the one to orchestrate the acquisition of the 5 of Diamonds. Apple is there as well, and shows an unusual desire to obtain the card, despite Finn never revealing to him it's nature. I'd like to think Bernard also is present for this, though Leo is mixed about this, feeling mixed about it, not wanting his father to distrust him, but also wanting to make him proud. It's also implied that Finn knew that Chris switched out the 5 of Diamonds dueling the auction, but he believes that Chris turned it in to HC, so he didn't confront him about it.

7. Love and Fake--It is confirmed that Chris is bisexual--not for fanservice reasons (even though I am a Chris/Finn shipper), but he says in season two after rescuing Finn "I'm into holding men, too," and I feel like it'd come up while he and Finn are conjoined. It's also revealed that Chris had been trying to woo Chelsea for a short while in order to get her card, but while she was catching feelings, she saw through his flirting, since it's robotic as he does it with many women. While conjoined, we see flashbacks of Chris and Finn's lives (particularly about their parents), as well as Chris deciding to be a bit more contemplative about him playing with others' feelings, even if it's for the greater good. The episode plays out mostly the same, save for Chris asking Chelsea out for a date on his next day off (I'm a Chris/Chelsea shipper, as you can see), but to everyone's surprise, Leo has hired her as a member of High Card, using her social media presence to promote the company.

8. Heat Up--Up to this point, Finn has been making periodic visits to the orphanage and helping Lindsey cover the payments, and brings Chelsea and Wendy (the only members of HC available) as well as Apple to come with him for Lindsey's birthday. Lindsey still turns down his offer to get more money to help keep the orphanage open, and Finn also notes how Lindsey reminds him of someone he used to know, though Lindsey doesn't press him on it, knowing that his past is painful to recall. Chris also doesn't refer to himself as brother to Finn (this would be to maintain the fanservice). Most of the episode plays out the same, though Apple has a breakdown when he thinks Finn died.

9. By Your Side--Chelsea and Chris visit Finn, revealing that when Chelsea joins two people, she also develops a connection with them, able to read their emotions, and sometimes their thoughts, allowing her to convey to Chris Finn's pain. Most of the episode plays out the same, though the episode ends with Chelsea coming to a realization, and she rushes to find Michel, who's escaped the hospital again, as well as Finn noting that he needs to check on Apple after his mission is over.

10. To Be Apart--Given that Chris' backstory is already explored prior, the episode focuses more on Ban's motives (before this, we'd just heard it explained rather than see it) and how Theodore's adherence to the rules only became stronger with time. I'd also say that Arya was fired from HC rather than simply leaving, since helping Tyler breaks a significant rule. The other members of HC aren't put on standby, so Vijay and Wendy rescue Chris, and Chris quickly disappears after getting Alex's card. Finn gets a call from Leo, who tells him that Chelsea informed him that Chris is looking for Michel in order to heal her with an X-hand. Finn subsequently passes out from his injuries rather than Chris shooting him.

11. Chris--Most of the episode's the same, except everyone already knows Chris' motives, and Chelsea manages to find Michel at the carnival just as Chris does. Lindsey returns Chris' money to Finn, but it motivates Finn to work harder to save the orphanage even more, and we get a glimpse of Finn's brother, who up to this point he had forgotten, which pushes him to protect Lindsey, the orphanage, and High Card (Chris included).

12. Finn--The royal family is still defended by HC, but Finn immediately goes after Chris rather than being knocked out and hospitalized. Tilt stops him, taking from some of season 2 and revealing that he's Finn's brother, and doesn't want to hurt him, but has sympathy for Chris, which is why he joined Ban, who also has something he wants to get back. Chelsea is also never injured and uses her telepathy to distract Chris in order for Finn to shoot one of the cards out of his hands. In the end, Chris is fired from High Card (considering he did something that is completely against the rules), though he still needs money in order to support himself and Michel, and Ban offers him a place with the Klondike family. He doesn't have to do any of the extreme dirty work, but he would have to go against his former friends. Chris agrees for a couple reasons: to support himself and Michel, out of sympathy for Ban, and because he believes High Card will eventually beat the Klondike family.

GS4 vs AJ:AA - Episode 3, Part 2

Good, I’m not having problems with tumblr this time.

This one’s a bit on the shorter end, which I notice goes for many day 1 trials in cases with more than one trial day, but I can still find plenty of things to share, comment, and explain as always! Like with the previous episode, most of the bulk of work was from the introductions and initial setting.

While the previous one, I could squeal over Yakuza references and all that jazz, this one’s more for Klavier’s fans and classic rock junkies out there. I enjoy the occasional taste of rock too, but sorry, I’m forever a Eurobeat gal.

Oh, if only there were a future AA case about street racing... You just know that Edgeworth would be on that case. He’s probably the only prosecutor (besides maybe Klavier) who can make a sick drift and would know a thing or two about cars. Too bad for the car-less defense attorneys at the Wright Anything Agency, though.

Just wanna share lyrics. The original line, taken literally, is "Slow-acting love [is like] Atroquinine", but it's so vague that it can be reworded many ways, since it’s a song lyric.

Another song reference, but instead of a "Stairway to Heaven", it's a vent-way.

I've been watching way too much Among Us lately... but this episode from back in 2007 seems suspiciously related to a 2018 game, somehow.

その証拠品で、検察側の主張をくつがえすことはできません！ I'm afraid the only thing flipped on its head here was you as a child, Mr. Justice.

<Apollo> （うう‥‥ちがったのか‥‥） (Ugh... I guess that wasn't it.)

Savage, Your Honor! The original line seems a bit disappointing in comparison: "This evidence doesn't overturn the prosecution's case at all!" That said, it does give me an idea for where the "flip on its head" phrasing came from.

<Apollo> 反証のジュンビは‥‥ あ、ありません。 I... don't have contradicting proof, actually.

<Judge> そうですか。それでは、さっさと判決を‥‥ Too bad. Very well, this court finds the defendant...

<Trucy> ま、待ってください！ W-Waaait!

<Judge> な、なんですか。 Wh-What for?

<Trucy> 弁護側には‥‥えーと。は、“はんしょー”でしたっけ？ We have, uh, what was it called? Contradictual proof?

と、とにかく！ジュンビがありますッ！ Anyway, whatever it is, we've got it!

Meanwhile, I think this line from Trucy seems a bit out of place when "contradicting proof" isn't a very difficult phrase to say. Maybe they could have thrown in something sillier like "contradicting poof- I mean, proof!" and it'd work pretty well. In JP, she's still learning her words and especially kanji, so she usually pronounces words correctly, but doesn't write them out in the text.

I like to think that whenever Odoroki speaks and uses phrases that she isn't as familiar with, she actually breaks the fourth wall and takes notes on his textboxes. Hey, learning from your peers is a great way to study! Learning Japanese with your fave Ace Attorney characters is even better.

<Klavier> マチガイないね。‥‥誓ってもいい。この検事生命と‥‥ Absolutely. I'd swear it on my career as a prosecutor...

１００万枚を売り上げたヒット曲、《恋のアトロキニーネ》にかけて。 And on my million-seller hit song "Atroquinine, My Love".

<Trucy> ‥‥さりげなくジマンされちゃいましたね。 ...There he goes again.

<Apollo> ザンネンながら‥‥ この事件には、目撃者がいたのです。 That's too bad, because there was a witness.

Minor tweaking to song titles again. It was "Atroquinine of Love" before.

それは、日本語のジョークか何かですか？　さっぱりです。 Perhaps this is a joke, in your culture?

Making a note here about culture: It's characteristic of Japanese that since they have so many homophones and alike-sounding words or phrases, it's fairly simple to come up with puns out of the blue. You hear it all the time with Japanese comedians and writers who just can't help themselves and have to throw in a pun here or there. And because they can show up so suddenly, it can catch the audience off-guard, so they're more likely to appreciate the humor.

Relatively speaking, of course; as with any language, there are also those kinds of puns that are super obvious and cringy when delivered. As a language buff myself, I'm still fascinated with what goes into creating puns in the first place, whether or not they're cringy or clever.

<Apollo> そして、こうも証言しました。事件については“何も見ていない” Furthermore, you testified that you had "seen nothing".

<Lamiroir> ‥‥！ ...!

あなたが、知っているはずがないのです！ How could you have known!?

<Lamiroir> ！　‥‥‥‥‥‥‥‥‥‥‥‥ ...!

<Lamiroir> きゃあああああああああああッッ！ Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeoooooooowrk!

<Judge> ラミロアさん！ Lamiroir!

‥‥あなた、まさか。何かをかくしているのでは‥‥ You aren't hiding something from this court, I hope!

<Lamiroir> ‥‥‥‥‥‥‥‥‥‥ ......

<Apollo> （ラミロアさんはウソをついた‥‥ 　ゼッタイに何かを隠している！） (That sweet song of hers was sounding a little too sweet!)

So, I'm not sure why Lamiroir's cries were localized to this. It sounds like something so out of place from someone whose voice is so beautiful and melodic usually. Maybe that was the point? Like, it's a subtle nod to sudden record-scratches or sudden cuts in a piece of music?

Fyi, Odoroki's last line here was simply: "(Lamiroir-san was lying... She has to be hiding something!)"

And this last line is totally different. "(Huh... it sounds like they'd be great for vocal training too...)"

("Far more dangerous", huh... Maybe she previously had a tour in the Republic of Zheng Fa... and maybe the Kingdom of Khura'in too.)

<Apollo> （ベツに、歌にはナゾはないと　思うけど‥‥） (I'm not so sure I'm going to be doing much singing...)

By the way, "手まり歌" (temari uta) is roughly like playing handball to a song. A temari is a ball of usually extra kimono cloth wrapped together with fabric. Over Japanese history, it went from a handmade toy to embroidery art. Link to Wikipedia.

Also, "Wild World" is a 1971 hit song by Cat Stevens too. With all the talk of songs, I figured the loc team might have been able to slip in a subtle nod.

Last couple lines there: "Let's build on this mystery song and begin the cross-examination!" "(I don't think the song itself is the mystery here, though...)"

10/21/20 edit: Ash has enlightened me to one of Takumi’s inspirations. Like Agatha Christie’s And There Was None and Van Dine’s The Bishop Murder Case, where a murder seems to follow a nursery rhyme, a classic Japanese mystery novel by Seishi Yokomizo, Akuma no Temari Uta, is a murder mystery that follows the rhymes of a song.

And now looking into his works, I just realized this man is also the legend who wrote the iconic private eye Kosuke Kindaichi. Yeah, the same guy who’s said to be the grandfather to the MC of the Kindaichi Case Files manga, by Yozaburo Kanari. What a small world we live in, after all.

この歌詞の通り、盗まれたレタス氏の死体は‥‥ As it says in the lyrics, Mr. LeTouse...

“空高く”そびえるステージの上で発見された。 ...was found with a guitar, high in the "sky" over the stage.

どうだい？　これだけ一致してたら。もう偶然とはいえないさ。 No series of coincidences could be so well conceived!

<Ema> ‥‥カガク的に言ってもね。 He's right. ...Scientifically speaking.

<Apollo> （‥‥一体、　なんのコンサートだよ‥‥） (What would Wocky have said? ..."That concert was wack.")

<Trucy> あんな風に気持ち良さそうに歌われたら、反論できませんね‥‥ It's hard to argue when she pours her heart into it like that.

<Ema> ‥‥えーと。と、とにかく！犯人は‥‥ Ah, er, ahem! Anyway, the shooter...

Aw, I really wish I could have actually heard Ema sing... or at least hear her textbox beeps change in tone to the music. That would be a bit of extra coding work, though.

By the way, Odoroki was talking about: "(...What kind of concert was this supposed to be...?)"

It was just "(I can't agree with that sentiment at all...)" but I also wanted to make a joke about about "Apopsico".

That last line has gotten a bit more dressing to it. It went "(Maybe he's caught onto something 'unnatural'...)"

For this entry, it's entirely a matter of how LeTouse's last words had to be translated. The original Japanese script didn't leave a lot for him, and there were places where it was quite ambiguous. As it turns out, he wasn't saying "megami", as in "Goddess", but "me ga mienai", as in "unable to see".

"It was... 'The witness... Megami', if I recall. We've heard them many times, with a little play-acting by our defense." "His final words, just before Death clasped on his throat and he was consumed by darkness. ...Those words had something 'following' them." "('Following'... 'Megami'...?) Ah!" "...That's right. This is what LeTouse-san was telling you: 'Ask the witness about the incident. However... that witness...' 'cannot see.' "Megami... enai... You mean, 'me ga mienai'...!?" "Though, it wasn't just Lamiroir-san who 'didn't see'."

Just making a point here since I forgot to last post: Lamiroir and later Machi are the only ones who still call people using "Mr." in English, in the JP script. However, for the briefest moment here, she refers to Mr. LeTouse with the general -san suffix instead, and I don't think this was something that was simply overlooked, since the line immediately after, where she accuses Daryan/Daian, she goes back to using "Mr." Perhaps Lamiroir is getting more and more in-tune with her other language outside of Borginese?

...I'm still sticking to my Poland theory, but they could be like a mix of Poland, Hungary, Slovakia... around there in Eastern Europe.

Hi Axel!

Axel : Hello!

I : How are you?

A : I’m great, what about you?

I : Axel, how do you manage to have this much energy? I know people usually ask me this, but you’re currently on tour all around the country with your show ‘Une vie sur mesure’, and not ‘Une vie meilleure’, as I’ve been saying (mumbled, i don’t understand the rest of his sentence). ‘Une vie meilleure’ is a movie. I confused the two of them.

You’ve just finished filming season 3 and 4 of SKAM. We’ll explain the special format soon, you filmed both seasons together. You’ve just come back from filming a movie and you’re going back tomorrow. How are you living? What’s going on?

A : Listen, it’s cool, you have to enjoy it and I’m really happy and aware of how lucky I am to be able to live out my childhood dreams. But I’m also aware of how ephemeral it can be and that you have to work. You have to enjoy your opportunities but also be aware that everything can be over tomorrow. You have to live everything out as much as possible. This is insane and amazing.

I : And how old are you, Axel?

A : I’m 21.

I : You’re 21. I’d like to say, I’ve seen the first two seasons of SKAM. I just saw the last two, or at least the 3rd one, the leaked episodes. Leaked episodes? No, the ones that came out.

This season is amazing. First of all, we’ve been waiting for LGBT representation for a long time. We can find them after 18 years old, but not never from the point of view of a high school life. I know it’s been good for a lot of young people, I’m thinking about the kids from Le Refuge (French LGBT organisation that’s a shelter for LGBT kids who’ve been kicked out of their homes) who are listening to us. Just for that, congrats on having had the choice to do this role. It’s not an obvious choice for lots of actors. I know it was never a problem for you, but it is for a lot of actors.

On a technical level, this season is extraordinary. The use of lights has nothing to do with first two seasons. I’m only saying that because of cinema fans who might have skimmed over the first two seasons. I’m telling you, this is on another level. I was amazed - not that I didn’t like the first seasons-, I was amazed by this one.

When you got the script, did you know it was well above the first two seasons? Did you realise it? And did you understand that it would be so good on a technical level? The technical work on the lighting is great, especially considering the fact that I know you have really long filming days. 8... 18 usable minutes per day?

A : No, no, it’s about 12 to 14 minutes minimum.

I : Why don’t you explain to us the SKAM experience, after this onslaught of questions?

A : I at least felt, not that it was gonna be above, far from it, but that it was gonna be different. Because for one, for the first two seasons, David Hourregue, the director, and even the writers, we’d signed a contract with France TV... I mean, ‘we signed’, I didn’t sign anything, but they signed the fact that they really had to stick to the original, be the same narrative framework, be close to the original script, and the camera angles, and the story.

So they had this constraint of the Norwegian version in this french adaptation.

I : It was crazy, a huge success over there.

A : And I understand that! It talked about the teenage years and really important matters.

I : With a different tone.

A : With a different tone, not overly emotional. And in this third season, from the beginning, David... David Hourregue, the director, who’s a magnificent conductor, to be able to make 14 usable minutes of footage every day, it’s truly... He’s an amazing team leader, and always with benevolence. He knows how to direct each person with different words, but always in an admirable way... Uhm, he immediately set his conditions, meaning he really wanted this season to be true to his vision, he wanted to be able to change some things from the framework, so that it wouldn’t be a copy and paste from the original.

So right from the beginning, when he showed me the script...

I : Had you seen the original version?

A : Yes, I’d seen it. I’d seen it. And it reassured me too, because it’s true that the characters came from us a lot more, he took inspiration from us because he knew us, to write the characters and to write Lucas’ evolution.

I : He’s a very dreamlike character, he’s a bit like you. We’ll talk about it later.

A : Do you think so?

I : Yeah. He’s a bit like you. There are a lot of differences, but I think he’s a bit like you, in regards to the poetry or the dreamlike quality... He’s someone who could be from the 18th century, the 19th century...

A : That’s nice.

I : It’s a compliment!

A : I’m glad I came!

I : Did you work on... When you got the script, did you tell yourself, ‘okay, when it come to gay representation, or just the representation of a high shcool, love story, but between two guys...” Did you need to look for other movies, or novels? Did you do research work on this? Did you just go on the set spontaneously, as an actor, without any research beforehand.

A : No, no there was research work before. I saw Call Me By Your Name, I saw Moonlight, I saw The Office. Not for the LGBT representation, but for references David wanted me to have. I also did a lot of preparation with Maxence Danet-Fauvel, who plays Eliott.

I : He’s amazing, the two of you have an incredible chemistry.

A : He’s a genius, it was a really beautiful meeting with him. We got very lucky, and we did a lot of work beforehand to have this chemistry, and to know and trust each other. So that when we got on the set, we could just let Maxence and Axel go and really be in character. We trusted the whole team.

You were talking earlier about the photography, and I would like to thank Xavier Dolleans, who’s doing amazing work. He’s an unbelievable operating chief. To do 12 to 14 minutes of usable footage everyday... I don’t know if you guys realise this, it’s truly a lot...

I : 12 to 14 minutes, it’s 12 to 14 minutes of scenes that can be used in the cutting room. Usually, it’s 2 to 3 minutes in movies and 5 to 7 minutes for tv shows. It’s a lot.

A : And to be able to have this maturity with the light, and...I saw him manage his team and it’s really a fantastic team, and it was a team which was dedicated to this story, and everyone really wanted to...There was a week when we did at least three hours of overtime every day.

And there was really a thing where every one was carried by the same energy, and to really...give life to this story, which we all thought was beautiful, and the whole team was really motivated and that also really contributed to the fact that we really had fun, we really enjoyed ourselves, and it really has been a crazy experience to live as these characters and to live this story.

I : And did you know...did you see what we call the rush combo (??), did you realise that from a technical standpoint it was superior? I’m really impressed by the editing, the filming, the music. I actually texted you about this when I watched the episodes. I really liked seasons 1 and 2, but here, we’re clearly at the next level, especially since I know you were filming 18 usable minutes a day, which is huge. Did you realise that you were going to the next level?

It’s promising for seasons 5-6, which are coming soon.

A : No, season 4.

I : But you’re filming seasons 5-6 soon, right?

A : Uh... No. Not that I’m aware of. I might not be invited.

I : Oh, well, we’ll talk about it. So, for now, season 3 is filmed and season 4...

A : Season 4 is also filmed.

I : It’s also filmed.

A : But for seasons 5-6, we don’t have any news yet.

I : Yes, but it’s so successful, it would surprise me if you didn’t... you have to say it’s really successful. It’s even more successful than the first two seasons if I’m not wrong. I know you’re humble and won’t say it. I’m telling you, it’s smashing everything on the platform.

A : Yes, it’s crazy, and we’re so happy. We see people’s reactions, and we get messages in which... young people tell us it can help them, give them confidence, show them they’re not alone. An we realised, and I realised more and more while we were filming, while trying to live this story, how difficult it could be for young people today. That it was still relevant.

I : What do you mean, you realised it?

A : Because the character ends up having to lie, to hide his feelings...

I : Did you meet people, I’m thinking about all those young people from Le Refuge who are listening to us.... Did you meet young people who... Because, in your life, you’ve met people who...

A : I met people around me, I have friends who... I have a friend who came out two years ago. And to see how the way people look at you can change too, people who said they were your friends and suddenly turn their backs on you...

That’s something that’s very violent and I never had to live through. I saw it through my friends. And there, I was at the center of the story, and even if it wasn’t my life, when I got on the set, and I was Lucas and we were filming scenes where things were going badly, I realised what this could be like in real life, at least at my scale.

And I also realise how important it is. That’s why the message from the show is that, even if society gives more and more importance to assholes who think they have a right to judge other people, well, you’re not alone, and love prevails, love will win and you have to be proud of who you are.

You have a right to love a girl, to love a guy, to change, and it’s really important to say you have a right to do that, and that a love story like Lucas’ and Eliott’s is beautiful, and that’s what you should remember.

I : And have you gotten... I know we had Medhi Meskar for the show Les Engagés (french web serie about LGBT activists; it’s amazing, you should watch it) and he said he got quite a few messages from young gays from the Maghreb, I got some when I was on Clem (another tv show). Have you gotten messages... you blew up and social media recently and you deserve it, I’m really happy for you, but did you get messages from young people saying thank you?

A : A lot, yeah! And that’s what I wanted to talk to you about! We started the show, and that’s true... Maxence and I had a drink together, which ended pretty late... And we told each other the purpose of the show was to have an experience above everything else and on top of that, to help even just one young person to be able to accept themselves to realise they could and should be proud of who they are. And when we get messages like that, it feels like we’ve won everything. Because this crazy experience lasts longer, and seeing what the show’s impact on people can be is amazing.

I : What did your work on this show teach you as an actor? How did it make you grow as an actor? And did you have time to look at the technical parts? I know things go really quickly on this show, but the technique is so amazing, did you take advantage of that to see how an operator works etc?

A : So, I’m super naive about technique, to be honest. I know we used the same camera as Avatar. I mean, the same model. Beyond that, I’ll admit I don’t really know... I learned that... I mean, I learned... it went really fast, so you had to be in it right away. And I was lucky, I was in every frame of the story, so you had to be quick, go from one state to the other. It was real work, getting on set and already having all of the script in your head, what moment we were shooting, to know that if I was shooting the scene from episode 9 before the scene from episode 4, to know what had happened before the episode 4 scene even though I’d just shot episode 9. It was a lot.

I : How did you do it? Did you have a notebook?

A : I did have a notebook and post it notes each day with what had happened before, what my relationship was with each character at this point, what I was thinking when I got there etc. It was a lot of work before shooting.

Ah yes. So like, fun fact: this chapter also turned out really different from its outline. Well. Everything but the last scene turned out really different. But I have fun stuff about that and pretty much everything else so...another outline comparison?

Obviously spoilers for chapter 21 of DoJ under the cut

Back to Ochako’s pov

This should start up incredibly chaotic. The sound of screams, being bumped into from people scurrying either to or from the where the flames are congregated. Ochako’s nose is burning from the smoke, and she has to cough to even take a deeper breath in.

Details are hard lol! I tried writing down notable sensory details to get me going but it still took ages to write the first page or so. Finding ways to word the images in my head and have them come across so hectic was really hard for me 😩

There’s a question of what they should do when Deku’s phone rings. It’s Todoroki. Ochako stands close to Deku’s side to try and listen but she can barely make anything out with all the commotion going on. She almost contemplates asking for speaker but, all things considered, that obviously wouldn’t fare any better. Deku mostly just seems to be agreeing and listening until he finally says that they’ll do their best and hangs up. Todoroki said that Iida had called Aizawa immediately. They were closer to the havoc and they’re helping lead the effort to get civilians to safety and any possible need for triage. Luckily a decent number of the class was already nearby so some are fending them off and other are helping with the effort to grab civilians.

So as you can see here things............deviated. A lot. I had a really hard time actually planning out how this chapter was gonna go and I pretty much wrote up this part of the outline going “okay this is probably gonna change but these are the basics. The basics I have to get across.

So as you can see, originally I thought of having izuocha like....idk too far away? Too in shock? To jump to action. Which was, honestly, very dumb on past me’s part but they were quick to say “fuck you we’re helping” like of course.

They wanted to rush over to deal with the trees and help but I was standing there like these guys are so far away how tf is this gonna work. And that’s when it was like “omg, bridal carry.”

I think I had to break from writing after deciding that though. And I was telling my little sister about it while we were in the car. And we kind of mutually came up with the scene. We played around with the scenario a little bit, and it was originally a jokey thing. But after we talked about it, and she agreed (as a Tododeku shipper) that she thought it flowed well and made sense, I decided to include it. It was so vivid though we could both imagine as a scene in the manga so a day or two later I decided I had to commission it.

I’ll be forever grateful that @jellojolteon was up for the task and did it so so wonderfully. 💖💖💖

We also were joking around about the Momo thing and after telling @savetheirhearts-midoriya about it but saying I thought it was too goofy to include, she told me I had to include it. And who was I to refuse? Lmao

Looking back on this though idk how I thought that that it was gonna be chaos but still chill enough to be able to have a phone call smh. Luckily I’m not super strict on my outline being the end all be all lmao

I definitely like the way it turned out a lot better though. Did a good job with showing the class’s self reliance. Especially considering they’re in third year now. It shows off that they have this kind of thing down pat now. Kinda like how the Big Three came off in canon.

They decide they should try to tell other civilians where to go (maybe check how long the street usually is in Kanagawa for the festival) in the midst of that, they see Toogata and Amajiki with Eri. They explain they were with Aizawa but he felt it might be best if they go to safety with the others. They didn’t want to leave Toogata and Eri alone but Amajiki will go back into the fray once he’s guaranteed they’ve made it safely. They explain where to find Aizawa and they take off.

Maybe include a conversation with Ochako saying that, all things considered, at least this attack is happening where a handful of pros and a majority of the 3rd year hero course were out tonight. Deku wonders if that’s really much of a relief. “Was it just a coincidence or…?”

Ochako blinks in surprise, about to stew on that thought a little more when there’s a scream just up ahead. A little further ahead, there’s two girls, twins from the look of it. One is on the ground, unconscious and disheveled as well as a bloodied arm.

ooooooh right, again, more differences here. I never altered the fact that I changed the setting in my outline LOL. Mostly because I knew and it seemed pointless to change something so small when I already know lol. I wanted to include Eri a little here but when I thought about it it just felt like it would slow down the pace of the scene. And it just felt too....pushy? Idk something about it just felt off. So I decided to cut it. I also changed where Aizawa came into play but I’ll get to that in a few lol.

Second and third paragraphs though are the same. I knew I wanted to highlight the fact that is was very likely targeted.

Aizawa arrives right as they do and they ask what happened. The sister explains that they were wandering around the festival looking for her boyfriend who was further down. She started to go off ahead, but some crazy girl popped out of the alley and attacked her sister. She ran off before the twin could come back over. She tried to stem the bleeding but--

Ochako says they’ll take it from here as she goes to join the girl on the side with the bleeding arm. She says that she feels bad doing this since Inko worked so hard but she tears off some of the bottom of her yukata, to wrap the wound.

Alright so, I changed where Aizawa came in mostly because I felt like, upon, writing it, he would be coming from further into the festival than they were. And they’re up toward to front, so it only made sense to have him show up late....not to mention that he might notice that the girl (Toga) was acting a little off. So I had to limit his exposure LOL

The story was pretty much the same and, real talk, I wanted an excuse to free up Ochako’s movement since a yukata is a little limiting. But I definitely wanted to feel the ache that came with messing up something that we spent so much time waiting for. I went ahead and added some details about Toga looking a little too long before this next part just to drive home that something really doesn’t feel right about this girl...

The twin watches her, seemingly entranced, an unblinking expression on her face. “You really know what you’re doing, don’t you?”

“Oh well, I’m a hero in training!” Ochako’s a little embarrassed. “It’s all in the job.”

“We should get both of you over to triage,” Deku notes, looking toward Aizawa. This seems to snatch the other girl’s attention from Ochako’s deftly moving hands. “They can help check on her properly there.” The sister suddenly jumps to her feet, suddenly remembering her boyfriend’s further ahead and alone. She has to go find him and takes off

“Ah wait!! Eraserhead, Uraraka-san, I’ll go make sure she’ll make it okay, be right back!” He takes off too.

Pretty much the same, as far as what’s conveyed, I think. Especially highlighting that something’s wrong with this twin and that Ochako’s uncomfortable. Though, here I didn’t spell out the latter as clearly as I felt it during outlining.

Main difference is who’s saying what and--again, tbh I like how the final result came out better. Toga pretty much dips as soon as Aizawa shows up. Because 1) Aizawa’s caught her in the act before (during Overhaul arc with Rock Lock) and 2) his quirk immediately takes off hers. So she knew she had to get out ASAP once she saw who it was. I also changed Deku’s “be right back” because what the point of coming back if they’re taking the passed out one to where triage is? Dumb lol

Ochako wonders if she should maybe use her Quirk on the woman to help make it quicker for them to transport her. Aizawa says he’s not sure that’s necessary. He doesn’t want to send her or Midoriya off alone because it sounds like a lot more of the League than what they’ve actually seen. And...yeah, it’s awfully weird that they haven’t really seen a lot of them. Did they really concentrate their attack closer to the entrance? But then there’s the person who attacked this woman--

Her thought is cut off when Aizawa continues, “And if I go to take her, you won’t know when to release your Quirk. It’s probably better not to”

The first part of this is confusing--likely because originally I planned on Deku coming back but once I realized that was a little futile I had to rephrase how this was worded lol. But no matter what I didn’t want anyone to think too hard about who was doing the attacking yet (I figured people would get it by then but I still wanted to keep it low profile).

The girl between them suddenly wakes up, startled, and they assure her that they’re heroes on the scene. “It seems you were attacked and passed out from the fall or possibly received a blow to the head.”

“And you guys got rid of her?”

“No, the villain seemed to take off when your sister came over to help.”

“What? But--”

“Oh, don’t worry, she’s okay! She went to go find her boyfriend but she and our friend’ll be--”

“No, that’s.” She looks between them seemingly more dazed and confused. “I don’t have a sister.”

Aizawa says that she received a blow to the head. It’s possible that she has a concussion and she’s a little confused. “No, I’m telling you I don’t have a sister!”

��I’m an only child, and I came here alone!”

This whole exchange was more or less the same. To be honest, most of this last scene is lmao. This scene (unlike the rest of the chapter outline) was super vivid when I planned it out and whenever scenes are vivid, they almost always play out exactly the same as my outline lol

That said, chapter 22 is incredibly vivid so. Prepare yourself 👀👀👀👀👀

“But she looked just like you…” Twins. A crazy girl. She happened to be unconscious and...had a blood wound. Just like her.

She pales. No way. She doesn’t want to believe it. Not even a little. But her body moves before she can think, taking off with no heed to Aizawa calling after her.

Deku-kun!!

This was, again, near exactly the same because it was such a vivid image in the planning stage that it carried over well into actual writing. For a little bit I debated whether I should actually name drop Toga but ultimately I was like “the readers are smart, I don’t have to hold their hand about it!” So I trusted yall to put two and two together lol

But yeah, that about sums it up!! The notorious scene actually only happened because of Izuocha wanting to help and me and my Tododeku shipper sister sitting in the car in the BK drive thru if I’m not mistaken lmfao

The Top 25 Teams of the Decade: #6 Florida State

Hello everybody, we’re celebrating the arrival of the 2020′s by looking at the 25 best programs of the previous decade.

We’re on to the top ten to celebrate the #6 team from the 2010′s:

Record: 96-37 (.722) Division Titles: 4 Conference Titles: 3 Bowl Seasons: 9 Major Bowls: 5 Playoff/BCS Berths: 2 Final Top 25 Finishes: 7 Final Top 10 Finishes: 4 Final Top 5 Finishes: 2 National Championships: 1 Best Season: 2013

Florida State just misses the top five. Given the way the Seminoles ended the decade, this comes as no surprise. The rest of the top 5 combined only produced a single losing season. That FSU made it so high is also a testament to how good the team was for portions of the 2010′s. The Noles spent most of the 2000′s asleep at the wheel as Bobby Bowden remained in charge but was unable to duplicate his past success that made Florida State one of the premier teams of the 1980′s and 1990′s. Bowden finally retired at the conclusion of the 2009 season, allowing Jimbo Fisher free reign to recreate the program in the 2010′s.

The Seminoles began the decade with tempered expectations. FSU entered 2010 ranked 20th in the AP poll, which was pretty reasonable for an underperforming blue blood. The Noles were blown out 17-47 by #10 Oklahoma in week 2 which dropped them out of the polls. Florida State was a pretty good team, just not good enough yet to hang with the big boys. The Seminoles rebounded with a nice five game win streak, including a huge 45-17 upset over #13 Miami. Beating an overrated Hurricanes squad would become a calling card for the Jimbo Fisher era. After climbing back to 16th in the polls, 6-1 FSU suffered back to back losses to NC State and North Carolina to tumble right back out. It was a setback to be sure, but the Atlantic wasn’t quite the division it would become in a few years when both the Noles and Clemson really put things together. Florida State won out with wins over the Tigers and Maryland, then jumped all over Florida, finally beating Urban Meyer 31-7 as he was on his way out the door in Gainesville. By virtue of their 6-2 conference record, the 9-3 Seminoles represented the Atlantic Division in the ACC Championship Game. #20 FSU faced off against #12 Virginia Tech, who lost their first two games then rallied to win out for the rest of the season. The Hokies won the scoring race 44-33, denying the Noles their shot at an Orange Bowl. The Noles were relegated to the Chick-fil-A Bowl, where they beat #19 South Carolina 26-17. Florida State ended their first year under Fisher with a 10-4 record, a division title, and a final #17 ranking. It wasn’t ideal, but it was a step towards greater things.

With 2010′s team showing a lot of promise, expectations dramatically rose in Tallahassee for the 2011 season. The Seminoles began the year ranked 6th in the AP poll, and won their first two games against cupcake opponents. However, FSU hit a wall in mid-September. Losing to #1 Oklahoma by 10 points at home could be forgiven, but then following that loss up with defeats to #21 Clemson and unranked Wake Forest were not quite so forgivable. The Noles tumbled from the top five out of the rankings in three weeks, a feat that we’re lucky to see every few seasons only when an overrated team gets exposed very quickly early on in the year. Thankfully, the Atlantic really didn’t boast too many threats and Florida State was able to salvage the situation with another timely five game win streak which included the obligatory win over Miami. The Seminoles finally found themselves ranked for the first time since the loss to Wake, and they promptly lost to Virginia. 2011 was one of those years. FSU was able to beat Florida by two touchdowns for the second straight year, which is a great way to end the regular season even if the Noles didn’t win their division. 8-4 Florida State beat Notre Dame 18-14 in the Citrus Bowl to once again end the year ranked, albeit 23rd in the country.

2012 was when Fisher’s turnaround really began to take hold. Expectations were again high thanks to the strong recruiting of the previous few years. The Seminoles began the season ranked 7th in the AP poll, a pretty nice vote of confidence that this time bore fruit. FSU bloodied up a couple of nobodies before the now #4 Noles hosted defending conference champions #10 Clemson. It was the first of five epic showdowns between the two that would decide the ACC Champion every year. Florida State outpaced the Tigers 49-37 to vault themselves into serious national title consideration. However, as the calendar changed to October, the Seminoles suffered a serious setback. #3 FSU was upset by unranked NC State 16-17. It more or less crippled their national title aspirations in an especially competitive season among the BCS conferences. The Noles made quick work through the rest of their conference schedule, and were granted the Atlantic’s berth to the ACC Championship Game by virtue of their tiebreaking win over Clemson. #10 Florida State hosted a resurgent #6 Florida, but ended up losing to their rivals 26-37, ending the regular season on a sour note. The ACC Championship Game was probably a bit more interesting than it should have been. The Seminoles only ended up beating unranked Georgia Tech 21-15, but hey, that’s a ticket to the Orange Bowl all the same. #13 FSU was matched up against #16 Northern Illinois and the Noles easily dispatched the overmatched Huskies 31-10. Florida State’s 11-2 record and #10 final ranking was their best finish since 2000. The Seminoles were still trending up.

FSU put all the pieces together in 2013. Redshirt freshman QB Jameis Winston led one of the most talented teams of the BCS era onto the field in the last season of the Bowl Championship Series. The Noles blew through all of their competition, outscoring opponents 205-60 in September, with more than half of those points surrendered coming against a Boston College team that Florida State still beat by two touchdowns in Chestnut Hill. The Seminoles beat #25 Maryland 63-0 in the last game they’d ever play against the Terrapins, who were about to move to the Big Ten. Two weeks later, #5 FSU squared off against #3 Clemson in another titanic battle for the Atlantic, at least, it was supposed to be a battle. The Noles dismantled the Tigers 51-14 at Clemson, making no mistake in showing the nation who was in charge of the ACC. Florida State then dismantled NC State and #7 Miami en route to another Atlantic Division title. The now #2 Seminoles ended their undefeated regular season by crushing Florida 37-7 in Gainesville. FSU was now the only undefeated team in the BCS left standing, and cemented their place in the championship game with a 45-7 cakewalk in the ACC Championship Game against #20 Duke. The last ever BCS Championship Game was one of the more entertaining in the 15 year history of the contest. The #1 Noles pulled ahead of #2 Auburn to secure a 34-31 win. It was Florida State’s first national championship since 1999 and third in program history.

2014 was an interesting year. The Seminoles lost an insane amount of talent to the draft, but remained the best team in the ACC regardless (if you ignore the computers). As the defending champions, with Heisman winning QB Jameis Winston still guiding the offense, FSU was well positioned to be the first repeat national champions since, well, Alabama two years earlier. The #1 Noles began the year with a 37-31 win over Oklahoma State in the Cowboys Classic in Arlington. It wasn’t the most impressive win, but it got the job done. That was pretty much the motto for Florida State in 2014. The team that blew away all comers in 2013 transformed into a squad that still got the job done but just barely in 2014. The defending champs were taken to overtime by #22 Clemson but pulled out the 23-17 win. In mid-October, the Seminoles beat #5 Notre Dame 31-27. By this time, FSU had already been relegated to #2 in the AP poll despite not losing a game. That’s pretty extreme for a defending champion but Mississippi State of all teams looked that much better. The Noles managed to scrape their way to 12-0 for a second consecutive year despite almost losing to Miami, Boston College, and Florida to end the regular season. Florida State was pitted against #12 Georgia Tech in the ACC Championship Game. The Seminoles again came away with the victory in the 37-35 contest. Despite their overall competence and sterling 13-0 record, FSU was ranked a 3rd seed by the first College Football Playoff committee. The doubters were proven right. Any lack of competence can be masked over in the ACC in the regular season, but not in the Playoff against top flight competition. The #3 Noles were completely humiliated in the Rose Bowl by #2 Oregon. The Ducks dominated every aspect of the game in a 59-20 blowout. That Oregon didn’t even end up winning the national championship was another blow to the idea that Florida State was actually one of the best teams in the 2014 season. They got by thanks to a whole lot of luck. It’s a weird way to go 13-1.

After the craziness of the 2013 and 2014 seasons, it’s easy to forget the 2015 and 2016 Seminoles teams. They were both still very good, albeit not the world beaters we saw in Jameis’s first season. The vaunted QB was now in the NFL, and FSU was left to plod along without him. They did a pretty good job. The Noles started the 2015 season 6-0. Outside of the scrub games at the beginning of the year, they didn’t look particularly commanding, and never rose past 9th in the rankings despite starting the year 10th in the nation. Florida State suffered their first loss at the hands of a horrible Georgia Tech squad that would finish the year 3-9. It pretty much ended the national title hunt without needing a second loss to fully shut the door. Of course, Clemson shut that door anyway with a 23-13 win at home. The Tigers were now on their way to commanding the ACC Atlantic the way the Seminoles had done for the previous several seasons. #14 FSU ended the regular season with a showdown against #10 Florida. It should have been one of the most exciting games of rivalry week, but the Noles walked all over their rivals with a 27-2 smothering of the Gators. 10-2 Florida State was selected to the Peach Bowl as an at-large entrant. The #9 Seminoles faced off against #14 Houston, the G5 representative in the NY6 Bowls for that year. FSU was upset by the upstart Cougars, and finished the year outside of the top ten for the first time since 2012.

The Noles were again one of the best teams in the nation in 2016, but they were growing inconsistent. Expectations were high, Florida State began the year ranked 4th in the country. The Seminoles began the year with a 45-34 win over #11 Ole Miss in Orlando, a solid beginning to the season. However, just two weeks later, #2 FSU was absolutely blown out by #10 Louisville 20-63. The Noles had never surrendered 60 points in program history. Two weeks later, Florida State lost at home to North Carolina on a last second field goal. I’m kind of surprised that the Seminoles didn’t fall totally out of the rankings at this point, but Louisville was having one of its best seasons ever and UNC was 4-1 at the time. But, just when they needed it the most, Miami showed up, and FSU still hadn’t lost to the Hurricanes since Jimbo Fisher took over. The #23 Noles scraped past #10 Miami 20-19 to halt the skid. At the end of October, #12 Florida State played host to undefeated #3 Clemson. In a back and forth battle, the Tigers pulled out 37-34 win despite the best efforts of Dalvin Cook, who was now firmly established as one of the best running backs in the country. If you can call a loss a momentum-builder, then the Seminoles turned the momentum of nearly beating the eventual national champions into a nice little win streak to end the year. FSU defeated their last three ACC opponents and then once again made short work of the SEC East champs with a 31-13 victory over #13 Florida. The 9-3 Noles were selected to their fifth consecutive New Year’s Bowl. #10 Florida State would represent the ACC in the absence of undefeated Clemson, who were in Playoff. The Seminoles battled with #6 Michigan to a 33-32 victory. The Wolverines had very nearly made the Playoff themselves.

Things were looking up at the beginning of 2017. FSU began the year ranked 3rd in the country on the back of their strong finish to the previous season. In one of the most anticipated Kickoff Games in years, the Noles went up against #1 Alabama. Florida State held their own against the fearsome Tide, the biggest difference maker being the 3 turnovers given to Bama. QB Deondre Francois ruptured his patellar tendon, ending his season with 6 minutes left in the 4th Quarter of a 7-24 loss to the eventual champions. And that’s just about when the season ended as far as many fans are concerned. With the QB position compromised, other problems began manifesting across the board. Florida State lost to 0-1 NC State in their next game, falling from #3 to unranked in two games which is basically unheard of in college football. The Seminoles rebounded with a win over Wake Forest to stop the bleeding somewhat. #13 Miami came to town for a win FSU needed desperately. The Noles hadn’t lost to the Hurricanes all decade and a win would hopefully salvage a bad start. Well, it didn’t happen. Miami left Tallahassee with a 24-20 victory and suddenly things really started to fall apart. A touchdown win over Duke was offset by a three point home loss to Louisville. Florida State hit rock bottom the next week, getting absolutely run off the field by Boston College of all teams. The Eagles beat the Seminoles 35-3 and suddenly Jimbo Fisher was coaching for his job. #4 Clemson naturally won, this time the game meant nothing in the ACC Atlantic race. Fisher, who was finding his situation increasingly untenable, left to coach Texas A&M before the end of the season. FSU still beat a Randy Shannon-led Florida because the Gators also managed to collapse the same year (lol) and the Noles were able to skate into bowl season with a 6-6 record. Florida State beat up on Southern Miss in the Independence Bowl, but that was cold comfort for a program that had completely imploded in the span of three months.

Not many teams are put in this situation. Jimbo Fisher elegantly reinvigorated a flagging--but by no means bad--program when he took over the reigns in 2010. When Willie Taggart was brought in to replace Fisher, the situation was dire. Obscured behind all the winning from 2014 to 2016, the program was somehow falling apart on the inside. Perhaps Fisher was aware of the damage and was eager to leave, either way Taggart was dealt a horrible hand. The offensive line was under-recruited to the point that a stiff breeze could knock them over. The Seminoles were so deficient on the offensive side of the ball that they didn’t have the ability to compete with teams they couldn’t roll right over. I mean, how does that even happen at a blue blood school? FSU began the year ranked 19th in the country because how bad can they really be? Well, after losing to 24-3 to #20 Virginia Tech, that was the last the AP poll has had anything to do with the Noles. Florida State was crushed by Syracuse, Clemson, NC State, Notre Dame, and Florida. One of the few close games the Noles played in all year was a gutting 27-28 loss to Miami, which made things all the worse when their end of season record was 5-7. Florida State managed to beat #22 Boston College, but that team really didn’t deserve to be ranked and finished the year 7-5. It was just a mess of a season from start to finish. It still boggles my mind thinking about how a program can fall off this quickly.

2019 saw a slight improvement to the team as the offensive line started to slowly stop being completely terrible. The Seminoles beat every bad team they faced, of which there were plenty in the ACC in 2019, but they also lost to every good team they came up against. That evened out to a 6-6 record after everything was said, but getting back to the postseason wasn’t good enough. Willie Taggart was fired after FSU turned in a miserable performance against Miami for the third season straight, this time a 10-27 loss, the worst of the decade against the Canes. Taggart was slowly turning things around, but ultimately he over promised how fast the team would rebound and under-delivered considering just how bad the ACC was outside of Clemson. I seriously think he’d still be there if the Noles didn’t lose to Virginia early in the year. Nobody knew the Cavaliers would be any good. Oh well, either way, Odell Haggins was tabbed with cleaning up the mess for the second time in three years. Florida State lost to Arizona State in the Sun Bowl. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I have no idea what’s in store for the Seminoles in the 2020′s. It all depends on what new head coach Mike Norvell can get done. FSU is still a blue blood, and in the ACC Atlantic they can probably get better faster than many other teams in other conferences.

It may be a bit strange seeing a team that so publicly flamed out in the past few years so high on the list. That really speaks to everything the Noles were able to accomplish from 2010 to 2016. They stuffed a decade’s worth of accolades into six or seven years.

One thing Florida State can hang their hat on is that they were the most dominant team in the state in the 2010′s. The Seminoles hold 7-3 records against both rival Florida and Miami in the span. For what it’s worth, FSU went 4-6 against Clemson as well, and most people would probably say that the Tigers were the second best team this past decade. Not a bad showing all things considered.

Hi, my name's Maddy, I use she/her pronouns, and I'm the current president of gulgbtq+! I'm a third year medical student and I was the previous welfare officer. I spend most of my time hanging out with my rat, hiding in the library, and doing things with gulgbtq+. I’ve been part of the society over the last year, and it’s been one of the best parts of my university experience. I’ve made new friends, increased my self-confidence, and had tons of good gay times! Outside of the society, I enjoy going to gigs, caring for my many houseplants, and taking too many naps. I’m excited for my role on committee this year, although you know what they say about gays and maths! Hello! My name is Bianca and I'm the Welfare Officer of GULGBTQ+. I'm a small twenty-year-old Italian and I am a third year English Language & Linguistics and Theatre Studies student. I spend most of my free time reading, crying over Shakespeare, or bingeing the latest gay shows on Netflix, and the rare times I decide to go outside and try sports I enjoy horse riding and ice skating. Hey, I'm Cassidy (they/them) the new Trans officer! I'm 20 and a third year studying Classics and History. I'm a nonbinary trans woman and I'm here to represent trans people and help people with gender related things generally 🙂

Aside from being gender, I am a roller skating gamer who makes stuffed toys and loves history more than life itself. I'm looking forward to running coffee and having a great year with everyone 🙂

Hey, hi, hello! I’m Kyle, a postgraduate Astrophysics student who’ll be your first PostMat Officer for this year! Avid Karaoke Fan and Polo R&B Room Resident, I’ll usually be found out and about when I’m not studying (procrastinating). My aim for the time that I’m here is to try and get more LGBTQ+ Postgraduate and Mature students involved with GULGBTQ+.

I haven’t been in Glasgow for very long, so I’m excited to share the experience of things like Glasgow Pride with you all! I’m also hoping to run some smaller gatherings (like the current PostMat Coffees) over the summer for those of us who will need a break from our dissertations. If any PostMat students have ideas to share or any concerns to raise, please don’t be afraid to email.

10. Campaigns: Jo, They/He, [email protected]

Hi, I’m Jo and I’m your Campaigns Officer! I’m a postgraduate research student in English Language & Linguistics with a particular love for all things to do with LGBTQ+ linguistics. I’m a big fan of knitting, baking, indoor bouldering and playing D&D, and I’m also involved with the English Language & Linguistics Society. I was Campaigns Officer the year before last in 2017/2018, but I just couldn’t stay away, and now I’m back for some more campaigning!

As Campaigns Officer, my role is to raise awareness of LGBTQ+ issues in the society, on campus, and in the wider world. In the past, I’ve helped run campaigns to increase awareness of trans people on campus and to encourage local hairdressers and barbers to be inclusive of their LGBTQ+ customers. This year, I hope to revitalise these campaigns and work with our other officers and members of the society to create some exciting new ones!

Hi, I’m Summer and I’m the Communications and Technology Officer for the year! I’m a 5th year computing science student (yes, that kind of transfem!) so you’ll frequently find me programming, tinkering with Linux or providing tech support for someone. When I’m not doing that I’ll probably be knitting, playing video games, running tabletop rpgs or watching martial arts movies (or talking about how I don't have time for any of the above)!

As the recently renamed Communications and Technology officer (formerly Publicity) I'm mostly here for you to tell me why the website or mailing list doesn't work, so feel free to get in touch with any complaints and/or constructive criticisms. I hope to have a great year with you all, hopefully with a better website!

Hiya! I’m Jenny and I’m the interim first year representative on the GULGBTQ+ committee. I’m going into second year studying biomedical engineering and in my free time I enjoy drawing, making soup, and loving my gf. I met wonderful friends and made loads of good gay memories through the society in my first year and am excited to help as many freshers as possible join in on the fun this year! I’m passionate about creating a loving and accepting community for all LGBTQ+ students, especially new ones, since I know how hard it can be to settle in. Hi I'm Niamh, you may recognise me as last year's nonbinary officer! I use they/them pronouns, I'm 20 and a 3rd year psychology student. I’m Judith, I’ve been described as “the lesbianest person I know” by my flatmate and if you ask me where I’m from, I’m likely to name three countries, so I guess it makes sense that I’d be your international officer. I’m a third year psychology and statistics student who likes to avoid studying by going swordfighting (yes, I own an actual sword, but don’t worry, I only use it against transphobes) or putting on facepaint before a metal gig. But don’t get the wrong impression, I’m actually a very quiet person who’s always there to listen or give you advice. Hello! I’m Leilo (they/them), 20, and happy to be the ace/aro officer! My job is to represent people who are (or are questioning if they are) on the spectrums of being aromantic or asexual, so feel free to email me! As ace/aro officer I host biweekly coffees so aros, aces, and those who are questioning, can come together.

I’m a second year Maths student but will probably add philosophy as my second main subject. Aside from sitting over Math problems for way longer than seems necessary, you will find me writing, working out, or philosophising about bdsm.

Converse High Analysis

this is the analysis for their 3rd mini album, 화양연화 pt. 1, 7th track - Converse High

i will be analysing several components - music, lyrics and choreography

disclaimer: this is just my personal opinion, feel free to disagree. do let me know your thoughts in my ask box

overall: this fun youthful track is produced by namjoon in which he wanted to put in his mixtape initially but instead decided to put inside this album instead to become a group song. not to mention, he even purposely named it ‘converse high’ in which he mentioned in an interview before that his ideal girl in 2015 was one who owned a pair of red high tops converse sneakers which led to the name of the song.

music: it starts off straight away with the use of cymbals inside, specifically the hi-hats and the use of electrical guitar chords that sound more reggae and hippie in the beginning. namjoon also comes in with an adlib of ‘yeah’ as if to feel the groove of the song and to set the mood. actually throughout the first few seconds of the song, namjoon is using it to his advantage to ride the groove etc and only till 0:10 does he begin the song, but he starts it off softly so as to prepare for the impending drop. not to mention that one could hear jungkook doubling inside towards the end of namjoon’s lyrics and that the beat now includes claps inside in time with the hi-hats. then namjoon wraps up the intro with ‘converse high’, intentionally slowing down so that the drop would have more impact as listeners would listen out to it more.

so jungkook comes in at 0:19 with that sweet voice of his to which at the beginning one could hear this ‘shimmering synth’ as now the percussion and guitar chords are dimmed down to amplify jungkook’s vocals. the key part of this song is ‘woah woah woah’ at 0:28 in which it is constantly repeated throughout this song, giving it its own groove.

jimin then comes in at 0:29 at the second part of the chorus and again at 0:37 with the ‘woah woah woah’. one could notice that the chorus is actually more choppy - in a way, several breaths are being taken to sing the chorus as they time their singing with the beat and also to sustain the ‘woah woah woah’. to be honest, almost all of the vocal line members’ make it obvious that they are taking breaths especially seokjin however jungkook is the one that makes it less obvious that he does so.

and the after this chorus, there is this short piece of drum melody that signals the start of the verses - actually namjoon’s rap and he’s taking it more chill together with the claps of the beat ( the hi-hats and guitar chords are already dimmed down in this verse ). what’s interesting is that at 0:49 with his lyrics ‘f u’, it adds on to his style of rapping here, clearly showing he could manipulate the beat of the song. yet, he repeats the ‘f u’ several times as he makes a statement.

and then at 0:59, namjoon’s part abruptly ends but is quickly overcome with hoseok’s part as he takes the next verse, as the beat accelerates and picks up speed. the claps actually occur every crotchet and it appears to have ‘speed up’ the song because of it occurring every beat but again, i feel that this is just an ‘audio illusion’, the speed didn’t change, it just sounds faster because of how many more beats there are in a bar. hoseok, too, also knows how to play along, easily integrating his laughter at 1:16 as part of the song.

then at 1:18 with that shimmering synth, taehyung takes over the prechorus and instead of claps, what one could hear are the snaps, the snapping of the fingers to be precise but of course synthesized to make it sound more electronic. in this prechorus, one could hear the adlibs of jungkook and jimin inside as they make up for the loss of percussion inside and guitar chords. and at 1:25, that nice vocal riff by jimin and possibly jungkook as it moves on to the second part of the prechorus which is done by jimin at 1:28. then there is that one synth that signals jimin’s entrance. only during this part did the hi-hats actually come back to play together with that descending synth. again there are some adlibs being done here but subtly done as it is only the middle of the song and not towards the end.

and one could hear yoongi’s ‘ack’ at 1:38 before it makes way for the chorus to start at 1:39 with jungkook and to be honest, there is the percussion that’s in time with the words that adds on to the ‘choppy’ feeling that one could hear. seokjin takes over at the chorus at 1:48 to wrap it up with the drum melody at 1:57 to signal the repeated part of the chorus which actually has a lot of jungkook’s adlibs inside, though very subtle, sounding more like riffs.

at 2:07 it’s yoongi’s part coming through and for some reason, the song sounds as if it picked up speed again because the claps are back again but in quarters, constantly keeping yoongi’s rap in check. not to mention the use of hi-hats are back in again. yoongi’s small adlib of ‘ah yeah’ at 2:14 as well just to fill in the small gap in between. i like how his voice kinda got dragged down at 2:18 as he said ‘numbers’, something called like text painting where his voice goes down in time with the beat also going down - descending for that matter. but that brief pause ends when he comes back in full speed at 2:19 but he seems to be squeezing more words in a bar in this second part of his rap. and he even dragged his last word to tie in to the prechorus at 2:27 with jungkook.

again, nothing much has changed in the prechorus except that jungkook and seokjin are the ones singing this time round. one could hear yoongi’s adlib again at 2:47 before the beat drops for the final time.

one could tell that this is the last chorus with the number of adlibs being done in this chorus specifically by jungkook such as in 2:49 and then at 2:58 where taehyung takes over, one could hear jungkook harmonizing with him. jungkook’s adlibs could be heard again at 2:59 and at 3:01.

that short drum melody is used again as the go for the coda at 3:05 and jungkook’s adlibs again at 3:08, 3:13 and even hoseok contributing by saying ‘ah yeah’ at 3:17 and that nice melodic riff by jungkook at 3:21 and then at 3:23, hoseok’s giggle that just added more to the youth theme. and then one could hear that drum rhythm at 3:25 before namjoon ends off with ‘converse high’

lyrics: the lyrics here are more laid-back, maybe because the song is called ‘Converse High’ and are singing some praises about the brand ( but then again, who doesn't own a pair

also namjoon did mention before in 2015 in an interview that his ideal girl would actually wear a pair of red high tops converse shoes and is seen here in the lyrics in his rap

note: it is not common for people in Korea to actually say the brand or name of a product hence which is why when bangtan performed this song on Mnet Countdown, they changed it to ‘Lover’s High’ to be in check with the broadcasting rules

so yoongi’s rap lyrics are actually funny to me, because he is going against the general idea of a girl wearing converse shoes being attractive, here he states, he rather have them wear jordan sneakers instead of those converse shoes and that they are even harder to take off ( is this suggestive hmmMM ) especially since converse shoes are laced up unlike high heels which could easily slip off

i feel that this song, for some reason, is very appropriate, maybe because of the fact that most youth, whether they own a pair of converse shoes, are very familiar with this brand, especially in Korea. i feel that the moment you own a pair of shoes with laces, you have reached that period of youth - which technically overreaches this whole concept of their album - youth.

choreography: the choreography for this one is laid-back, possibly the same level as Boyz with Fun choreography ( which you could see here )

that cute footwork in the beginning, of course. for some reason they all look like boys who see their crush ( or maybe thats what they were going for )

and when the chorus hits, here they are dragging their feet, honestly i think the main point of this whole dance is to literally exaggerate their footwork, possibly because the song title is Converse High.

i dont know, i just really thought that this whole dance was cute??

this part when hoseok comes in, well let’s all admire the formation, all i can just say that this whole dance focuses more on their footwork, highlighting those parts which then become the main point of the dance etc

last thoughts: regardless, i think this is still a fun song, not a hype for sure, but one that could still lift the mood

DWTS S25 Premiere Week 1 Recap / Review

DWTS S25 Week 1...Here we go..Here we go again

Three Musketeers: Carrie Ann, Len & Bruno are back. You know as much as I love Julianne as a judge & I really do, as well as some guest judges, it’s nothing like the seeing the 3 original still kicking after 25 seasons.

Only one judge speaking per couple, ehhh right. lol

Next Week: 2 Eliminations & 2 Dances. Monday: Ballroom Night & Tuesday: Latin Night

1.Terrell Owens & Cheryl Burke - Cha Cha (5+5+5=15)

Cheryl was the secret 13th pro, no real surprise, she’s been away for a bit, but they almost always come back (looking at you too Mark Ballas). I’m just gonna put it out there, I’m not the biggest Terrell Owens fan but I won’t let it cloud my judgement of his dancing. I actually think he could do well, DWTS loooves a tall, dark, football player with twinkly toes.. Cheryl is a good pick for him. This was a nice, standard cha-cha for a premiere nothing too exciting, he’s got rhythm & musicality. His footwork was a lot cleaner than expected, obviously could be sharper among other things. He’s kind of flat-footed, but he has the work-hard mentality that could see him trend up mid-season.

2. Debbie Gibson & Alan Bersten - Foxtrot (6+5+6=17) I’m familiar with Debbie’s long career but knowing she struggles with Lyme disease & his pushing herself to the max for this show gives me a whole a new respect for her. Alan has been busting his butt in the troupe & as a stand-in for some seasons so it’s nice to see him get a chance to show his stuff as a pro. Beautiful foxtrot to debut with, her & Alan are cute together. Debbie is very striking on the floor, there are times when she was right on it & then a little stiff and weal posture at times. I can sense a breakthrough coming. 3.Sasha Pieterse & Gleb Savchenko - Cha Cha (6+6+6=18) I have never watched Pretty Little Liars so she’s a virtual stranger to me but I predict she’ll be around for some weeks with the PLL fan-base. She seems to have fun personality. Gleb is not my favorite, he has yet to truly impress me. I think Sasha was holding back her Fierce (prepare for season long Sasha Fierce puns, it’s happening...).She seems to be comfortable out there but hopefully she’ll really let loose sooner than later. There’s a lot more there. Best footwork so far, I just wished they used more of the floor...

4. Drew Scott & Emma Slater - Foxtrot (6+5+5=16) I’m one of the 10 people that don’t watch HGTV, but I do know who the Property Brothers but I don’t have an opinion on them, except Drew is the more attractive one, don’t @ me. What I do know is Drew got lucky getting paired with reigning champ & DWTS sweetheart Emma. Their popularity should take them far. Easily my favorite choreography of the night so far, it was charming,, on the nose, but pretty jam packed, she made him work more than any other celeb so far. Len is right, that he’s pretty clunky with his feet & hands, hopefully that can be sorted over time. I can’t be too hard on him he had more to do than a lot of celebs.

5. Barbra Corcoran & Keo Motespe - Cha Cha (5+4+5=14) I’m probably the biggest Shark Tank fan that exist, don’t ask why I just am. So I’m super jacked to see Barabra she’s one of the best and most entertaining sharks. I hope she doesn’t get cut too soon. What can I say about this dance, except I loved every minute of it. I love seeing people live their best life, especially people of a certain age. You got money, power, respect & fame, why not live as much as you can , what’t there to lose? Barbara totally embodies that. This dance definitely had Patti Labelle “In Da Club” vibes. Of course she can greatly improve& I hope she does, but most importantly I hope she continues to have as much fun as possible.

6. Jordan Fisher & Lindsay Arnold - Tango (8+7+7=22) I’m not a jet setting millionaire so I never saw Hamilton, so I’m not familiar but he’s with Lindsay & that’s enough for me pay attention to him. They seem poised to go really far. He’s charming, cute & has a lot of promise. This tango was fast as we’ve come to like on this show, and pretty sharp. Best footwork, choreography & partnering so far.

7. Nick Lachey & Peta Murgatoryd - Cha Cha (6+6+6=18) Obviously, Nick’s brother Drew won Season 2 with Cheryl but who cares anymore, that was back when the show was less flashy & looked like it was shot on VHS. I’m not really in the mood to hear about this “rivalry” all season. Because, we unfortunately have to focus on Nick vs his wife Vanessa with Maks this season. I was over the competing couples when Alexa Vega & Carlos Pena were on & I’m over it now. It is cute they’re respectively paired with married couple Peta & Maks. Nick is not the most rhythmic celeb, with ironic because Peta is one of the more rhythmic pro’s. He’s stiff but what he lacks in technique, he makes up for in enthusiasm. I’m sensing Vanessa might be the better dancer of the two, at least I’m hoping.

8. Vanessa Lachey & Maksim Chmerkovskiy - Cha Cha (7+7+7=21) I gotta say marriage & fatherhood looks great on Maks. I’m glad my prediction was right, Vanessa is better than Nick. She’s actually really good, one of the best of the night. Maks’ sharp footwork suited her well. Her placement is clean, swift & sharp. One of the most synced partnerships tonight, I want to see her go far.

9. Frankie Muniz & Witney Carson - Foxtrot (7+6+6=19) I haven’t heard much about Frankie since early 2000′s except his car crash some years back but he looks healthy, happy & wealthy (those Malcom in the Middle checks had to be nice). They really benefited from a great, emotional song (Sign of The Times). For someone who once broke his back you couldn’t tell, his extension was really good. To be so shy, Frankie dances very broad, he’s got a great early connection with Witney. Definitely a highlight of the night.

10. Nikki Bella & Artem Chigventsev - Tango (7+7+6=20) Nikki is about the only name I recognize from the WWE Diva’s. It’ll be interesting to see if she can reign in her dominance to let Artem lead her. Len is absolutely right, her looking down almost ruined the dance, I thought she was uncomfortable at first then I realized she was just watching her feet. When she was in hold it was great, her legs are super long which make for great lines. She’s got great confidence & attack, can Artem contain it?

11. Derek Fisher & Sharna Burgess - Salsa (6+6+6=18) Derek is Laker legend, I’m excited he’s paired with Sharna who plays no games. NBA players need redemption on this show, Derek might be the guy to do it. His hips & footwork will need work, I think he needs to loosen up more, but he’s super enthusiastic about the whole experience. That ending was super close, Sharna almost ate it..

12. Victoria Arlen & Val Chmerkovksiy - Cha Cha (7+6+6=19) Victoria’s story is remarkable being paralyzed for 10 years, competing in the Paralympics, winning Gold & Silver & learning to walk a year ago & now DWTS & she can’t even feel her legs. Like what are you doing with your life right now? Victoria has a winner’s spirit, she’s incredibly resilient and partner with Val that can take her a super long way. Plus she can actualy dance, there’s no sympathy card in this pairing, Val gave her some challenging choreograph, not just for her situation. The routine was fun, uplifting & matched her spirit and personality. The fact that she can’t feel her legs just blows my mind when watching her dance and sync with Val. The placement was great & clean. These two are ones to watch, she’s got a great story, she’s got Val & she’s got moves.

13. Lindsey Sterling & Mark Ballas - (7+8+8=22) Lindsey is an incredible violinist who is no stranger to the DWTS stage, having guest performed & she’s also close friends with the Hough / Ballas family already, so this seemed like a natural pairing all around. Obviously great to have Mark and his hair back on the show, he’s a personal favorite with Val. This was by far the single best performance of the night. Quick, sharp & technically sound. Mark took a risk with that hip-hop breakdown but Lindsey murdered it. It was complete flip on what you expected from her as Len noted, something Mark is good for. She’s such a natural and exuberant performer & Mark is such a seasoned pro, it’s a match made in heaven. Honestly, I believe Mark has been robbed many times (Chelsea Kane, Katherine Jenkins, Paige Vanzant) it would be nice to see him win his so long overdue 3rd mirrorball trophy & Lindsey might just be the partner to get it done. Tied for the top with Jordan & Lindsay

To be honest I can’t not foresee their deathflags---seriously, this is too much. But I do wonder where Beyazid goes to, and why both him and Ismail kept mentioning about times. If one read this chapter, they probably mean about Mur’s attack. But then, I translated chapter 102 first, and Ismail asking Beyazid whether he chose him as the commander is because of the time or not, which Beyazid replied not. So I don’t know what they actually mean. Hopefully it’s truly about them stalling time for Mur’s troops and Mahmut’s return to Altin ;; v ;;

Going back to deathflag matter, I think as we all thinking about, the one who most likely death is Ismail WHICH I CAN’T ACCEPT WHY ARE YOU DOING THIS :(, considering him being given sudden lot screentimes-----he did but didn’t as much as Beyazid, Orhan and Ayse especially in Civil War Arc (like his only appearance in the arc is just to take his father’s position, so unimportant) and even giving him the commander role... Just when I taking a like to his character ;; ^ ;; But it doesn’t mean the others aren’t as high as him.

Oh, why almost every my favorite characters given so much deathflags by their authors---------------------------------------------

Tenimyu Challenge!

Tenimyu 30-day Challenge

1. How did you first come across TeniMyu?

It was back in late 2010/early 2011. I had just learned about the wonder that is tenipuri character songs and was browsing YouTube for more tenipuri material when I stumbled across a video of 1st season’s Do Your Best. I found it odd, to say the least, but the songs were very catchy and I recognized Shirotan from clips of the live action tenipuri movie so it got me curious. That led to more tenimyu videos, including clips from Imperial Match Hyoutei, Dream Live 3rd, and by the time I found a clip of the Rikkai’s medley on Dream Live 7th, I was completely hooked. (Massu is the PERFECT GODLY BAD ASS YUKIMURA.)

2. Talk about a performance/show that gave you a lot of feelings.

Oretachi no Aikotoba from Dream Live 6th. My precious 4th cast babies were all crying, some even admitted in their speeches that they didn’t want to stop playing their characters and leave tenimyu. how can I not cry

3. Favorite Seigaku cast? Who’s your favorite member?

I’M TORN BETWEEN 6TH CAST AND 8TH CAST. BUT.

I LOVE YOU, ZAIKI TAKUMA

4. What kinds of TeniMyu merchandise do you have?

So far I only have clear files of Seigaku 6th cast and Rokkaku from 2nd season’s Seigaku VS Rikkai. Looking to get my hands on that Seigaku VS Rikkai DVD soon mhmm

5. Favorite Shitenhoji cast member? Which cast do you prefer and why?

Shiraishi actors are all perfect

6. Which TeniMyu song would you cover?

I’m pretty sure I don’t have the vocal range to sing it correctly, but I’d love to sing Yudan Sezu ni Ikou in karaoke.

7. Shuffle your TeniMyu songs on your iTunes/music player. Choose the first five. What’s your opinion on them?

At the moment I only have 2nd season’s Seigaku VS Hyoutei, Seigaku VS Rikkai, and 3rd season’s Seigaku VS Hyoutei

Ranking (3rd SvH) - I don’t really like how it sounds like a hiphop song?? I tend to skip it when I’m listening to this playlist.

Oretachi wa Blizzard - I love this so much, especially Miura’s solo part. It’s such a catchy song.

Samurai - This one’s kinda meh, I’m not really that into it

Mirai e - I don’t know how to express my love for this grad song in words. It’s just. perfect.

Tomorrow for You & I (2nd SvH) - MY TEARS. I love this cast, and I especially love Wada Takuma, and you can hear his voice faltering and just crying and just BABY DON’T CRY

8. Favorite Dream Live?

Dream Live 7th, hands down. It’s the Dream Live that got me hooked. They have adlibs, my beloved Rikkai and Massu, my favorite Echizen, Shirotan, and even 1st cast.

9. A song you feel indifferent towards and a song you hate. Why did you choose these songs?

Idk its title, I just really don’t like the Burning song with Kabaji yelling “BAU!”

10. Favorite Rikkai cast and cast member. Why did you choose the ones you did?

Why do you do this THIS IS SO HARD. I wish I could include 3rd Rikkai here already because I heard they’re amazing, but the DVD isn’t out yet.

11. Do you actually stalk any TeniMyu actors (e.g. their twitters, blogs)?

Mostly just 3rd Rikkai’s Tateishi Toshiki for pictures of his dates with Shogo, Shogo for his cute selfies, and Takuma Isawa, my love, because he’s just so damn handsome and he tweets in Chinese (which I can’t speak but it’s still adorable <3

12. What’s your opinion on the Rokkaku and Higa casts? Do you have a favorite moment or actor in them?

I can’t remember them much because it’s been years since I last watched 1st and 2nd season and they didn’t really leave much of an impression except for 2nd Saeki and Luke C.

It’s actually amazing because I hated Kite in the anime/manga, but Luke C. makes him impossible to hate.

2nd Saeki had a pretty voice and a pretty face. I can remember watching this Shounen boyband thing that he was in back then just for him.

13. Who plays the best Tezuka? The best Shiraishi? The best Ryoma? The best Fuji?

ZAIKI TAKUMA THE BEST.

He’s the Tezuka actor who looks the part the most, acts like Tezuka in the sense that he seems rather strict, and honestly, when he sings, he looks like how I’d imagine Tezuka would look like while singing. His movements are graceful and perfect, he always stays in character and keeps a straight face, and when he finally does smile, it’s just so beautiful I could melt. He’s a Tezuka to the core.

Sasaki Yoshihide is super graceful as Shiraishi and crazy fun backstage. Love him.

I only like Echizen (only in Tenimyu) thanks to his actors but most especially because of Takahashi Ryuuki’s performance in Final Match Rikkai 2nd

Furukawa Yuuta is probably my favorite Fuji. He has an amazing voice and beautiful dancing skills.

14. Favorite song and actor from any St. Rudolph cast.

28. are you out? if so how did you come outOkay so I come out in the most ridiculous ways. I come out with puns. I joke about my sexuality a lot. Most of the times I actually don’t realize I’m outing myself because I assume people already know. Family friends who’ve known me since I was a baby have literally ALL said that they had always known, so that’s why I assume everyone knows I’m gay from day 1.

But coming out for the first time? FUCKING TRAIN WRECK. I was so fucking nervous. My dad was the first one I told and I almost couldn’t, but I don’t know why? He’s gay himself. My mom was even worse. She’s been hurt by my dad, of course, so her view on the whole gay community was whack. On top of that, she always had boyfriends who were anti-gay so I came out to her via facebook lmao. Couldn’t even tell it face to face. And she was so proud? Like, her whole view on gays kinda just switched, which isn’t entirely good but she’s learning and she’s so much more open now. My mom eventually told my grandparents because I was scared out of my mind, but two years later they took me in and a year later they also took in my girlfriend.

My friends were all super chill ofc. Most of them also went like “I fucking knew it ya big ol’ tomboy lol”.

29. what is the most uncomfortable / strange coming out experience you have So, about half a year after I came out as a lesbian, I also kind of discovered I don’t feel much, if any, sexual attraction. Most of the people I tell this are actually super chill about it and ask questions (which I’m fine with, because they’re also learning). But when I told my grandfather, he said “You’re young. You don’t know what you want”. And that fucking hurt. That literally struck me right in my core. I’ve always been a grandfather kid, I’ve always looked up to him, and then he goes and says that shit.

He eventually learned too. “You’re never too old to learn” was one of the first sayings he’s taught me. I forgave him, and he accepted me. On a lighter note: the day after, I came home from school and my grandmother comes up to me to tell me all about asexuality. She said she’d looked it up and read all about it. I’m assuming my grandfather picked up on this too and that’s why he’s accepted it. I love my grandparents so much.

30. what is a piece of advice for people who may not be in a safe place to express their sexualityI honestly have no idea. I have no experience with that, because I came out as soon as I accepted myself (that took a long while, but hey). Make sure you surround yourself with people you CAN be yourself around. I know that’s probably shitty advice because you can’t just leave your folks behind or something, but it’s nice to have a few people who feel the same way. Someone you can talk to.

If You Want Maximum Results In Minimum Time, You're Going To Have To Work Out (And Workout Hard, At That)

The simple strategies I've outlined so far (diet and some walking) will help make a significant change in your body weight, and you can definitely lose 10-20 pounds in the first month alone depending on your body size.

Add in structured workouts to this (like the workouts listed in the "6 Weeks to Lean" guide), and you lose even more weight and look even more amazing.

You see, besides having adequate protein intake on a diet, the only equally important (or even, more important) factor for body composition is the amount of training.

And just about all of us want optimal body composition.

We want to strip off fat, and leave a lean, toned physique in its place.

We want to a chiseled body that turns heads even with a shirt on.

We want to be bursting with confidence, happiness, and even an "odd" sense of power, knowing that we've transformed our body in a manner that 95% of the population is unable to do.

And to do this fast, we have to introduce a stimulus that demolished pesky fat, while forcing our muscles to grow strong and lean.

The hands-down, best way to do this is to resistance train for 45 minutes or so, 3x per week, with a mix of weights and bodyweight.

We want to be intense in these workouts, so our body gets that "kick in the pants" to get that burn off fat and build muscle.

And when this is combined with a steady diet, daily herbs, and toxin reduction, you will notice a never-before-seen level of fat loss and body re-composition.

I recommend anyone new to working out starts with bodyweight circuits for the 1st month, a mix of bodyweight and free weights (dumbbells, barbells, kettle-bells) for the 2nd month, and all free weights for the 3rd month.

(All workouts are provided in the accompanying workout guide).

This will help build lean, toned muscle and strength (and to maintain bone density), while letting the body acclimate to the training load (and thereby avoiding injuries).

Moving on after Month 3, I find that an upper/lower body split is best. This sort of "split" basically means we will do all upper body work one day, and lower body work another day. At this point in our progress, we'll be used to training and we can safely step it up to 4x per week of workouts, on a reduced-calorie diet, without compromising recovery.

For maximum results, do NOT do most of the "magazine workouts" you see in the store or online. These are very-advanced 5-day body-part split routines, in which you do 20 sets a day for your chest or back or quads, etc. They are very often written by steroid-using bodybuilders and it's simply stupid for anyone who's not on drugs to try these workouts and expect to not over-train. Also, these workouts are very often based on isolation exercises, which use only 1 primary muscle/joint.

On the other hand, when we use compound movements, we use several muscle groups at once and use 2 or more joints. In doing so, we have a much higher calorie burn, which means shorter workouts, lower insulin resistance, and quicker and easier fat loss.

The best compound movements for maximum fat loss in minimum time are squats, lunges, chin-ups/ pull-ups, dead-lifts, rows, shoulder/military presses, and chest presses.

The only caveat here is some of these exercises take some dedicated practice to do correctly.

Most people doing these in the gym (seriously about 90% or so) do them incorrectly and can get injured as a result. This is why the warm-ups I've written out for you in the workout guide are crucial to make sure your muscle and central nervous system are ready for the oncoming load, and that they won't fail or get injured under pressure.

Before we continue, I have an important note for women:

I promise, you will not get super bulky and "huge" lifting weights.

You can only get "huge" by eating at a daily calorie surplus, lifting consistently for years, and often using steroids or performance-enhancing drugs (like many pro bodybuilders and even cover models do). But since you'll be in a calorie deficit, weights will actually make the difference by maintaining chiseled muscle, stripping off fat fast, enhancing your curves, and revealing a sexy, trim physique.

Now back to our scheduled programming.

Fast fat loss comes... by staying mostly within 6-12 repetitions per set of weight workouts. This is where you will have optimal muscle hypertrophy (growth) while also stimulating fat loss. By doing these via "circuit training" as outlined in the workout guide, you'll put an extra level of fat-burning stimulus on the body (and you will see crazy results.)

As for other rep ranges

The 3-6 rep range is OK occasionally, but it is more on the power/strength training side. This is good for reverse pyramid training, and other techniques, but is not required.

Above 12 reps does not automatically get you "cut" or "lean". That is B.S. magazine advice that simply does not give your muscle enough stimuli to grow strong and stay lean. And if the stimulus on your muscles isn't great enough on a diet, where do you think the body will go first for energy?

- The only time high reps are OK is during a temporary month or so when you're looking for an added "pump". This pump can definitely be helpful for muscle growth, assuming that the months surrounding this high-rep phase has workouts done under 12 reps.

In the 6 Weeks to Lean Guide, the optional month-by-month program has Month 3, 6, and 9 as high-rep, pump months. All surrounding months, though, are in lower ranges.

- Otherwise, if you go above 12 reps month after month after month...

You will steadily be using lower weights to accommodate high reps.

Very low weights mean low "load" on the muscles.

Low load means the body realizes the muscles aren't being used a lot, and see no reason to hold onto them (especially when the body is already low on energy due to a reduced-calorie diet)

If you'd like, keep up cardio as a replacement for some weight days, but not all (so you maintain lean muscle).

When I do cardio, I'll either do it on off days for 20-30 minutes or do it for 15-20 minutes after a weight training workout. I also recommend walking 20-30 minutes a day, on off-days.

DO NOT DO THIS: Cardio at moderate to high intensity for more than 45-60 minutes. This is one of the main causes of cortisol output (the "stress hormone"). This catabolic hormone, as we've discussed in previous chapters, is disastrous to our muscle and actually can cause fat to be stored, particularly around the midsection.
